Book 2, Chapter 14 (Part 2)

They return to the courtyard house.

“Did you think we’re going on a leisure trip?” Wu Du says to him, frowning.

“I want to stay with you.” Duan Ling says without missing a beat, “If it’s not at your side, I’m not going anywhere.”

One sentence and Duan Ling has left Wu Du speechless. Next thing he’s covering his forehead with a hand and waving the other as he heads inside without a word.

Duan Ling stares at Wu Du’s back with a curious look on his face. Wu Du doesn’t even know what to say to him anymore.

“Don’t you want to get ahead?” Wu Du sounds dumbfounded. “You have such a good opportunity being a study partner for the young master, and instead of treasuring that, you‘re choosing to run off to Tongguan at a time like this. Whatever are you trying to do?”

“I … This is one way a person can get ahead, you know.”

Wu Du keeps getting the feeling that Duan Ling is keeping something from him, and now sitting in the room he considers Duan Ling with a puzzled look as though there’s something unusual surging just beneath the surface, the shape of it barely discernible, as if there’s a layer of chiffon in the way.

“What on earth are you hiding from me?” Wu Du asks.

All this time, he’s had this feeling that something isn’t right, but he can’t quite put his finger on it. This is the closest he’s ever been to the truth.

In that precise moment, Duan Ling has a sudden impulse to say it, and very nearly blurts it out.

“I want to go find my dad.” In the end that’s the excuse Duan Ling uses.

Wu Du gets it then. The tight furrow between his brows relaxing a smidgen as he gives Duan Ling a nod.

“The last time I saw him was outside Tongguan. Even though I don’t think I can find him anymore … I still want to at least try looking.”

“Then when we’re out you have to listen to me. You cannot act on your own.”

Duan Ling nods, agreeing, and that seems to calm Wu Du. He tells Duan Ling, “Go pack for our trip.”

Duan Ling starts packing their rudimentary luggage while thinking to himself that he’s dodged another arrow again. As soon as he gets away from here, then it’s the literal meaning of the common saying: the sky is high and the emperor lives far away;2 no matter how much Lang Junxia may want to kill him he won’t be able to find him. As for what happens when he gets back, well, that’s something to worry about for later.

But Wu Du is staring at Duan Ling as he packs, not taking his eyes off of him. Suddenly, he says, “But no matter what you end up finding, you mustn’t try to kill yourself again, got it?”

Duan Ling turns around, smiling at Wu Du. “I won’t do that again. With you around, I’ll definitely stay alive.”

Under Duan Ling’s care, amidst the courtyard house’s garden, many splendid flowers are blooming brilliantly, a backdrop as colourful as a painting; the picture of a young man turning with a smile on his face has startled Wu Du out of the blue without rhyme or reason at all.

In the afternoon, more gifts arrive. This time it’s clothes for the trip made with first-rate fabric, as well as money they’ll need for spending on the road; there’s even a dagger for Duan Ling for self-defence.

When it’s night time, Wu Du and Duan Ling plan out their itinerary. This is the first time Duan Ling has ever formally embarked on a long journey, so he’s actually rather excited.

“Make sure you don’t talk too much while we’re out. If nothing goes wrong I’ll disguise myself as your servant. A young master doesn’t need to do everything himself.”

Duan Ling just nods, and in the end he asks, “What’s the Zhenshanhe?”

This is clearly a question he knows the answer to; as soon as he heard that the sword of the realm had gone missing, he knew that the sword had been gone since the day Shangjing fell. If they can recover the Zhenshanhe, does that mean they can direct the four assassins?

“A weapon that stabilises the empire. The crown prince is looking for it as well.”

“Is it in Bian Lingbai’s keeping?” Duan Ling asks.

“Not necessarily. But he was among the last of the reinforcements to arrive in Shangjing.”

Duan Ling suspects that it is more likely to have fallen into Mongol or Khitan hands, but since its whereabouts are unknown, they may as well see if they can find it while they’re there.

They discuss for a time in the evening, and as they’re about to go to bed, Mu Kuangda summons them to a meeting. When they get to the study it is a private meeting as before, and Mu Kuangda hands the two their mission.

“Chang Pin is in Jiangzhou, so it’s too late to ask him for a plan. I improvised something with what little time I have, and I’m not sure if it’s entirely advisable; he’s usually the one who’d come up with ideas for something like this. We’ll talk about it together, and if anything feels amiss, either of you can tell me.”

Then Mu Kuangda explains to Duan Ling and Wu Du that the general plan is nothing more than to first win Bian Lingbai’s trust by passing Duan Ling off as Zhao Kui’s nephew. He’ll express his wish to convene Zhao Kui’s former subordinates, to claim some territory and set himself up as a local lord so he can take revenge for his uncle. This way, Wu Du won’t have to put on a disguise, making it less likely to give the game away.

As for Duan Ling, his mission is to gain Bian Lingbai’s trust first, then probe for information, try to find some way to steal some correspondence between Bian Lingbai and Xiliang. On the one hand the letters can act as evidence that they can present to the emperor after they kill Bian Lingbai, and on the other hand, Mu Kuangda needs to know what Bian Lingbai is planning.

After all, there are many beneficial relationships between the Tangut tribe and the empire of Chen. Xiliang used to be an independent state, then it was annexed by Liao, and its allegiance has always wavered between Liao and Chen. If all goes as planned, Mu Kuangda intends to find some way to gain Xiliang’s support.

There are factions within Xiliang as well; ever since Helian Bo and his mother returned to their homeland, their government has been split into two factions, one advocating the Helian family leaving Liao control and gaining independence, while another believes it is best for them to bide their time.

All of this is giving Duan Ling a bit of a headache. He had recommended himself3 in order to survive, but now that he thinks about it, he’s going to have to install himself with a general he’s never met, and it’s one at the commander-in-chief level too — it won’t be easy to fool him. While he hasn’t been found out at the Mu estate, he’s never had to explain his origins in front of Mu Kuangda, and the identity he made up has been quite limited. In front of Bian Lingbai he’ll have to fabricate an entire set of lies. What he has done so far cannot hold a candle to what he must do on this trip.

“I just worry that I won’t be able to gain his trust and things will easily go wrong,” Duan Ling says.

“That doesn’t matter.” Mu Kuangda smiles, looking fully like a cunning old fox. “We have something in exchange that will give him no other option but to meet with you.”

Speaking, he hands over a tiny wooden box. Duan Ling opens it to find a rolled up silk tapestry, yellowed with age and drawn with mountains, rivers, and general terrain.

Duan Ling stares at it in amazement.

Mu Kuangda says, “This is a treasure map taken from Zhao Kui’s storage when his property was confiscated by the government.”

Duan Ling is staring with his mouth agape at the treasure map. It’s thin as a cicada’s wing, every last line distinct.

“Bian Lingbai has been hankering after it for a long time, but he’s been unable to find it through all his searching after Zhao Kui’s properties were confiscated; even His Majesty himself knows not of its whereabouts. I had foreseen the need for this plan a long time ago, and thus I have been hiding it. And I also have a letter forged in Zhao Kui’s handwriting ostensibly written prior to his death that you can take with you.”

Duan Ling looks over the treasure map carefully. “What’s buried here?”

“Gold, silver, treasure — enough money to rival the imperial treasury.” Mu Kuangda drinks his tea without any sign of nervousness. “Presumably Zhao Kui made contingency plans while he was planning his coup, and if the coup failed he would have unearthed the treasure and ran away, find some small place in Xiyu where he could keep a private army of a hundred thousand or so, and became the ruler of a small state. It would have made an acceptable living.”

Duan Ling has no more misgivings, and he puts the treasure map away. Mu Kuangda then warns him once more, “Of course, Bian Lingbai isn’t going to trust you. And with just yourself you’re not going to be able to get to the core of his secrets; he’s tremendously ambitious. However, with these terms on your side, it won’t be hard for you to infiltrate his army along with Wu Du.”

In an instant, Duan Ling comprehends his intentions; neither his identity nor the treasure map are significant at all. All he has to do is to buy time for Wu Du.

“I understand. I definitely won’t fail.”

Satisfied, Mu Kuangda nods. “Then, Wu Du, you’ll have to act as our gentleman thief.”

“I got it,” Wu Du replies.

“First, steal the classified information. If it’s possible, steal both his ledgers and letters. As for the value of each piece of information, you two must figure it out amongst yourselves what to take and what mustn’t be touched. Get rid of him before you leave. Only once we have evidence can we arrange negotiations with Xiliang. Bian Lingbai has always wanted to turn against the central government, and after Zhao Ku died no one could keep him in check. The longer we allow him to live the more things can go awry. We must resolve this as soon as possible.”

Wu Du gives him a nod, knowing that once he finishes this job Mu Kuangda definitely won’t treat him lightly, which precisely fulfils the way to “get ahead” that Duan Ling mentioned. But getting ahead isn’t going to be easy; this is the first assassination he has been tasked with since he came under Mu Kuangda’s patronage, and it is also a blood pledge — but he has already run out of other options.4

“What if he’s innocent?” Duan Ling asks suddenly .

A look of alarm flashes across Wu Du’s face.

Mu Kuangda though, has started smiling, staring right at Duan Ling.

Duan Ling knows full well that this is the one question he should never ask, but he asked it anyway.

“Very good.” Mu Kuangda nods slowly. “If he’s innocent, will you or will you not kill him?”

To his surprise, Mu Kuangda has kicked the ball right back into Duan Ling’s court, with a shrewd, calculating look in his eyes.

Duan Ling takes a deep breath, about to answer, but then Mu Kuangda is telling him, full of poise, “If he’s innocent, then you may do as you see fit.”

“Certainly,” Duan Ling feels a great weight coming off his chest.

Mu Kuangda does not move his eyes from Duan Ling, as though he wants to see right through into his heart.

“Come back as soon as possible,” Mu Kuangda adds, “The exams will happen right after the capital is relocated. You mustn’t neglect your studies.”

Duan Ling rises with Wu Du, and they take their leave.

On the way back, the more Duan Ling thinks about the meeting the more he appreciates Mu Kuangda’s meticulous planning, how he has taken every possibility into account. At the end of it he even emphasised several times that they must create the illusion that Bian Lingbai passed away from natural causes. For that is the only way the imperial court can assign a general to take over the army stationed beneath Tongguan, stopping the chance of further turmoil.

“Even if he is innocent we’ll still have to kill him,” Wu Du says quietly.

“I know. But you won’t, will you? I won’t either. There aren’t that many generals who’re capable of safeguarding the border. As long as he doesn’t turn against the empire, then he should not be killed indiscriminately.”

At the end of which he closes the gates of the courtyard house behind him, and once they’re back inside the house, he says to Wu Du in a barely audible whisper, “I only said that to give him pause. And if we don’t find anything, then you don’t have to make this blood pledge anymore. Killing good and loyal men is going to end up costing no one but you in the end.”

With a deep furrow between his brows, Wu Du turns his gaze onto Duan Ling, and it just so happens that Duan Ling was also watching him. There is a shared understanding in their gaze that cannot be put into words.

“Get some sleep.” Wu Du says, “We’ll have to be on our way in the morning. Don’t think about this anymore.”

Duan Ling goes to his floor bedding, but that’s when Wu Du says to him, “Come sleep on my bed. It’s been raining for days. The floor’s too damp.”

Duan Ling doesn’t bother being polite either, and just climbs up to the bed to sleep, while Wu Du sits in front of the desk, looking at the treasure map by the dim light of a lantern.

Half way through the night Duan Ling wakes up once and says to Wu Du, “Not going to sleep yet?”

Wu Du hums something in reply. He has the treasure map pinched between two fingers, and turning the silk tapestry backwards and forwards, he looks at it through the lamplight. It’s quite a while before he gets on the bed with all his clothes on, lying down next to Duan Ling, and gets under the same covers.

Duan Ling is all muddled in his sleep. Turning over, he throws a leg over Wu Du’s waist and clasps his arms around him, and subconsciously lean against him, putting his head on Wu Du’s arm, wrapping nearly his entire body around Wu Du.

Wu Du is at quite a loss; he can’t exactly push him away, and it’s even weirder if he holds onto him. Being embraced by a young man this way gives him a peculiar feeling, and he’s all at once frozen in place.

The sky is high and the emperor is far away is a common saying, as in “far away from the central government, the local magistrates can embezzle as they like” basically. ↩︎

The words for a blood pledge is more like a “contract”, but it means an act that ensures your loyalty. It originates in Water Margin, where Lin Chong was asked to kill someone and bring back their head in order to join the gang on Mount Liang. I translate this generally to blood pledge, since it is a pledge in which you get blood on your hands. ↩︎

The Future* President's Fiancee (End)

Later that day, the news media was reporting about the major news that happened.

"...... The An family, a prestigious family that has been passed down for thousands of years, exploded a feud today within the powerful family. The fourth son of the first branch of the An family, in order to seize the position of the An family patriarch, cruelly poisoned his own father and three brothers, and finally even drove a flying car into his own sister, An Mu Lan, causing her to be in a coma in the Zhongzheng Intensive Care Unit, and it is said that there is a great possibility that she will not be able to wake up and become a vegetable. Seven days later, the news media reported,

Three months later, the news media reported,

“…..All the members of the Zhang family pillar were sentenced to life imprisonment, and the Zhang family disappeared from the stage of history….. Zhang Yao, the head of the Zhang family, was found by a tourist in the wilderness with her arms and legs severed and her tongue pulled out by the roots. Six months later, the news media reported,

“…..President Ling, who has been in the limelight in recent years, has successfully saved the dying company with her outstanding management skills after precisely acquiring the Zhang family, and has ranked first in the statistical results of this year's wealth list, with a personal fortune that rivals that of any other country.”

“…..President Ling was officially elected to this year's government congress as an outstanding entrepreneur. This move represents that after making a name for herself in the business world, President Ling has turned her attention to politics and has been elected as a government official, making a high-profile entry into the political arena, and is very close to the head of the Li family, a giant in the political world.”

“…..Yesterday afternoon, President Ling was photographed by Entertainment Network reporters as she walked in and out of the hotel with Miss Li, daughter of the political family, and late last night, the two were seen walking out of the hotel hand in hand, however, the two parties involved denied this fact one after another when interviewed by the media.”

A year later, the news media reported,

“…..The President of the Ling Company, Ling Xihan, has become the number one marriage partner in the world. With her wealth and status as a rising political star, many men and women are attracted to her, and her fiancée, Miss An Mu Lan, has now become a vegetable and there is no telling when she will wake up.”

“…..Miss Ling Xihan confessed her love for her fiancée, promising to wait for her until the day she wakes up, and said straight out: An Mu Lan will be my only fiancée, my only wife! This act of infatuation has touched everyone and made more people in the community witness the beauty of true love.”

An Economist talks about social reality in this matter,

“President Ling played a good hand this time, ah, she confessed to her fiancée Miss An, showing her true feelings and making other partners more comfortable to work with her, which increased the performance of Ling's company, making it leap into the future world's strongest economic hegemon in half a month's time. This wealth has helped her open the door to the political world, making her a rising star, a good plan, we admire it.”

Rumour has it that the economist disappeared without a trace on the second day.

The noise died down and a cold, mechanical voice rang out in the back of her head, saying in a monotone voice:

【Host Mu Lan's order to leave the mission world at regular intervals is lifted, prepare to restart the virtual time and space system;】

【Restart countdown: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1;】

【The restart was successful, welcome host Mu Lan back to the mission world.】

The words fell to the surface and the woman, lying in her sick**, slowly opened her eyes.

An Mu Lan felt her eyes dry and she closed them again as her own voice rang out in her head, saying,

【Host Mu Lan requests the system to redeem 50 points in exchange for good health】

【50 points have been successfully redeemed and the system is repairing the host's physical body;】

【"Ding", the system repair is complete, good luck to the host for completing the raid long ago.】

An Mu Lan felt her body recover in a flash, she opened her eyes, pulled the corners of her mouth, then sat up and picked up her personal terminal that was sitting on the edge of her hospital bed, clicking on the top contact, a familiar figure then appeared on the screen and she said with a crooked smile,

"My dear fiancée, long time no see?"

“…..”

The person on the other end smiled deeply and she murmured with curled lips,

"It's been a long time!"

After hanging up, An Mu Lan walked out of bed and pulled back the heavy curtains as she leaned against the window and looked out at the vivid and lively scenery.

Although she had been in a coma for almost a year, in fact, she had just jumped straight from a year ago to the present, and she was sick**, when she received the hospital treatment, a timed disengagement procedure was set up autonomously to await today's awakening.

It was all a bitter plan, and she knew that if she took her time with Ling Xihan, there was a good chance that her mission would not be completed, so, in order to get Ling Xihan to take that step, she chose this layout.

She had been trying to provoke Zhang Yao in the An family by acting close to Ling Xihan and saying "I love you" to her in front of everyone, this should have irritated Zhang Yao the most. She saw a flash of white light then and knew her chance had come.

She also didn't really pass out after being hit by the flying car, but chose to become a vegetable for a year after considering it at her discretion. She went out on a limb, hoping that this time the layout would give her a good result.

A month later, in the world of the future, a grand and luxurious wedding took place in the most beautiful and romantic sky garden.

After An Mu Lan woke up, Ling Xihan had been protecting her as if she were her most precious possession, unwilling to let her out of her sight for even a second.

The wedding, which had been delayed for a year, had been prepared by Ling Xihan long before everything was ready.

By the time An Mu Lan had changed into her white wedding dress and walked onto the red carpet, she saw the tall woman at the end of the carpet, now wearing a red and fiery polar-fitting gown, like a blazing flame in the sun, it radiates a heat that can burn a person completely.

An Mu Lan smiled brightly and walked slowly but firmly towards Ling Xihan.

Facing the priest who officiated the ceremony, they exchanged rings and kissed in front of the guests, before An Mu Lan smiled and said,

"Thank you for waiting for me being a belated bride."

Lingshihan looked at her with an expression on her face that had never been softer and warmer, and she said with a light smile,

"And you will show me that it was worth all the waiting. My wife, I love you."

A familiar emotionless mechanical voice rings out in her head,

【Mission accomplished ......】

An Mu Lan blinked back tears, her eyebrows slightly arched and the two dimples at the corners of her mouth deep, just as she had been at first sight. She wrapped her arms around Ling Xihan's neck and kissed her, and in this intimate position, whispered,

"I love you too, Ling Xihan."

Got up 5 20/.. Went to bed 10 50/..

Off from the hotel d’Öresund, 13 Rigsgelds, Elsinaur at 2 5/.. in an open boat with the carriage (too large for it) fore wheels over the side.

Beautiful day – hot sun – water quite smooth – scarce a breath of air to inflate our sail – one man at the oar – landed on the pier at Helsingborg at 3 35/.. (5 miles across) – would not wait for the little passengers-boat at 4 p.m. because would not leave our carriage – Adney afraid at first

Helsingborg picturesque little town, brick and painted wood houses – long pother about duty 10 per cent on value of carriage – not knowing of this having to be paid and not being provided – Gross sure the man (on landing) from the wrong Inn was the right – he left with the carriage we got to the wrong place – soon found that out thro’ a Frenchman told us it was the best Inn in the town, Hotel M’olberg or some such name, the diligence starting from there –

Hotel Munthe was built 1799 and demolished 1916 and a famous establishment.

Found Munthe and luckily the right one for are 2 of this name and both have about equally good looking houses, ours nearest the harbour nearly at the bottom of the Grande Place and the other at the top – lucky our landlord speaks English well and got us well thro’ all pother and gave us a large clean airy room and good dinner –

Much obliged to Löbel – Munthe bought us harness and saddle = about 50 Dollar Banco and paid duty for carriage valued at 500 Dollar Banco = 50 Banco and trinkkeld (and valuing 2 Banco) = 5 Banco more and our bill 8 Banco and gave the servants at his suggestion 2 Banco for all trouble about baggage etc – Munthe also hired us a Swedish coach man and sent off forebud and did all and was giving me 10 Banco per Sovereign for 15 Sovereigns –

All this and counting out sovereigns etc etc took till after 6, Adney and I then strolled out first to the little harbour and neat new bathing establishment and then to the borg thro’ the picturesque little town – up the hill which is now all around the castle covered with corn potatoes etc –

The master of the Danish boat (little neat benched open sailing boat we should have come in at 4 in less then one hour) a nice civil Dane, speaking a little English happened to be there and fetched a man to open the huge old iron padlock –

Some rain in the night, but fine in the morning F 72° at 6 ½ a.m. had dressed and written out all but the first 7 lines of Thursday and the whole of yesterday now at 9 35/.. –

On coming in last night, sent Mr Heunebert’s letter to his son or son-in-law ‘Consul Löbel Esquire à Elsineur’ Danish consul here who would come and advise and help us etc. if necessary – sent word by our laquais that I had not time to write but should be glad to see him this morning and should be ready at 9 – we do as well without people’s help as with it? tell us a good hotel and we not trouble people further –

I had just written so far when Mr Löbel was ushered in – a good sort of civil obliging good-countenanced man apparently about (or not quite) 40 – intelligent – pleased with him – our consul Mr McGregor came here from Teneriffe and perhaps said Löbel might not know so well how to help us – recommended us to go Chez Mu[n]the at Helsinborg who spoke English and would help us better than anyone else there – would give me a letter to him – would see about the boat to take us over – and would return –

Breakfast at 10 – Löbel returned before we had finished breakfast – all ordered about the boat – and gave me the letter – he is in the house of Farwick and company – they do business on commission – no good map of Sweden to be had at Elsineur –

Sent for our valet Peter Cronevall to pay him – to give him what I pleased – No! he must name a charge – pother – sent for Mrs Briggs – she whispered 2 or 3 shillings – then asked her to get me change for a species dollars = 2 dollars pother – long while – by shillings I of course understood Danish silver marks – she then said give him a dollar – the hotel bill very fair – but we do not now much like Mrs Briggs a Dane – would not give the valet more than 4 marks –

Just before leaving the house letter from Mr Parker forwarded from Hamburg to Messrs Frolich Copenhagen and by them to their agent here – left a dollar for the servants and off at last from the Hotel d’Oresund (Briggs) at Elsineur and on board and pushed off out of the little harbour at 2 5/.. –

Gross had foolishly come at one to say the carriage hung over the side of the boat and he thought we had better go by the passage b[oa]t at 2 – No! No! I would first look at our boat – the passage boat would not be off before 4 or 5 –

Adney frightened – but our boat clean and good (open boat) and seeing me determined to go with our baggage Adney stept in with me and was afterwards well satisfied – the water quite smooth – scarce a breath of wind to fill our sail therefore one oar to help us and still the about 5 English miles across took us 1 ½ hour –

Left Gross to pother with the carriage – wrong Inn – how odd to me to find with and without tongue! not one word could we understand or make understood – save in broken German – got to the right Munthe (for there is another higher up in the same square) and a good room – but now the use of Löbel’s letter – I had silently wondered at a letter to mine host – equipage and servants all nothing to the letter – he was very civil – would do all for us at the custom house etc. – advised us – but when he found us so poor in Swedish money well! but Löbel had said nothing to him about furnishing us with money – duty on the carriage would cost more than all I had – then there was harness and posting etc. had we not had English and other gold we must have waited for money from Copenhagen! at last all settled by a little after 6 and we were out from 6 20/.. to 7 1/2 –

Nice little town – strolled up to the borg, high square brick tower or castle – very interesting interior – ground floor and donjon keep (hole) below and 4 stories above, each having small chambers in the thickness of the walls (3 or 4 in each story) reminding me of Macbeth’s castle – the premier boarded over heavyish joists – the other floors and the top brick-arched – very fine view from the top, grown over with grass and blue burdock and a sort of hellebore very common hereabouts – counted above a hundred sail of vessels – beautiful evening – Elsineur seems quite near its Kronborg presenting an oblong front –

Dinner immediately on our return (straight down thro’ a garden and private house) at 7 ½ – very much better than we expected – the cheese excellent – kept it and the remainder of our bread and butter for tomorrow – the long sofa had been turned into 2 comfortable small beds – very fine hot day –

As the slope rises slightly to the west, it was possible to meet the provisions of the plan with the height relative to the surrounding area, despite the design of four storeys. Windows on the northern slope of the roof almost do not affect its surface, thanks to which the body is very compact and homogeneous, especially after closing the shutters. The compositional lines follow the landscape, and the volume of the design only raises on the top of a small hill on which it is designed.

second hand car buying guide Last month, Siliguri resident Puneet Agarwal was looking to buy his first car. Armed with a modest ₹3 lakh budget, his search for a new vehicle couldn’t move beyond the usual entry-level cars like Maruti Alto, Renault Kwid, and the Hyundai Eon. The choices before the 30-year old marketing executive, living in a middle-tier town, were not much. A dejected Puneet was about to give up hope when he stumbled upon an online aggregator of used cars. Puneet is now the proud owner of a certified and spotless 2013 Maruti Suzuki Dzire. He drives sedan class to office.

Puneet is among the 4.2 million buyers fuelling the demand for used cars in India, which broke record sales last year, according to a CRISIL report. Fed by increasing customer aspirations, exponential growth in ecommerce and manufacturer-backed offers, the used car market is witnessing a never-before growth. The new to used car ratio, which was 1:1.2 even a few years back, has grown to 1:2.2 in recent times. It means that for every 10 new cars, 22 pre-owned cars are being bought.

But it’s the paranoia of being fleeced that often grips prospective buyers of used cars in India who in most cases have no idea of how to go ahead with buying such a vehicle. While some like Puneet are fortunate enough, many end up buying a car they don’t want, or worse still, one that’s defective and badly needs repairs. Used Cars are Affordable :

Old car prices are usually much cheaper than brand new cars. I have had a lot of dirty motherfuckers be a part of my life. To be fair, I haven’t always been as understanding of my value when I was a younger person, but what I understand now is that just because I wasn’t exceptional doesn't mean I wasn’t deserving of respect. I have to express the ways in which young black children have to be exceptional in all fields they attempt otherwise they won’t even be considered good enough. And depending on how we perform then people will think that we don’t need to be treated with respect or dignity as a part of that. There have been too many times when people pushed me aside, talked to me like I was an imbecile, and showed me no love. In hindsight I should have raged. I should have been violent. I should have done everything I could have to bust out of the confines that other people continuously wanted to put me in. I should’ve broken windows and cursed people out, because what I know now as a result of years of allowing people to treat however they wanted to, that nothing is worth being a punching bag. People will punch and knock you down just for the sport of it. People will oppress you just for the sport of it. People will marginalize you just for the sport of it. My self-respect, dignity, and heart were effectively beaten out of me by the age of 23.

By the time I turned twenty-four I had had enough. My best friend at the time was Nick Jamero. Me and Nick had met during our freshman year when we were both living in the dorms on Fresno State campus. We would later grow closer during our time in Phi Mu Alpha and participate in the music department of Fresno State. I leaned on Nick for a lot. It was a spotting for a meal here and there and rides. In my mind it was just us being friends, but what I didn’t realize was that Nick was taking inventory of everything he was doing for me. Each ride and each time he was buying me meals it was a token that he would exchange in treating me horribly. Had I known that people who do something for you do it under the pretense that now they have some sort of power over you then I would have never allowed it. Especially from white people. Especially from straight people. I don’t ask for help anymore, especially for financial help. I will die penniless on the street before I ask someone for financial help if it means I get to keep my personal dignity. If you help someone out then do so from the kindness of your heart. But doing things for other people doesn’t enable you to treat them like they are on a leash and you hold the power to belittle them and make them the butt of the joke. Or maybe it does… Either way I am not down for that shit anymore.

I wonder and I think to myself how much of the way the world treats me is due to the fact that I am black and feminine and male-presenting. Through various media we have been taught to laugh at black femininity when it is housed in a male form. It’s okay when Martin Lawrence, Tyler Perry, or Eddie Murphy wears a dress because the purpose of that male figure adorning femininity was to entertain, but for male presenting figures that house or express femininity we are subject to being the butt of the joke even without our own permission. I think through the media a lot of us have been taught to laugh at people like me. The non-binary. The genderqueer. The femme gay boy. What hurts even worse is the fact that I know if I were lighter-skinned then I would not be viewed as much of a dissonant creature than I am. Femininity in all its forms is more heavily policed than masculinity. Masculinity can be whatever it wants to be, but Femininity has so many hoops it has to fit through in order to be taken seriously or viewed as valuable.

Growing up, my family, to be quite honest, treated me fairly horrible. I think in their minds they were doing what was expected of them; that is they were doing “right” by not raising their child to be gay. I felt like I was constantly being attacked for no reason, but the reason was my sexuality. My queerness was always evident and a part of who I am. My femininity was always evident and a part of who I am. Even at the age of 7, I knew I was gay, I knew I was feminine, and I know I was powerful. So when my family continuously tried to beat or attack my queerness then I took that personally as an attack not just to the expression of who I am but to my spirit. I walked around through a large part of my adult life thinking that that was what love was and meant: the people in my life treat me like absolute shit and I still give them my best because its my fault for choosing to be gay and feminine. The sickest part of it all is that I don’t think a majority of my family or past friends think they did anything wrong. It was treated just like a fact: we treat Chevas like shit. He expects it. He allows it. He believes that that is what he deserves.

Nothing I do will ever make up for those moments. I can never go back in time and hug my fifteen year old self and let him know not to change and to fight for himself as hard as possible. Fight for yourself even if that means everyone thinks you are crazy. Even if it means that you are alone. Even if you have no friends. Even if you have to eat lunch alone every single day of highschool. You can not allow disrespect. You can not hang out with friends that continuously make you the butt of the joke. You can not allow anyone, not even your mother or uncle or brother to treat you in a way that is disrespectful and counter to the value and the worth that you know that you have. I have been very reckless a lot of times in my adult life because of the recklessness I should have had in terms of attaining respect for myself. I was trading my respect for anything that seemed like love, but I wasn’t loving myself enough to know that overall what I should have been demanding from these niggas was resepct. I don’t care how you feel about my dark-complexion or my femininity or my poverty or my intellect: you are still going to respect me or you are going to get your teeth knocked in. The lesson that every young person needs to learn before they reach adulthood is how to be themselves and see the power in their authentic selves regardless of what their respective environment is telling them.

I wish I could go back and just fight for myself so much harder than I knew how to at 15. I was so afraid and felt so small. I felt so ugly and horrible and stupid and undeserving of love. No one knows what it felt like to be me or how my lack of dignity or self-respect manifested in so many (so many) horrible moments in my life. Had I known how not fighting for myself would lead to a twenty-something era of abusive relationships and friendships and work environments then I would have spazzed the fuck out sooner. Like the old saying goes, “never let someone get comfortable disrespecting you.” I am willing to sacrifice being loved if it means being respected.

If I could go back and tell my fifteen year old self anything it would be to be louder. It would be to prioritize his goals and his intellectuality. I would tell him to read a million books and practice the guitar for a million hours because those are the things that will bring you closer to your real self. I would tell him to curse his mother and uncle and his brother out: it is better to command respect than to allow disrespect. It is your right as a human being on this earth to make every effort to progress yourself. I would tell him to be out and loud and proud even obnoxiously so. Let the blood hit the pavement. Like the wounds burn. Let the glass break. You are stronger than you think you are. You are more durable than you think you are. Being alone is a superpower that not many people can handle. Be brave and be yourself. Your fists were made for fighting.

All-in-One Pads

Peach & Lily Lazy Day Moisture Pads

This isn't a new favorite (it was my favorite exactly a year ago in 2019), however with COVID-19 lockdowns/restrictions going on all over the world right now - I crave a more simple routine. Especially since there's no point in piling on so many products on your face when you're just going to cover it up with a face mask anyway. And those face masks can be hard to breathe sometimes if you wear them for a prolonged period of time. A couple times I've gotten a pimple around the area where my face mask is rubbing against. These moisture pads make it feel like you had a refreshing sheet mask or a multi-step routine without necessarily using an actual sheet mask or having a multi-step routine. Also, even though we have more time during quarantine life, sometimes we still get lazy and want "the quickest way to a complete routine" - and for my oily/combo skin, this is pretty much it. Now more dry types might feel a bit naked so they might want to top it off with moisturizer, but oilier types (especially now that the weather is warming up) can get away with using just this product during the day after cleansing. These Peach & Lily pads are a lot more moisturizing than I expected. It’s not like it’s only a few pads that are soaking wet - every single pad seems evenly wetted down. Also, the pads never dry out while I’m wiping my face. Sometimes when you use a cheap quality pad product, it seems to dry out faster than you can get to the rest of your face. After one round on my face, the pad is still moist enough for me to do a second round (if I wanted to LOL). These are also perfect for using prior to makeup application. Interesting ingredients include spinach (antioxidants), carrot (sun damage protection & anti-aging), broccoli (detoxify & anti-inflammatory), cabbage (anti-oxidant & anti-inflammatory), kale (reduce dark circles & tighten skin), pomegranate (anti-aging & strengthens skin), peach (fatty acids & firming), and prickly pear (hydrating & fatty acids). Brightening + Smoothing Serum

Peach & Lily Glass Skin Refining Serum

This was actually one of my favorite products of 2018 (the year this product was released). However this serum was so popular at the time of its release, that it kept getting sold out and I never had the chance to repurchase. While I did give it a 4/5 back then, because I couldn't repurchase, naturally I started using other serums and completely forgot about this. I recently overdid it with vitamin C and 10% niacinamide (don't combine the two unless you know your skin doesn't react to the combination). I wanted a serum that brightened my skin as well as have some soothing properties. Now that this serum isn't constantly selling out, I've decided to go back to this and you know what? I think I love this even more now than I did back then. You probably won't appreciate this product as much if you're already hitting it hard with actives but as someone who is pretty much omitting a dedicated vitamin c serum and high percentage (10%) niacinamide from her routine, this still gently and effectively brightens my skin with 2% niacinamide. A high percentage is not everything if it's going to irritate your face in the long run. This also helps with redness and irritation to a certain extent. Overall my skin looks nice and healthy again. I do wish this had stronger firming and redness reducing properties, but overall this is a great serum that really tackles a bunch of different issues. Not everyone will be impressed but if you have similar skin issues like me, this is definitely worth a try. With the Peach & Lily Glass Skin Refining Serum, I feel like I get that “freshly exfoliated” look every day. This serum contains Peach & Lily’s properietary hyaluronic acid complex which according to them a “…blend of short-chain, medium-chain and long-chain hyaluronic acid molecules helps provide hydration at every level of skin; short-chain molecules sink into the deeper layers, while medium-chain molecules fill in the layers closer to the surface of the skin, and long-chain molecules lock in moisture on the skin’s surface so that skin is plumped up from within while the outer layer becomes radiant.” Other interesting ingredients include niacinamide (brightening & balancing), peach extract (fatty acids & firming), East Asian mountain yam (fighting collagen loss & reducing skin flakiness), madecassoide/beta-glucan (anti-inflammatory & collagen synthesis), and peptides (firming). Anti-Aging/Retinol Treatment

The INKEY List Retinol Anti-Aging Serum

As part of incorporating more gentle products into my routine, this is probably the gentlest retinol product I've ever used (without necessarily using the retinol alternative bakuchiol). This time released retinol combined with squalane, really makes you not notice that you've been using retinol on your face. By that I mean I don't have to deal with irritation or extreme dryness and peeling, often associated with using retinol every night. I've never really been able to use retinol every night for these reasons, but with this product, I easily can. Glow Recipe also makes a good retinol product but sometimes I feel like the retinol and PHA combo makes it a tad strong for me to use everyday (I can probably use it every other day without issues). The only bad thing I have to say about this product is that for some, it might be "too gentle" in that you might question if it's really working. I only really use retinol for preventative measures so aside from all the irritation and dryness, I actually never really see that much anti-aging effects. It's more like something that exfoliates and keeps my acne away, LOL. So I can't really say that "stronger" retinol products necessarily have a better effect for me - they're just more irritating if anything. Antioxidant Moisturizer

Peach & Lily Matcha Pudding Antioxidant Cream

I have to admit, I didn't think that much of this moisturizer when I first used it since there was another similar moisturizer that I enjoyed using more at the time. However this actually has quite a bit going for it. Yes it is a bit basic in that it doesn't really have any strong brightening or firming/anti-wrinkle properties. It does have matcha green tea (a great antioxidant and for protecting your skin). It's also a nice medium weight pudding-like texture. It might not be ideal for oily skin, but it's good for normal to dry (drier types might still want something heavier for night though). What I love about this lately is that it plays nicely with the rest of my routine and even though it's medium weight, it doesn't make my combo skin breakout (though with the weather warming up I might have to use this at night). For me, it provides sufficient enough moisture that my face (around the eye area and smile lines) don't look all sunken in by the end of the day. The older that I get, the more that I look for moisturizers to plump and firm my face even if they're just temporarily flooding it with moisture (still a good thing). Lots of moisturizers aren't hydrating enough for aging skin that you actually do look a bit crepey at the end of the day. Multi-Tasking Lip Product

Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Lip Pop

At first this does seem like an expensive lip product. However if you're like me who can't use the majority of (often cheaper) lip products without just as, if not having drier than before - Glow Recipe has created like the perfect product for you and me. I want a good lip scrub, lip balm, and tinted color and this product does all 3 making it perfect for traveling and even lazy days when you just want to consolidate your lip routine (if you have other lip products you still use). I never use lip scrub anymore because this does a great job at keeping my lips hydrated. My lip lines are even less noticeable the longer I wear this. I do try to only wear this during the day because of the tint, however when I'm too lazy to scoop out product from my Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask, just a few quick swipes of this is sufficient before I go to sleep. I mostly sleep on my back by the way, so I never worry about getting product on my pillow/blanket. I think that if you use this every day, this product should last you at least 2 months. It's been about 2 months since I first got this product and I still have some left. If you use this sometimes, then it should definitely last 3 months or so. It's a good value and despite the price, it lasts pretty long and can replace multiple products. You barely notice that it's exfoliating your lips, who wants to go back to a messy lip scrub? Scented Hand Soap

Raw Sugar Liquid Hand Soap Watermelon + Mint

If you're looking for a cruelty free and vegan hand soap (and also love the smell of watermelon), look no further than this one from Raw Sugar. Normally I don't spend much on hand soap nor do I look at more "fancy" hand soap brands. However since COVID-19, there has been a shortage on all the cheaper hand soaps so I've started looking elsewhere. I love anything watermelon (thanks to Glow Recipe and their watermelon line). This was no exception - it's smells like watermelon with hints of mint and it smells so good. It makes me look forward to washing my hands, LOL. While I didn't think this was super moisturizing at first, I think it is working because overtime, I noticed my hands weren't as dry from the constant washing. Right now as I'm typing this, I haven't even applied any moisturizer or hand cream to my hands and they're still not dry or crepey looking. According to Raw Sugar, they use cold pressed plant-based nutrients and organic aloe vera, olive fruit, shea butter, and jojoba oils to hydrate. The mint is anti-inflammatory while the watermelon adds antioxidants. This hand soap sounds about a good as a nourishing face wash. I will definitely repurchase this as soon as it runs out. Also important to note, Raw Sugar donates a bar of soap to a family in need for every product purchased. I can definitely get behind beauty brands that make thoughtful products while also performing thoughtful acts. Dry Wash Spray

Love Home & Planet Rose Petal & Murumuru Re-Wear Dry Wash Spray

I've never heard of a dry wash spray before, but I quickly found multiple uses for this product. This is basically a product to quickly refresh clothing or accessories that are not quite ready to be thrown in the washer just yet. This is definitely useful for things you might wear more than once in a week, such as jackets or accessories. Or if you want to quickly refresh a piece of clothing that you haven't worn in awhile. With its anti-odor technology, it does smell like fresh roses but isn't powering. It also really helps get the wrinkles out of clothes. I haven't tried this on a work/dress shirt, but I had a sweater that was super wrinkled after I took it out of the dryer. I sprayed this all over, smoothed the sweater down a bit and then hung it to air dry. When I checked it later, the wrinkles were all gone. Definitely a life saver when you're constantly battling with wrinkly clothes. Sometimes my clothes start wrinkling faster out of the dryer than I can hang them all up back in my closet. I will always keep this product around! The Daily Task of Preventing My Disciple from Turning to the Dark Side: Chapter 4

After his bath Gu Yunjue went to the attic that had been prepared for him. Separated from Mu Chen's room by a single wall, although it was called an attic, it's actually not small at all, especially for a child. In fact, even when Gu Yunjue grows up, he can still happily live in this spacious room.

At the left and right doors are two men and two women wearing white robes like clear water. Their good faces look the same, low eyebrows, heads down, waiting for orders.

Jing Ming is holding the clothes in his hand, the flute is now hanging from his waistband. Not waiting for Gu Yunjue to speak, he arrogantly walked in saying: "Wear my clothes for now, your new clothes are being made, tomorrow you can wear them."

When Gu Yunjue put them on the long white robes and jade waistband automatically adjust their size, becoming small enough to fit his body. The clothes are giving off an aura of spiritual power.

Jing Ming took out a white ribbon from his belt, saying, "Come, I will give you a nice hairstyle that the Lord has praised before."

After a cup of tea...

Gu Yunjue looked at himself in the mirror, his mood is a bit complicated thinking that the demon prince who terrorized the three realms now has this kind of look. The clothes are unisex, with no difference between male and female. Shizun thinks this is attractive?

Suspiciously he glanced back at Jing Ming, who coughed then raised his head to look outside, avoiding his gaze. Speechless, Gu Yunjue disassembled the bun on his head, combing it out then gathering together the hair around his temples and tying it back. The hairstyle is now relaxed and comfortable.

After fixing his hair, he then asked Jing Ming: "Hasn't teacher come back?"

Jing Ming was puzzled. "The Lord went to the general assembly for the disciple's trial. Perhaps to pick up another disciple to keep you company?"

Gu Yunjue's hand clenches and his eyes flash unhappily at this. As long as the teacher has Gu Yunjue then it should be enough. If master dares to pick another disciple then he will strangle it. If master dares to pick a pair, then he will kill a pair of people!

Jing Ming did not notice Gu Yunjue's reaction. His curiosity was extremely inflated. "Are you really a boy? Are you a demon? Where did the master find you? The Palace Lord's hobby has changed? Your hair doesn't look good..."

Looking at Jing Ming and smiling, Gu Yunjue suddenly became serious. Crooking a finger to gesture Jing Ming to bend down, he whispered: "The master ate a divine immortality pill and I was accidentally born."

Jing Ming gasped in shock.

Gu Yunjue tilted his head, his slender finger gently touching the beauty mark near his eye, and laughed.

Jing Ming at this time realized that Gu Yunjue was just teasing him, said: "You dishonest child!"

Main Peak, Chongyang Palace Hall

Unlike the gorgeous style of the Sunshine Palace, Chongyang Palace is a tall, green and gray building with a calm atmosphere, highlighting the dignity and majesty of the main peak.

Inside is a huge water mirror that shows the progress of the trial. Sect master Yue Ming Ze is there, as well as almost everyone of importance in the sect. The trials are only open every ten years so many people have come to get fresh blood and pick up some good seedlings.

At the site of the trial, the children are desperately climbing. Coarse sand hits their faces but they have no time to wipe it off. A light rain is falling on the mountain, in some places the going is quite tough, thus the would-be disciples are using both hands and feet to climb. Cultivators despise half-hearted people the most, therefore they place great importance in this test of perseverance.

As Mu Chen sets foot inside the hall, robes fluttering gracefully, the crowd of elders is surprised to see his stunning face, cold like frost. The people inside become nervous when his phoenix eyes sweep over their faces. Shocked, they all stood up.

Fortunately, Mu Chen only glanced at them briefly. Some people breathed a sigh of relief at this. Some of those present also despised Mu Chen, thinking that he is just a pretty face who was lucky enough to be chosen as the Lord of Sunshine Palace. If other people had been so lucky, they would have been better than him at cultivation.

Mu Chen did not see how the others reacted to him. Looking at the water mirror that showed a child rolling around in the mud like a monkey, he was glad that he had taken his own disciple away. With his disciple's injury he would not have been able to climb the mountain.

Among the elders in the hall, a female cultivator was pleasantly surprised to see Mu Chen and made a sound: "Yi!" (TN: Just an exclamation.)

Mu Chen heard the sound and looked at the source. Four people were seated in a row with her, one was sleeping while the other three were watching him. Mu Chen never thought he would see the four of them sitting together.

"Greetings to Shishu!" Yue Ming Ze and his three companions stood up, cupping their hands in a polite salute.

Mu Chen then thought of the time when Yue Ming Ze took over as sect master, there was a lot of infighting by dissatisfied members. All of the other lords of the six main peaks, except for Mu Chen, banded together to support Yue Ming Ze. Thinking of this, Mu Chen is a little ashamed. The things he cares about are too few. In the previous life, he didn't even appear in this assembly. Looking at the reaction of the people here today, it seems like they think its more normal for him not to attend.

Yue Ming Ze politely asks: "What matter brings you here, Shishu?"

Yue Ming Ze seems to be his early twenties. Seniority is overturned, there is chaos in the ranks since he was obviously the youngest in his generation but is sitting on the highest seat. Perhaps to look more dignified and older, he dresses in a severe style - a white long unlined close-fitting robe, a green coat, and holding a jade ruler. However, his face has dimples and looks childish, unreliable, and easy to bully. In addition, his cultivation is not very high compared to the other elders in the sect. This has frequently provoked trouble in the Cloud Gate Sect.

Seeing the very young Yue Ming Ze, Mu Chen sighed in his heart. If the first generation elder had not been so anxious to break through a bottleneck, Yue Ming Ze would not have been saddled with so much responsibility at such a young age. It's really a heavy burden.

Before his rebirth, Gu Yunjue's actions had frightened the cultivators and this group had pushed the blame on Mu Chen, claiming that he was the one who taught the evil person, therefore he should be executed to keep the world safe. If Cloud Gate sect were to protect him, they would become the enemies of the entire cultivation world.

At that time Yue Ming Ze, after a hundred years of painstaking efforts, was finally in power, with a firm foundation. When various people wanted to kill Mu Chen just to vent their anger, Mu Chen was handed over but the usually leisurely and carefree sect master defended his Shishu (Martial Uncle). He unexpectedly transformed from a weak cultivator to a strong sect master who dared to confront even the entire community of cultivators.

With these events in mind, Mu Chen felt that he had really been too selfish, not contributing much at all to the sect. Since he now had the opportunity to rebirth, then all his regrets can be resolved. From now on he would help his martial nephew guard Cloud Gate sect, those who threatened it would all die! Every one of them, burned to death!

Yue Ming Ze sees Mu Chen just looking at him and not speaking so he is subconsciously intimidated, silently swallowing his saliva. He was not afraid of anyone but in front of Shishu his face became a bit red. Yue Ming Ze cried a bit nervously: "Shishu?"

Mu Chen helplessly looked back at him, his tone abrupt: "I want to discuss something with you."

He took out two jade bottles from his spatial storage ring. "Here are two pills. It can help a cultivator break through to the Power Boosting stage. I want to exchange them for something." (TN: I cannot translate 可以给门内再添两位合体期的大能 precisely but basically the two pills are extremely valuable to cultivators.)

Inside the hall it's quiet enough to hear a pin drop, as all of the elders are listening to their talk.

The number of cultivators who are in the Power Boosting stage are extremely rare. In the entire Cloud Gate sect there are only three. With just those three Cloud Gate is able to stand firm and become one of the four most powerful sects. If there were two more masters of the Power Boosting Stage then the effect on the sect is easy to predict. Moreover, everyone present is earnestly cultivating and hoping to one day reach that stage but it is hard to break through to the next cultivation realm. Pills that help cultivators pass through a bottleneck are greatly valued. These two pills are a marvelous medicine, nothing could be more treasured by the sect members.

Yue Ming Ze exclaimed: "I did not think that you could refine this level of immortality pill!" He coughed and stiffens his back to maintain the dignity of the sect master. "What does Shishu want to trade for this?"

Mu Chen: "The Heaven and Earth (Qian Kun) Soul Protection Bells."

The Qian Kun Soul Protection Bells are two old artifacts. They are different from other magic weapons in that they have more than one function. They have the ability to attack and protect the body and spirit as long as the user injects his power into the weapon. It can also hurt a person's spirit. The bells are a pair: the Quan bell and Kun bell. It is said that the second generation sect master and his partner wielded the bells together. The two had infinite power, enough to destroy the world. The treasure was sent to Cloud Gate but later on the Kun bell was lost in an immortal-demon war. The Qian bell has not recognized a new master. It is like a dead thing now.

Yue Ming Ze was puzzled, "What do you want to do with the Soul Bell?"

"I will give it to my new disciple to do the ritual." In the previous lifetime, the Soul Bell was one of Gu Yunjue's weapons that he stole from the Cloud Gate sect. Mu Chen thought that if he gave the Soul Bell to Gu Yunjue now then not only would his disciple avoid the crooked path, Cloud Gate sect would also be more secure in the future.

Mu Chen's reply made no sense. The three views of the person who heard it were completely broken. Yue Ming Ze's serious face has signs of smoke. While a group of wannabe disciples were desperately trying to complete the trial, Gu Yunjue's luck was so great that he was chosen as a personal succeeding disciple and Mu Chen even wanted to exchange two valuable pills to get a treasure for his defense.

This type of thinking is abnormal. Is it really necessary for Mu Chen to provoke this much envy for the boy? Examining Mu Chen's expressionless face, Yue Ming Ze cannot guess whether he is deliberately trying to test his disciple or not.

The elders in the hall are much surprised, firstly that Mu Chen actually chose a disciple and, secondly, that he thought of taking the Soul Bell for him. Some of them do not look happy.

Two valuable pills for a useless bell, it seems like a very cost-effective trade. But the two immortality pills are likely to break the balance between the various forces in the sect.

Mu Chen observed the faces of the group of elders but his face was still cold. In his last life, these guys owed him a debt! No matter who is not satisfied, all he has to do is to beat that person up, then they will not dare to speak anymore.

Loki Collectibles: Key God of Mischief Comics to Own for Marvel Fans

When you really think about it, there is probably no comics character more responsible for more amazing runs of Marvel books than Asgard’s God of Mischief, Loki Laufeyson. This is partly due to the secretly high concentration of outstanding Thor runs through the ages, but, as you’ll see, Loki is largely responsible on page for the birth of the shared Marvel Comics Universe, which puts their horns in a lot of different comics pies.

Loki is about to be hotter than ever, which means that key single issues from his comics history are going to become even more collectible than before…and sound investments if you’re hoping to own some pieces of comics history that will appreciate in value over time.

Journey Into Mystery #85

Just two issues prior to this one, Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby had relaunched a Twilight Zone-ey anthology book into Marvel’s home for big, booming Norse god superheroics.

Journey Into Mystery #85 continued the development of that world, and brought Thor’s trickster brother into the Marvel U. This is a fairly straightforward Marvel silver age book, with a silly plot and some stunning, boldly imaginative art from King Kirby. The costumes and characters aren’t quite settled in iconography yet, but much of what Loki will become is here in these pages.

Journey Into Mystery #85 is massively collectible already, and will only be worth more as the show makes him more popular, but it’s also an indelible piece of comics history: Lee and Kirby are really cranking up the Marvel universe here, and you can see the green shoots of the inventiveness and brilliance that makes Kirby the greatest ever on some of these pages. If you’ve got a couple thousand bucks lying around, that is – in addition to being the first appearance of Loki, Journey Into Mystery #85 is the first appearance of Odin, Heimdall, and Balder as well. You’re looking at spending at least $2,000 for a copy, and probably a couple times that if you want one in decent shape.

Avengers #1

There came a day like no other, and that day set the stage for the Marvel Universe as we know it. Avengers #1 is the true birth of the shared Marvel comics world, the first time Marvel characters stopped being guest stars in other books and started existing within them, just off screen. And it’s all because of Loki. Imprisoned on the Isle of Silence by their brother, Loki uses their magic to trick the world into thinking the Hulk is rampaging. That brings together four heroes new to the world: Thor, Ant-Man, Wasp and Iron Man. Those four team up to defeat the God of Mischief, throw him in a lead tank, and then agree to work together moving forward. And the rest was history.

Avengers #1 was always highly collectible, but it’s also extremely popular, so you’ll have lots of chances to snag a copy if you can’t afford to spend $30,000 on an authentic, quality copy from the 1960s. The book has been reprinted several times, most recently in 2016, with its original cover. And there are convention exclusive reprints with J. Scott Campbell covers (sketch and colored) that can be had for only $30.

Thor #353

Walter Simonson may be the definitive Thor storyteller in Marvel history. His behemoth run was the foundation text for arguably the best MCU film, Thor: Ragnarok, and saw him give the defining takes on just about all of Asgard, from Thor himself all the way to minor, secondary villains like Skurge the Executioner or Lorelei. But not many characters did better under Simonson’s watch than Loki. Thor #353 is one of many high points of this run, featuring Loki and Thor fighting alongside Odin to stop Surtur’s rampage.

Compared to earlier entries on this list, the Simonson run as a whole is MUCH more collector friendly. Thor #353 can be had in perfect condition for cheaper than many new books. In fact, you’re as likely to find this issue as part of a lot of Simonson Thor comics as you are to find it alone. And that’s great – the whole run is worth your time.

Thor (2007) #5

It’s hard to believe now, but there was a period in the early 2000s when Marvel just stopped publishing Thor comics. They ended one run with a magnificent Ragnarok, let Asgard lie dormant for almost 3 years, and then brought the Norse gods back in a big way, and nobody was more changed by that return than Loki. She returned from the post-Ragnarok nothingness as a woman in this issue, written by J. Michael Straczynski and dazzlingly drawn by Olivier Coipel. Expect this to be referenced in the new series.

Thor #5 is almost certainly underpriced as of publication. You can find copies of the regular cover for close to cover price, while the issue’s lone variant by J. Scott Campbell is going for in the $25-$40 range. This is almost certain to go up because of the show, and if Loki spends any serious screen time as a woman, it should go up by a lot. Now might be a good time to get in on the ground floor.

Journey Into Mystery #622

No run of Loki stories has likely had a greater influence on the MCU’s take on Loki than what Kieron Gillen did with him, starting at the end of the big Siege crossover, Loki dies at the hands of The Sentry, and is immediately resurrected as a preteen version of himself. From there on, Kid Loki becomes one of the most beloved Marvel comics characters of the past decade: tricky, razor smart, self-aware, and ambiguous.

This issue in particular, with excellent pencils from Doug Brathwaite, is an incredible deep dive on who Loki is and what role they serve in the story of Asgard, and the combination of quality and intermedia importance is helping this issue do some numbers online – the second printing in particular, featuring a photo cover of Tom Hiddleston fully be-horned in his movie Loki getup, is going for between $75 and $100. That will probably calm down some after the show, but I’d bet not by a ton, considering where the story might go.

Young Avengers #1

Gillen’s time shepherding Kid Loki continues as the trickster teen assembles yet another cadre of Avengers. It features a team of Marvel sidekicks and legacy heroes echoing their predecessors – the children of Vision and Scarlet Witch (Wiccan and Speed) and Wiccan’s boyfriend Hulkling; Kate Bishop, the second and better Hawkeye; kid Loki; Noh-Varr, the Marvel Boy from an alternate reality; depowered mutant genius Prodigy; and alternate reality ass kicker Ms. America.

So between it’s likely importance to the future of the MCU (this team is almost guaranteed to be the foundation of the inevitable Young Avengers MCU entry) and the staggeringly gorgeous art from Jamie McKelvie, this book is a must buy. Fortunately, there are lots of options – Marvel knew this would be a hit when it launched, so they had multiple variant covers (from both Skottie Young and Scott Pilgrim’s Bryan Lee O’Malley, as well as the now-traditional blank sketch variant). You can find original covers for a little over cover price, and variants in the $10-$25 range. The second printing of the first issue – with a black, white and blue sketch version of the O’Malley variant – can be found in that range too.

Loki: Agent of Asgard #1

If Kieron Gillen’s story is about what Loki means to the story of the Marvel Universe, Al Ewing’s Loki: Agent of Asgard is about what Loki means to their own story. As Young Avengers wrapped, Kid Loki was destroyed and replaced by a Hiddlestonier older version, one obsessed with establishing their own heroism. So they cut a deal: the ruling All-Mother triumvirate in Asgard would wipe old Loki stories from Asgardian records in exchange for Loki completing missions on their behalf on Earth. Agent of Asgard is half heist comic, half deep character piece, with an evil old version of Loki being the series’ recurring villain. Ewing and artist Lee Garbett turn in a witty, fun book that has some of the finest Loki character work in all ten realms.

Prices on this book have risen steeply of late, likely in anticipation of everything with Loki’s name on it getting hot. As such, you’ll be hard pressed to find a copy of even the first printing going for less than $15, and the real heavy hitter here – the sketch variant of Frank Cho’s Jim Steranko homaging Loki cover – is up over $200.

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #8

In this issue of Ryan North and Erica Henderson’s top-tier Marvel run, New York is under attack from Ratatoskr, the trash talking squirrel who runs messages up and down the World Tree. Squirrel Girl battles Ratatoskr’s rumor mongering with the help of Loki, Odinson, Jane Foster Thor, and SG’s roommate, Nancy Whitehead, who it turns out is the author of a great deal of Asgardian fan fiction. Only with all the Norse Gods replaced by cats. Loki, of course, finds this hilarious, and spends the rest of the story with Cat Thor’s head, and it is utterly delightful for everyone except their very frustrated brother.

It’s not an impactful moment in Loki’s history. It does nothing to the MU’s metanarrative, and until they decide to bring in the Netflix properties and use Squirrel Girl as Jessica Jones and Luke Cage’s au pair like they did in the comics, this will have nothing to do with the MCU. So you can find this for cheaper than cover price, or as part of lots that are cumulatively MUCH cheaper than cover price. And that’s great: these Squirrel Girl stories were terrific. They’re worth every penny at twice the price.

Vote Loki #1

Christopher Hastings and Langdon Foss do something interesting with Loki here: instead of using him to comment on the Marvel Universe, they use them to comment on ours. Vote Loki was a send up of American electoral politics, mocking the…ever-changing nature of the American electorate by having Loki campaign for President as an open, avowed, amoral liar. I’ll be honest, there are moments where this one still lands a little shakily, but it’s certainly improved since its unfortunate release timing (in the middle of the 2016 election). It’s smart and fun, and from the looks of the Loki trailer, probably important.

Like everything else with Loki in the title, the market has gone a little crazy for these of late. The main covers are going for multiple times the cover price, and the variants (particularly the Valerio Schiti incentive cover for the first issue) up in the 3 and 4 figures. Wild for a book that’s this new.

Thor #4

Some of these books are here because they’re brilliant investigations of comic storytelling, or deeply personal character studies of complex, multifaceted comics characters with a half century of history. And some are on here because they have a scene where Thanos tells the Norse goddess of death “It’s not you, it’s me” in the middle of a sham wedding in Hel. Thor #4 is almost at the big War of the Realms, the culmination of Jason Aaron’s nearly ten years writing Thor, and it’s an absolute blast. If you read the excellent Aaron run from start to finish, this will be one of your favorite issues.

If you get this issue’s James Harren variant – obtainable at less than $10 – you’ll be very happy with yourself for doing it.

martin k blackwood for the character ask game?

First impression: I ah. I’ve tried to remember my first impression of Martin recently, and I don’t remember it very well for some reason. I was binging the podcast at that point and mostly at work, so there’s a LOT I don’t remember from my first listen-through. I recall thinking “Oh, honey, no” a lot, mostly at the points where he mentions he was doing his “due diligence,” but I don’t remember much else. I probably thought he sounded sweet and like that nice fellow that asked me to vote for The Magnus Archives for a long-since-finished podcast award thing. D:

Impression now: Martin is such a bitch, and I love him so mu-hu-huch. There are some...discussions to be had about his development over the course of Season 5 that I have varying stances on, but those aside, while he is largely sweet and kind, he’s also petty and thinks a bit in black and white, and I love that so much about him. He feels like a real person with idiosyncrasies and hypocrisies to call his own. (So does Jon, of course, and many of the other main characters, but I especially like how Martin’s are presented for most of the series.)

Favorite moment: I want to say this will be easier than deciding for Jon, but who the fuck am I kidding. In episode order:

1) His heart-to-heart with Jon in “Infestation” 2) “I just worry. You needed five stitches after you ‘accidentally’ stabbed yourself with the bread knife.” 3) Martin and Tim’s scenes in “Hide and Seek” and “The Librarian” 4) The end of “Contaminant”: “It’s just what he’s doing seems really dangerous. And I get that he’s worried about us. I mean, we worry about him as well,” and with Basira at the end. 5) I ALMOST FORGOT LYNNE HAMMOND. ALERT ALERT. 6) The whole beginning sequence in “Breathing Room,” when him, Melanie, and Martin are sorting through Gertrude’s storage unit 7) “Sorry, Elias. I can’t hear you. There’s a door in the way” 8) Martin talking to the tape recorders. Full stop. I don’t give a single solitary fuck about them being Webby. It’s still cute. 9) Martin talking to Daisy at the end of “Scrutiny” 10) Two words: Simon Fairchild. The “our experience of the universe has value” quote is my blog quote. 11) I can’t not include “Of course I’ll tell you if I see any good cows” 12) LISTEN. This gets glossed over by the fandom for some reason, but this exchange in “Dwelling”: Martin: “We seem safe in here, at least.” Jon: “I suppose so.” Martin: “Bit of a hideaway?” He fucking says that in A VOICE I CANNOT DESCRIBE TO YOU but it’s like. Smug/obnoxiously happy couple voice - or something. And I can’t. 13) “Recollection” kicks me in the teeth every damn time. 14) Also everything around the statement in “Moving On” 15) “Quiet” in its entirety 16) “Oh, I’m the antichrist’s plus one” and that whole scene with Melanie, really, in “Scavengers”

Idea for a story: Fffff. I don’t usually think of stories for Marto. Mmm. So far, he’s been the character I’ve been projecting my gender struggles onto, not Jon, so I suppose I really like the idea of Martin exploring his gender identity at 31/32 years old in the Highlands once he’s made it to relative safety. (I know I’ve already written something about it, but I plan to write more.) It’s really important to me to have stories of folks past their 20s exploring gender, gender presentation, sexuality, and romanticism, and Marto’s my vehicle for that. Other than that...the only other ideas I have are potential Rusty Quill Big Bang fic premises, so. I’ll just leave it at that.

Unpopular Opinion: I tend to think that Martin was written more coherently than some of the fandom thinks he was in Season 5. I have issues with his characterization in Season 5, but not as many, I don’t think, as some of the fandom. I’m not talking about the things the character says and does in the narrative, per se, but rather the continuity of his character development, to be clear.

Favorite relationship: Ha. Again, JMart, but I also enjoy reading him in S1 Archive Polycule setups, JonMarTim, and very occasionally MarTim. For some reason, I’m not nearly as much of a Martin multi-shipper as I am a Jon multi-shipper.

Favorite headcanon: that Martin is multi-spec somehow and some flavor of nonbinary - or honestly just queer, that he’s comfortable or eventually becomes comfortable blurring lines and venturing into gray territory. There’s a post on here that occasionally goes around that goes something like: Someone: “What’s your sexuality, Martin?” Martin: “I don’t know. Jon, what’s your gender today?” or something like that, and I love that fluidity for Martin as something he repurposes for himself and himself only. I also really love low-empathy autistic!Martin.

I just had to bring my car to the shop for a repair. They ended up needing to keep it. Now a rental was covered under the warranty. So at least the rental was covered. But the guy had me signing off on insurance and what not. I guess the insurance on my car would cover the rental if I had an accident. But they would take from my cars deductible. Some animation of Saki is definitely 2010s, but it keeps feeling like this show was from 10 years ago from the stripped-back style. It’s quite the whiplash, but it’s not something I was ever bothered over (if you remember Saiyuki Reload Blast, that was a similar dilemma).

“…you’re an old hag once you’re over 15…” – Aside from vaguely calling back YOI’s young ages for retiring (which makes me kind of sad), there are PreCure girls who are over 15 (Cure Moonlight was 17) and the Outer Senshi were all older than 15 with the exception of Sailor Saturn, IIRC.

I think the OKAN on Sayori’s apron is meant to be short for okaasan, although I might be wrong there. (*still imagining what a wonderful world we live in, to be blessed with an adaption of this manga…even with two anime-original characters…*)

According to the rules of the game, you can only have one party in one time period at a time. Therefore, by bending the rules, you make for a more compelling anime…huh. They did it in Katsugeki too, although it was in a slightly different way.

Oh boy, I looked into this and this white-looking outfit is Yasusada’s Kiwame! Ooh, I was looking forward to this in Katsugeki and I finally get it! (I left before Kiwame was a thing, so I finally get to vicariously live out my Kiwame fantasies, LOL.)

If you’ve made it this far in TR, you obviously know how much Yasusada values Okita-kun…I’m so proud of my boy, even if he wasn’t a particularly special sword to me…

It’s wonderful to know that feeling – that I’ve supported TR from before the animes happened because of one measly sword known as Kashuu Kiyomitsu. That I now have friends all over the world with their own favourite swords who I can chat to anytime I want, because Toshiki Masuda got involved with a small franchise that got really big (in Japan). I think that’s a power of Boueibu’s “rookie system”, if I were to give it a name.

…With that, I say “farewell” to 2 seasons of Hanamaru! See you again someday!

I think, out of simplicity, I’ll call this show “Saredo” (“Even Still”) instead. As to how I was attracted to this show, it was because not only are there some great voices at the helm, but I think “physics x magic” could really go places as a concept.

Guy with big sword. It reminds me of a lot of shonen anime, like D Gray Man…or even Deltora Quest…

“SareRyuu”? That seems like a strange name, I think “Saredo” suits it better.

The only thing I fixated on in Gigina’s full name was the weird mention of “Ashley” somewhere in it. If anyone were to tease him, that would be a wide opening for them to attack him with.

This is looking like a Grancrest all over again, which spells bad things (LOL) about this show. Despite that, an Aini seems to be the spell Gayus (learnt his name from promo material) was using.

Gayus and Gigina have a great rapport. If they decide to go comedy with this show, it seems that would be very welcome here.

My mind is blown…it’s a sword, but it also provides armour and kind of acts like a gun in how it does that…amazing…

I feel like I’m really back in the driver’s seat, now that I’m getting my first new action anime in 2 seasons! Winter wasn’t bad but it can’t keep an action anime fan down!

Even though these fantasy words and names are going to make my head spin and I’m sure this show isn’t for everyone, I’ll be keeping it on for now. You can tell it’s more competent than Mahou Shoujo Ore from the air it holds, but Mahou Shoujo Ore is a lot more fun…so this’ll be a tough decision if I have to cut either of them…
