JOEL CAUCHI
BONDI JUNCTION WESTFIELD ATTACK
Joel Cauchi
13 April 2024
Six people (5 women and 1 man) have been murdered in a mass killing in Bondi Junction Westfield on Saturday, when at 3pm, Queensland man Joel Cauchi walked into the shopping centre wearing a green and yellow sport jersey and then left. He returned 10 minutes later and then started stabbing and killing people, mainly targeting women. There are twelve people in hospital suffering serious injuries.
Ashlee Good was stabbed to death by Cauchi, who also stabbed her 9-month year old baby daughter who had to get emergency surgery. Australian millionaire John Singleton’s daughter, Dawn, 25, was also a victim; and there were also two victims who from overseas.
There were many heros yesterday, including a man from Russia who tried to prevent the attacker from killing more people by fighting him off with a bollard. There were men who ran after the perpetrator, one of the them carrying a chair. One man walking behind a woman with her children (possibly his partner and children) realised the danger they were in and turned around and attempted blocking the way to protect the three. Instead of running towards the man, Cauchi dodged him and ran into a different direction.
The NSW police officer, Amy Scott, who was the only police officer on site at the time who ran towards Cauchi and shot and killed him and saved more lives in doing so.
The perpetrator was known to police and had mental health issues. It was said that he had no police record but there are rumours online that he had been previously arrested for DV and assault - however, this is all heresay.
There was a woman, 36, who was stabbed on Bondi Beach on Friday, 12 April - the day before the Westfield stabbings. The perpetrator of that attack hasn’t been arrested and was still under investigation when the Westfield stabbing took place. Some believe that the Bondi Beach stabbing may have been linked to Cauchi or perhaps it was just a coincidence?
Some commenters believe he was a drug addict, we don’t know if that is true or not. One man who knew him up in QLD told the media that Cauchi owned knives which he named his ‘everyday knives’. On his Facebook account he described himself as ‘single’. He was known to go to nudist beaches, strip clubs as well as listing himself on an escort website in Sydney in June last year.
Criminal psychologist Dr Watson-Munro stated that Cauchi ‘knew what he was doing’ and that he was ‘bad not mad’ and ‘there’s clearly planning attached to this’. He stated, “But here was somebody who was on a mission, he knew what he wanted to do and he did it with deadly affect.”
He came down from QLD to Sydney only a month ago, rented a small storage facility and went to Bondi to learn how to surf. He went surfing at Bondi 6-days ago. In 2010, he was an online English tutor. There is still a lot of information we don’t know as yet as the investigation continues.

If you don’t mind writing angst or sad right now, how about a snippet from when Holly loses the rest of her Rotwell team. :))
Holly Louise Munro is sixteen years old and doesn't think she's going to make it to seventeen. Plenty of psychic agents don't, after all. And this window isn't a very good reassurance.
The night started ordinarily enough. The case was somewhat routine, disturbances and disruptions that her team was sent to investigate and mitigate. Most poltergeists don't make a habit of violently hurling knives the instant the sun goes down, though. Most wait, most build up to full attacks, most don't do this-
Holly has to remind herself to breathe, but not too loudly. It's only barely one in the morning, still comparatively early in a usual worknight. If she breathes too loudly, or moves too much, or panics, the Visitor will hear her, or sense her, or notice her, and she can't have that. She has to file a report, it's only proper procedure, she has to- She has to tell their families.
Arthur was the first to be killed. Holly was in the kitchen prepping tea, quickly and clipped and just the way she always does, while the other three made their rounds, set up chains, laid iron filings. Arthur, a supervisor around her height with a face full of freckles, stopped into the kitchen to check in with her. Holly's head was ducked, not looking his direction even though she heard him coming with his cheerful, "Oy, Munro-". The instant he poked his head of tousled ginger hair around the entrance to the kitchen, a knife flew through the air and stabbed into his neck, all but pinning him to the wall of the hallway behind him.
Holly's head had whipped up at the grisly thunk, in just enough time to see the light go out of his eyes. Her mind was utterly blank for far too long, and it was the first time she had to remind herself to breathe that night. The blank look in Arthur's eyes, the knife protruding from his windpipe and the thin trickles of blood falling down around it, are seared into her memory. She'll never forget that.
Selfishly, she'll hate herself for it later and has already kind of started, her first thought is it's in here with me. It's fuzzy and slow, the realization, but it sticks in her head anyway. She puts a hand on her rapier, tries to remember where she'd seen the knife block sitting on the counter before the sun set, and thanks God above for the gift of shock.
Poltergeists are drawn to strong emotion. If she were feeling anything in particular at the moment, she would easily become the next victim. She'd never seen a Visitor become so violent so quickly before coming to Cotton Street. There isn't an iron circle in the kitchen. They hadn't thought there was enough space or need.
"Brenton," Holly calls as loudly as she dares, "Christa," and the other two members of her team hadn't responded. Brenton refused to go by his first name, and Christa was barely fourteen years old. Arthur had loved caramelized biscuits. He'd probably been coming to beg some from her when he was killed.
For the longest time, Holly stood stock still in the cramped kitchen of a home on Cotton Street with the body of one her supervisor, who loved caramelized biscuits and earl grey tea and had too-long ginger hair that stuck up every which way and freckles almost as dark as Holly's own skin, and all she could think of was lists of details of these children she works with. Children who likely won't see another birthday. Children sent to die in a home on Cotton Street.
All she could think was that Christa's favorite color is green and she'd had strawberry cake from a storebought boxed mix that she'd made herself for her birthday last week even though Holly had offered to bake something, and that she'd worn non-regulation platform boots to make herself look taller, and her wispy blonde hair fell in front of her eyes like mare's-tail clouds. All Holly could think is that it took her six months to find out Brenton's first name, Augustin, and that he'd been named for a Saint who preached unity even though the boy himself picked more fights on sillier grounds than anyone Holly had ever met, even all her aunts and uncles at family reunions when she was very little, and that she brought chamomile tea along even though it wasn't a standard because she knew he had anxiety and it helped to calm his nerves. And that these were the children Holly now had responsibility for, as the oldest of them, and who she can't save from this.
"Christa," she tries again. "Brenton!" Her voice is getting more shrill, she knows it, can feel it trembling in her jawbone. All of a sudden she wants to cry. She's only sixteen. She's more of an adult than any of them, but she's not, not really. She just has to be. She has to be the adult, because that's what would keep them alive. They needed her. "I need you!"
"Alright, Holly?" Came one high, airy little voice, and if Holly hadn't choked out the tiniest little sob as she dares to step out into the hallway, closer to Arthur's body but father from the knife block which she remembers now is sitting under the tiny square window with curtains she had thought earlier were pretty, with embroidered daisies and dandelions, she's a liar.
"Christa, come here right now," Holly says. "Rapier out." A rapier won't do much good against a Visitor with no corporeal form, but she isn't going to tell the other girl that. The key right then was to stay calm, to hold themselves together to hopefully keep them alive. "Was Brenton with you?" She asks, stepping out to meet Christa and keep her from seeing Arthur with a knife in his neck. They see so much in this job, but she can try to protect the littler girl from this much.
Christa shakes her head. "He was in the bedroom."
Holly nods, shouts Brenton's name again, and stiffens when she hears rattling from behind them. She doesn't dare turn around to look back toward the kitchen, but she would have and did bet her life that the knives were moving, slipping from their slots and drawers and Arthur's throat. She takes Christa by the shoulders, bends to look her in the eye because even platform boots can't make a little girl big all at once.
"Go find him and get into your chain circle. That's what he was doing, right?" When Christa nods, Holly continues. "Go tell him I said to get in the chains, right now. stay there until I say so." For the first time, fear shows in Christa's eyes. For the first time, she looks back over Holly's shoulder. She gasps and goes even paler than usual and starts to tremble in Holly's hands. "Don't look," Holly says. "Go. I'll be right behind you."
"Do you promise?" Christa asks. And Holly, trying to be the adult, trying to remind herself to breathe, nods once and firmly.
"I promise." She pushes Christa toward the bedroom, toward hopefully safety. The girl doesn't look back. She was always whip-smart, Holly can tell her parents that, always did the inventory twice as well as anyone and enjoyed the mathematics and memorized the regulations, knew what to do if she had to go off-book, too.
She was so, so bright and had mare's-tail hair and she had trusted Holly so completely that when she picked up her pace and started running on her size four platform combat boots, Holly truly thought she'd be safe in the chain circle with Brenton in only a few seconds. She hoped it, believed it so much that she turned away to return, steeling herself metaphorically and literally, to the kitchen where her bag was.
She had flares, salt bombs, precious senses of safety in there. Quickly, clipped, she collected her things, strapped extras onto her body, stared at the knives hovering just above their places in the knife block. It wasn't attacking her right now. It couldn't, of course, because it's focus was on the tiny girl down the hall. The thud sent chills through Holly, the sudden ice cold that comes with being pierced through with abject terror.
Dropping her bag, she'd run toward the sound, and come to a desperate halt when she saw the knife, the same one that had sliced through Arthur's windpipe, embedded between Christa's shoulderblades. It must have severed her spine in just the right place, because she's dead by the time Holly tries to find her pulse. She thinks, and will continue to think, that it's a mercy. Still, tears come to her eyes and she's forced to blink them away, keep breathing, keep breathing, when Brenton appears, sweaty and shocked.
"Munro?" He says weakly. She shakes her head.
"Go," she hisses, and hears metal rattling ominously. "Get in the circle," she cries, standing to her feet and running to push him ahead of her. "It's a Poltergeist," she explains hastily, shoving him roughly into the bedroom where a wide circle of chain sits in the clear space between the bed beside the door and the window at the far wall of the room. "Get in-"
She flinches, drops her grip on Brenton's arm and covers her head in fear when something shiny flashes in the corner of her eye. She doesn't know what it is, but this Visitor's hallmark is metal things, harmless metals like copper and composites free of iron or silver, cheap faux silverware and bargain jewelry.
It's an ornamental gold pocketknife and a hatpin this time, that do sweet terrified Brenton in. The knife is just large enough that she can see it sticking out of his stomach, the hatpin embedded in between two of his ribs, probably puncturing a lung. She whimpers a small, useless "No!" as Brenton crumples to the floor just outside the chain. She blinks hard and fights back tears once more, struggles to breathe even shallow shaky breaths, and clings to the small sweaty hand he holds out.
"The circle," Brenton wheezes, moving his arm like he's trying to push her into it. Almost robotically, she crawls across the chain, into the protective circle, but never let's go of Brenton as she does.
"It's going to be okay," she whispers uselessly, "You're going to be fine."
Brenton stared at her, hopefully in too much shock to feel the pain as he had bled slowly out against a chest of drawers. His eyes were wide and green and every part of him was trembling. His breaths were strained and labored and Holly knew, the whole time, that she was lying to him. He was dying right in front of her. Her whole team was dead or dying. They were just children.
Brenton fumbled with her hand, his palm slipping. Something thunked into a wall outside in the hall. "I'm scared, Hol, I'm so scared, please, Holly-"
"I've got you," she told him, "It's alright, August, I'm here, I'll-" She couldn't say protect you. She's already failed at that. "It's alright. I've got you." She says it over and over, until internal bleeding or a collapsed lung takes the light from his eyes. She keeps saying it even after he's dead as if that can bring him back or make it true.
She keeps saying it for so long that she doesn't realize at first how loud the rattling throughout the house is. Drawers are shaking, items that aren't shiny or sharp now threatening at every angle. There is a trail of Holly's dead teammates leading to this room, and there's next to no good way to fight a Poltergeist this strong. Holly is completely alone except for a thing that wants to kill her and will probably succeed, and she has to remind herself to keep breathing.
The window is her only chance. It's a second floor, but she can probably survive that. The odds are better than staying here through the night, rapier useless and team dead around her. She thinks she's going to be sick. She thinks there's almost no point. If the fall doesn't kill her she'll still be alone til morning.
She gives up on the chains and finds herself pressed against the wall beneath the window, shaking. A drawer flies open in the bedside table and a desperate sob rips out of her. She can't time it properly, can't see the Visitor's approach as it comes to take her life. She forces herself to breathe once, twice, and then turns, scrabbles at the window latch and throws it open. It screeches with disuse, takes all her shaky strength to pry it open and lift it wide enough to get out, and she almost falls headfirst when she manages it.
The noise in the house builds to a fever pitch as Holly rolls out of the window, finds herself on a tile roof, and keeps sliding. The impact when she hits brick, a chimney, will leave her with bruises and a single broken rib. She can still hear the rattling and pounding inside the Cotton Street flat, can see all three of her teammates lying dead inside. For the first time since the sun went down, she doesn't have to force herself to breathe.
When they find her in the morning, the flat's owner and DEPRAC and a Rotwell department head, still lying against the chimney barely aware of the world around her, she's cried herself out. She's dehydrated and exhausted, but there's no more rattling inside the house. She'd cried for hours, rattling sobs wrenching out of her, in the dark against that chimney. It was loud and ragged and she doesn't know how none of the neighbors heard her. She cried so hard her head hurt and she couldn't even speak to explain what happened to her for nearly a full day.
The scene inside the flat had spoken for itself, though. Holly was the sole survivor, of course. And she got to see her seventeenth birthday, not that it mattered much. She was taken off of active duty, assigned a desk and inventory and peperwork that she did twice as well as anyone else in honor of Christa Wells, who didn't live to see fifteen. She drinks chamomile tea when her hands shake because she remembers how scared Augustin Brenton was when he died, and she keeps a pack of caramelized biscuits in a well-oiled drawer in her desk because she sometimes still expects Arthur O'Connor to come by and ask if she has any.
She is very good at her job, no matter how angry she finds herself at the adults, real adults, who so fail the children in their care and instead leave the children to each other. Even in that, she finds herself numb more often than not and wonders if this is what it's like for Visitors. She doesn't know why she survived and they didn't. She doesn't know why she's alive, or how to be.
Holly has to remind herself to breathe sometimes.

RELAX :  for both muses to share a hot tub or hot spring. ( paxroe ) @gcmechanger
Tumblr media
he can’t relax. he’s tried and he feels as if he’s lost even MORE sleep trying to find a solution to his anxieties. he’s stir crazy. even though the baby monitor is silent on the receiving side, he listens for a pin drop. the babies are stealthy, and dangerous when least expected. he’s imagining disaster in that hot tub– a fire’s been started, the twins have used each other as ladders to climb out of their shared crib, they’ve found a set of knives and are playing catch with them. he shudders, causing ripples in the warm waters. “I should just go check on them, just in case...” he knows munroe’s patience was thinning by the second. it had been some time since they’d enjoyed each other’s company without distractions.

Movie Review | Don't Open Till Christmas (Purdom, 1984)
Tumblr media
This is directed by Edmund Purdom, star of such unimpeachable classics as Pieces and Absurd, the former of which shares with this the distinction of being a Dick Randall production. Apparently this was a troubled production, with Purdom leaving the film at one point, but as he later returned to finish it, I will assume the finished film reflected enough of his vision. I will not claim that Purdom is one of the great actor-turned-directors, or even a particularly good one, but from the results it seems that he understands the assignment, in that he delivers a slasher where the slashing happens at regular intervals and in graphic enough detail.
The gimmick here is that the victims are all dressed as Santa Claus, leading me to believe this is what the dumbest people you know mean when they froth at the mouth about the supposed War on Christmas. So it isn't just anybody getting killed, but Santa Clauses being killed by the dozens. One Santa Claus after another getting stabbed with knives, sliced with meat cleavers, fatally poked and prodded and what have you. One Santa Claus has a particularly unpleasant death in a bathroom, when a killer uses a straight razor to slice off his "yuletide log". This is one moment where Purdom exercises some restraint, as you do not see the "yuletide log" onscreen. You do not even hear Santa scream "Ow, my wang!" in agony as he fumbles with his bloodied "yuletide log" in his hands, scrambling to get to the hospital in time so they can re-attach it through the wonders of medical science. These things do not happen in the finished film.
I'm not gonna reveal the killer's motivations, although if like me you don't celebrate and find some of the commercialized Christmas cheer stuffed down our throats performative and obnoxious, you might sympathize with his actions. But you shouldn't, because need I remind you that murder is WRONG. Also, on top of killing countless Santa Clauses, he kidnaps a sex worker and lectures her about her line of work. Stick to killing Santa Clauses and leave your moralizing at home, pal.
Anyway, this isn't really a good movie, but it does deliver the goods like I said, and the footage of '80s London is pretty neat. I guess you could say that living under Thatcher was like seeing Santa Claus stabbed countless times, if you wanted to get political. There's also a fun musical number with Caroline Munro, who has sparkly hair on top of a sparkly outfit and demonstrates her talents as a scream queen. Also, there's a blind woman who I swear was played by Paula Meadows, although she does not appear to be credited. Maybe it was someone who looked similar, but I'd like to pretend it was her. Sadly she does not wear a bow tie like she did in Good Girls, Bad Girls.

Film Narrative 2 - Pre Production
Idea for script
We as a group, at the time with both Euan Bird and Isla Munro (who both dropped out), were in agreement about making a murder mystery style. What was still up in the air was the tone and the exact story.
We were beginning to settle on a story with a serious tone that would discuss class. It would concern some working class workers in a mansion, who, in the absence of an abundance of wealth, were struggling to defend themselves legally in the wake of a murder the mansion they worked at.
However upon a discussion with a lecturer we realised that creating such a serious movie, especially in the time we had, would be very difficult to achieve.
So instead, we decided to take inspiration from a more light-hearted murder mystery, ‘Knives Out’. The story would be very similar, however it would now be comedic, and follow two workers in a romantic relationship who accidentally kill their boss and must figure out how to deal with the situation. Both of them are in love and don’t want the other to go to prison.
Tumblr media
Roles
Director - Joseph Olanlokun
Writer - Kyle Craig
DOP - Initially Isla Munro, after she dropped out this was taken over by Ariel Homossany
Producer/Editor/Sound Designer - Euan Adams
Boom Operator - Euan Bird
Location
We as a group searched around Craiglockart. We had a few different ideas in a few different places, however, upon our discovery of the Siegfried suite we knew we had found the correct place as it perfectly resembled a stately home.

Writing the Script
For research of writing the script, I watched a few murder mystery/detective movies. I watched the aforementioned Knives Out, as well as Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock movies. This advised me on writing plot points, and Knives out really helped me with structuring the interview scene and sorting out the pacing.
The movie had to be three minutes in length, however I was overly ambitious. I was very stubborn in the amount of content I wanted to be present, and I thought that if the dialogue was handled in a fast-paced manner, then I would easily be able to go over three pages. This led to issues of the film’s length in the future.
I knew the beginning and I knew the end, however I struggled to fill in a lot of the content in between, especially concerning how to convey the relationship between John and Liz. After a few emails back-and-forth with Joseph (who originally came up with the idea) I managed to figure it out and I wrote the first and then second draft.
Note: Originally the film was to be called pecan pie, however Joseph thought that cherry pie sounded better so we changed it on the day of the shoot.

JOEL CAUCHI
JOEL CAUCHI
Queensland murderer Joel Cauchi, 40, killed five women and one man on Saturday, 13 April 2024. He pre-planned the killing and knew what he was doing. He was targeting women and was filmed dodging men. Before the day he killed his victims, he was working out what was the best shopping centre to target his victims in, he settled on Bondi Junction Westfield.
We now know the six victims involved and there are still seriously injured victims in hospital.
It is confirmed the reason why Joel Cauchi targeted women, his father said it was because he ‘wanted a girlfriend’ and was frustrated. Cauchi, was a single male, mentally ill and was known to go to nudist beaches, strip clubs, and listed himself on an escort website in Sydney. He was interested in weapons, knives and tried to join a gun group before the massacre. The police were aware of his mental illness and his interest in weapons.
Cauchi was an entitled male who most probably believed that because he wanted a woman, HE should have a girlfriend. Because he didn’t have a girlfriend, he lashed out and killed women and harmed and killed any male (including a security guard) who got in his way. He even attempted to kill a 9-month-old baby girl, who is still in hospital in stable condition (one of the victims is the babys mother). This is a man that didn’t respect women as people.
A woman, aged 36, was stabbed on Bondi Beach on Friday, 12 April, the day before the Westfield killings. The perpetrator of that attack hasn’t been arrested or identified. Was this incident linked to Cauchi? Or is it just a coincidence?
Criminal psychologist Dr Watson-Munro stated that Cauchi ‘knew what he was doing’ and that “… here was somebody who was on a mission, he knew what he wanted to do and he did it with deadly affect.”

ororo/yukio | t | ao3
Day 5: Sharp
warnings: blood, injury
Yukio’s breath caught in her throat as she slid to the ground, her back up against the alley wall. She’d managed to get this far on adrenaline, but her concentration was starting to slip.
She lifted up her arm to examine the wound in her side. It wasn’t deep but it was long, the knife having glanced off of her hipbone and skidded up over her ribs. She wasn’t about to bleed out, but damn if that whole half of her torso didn’t feel like it was on fire.
In danger of dying or not, though, she still had to get it wrapped. Her shirt was stuck to the wound, gummed up in drying blood, and she was trying to figure out if she could get it off in good enough condition to tear it into makeshift bandages when a gentle gust of wind curled around her from absolutely nowhere.
“Yukio!”
“Hey, Ro,” Yukio said. “No worries, still breathing.”
Ororo knelt down next to her where she’d literally dropped out of the sky. “How bad is it?” she asked, one of her hands absentmindedly stroking Yukio’s hair as she examined the wound herself.
“Not bad,” Yukio said. “You could probably kiss it better.”
Ororo rolled her eyes, but she was smiling all the same. “Maybe later,” she said. “For now-” and she pulled off her cape.
“I’m gonna hold you to that promise,” Yukio said. “Although your silhouette isn’t as impressive without the cape.”
“I’m sure I’ll manage,” Ororo said. Yukio watched her tear strips of fabric from her cape, noting the strange way it tore and making a mental note to ask Ororo later how she could get her hands on some unstable molecules. Seemed useful.
Ororo’s hands were firm as she bandaged Yukio’s side but they gentled once she was wrapped up, her fingers making sure the wound was covered with a light pressure that made Yukio shiver and laugh.
“There,” Ororo said. “That will hold until we get you somewhere safer.”
“Going to sweep me away in your arms?” Yukio teased.
“Yes,” Ororo said, and after some painful jostling they were rising up, up, up, and Yukio was never going to get used to the sensation of flying. Falling was fun in its own way, but flying was something else entirely.
“Time to make good on your promise,” Yukio said once they were at cruising altitude, reaching up with her good hand to touch Ororo’s cheek. She could feel Ororo’s smile against her own lips, and really, if this was the end result, maybe she could stand to get stabbed a little more often.

Reading list guidelines
Hi! This is Annie, here are my reblog guidelines during 2023:
You MUST to TAG ME in your fic, I know some people discontinued their tag list, unfortunately Dumblr doesn’t notify me and I don’t have enough time to check blog by blog because I follow lots of people.
TAG all the WARNINGS, there’s some topics I’m not comfortable with. Please respect my boundaries and triggers as I respect yours.
Must be posted on Tumblr. I wanna support writers on here, so please, no links to another fanfic platform.
Every Friday a weekly list will be published (unless something happens in my life), so lists will have between 7-42 fics.
Use ‘read more’ if word counts is over 500, please; sometimes I keep fics in my drafts.
Would be amazing if you following, I swear I’m not a bad person, just a grumpy one.
Could take between 1 to 2 months I reblog your work, sometimes I’m slow because of school or personal stuff, also I always plan my queue at least for a month.
If I like your fic, it means I receive the notification and would be on my queue, but if I don’t like it, you can message me and send me the link, ‘cause probably I didn’t receive the notification. Also, if you notice my likes it means I’m putting your work on my queue with the comment.
If you wanna tag me but not be highlighted, you can send me a message and ask it politely.
I just wanna support people, and hope people support me too, so I just do this for fun, I’m no gonna tolerate hate or something negative, so if you send me something like that, I will block you without hesitation; this also applies if someone is rude with me.
I’m okay with dark, smut, fluff, angst, horror, etc., just please, tag properly.

The Stone’s Toll - Chapter Six
Tumblr media
Read on AO3
Before Claire could journey up to Inverness, she had to settle some matters first in London. The first thing she did was walk up the grand steps of her parents’ bank and walk through the marble columns of the main entrance. A little over two-thirds was left in her account, and she withdrew it all. She walked out, two hundred pounds heavier. The pound notes were neatly stacked into piles of twenty in her suitcase. It was all that remained of her inheritance which had been pretty substantial; the rest had been spent on various celebrations in her life and her travels with her uncle. In total, her trip up to Inverness would be very comfortable, and she would have some to spare for a mockup dress, with guidance of course as Mrs. Graham had assured her.
The first thing she did was purchase a train ticket at King’s Cross Station to Edinburgh for the next day. She was almost giddy when she felt the smooth surface of the ticket and her receipt shoved into her hands.
The pawn shops in London had infinitely more variety than Inverness, she was certain. There was practically one on every corner in London, but only one she could remember in the general area of Inverness. She couldn’t very well bring a banknote with her into the past. But she could find something to trade. No matter what century, gold, silver, and jewellery always held value.
She glanced through the miscellaneous items dotted throughout the store and finally assumed a stance before the jewellery counter. Dainty rings laid within velvet boxes and chains strung across the shelves enclosed in glass carefully haphazard. Her eyes paused on an emerald. Jamie’s birthstone. Next to it was a ruby, much like the ring meant for her baby, set into a gold necklace. She pointed at the different necklaces, bracelets, and rings for the attendant to put aside for her. With one final point, she was ready at the register with her money. At the last minute, she spied a stack of pictures and postcards depicting the world’s modern marvels. An airplane, skyscrapers, tug boats, telephones, even the atom bomb were included in the stack. She added it to her items and smiled up at the cashier. She left, with little less than half of what she had withdrawn that day from her purchases at the train station and the pawnshop. She could always purchase more in Inverness.
Claire hurried over to her next stop; the sun would be sinking soon. Her body stopped before the small metal door. A locker in the storage facility. It contained mementos from her childhood. Pictures of her parents and notes from the various friends she had made across the world with her uncle. It was the only tangible thing that anchored her to one spot. While she constantly left for new places, it had been reassuring to know that the locker would always be there for her to remember. She shuffled through the items and pulled out some of her baby pictures where she screamed with cake smeared over her face, her parents’ smiles shining brightly behind her. One with her mouth covered in ice cream on a pier at Brighton with her parents, months before the accident. The rest were her dirty and dusty with her uncle, beaming with curiosity at various excavation sites. Claire glanced slightly at the envelope that contained things pertaining to her time with Frank and shoved it back deep into the locker. There was a final one of her during the beginning of her nurse’s training, smiling optimistically for the camera in her uniform at the train station, oblivious to the gruesome years to come sewing back shattered men and hiding from the sky itself.
She boarded the train without fuss the next morning. No one was travelling during the New Year. They were all settled in with their families enjoying their feasts. So Claire enjoyed the luxury of an empty compartment within the train and patted her suitcase reassuringly.
The Reverend would be away for the week to substitute for a minister who had taken ill on short notice. The house was left to Roger, Claire, and Mrs. Graham.
“Och, Claire, it’s sae fine seeing ye again.” The short woman gathered her in her arms, bringing her down to her level. “Would ye like a cuppa?”
“That would be wonderful Mrs. Graham, thank you.”
She puttered about in the kitchen and instructed Claire to place her luggage in the second room to the right up the stairs. The door creaked open to a light room covered in a rosey wallpaper. Claire was glad it wasn’t the same room she had stayed in months ago. She set her things on the bed and returned downstairs to where the elderly woman had already set up the cups with tea on the small circular table. Tarot cards were strewn all over the tablecloth. Claire presumed Mrs. Graham wanted to take a peek into her future once again. Seeing no use in delaying the inevitable, Claire launched into her questions.
“What do you know about the stones Mrs. Graham?”
“Och, please call me Mairi, lass. I’m sae glad ye called over before ye arrived here, didna want ye to be disappointed. I looked through some of my mother’s old things, and there were many journals passed down through the matrilineal line. It would have been a mess to try to find them in short notice, but I managed to find the box just in time. One of them details the subject of powerful stones holding the Earth’s energy itself within them. Ye can read through dear and I’ll wait fer any questions.” She stood up to fetch something from the counter near the oven and returned with a smooth brown book.
She looked closely over the scribbled notes and drawings in the small leather-bound book. It most likely could fit into her coat pocket and she was amazed at the artistry of something so old. The pages were weathered yellow like they had been soaked in tea and there were tears in some spots, but it didn’t hinder the journal’s abilities to instruct. Within it contained certainties, speculations, doubts, and even contradictions coming back to scribble that human sacrifice was indeed  not necessary  and  strongly discouraged from the earlier statement regarding it as a necessity. Different hands amended the pages, added different textured paper when the pages ran out, and ripped out some to little stubs close to the spine.
A calendar was sketched into the very first page, listing fire festivals at each point of a star. Imbolc. That was the closest date. She had missed Yule while in the ward and cursed herself. She would have to wait a month more, if the information written down in the battered book was to be believed. After months of separation, what more was one month? But her soul agonised over the fact that she was so close to the stones, but their strange attributes limited her. Would the nagging feeling of anxiety for her son ever waver? Or did this new sabbatical mean she would be too late?
 “So Imbolc, a fire feast?”
“Aye, most all o’ the journals in my grove ha’ something similar. It’s always, a gem and a fire feast. Many other suggestions have been quite unsettling.”
“So when I came through, on April the 16th, I was two weeks away-”
“Lass dinna work yerself up o’er that jes now. Ye canna blame anyone, it’s jes,” the kind woman squeezed Claire’s hand in comfort, “jes the way things went.”
“But, I put my baby in danger, and it killed him.” She couldn’t help the wobble of her lip and the big fat tear that rolled down her cheek.
“Ye dinna even ken if he could ha’ gone through at the proper time anyway.” Mrs. Graham hooked her weathered finger under Claire’s chin and brought her gaze towards her. “I know it might not be what ye want to hear right now, but perhaps yer baby saved ye. Ye couldna ha’ travelled alone, even wi’ yer wee gem.”
“But why take my baby? Why not me?”
“The way I see it, the stones only wanted one tae live that day. And if yer baby survived while ye died, weel it wouldna ha’ survived anyway wi’out ye. It doesna do well to dwell on the past lass. The only thing ye can do is look to the future and move forward. Go to yer lad. Yer soul kens what yer brain refuses to. The boy needs ye.”
“What if I’m too late? The death certificate-”
“Have faith, Claire, yer- Frank researched tirelessly to find his fate. If he wasna going to make it, yer soul wouldna be in overdrive to return to him.”
 “Yes, of course. Faith.”
“Fer now we bide, and I’ll help ye prepare. These are lean years yer returning to, ye’ll need all the help ye can get.”
The greying woman stood up to leave but Claire placed a hand on her arm to stop her. “Thank you Mairi, for everything.”
For the next month, Claire helped Mrs. Graham tidy the manse and watch after Roger. Her heart had warmed to the small boy instantly and she played planes with him whenever he asked, mimicking the noises and spreading out her arms wide to fly across the garden. Reverend Wakefield, much to his own chagrin, helped Claire smuggle some supplies from the hospital, during his visits to the ailing and injured who couldn’t attend church. He even found a set of knives that were close to being pitched before he intervened and saved them from the dumpster. Claire passed those weeks amongst pleasant company in the manse, and knew she would miss her friends dearly. To her surprise, Graham Munro, the kind boy who had brought her to the hospital from the stones, visited the manse occasionally and would take up a game of cards with her and Roger. The seven-year-old won almost every game they played; Claire and Graham had made the mistake of having him lose and much to their dismay he had started a tantrum that lasted for four hours. One evening, he had sulked into Claire’s room, his cheeks tracked with fresh tears from a nightmare and she pulled him close, murmuring to the young boy. Yes, she would miss them all terribly.
Mrs. Graham worked on the logistics of Claire’s dress; she was impossible at sewing, knitting, and practically any other domestic task. A plain white slip dress was transformed into a shift, extra yards of wool were donated through her druid friends which turned into her various layers of skirts, and an old blue raincoat fit for a giant was found in the closet and transformed into a cloak of sorts to cover the fact of missing stays.
On the First of February, close to midnight, Claire, Roger, Mrs. Graham, and Reverend Wakefield climbed into the Reverend’s black car. Roger was bouncing off the back seat next to Claire, excited at being awake way past his bedtime. Reverend Wakefield had driven them to the stones to humour them, still not quite believing in the absurd story. A leather messenger bag sat on Claire’s lap, practically bursting from the contents within it. She had already dressed into her new clothes that would not be so conspicuous in the eighteenth century. Her heart raced as the headlights from the car illuminated the grey stone at the top of the hill.
Claire offered a short sentence of gratitude for the Reverend’s hospitality and then moved on to her fast friend Mairi. He lingered back behind the line of the stones with his arms around Roger. Claire shared a heartfelt goodbye with Mrs. Graham and thanked her profusely. Tears clung to her eyelashes and she pecked the small woman on the cheek. Roger was inconsolable when he felt the atmosphere shift. He thought it was a fun adventure with his new friend, not the finality of a goodbye.
“No Miss Claire! I dinna want ye to leave!” He slobbered into her stomach and held tight to the buttons of her cloak.
“I’m sorry, Roger. I’ll miss playing pilot with you terribly. Will you keep this safe for me?” She reached into her pocket and pulled out a toy rocket, the new fascination of young boys. Planes were old news, but space was exciting.
“Aye!” He tried to be brave like his father said his parents had been. She shoved back the hair from his eyes as he looked up at her with glassy eyes and a snotty nose.
 “What do ye say, Roger?”
“Thank ye, Miss Claire!” He hugged her tight.
He took the plastic object from Claire’s hands and skipped over to his father. His mood had instantly changed and he was happily distracted from the severity of the moment. They all walked slowly towards the stones, Roger hand in hand with his father. The buzzing swarmed through Claire’s ears and she was standing near the centre cleft now.
 “Father, what’s that noise?”
“Stay put Roger.” He tightened his grip on his son’s shoulders, fear laced into his voice.
With one last tearful glance of goodbye, Claire vanished. The group was left stunned, even Mrs. Graham. Hearing certainly was not seeing.
“Mama?” She felt the soft curiosity of a child’s mind amongst all the screams of anguish and hopelessness. “It’s okay. You can go home now.”
She pulled her towards her, guiding her mother gently.
“I love you, mama. Tell da I love him too.”
Was it really the child she had lost, or a delusion her mind had conjured? One thing she was certain of though deep in her bones. She had been a girl. A beautiful soul.
