Whats the difference between lichen, moss, mould and mushrooms if they're all fungus? Aren't they all the same sorta thing?
so, interestingly, all of these groups are very different !! instead of naming the differences, let me quickly explain what exactly these organisms are.
lichen :
lichens are symbiotic organisms, meaning they are in themselves the product of a relationship between different organisms. to simplify it, lichens are big part fungus, & smaller part algae (protista) or cyanobacteria (monera). these different forms of life together create lichen, which grows on trees, rocks, leaves, mosses & sometimes other lichens !! to read more about lichens, check out @/lichenaday's blog :-)
moss :
mosses are actually not fungi at all !! they are small, flowerless plants. they grow on trees & in soil. :-)
mould :
mould is a type of structure that fungi can form - it is entirely fungal. it reproduces through airborne spores :-) there are many different types of mould ; some are toxic, some are used medicinally, & some are saprotrophs. (note : slime moulds & water moulds are unrelated to fungal moulds !!)
mushrooms :
so, lots of people think mushrooms are a species of fungus, but they are not. "mushroom" refers to the fruiting body of a fungus ; what a mushroom is to a fungus is comparable to what a flower is to a tree - the part that reproduces !! not all fungi produce mushrooms (e.g. moulds, which do not have fruiting bodies as the entire organism is able to release spores). there are currently only 14 000 discovered fungi that produce mushrooms !! more fungi that don't produce mushrooms include mildew, yeast & lichen.
so, yes !! they're all quite different in structure, cells & function in the ecosystem.

You know that one post going around which was like yeah if you feel bad check for mould and gas leaks, stuff like that.
Friendly reminder to my chronically ill fuckers out there to do that
Tumblr media
It is meant to be white. All that black stuff is mold.
I have been feeling constantly sick for months. I have had a runny nose since September. I recently developed migraines for the first time.
I wrote all of it off as just Symptoms.
We suspect this has been a steadily growing problem for years. Years. As a frequently bed bound cripple who uses my air-conditioner every single day, I have been flooded with mould for potentially years.
I had no idea.
We only checked because it was leaking.
(Which, it had been for like months. I put off asking my dad to help because of my hoarding problem, he couldn't get there. But thankfully I am getting help now and my floor is clear for the first time in a long time. Do not repeat my mistakes.)
When other people get sick and it does not go away, it is a sign something is wrong. When we think we know what is wrong and that it is an internal problem, we do not have those same warnings about our environment.
I suggest checking those places around your home that are damp and susceptible to mould. Or getting a friend to. Make some fun of it, check everyone's house for mould!
I suggest if you get new symptoms to consider if maybe it's an environmental thing.
Just like. Especially for us, this sort of stuff can be catastrophic. Many of us immunocompromised.
Please be safe y'all
Learn from my mistakes

FOTD #075 : hat thrower! (pilobolus crystallinus)
hat thrower mould (or dung cannon mould) is a type of bonnet mould in the family of pilobolaceae. sprouting from cattle dung, this fungus grows in six stages, which you can read about here. (link)
the big question : can i bite it?? likely not - but there have been no reports so far.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
p. crystallinus description :
"this fungus is small, clear & crystal-like. their heads are teardrop-shaped, with a round black tip. they are covered in droplets."
[images : source & source] [fungus description : observation-based]
"fun fact : the reason its names are based on projectile attributes is because of its ability to 'spit' it's little black part off !!"
