Hello! I just recently entered the Attack on Titan fandom and I just read all of your fics. I just have to say I’m a huge fan. May i ask for some of your ReiKasa headcanons in the It’s Gotta Be You universe? I really love that fic and I’m so interested if there is any awkwardness between Historia, Eren, Reiner, and Mikasa. Thanks!
Hello Nonnie~ Before anything else, a hearty welcome is in order for your recent endeavor in the AoT/SnK fandom. WELCOME, MY FRIEND! <3 I hope you’ll love the positive side of this fandom. I am very, very honored that you read all my fics, considering they’re a super rarepair! BUT with the recent canon developments, I must say the curiosity is a very welcomed change :)
I had an amazing time writing It’s Gotta Be You, mainly because it’s in Modern AU/HS AU, in which the latter universe was created personally by Mr. Hajime Isayama himself. Thank you so much for sending in an ask for the headcanons, I’m so happy that you enjoy the story. Read on more for your reading pleasure, lovely:

ReiKasa Headcanons
Universe: It’s Gotta Be You (SnK HS AU & Modern AU)
Pt. 2 Available Here
Four days before he departed for Hizuru from Marley, Reiner took a flight again to Paradis for a personal visit to the Jeagers’ household in Shinganshina. Reiner even brought flowers for Mrs. Jeager. Grisha told Reiner about the day he brought Mikasa home from Hizuru after her parents’ passing and how he constantly worries about his foster daughter. Grisha and Carla gave Reiner their blessings, after seeing how genuine and an honest gentleman the young soldier was. Apparently, at Eren and Historia’s wedding, both Dr. Jeager and Mrs. Jeager had already suspected that the handsome blonde-haired young man was the ‘mysterious quarterback boy’ in the picture that a younger Mikasa had kept hidden in her nightstand’s drawer and the reason why Mikasa never dated anyone during and even after completing medical school.
As soon as Reiner’s all settled down in his new deployment in Akita, Hizuru, he and Mikasa began dating immediately. Akita’s a pretty remote area so instead of the usual city courtship style, Reiner would come by to her house during her nights when she’s off duty, make dinner for her and spend the rest of the evening watching DVDs of classic movies that Mrs. Jeager sent. His favorite: The Breakfast Club (lol) and hers: Casablanca. Also, according to Reiner, they technically dated each other in high school but never made it official so this time, he’s in it to win it. (his words)
Reiner’s an amazing cook (the one good skill he inherited from his father) so breakfast in bed is frequent whenever he stays overnight since Mikasa always had to sleep in after long shifts at the Medical Centre. Mr. Midnight still hates him but as soon as Reiner’s married to Mikasa, Reiner became his new best friend.
Reiner & Mikasa would usually sneak some time from their off days - which they coordinate to make sure they coincide with each other - and go on morning jogs or night walks together. Once a month, on an early Sunday morning, Reiner would take Mikasa on a bike ride (Harleys in Hizuru, anyone? xD) towards the other countrysides in Hizuru, experiencing the local delicacies and sometimes just catching the sunset at one of the neighbouring village’s rice field or by the seaside.
It was a beautiful night with starry skies and falling snowdrops when Reiner proposed to Mikasa on top of the hill overlooking Suzukoya no Mori during one of their weekly night walks. The first person they called to share the news of their engagement was Reiner’s mother, Karina. She was over the moon! Reiner’s cousin Gabi screamed through the video call and immediately volunteered herself for the flower girl duties.
They only share the news of their engagement to her foster family two weeks later during that year’s Christmas dinner with the Jeagers. Everyone present was surprised but in a good way absolutely, especially Eren and Historia! Historia loves Mikasa so much that she offered to help with Reiner and Mikasa’s wedding preparations, while Eren was already pre-booking a romantic cruise package for the couple’s honeymoon while they were still at the dinner table!
Historia and Reiner broke up way back in high school, not too long before Reiner and Mikasa grew close to each other after Ms. Rico arranged them to be lab partners in her Physics class. So there wasn’t much awkwardness as they all grew into adulthood. If anything, Historia makes it a point to bully Reiner as the ‘bigger’ sister-in-law of the family at every opportunity available :)
The awkward moment only happened when Levi and Petra invited the newly-engaged couple to their home in Trost for a New Year’s eve dinner. Reiner couldn’t look at their former Discipline teacher in the eyes but Uncle Kenny made it a point to give a toast to welcome Reiner into their family in advance. Levi though, was being dead serious when he said he’ll break Reiner’s neck if he so much hurt Mikasa’s feelings or break her heart.
Eren was the one who got super drunk during Reiner’s stag party. Reiner and Zeke ended up having to carry Eren’s drunken ass back to the hotel on the eve of Reiner & Mikasa's wedding. They had a destination wedding at one of the hill resorts in the Azumabito family’s estate in both traditional Hizuru customs and modern vow exchanging ceremony. Sasha was the maid of honor and Bertolt was the best man. Kiyomi Azumabito, first cousins with Mikasa’s late mother, hosted the wedding venue and arrangements. Grisha gave Mikasa away and Eren gave the wedding toast, because the best man panicked and passed out because he was so nervous. Reiner & Mikasa’s first dance was to the tune of Russell Dickerson’s Yours.
When Historia gave birth to her and Eren’s daughter, Helena, 4 months after Reiner & Mikasa’s wedding, she was the one who asked Reiner to “hurry up and give Helena a cousin already!” while nudging at her sister-in-law who helped deliver her baby. The couple just laughed it off, saying that they were in no rush.
Turns out they’ve been expecting for six weeks at that point in time and decided to wait until Mikasa’s past her first trimester to break the news to their families. But when Reiner had to take a week long sick leave due to a suspicious ‘food poisoning’ from Karina’s cooking, Karina deduced two and two together.
Apparently, Reiner had Couvade Syndrome, for the whole 30 weeks of pregnancy. Poor guy but he soldiered through like a champion. When their twins, Rémy and Miraé, were born 32 weeks later, every single pain and discomfort was worth it. Well, nothing can be compared to Mikasa’s 10 hour labor though.
Eren, Historia and Zeke helped Reiner and Mikasa prepare the twins’ nursery and managed to get everything ready in time before the babies come home. All the Jeagers, Ackermans, Brauns and Azumabito family members threw a surprise welcoming party for the new parents and babies. Helena had not one but two new cousins at the same time. While Armin and Annie are the twins’ godparents.
I had fun writing this headcanon & I hope you’ll enjoy it too! Thank you so much for sending in the ask, sweet Nonnie. Take care & stay safe! Please do keep a lookout for more headcanons soon <3
xoxo,

Okay so I have an anime crossover issue:
I am watching and LOVING the Fruits Basket reboot. And I am also a long-time lover of OHSHC. And it occurred to me that, while crossovers are often very cringey, the opportunities between these two shows, if handled correctly, work like a dream. And there ARE plenty of FBxOHSHC fanfics out there.
The problem?
Hardly any of them seem to take proper advantage of the opportunities presented. The largest percentage of fic I’ve seen can be placed into one of two camps: “look at my OC she’s the secret 14th zodiac member and she goes to Ouran” or “Haruhi is actually a sohma and the secret 14th Zodiac member”
First off: look—there is no wolf in the Chinese zodiac. There is no fox, or raven, or jaguar, or—just, stop.
Second of all, there’s plenty of new ways to play with this crossover concept that are lots of fun to read—because they don’t have to change the rules of either universe!
(also, why do the Sohmas always have to go to Ouran? Can’t it be the other way around? I’m just saying, as sweet as Tohru is, she is canonically nowhere close to winning any sort of scholarship to attend school at Ouran, even if the sohma boys do.)
Imagine, if you will, some of the following scenarios:
Tamaki, in one of his usual bids for host club bonding and commoner research, arrange for the host club to attend a commoner high school for a month. In order to convince Kyoya to come with, Tamaki specifically chooses a high school that is attended by members of the influential-yet-hermit-level-elusive Sohma family. Once they’re there, of course, Tamaki wastes no time establishing a place for the host club to continue their activities, because beauty must be shared with the world, of course!!! From there, imagine some of these scenarios:
1: Tamaki hears of the school’s Prince, and seeks out Yuki in order to induct (or, more accurately, abduct) him into the Host Club whether he likes it or not. (On that note, imagine how the Prince Yuki fan club might react to the Host Club’s presence).
2: Contrariwise, Tamaki knows of the Prince, but is more interested in the school’s aloof Tsudere Type, Kyo. Cue Kyo being incredibly angry and flustered as Tamaki and the twins keep kidnapping him to try and induct him. Possibly include Tamaki noticing kyo’s feelings for Tohru and deciding to coach him on how to be a true gentleman.
3: Imagine Shigure’s reaction to EITHER of those events.
4: in a different or perhaps related chain of events, imagine Tamaki meeting Ayame, essentially adopting him as his senpai, and the learning about his estranged relationship with Yuki. The Tamaki Suoh we know would immediately commence Operation Brotherly Reconciliation before you could blink.
5: imagine after establishing the Commoner High School Host Club, Momiji decides this looks fun and wants to hang out there. They don’t take him on as a host, since they already have Hunny, but he’s still happy to have made a bunch of new friends! And the best part is!!! They’re all guys!!!! And they’re (almost) all emotionally available!!! Which means he can hug them without restraint!!! He hugs Hunny! He hugs Tamaki!!! He thinks about hugging Kyoya but second guesses himself!!! He hugs Haruh—wait.
6: immediately after point number 5, Kyo and Yuki are rapidly switching between panicked and confused. While Yuki and Haruhi are basically Spider-Man-pointing at each other saying “Explain????” Kyo does one of two things:
7: he blurts out something relevant but woefully poorly contexted to Haruhi like “WAIT HOLD ON TAKE OFF YOUR SHIRT.” Which elicits a violent reaction from the twins/Tamaki which is headed off by Kyoya/Mori.
8: he grabs Momiji and starts shaking and yelling at him for being stupid and Hunny’s affection for a) his new friend and b) cute bunnies translates into him twisting Kyo’s arm or otherwise kicking his butt to take Momiji away from him because remember, kids! “picking on [Hunny’s] friends is a no-no!”
9: Kyo is dumbstruck because wait this twerp knows martial arts? Cue a running joke/side arc throughout the story in which Kyo keeps trying to get Hunny to fight him because getting beaten up by a twerp is stupidly emasculating and Kyo needs to win back his pride. Meanwhile Hunny sees no reason to fight or indulge Kyo and keeps refusing him (you know..because he’s actually a mature 18 year old). The arc may end in Kyo learning to humble himself and asking Hunny if he could maybe teach him some moves? Followed by Hunny beaming at him and saying yes.
10: how would Kyoya react if he were to learn the Sohma secret? How would he negotiate with the Sohma family? Could he? What stops Hatori from wiping their memories, if anything?
11: How would HARUHI react? Miss “Believes in nothing paranormal?” How would Tamaki react? As the King of Sticking His Nose Into Your Business, he may attempt to make it his mission to break the curse. (Of course, he fails in the end, but they all become friends anyway.)
OR, perhaps they don’t even need to go to the same school at all. Imagine this:
1: Kyoya, in preparation for running some of his family’s hospitals, or perhaps as part of a special inspection, or a possible acquisition, or whatever else, visits a hospital owned by the Sohmas
(Listen, we know that the sohma’s HAVE to own at least one hospital. Preparations for any possible Zodiac birth would have to be EXTENSIVE. Imagine if they’re anticipating a new Dragon? All Sohma women are now compelled to have water births. Why? BECAUSE SCIENCE SAYS SO, SHUT UP, WE’RE DOCTORS. Once the new Dragon’s been born? NEVERMIND NO MORE WATERBIRTHS DONT ASK QUESTIONS. They have veterinarians on call who never really know for sure why they’re paid to just keep a special phone on them, but one day they’re called into a human hospital and forced to sign a huge stack of NDA’s before being brought to a delivery room. One day when he’s training his replacement the kid asks “hey why are you making me read about how to care for baby seahorses?” And the older doctor gets faraway flashback eyes, shakes his head and says “just keep reading, son.” I could honestly go on. I would read an entire fic just about the people working at one of these hospitals.)
Anyway, Kyoya is at the Sohma hospital when something curse related happens. You can honestly pick. Either way, Kyoya goes through an interesting spiral:
2: first, after getting himself the fuck out of there as soon as Hatori’s eyes are off of him, he has a barely-self contained nervous breakdown the minute he gets himself alone in his room because the idea of Kyoya instantly accepting anything remotely fantastical is ridiculous. His friends are worried about him but have no idea what happened because if Kyoya vocalizes it, that means it’s real!!!! And he!!! Just can’t!!! Also, he REALLY doesn’t need the twins teasing him and calling him insane or Haruhi asking if he has a fever.
3: then, after he collects himself, he begins doing his Kyoya thing and collecting information. Obviously a condition (he refuses to call it a curse) with such a easily exploitable trigger couldn’t have been kept a secret for so long. So the Sohma’s are keeping people quiet somehow. There isn’t any history of people disappearing around the sohma’s, so it’s either money, threats, or induced amnesia. So, of course, Kyoya prepares for all three. (Of course, even if they WANTED to kidnap or kill Kyoya, his connection to the Ootori family and its extensive police force would prevent that.)
4: and still, even if this curse idea is utterly ridiculous—and it is—this is the biggest piece of negotiation material Kyoya has ever acquired, and its on the SOHMAS. The one family that almost never deals with anyone. With the sohma’s being such a powerful yet reclusive family, he’s not about to let such a large chip go that easily.
5: cue a delightful mental cat-and-mouse game between Kyoya, Hatori, and eventually Akito. Akito getting involved means Shigure is definitely involved as well, if he isn’t already after Hatori.
6: Akito, being a very impatient person, wants Kyoya either hypnotized or under their thumb YESTERDAY. But he knows he can’t just bring him to the house without raising many important eyebrows. So what is he to do to get Kyoya to cooperate?
7: they could go for the heart, perhaps. Kyoya’s best friend Suoh seems stupid enough. Akito begins to charm Tamaki (who Kyoya has not informed of the curse) and establish a sort of power play in front of Kyoya—“see, he likes me, I can get him to go anywhere I want.”
8: Contrariwise, Akito decides they can’t target his best friend Suoh for the same reasons he can’t target Kyoya. Oh, but...look here. A commoner named Fujioka with no money or status, hardly any family....he’ll do fine.
7: if Tamaki gets in a room alone with Akito, the dynamic could get interesting. After Akito turns scary, Tamaki might take a bit of a beating, but then (as the bighearted and surprisingly wise person he is) he starts talking to Akito, and trying to genuinely connect with him. Whether this works or not would be up to the author.
8: If Haruhi was in a room alone with Akito, presumably brought against her will, she would probably be confused and annoyed, but eventually a little frightened and out of her depth (Akito tends to have that effect on people). But she would also piss Akito off VERY fast, with how observant yet practical and blunt she is. She would say some things that hit Akito hard, and she would probably be attacked fairly quickly. Shigure or Hatori would have to step in to protect her, and perhaps SHE learns about the curse in the process.
Honestly, it could go many different ways. But basically I wanted to demonstrate how Fruits Basket/OHSHC crossovers could be much more unique and interesting with fascinating character dynamics, whether the story is a comedy or a drama. Then, as a few honorable mentions:
Everyone compares Haruhi and Tohru’s Mom situation. But how would Haruhi react if she learned Momiji’s situation?
The twins harassing Kyo. Or, the twins harassing Haru and triggering Black Haru.
Tamaki charming Tohru and poor Tohru not knowing how to react (and Yuki and Kyo getting Very Frustrated.)
Shigure and Tamaki becoming friends because of course they would.
Shigure and RANKA becoming friends because OF COURSE THEY WOULD.
Ranka being a regular at Ayame’s store.
Etc etc etc. and that’s with just the more major characters. Hanajima and Uotani interacting with the host club would also be hilarious.
Anyway, point’s made—Fruits Basket and Host Club are fantastic crossover material, and deserve more unique content!!!

" Many times I lay awake and wonder why I'm alive anymore." - Garth to Yosano

“I promised to look after you and that’s what I’m doing.” Garth/Yosano
“Don’t make me laugh…it hurts…” - Garth to Yosano
She sighed when Garth admitted such things to her. Though didn’t he have a good point? Both of them had a problematic past, it was what linked them. They had found happiness with each other though. Though she sometimes wonder if perhaps she wasn’t enough for Garth. Surely if he was fully happy, he would speak of such depressing things. “That is normal , isn’t it?” Magenta eyes looked over at him, she was currently sitting at the desk attending to a few different things as Garth laid on the infirmary bed-- his bed--- and pondered about why he was alive. “I would have thought that things would have gotten better? Though I suppose with our abilities... we have suffered in ways that others can’t compare to. I can’t even relate fully to everything you must have endured.”
A soft sigh left her painted lips as she moved to get up and went to climb into the bed, after pulling her gloves off. Perhaps there was something she could do to make things a little better for him. “I would be said if you were to die” the truth. Garth had become part of her life , and it would honestly be a major blow if she ever had to lose him. She believed a lot of things, and she was aware that most people didn’t wish to get stuck with her. Garth could be so timid at times, but he had a heart of gold. She honestly did love him with all of her being. It was odd how things ended up like this.
Her arms went to wrap around him as she climbed into his lap , pushing him down slightly. Time to distract him from the depressing thoughts. “Things can be better for both of us now” softly her lips pressed against his. Lips trailing down his jawline and to his neck. She rested her head against his chest, listening to his heartbeat. It was odd how calming it could be. She heard his words and smiled. “We can, I don’t plan on leaving you.” It wasn’t the fact that most wouldn’t put up with her strong minded nature, it was she was set in her ways. Not many people were even fancied by her, she might admire strength-- but it was an odd line. She wished to stay with Garth though, it didn’t matter who his father was. That man would never own her, she would make sure of it.
As if he could read the thoughts through her magenta eyes, those words made her smile a little more. “Garth” she blooped him on the nose. “I think sometimes I’m the one taking care of you.” Those words he spoke prior, when it was in a way true-- if someone else might have said it--- she might have had a few choice words. Though with Garth, she found it cute. He was younger then she was, but he had always tried to take care of her. Even when they had been children during the Great War. “Surely you are getting tired of spending time here in the infirmary. Don’t you want to sleep in an actual bed?”
Magenta looked into ruby “I know the bed isn’t the best in the world” she pushed him down on the bed hovering over her. Several things needed to be met before Garth could leave this place safely. Mori’s power over him needed to be fully wiped clean, perhaps if he joined the Agency and got under the President’s protection. She would prove her point that it was probably only hurting him. Her hands trailed down his side, softly. “We need to be there for each other.” Finally after some time, Garth’s words came.
“Ah ha, see the beds aren’t that comfortable. Baby, I don’t want you to hurt. I want the best for you. I have a perfectly good apartment, we can stay there. Together. That way you can continue to look after me” she leaned down to kiss him once more.

Colours: White
Rating: Teen and up
Fandom: Ouran High School Host Club
Trigger Warnings: Depression, suicide attempt, self harm, hospitalisation
Summary: He wondered, instead of hoped. That was a slight improvement, at least...
Other fanfics in this series: Grey / Blue / Yellow / Green / Purple / Pink / Red / Black
Kaoru didn't know what to think, sitting in the cold, plastic chairs of the waiting room. No one did. He’d cried himself out a few hours ago, Hikaru was just going around in a daze; how do you compute this? How do you act after your friend tries to kill himself, and would've succeeded if his father hadn't walked in. It was a thought that was so… hard to get your head around. Had it not been for chance, Kyoya would be hanging from his closet door - a corpse.
The upperclassmen were asleep, Mori's head tilted so crookedly to the side that his neck looked broken, Hunny tucked into a small lump in his lap. Nothing too unusual, except for how restless the sleep looked, not peaceful at all. Then there was Tamaki, who'd also cried himself out, staring blankly at the wall, and Haruhi had her hand on his back in an attempt to keep him grounded. Still, it all felt like some alternate reality, like beyond this room was a void and nothing had ever existed. But that wasn't right.
Beyond this room was a ward. In that ward, in a private room, the most intriguing and spellbinding boy he'd ever met lay prone and pale, a tube down his throat and machines beeping. He was alive, but he looked so still it was terrifying. He looked like a sickly doll, a beautiful corpse, a painting that mourned over fallen angels and dead beauties. It was so disturbingly perfect.
“I'm fine, Tachibana, leave me alone,” Ootori-san hissed for what had to be the fifth time that hour, glaring at the other man, “I need to be here. What makes you think I can go home now? What if he wakes up? He's my son, not yours.”
Kaoru dragged his gaze over the two men. They were usually so put together, but after hours of waiting the image had crumbled away. Tachibana was only in his shirtsleeves, jacket, waistcoat and tie abandoned on the chair next to Hotta – who had his face in his hands. For men who were just so composed and tough, it was odd to see their eyes bloodshot and the skin around them a tender pink. Well, at first he thought it was; but they’d cared for Kyoya all his life, picked him up when he fell and protected him from any possible threat. They taught him and laughed with him, and they were all honorary fathers in a way.
And the boy they cared so deeply for tried to take his own life.
Ootori-sama’s shirt was untucked from his trousers, creased and looking incredibly sloppy compared to his usual standard. His eyes were also a little pink around the edges, framed with lines and shadows that made him look almost as sick as his son. Tachibana should give up on trying to convince his employer to go eat and sleep, it wasn’t going to work. Yoshio Ootori might not have been a great dad, but he was human. Unfortunately, he was a little messed up and it just clashed with Kyoya’s own issues.
The less said about his mother, the better.
He sighed, leaning back and thinking on all that had transpired in the last few hours. It was mad, how life can just swerve in a new direction at a moment’s notice, taking you off-guard and sending everything spinning like a car hitting a patch of black ice. It left everyone reeling, but now that Kaoru thought on it more… It wasn’t out of the blue. Kyoya was obviously not okay, they just… didn’t help.
The realisation lodged something uncomfortable in his chest, a small rock made of guilt that scraped his lungs when he breathed. He saw Kyoya… three hours before? Maybe four? It was almost sickening to think that he thought the other boy was fine – even if he wasn’t okay – only for something like that to happen.
He didn't blame Kyoya. He'd been suffering for a while, after all; desperate people do desperate things. He blamed himself, he blamed everyone in this fucking room actually, but he was the selfish one. He didn't want to see Kyoya pained, and so he just left him. Well done, asshole. Jesus. He and Hikaru weren't that different, despite others thinking of him as the “less self-centred” twin - a pack of lies if he ever heard them.
“Right, okay, we've got food,” Yuuichi sighed as he, Akito and Fuyumi re-entered the room with their armfuls of soggy sandwiches and packets of crisps. They ended up just dumping them on a nearby coffee table, clearly too tired to do much else, looking ready to just collapse any second.
“Just... Help yourself, I guess,” Akito grunted, gesturing vaguely before slumping down into a chair next to his father.
It was all rather melancholy, as expected. He wouldn't want it to be jovial, it'd be jarring and out of place, not to mention thoroughly heart-breaking. The small victory of this was that Kyoya survived; but that was it. It was both the biggest silver lining and the smallest victory they could achieve. He wasn't okay, they couldn't kid themselves into thinking he was, and so they were finally forced to act like his fucking loved ones - like they should've done all along.
Yoshio's phone rang once more, and he cancelled the call with a murmur of “stupid woman” under his breath. Kaoru didn't understand why Kyoka was still trying; she wasn't going to see him anytime soon. Yoshio was angry, the bodyguards were angry, Kyoya's siblings were angry... He just found it better to not ask, even if that's what helped this shit to fester in the first place.
Hours were ticking by at the same speed as millennia, the room silent once more. It was stifling, the hands of the clock either frozen or winding backwards, all sense of time confused and swallowed under the tangible fear, concern and guilt in the room. But he couldn’t leave. None of them could leave the hospital, because what then? How would they ever hope to convince Kyoya that life could be lived if they didn’t even stick out the time in the sterile room.
Of course, a nurse did come, eventually. He was no longer in danger, but they were worried about the damage done to his larynx. He was still tubed, still sleeping, but he could have visitors now. Just one at a time, possibly two, they shouldn't overwhelm him. After all, there'd be enough to take in when he wakes up - diet plans, medication, the 72-hour watch - without having the room crowded.
Of course, despite Yoshio's insistence that he stay, he assured them all that it would be best for him to not be the one he woke up to. Their relationship was rocky, and he didn't want to strain him, pressure him. He just insisted that it couldn't be him, no matter if Kyoya was his child and the baby of the family. Kaoru saw where Kyoya got it from, Yoshio's thoughts seemingly spiralled behind his eyes, and overthinking was certainly an Ootori trait - both a blessing and a curse.
“If it's okay... Does anyone mind if I go?” Fuyumi piped up, hand raised so delicately, almost nervously, “I know you all want to see your friend, I just... I just…”
Her eyes were glazed, threatening to spill over, everything seeming to hit her at once. Her baby brother tried to die, that was a hard thing to even think about, and Kaoru didn't blame her. In fact, he looked up to her. She just dried her tears and carried on; a strong woman.
“I need to see him.”
Kyoya was so... out of it.
His eyelids felt almost too heavy to even think about lifting, the beeping slowly growing in volume was piercing, and he just wanted to drift away once more. Everything was so muffled, but too vivid. His throat hurt. Everything hurt.
His mind was so slow. It was straining just trying to think of what happened - not to mention what was going on now. It was like wading through thick treacle, the rotted cells of his brain clumping together and turning into a goo that was far too viscous. It was like he was floating a couple of feet above his own body, unable to feel. He was sick of how intangible it all was.
Is this what death is like? Endless darkness for all eternity, nothing to occupy himself with? Maybe his aunt was right, maybe this was hell.
There was singing. It was gentle, sweet, some sort of lullaby that resided in dusty memories he didn't revisit for... whatever reason. He didn't know. The hand in his hair gently combed through the knotted strands, dexterously avoiding sharp pulls that plunked his hair from the follicle. It was so maternal, so caring, and he knew who it was immediately.
He tried to speak, but couldn't. Instead, he choked, his eyes going wide with panic as he found he couldn't move his hands, blinding him with bright white that he really wasn't ready for. Something plastic was in his mouth, down his throat, and he couldn't even move without something forcing his hands to stop.
“Kyo... Hey, Kyo, calm down,” Fuyumi tried to soothe, but he just shook his head vigorously, pulling even harder, “Kyo, you're okay. You're fine. You've got a tube down your throat to help you breathe, okay? You can't take it out.”
The beeping he'd heard in that odd, black place was getting increasingly fast, increasingly shrill. He still couldn't move his hands, and he wanted the tube out. It felt so uncomfortable, so stiff he was gagging and choking on it, and no matter how hard he thrashed he couldn't get out of whatever this was.
Restraints?
Sure enough, the cuffs secured his wrists to the bed railings, soft and mailable so he didn’t hurt himself. After all, what would be the point of tying down your patients if they could just tear their wrists open on the restraints?
“I’ll call the doctor, okay? Just stay calm… Keep breathing…” She murmured, her voice far too close to a croaked sob, “We love you Kyoya. Just… Please, we all need you here. Want you here. You’ll keep breathing, won’t you?”
He didn’t know. He didn’t know how to explain that he didn’t know, what with the tube down his throat, but he wasn’t thrashing anymore. His chest still rose and fell a little too quickly, his arms were tense and straining against the straps around his wrists, but his eyes were locked onto her. His darling big sister.
He could see the tears freely pouring down her cheeks, smile watery and crumbling into dust by the second. She was trying so hard not to break, and it hurt in his chest. It was keen and sharp, rather than a mellow ache, and God did it hit him hard. Of course, guilt didn’t fix it all. Love couldn’t pull him back from the edge. That would be all too perfect and Hollywood-ready.
Instead, he let his eyes fall closed once more, and wondered if he’d stop breathing in his sleep. But he wondered, rather than hoped, and that was a small step.
A/N: Can you believe there’s only one chapter left? Me neither!

Mori Keaki - 120% Darling: Part 1 Chapter 3 - Red skin of ‘passion’ (!?)
Mori Keaki published this essay book the month before her retirement as Top Star of Snow Troupe. It is mainly a memoir of her personal journey in Takarazuka, as well as her early life. Her writing/formatting style is kind of unique, and I tried to reproduce or reflect it as much as possible. 120% Darling has around 24 chapters, and I plan to post one every Friday.
It’s a really lovely book, that ended up making me cry many times. I hope you enjoy it!
For a table of contents with links to all the chapters, go here.
Red skin of ‘passion’ (!?)
In Takarazuka, besides the Grand Theatre, there is one other performance space called the Bow Hall.
So if you call the Takarazuka Grand Theatre the ‘large hall’.
Bow Hall is a ‘medium (or maybe it’s just small!?) hall’.
It’s a cozy theatre that fits about 500 people.
The performances held in the Bow Hall (let’s just call them ‘Bow performances’) are, as I’m sure you’ve guessed from the size of the theatre, on a smaller scale from the main performances in the Grand Theatre, and therefore the number of students who can appear is somewhere around half the troupe total. The length of the show’s run is also shorter, around 2 weeks.
So for us students, and for the younger directors, these Bow performances are another valuable opportunity to learn besides the junior performances.
Also, since it’s such a small theatre with such short performance runs, it’s possible to put on new, experimental kinds of shows that wouldn’t really work as a Grand Theatre main performance.
You see, since there are only about half the performers as there would be in a main performance, there are more chances for the junior students to have a real role! It’s fun in a rather different way to the Grand Theatre shows, so if you happen to go to Takarazuka, I think you really ought to see a Bow performance too, so please try it!! I really recommend them!!
Just a little advertisement. Ahaha……
I have a lot of memories of Bow performances myself.
But the first really strong impression I have is of a show called Dawn of Lombardia.
It was Ken-3 Mori Keaki’s first Bow Hall appearance!
So for a little baby student like I was this was a really, really delightful thing.
But, wait a moment! Even better, I was given a role! I would play Ricardo, the leader of a troupe of mercenaries - what a cool role!!
I entered rehearsals full of both nervousness and excitement.
As you’ve seen in the prior examples (!?) Mori Keaki ended up totally taken over by Ricardo and I spent the whole time trying to feel as much like him as I could.
And then the dress rehearsals.
The show opened the next day.
But, on the day of the dress rehearsal, something happened and it turned out that Nanao Tomo, who played the lead, might not be able to go on!
Nanao had injured her knee earlier and it had suddenly gotten much worse. As another stage performer I can understand what she must have been going through, to have a sudden collapse like that: so frustrating, so humiliating, you’d rather perform even if it killed you!! But it hurts so much… So many complicated feelings.
But the opening day of the show wasn’t about to wait.
In case of something like this happening, midway through the rehearsals ‘substitutes’ were supposed to be assigned to all the roles, but…
This time, somehow, who would substitute what had never been properly decided!
So. Suddenly.
Director Masatsuka Haruhiko said.
“You do it!”
To me…
I didn’t have any time to be surprised or confused or shaken, I just had to perform!!
The dress rehearsal started with me playing the lead role, Francois, while holding the script in one hand.
In the dress rehearsal we were all supposed to have the same costumes as in the real performance. However, I had to substitute so suddenly that I just went as I was. Ricardo had a red blouse: I’ll never forget that.
So I was wearing that and performing as if my life depended on it…
I ended up getting so hot all over.
And due to that heat, the blouse started losing its color! When the dress rehearsal ended and I took the costume off, my skin was totally red. Normally the stage costumes never lose their color like that. They’re made for Takarazuka shows full of vigorous movement and dancing, after all…
How much heat must I have been putting out for that to happen...it’s a mystery to me even thinking about it now…
Also, that blouse had some extra space to it, since it was designed for the medieval setting, so I was rehearsing with the script shoved into the front of it. I didn’t know a single one of my lines, you see.
“Why do you look like you’re pregnant!?” the choreographer said.
But, this was no time to care about appearances!! So that’s how things went.
By the time the dress rehearsal ended, there was still no conclusion regarding whether Nanao would be able to perform or not.
But, if by some chance the decision was ‘no, she can’t’ then there was nobody else to substitute for her role but me!
Director Masatsuka asked “Do you want me to come home and rehearse with you there?” which was very kind of him, but.
Before I could rehearse, I had to learn my lines!! After all, the show opened tomorrow!! I couldn’t perform with my script in my blouse, looking like I belonged in a maternity ward...no way, no way!!
When I left the rehearsal, it was raining outside……
It reminded me of my hometown...no, nothing that cool. But, rain. Compared to it all being bright and clear, it has a more serious feeling, doesn’t it!? So, I went home.
I didn’t sleep a wink in order to learn my lines…
I don’t really know myself how I managed to memorize them!! But I did! This was my first experience that made me think humans can discover amazing abilities when they’re pushed to the brink.
But I didn’t think about that until afterwards.
The next day was the opening.
When I arrived at the theatre in the morning, I asked the director, “Will I be substituting after all?”
But he replied, “We don’t know yet.”
“What am I supposed to do with my makeup, then?”
“Just do something that will work for either Ricardo or Francois.”
That was the conversation.
The decision finally came, 30 minutes before the curtain opened.
“Nanao-san will be performing,” was the decision.
“Ahh~, thank goodness!”
I sighed in relief, but.
After that.
I suddenly noticed.
My...actual role...had completely vanished from my head!?
And also, I hadn’t done any stage rehearsal as Ricardo… What should I do…
Even worse.
Huh?
I was totally shocked when I realized.
My voice wouldn’t come out!!
The day before, when I was so hot and sweating like my blouse was on fire, that had probably been a bad sign. Even so, if I had rested properly in a warm bed, I might have been fine, but…
But, but, but… I had been so desperate…
I hadn’t even noticed that my voice wasn’t working…
All the blood drained out of my face and I went completely white.
But the time of performance was coming closer and closer.
And the role I had been supposed to play in the first place, Ricardo, had. A solo.
“Director! If I sing like this the audience won’t be able to hear me at all!! Please, at least get someone else to sing for me!!” I pleaded.
“No. The song only has a point because you’re the one singing it. It doesn’t matter how your voice is, but you have to sing it,” Director Masatsuka said.
It’s like a scene in a coming-of-age movie, but it was real life.
So I went on stage in my original role of Ricardo. I was totally in a daze.
And then the curtain fell on the opening performance.
I had been in such a bewildered state that I had no idea whether I’d been able to speak or sing properly.
After the performance, Director Masatsuka came up to me. “You were amazing today!” he said.
I just started crying.
It wasn’t that I was miserable. Well, they weren’t exactly happy tears either. All the emotions from the time I had spent in a daze hit me at once and burst out through my eyes and throat like a fountain of crying. That kind of feeling.
I know that’s kind of an overused metaphor, but anyway.
I did it!! I did it!! I was able to do it!!
As I thought that, I felt like I had discovered something new about myself in all that confusion. I was inspired. And also a bit more relaxed.
That was such a hard trial… But that’s what opportunities always are, as a stage performer, maybe…
So I thought:
If you think ‘I can’t do this’, then you won’t be able to.
If you think ‘I can do this’, then you will.
In any case, you have to try!
If you try, you might learn something new, or develop somehow.
Although it was a tumultuous start to my first Bow performance, for the stage performer Mori Keaki it was a really valuable experience.
After that, I wasn’t scared of anything!! ...No, I couldn’t say that.
After all!
Mori Keaki’s challenges only continued!

BUCK-TICK DIQ-2017 live report
Kyoto Rohm hall - Nov. 9th 2017 (Part 1)
First I’d like to state that I don’t consider myself a hardcore fan in the sense that I don’t care for personal lives of the artists, leaks, bootlegs or other obscure contents. Call it a different word if you may, but I think I’d call it a passionate fan - I love the artists for what they do more than their works themselves, and I am always cool with whatever road they wish to take. I think that each song that the band creates has its own life, and although the band can do the best performance of that song because they know it best, the song exists to be brought to life by anyone and everyone. Thus the band is only there to materialize what needs to be materialized, and not for analyzing the expectations of their current fans and producing music only to please them. I started thinking about this when I frequented the perfume fandom and saw how much hate there was when the new album didn’t meet their expectations. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard Otsuka Ai say that she doesn’t want to go back to her previous style, and I’ve also read several reviews of people complaining that her new stuff doesn’t sound like it did before. Artists create what they believe need to be created, even if that means disappointing their previous audiences. I guess that’s what makes some artists go mainstream, which is not a bad thing at all either. It’s just that some people criticize artists for going mainstream, and others for not taking the mainstream path. This is one of the reasons I usually don’t read critics that judge bands with personal opinions, but read instead analyses of the music itself (Cayce does some great analysis at https://sites.google.com/site/lyricsyndrome/articles/reviews). And maybe that’s also one of the reasons why I myself don’t do live reports…
But the reason I had to share that rant, and the actual reason I don’t do live reports, is because I rarely remember what happens at live concerts 😂 Every time I go, the music goes directly from my ears to my follicles and I spend two hours in ecstasy and when I come to my senses I’m all sweaty with a sore throat and arms. I really feel lucky for being a person that experiences musical frisson several times almost on a daily basis. I also enjoy concerts with my eyes closed for considerable amounts of time - missing a few visual seconds of the band is nothing compared to the feeling of being bathed with the raw sound (and the screams of people, if there were any😒. Seriously, listen to e.g. Jupiter live from the Catalogue 1987-2016, disc 3 song 2 - it is CHILLING!). Plus, the last images I see before closing my eyes get burnt right into my brain and they’re the most precious memories that I get to keep. When I got this ask I had to google the playlist of the concert because all I remember was it starting with Dokudanjo beauty and finalizing with New World. So here is the playlist I found. Now that I see it I didn’t even recognize oriental love story
01.独壇場Beauty -R.I.P.- 02.ICONOCLASM 03.ANGELIC CONVERSATION 04.THE SEASIDE STORY 05.Oriental Love Story 06.スピード 07.LOVE PARADE 08.ノクターン -Rain Song- 09.サファイア 10.BABEL 11.BOY septem peccata mortalia 12.Django!!! -眩惑のジャンゴ- 13.絶界 14.Memento mori 15.COSMOS
-アンコール- 16.MACHINE -Remodel- 17.夢魔-The Nightmare 18.愛の葬列
-アンコール- 19.JUPITER 20.MY EYES & YOUR EYES 21.New World
So let’s start. As usual, the audience wasn’t very loud, compared to their early years. I mentioned this sometime before, but I don’t know if it’s because:
A) social behavior has changed - shyness, loudness not being socially acceptable, etc. (I remember seeing other artists with a much livelier audience so i don’t think that’s it)
B) only new fans are loud, and now that only long-term fans remain for BUCK-TICK, the loudness is gone (the 夢見る宇宙 tour dvd sounds amazing and it wasn’t that long ago, so I doubt this either)
C) the idol culture has spread everywhere; people go only to admire their idol and not to listen to me butcher their songs
D) the loudness hasn’t changed, they just used to hide microphones between the audience but I can’t tell because I didn’t go to the first concerts
E) it is forbidden by law
Whatever the reason it is, the band now needs to adapt to it, and I think Dokudanjo beauty was a great opening song, and if it had to be one song from a single it’d have to be either this or Glamorous in my opinion. This song has it all: music starts before the band is revealed, it’s followed by heavy snare and bass with good rhythm, and even though it has one of the easiest choruses which I hoped would have people singing along at least to this, it does have a lot of clapping which people love so at least that created good ambience.
Then we got some ICONOCLASM, but since I pretend to be able to play the bass for this (all the 3 notes!! 😏0530 3053) I was too busy getting U-ta blow his load all up in my ears to care about everyone else. I did expect Sakurai to let us say “5 for japanese babies”, but that was something that did not happen.
Then there was Angelic Conversation, which also gets the people wild like Jupiter does, but this time I did expect more heat from the fans. Also this is one of the favorite songs of the person who introduced me to BUCK-TICK so it’s a song that I enjoy on a very personal level. Since I was on the 3rd floor and most of the stage lighting was shining upwards directly on my face I had to listen to most of the songs with my eyes closed, but as I said before that’s not problem at all.
After that there was The Seaside Story. The song had the same intro as it did on the Atom Miraiha No. 9 Tour. With the playlist from that tour, the intro blended well with FUTURE SONG, but on this tour I might have missed something because I didn’t feel the same flow between songs. What I’m glad they kept was Sakurai singing the end of the second line from the first and third verses with full throttled anger (どうってことないわ & でもかまわないわ).
I’d like to skip Oriental Love Story here and instead talk about their wardrobes. Hoshino and Yu-ta were wearing standard Hoshino and Yu-ta clothes, respectively. Yagami先生 was wearing his long-tailed coat and no top-hat. I can’t recall what Imai was wearing, but his hair looked like it was on fire like in the  BABEL single and several if not all the other The Parade photos. Sakurai was wearing, and I haven’t seen other photos of it yet, thigh-high tights with a vertical fishnet strip on the front, with magenta velvet high heel short boots. They weren’t as hidden as his tights from the Atom Miraiha No. 9 tour. I just loved that there were several 12 year olds or so in the audience with their mothers, learning since young that a displaying your tights as a 50 year old male is something to take with pride and confidence.
Speed and LOVE PARADE followed. Both are great songs that are enjoyed without needing to add anything more than their studio versions. In LOVE PARADE, Sakurai stood back in the dark while the parade silhouette was projected on the wall, so it was more of a “letting us sing the lyrics” kind of song, as it was originally designed to be in my opinion.
After that they played Nocturne. Assuming you don’t download all their collection illegally (i’m watching you) without the struggle of finding out of press discs , I don’t think all the people are familiar with maxi-single songs like Nocturne. I don’t even know if they sell the singles in digital format now. The song had beautiful lighting effects, so I hope that those who weren’t familiar with the song before loved this performance enough to go get the single.
It was then that I hit my climax, when they performed Sapphire. One life, One death is one of my favorite albums but other than Baby, I want you I don’t really see other songs from the album being played live. I was just recovering from ICONOCLASM when Yu-ta dropped this on me. I never expected I would be able to experience it live. What I love from this song is that it feels like there’s a part of the lyrics reserved especially for the audience (Don’t let me down - take me to the end of life), that we can sing while Sakurai does his part. It is songs like these that really make me feel connected to the band during live concerts.
Right as I was on my second recovery from bass overload, they played BABEL (after some promotion by Sakurai). I purposely didn’t watch the BABEL PV until after I got my copy, which was to be after the concert. I let the band surprise me with a live performance, and boy did they overdid themselves. I loved the bass line for this song, which I think I have heard before somewhere on a different song but I can’t put my finger on it. (I also think Baby, I love you has a similar to rhythm to Enter Sandman by Metallica but my friends say I’m crazy…). The chorus of this song was also easy to catch up to. Before I knew it I was singing along to a song I’ve never heard before. By this time the fog inside the theater was getting really thick and I think that for the lighting to match the mood in BABEL this would be a song better played on the beginning.
Then they played BOY -septem peccata mortalia-. I still can’t pick a favorite song from Atom Miraiha No. 9, but as its live versions go this is one that I really like. I feel that for songs where they project the lyrics on the back wall, this is one where it really adds to the song (the other one I like: DADA Disco). I really wanted to see Imai play lying on the ground with his feet on the air, but this didn’t happen this time (or at least I don’t recall it).
