Day 6 of #transrightsreadathon and here are some graphic novels that I really enjoyed!
The Tea Dragon Society series by K. O'Neill is one of my all time faves. The art is gorgeous, the characters are unique, and the vibe is very comforting. The Tea Dragon Festival is about Rinn, a nonbinary youth, who accidentally awakens a dragon!
Mooncakes is a lovely story about Nova, a teen witch, and Tam, a nonbinary werewolf. Magic, mystery, and romance, and beautiful art.
Across a Field of Starlight follows two nonbinary teens in a galactic war. Lu is from the resistance and Fassen is from a peaceful planet that doesn't wish to be involved in the war. They never should have met, and now they must decide what their future will hold.
Cheer Up! Love and Pompoms is a contemporary story about two childhood friends reuniting in high school and joining the cheer team. I really loved this one! It's sweet, fun, and empowering.
Magical Boy takes on the magical girl trope... but what happens when you're a trans guy from a long line of magical girls? Max not only has to deal with his mother's transphobia, but also a demonic incursion and managing his newly awakened powers!
As part of Trans Rights Readathon, please consider reading books by trans authors and/or books with trans characters, researching anti-transgender legislation and how you can help, and/or donating to trans charities like the National Center for Transgender Equality, TransHealth, Transgender Law Center, and/or state and local charities. And don't forget to spread the word!
As a librarian, I'd encourage you to see what books your library has and, if they don't have the ones you're looking for, ask if they can be ordered! That way you're helping the authors, boosting library use, and (hopefully) getting the books in the hands of more readers in your community!

The graphics are shown: a brown hand holding up a pink sign with yellow text reading Trans Rights are Human Rights, a brown hand holding a nonbinary pride flag, and a wavy banner of the transgender pride flag. 🥮 Mooncakes by Wendy Xu, Suzanne Walker, and Joamette Gil
“Sometimes… sometimes I think we need space. A chance to go out on our own, find our own way.”
My friend Tay was the one who showed me this book and I knew right away, as I was eating a mooncake, that I had to get this book.
Nova Huang, a witch, meets her childhood crush Tam Lang, a werewolf, after not seeing each other in years. Nova finds Tam fighting a horse demon and they decide to work together to unravel the secrets around this demon and wolf magic.
A book that contains two of my favorite things: Magic and Werewolves (also tasty food)! The story-telling was very focused on families and the highs and lows of parents’ expectations (evil and non-evil expectations). Nova and Tam’s relationship is super cute, although it was moving really fast for my liking.
The one thing I loved most about this was how right away when Tam said “I use they/them pronouns now”, everyone accepted it and moved on, respecting their pronouns. I don’t need long-winded explanations on gender theory all the time. Sometimes I just enjoy the simple nature of accepting someone’s new pronouns and leaving it at that.

I just read Mooncakes, by Wendy Xu and Suzanne Walker. I had to share some of Nova's cute outfits! I love her style.
It's a fun story, Nova is a witch and Tam Lang is a nonbinary werewolf. I won't give any details about the magic and what they both get up to solving a mystery and how they find themselves in the middle of it all.
I highly recommend it, get it from your local library! Support artists, never buy from Am@x0n!

Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu
Tumblr media
Nova Huang knows more about magic than your average teen witch. She works at her grandmothers’ bookshop, where she helps them loan out spell books and investigate any supernatural occurrences in their New England town.
One fateful night, she follows reports of a white wolf into the woods, and she comes across the unexpected: her childhood crush, Tam Lang, battling a horse demon in the woods. As a werewolf, Tam has been wandering from place to place for years, unable to call any town home.
Pursued by dark forces eager to claim the magic of wolves and out of options, Tam turns to Nova for help. Their latent feelings are rekindled against the backdrop of witchcraft, untested magic, occult rituals, and family ties both new and old in this enchanting tale of self-discovery.

June Reading Wrap-Up
I ended up reading 10 books this month. Definitely more than I would have expected if you asked me on June 1st. It does help that I listened to four audiobooks over the course of as many days.
Every book I read this month (except The Way of the Househusband) was queer. I read queer year round, but I always pay special attention to make sure my #PrideMonth reads are especially queer.
What was your favorite book this month?
Books read:
• Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu
• The Way of the Househusband vol 8 by Kousuke Oono
• Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree
• Stealing a Thief’s Heart by C.L. Cattano
• The Devouring Wolf by Natalie C. Parker
• The Princess and the Grilled Cheese by Deya Muniz
• The Witch King by H.E. Edgmon (reread)
• The Fae Keeper by H.E. Edgmon
• My Dear Henry by Kalynn Bayron
• Fake Dates and Mooncakes by Sher Lee

Goooooooo read Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu
Fantasy is not always a genre I enjoy but this was spectacular. The art was so beautiful and well done and there where amazing characters and plots
I wish there was so much more, This could have been a few novels to full explore all the things in this book
And also really cute fantasy animals
Oh and it’s queer with villains that respect pronouns

Book Review #106 of 2023--
Tumblr media
Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu. Rating: 3 stars.
Read on August 22nd.
Like I do with most of the graphic novels I read, I'm going to keep this one short. This graphic novel had a ton of hype around it a few years back when it came out--at least on the bookish parts of the internet that I roam--and it sounds like it would be up most people's alley. It's a Fantasy Graphic Novel about a witch and werewolf who reconnect after several years and work to fight off a demon. They might also be developing something romantically. I liked the representation in this: we have a girl with hearing aids who has to work around them/with them for her magic, we have the two grandmas who the witch lives with, we have a WLW romance. It was also super sweet. I just feel like this falls into a trap that a lot of Graphic Novels fall into which is that it relies on things being implied in a lot of situations in order to be slightly shorter. It makes the story feel flat in those parts. But as we know I'm a girl who once said that a 700 page Fantasy novel was not long enough. I guarantee this could have been 50 pages longer and I still would have wanted more. It's definitely good for people who want a little bit of that witchy vibe while trying to summon Fall.

Review: Mooncakes
Writer: Suzanne WalkerArtist: Wendy XuPublisher: Oni PressReleased: October 22, 2019Received: Library Book Summary: Nova Huang is a teenage witch. There are many assumptions about what a teenage witch should be doing. For Nova, most of her life is spent helping around her grandmothers’ bookshop. She loves helping – and loves the magic. Her life had been calm and quiet – right up until Tam Lang…

Title: Mooncakes
Author: Suzanne Walker, Wendy Xu
Genre: Young Adult Graphic Novel, Fantasy
Published: October 22, 2019
My Thoughts: The nostalgic urge to rewatch Halloweentown is at an all time high. This was a warm drink cuddled next to your favorite person.
Nova Huang is a teen witch who works at her grandmothers' bookshop and investigates supernatural occurrences in their New England town. One fateful night, she finds her childhood crush, Tam Lang, battling a horse demon in the woods. Nova and Tam's latent feelings are rekindled against the backdrop of witchcraft, untested magic, occult rituals, and family ties. This is an enchanting tale of self-discovery.
This graphic novel feels like a best friend that has invited you in with a warm cup of coffee, cat cuddles, and unconditional love. With the beautiful illustration and the whimsical storyline, Mooncakes is bound to warm your magical inner spirit. Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu mix an enchanting plotline with beautifully developed characters that are just as diverse as real-life people.
I didn’t make this a five-star read because I felt I could use so much more of the story (which is never a bad thing). Mooncakes will give everyone something to love about it. This story is for you if you love sweet romances and magical moments. I would compare it to the feelings you get watching all those teen-witch movies (but with way more diversity).
