“So you’re not taking into consideration what they said to you?”
He was.  He was far more than he should admit. Acknowledging that he had done wrong all these years was a bitter pill to swallow but one he thought he could endure. But fixing it?
“The market has always been a certain way, Ms. Albright. You know this.”
“Please, after everything we’ve been through couldn’t it be Hazel?” She set her muffins down, unwrapping them and placing one next to him on the desk. She would not push him to eat, but the request was clear.  “And yes, the market has always condoned things like the docks and the auctions. The flesh pits. But it doesn’t mean it has to.”
Tumblr media
Stepping aside, he motioned for her to come in. She looked out of place in his derelict home, what with her sheer lace and crimson hair and manicured nails.  She had certainly come far in the world
“To what do I owe the pleasure?” he asked, shutting the door and heading towards the kitchen. He was sure he had some bread and cheese around here somewhere.  She ate very little these days but she usually partook in the process while drinking with him.
“I came to talk about your wayward bird.” Her tone was guarded.
“What he’d do now?”
Tumblr media
Now, normally I give a little preview but this one is NSFW so I really can't. Be warned that it is angsty as fuck along with it being kind of steamy. And yes, it is between Milo and MC. Also check out his full body art piece over on the Velvet Guard tier.
Tumblr media
A little Hazel and Milo moment. Because those two needed a conversation.
“I’m making hot chocolate. If you want any.”
“Milo, you haven’t been up here in close to ten years. Why are you making hot chocolate.”
“Because I haven’t been up here in close to ten years,” he said wryly.  Removing the kettle from the stove he began going about making cocoa.  Frothed milk steamed from the small little pot, chocolate already placed within the cup.

warning
idiots in love + Eddie is endearingly oblivious to you/reader's open flirting where he's concerned, sloooow burn., mentions of divorce/marital troubles (Carol + Tommy), Carol being the same mean girl she was in high school, barb and robin hooked up + made things official and some angst about them having to hide it (cos 80s were not the time to be wlw or mlm, it's sad buuut. I'm writing this accurate to the time period so.. there will be internal fear/angst and anger that they can't just be together openly.), sexual tension, lots of little touches, swearing, a confrontation between reader/carol that kind of ends on a vulnerable!carol note?, post season 4 au with absolutely no sci fi driven plot / previous seasons did not happen here either, fyi. Hawkins is just a normal small midwestern town. OH AND.. Eddie might seem OOC to some, this is merely my take on the character.
<- reader/you are a female. reader/you have female parts. reader/you also have a specific style aesthetic ( ie this or this ) and a defined personality + nicknames and/or petnames. reader/you also happens to be Joyce Byer's oldest child, putting reader/you at 21 which is the same age as Eddie here. So.. this is another self indulgent thing and I am.. not sorry or ashamed. if specific readers aren't your thing, dldr ig?

“You askin me out on a date, __?”
You realize what you’ve done and you’re panicking a little. Then you shrug. “Maybe I am.” you’re dragging your fingers over the raised edges of his tattoo and he has to bite back a groan. “It’s just the drive in.” you laugh softly.
“The drive in, huh?”
“Mhm.. there’s a horror movie playing I really wanna see. And my friends are all babies, Eddie. So am I, come t’ think of it.”
“So you want me t’ go.. Protect you, huh?” he’s teasing right back, totally unaware of what his teasing is doing to you, because if he knew how crazy it drove you -or how wet it made you, whenever he teased like this..

" ____ since when do you work for Ms. Albright?" Carol's voice has you looking up from a growing pile of transcripts, depositions and other legal documents.
You roll your eyes and you start off strong ignoring her but then she does the obnoxious throat clearing bit.  "What do you want, Carol?"
Carol swallows hard. "I have a consult. 3 pm?"
"Shit. She's in court right now. All I can tell you is come back in a few minutes, she should be back then..if court doesn't run over." Carol isn't leaving when you tell her this. Your hand settles on your hip. "You don't have t' wait around, y'know. I'll tell her you checked in."
She's still lingering.
You turn your attention to the documents and files littering your desk. You can feel her staring and it's giving flashbacks to the way she always did this right before she decimated your self esteem back in high school. "Say whatever you're thinking. Just get it out and leave, Carol because I am up to my ears in files and phone calls right now."
"You should really thank me."
You scoff at her audacity. "Now why would I do that, huh? I mean, I'd understand if any of the useless shit you did or said actually.. ya know..inspired me. None of this came from your bullying though."
"Are you really sure about that?" Carol asks and you clutch your sides in laughter. "You really are delusional, huh?"
"It's true. You weren't anything before. People didn't see you. Unless they wanted to hurt you or needed amusement in the form of making you cry."
You laugh.
"I was invisible because I chose to be though? Some of  us don't need constant validation. So whatever point you think your making is.. useless. Kinda like you always were."
"Bitch."
"Aw, thank you, buttercup."
Ms. Albright walks in and she's fuming about the outcome of her case. You clear your throat and nod to Carol and she raises a brow. "Did we have an appointment?"
"Carol, ma'am. I'm your 3 pm."
"Uh huh?"
"My mother, she uh..she made my appointment?"
"Oh! Okay, come right this way, sweetheart!"
You sink down in your desk chair and recline your legs against the edge of the desk. You're tempted to eavesdrop but then again, you just don't care enough about Carol enough to bother, so you get back to organizing files and putting them away. By the time 4 pm rolls around, you've lined up your bosses entire next day and you've made it to m with sorting the files.
Carol wanders out of the woman’s office and it looks as if she’s been crying. And normally, you’d have something snarky to say, but she just looks so hurt that for once, you feel really, really bad for her.
She barely meets your gaze as she walks past your desk, but once she’s at the door to the office, she pauses. “Go ahead and laugh. I know you want to. Everybody else is laughing. Everybody but me.”
She turns to lock eyes with you and you do the same, popping a bubble with your gum. “Why would I laugh? Look, I dunno what led to this, but… Even you deserve to try and find your own happiness. Maybe you should do that, Carol.”
Carol gives you a nod and steps out of the office, letting the door close softly behind her. You stretch and stand, tidying up your desk as you wander into Ms. Albright’s office to give her the list of appointments and consultations you took down from her calls for the rest of the week.
“Another one made the same mistake I did.” the woman says it without any prompting or further context and you shrug. She takes the paper from you and reads over it, smiling at you. “I’ll see you bright and early tomorrow.”
You nod and smile, wandering back out into the front of the office to gather your things. And as you walk past the diner, you spot Carol Perkins sitting inside. Nursing a milkshake, with her toddler sitting in a high chair and her 5 month old asleep in a car seat carrier.
“Those poor kids.” you mutter, shaking your head. Remembering when it was your own mother in Carol’s situation. Wondering what the final straw for Carol was because you know exactly what the final straw for your mother was. And just thinking about it all makes you flinch a little. You make your way down, wandering into the office of the newspaper Nancy works at.
“How was your first day working with Albright?”
“It was.. Interesting. I mean, it’s not exactly what I planned, Nance.. But maybe my plan is changing.”
Nancy smiles brightly at you. “That’s great!”
“Carol came in.”
Nancy gapes. “No way.”
“Mhm.”
“Well, my mom did mention that Tommy’s mother told him they were getting divorced soon. I feel bad for them.”
“I feel bad for their kids.” you say it and sigh, shaking your head. “Anyway, let’s think about literally anything else. Did my lug of a brother tell you anything yet?” you ask, giggling when she shakes her head and gives you a confused look. You shrug. “I may or may not know he’s up to something really, really big.”
“Oh he is, huh?”
“Mhm. But I can’t tell you.”
“Damn it, __.. Why do you always insist on doing this? You’ve done this to Barb and I since we were kids.”
“Because I can. It’s fun, watching the two of you try everything under the sun to get it out of me.”
“C’mon. We need to get a move on. Barb and Robin are headed into town now. And I’m starving.”
“So am I. The takeout I ordered at 9 is wearing off.” you admit, making Nancy gape. “You didn’t take a lunch break?”
“I was in the zone, Nance.”
Robin smiles as she feels Barb’s body melt into hers. Barb’s eyes flutter open and she gives Robin a sleepy peck on the freckled bridge of her nose, raising a hand to caress her face. “Last night was..” Barb trails off, she’s searching for the best word to describe what finally happened between the two of them the night before after months of dancing around their feelings. But there’s not a word that even comes close. Robin sighs in content. “Amazing. Mind blowing. Every good thing I’ve ever wanted t’ feel.” she goes quiet, the two a tangle of arms and legs beneath a faded purple sheet as Robin rolls onto her back and pulls Barb so that she’s partially draped on top of her.
But the afterglow is short lived when a car door slams outside, the sound floating in through the crack in Robin’s bedroom window. Barb pries herself apart from Robin to move to the end of the bed and peer out the window. And she’s wide-eyed when she turns back to look at Robin. “It’s your mom!”
“Shit!” Robin can feel her heart speed up and suddenly, she’s wide awake as panic sets in. Barb has slipped out of bed and Robin joins her, the pair gathering flung articles of clothing off of the bed and helping each other get dressed. Unable to keep their hands to themselves, pausing to exchange breathless and needy kisses or rest their forehead against the other one’s forehead. “I hate that we have to hide this.”
“Me too.” Robin breathes out against her lover’s mouth. Barb motions for Robin to turn facing away and she’s just hooking the last clasp in Barb’s bra when they hear Robin’s mother shut the front door to the trailer behind her and call Robin’s name. Barb nods to the open window, heading over to slip out and Robin comes over too, helping  Barb out, Barb lingering in the window to steal another deep kiss and caress Robin’s face. “I’ll go bring the car up and pretend I just got here.”
Robin nods, pouting as Barb pulls away from her and jumps out the window of her bedroom, bolting across the lawn. Robin’s mother is knocking on the door at this point and Robin makes her way over, opening the door.
“Oh good. You’re awake. Didn’t you hear me come in, Robbie? Come help me bring in the groceries.”
Robin smiles, nodding. A pang of guilt at having to lie to her mother again, but for now, it’s what she has to do. She has to come up with a way to spring everything on her mother gently.
As they unload the trunk of Robin’s mom’s car, Barb pulls to a stop behind it in her own car. Robin’s mom glances from the idling car to Robin and she smiles.
Robin is blushing again, it’s something she doesn’t even realize she’s doing. But her mother picks right up on it. She laughs softly. “Look who’s here, Robbie!” she gives a bright grin, waving at the girl currently sitting inside the parked car. Barb kills the engine and gets out just as Robin’s mother takes in a few more bags from the trunk. Robin steps up into her girlfriend -awed by the fact that now, it’s official. Now she can actually call her this, even if for the time being, it’s kept private. Between the two of them.
She gives Barb a little peck on the lips and Barb laughs softly, returning the small peck. She nods to the trunk. “I’ll grab some bags too.”
As Barb grabs bags to help carry them into the trailer, Robin is silently mulling everything over, waiting. She stops Barb on the steps.
“We have to tell someone soon. I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to keep this a secret.” and Barb nods, smiling. Stepping up to her girlfriend as she mumbles quietly, “I was thinking the same thing. Keeping you.. Keeping us.. Hidden.. I don’t want to.”
Robin smiles bright, opening the door so that Barb can step into the trailer. As the two of them set the bags that they’d grabbed from the trunk down, her mother speaks up. “Do you have to work today?”
“I need to get going, actually.”
Barb nods. “I can take her, Mrs. Buckley.”
Robin’s mother smiles. “She’s such a sweet girl, Robbie. You two have fun!”
As the two make their way out to  Barb’s parked car, they let out very ragged breaths. “That was.. Close.”
“Not as close as last weekend. I was just about to kiss you and Steve wandered out onto the patio to smoke.” Barb admits, making Robin gape at her in surprise. “You were.. About to kiss me?”
Barb laughs softly. “Why wouldn’t I want to kiss you, huh?”
Robin laughs, shrugs and answers quietly, “I.. I don’t know. I’m still shocked, okay?” Barb nods, smiling as she turns out of the driveway and onto the dirt and gravel road leading into Forest Hills. “Me too.”
“I hate that we have to hide this.”
“So do I. We’re going to tell everyone soon.”
“We are.”
As the car heads into town, Barb’s hand leaves the wheel, settling over the top of Robin’s hand, giving it a soft little squeeze before Robin laces their fingers together and leans towards Barb, leaning her head against Barb’s shoulder.
“These heels are killing my feet.” you stop behind the rest of your friends to  take off the heels you’ve been wearing all day and Nancy laughs. “I don’t know why you keep wearing them.”
“Because they make my ass look good?” you laugh as you shrug and look up at her through a curtain of hair. Nancy’s laughing too. “But you’re always complaining about how painful they are.”
“You’ve got me there.” you straighten to full height and start to walk again, the heels tucked beneath your arm. As you make your way past the service station, you happen to see Eddie Munson sitting on a 5 gallon barrel out in the back. He’s smoking, dark brown hair stuck to his face. He’s got his shirt off and a pair of FR overalls with the bib down at his waist and you’re mesmerized.
“__.. You’re staring again.”
“Uh uh.”
“You were.”
“I can’t help it he’s pretty and my eyes enjoy the view.” you give a sheepish shrug and Nancy laughs, shaking her head at you. “Instead of staring, go do something about it.” she gives you a gentle shove towards the opening in the  fence.
“I can’t!”
“You can. You need to because the sexual tension between you is unreal, okay? Look.. I’ve been in the same room as both of you at the same time and I almost choked on the way the air got so thick.”
You laugh, shaking your head. But you’re lingering in the opening of fence. Your eyes roam over him, taking in the side profile. The grease smear on his cheek. The way kissable lips curl around a Marlboro Red as he drags the back of his hand over his sweaty forehead to wipe away the sweat.
“It’s a new world, __. You can totally make the first move.”
“I cannot!” you’re gaping at Nancy when you say it, but then you happen to look back just in time to see Eddie glance up, looking right at you. He grins and stands, wandering over.
You swallow hard as he comes to a stop in front of you because there’s just something about the way he absolutely towers over you that drives you crazy. You step closer before you can stop yourself and Eddie chuckles. “Careful, woman. I’m all sweaty n’ dirty n’ shit right now.” Doe eyes settle on your bare feet. “What the hell are y’ doin, there’s glass and shit out here.”
“These shoes,” you raise the pair of stilettos so he can see them, “Were killing my feet.”
He snickers to himself, shaking his head. He’s trying to stop himself but he just can’t. The urge to be closer to you wins out so he steps even closer. “How’d your first day go?”
“It went.” you laugh. “It was pretty boring. All I did was try to give the woman an actual filing system that was easy to keep up with and answer phones?” you notice that his knuckles are caked in dried blood so you raise his hand, surveying the damage as you hiss and glance up at him. “What the hell did you do?”
He chuckles. “Got th’ station wagon from hell in my garage bay. I might’ve slammed the damn hood on my hand because of course, the hood latch is a piece of garbage too.”
“Eddie, you need to clean this.”
“Woman, it’s fine.”
“Eddie, your hand could rot.” you scold gently. He chuckles, turning away to thump his cigarette into the gravel behind him. Then he turns to face you again. And he’s got this teasing look in his eyes. “Aw..” he mutters, leaning down just a little, “You worried about me, doll?”
You stick out your tongue. “I’m just telling you what could happen if you don’t clean out the wound.”
“You really don’t wanna know what I did last week when th’ box cutter slipped when I was tearin’ down boxes at the record store.” he chuckles. He’s teasing a little. You swallow hard. “I probably don’t. I swear to God if you say you used super glue…”
“Maybe I did.”
“God damn it, Eddie. If you needed actual medical attention.. What is it with men and their stubborn refusal to go to a fucking doctor?” you laugh softly, shaking your head. Eddie laughs too and he shrugs. “And women who insist on wearin’ shoes that hurt their feet. Kinda the same thing, right?”
“Not really?” you raise a brow, laughing again.  Raising a hand to rest against his bare chest before you even realize that you’ve done it. Eddie’s breath hangs and he gulps as he looks down at the way your hand’s settled against his chest tattoos.
He shuffles his feet because currently, all the blood in his body is southbound. Straight to his cock.
And you’re struggling. Trying to think of something to say. When you open your mouth, you’re honestly not expecting what comes out.
“Are you doing anything later?”
Eddie rubs his chin as he stares down at you, trying not to marvel over how your pretty little body would be easily engulfed by his. Or how good that might feel. How it’s something he might be able to let himself get used to.
You barely manage to pull yourself together and when you go to answer him, you accidentally squeak out your answer. He laughs and nods. “9’s okay, right?”
“9 is perfect.”
“Are you opposed to the motorcycle?” he asks.
“Not at all.” you mumble out the answer, managing to step away from him a little as Nancy laughs nearby and speaks up. “I think Barb and Robin are at the  diner waiting.”
You glance at her to nod and turn your attention back to Eddie. “Try not to bust anymore knuckles today, Eddie?”
“I’m not makin any promises, woman.” Eddie responds, stepping up into you. His hand lingers close, grazing against your hip and you feel your breath hang in your throat. “I gotta get going.” you finally manage to say it after about four or five seconds of just staring up at him.
Mesmerized.

Title: Strange Trails
Night Market Western AU inspired by collaborative chatter in the discord.
Features an unspecified MC and Gabriel as the Sheriff
The jingle of keys announce his arrival but you don’t move. Hat over your eyes, laid out on the bench. It’s not the worst place you’ve ever slept, probably. Doesn’t feel like it at any rate and that’s good enough for you.
The click of the key in the lock, on the other, well, that warrants a glance and you do, tipping the hat just far enough to watch the cell door swing open, the sheriff’s boots standing squarely on the other side.
You let your eye travel up his dark clad legs, past the gun on his hip and the badge on his chest. The glint of tin in the afternoon light glowing like gold.
“You’re free to go,” he says, the words clipped like they’re delivered reluctantly, but firm and clear. The sheriff seems like a man who puts a lot of weight in his word.
You lay there for another few seconds, considering. You’ve got nowhere to go. You don’t even know where you came from before this. Just a vague impression of somewhere back east.
Must have hit your head harder than you thought when the gentleman pushed you into the cellar. Everything before that is a haze of dust and noise.
Still, you reckon at the very least you owe him a thank you kindly. Might be without him you wouldn’t have made it into town at all.
“Ms Malady at the saloon has rooms for rent if you need somewhere to stay,” he adds, his eyes fixed on the floor like it pains him to offer you anything.
You sit up at last, swinging your feet around to carry you upright, dusting off your hat before you settle it back on your head. “And my gun?”
The sheriff’s eyes narrow, gleaming silver in the dying day. “We can collect it before you leave.”
As you stand, stretching, savoring the moment before you’re once again free, you consider what to do next. You pause in the door, studying him as carefully as he’s studying you.
“I’m not here to make trouble,” you say slowly, carefully. You try to put some heft into your words to match his earnest. “I didn’t plan to get caught in that storm.”
“No one plans to get caught,” he answers, but something in his eyes seems to have shifted. They feel a touch softer than the granite they were this morning as he leads you to his desk to get back your Quilt 45. They don’t make guns like this anymore and you’d be sorry as hell to lose it in something as simple as bad luck.
“That’s a fine weapon,” he says, escorting you to the door as you sheath it on your hip.
“My granny’s before mine.”
He nods up the main road. “The inn is that way. Ms. Malady will see to you.”
“Fella I met on my way in,” you start, gesturing to your head, “one who helped me into the Albright’s cellar, know where I can find him?”
“Describe him,” the sheriff orders. He has that way. All his statements were orders when they came from behind that badge.
“Didn’t get the best look at him under the circumstances.”
The sheriff thinks for a moment. “If you leave word at the inn that you’re searching for him, I’m sure he’ll come forward. The Night Market isn’t a large town. Someone will know they’re responsible.”
As you step off the porch it occurs to you that you got a good look at his hand. “He had a funny ring. Big one. I could see it through the haze.”
The sheriff’s face does something complicated and suddenly the softness is gone. In its place is that hard suspicion from before. “You hit your head quite hard, didn’t you? You must be mistaken. You should see a doctor if you have the means.”
The two of you stare for a long moment and you consider how to respond.
You know what you saw on his hand. You might not remember much but you remember that.
“Safe travels,” he says with finality. Get out of my town, he leaves unsaid but still felt. Still heard.
“Have a good day, sheriff.”

Further thoughts on Love Simon and its adaptational changes from Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda:
Simon’s family
The one change that jumped out to me while listening to the audiobook that I felt was absolutely necessary if adapting it to screen was cutting the character of Alice. It’s the lowest-hanging fruit, and you could absolutely do something interesting with Nora to keep some of Alice’s aspects in the character.
Which… they sort of did? I mean, ultimately, Nora in the film is a VERY different character than in the book. But this makes sense because:
They also drastically changed Simon’s parents. Or… they’re not actually that DIFFERENT, it’s just that the film cut the entire plot thread about them being overbearing and embarrassing. They’re still pretty much as overbearing and easygoing as they are in the book, but them learning from this isn’t really part of the film.
Oh, also, they did give some of Alice’s character traits to the mom, specifically the outspoken feminism stuff. It did feel a little shoe-horned in though.
That said, I actually do like the efficiency with which they addressed the ‘Jack makes jokes about gay people’ stuff. They brought forward the tension between Simon and Jack to ‘earlier’ in the story, and they did actually show him doing it a couple of times, without having it be a major throughline that would require more time from him.
So Simon’s family is different, but I think that makes sense. The throughline of the story is really about Simon, Blue, and their friends. Simon’s family is a secondary emotional and plot centre.
Leah and Abby
This is a small thing, but Abby lives on the way to school rather than far away in another direction. This is purely a cinematographic affordance, but it does make sense because they cut time from the later parts of the book’s story and so cut the need for Abby to be so far away…
But the main thing I want to talk about is [Leah/Abby]’s parents’ divorce.
In the book, it’s Leah’s parents who are divorced because her dad cheated on her mom.
In the film, they instead combined this character trait from Leah into Abby’s backstory of moving from DC. (In the book, Abby’s dad and brother are still in DC but her dad is looking for a job in Georgia still).
And… I have mixed feelings about this. I’m not thrilled about the way that this makes Leah, who was already the most opaque character to me in the book, into an even less-fleshed-out character…
But I do admit that moving that moment onto Abby (and effectively moving Simon’s ‘I don’t really know people’ revelation from the book WAY earlier in the film) gives a little more weight to Simon choosing to come out to Abby before anyone else. There’s a moment of very obvious connection there, and I think that works in a medium where we don’t have moment-to-moment narration of Simon’s headspace.
While talking about Leah… I think her having a crush on Simon makes sense, but I’m also not sure I like the adaptational change because it DOES make the falling out feel like it’s based on Leah being upset Simon rebuffed her… Which isn’t REALLY supposed to be the text there, but that is how it came across to me. Though it does at least give Leah more concrete motives and characterisation. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Leah is the book character who needed a second book to flesh out.
Teachers
This is quick, but the vice-principal is, bar none, my LEAST favourite adaptational change. He feels like he exists to serve the sole purpose of separating Simon from his phone once, but they kept him around to just be a bit creepy and weird… I think the film would ONLY be enhanced by removing this character, even if that left Ms Albright as the ONLY staff member with any significant screentime.
Speaking of Ms. Albright… “She doesn’t like men.” … Okay, first of all, I think the book did a much better job with this, because I KNEW Ms. Albright was a lesbian from the book, despite the book never outright stating it. And I even think the dressing-down she gives the homophobes later in the film does a good job of that too. It doesn’t HAVE to be explicitly stated, it can be implied and that can be fine.
Ethan and Cal
I’m lumping these together (though I will mention Cal again later) because I think there’s an interesting juxtaposition.
First of all: I’m not 100% sure how I feel about Ethan… I think the lack of out gay (male) students at the school was an important facet of the book… But I don’t think adding a single gay student actually breaks the larger point being made with that. And I will admit that it does allow some more pointed conversations later in the film between them. I actually quite like the Simon-and-Ethan scenes after the homophobe stuff.
But on the flipside from Ethan, a character who wasn’t in the book… We have Cal, a character who was BARELY in the film. And this one is more confusing to me.
I think partially they just didn’t have the bandwidth to flesh Cal out as much as he was in the book (which, admittedly, wasn’t a HUGE amount even then…) They made him the pianist for the play, which got him out of the spotlight of being stage manager, and then only really had him interact with Simon once, after the outing.
But the reason I’m putting him alongside Ethan is because… the film outright cuts Cal being bi. Which is… weird to me. There are no canonically bi or lesbian characters in the film, which feels like a let down because the book does discuss the different social ‘acceptance’ of gay men, gay women, and bisexual people within the emails (both actual acceptance as well as the ‘lesbians are hot’ trope).
Martin and the blackmail
Martin feels a lot slimier of a character in the film… I think some of that is probably just SEEING him doing the things he does, because he actually really isn’t written THAT differently at all.
But the more interesting thing to me is that in the film, Simon is MUCH more willing in helping Martin than in the book.
Not to say he doesn’t help Martin in the book at all, but the book goes to great lengths to show Simon trying to avoid committing to helping him get Abby, and also has Martin feeling like he’s not helping ENOUGH…
In the film, Simon EXPLICITLY agrees early on to help Martin, and is generally a LOT more interventionist in his friend group. He’s more forceful about pushing Nick away from Abby.
Oh, also, Martin tagging along WITH Simon and his friends to the party, instead of just showing up at the address… Does actually plug a plothole from the book that didn’t need plugging. How did Martin know where Garrett’s house was in the book? It’s explicitly stated that SIMON doesn’t know it.
The Blues
I think that having Simon imagine each of the Blue candidates in the situations they described makes a lot of sense as an adaptational change. Because the film doesn’t take place in Simon’s first-person perspective, and the long descriptions of Bram’s fingers and legs, or Cal’s hair and eyes… just would not adapt well. So I do get it.
I also don’t entirely disagree with the decision to cut Simon lusting after his classmates physically from the film. It ends up a point of contention with Blue in the book (actually one that feels like it fizzles out rather than resolving) that Simon is attracted to Cal, and the way the plot was chopped and changed in the film wouldn’t have really left bandwidth for that plot point…
Also, given the cutting back of Cal’s character, I was surprised to see that he was still a Blue candidate.
And upgrading Lyle from a character who is LITERALLY mentioned twice in the book in passing to being a Blue candidate, someone who clearly knows who Simon is, and a romantic false-lead for Abby… I think that worked. I’m actually surprised how I like that adaptation…
Also Simon and Lyle are the most awkward people in the world.
OH! And I’m glad that the film cut the part where Simon spirals over whether Blue really is Martin or not. That was excruciating in the book, and I think that adapting that into the film wouldn’t have worked.
Bram, in particular.
Bram’s characterisation is different…
He’s less reserved in person in the film, and some of the things that were part of entire email exchanges in the book (Oreos, for instance)… are just part of his character in the film.
This is an adaptational change that makes sense, because as we said above, the film is working with a more limited time to characterise Blue and we need to actually have seen Bram and Simon interact earlier in the film because we lose the post-reveal interactions between them.
(Simon and Bram get together about 80% of the way through the book. In audiobook terms, they are together as a couple for about 90 minutes, almost the entire runtime of the film. So it makes sense that Bram would need characterising earlier in the film.)
That said, I think Bram being a bit more outgoing and talkative loses something… Because with the adapting out of Cal’s personality too… this kind of removes the underlying ‘type’ that Simon has. In every Blue candidate in the book, Simon likes their reservedness that’s hiding hidden depths. Even with Martin, Simon finds his awkwardness endearing more than his outspoken aspects…
Changes to The Reveal and Fallout.
So, this is the main thing that had to be changed. There is just too much plot in the back half of the book that just couldn’t ALL stay intact or in the order it happened in.
First of all: Martin outright publishing the screenshots instead of just a bizarre homophobic text post… makes sense, but it also drastically changes the PLOT of the second half in a way that I think is ultimately worse.
Secondly: Simon’s friends falling out with him AT the same time as the reveal is… not my favourite choice. I completely agree that in adapting the book they needed to condense the ebb and flow of people falling out… But I don’t overall like the fact that Simon is outed AND loses his friends in the span of a week.
That one comes back to Nick… I think that if Abby found out about Martin’s blackmail FROM Martin as in the book, Simon could have been spared Nick a little.
But the main adaptational changes I don’t really like in this regard… are about Blue.
By having Blue delete his email address after the outing, we lose a really interesting power dynamic between Simon and Blue that is the throughline for the second half of the book.
In the book, Simon gets outed without Blue being directly involved… And over the course of the middle of the book, it becomes clearer and clearer to Blue who Jacques is. So for much of the middle of the second half, Blue KNOWS who Simon is, but still can’t tell Simon who he is, and that leads to a lot of tension both ways.
We lose that in the film.
And moreso than that, we lose the privacy of Simon and Blue’s relationship.
Book!Blue would NOT have taken well to Simon declaring his love for Blue publicly on CreekSecrets and arranging very publicly a meetup that EVERYONE would attend.
And yes, obviously, their relationship is public pretty soon after they get together in the book too, but I feel like the hope and intimacy of the moment works so much better when the ‘I know you’ email is a private thing between them, and not a public declaration. Again: Book!Blue is much more reserved.
We also lose the final 20% of the book almost entirely. We don’t get to see Bram and Simon on dates, or just existing together as a couple or fooling around in the auditorium… And this is a sacrifice that is made in the film for runtime reasons and because the way film narratives climax doesn’t lend itself to a long dénouement… But it feels like a real loss, because ultimately SEEING Simon and Bram being together is the payoff for the several hours of seeing them making their way there.
Was this the right medium?
I don’t think that a film was the right way to adapt this story, ultimately.
The book is semi-epistolary. 13 of the first 26 chapters are JUST email exchanges between Jacques and Blue, and there are more emails later in the book too. The narrative of the book has multiple conflicts and resolutions throughout, underneath the overarching plot…
I think the best adaptation of this book was not as a 2-hour film. It would have been as a 3- or 4-hour series. The emails work as a framing device, a series would have allowed more room for narration and imagination spots, we could have seen more of EACH of the Blue candidates.
Obviously, a series would still have required significant rewrites and adaptation… You couldn’t have had the final episode be JUST Simon and Bram happy together, for instance, and I think you’d still have cut out Alice from the plot…
But I think that there are ways to rearrange the book into a series format that keeps the soul of the story a lot more coherently than the film did.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence on that front that the next story in this universe on screen was a series instead of a film.

New from Madame Shū Nǚ and the Celestial Temple of Harmony and Repose.
Madame Shu Nu's New You Drive-Through!
Are you having difficulty talking your loved ones into visiting a Celestial Temple Salon?
And even if you can, they still won't go because of the time a complete makeover can take, days, weeks, months even?
Or perhaps you want to change yourself but don't have the time for the full salon treatment.
Now thanks to a fantastic breakthrough, that is no longer the case.
Now it can all be done in the time it takes to get your car washed!
Just log on to our registration site, reserve a time, and type in the specific changes you want to take place and to whom in the car they will be aimed; all others in the vehicle not on the list will be unaffected; it’s best if the change is not the driver as the transformation can be quite startling, so someone else should be at the wheel after that.
After paying via Master Card, Visa, or Sino the Times Card, find the nearest Madame Shu Nu's New You Drive-Through booth, roll up to the sign-in pad, and put your assigned code in; the doors will open, and a conveyor belt will take your car and you in.
There, rays and harmonics will do their work, and thirty-four minutes later, it is all done!
Please note, because of the speed it being run by computers, and it being done by this new process, the results are often not the same as the slower way of transforming.  *
However, we are sure you will still be impressed with the results.
*  Fluctuations in age, height, the intensity of any implanted language, culture, or “style,” and other things can occur.
Tumblr media
You will be amazed, like when Mary June Summer rolled in.
Tumblr media
And Ma Jung-Soo rolled out. Ready for some kimchi, Ms Jung-Soo?!?
Tumblr media
Perhaps you want to go Vegan?
Tumblr media
That too can be done!
Tumblr media
And yes, we will admit the speed can lead to a bit of wonkiness, such as when Mrs. Francis Albright came in to become a Japanese school girl as a birthday gift for her husband (You go Fran!). But the computer hickuped and...
Tumblr media
She came out a very dedicated Japanese school teacher! (sorry no take backs, Furukawa Albright, it’s in the small print) husband Dave’s algebra skills however have never been better, and she swears that she’ll have him fluent in Japanese in no time.
Tumblr media
Mary Hawkens was so happy with her total Filipina makeover she knew what she had to do.
Tumblr media
See to it that a trip though the booth was bought for her mother, two sisters, and three aunts, because there is nothing more important in Filipino culture than family.
Tumblr media
Madame Shu Nu's New You Drive-Throughs, however, are not just for the young folks, just ask Billy McKeith and his BAE of 23 years Jane.
Tumblr media
Or as she is known now, McKeith Jie Bae.

[ On the one hand, 95% of his female relationships are either horrible exes, highly respected colleagues, or one of the select few human beings he actually cares about. Title: Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda
Author: Becky Albertalli
Number of Pages: 282
Rating: ★★★½☆
First published: 7 April 2015
Read: 9 July 2022 - 16 July 2022
Thoughts:
I really enjoyed this novel.
Simon is a fun and relatable protagonist.
I always love when the epistolary aspect comes to play. I suppose figuring out who Blue was is pretty easy, but I didn't suspect that character for even a minute.
Alice and Nora were entertaining characters (it kinda bothers me now that Simon has only one sister in the movie).
I didn't like Leah's attitude. Though I get why she's jelaous of Abby.
I get Ms. Albright intensity. I appreciated that she was very firm on her principles.
The one I couldn't feel much sympathy for was Martin. What he did was not right, period.
I read this book in Spanish and I have many complaints regarding the translation. It's very local. The vocabulary and the expressions only make sense in Spain (and I bet not in the whole country). It makes for a very tiresome reading. Is it really that hard to do a neutral translation? It's been a while since I encountered a translation like these one, but it reminded me how annoying they are. Also the word "alucinante" was used like a million of times.
Anyway, that book has something about it that brings me back to my años mozos.
(It made want to reread The Perks of Being a Wallflower).

dent’s eyebrow’s shot up. the woman sitting across from him had just witnessed to a heated phone call ( embarrassing to say the least , to lose his temper in front of someone who was less than an acquittance to him ) between him and an arkham spokesperson. her observation, however, had caught harvey off guard. something about it felt ominous and the district attorney couldn’t help but wonder if ms. albright was trying to threaten him. a cog in his brain, rusty and faulty, clicked the wrong way; perhaps he ought to bare his teeth at her, bark something back, SHOW HER THAT HE WAS NOT TO BE MESSED WITH. but harvey sat back and slid one of his hands into one of his blazer’s pockets.
there she was ; a silver dollar .
the moment he brushed his thumb over the coin, that ugly thought was tamed. lately it had become hard to ignore that part of him   ──   a violent fury dent had, no doubt, inherited from his father’s side. but he dealt with it the only way he knew how; by putting on his best vote-winning smile and deescalating.   “  ──  perhaps you ought to look into changing your major, ms. albright. you certainly seem to have a future in the psychiatric field . ”   he joked. harvey dent looked comfortable in his office chair, but in the depths of his pocket, his fingers continued to nervously turn and squeeze that coin. HIS COIN.    “ i’m sorry you had to hear that. i’m, uh, ”   his smile faltered for a second. “ i’ve got it under control . ” but, just like that, it came back, wide and confident and warm, dent looked like a guy you could trust your life with. a moment of silence arose between them as dent looked into becky’s hazel eyes.

Gabriel Post Chapter Nine
Tumblr media
The first of the post chapter shorts is up and if you talked to Gabriel after all that, here is a bit more to that resolution. :)
