We have been slowly venturing out of the house - in low traffic stores like @kohls or (my fave) @michaelsstores. ⁣ ⁣ I would have never guessed that THIS would be our new normal. New lessons I’ve learned while parenting in a pandemic: ⁣ 😷 I’m a Karen. And while my husband reminds me I should just turn around when I see someone without a mask and hold my tongue, sometimes I can’t help it. I want to experience “normal” things with my baby and I can’t do that comfortably if we all can’t respect each other with a mask. ⁣ 😷 Baby wearing is awesome! It allows me to hold my baby close (and keep him away from curious strangers) while still being hands-free. (So far, the @mobywrap has been our favorite!)⁣ 😷 Getting out of the house is a whole experience for my baby - he quietly observes EVERYTHING while at home he would be whining for the next activity! ⁣ ⁣ What have you learned about parenting during this time? Previous foster parent to the boys' older brother, also in his preadoptive home. Therapist mom is complex trauma expert, clinician & professor. Artist mom is former social worker turned web designer. We blog about the intersections of #transracialadoption #fostercare #LGBTparenting. We microblog our day-to-day here (IG) & aim to let our anonymous photos do the bulk of our storytelling. We are advocates for reunification, attachment-focused parenting & social justice. We keep doing what we're doing because we think it's important & that sentiment keeps getting reinforced by you all. We are so grateful for the positive exposure during #fostercareawarenessmonth. The heavy. In our home we are straddling two worlds. On the one hand we are a family of four who have not yet fully lived as a family of four since finalizing adoption last year. We are turning the corner toward that life & feel the seismic shift daily. We are worn. On the other hand we are transitioning our biggest kiddo into her preadoptive family & moving through our collective big feelings that come along with such a thing. We are knowingly separating siblings just as we knew at the onset this would be the outcome. But we remained steadfast & hopeful that the best possible outcomes would arrive for all 4 kiddos we have grown to love fiercely over the last several years. In the absence of their birth family and families of origin, whom we hope will show up if appropriate, we have stepped in to fill a lifelong gap through adopting from foster care. We say that not to toot our horns or raise our great white hope flags, but to state that we are here doin the work. Learning. Loving. Expanding. Through all that feels wholly unfair or otherwise, we stand here in the gap, holding our own individual & collective hopes for a future & a life worth celebrating in its many complexities & shades of beauty. Pretty much. This is pretty much what motherhood looks like for me on a regular basis - sitting on the floor, kids begging to sit on me then immediately running away, me in my ripped jeans, almost certainly laughing. We laugh a LOT these days with these wild, chatty, and clever boys. (Huge thanks to @chantellewattphoto for capturing us so perfectly.) . I found out I was pregnant on Mother's Day 3 years ago. Despite what then felt like a lifetime of waiting and trying to have a baby, I took the plunge and took a pregnancy test alone at home on Mother's Day. It could have ended badly, but I had a feeling it wouldn't. Call it mother's intuition? . Motherhood is NOTHING like I expected it to be before I had kids. I have laughed at myself so many times for doing all the things I said I'd never do, like letting my kids watch TV. I turned out to be a much more laid back mom in some areas, and waaaaaaay more uptight than I anticipated in others. . I've surprised myself with my own physical strength over these past 3 years, and I haven't worked out more than a handful of times in that time period. . I've also become much softer - physically and emotionally - and I've learned to accept and love that about myself, too (most days). . I've figured out that I don't make a very good stay at home mom, that I lose my patience more quickly when I'm not working outside of our home, and that I'm a way better mom when I'm pursuing my career dreams. I don't feel as guilty about all of that anymore, but it took a lot of time to get here. . Reflecting on who I was, who I have come to be, and who I am becoming as a woman, wife and mom is something I try to do often because I always end up surprised at what I learn about myself. .
