Armour of Ignorance ︎ 09.02.2023 Lately, I’ve been considering re pledging my allegiance to the Zuck - and by that I mean reinstating my facebook profile as an active entity. Dig up fossils of my thirteenth birthday and begin sharing updates about my life, lighting up the faces of overseas cousins and my old boss. With a second thought, I don’t really want to do this, facebook is irrevocably lame - but some instinct is ticking over in my brain. I guess I just love to be a devil's advocate, instilling in myself an attitude towards feigned ignorance. Yeah alright im a hipster - a post ironic, meme riddled culture louse. This isn't unusual amongst my generation though, we are doomers - eloped in a world plagued by the threat of war, unstable economies, pandemics and the rocky idea of a future so our only amour to this forefront humor, and irony at that. Meme fashion came to rise mid last year, calling it that already ruins the joke. You’ll find your local swag lord rocking a ‘I Fucking Love Micro-plastics’ hat from Haunted Starbucks, it girl promoting her “Flop Era” on a custard yellow micro tee from OGBFF, or your dero friend embodying an informative recipe upon his sternum of “How to Cook Meth” (also from haunted starbucks). Not everyones going to get it, especially if you didn’t have an internet connection growing up, but those who do are uniting in the spirit of post irony. It’s a great tactic in coping with the influx of terrible news befelding our world, siding sarcastically with the doom climate, and as a nihilist myself, I think it's incredibly endearing. Many global problems are far beyond our reach and out of our control which makes it simply the most relieving sight to see gangsta sponge bob fanning his rack at me and informing me to get my bands up, and an erotic sonic cartoon in support of the Joe Rogan podcast. The typefaces commonly used in these garments are reminiscent of 2010’s slogan tees and the like which makes me curious if this is an early adoption of motifs from this period, I’m thinking clothing that harbored jokes on the early days of iPhones and internet culture (like the iPoop t-shirts you might see on a street vendor stall). They also pay homage to a DIY culture and attitude, brought on from the pandemic mundanity. Here in Melbourne you’ll find any of these pieces in the wardrobes of smelly inner city shared houses, on the backs of rich stay at home sons, hot ravers and e-girls that frequent Collingwood bars. The attitudes of these kinds tend to be in the defense of their ego’s, don’t point out the joke or you’ll become it. Wearers are on their high horse about a supreme sense of humor. Observe, laugh and carry on from a distance - feel free to send them a DM of appreciation on Instagram however. These people are not mean, simply they’re chronically online and often forget how to be friendly without the support of an emoji. As for the trend itself, memes as an art form are not going anywhere so it will be interesting to see how it evolves. Humor carries a sentiment that tends to get stored in a time capsule and won’t hit the same a few years down the line so we will see how these pieces hold up. Right now the comedy is still gold but as more people catch on to the trend it’s becoming less impactful on the street scene. What also makes it different is the bravery it takes to wear an ironic slogan tee for the backlash you might face to those not in on the joke - I’m sure this trend won’t trickle to the high street market or even make it out of the underground. Hallelujah! More so, what will this over saturation of post-irony do to us? Will we be pushed back in the direction of the earnest or will we become post, post, post ironic (surely we can make a better phrase for that concept!)  I’m very interested to follow this one.

Repeated actions tied with particular objects or places, like typing in passwords, remain the best, imprinted over and over again. Needs physical contact for best results. Difficult to turn off. Can pick up muscle memory or subconscious actions, but only in those ways; if the original person can fold a crane with muscle memory but struggles to teach others fold-by-fold, absorbed memory will also be unable to recall each fold.

An unexpected addition with big dreams, high hopes, and the lungs to match.

Emits a powerful scream of a high amplitude that can incapacitate opponents. 
- Impact Manipulation
Range: Direct Contact
Can absorb and redirect some, but not all, kinetic energy, manipulating the strength of impacts and allowing her to bounce off surfaces without sustaining any damage. Can be used to deflect bullets and physical attacks.

A volatile newbie with a brave heart, a rocky start, and some questionable priorities.

FF7 Remake Review (Characters)
Next are characters, which I more or less already knew before this but have more context now: (only minor spoilers for this part)
Cloud-
He’s like Finn from Star Wars, Ex Shinra, Ex Stormtrooper, they know the ins and outs of the enemies. He really takes it serious about his money though, in a way I could see why with the slums and all as well as it being an excuse to hide his feelings but I just didn’t expect it. It sounds like one of his battle quotes is “It’s time” and I say out loud “Time to de-evilize!” He has a few similar to Sora too that I like. But I have a bit of a pet peeve...LET ME PLAY AS YOUNG CLOUD AND TIFA $%^*&#@!

Villains-
Is Sephiroth a cross between Palpatine and Scar? “Let the hate consume you.” The other villains such as Heidigger (who is voiced by John DiMaggio of all people) are kind of annoying to be honest, I was bored every scene he was in, I like John DiMaggio, it made me think we were fighting Dr. Drakken, scar and all but I just don’t think we need to see him deploy the enemies every time, it just seems pointless. It’s not a hamper on the story or anything, I mean there are tons of villains in games that are just there and it’s fine all the same, plus we have better villains in the game so it evens out.
Barrett-
He’s cool and gosh dang Marlene is adorable. But Barrett plays pretty nicely, it’d be kind of cool if he was the exception to gameplay type and went full on 3rd person shooter and you could just aim all over the place but he’s still really fun to play.
Tifa-
is a sweetheart. When I first saw her character, it was in KH2 and she was tearing apart this room, punching walls, and kicking down doors to find Cloud. While she keeps the strength, maybe she acted like that in the original but not here. I hear that personalities between her and Aerith have changed over time? Like there are different versions and they act different since there’s FF7, Advent Children, Crisis Core and this remake, maybe it’s just the fan perception, I’m not sure. Oh and I played Tifa’s theme on the jukebox and she started bobbing her head, so they respond to the music you play.
I know doing some of the mundane sounding side quests with Tifa, made them a whole lot better, when I said it helps the world building, I wasn’t kidding, she made me feel motivated like “Yeah this is a life in the slums but she’s making the best of it and I’m comfortable.” I’d say her play style (in Smash terms) would be similar to Sonic, she’s fast (there’s even a speed upgrade you can get) but carries a punch if you have the right equipment.
Red XIII-
They call him a ‘lab rat dog’ but he’s a lion...right? He’s not in it a whole lot so I don’t have much to say about him other than him having a killer design and he and Barrett make the best joke of the game (the car one). You don’t play as him which I believe you could in the original, he still helps out with damage though which brings me to another topic, I know I finished gameplay but this would’ve been a great opportunity to use more reaction commands, you don’t really see them in much of any game any more, they’re like the Star Wars prequels, you don’t realize what you have until it’s gone, there are a good bit of moments like that.
Aerith-
Trust me, I loved climbing rooftops with her. One thing I see pointed out is that she’s a bit more sassy in this version, it’s kind of funny at times. Her dodge could use a little work though I could say that she’s not an experienced fighter like the others yet her magic came in clutch for me time and time again. Both her and Tifa are cool with kids but Aerith and that scene in Chapter 12 was the first part I got chills.
I didn’t do all of the Chapter 8 (Sector 5, where Aerith is) side quests because I did the first few and hated them, those hedgehog pies and smoggers are really annoying, I figured whoever I choose, I’ll make up for it later. Now I’m going to put this is in a context so people who played understand and those who haven’t won’t since I’m not technically into the story section. The whole secret with Aerith is just weird in my opinion, I mean it ties in with the story and is in the original but I had to look that up, I actually thought that that would’ve been one of the big changes they made but no.
What route did I take? I knew beforehand that I would have to kind of sway towards one character or another, whether that be Tifa or Aerith and so on but I never knew who I was going to pick pre-game. I kind of tried to stay mindful of what exactly I was choosing while at the same time just doing it “my way” and see what happens, who I’ll like better. What I hate is that you have to choose before you give both girls a fair shot and get proper introduction because you have to do all the quests in chapter 3 to get Tifa and skip it to get Aerith (you could probably still save it because of the date points but still). It said you have to pick someone regardless whether you do the quests or not so I thought maybe do all the quests in Ch.3 and 8 then go from there, it got to the point where I decided to pick Barrett just so I wouldn’t have to decide but at that point the “point” system was already too high for each of the girls, Barrett’s route was already disabled. The big decision between the two was the sewers which I kind of have to appreciate how that was done. I even made a comparison list because of how much I was thinking about it and whoever got more...you think I’m joking?

Yeah bad handwriting but I couldn’t come up with any bad things for Tifa other than her trying to be mature, only a few for Aerith as you can see however I actually ended up looking up something that put things in a certain perspective, Aerith saw Zack in Cloud when he was messed up, that might be why she likes him while Tifa likes the real him hence the scene afterwards in the original (plus I think I even heard her call him Zack during combat (unless I misheard, I can’t find any evidence online)). So that means I picked the dress for Tifa, Exotic. Also look at this and tell me that doesn’t fit Aerith.

So those are my ships, I’ll update what happened with them in the story section.
The others in Avalanche, I’ll just lodge together. Wedge, I don’t see why they got Matt L Jones to play him but he also doesn’t do anything so whatever. Biggs is kind of cool I guess, just another hot shot. I’m surprised Jessie got the part she did after playing through the first section, I expected her to be forgotten about after that but no, apparently the remake gave them bigger roles, in the original they were very limited. But Jessie’s pretty cool, my favorite of the bunch and I helped her out when I could but I didn’t choose the “no promises” date option or anything (does that mean I led her on? Is that bad in a video game?) You don’t play as them though, I get that they tried to vary gameplay types with each person and these guys had very similar styles to others already (and you can’t just play as every character you see).
Quick graphics section, you already know they look good, I mean it’s even better than Advent Children (which I haven’t saw much of other than models and screenshots) and that was obviously prerendered CGI but I couldn’t imagine being a fan of the original and seeing these updated designs, not even of the characters but enemies. I was looking at why you can use cure on ghosts and it brought me to the original FF7 wiki and I saw what they used to look like (granted they look cool) but I just never expected such a upscale. It’s something fans can appreciate, and also goes the other way around, I could tell some scenes were from the original and were really improved on, it almost gave me a sense of nostalgia and I never even played the game, this was made with love.

honestly my dream sonic cartoons are: 
1. reboots of aosth/satam/underground/x/boom  2. post reboot archie/idw sonic animated adaptations 3. slice of life shorts compilation based on sonic channel art 4. a mix between adaptations of game stories and original in between plots
1 - i have my personal reasons for each of these
aosth - im just curious to see wacky slapstick shenanigans with the current cast tbh sjdhgfgh. also updated art style would be nice, tho i presume they would use the “calarts” style
satam - s3 would make more sense, buut i like a fresh start better. keep the darker tone compared to satam but update the character designs, make the nature vs technology conflict more neutral, change antoine’s personality to be on the lines of his post-reboot archie version, and not make sonic look stupid compared to sally
on the character designs part, perhaps to make it more distinguished from other sonic media, they could change sonic/tails/every game character’s design to match how the freedom fighters look. its both consistent and a throwback!
obviously more characters added. i think they start off like the original series (with a bonus mighty and ray cuz why not), then introduce amy, knuckles, and metal sonic in the second season. more get introduced throughout the rest of the series, obviously
i honestly kinda see this one happening at some point bc of the rebooting old cartoons trend. sega is also catering to nostalgic fans, and while its mainly game centered, perhaaapss they might end up focusing a little on the group of people who REALLY want this one cartoon back
(or not bc of penders bullshit who knows)
underground - ik this one has a mixed to negative reception with fans, but i think it had potential and a reboot could REALLY help out it’s reputation if done well. i think having a more stable plotline and characters that actually look like sonic characters (yeah i know satam characters look like generic furries, but underground....has an entirely different way of design) might grab better interest
also give sonia a better voice pls
sonic x - this is the one i REALLY wish would happen. sonic x is a very important show to me as it helped me get into the franchise, and im not sure where id be without it tbh
but i KNOW its full of flaws and honestly? id love to see a version with them fixed

Happy Halloween! Update Time.
Hello everybody, not going to spill text on twitter because of the post limit.
Just recently I changed my username and the avater I normally use. I wanted to stop using that stupid cringy name, it should now be far different than before.
Say goodbye to metalsonic71, and hello to SpookyBurrito. I named it that way cause Spooky is in a blanket. Not a burrito, a blanket. I also like weeb shit and cuddly things like plushies and anime figures. Sounds a lot more like me than a name giving you the impression of a 12 year old who logged on Roblox for the first time. I can’t completely change my username on every platform, but as long as everyone still recognizes me then it doesn’t really matter.

I’ve been feeling like shit this month, I had no interest in streaming.
Still unwillingly playing GTA:O. Finally got the stupid mark 2 oppressor, while its fun to mess around with, I have no interest in using this thing in lobby's because the buzzard does the same thing and doesn’t count as a griefer vehicle. I hate griefers, but what I can’t stand the KD hungry tryhards even more.
Not saying gta online is a bad game, at times it can be far more fun than the campaign. Other times it’s not worth even looking at the players, they all look and act the same to me at this point it becomes so mundane, repetitive, and obvious it’s like sticking your head in a cactus and wondering why it hurts.
Need to know why I hate this fucking game so much?
There’s people who play contact missions, and are so fucking impatient that the whole lobby will kick you, just for not having the oppressor's mark 2. Even with a armored kuruma!
My plan was too get to a point where I can put off the game for a full year so if I ever play it again, I won’t be spending 12 hours to make enough money to buy a flying car.

Have other games in mind to get back into, sonic adventure 2 on xbox sounds like the better version to play. Gamecube memory cards are dogshit, they corrupt far too easily and are fragile and tiny with little data space.
I would have stuck to steam, but there’s no cloud saving. What sucks though is that chao can’t really be transferred and can only hold 1 file. I don’t even think you can transfer individual chao from 1 file to another like on gamecube, but that doesn’t matter that much, I still have my 180 emblem file on there so, fuck the gamecube version.

Bunch of sorcery
Have some sorcery spells I’ve fiddled with for exalted 3e. Some ideas and thoughts and fun with magic. Some from the black and white treatise of 2e and updated for the new times. 
Terrestrial Circle
The Horse that travels earth and water Cost: 10sm As the sorcerer makes the Sign of the Horseman, the winds in his area converge in the bubble of Essence before him. The Essence takes a hue that indicates the nearest Elemental Pole—red in the South, blue in the North, green in the East, black in the West and white nearest the Imperial Mountain—and then forms itself into a horse-shaped being. The horse’s coat matches the bubble of Essence whence it came, though its mane and tail are either black or white. The horse lands next to the caster, tossing and stamping, eager to be ridden. It serves as perfect warhorse with a speed rating of 4. The stallion never tires and gallops over water as easily as land and moves at a speed of 25 mph (around 40 km/h). It can travel at its full speed until the sun next crosses the horizon (whether rising or setting), at which point it dissipates into colored wind and is gone.
It can carry another rider other than the sorcerer, but the sorcerer must command it to do so and give it a destination. The horse will then move at full speed toward that destination, regardless of what its passenger wishes. It ignores attempts to redirect it. If the passenger falls or jumps from the stallion’s saddle, the horse dissipates, its purpose fulfilled. The automaton does not like being used as a pack mount. Should someone try to use it as such, reduces it's speed rating to 1.
Control effect: A sorcerer who knows the horse that travels earth and water as their control spell has the horse take on aspects of her anima or person. Such as traits of other animals from the anima or wearing standards and seals of her anima on it's tackle. The duration is also changed to indefinite.
Distort: 8 When distorted the steed becomes unruly and requires a successful dex+ride difficulty 3 roll once every hour to remain riding.
(While it looks innocous and not worth it at first. It’s worth noting that mounted combat is pretty legit in 3e, doesn’t require a commitment goes over water and is pretty subtle for the concerned sorcerer. It also takes until essence 4 for Cirrus skiff to match it in raw speed. All in all it’s a versatile spell that looks less powerful than it is until you look at mounted combat)
Raise the Dragon's Bones Ritual 1wp
The military forces of both Lookshy and the Realm make frequent use of this spell, which enables military sorcerers to raise earthworks and tone walls for defensive positions or otherwise to reshape a battlefield to their advantage. The sorcerer first marks out the area he wants to affect by driving cut sapling branches into the ground and infusing them with his anima. He can do so up to ([Intelligence + War or Craft + Essence] x 10) yards in any direction. The sorcerer also paces along the line of any berms, mottes, buildings or trenches he wishes to construct. The area must also be cleared of any creature larger than a rabbit.
When the sorcerer casts the spell, he visualizes the structure he wants to create. The paced lines and sapling poles glow ocher-yellow as earth and stone flow like wax to shape themselves into the proper forms. Casting the sorcery is a five-minute dramatic action. No structure raised by this spell can exceed three stories in height or depth, and available materials limit the sorcerer. He cannot raise stone walls in the bottomless sand-seas of the South, for instance. Once the structures exist, countermagic has no effect: They were shaped by sorcery but are not themselves magical.
During a strategic manuever, as long as her enemy does not succeed with an ambush, the sorcerer can apply the fortifications stratagem for free even without succeeding on a manuever roll.
Sorcerers that know Raise the Dragon's Bones as their control spell rarely face difficulty as long as her feet remain against the earth. As such she cannot suffer any difficult terrain penalties if she's touching stone or earth. Even if moving through a battlegroup.
Distort 8 an enemy sorcerer in a strategic planning phase of mass combat can attempt to distort the spell and nullify the army’s advantage, ensuring that only light cover exists in the terrain for individual combatants and that it counts as normal terrain for both parts.
(Simple and easy really. It’s a simple very Realm and Lookshy bog-standard sorcerer-general kind of spell with relatively powerful control effect in order to counteract the fact that it’s not combat castable, which also has non-war applications if you so chose!)
Multitudinous Magic Missile Massacre Cost:  5sm+ 1wp
The sorcerer gathers essence from the world around her and forms it into projectiles to strike at her foes from a distance. These often take the shape depending on the sorcerer’s shaping rituals or initiation into sorcery. When cast she generates 3 projectiles +1 for every 2 additional sorcerous mote she desires to gather. These last until the end of the scene and can be used with either archery or thrown whereupon they count as artifact ranged weapons and have the following tags.
Archery version: Lethal, Mounted, Archery (Medium), Crossbow, Two-handed. Special Thrown Version: Lethal, Mounted, Thrown (Medium), (Is considered to be launched with Strength 4), Two-handed. Special
Both versions may gain special traits from the sorcerer’s initiation or even aspect in the case of the Dragonblooded. Such as able to cause fires, sonic booms, poisons or even disease. These effects should be considered mostly aesthetic or fluff for stunt material rather than hard mechanical benefit. 
When cast, the sorcerer must decide upon which version, thrown or archery, the missiles are. They use the apropriate ability and dexterity for attacks as normal and may use appropriate charms with a 1m extra surcharge.
A sorcerer who knows Multitudinous Magic Missile Massacre as her control spell may create evocations for the missiles.
Distort 5 when distorted the missiles count as mundane weapons and also lack the special tag, the fire isn’t hot enough to burn, the disease barely a sniffle or the creeping shadows have all the impact of a shadow puppet. A lethal shadow puppet but puppet nonetheless.
(A simple enough terrestrial spell for the person who want to throw magic missiles around but doesn’t have a merit that would otherwise allow them to do so (like burning name). If you don’t want sorcerers to do this in your setting that’s fine, it’s just an option and idea.)
Celestial Circle
Mountains Molded as Clay Ritual 3 wp
The sorcerer gathers a lump of fresh clay and mixes it with soil from the area she intends to mold. After performing a three hour ritual of infusing the clay with essence from the area, the lump takes the shape of the area around the sorcerer for essence x 5 miles. After which she may reshape the ground as she desires with a few limitations. *The ground under structures requires a sample of the soil beneath the structure in order to be moldable. *It cannot be shaped to destroy or ruin structures. *The sorcerer cannot add or remove mineral resources to the ground. (Such as metals, minerals used for metalwork or crystals etc.) Creating rivers or lakes is fine however. *Spirits who live or are located in the area can resist the changes of the ground if it damages or hurts their domain significantly. (This should be used as a ST's fiat to deny parts of a change)
Once she has finished forming the ground, she makes another ritual and the clay sinks into the ground. Whereupon the ground will begin to shift into the sorcerer's desired shape over the course of a week. with certain things))
Distortion: 10 If distorted the ground becomes uneven and jagged in the spots she changed and counts as difficult terrain.
(A terraforming spell! You can’t really add stuff into the ground, you can in theory make an area more defensible. Or make a lake, but it’s uses are kindof limited in game terms and is mostly fluff, but interesting fluff! I figured that making a hill is not a craft endavour because any person can shovel dirt and make a big enough mound, it just takes time. But this spell changes that and comes with a ST fiat to say “no fucking space needles or buggy geometry kthx.”)
Heavenly Citadel Formulation. Ritual 3 wp
The sorcerer traces the ground with chalk in perfect unison with the lines of a design of a structure. In each corner she places a rock and draws a line between them in ink. In the centre she places a miniature of the structure she desires to build. After everything is placed, she steps out of it and speaks ancient words of construction several times and pace over the grounds for the next ten hours. Over the course of the next twenty-four hours. The building raises itself from the ground.
She can construct any form of mundane structure this way. Building the miniature and drawing up the building plans requires the normal crafting rolls for the structure in mind and requires the crafting skills necessary for a non-minituraized version of the structure (carpentry, masonry etc.), the structure can be a major or even a superior project in terms of scope. However, the interval at which she may roll for the miniature and plans together is once per day and they have a terminus of 5, the miniature must be fresh for the amgic to work. As the magic in the spell provides the materials of the structure, unless the materials needed are magical or rare, such as salt, gold, silver, etc. or simply completely unavailible at the location. Granite next to volcanos, wood in the desert, sandstone in the frozen wastes.
Distort: 15 If distorted during the casting the structure become warped and wrong. Corridors don't lead where they're supposed to, doors open into walls, or windows sit between floor. Fortifications don't protect as well as they should either, fortified structures afflicted by distortions cannot have more than light cover against attackers and most of it counts as difficult terrain for everyone.
(Remember Raise the puissant sanctum? Yeah let’s not spam manses any more but it would be fun to instantly build things! It’s best if the sorcerer is a crafter as well but it can be outsourced. The long ritual prevents it from being spammed every day but still allows you to build impressive structures in a relatively short amount of time with few resources, although doing so is probably going to be a dead giveaway that you’re anathema to the local immaculate monks. And possibly upset regional lords if you just do it on their grounds without saying anything. So use with care. I considered having a control effect that the sorcerer would gain a permanent fascination with building models and miniatures of things and gain an extra dice on any craft project that involved small objects and a desire to build a model village at some point.)
God-Forged Champion of War. Ritual 3wp
The sorcerer pulls essence from the air around her and suffuses it into her body, creating a startling transformation of her being. After a half a hour long ritual, the sorcerer's body grows and expands until she is the size of a warstrider and remains such for an amount of hours equal to her permanent essence rating. During this time she has to attune her own personal essence for the spell as well and commit 10m for the duration. For the duration however she's considered to be wearing heavy artifact armor, regardless of what armor she wears in actuality. All her weapons and armor changes size with her but only confer the reaching tag on all melee attacks against smaller targets.
While under the effect of God-Forged Champion of War, the sorcerer gains the following merits.
Legendary size: Withering attacks made by smaller enemies cannot drop the sorcerer below 1 Initiative unless they have a post-soak damage of at least 10 dice, though they award attacks the full amount of initiative. Decisive attacks by smaller opponents can’t inflict more than 3+Strength levels of damage to a Warstrider, not counting any levels of damage added by charms of other magic.
Health: The sorcerer gains +2x0/+1x-1/+2x-2/+1x-4 whilst transformed.
Titanic strength: She gains two to her strength score, for the purposes of feats of strength, both for her dice pool and calculating what feats of strength she is capable of and damage, even if this brings her over 5. These do not add to charm caps however. Additionally she may double her strength score of feats of strength for situations where her tremendous size provides an advantage.
Colossal Rampage: The sorcerer becomes exceptionally effective against large groups of closely packed human-sized enemies. Battle Groups suffer a -2 penalty to Defense against her attacks. Her withering attacks double their post-soak damage against Battle Groups, while her Decisive attacks deal one automatic level of bonus damage for every 2 dice rolled, rather than for every 4.
Tiny Targets: Against single normal sized targets, the sorcerer gains less initiative when the smaller target applies their evasion against her attack. When they target applies their evasion, the sorcerer deals (base evasion /2 rounded down) less initiative damage (min 1) on a successful attack.
A sorcerer who knows God-Forged Champion of War as their control spell are unnaturally strong even not in a colossal form, in a normal state she is considered to have two more strength than she actually does for the meeting the requirements of attempting certain feats of strength where being large can be advantageous. Her shadow also become unnaturally long compared to her peers and have an uncanny ability to loom over others.
Distort 10: When distorted by another sorcerer, the sorcerer's sense of balance becomes impaired and is not scaled for the sorcerer's new size. Thusly she  becomes massively clumsy, all actions get a -3 penalty and her dv receives a -2 penalty
(Kindof long-winded and uses @winterwombat​ ‘s warstrider rules so mad props to em. I think it straddles the line between “you can’t always use it” (because the benefits are hueg (see what I did there?)) because of the ritual cast and having the spell doesn’t make getting a warstrider redundant and having a warstrider doesn’t make the spell redundant even though it kinda does the same thing. And it comes with a weakness to quick nimble people and a very steep willpower cost and attunement.

Regarding how the review will go, despite how many fans might appreciate “Wee Woo” as being catchy and unique or that it merely needs extra playbacks to be deemed good as many fans have claimed, I disagree that the song is satisfying or even unique. Harshly said, I find that “Wee Woo” is a highly generic pop song if we focus on certain strategies the composers have employed, and furthermore, while the song’s generic, bubbly musical concept appears as unique we still ultimately have to realize it is just that: generic.
Personal Message: It is currently “dead week” for my university—a term that refers not to the fact that professors are no longer assigning work due to the week before finals, but rather to the fact that students are mentally dead. Morbid humor aside, I do want to clarify to readers that I am indeed alive—although finals are actually happening right on May 1. This semester has been quite busy and thus, reviews for April were essentially nonexistent. In fact if correct, April saw only one review—if excluding the April’s Fool prank: EXO’s “Call Me Baby.” For this summer break, while I will be finally learning how to drive and taking up a few non-official jobs, I expect it to be quite free and thus I will spend a lot of time catching up on reviews. Furthermore, I feel inspired to finally begin learning how to write much more concisely and effectively. As a result, readers might be seeing a review every other day during summer, and even once the next semester comes around—one that will be the most challenging and busy—I would at least be able to review a song every four days versus the current school schedule of a review per week or two weeks.
And so, let us already begin focusing on PRISTIN and less on technical updates. As readers might have noticed, the prior post did involve PRISTIN: I wrote a Critical Discussion post regarding an incident the ladies and their staff had with a rather questionable “fan.” Readers who are curious should refer to the post itself as I will no longer comment on it directly. But indeed, the topic regarding genuinely obsessed fans is one that should be addressed and cared about and thus, I hope readers spend some time either reading the post or at least pondering over it.
On topic with PRISTIN, however, in a musical sense, I have planned to review “Wee Woo” at least three days after it was released. Quite clearly, three days somehow became two months or so. However, even if “Wee Woo” is no longer trending in the sense of being a recent comeback, I find that the song’s composition is fascinating and is perhaps one that entails not just a discussion on the song in of itself, but also a discussion on debut songs in general. For what I mean, especially if we bear in mind PRISTIN’s first album and those other songs that have been composed and executed, “Wee Woo” is—in my opinion—a far inferior song than many of the other songs within the ladies’ first album. “Wee Woo,” then, is what I personally term a “high-risk; high-reward” song—and in the context of how this is PRISTIN’s debut song, it actually makes sense on why a potentially weaker song would be used over much stronger songs that exist in their album.

Analysis: Sometimes I do wonder if my current university-related stress is making me overly critical. But, I hope with my reasons and arguments, readers can see where my position comes from and of course, I definitely encourage readers to openly disagree with my reviews as the very purpose of them is that: to start discussions. With the review, as we can tell, the song scores disturbingly low: a three for below average. This has definitely not occurred in quite some time, but unfortunately “below average” serves as the appropriate term I would use to describe “Wee Woo.”
Already, one significant problem to “Wee Woo” is how the vocals are executed. The choruses provide the best example: much of the vocals follow an overly strained, higher pitched sound and at the choruses themselves, auto-tune has been used in the production stage to create a robotic sound. Now before further expanding that point, a clarification is needed: contrary to the belief that auto-tune is automatically used to “fix” singing, auto-tune in a majority of situations is purposefully used for merely its sound effects. After all, auto-tune rarely “fixes” singing and—as in “Wee Woo” ‘s case—it arguably does the opposite with breaking singing. Thus, it is the effect the composers are seeking out and indeed, PRISTIN are all very capable vocalists as seen in other album songs. But on topic for why this matters, the auto-tune used here and equally the overly strained, high pitched singing are detrimental to the song in whole. All of this creates an excessively mundane sound in the song as there are minimal deviations in the physical sound itself: everything—barring perhaps moments at the pre-choruses—is sung in this strained, robotic-like sound. That is definitely not beneficial if the song itself does not manipulate that for other purposes.
To compare “Wee Woo” to a song that does arguably use auto-tune to a beneficial effect, T-ARA’s “Sugar Free” is the song that comes to mind. In “Sugar Free,” the auto-tune part is to build upon the instrumental’s already robotic sounds, and additionally, the important feature in “Sugar Free” is that the auto-tuned singing is used to contrast to standard, highly tuneful vocal beltings that occur at the choruses. In “Wee Woo,” though, we do not see any of those strategies implement; rather, we merely hear auto-tune for its individual sonic appeal—and sadly, that is an unwise decision in my view as auto-tune is best used on a structural and strategic sense rather than an appealing sound. But before “Wee Woo” ‘s auto-tune is completely disregarded as useless, I do admit it has its strength in the song’s structure: the auto-tune singing and the overly strained singing create a distinctive, highlight point in the choruses and that serves as an easily identifiable climax to the song. However, this is a marginal benefit as the downside to this idea—the loss of vocal appeal and even overall sonic appeal in general—is far more significant.
As for other problems we encounter, I find that many of the song’s sections are questionable composed—even if, indeed, there are some brilliant thinking in mind. Let us examine the pre-chorus for an example. One interesting aspect to this section is how it essentially builds upon itself; in other words, the pre-choruses almost have a pre-chorus within themselves. We notice this by how the pre-chorus initiates with an upbeat, tuneful style but later transitions to a dramatic, slower style. That, though, is then used as a foundation for the transition point to send “Wee Woo” to its choruses. Quite obviously, on a superficial level, this is very creative composing—and indeed, it is and I do not wish to deny this. The composers do deserve credit for this creative and new take to pre-choruses. What is not foreseen, however, is how the pre-choruses ironically undermine themselves. On a general layer, the pre-chorus builds up the song but when the “second” or “inner” pre-chorus arrives, it ends up taking away that generated hype and instead starts the whole process right from where it began. This, though, does not create more hype in the long run. It is a method that is rather inefficient, if anything. If the song took the pre-choruses’ inner pause but then made such pause work in a manner so that when hype was built up again that the build up would then be perceived as even more intense, then this pre-chorus form would be quite beneficial. But in this case, it literally undermines its own work as any generated hype is simply removed.
Furthermore, this is also problematic when we consider how the instrumental is quite absent and plays a very passive role. Now, certainly it is typical for instrumental sounds to take a silent stance during pre-choruses as the return of said instrumental sounds can serve as a form of building hype and then reaching a climax, but in “Wee Woo,” the choruses return with a stereotypical, bouncy pop instrumental. In other words, the instrumental’s disappearance was not in hopes of creating hype as, if that was the case, the choruses would have had a much more impactful and exciting instrumental rather than the current instrumental that is plain. Thus, the expected trade of not having an active instrumental during the pre-choruses for a stronger chorus did not occur; instead, there is merely a loss of, in this case, having a stale pre-chorus for the sheer sake of it. (And of course to clarify, this is not to say all pre-choruses must have an active instrumental at play. Each review focuses on a song’s individual context, and in our case, “Wee Woo” ‘s main weakness of having minimal variety is why this structure to the pre-choruses is troubling.)
Finally, for another section worthy of mentioning—in a negative manner, that is—it would be the bridge. This section lacks in all areas: both sonically and structurally. On an aural level, the singing follows, as established throughout the song, a robotic and lifeless singing style. Structurally, the bridge’s dramatic pause fails to suit in with the rest of “Wee Woo,” and this sudden change was not gradually hinted throughout the song and thus, the bridge’s form is even more unsuitable to the song in whole.
And so, fans might be wondering if there are any possible strengths at all to “Wee Woo.” My answer: of course there are—every song has its strengths and weaknesses, after all. One strong point to “Wee Woo” is the rapping. Even if it is not the best per se, it is definitely a highlight of the song and is fluently transitioned to. Additionally, though, despite “Wee Woo” seemingly being a weaker song, we can argue that it ultimately still succeeds in a commercial sense—and this is what I hinted at earlier in this review regarding a discussion on “high-risk; high-reward.” With that cliché phrase, I hoped to capture the idea that “Wee Woo” is somewhat poorly composed not due to composers lacking the skills and knowledge or that PRISTIN are weak singers; instead, this was done to manipulate the attention PRISTIN would receive. Where the risk comes in is that, should this plan work—and I argue, it actually does—then it would be a huge success as PRISTIN would get more attention. On the other hand, should it fail, PRISTIN is left with minimally gained popularity and are rendered as a musically weak group.
To explain why the manipulation was a success and even what this “manipulation” is, for a debut song, we have to understand that the main goal is truthfully not musically orientated at all; rather, the truth is that debut songs are intended to garner as much attention as possible. Now of course, there are two main ways to approach such: through raw musical appeal or through merely getting attention such as through conceptual ideas of a comeback (examples being “cute,” “sexy,” “powerful,” “cool,” and the like). Pledis Entertainment chose the latter method with “Wee Woo”: getting attention not through music, but through sheer attention itself. This explains why the song is incredibly catchy and even excessively pop-like as all of these, even if musically unenticing, will gather attention—both good and bad. And if we follow this speculation, it also might explain why the rest of the album possesses the seemingly more complex and better composed songs: “Wee Woo” is the comeback to get attention; the rest of the album songs are for actual musical appeal.
Coming to the end of this review, what are fans to make of “Wee Woo,” then, and its relation to PRISTIN’s musical skills? Given that “Wee Woo” has led PRISTIN to gaining more popularity (and with how two members are former members of I.O.I), I do encourage fans to interpret “Wee Woo” less as a genuine musical piece and unfortunately more as a financial tool—even if this, indeed, is quite pessimistic and personally goes against what I consider music to stand for. More pessimistic individuals might claim that all pop music is composed with the intent of purely making profit, but I find that while money is of course in mind and necessary with creating music, it should never be the first priority. With “Wee Woo,” I critically believe that its intent was in fact to make money and gather attention, but at least the rest of the album songs appear to be composed with actual music appeal in mind.
All in all, while “Wee Woo” is by far one of the weaker songs I have heard in general, given that it has served its financial role, I hope future releases focus less on gaining attention and more on producing excellent songs—of which would, in turn, gain more fans for PRISTIN. Thus, fans should continue supporting the ladies regardless of their comeback song’s quality, and that those who are interested but repelled by “Wee Woo” ‘s weaker composition continue to stay interested as future releases will most likely be improvements.

Call Me But Love
Fandom: Doctor Who Rating: T Pairing: The Doctor/Rose Tyler, Twelfth Doctor/Rose Tyler (The Doctor/Clara Oswald, Twelfth Doctor/Clara Oswald) Chapters: 16/40 Read on AO3 here.
“‘Oh, dear. Looks like we might have picked up an extra passenger,’ the Doctor grumbled to himself. His gaze raised to Rose’s once more and she was struck by the sheer intensity of it and the way that he managed to look at once so familiar, and yet so different from what she was used to. ‘Best find something to hold on to,’ he warned her ominously.”
A Season 8 & 9 AU centering around Rose Tyler and her newly-regenerated Doctor as they both struggle to maintain their relationship in the face of some unknown force that seems to be drawing them together. Will they be able to solve the mystery of who is pulling the strings before it’s too late?
This is a direct sequel to “By Any Other Name” and might be a bit confusing if you haven’t read that first. Tags will be updated as I go.
With Rose and the Doctor both attempting to avoid their inevitable return to Coal Hill School and the many issues and questions still surrounding the mundane place, they slipped easily back into their routine of distracting themselves from the glaringly pressing matters at hand.
Still, they stayed close to Earth in an attempt to at least appear as though they weren't running from their problems, and they ended up in the middle of Bristol, where they were forced to hunt down a group of aliens from another dimension that were slowly picking people off of a council estate. The aliens' dimensional meddling also meant that the Doctor and Rose had lost the function of their time ship, and the Doctor was regrettably trapped inside of a rapidly-shrinking TARDIS.
"This is weird," Rose stated definitively as the Doctor carefully passed her his sonic screwdriver and psychic paper through the small opening that was left between them. "Wait, does this mean I'm you now?"
"No, it does not," the Doctor insisted vehemently. "So don't get any ideas!"
But it had been a while since Rose had been forced to face an alien threat alone, and with her bondmate tucked tight against her side and his thoughts humming just inside of her mind, it was difficult not to get a little into character.
You're enjoying this way too much, the Doctor reminded her pointedly as she led her new companion, Rigsy, on a search through the missing peoples' apartments.
And he is not your new companion, by the way, the Doctor continued insistently. You are not bringing him back on the TARDIS with you.
So you're going to be giving me marks, now, are you? Rose asked irritatedly. It's not the first time we've worked apart, you know. I know what I'm doing.
Just ... be careful, the Doctor replied nervously. I don't like not being able to be there with you.
Rose wordlessly reassured him that everything was going to be fine while at the same time expressing her own remorse at not being able to have the Doctor's comforting presence constantly at her side.
However, her confidence at being able to handle the situation faltered somewhat when the TARDIS's song faded into silence on a weak, defeated whimper, and she could feel the Doctor's desperation as reality began to collapse all around him. After that, it was simply a matter of Rose using their enemies' powers against them - a trick that she was proud to admit that she had learned from the Doctor over the years.
When they were finally reunited at long last, Rose could feel the dark turn to the Doctor's thoughts as he glared after the three remaining people who they had managed to save and silently counted all of the ones that they hadn't.
"You saved the whole world, Doctor," Rose reminded him quietly. "Again. It wasn't just them - it was all of us."
"I didn't do anything," the Doctor insisted begrudgingly, flashing Rose a small, humorless smile as he turned back to face her. "You did." You were brilliant, he added silently as he slowly met her gaze.
Learned from the best, Rose reminded him with a wide, satisfied smile.
No, the Doctor admonished her stubbornly. No, Rose Tyler - no one has ever had to teach you that. You've always been brilliant.
Rose could feel her heart fluttering at his words, but she rolled her eyes teasingly in his direction as she muttered wryly, Flatterer.
The Doctor responded with one of her favorite wide, boyish grins that did nothing at all to help regulate Rose's erratic pulse as he took her hand in his and led them both back into the TARDIS once more.

When the Doctor and Rose landed again, it soon became quite clear that the TARDIS was refusing to allow them to outrun their problems any longer as a young girl in a Coal Hill uniform promptly greeted them and welcomed them into an impossibly thickly-forested Trafalgar Square.
"Are you the Doctor and Miss. Oswald? I came here looking for Miss. Oswald and her Doctor. Mr. Pink told me to," the young girl declared resolutely.
"Mr. Pink?" the Doctor repeated incredulously, his eyes immediately narrowing into a suspicious glare as he glanced from the girl, to the surrounding trees, and back again.
"Are you lost, dear?" Rose asked, bending down close to the child and attempting a slightly softer approach. "Could you tell us your name?"
"I'm Maebh," the young girl replied brightly. "You are Miss. Oswald, aren't you? I thought that Mr. Pink was looking for you, but it wasn't him. It was just in my head."
"Maebh!" They all glanced up in unison when Mr. Pink himself suddenly burst through the foliage just ahead of them, a small group of children following in his wake and staring up at the TARDIS with wide, curious eyes.
"Clara?" Danny suddenly added in quiet disbelief as he immediately seemed to forget about his lost pupil and narrowed his eyes instead on Rose and the Doctor.
"Danny!" Rose greeted him as brightly as she could, though her smile felt strained as she straightened once more to face him. "What are you doing out here?"
"I could ask the same of you! Where have you been?" Danny hissed in retaliation. Rose's smile suddenly felt even more forced as she nervously noted the group of children around them whispering scandalously and the Doctor's deep, poisonous glare that he was leveling on the two of them as Danny stepped closer to her and continued agitatedly, "What happened to you, Clara? You said you'd be right back to explain, and then you just ... disappeared for weeks! We all thought that something had happened to you!"
"Sorry, Danny - really I am. Time just ... got away from me," Rose muttered lamely, unable to directly meet his eye as she awkwardly lied to him. Even if she could properly explain where she and the Doctor had disappeared to, she wasn't about to divulge any information about the date that she had shared with her husband in private, and she was too ashamed to admit that the two of them had been avoiding Danny and Coal Hill ever since.
"When are you going to stop lying to me?" Danny demanded, rolling his eyes at her and throwing his hands in the air in frustration. "Clara, we were really, really worried! We called the police and everything, but they weren't any help."
"Danny, I'm sorry," Rose repeated earnestly, meeting his gaze evenly so that he would know that she wasn't lying this time. "That's the truth. But right now, we need to figure out what's going on here, don't you think?"
She had spent over a century with the Doctor, but all of a sudden Rose was nineteen again and having to explain to her mum why she had mysteriously disappeared for an entire year with no phone call or explanation as to where she had gotten off to. Rose had thought that when she left her remaining family behind in the parallel universe that she was done with having to constantly come up with these silly explanations and excuses, but it seemed that they simply came hand-in-hand with being a part of the Doctor's life.
Danny glanced warily over Rose's shoulder and his expression darkened as his gaze landed on the Doctor, who was still glaring at the two of them from beneath those severe brows of his with a menacing scowl twisting his features. "Don't know what you two think you can do about all of this," Danny murmured under his breath, his gaze rising to glance pointedly at the thick foliage that was currently creating a thick green canopy over their heads.
"Luckily, I've got something for that," Rose replied, grinning widely as she slowly backed up towards where the Doctor was still glowering at Danny with his arms crossed tight across his chest. "Everyone, this is the Doctor," Rose announced loudly, quickly attracting the attention of the small group of children who were hovering loosely around them, "and he's going to sort everything out. Isn't that right, Doctor? It's what he does."
The Doctor finally seemed to shake himself out of his dark mood as he warily eyed the trees growing up all around them and replied matter-of-factly, "Well, having looked at things, I think, probably, the answer to that is no."
"He always says that," Rose assured the children confidently. "He's really clever."
"Doesn't look very clever, Miss ..." one of the children muttered suspiciously as they watched the Doctor begin to dart from tree to tree and start carefully inspecting the bark and branches, sometimes even reaching out and tasting them with his tongue when his hands and eyes simply weren't good enough.
"Yes, I agree," Danny piped up pointedly. "I think we should leave all of this for the professionals to deal with. Meanwhile, we need to focus on getting all of these kids home."
"Don't worry. It's a thing he does," Rose assured them all breezily, "he pretends he's not interested, and then he has an idea. He's playing for time."
"'Time' ..." the Doctor repeated thoughtfully, turning back to Rose with a wide, unfocused gaze as his thoughts ran off ahead of him and skirted across the many dangerous possibilities that lay before them. "Interesting."
"See?" Rose insisted brightly, flashing the entire group a bright, winning smile. "Clever kicking in."
However, the realization that the Doctor quickly landed on did nothing at all to reassure any of them, and they quickly discovered that they were in for far more than they had bargained for in their fight against the trees.

The Doctor and Rose stood high above her home planet and watched in silent awe as a giant ball of fire consumed the great, green orb below, harmlessly engulfing it for a few moments before it burned up and quickly dissipated back into nothingness once more.
I'm so sorry, Rose, the Doctor muttered bitterly as they watched the oceans and land masses on the planet below slowly begin to resurface through the green haze as the protective layer of foliage began to dissolve and fade away. How many times have I made you watch your planet burn?
Rose stepped forward and took his nearest hand firmly in both of her own, her fingers clenching his tightly as she quietly reminded him, "It's your planet too, Doctor." And as long as it needs saving, I plan to be there to help you.
She could feel the Doctor's thoughts flicker for just the barest fraction of a second back to Gallifrey, but he forcefully cut the thought off as he drew her close and buried his nose in her hair, drowning his concerns in the soft familiarity of her scent. He pressed a light kiss to the skin of her temple and silently filled her mind to overflowing with a deep sensation of love and gratitude.
"Do you think you'll ever try and go back?" Rose asked curiously as she continued to stare down at the tiny world that she had once called home. She didn't need to speak the name of Gallifrey out loud for the Doctor to immediately understand the point to her question. He had mentioned an interest in attempting to find his time-locked planet back before he had regenerated, but Rose had never been certain as to his true thoughts on the matter. Did he even want to go back? Could he go back? Would he ever be able to face all of the people and problems that he had buried and left behind there?
"Nah, there's a reason that I left, you know," the Doctor reminded her off-handedly, "it's terribly boring."
But their two minds were one through their telepathic bond, and Rose felt the Doctor's pain as her own as he thought back to the many terrifying possibilities that surrounded his home planet. Not only was he too ashamed of his own cowardice to attempt to return and face his problems head-on, but he was also reluctant to drag Rose back into that war and conflict that surrounded his home once more. In fact, he quite intent on keeping her as far away from Gallifrey as possible, and no amount of nostalgia or homesickness would ever be enough to make him change his mind about that.
Besides, the Doctor reminded her, pointedly steering their combined, steadily-darkening thoughts into a more cheerful direction, I already have all the home I'll ever need.
He squeezed her fingers to emphasize his point as they both took one last look at planet earth below and Rose leaned her head affectionately against his shoulder.
"We still have to go back down there, you know," Rose reminded him quietly. "We're not done yet."
"What do you mean?" the Doctor asked, confused. "Trees gone, solar flares over, Earth saved. Did I forget something?"
"Danny," Rose explained simply. "I think he's owed a few explanations, Doctor. I mean, we did just ditch him the last time. We can't do that again."
"No?" the Doctor grumbled petulantly.
"No," Rose insisted stubbornly. "Don't worry, you don't have to come. Not unless you want to, anyway. But I need to tell him goodbye, at least. I owe him that much."
I'll take you back and drop you off, the Doctor replied, sighing heavily in resignation as he led her back into the TARDIS and closed the doors behind him. But I am not going to try and explain myself to that pudding brain.
Ah, Doctor - just as humble and forgiving as ever, Rose muttered wryly as he finally dropped her hand and circled around the console before her. "Pudding brain" isn't any better than "ape", by the way, she added pointedly. Aren't we past these silly little nicknames?
Well, you certainly know how to pick them ... the Doctor responded moodily as he began flipping levers and pushing buttons to program their return journey to the earth below.
Well, I picked you didn't I? Rose reminded him pointedly.
"Oi!" the Doctor protested irritatedly, his gaze rising to glare at her from across the console. I picked you, he insisted silently.
"Whatever you say, dear," Rose murmured appeasingly. "Whatever you say."

In smoky eye makeup and a fuzzy blue bathrobe, retired pop princess Britney Spears belts Frank Sinatra lyrics into her iPhone camera and, as a result, into the broader cyber universe. “I want to be a part of it / New York, New York,” she coos in a video posted to Instagram earlier this year, punctuated by an extra helping of vibrato and a filter that not only douses the performance in a cascade of golden stars but digitally endows Spears with a pair of furry ears and the voice of a drunken baby chipmunk.
“Who doesn’t love Sinatra??” the caption reads.
“Hear, hear!” more than 1.6 million followers implied with the tap of a “like.”
Spears’ lovably erratic Ol’ Blue Eyes impression is not an anomaly. After conquering the world of pop music and enduring a paparazzi-chronicled meltdown in 2007, she has reemerged over a decade later as an unapologetic social media superuser. Her Instagram in particular, a hodgepodge of corny jokes, earnest mantras and inexplicably hypnotic selfie videos, functions like a repository of all the things that make the internet good.
Of course, I am eternally grateful for all of the sonic gems Britney Jean Spears has gifted us followers. (My first concert was Spears in her hometown of Kentwood, Louisiana; I frequently attempt the choreography to “I’m a Slave 4U” when I reach peak drunk and still tear up while listening to “Everytime.”) But when it comes to Spears’ most influential, unusual and profound cultural contribution, I have to point to her multifaceted, sincere and utterly confounding Instagram feed.
I mean it. Spears’ Instagram is rife with the kind of unfiltered millennial soul-searching that can seem overproduced or unapproachable in the hands of, say, Kim Kardashian or Beyoncé. To her 18 million Instagram subscribers, Spears is certainly still the superhuman we’ve come to love, a master of metamorphosis who’s traversed the classic phases of womanhood ― Mickey Mouse Club starlet, precious schoolgirl, snake-wielding sexpot, fame-tainted “trainwreck” and, finally, Vegas icon ― in the early-internet public eye. But now, online and selfie-savvy, Spears is also a mother, patriot, Nietzschean scholar, Christian, yogi, food critic, Hillary Clinton stan, painter, tomboy and girly girl) ― all in one constantly updated feed.
Her social media persona is so enchanting because it complicates, rather than calcifies, fans’ understanding of a star.
Spears’ ability to provoke a pure sense of bewilderment and fascination is a rare feat amid an infinite feed of influencers. In one post, she’s the basic-as-hell girl next door, posting inspirational quotes like “keep the ones that heard you when you never said a word” and milquetoast jokes like “just let me shop & no one gets hurt.” But then there are the posts that don’t fit the mold, like the minion memes, elephant pics, black-and-white images of “antique children” and trippy New Age artwork.
And of course, the true showstoppers: videos of Spears herself strutting, twirling, pouting and teasing. The clips somehow feel spontaneous, even DIY, although they’re clearly cut from many takes featuring multiple costume changes.
Therein lies the allure: Spears does little to cover up the effort behind her montages. Rejecting concerted nonchalance in favor of unapologetic effort, she showcases a sincerity so exposed it becomes vulnerability. For someone who’s been so thoroughly shaped and tormented by a greedy public, Spears’ radical openness feels especially fearless.  
I brought up my obsession with Spears’ Instagram in a recent email exchange with culture writer Mallika Rao (also a former HuffPost colleague), who’s written about the mysteries of self-representation online. Spears’ social media sagacity, she agreed, stems in part from her total disregard of self-conscious curation, which allows her to jump from posting calculus equations to providing bikini thirst traps in the blink of an eye.
“Instagram is a brand management tool, even among people branded as ‘creative’ or ‘iconoclastic,’” Rao wrote to me. “Britney does not seem to care for brand management. She uses Instagram as kids once used home videos, to work out fantasies for an imaginary viewer. Her primary beneficiary ― her perfect viewer ― seems to be herself.”
One of the most iconic of Spears’ Instagram posts, uploaded in October 2017, is a video of the multidisciplinary artist painting flowers and swirls on a canvas outside a Versailles-esque mansion I can only assume is her home. “Sometimes you just gotta play!!!!!! 🤓😜💋💅🏻👩‍🎨🎨👯👗👛👒👠🦄🦋🐠🌹💥💥” the caption says.
There are so many things to love about this video: That Mozart’s “Turkish March” is playing in the background; that Spears, perched with one leg on a stool like a flamingo, starts out wearing a men’s button-down shirt over her white pushup sports bra and workout shorts before the vid jump-cuts to an outfit change with a kimono robe; the way she purses her lips in a pensive yet flattering pout before each blessed stroke. 
Above all, Spears exhibits almost no artifice while presenting her Art to the masses. Again, it’s not that she’s not trying in her presentation, but that she’s clearly trying so hard. The evidence of her effort is written all over the post, its deliberate staging ringing truer than forced authenticity. The video, described by Glamour as “delightfully bizarre,” quickly went viral, and the Spears original painting ended up selling for $10,000. Since she was a teen, Spears has lived her life on a stage, perhaps preparing her for our post-Insta reality, in which privacy is a right we’ve all gleefully abandoned. In her book Trainwreck, Sady Doyle describes the impossible tightrope Spears was forced to walk in the prime of her fame. To avoid public scorn, she had to be “virgin and pin-up, wide-eyed innocent and worldly temptress, icon of cool and conservative Christian role model, she would always have to be both and neither, everything and nothing.”
It’s no surprise that this unimaginable pressure made Spears crumble. And as Doyle put it, her suffering became a form of entertainment, plastered across Us Weekly and TMZ. As a result, Spears’ life between 2008 and 2016 was governed by a court-approved conservatorship, meaning her father, sister and lawyer were in charge of her personal and financial decisions.
After staying out of the spotlight and rebuilding her life and self, Spears appeared on Instagram not as a symbol of desirable femininity or calamitous adulthood but as a real, weird person with interests and a sense of humor and a passion for strutting down the catwalk. For Spears, a public figure who was asked to embody the contradictory values of sanctioned womanhood from an extremely young age, this newfound freedom appears intoxicating. 
“People are obsessed with Britney’s Instagram because it offers some glimpses of hope,” critic Alicia Eler, author of The Selfie Generation wrote to HuffPost. 
As Rao put it: “We re-meet someone we thought we knew until she left in a haze of mystery,” she told me of Spears, “turning into herself and turning notions of fame on their head.”
In yet another classic Britney post, the singer stands alone in her cavernous living room wearing a little black dress and belts “I Can’t Help Falling in Love With You” using the same affected tone she’s rocked since she was a teen. No one is in the room for the performance, save for whoever is moving the camera around Spears for the full 360-degree view the video affords. Unapologetically, she got all dressed up to perform for Britney, and Britney alone.

For us non-famous normies, social media can offer a space to pretend that things worked out differently. On the platform, friends become followers, not unlike fans; documentation of the most mundane activities suddenly warrants attention and praise. We can use digital space to curate and perform the platonic versions of ourselves.
Spears, who grew up famous and in the spotlight, uses Instagram to do the opposite.

As the eldest son of the family's head, Hanzo was bound by duty to succeed his father and rule the Shimada empire. From a young age, he was trained for that responsibility, displaying a natural aptitude for leadership and possessing an innate understanding of strategy and tactics. He also excelled in more practical areas: he was a prodigy in martial arts, swordplay, and bowmanship. Upon the death of his father, the clan elders instructed Hanzo to straighten out his wayward younger brother so that he, too, might help rule the Shimada empire. When his brother refused, Hanzo was forced to kill him. This act broke Hanzo's heart and drove him to reject his father's legacy, ultimately leading him to abandon the clan and all that he had worked so hard to attain. Now, Hanzo travels the world, perfecting his skills as a warrior, attempting to restore his honor and put the ghosts of his past to rest. Once a year, he snuck into his old home, which now sends assassins to kill him for his desertion. His goal was mostly to honor the spirit of his brother. Until one day, he was assaulted in the same place by a mysterious Cyber Ninja that lectured him about his actions, or rather, his inaction towards the changing world. The lecture turned into a fierce battle and, to Hanzo's shock, the ninja revealed himself as Genji, saved from death by Overwatch. Genji forgives him, but Hanzo becomes furious after realizing that Genji's survival rendered the Redemption Quest to honor him meaningless, and calls Genji foolish to still believe in childish ideals from fairy tales. Even so, Genji's words left him conflicted about the future and his feelings for his brother. Hanzo is a Defensive character who can sneak into an enemy's holdout and silently kill them before moving on to his next target. Eschewing the favored weapons of his time, his weapon is the Storm Bow, a mechanical bow that can fire all sorts of mechanical, or mundane, arrows at enemies. He has the ability to Wall Climb, which lets him climb up a vertical surface. His first ability is Sonic Arrow. Hanzo fires at arrow at the location that releases a pulse of sound, signaling to him whether or not nearby enemies are beyond the wall or nearby. His second ability, Scatter Arrow, fires an arrow that ricochets off walls and objects, enabling him to strike at angles and hit multiple targets. His ultimate, Dragonstrike, takes off the guise of stealth and summons a pair of Spirit Dragons that travel forward from his location, killing any enemies in its path. Animal Motifs: Besides the obvious dragon, Hanzo has several Legendary skins that give him a wolf-based look instead; he wears wolf pelts on his head and shoulders, and his ultimate ability replaces the Spirit Dragons with howling wolves. On a symbolic level, dragons in some Asian cultures represent prosperity, strength, and good fortune and are typically benevolent creatures, but because the dragon is the family icon of the Shimada clan's criminal empire, the Western depiction of dragons being creatures of evil applies as well. Wolves, on the other hand, represent freedom as well as family and community, but they also symbolize a lack of trust in others and/or yourself - despite having had broken away from his family after nearly killing Genji, Hanzo still feels a lingering sense of loyalty and duty, and much of his inner conflict stems from his choice of either following his clan's footsteps or forgive himself and pursue the heroic path like Genji did. The Atoner: He seeks to regain his honor for both killing his brother and for being a part of a criminal clan that would force him to do such a thing. Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: He's quite cocky and contemptuous towards his enemies, and openly gloats about his skills in combat. Awesome Anachronistic Apparel: His outfit is based on feudal Japanese ninja clothing with modern touches such as futuristic boots and a waist pack. Doesn't stop it from looking awesome. Badass Beard: He has a small one along with a Badass Mustache. Badass Boast: Gives one to Genji in Dragons, mistaking him for an assassin: Hanzo: You are not the first assassin sent to kill me. And you will not be the last. Beard of Sorrow: The mustache and small beard he has now? He didn't start growing it until after he was forced to kill his younger brother Genji. Becoming the Costume: Hanzo's Okami and Lone Wolf skins change a large number of lines, replacing his dragon motif with a wolf one. For example, when launching his Sonic Arrow, instead of saying "Marked by the dragon," he'll say "The wolf marks its prey." His Ultimate line changes from "Let the dragon consume you!"/"Ryū ga waga teki o kurau!" to "The wolf hunts for his prey!"/"Ōkami yo, waga teki o kurae!" Additionally, the projectile itself becomes two wolves instead of dragons, changing the roar sound to howling, and if it gets any kills, Hanzo says "The wolf is sated" instead of "The dragon is sated." Berserk Button: Genji. As if being forced to kill him wasn't enough to leave Hanzo a remorseful wreck, he now finds out that his brother is alive and well and is willing to forgive him for an act that caused him to abandon his family and spend his entire life on an ultimately-pointless redemption quest for something he began to view as irredeemable. Mentioning Genji or bringing up the fact that the two are similar will result in Hanzo furiously and spitefully denying him. Bottomless Magazines: While played straight in the game itself, in the animated short "Dragons" he runs out of arrows during his fight with Genji and has to pick them up from where he fired them. Bring It: One of his taunts is a classic "Come and get me" gesture. Cain and Abel: After their father's death, tensions rose between him and his brother Genji until he was forced by the clan elders to kill him. Even after his brother shows up alive again, Hanzo has very conflicted feelings about him, despite Genji forgiving him. Genji: "It is not too late to change your course, brother." Hanzo: "You may call yourself my brother, but you are not the Genji I knew." Charged Attack: His Storm Bow is Hold-type; simply tapping the fire button fires a very weak arrow, but holding it down for full power allows it to One-Hit Kill non-tanks with a headshot. Dark is Not Evil: Despite wearing mostly black, having an evil looking scowl most of the time, and is not the White Sheep of his criminal empire family, he's far from evil himself; having performed a Heel–Face Turn after (almost) murdering Genji. Death Seeker: Implied: he tells Genji to kill him in Dragons and Genji replies that he will not grant him the death he wishes for. There's also his Halloween "R.I.P." victory pose, where unlike everybody else who is bursting from out of their graves, Hanzo seems perfectly content staying put.◊ Decomposite Character: He and his brother were originally one cyber ninja in concept. The character however was too unfocused in design due to being crammed with too many ninja weapons and gimmicks. Rather than scrap the idea though, the character was made into two brothers. Hanzo inherited the clothes, bow usage, and name the original character had. Defector from Decadence: He left his family and the criminal empire he could have ruled since it cost him his brother. Downplayed as a few of his quotes imply he regret having left the Yakuza lifestyle. Difficult but Awesome: He's rated 3 stars for a reason. He's difficult in that his arrows require draw time and are projectiles instead of hitscan-based which also avert No "Arc" in "Archery", meaning actually hitting a target requires consistent aim and prediction, not helped by the lack of a scope making it more difficult to aim precisely. His kit is entirely based around dealing burst damage and getting picks, and if he fails to do so, he might be considered The Millstone by his team. His Dragonstrike ultimate is also difficult to use effectively, as while it has huge damage and AoE, it's a Painfully Slow Projectile that can be easily avoided through experience, meaning you'll have to get crafty to use it properly. He's awesome in that his arrows' lack of a scope prevents him from suffering tunnel vision, he requires virtually no reloading, he has one of the only abilities in the game that can provide team-wide vision, and his potential mid-to-long-range damage output is absolutely absurd. A well-trained Hanzo can easily shut down enemy teams before they can touch the objective. Don't You Dare Pity Me!: In every interaction where Genji shows Hanzo sympathy or tries to give him a speech, Hanzo lashes out and insults Genji. Drowning My Sorrows: The Halloween update reveals his canteen is always full of sake. And it's one of the biggest canteens among the cast members who have them. Presumably it's to dull the constant guilt and regret he feels. Due to the Dead: It's revealed in "Dragons" that every year he returns to Hanamura, his former home, to pay tribute to his dead younger brother Genji. Until he learns Genji is not dead as previously thought. The Dutiful Son: While he has renounced his family ties after being forced to kill Genji, pre-match dialogue implies that he on some level regrets his decision and wants to make his family great again, yet it is implied that he has some clear standards on how to do it, such as when he turns down Widowmaker's offer to join Talon in exchange for his family's restoration. And part of the reason why Hanzo resents Genji is because of the latter's refusal to toe the line, resulting in their fated battle and causing everything to fall apart. And now that brother is revealed to be still alive, all of that grief and the journey to atone for his sins had been completely for nothing. Fingerless Gloves: Of a sort. He wears a special archery glove note on his right hand that covers everything except his ring finger and pinky. Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The dutiful, responsible older brother of the foolish, hedonistic Genji, back when both of them were living in Hanamura and their scuffle that led to Genji's cybernetic transformation didn't happen yet. Glass Cannon: Can deal high damage with his arrows and ultimate ability, however, he has mediocre health and no mobility-boosting abilities other than wall-climbing. Gameplay and Story Segregation: In-game, Hanzo can only shoot his arrows straight, even if they will eventually fall to gravity. In the Dragons animated short, his arrows can make a sideway arc, shoot to the side, and the arrow takes a turn to straight in front of Hanzo. Hazy Feel Turn: Hanzo did not leave the life of a criminal behind, seeing as he still carries out assassinations. He did, however, leave the Shimada clan behind, and, even if he express regret at doing it, refuses to associate with outright villainous groups like Talon. Heroic B.S.O.D.: Upon learning in the end of "Dragons" that Genji is still alive (albeit as a cyborg) and has forgiven him for nearly killing him on the orders of their clan elders, Hanzo's response is to continue burning incense as tribute to his brother like nothing happened as if he's in complete denial. It's suggested that his hostile banter with Genji during gameplay may have stemmed from this. Heroes Prefer Swords: Averted. He was trained in the use of one, but after he was forced to kill Genji, he swore never to pick up another blade, instead using a bow and arrow. Hitbox Dissonance: The Hero. Hanzo's arrow hitbox is roughly twice as wide as the actual character model, and just hitting in the upper portion of that giant hitbox counts as a headshot. I Did What I Had to Do: He considers his act of killing Genji as something he had to do in order to placate his clan's elders and restore order to his already broken family, but it's clear that he deeply regrets it. Important Haircut: He used to have much longer hair in his twenties, and in "Reflections" (which takes place after "Dragons") he sports an undercut. Improbable Aiming Skills: A good chunk of what he does with his arrows in "Dragons", most notably the part where he shoots an arrow which curves to hit and destroy a cellphone when a) he's grappling someone at the same time, b) the cellphone is moving and c) from where he shoots, Hanzo couldn't possibly see the point where his arrow lands. Improbable Use of a Weapon: He's shown to be quite versatile with his bow in "Dragons," using it as a melee weapon in several instances. In fact, in his fight against Genji, he actually finds more success this way than through firing arrows. Instant Awesome, Just Add Dragons: His ultimate summons two Spirit Dragons that go through walls and kills everything in their path. Jerkass Façade: Usually his default persona is The Atoner. But, he's usually very nasty to Genji even after what he did, for ill-defined reasons. Mage Marksman: Uses Trick Arrows to fight, and then there's the whole "shooting out two spirit dragons" thing. Master Swordsman: Word of God says he's actually a master swordsman who's probably even better than his brother. However because of what happened with Genji, Hanzo put down the sword for good and picked up the bow instead. His old sword can still be found displayed in the Hanamura dojo with a chipped blade. Meaningful Name: His name alludes to Hattori Hanzo, one of the most famous Real Life samurai.* Mr. Fanservice: Half-shirtless, with a very extensive dragon tattoo. My God, What Have I Done?: Seemingly killing his brother Genji broke his heart and caused him to leave the clan to atone for what he had done. My Greatest Failure: The day he was forced to kill his little brother by his clan's elders was this for Hanzo. It's one of the main reasons he became The Atoner. Nice Job Fixing It, Villain!: When he (apparently) murdered his own brother to appease the clan elders and prevent the families dissolution, he instead accidentally turned Genji into the hero who would single-handedly dismantle the clan and leave it a pale husk of its former self. Ninja: Since the Shimada Clan was a family of ninjas before becoming Yakuza, Hanzo was trained as a ninja himself. Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: His Halloween skin basically makes him into a Zombie Ninja. No "Arc" in "Archery": Averted! Unlike every other primary weapon in the game other than Torbjörn's, all of Hanzo's arrows are affected by gravity, including those spawning from his Scatter Arrow. Judging how to aim at a distance based on this arc is one of the reasons aiming with him can be quite tough. Not So Different: From Genji, at least in the eyes of Zenyatta. Zenyatta: I sense within you the same rage that once consumed your brother. Hanzo: We are nothing alike! Not So Stoic: His in-game lines are pretty chill and monotonous, but mentioning his younger brother (as seen in the "Dragons" short) makes him rash and angry. Perpetual Frowner: With good reason, admittedly. Pinball Projectile: Scatter Arrow causes Hanzo's arrow to explode into several more upon hitting a surface, each of which retain a normal arrow's general damage. An easy strategy for taking out squishy targets is to aim one right at their feet, so multiple arrows explode from under them. Or just have some really, really lucky geometry working for you. Power Tattoo: In the animated short "Dragons", his dragon tattoo glows as he unleashes his Dragonstrike. In fact the spirit dragons seem to appear from the tattoo before being unleashed through the arrow he fires. Redemption Rejection: Self-invoked example. He simply won't forgive himself for what he did to Genji and refused to redeem himself with Overwatch even after Genji explicitly forgave him with a You Are Better Than You Think You Are speech at the end of "Dragons". Sibling Rivalry: Despite wishing to atone for nearly killing Genji, Hanzo still prides himself on honor and looks down upon his brother for his hedonistic lifestyle even after he had become a cyborg and mellowed out. This conversation before a match begins says it all. Hanzo: You will never amount to anything! Genji: We shall see...brother. Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: To Genji in Dragons: Hanzo: Real life is not like the stories our father told us! You are a fool for believing it so! Summon Magic: He summons two giant spirit dragons to kill anything in their path. No explanation for this magic is offered, except that only a Shimada can control these dragons. Tattooed Crook: Has a dragon tattoo on his left arm and was formerly the heir of a powerful Yakuza clan. The Straight and Arrow Path: In a world with guns and rockets and robot suits and teleporters, Hanzo uses a humble bow. A technologically enhanced bow, but a bow nonetheless. Thicker Than Water: Hanzo is a firm believer of traditional family loyalty and that honor lies in family loyalty, which was why he's The Dutiful Son who didn't seem to mind much about how the criminal activities of the clan are not good deeds, they're still his family, and while he left the clan in shame, he still held some regrets that he somehow wanted to return to his family. This is also why he's rather cross at Genji for his actions to shut down the Shimada clan, he cannot see honor in betraying one's own family even if it was for the greater good or common morality. Trademark Favorite Food: Ramen, just like his brother. Thankfully for Hanzo, he's still able to enjoy it as he's still full human. Trick Arrow: His Scatter Shot explodes when it hits a wall, releasing ricocheting arrows that bounce off walls and hit foes. He also has Sonic Arrow, which alerts him to nearby enemies. Additionally, in Dragons his normal arrows are apparently electric and homing. Walking Shirtless Scene: He wears a kimono, but the left side is not on his body, showing off his left pec, left side of his torso, and an impressive arm-length dragon tattoo. Wall Crawl: Thanks to his Wall Climb ability. White Sheep: Became this to his clan after he defected out of guilt for killing his little brother on the clan elders' orders. Yakuza: Former heir to the Shimada Clan's criminal empire and still has the tattoo to prove it.
