My favourite reads of 2020:
According to my goodreads account, 2020 has been an excellent year for reading. (A bit self-explenatory - considering the circumstances.) Thought I’d have a look at which of the books I read I would like to recommend. I felt some books more keenly than the other ones, of course. Many of them have a message I especially like:
1. Björnstad / Us against you: Two parts of a series of which I’m eagerly awaiting the third book. They consist of several interesting stories and characters. At the heart of it all is a hockey-team, their victories and their losses. It is a story of a town so far north that the forrest keeps eating at it, one house at the time. It is about how most of the people living there need to reajust their attitudes and how hard it can be to change.
2. Hør her’a: Best feel-good book of the year, even if it touched upon som impactful themes and questions. The main character, Mahmoud of 15, gets a visit from his pakistani uncle and has to guide him through Oslo. This allows the reader a look into his perception of the city, of “Norwegian Norwegians” and also into his neighbourhood. Mahmouds ponders some important questions on culture and identity. There are very clear obstacles in his way, but I like how it ends well. I don’t know if it’s a realistic ending, but I loved it even so.
3. Not forgetting the whale:  Maybe I liked this one so much because it deals with a pandemic and felt so recognisable to our own situation this year. I love dystopic books, but this one managed to make me feel good as well as describing a form of apocalypse. The key to that was the unexpected factor that solved everything in the end. A perfect read for 2020.
4. Min mormor hälsar och säger forlåt:  A real fairy-tale for grown ups, this one. I am amazed at how a grown man was able to write this wisely about mother-daughter-relations, about grandmothers and their grandchildren. The events of the book are both tragic and difficult for a seven year-old to deal with, but Elsa gradually discovers how her grandmothers fairy-tales all had some truth to them. And she learns that she actually has some of the bravest, most interesting characters from those stories present in her life.
5. Glasshjerte: The last 5-star rating om my list this year is definitely more than crime-fiction. It has beautiful descriptions, especially those seen through the eyes of mentally disabled Robin. The relation between him and his brother, Mikkel gives heart to the book. I also liked the investigatiors dealing with their own problems, one hypocondriac and one convicted fellon. A surprising, yet melancolly conclusion to it all made an extra impression on me.

Why is your favourite book your favourite book?
Hmm.. My favourite book is my favourite book because it feels so real in describing humans and their social connections, the story is beautiful and it's tied together nicely at the end. You feel uplifted and enriched. But it also doesn't feel fake or like looking through a rose-tinted glass, it's so real in what life means. Ups and downs. And then of course, all of this written with SUCH beautiful language. *mwah*

9,12 and 20 pleaaase!, and if you had to choose between writing angst and fluff, what would u choose and why?
9:(This is also a hard one because I have a whole playlist with songs) (I don’t know which fic you wanted to know about so I will just say Showstoppers). I would say that it could be “I was an island” by Allison Weiss but I have like 10 others songs I also would say that they fit.
12: Fredrik Backman, I especially like his book “My Grandmother Sends her Regards and Apologises” (or in swedish: “Min mormor hälsar och säger förlåt)”
20: I don’t know really know,
And for the last question I would chose fluff. I can write a whole fic just with fluff but I wouldn’t be able to do that with only angst. I would rather take teeth rotting fluff than hurt no comfort.

Hey, sorry to pop in from out of the blue, but as a fellow newbie to the magical readathon I was super excited to see your TBR. Anyway I was wondering about the title My Grandmother Sends Her Regards. I think it's the same Backman book I read last year that was titled My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She's Sorry. I'm American so I assume that's the American title, is your copy an American translation or is this a whole new side of the publishing industry I know nothing about?
Hi there fellow booklover! :) You are correct that they are one and the same book. I suppose the differing titles are a preference of publishers. My copy, bought in the Czech republic and imported from the UK, was published by Sceptre books. The original title is “Min mormor hälsar och säger förlåt” and my translator did this with it: “My grandmother says hello and says sorry” which would put it closer to “my” edition´s name.
(The one I got is actually fun. I can always switch the word “Grandmother” for “the Lannisters”. :D )

Only thing was that he forgot that there was a roof over the door and he threw me straight into it. Instead of catching me he was so shocked he watched me hit my head then fall onto the pavement where I laid and didn’t move for a long ass time. My dad told me about what he was thinking in that moment and he was thinking about how he was gonna tell my mum about this. Lucky for him I woke up and cried/yelled because of how much it hurt. My mum still doesn’t know that it happened.
I’m tagging the best person on the planet @littlesqu1sh and the loml @kiominkio

Sooo, a long, long time ago (but not a whole year at least) I was tagged by the lovely @stolligaseptember! // I’m starting to catch a cold so I’ve got no energy to study so yeah, look what kind of things I’m catching up on doing instead :) //
Rules: tag 9 people with excellent taste: to avoid tagging pretty much the same people as I did earlier today and let them catch a break, let’s say that if you’re reading this and feel like doing it I’m absolutely tagging you! :)
Colour(s) I’m currently wearing: Some kind of greyish beige or something, I have no idea, as well as grey, white and black. Not even my socks are colourful, what is this!?
Last band I saw live: Flogging Molly! They were so so good! Actually I thought about answering this some weeks ago but by then I hadn’t been at a concert for like years so I decided to wait ‘til after I saw Molly…
Last song I listened to: The price of a mile by Sabaton, before that it was the full swedish Talespin theme song and before that the song Reser fast jag inte vill from a swedish musical I’d love to see. I think this illustrates my diverse taste in music in a lovely way (although there’s a lot of my preferred genres missing)
Lipstick or chapstick: Chapstick
Last movie I watched: I think it was Mission Impossible: Ghost protocol
Last 3 TV shows I watched: Backstrom, Scooby-Doo, where are you! and uuh, BBC’s Big Cats maybe? (if you like nature documentaries I highly recommend it! If you’re swedish it’s called Världens natur: Katternas planet and you can see the second episode on SVT Play for two more days)
Last YouTube video I watched:  Daniel Radcliffe Answers the Web's Most Searched Questions
3 characters I identify with: Newt Scamander, Robert Nilsson (The Emigrants novels/the musical Kristina from Duvemåla) and the Hemul (Moomins). Although I must say I sadly haven’t read a lot of Moomin books so I don’t really know, but he adores flowers and sometimes wanders around in caves and I just feel like yeah, you and me both love
Books I’m currently reading: Oh. Oh. Okay. Lets’ see, well there’s the Sands of time (the Hermux Tantamoq adventures) which I read somewhat regularly. And sometimes, but not particularly often, I read Rån och inga visor (the little old lady behaving badly) and Små citroner gula (small yellow lemons). And I sporadically read (aka even less than the books I don’t read particularly often) Utvandrarna (the Emigrants), En stund på Jorden (A time on earth), Min mormor hälsar och säger förlåt (My grandmother asked me to tell you she’s sorry), Trollkarlens hatt (Finn family moomintroll), Kalle Blomkvist – Mästerdetektiven lever farligt (Bill Bergson lives dangerously), Kalle Blomkvist och Rasmus (Bill Bergson and the White Rose Rescue) and The Book Thief. I think that’s most of them? But alas, who knows, I can’t keep up with all the books I’m currently reading. For someone that doesn’t read that often I sure read a lot of different books.
Oh and wait, I’m also currently reading Life: The science of biology and  Introduktion till mikrobiologi: med inriktning mot naturvetare och farmaceuter (something like: “An introduction to microbiology: for scientists and pharmacists”). Which is, surprise surprise, the two books I read most regularly of all the ones mentioned.

Tumblr media

anna’s endless book list— min mormor hälsar och säger förlåt (my grandmother asked me to tell you she’s sorry) • fredrik backman
But that’s just it with all of the heroes at the end of all the stories always meant to live happily ever after. And it becomes problematic, it does, pure narrative technique. Because everyone in stories who has lived out all their days leaves others behind who have to live their days without them.

I love how american publishers have to extend swedish titles to eternity and sometimes even change the meaning.
Män Som Hatar Kvinnor (Men Who Hate Women) = The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Why? Just why.)
Min Mormor Hälsar och Säger Förlåt = My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry (caused by the lack of the word “hälsar” in this context in English)
Björnstad = Beartown / The Scandal (English doesn’t actually put words together like Swedish does, it’s why they react so strongly to German, so it should be “Bear Town” and the other one....)
Kim Novak Badade Aldrig i Genesarets Sjö = The Summer of Kim Novak (Okay, here the original is way longer but it’s also better)

reading challenge ‘17
the year is coming to an end and it’s time to tell you about the books i read in 2017. i used popsugar’s challenge - the link is unfortunately not valid anymore so it looks like they removed it from their site - and ended up reading only 27 of the 40 mandatory prompts, and i never even got started on my list for the 12 advanced prompts. i’m not unhappy though, and next year i’ll do my best to finish a full list. if you’ve found any good reading challenges - hit me up!
strikethrough means i didn’t read, italics means i didn’t enjoy it, and bold are the ones i recommend. sometimes there is commentary. i apologise.
huckleberry finns äventyr (the adventures of huckleberry finn) - mark twain
maskrosungen - sandra gustafsson
ett öga rött - jonas hassen khemiri if you’re from sweden and interested in how language evolves: children it is time to read this book. i don’t think it was ever published in english and even if it was the reading experience just wouldn’t be the same.
under all denna vinter - negar naseh
djävulen hjälpte mig - caroline eriksson
sverigedemokraternas svarta bok
playground - lars kepler i was never a huge kepler fan but like. it’s obvious that they are so used to the same main throughout many books because they give us NO time to get used to this main and the people around her so when her kid was close to death i literally didn’t care because there was no sentimental bond between the two of them or them and me.
min katt jugoslavien - pajtim statovic
hypnotisören - lars kepler
the shining - stephen king
som zlatan fast bättre - niclas christoffer
påven johanna - donna cross no offense but this book fucked me up the ass without lube and i said thank you. i was in south africa when i read this and i didn’t give a shit about goddamn white rhinoceroses or whatever, i just wanted to finish this book but also never put it down in my lifetime and i think i might get it surgically attached to my body.
äventyr i svenssonland: seriemördaren peter mangs - joakim palmkvist
frågor jag fått om förintelsen - hédi fred
kejsarn av portugallien - selma lagerlöf
harry potter og de vises stein (harry potter and the sorcerer’s stone) - j k rowling
kaffe med rån - catharina ingelman-sundberg
svarta fanor - august strindberg
förvandlingen (die verwandlung) - franz kafka
around the world in 80 days - jules verne wow to be a celebrated classic this was fucking boring?
near death - e r kitchen
norrland - po tidholm
månen tur och retur - hergé
sapiens - en kort historik över mänskligheten (קיצור תולדות האנושות, sapiens - a brief history of humankind)- yuval noah harari
sherlock holmes, en studie i rött (a study in scarlet) - arthur conan doyle
till esmé - j d salinger i can’t believe the writer of fucking THE CATCHER IN THE RYE wrote this. i loved it. he had to find some way of paying his debts to the world for creating holden caulfield i guess
miss peregrines hem för besynnerliga barn (miss peregrine’s home for peculiar children) - random riggs
follow the rabbit proof fence - doris pilkington
min mormor hälsar och säger förlåt - fredrik backman
främlingen d. 1 (outlander pt. 1) - diana gabaldon

magisterlekarna - kristoffer folkhammar WHEN I DOWNLOADED THIS I WAS NOT EXPECTING GAY BDSM BUT THAT’S WHAT I GOT :)
ett gräseligt spektakel - j k nelson
närmare - fredrik nyström i can’t say this was good or bad because i don’t fucking remember it. i crossed it out on my list but i have no memory of ever picking up this book so. probably not memorable then

19:23
Bergman opera. Sjätte sinnet. Opera på svenska. Jag har inga ord.
22:52
Teatrar, museum, musik.
