For some unfathomable reason, Link liked this champion. Enough to be hurt by his actions and carry that pain with him for days on end. “What would you have me do? I think there's an argument to be made that Will and Hannibal have directly opposing concepts of love. Especially in season 1, Will treats romantic love as something that would make him sane, help him regain control over his life, sort of anchor him if you will. That's why he kisses Alana in Fromage. And it's because of the same reasons that he's being denied his desire for romantic love here; Alana rejects him because he's not mentally stable. In a way, he's being told here that love not only "heals" you but that it's something for the sane – and not for the "troubled" like him. This is also why Will later keeps his current "happy" marriage separate from his complicated past with Hannibal. Because love is not supposed to get messy.

But to Hannibal, love is messy. The only time he's loved someone before caused him nothing but pain. Mischa's death traumatized him. And the love he had for her and all the pain that came of it changed him forever. To him, love does not heal, it destroys. Where Will perceives love as change for the better, Hannibal can only see it as change for the worse. Because it's the one thing with the ability to hurt him (or to "influence" him as they put it in Secondo) – love is an uncontrollable force, it's inherently messy.

And if you interpret their concepts of love like that, it's interesting that they both deny themselves love but for different reasons; Hannibal fears love because he is scared of getting hurt again and Will (for a long time at least) does not allow himself to experience love because he's convinced it's not for him.

I just think it’s so god damn insane.

Absolutely batshit crazy.

The whole scene where Will is seen in Hannibal’s house in season 2, knees up to his chest, sitting on the same floor where he had nearly lost his life…

First of all, let’s think about this…

So, we first have to realize that Hannibal’s house was boarded up. Locked, and everything inside covered with plastic.

Will had to make the decision to get in his car and drive the 2 or so hours to Maryland, then decide to break into the house, THEN proceed to sit in the same spot he nearly died.

I can’t imagine what he feeling when he stepped into that house after months of not doing so, especially since the last time he did so, he was betrayed by the man he loved.

The blood on the floor was cleared, but the ground was still tainted. The entire house, even, was filled with memories.

He came there for answers to questions he didn’t know if he even wanted answered. What did he feel about Hannibal? Especially after what happened? Did he forgive him? All the questions were already answered. Will knew that, deep down, but still wouldn’t let himself admit it was true.

Even so, he stayed there, pondering, searching for another answer.

Now, when Alana comes in, it’s an interesting interaction…

She is there to search for answers herself…to the same questions Will had. Except, her answers were different.

She didn’t seem surprised to see Will there already as she walked in, but why should she? They both went through the same thing, after all.

Although, Alana, she was was the one on the other side of the veil. Even though they had both gotten betrayed by Hannibal, the meanings behind each were vastly different.

Alana was disposable. A plot point in Hannibal’s story. Whereas Will was was something that Hannibal would give up absolutely everything for. Hurting Will hurt Hannibal just as much.

Watching Manner of Death has confirmed for me that my absolute favourite sub-genre (is it even a sub-genre? category) of BL is Queer Adult Stories.

Don't get me wrong, I loved My School President as much as the next person, Bad Buddy has my whole heart, and I would genuinely fight someone over Eighth Sense, Semantic Error, or ITSAY but...

Maybe it's because I left high school behind a long time ago and my uni years were a bit rubbish, maybe it's because a lot of mainstream queer rep still feels very young and I'm well over first loves at this point, maybe because it feels like it's showing me a future I could have one day, but something about seeing two adults in their late 20s, 30s, 40s fall in love all while dealing with work, family, life in a way I can fully relate to.... It just hits different. It makes me happy.

Moonlight Chicken, Laws of Attraction, Manner of Death, I want more shows like this, I need more shows like this.
