Day 5 - Read a Fic From 2020

I went back to the RWRB archives to find a 2020 fic and ended up reading two!

If You Hold Me Without Hurting Me, You’ll Be the First Who Ever Did by cmere (RWRB, Firstprince, E)

This is a lovely fic set at the lakehouse on the first night. It's hot, sweet, tender and just a little bit angsty (knowing what comes next). I really love how Alex's fun-loving, free side is perceived by Henry who is feeling all the walls close in around him.

Breathing Together by MOssPiglet (RWRB, Firstprince, M)

This is a very sweet fic (also set in Texas!) with Henry being comforted by Alex in a less typical way (i.e. Alex is actually quiet for a change). It also has such a stellar line: 'But if love was a cure for omnipresent anxiety, psychiatric pharmaceuticals would be way less profitable.' PREACH.

tw: homophobia, slurs, misogyny, suicide mention

i'm not sure if i'd want to support KatieIsGod. i saw their toyhouse (mosspiglets, report link in case if they change their username) because they are selling their characters, nothing wrong with that. i checked their art tab and i browsed around as i liked their style and i found art of a character called Alvine. in the art, the character says the f-slur. i checked the character's page and it got even worse.

... and the despair was enough for him to throw himself straight into the hive in a failed attempt to "become an hero."

for those of you who don't know, to "become an hero" is saying that someone is going to commit suicide/commited suicide. (more information here) the character's page also has some misogyny ("all women are whores"). before any of you tell me how this character is based off the stereotypical incel and is (likely) meant to be a joke, yes, i can see that. what i don't get is why someone would make a character like that. let's not glorify incels and make them seem like good people.

i don't see why there's a need for the character to use homophobic slurs. yes i know, you'll tell me that's what incels do and okay, fine. it's just that if you'd make a racist character who throws the n-slur around like it's nothing and then you'd insist that you're not a racist, but the character is, i wouldn't trust you and i'd believe you're using that character as a way to be racist anyway. it's a similar situation here, if you have a homophobic character, i'm just going to assume you're a homophobe too, you're just claiming "it's just the character", but i will not believe it.

i'm just tired of all the homophobia and other crap around, ""joke"" or not. these things are not something to joke about.
