I just came across this bit of reddit dribble and was curious what your opinions were:
“Tywin doesn't think he's smarter than he is. I'm not just saying this because he is actually pretty smart, but because he doesn't overestimate his intelligence or it's ability to get him and his family out of trouble. So much of what he does in the series is defensive actions based on the assumption that his enemies know what they are doing and are smart enough to be threats.
You have to remember, he doesn't actually start anything. He sent the Mountain to raid in the Riverlands because Cat kidnapped Tyrion unprovoked. That actually gave him Casus Belli against the the Tully's at minimum, and the Starks once Jamie confronted Ned about it and Ned backed up Cat, and the Arryns once Lysa imprisoned Tyrion. Tywin tried to avoid open war by raiding instead, as a means to pressure Hoster Tully to influence his girls to let Tyrion go. It was an action that could be easily walked back if Tyrion was released, allowing everyone to move on. Everyone involved should have recognized that Tywin was within his rights to outright invade the Riverlands in response to the kidnapping, and his merely raiding was restraint meant to leave room for de-escalation. The problem was that Lysa was insane, Cat and Ned were morons being manipulated by Little finger, and Hoster was incapable due to illness. Tywin overestimated the intelligence of his opponents in this instance, by a lot. He also never underestimates the Tyrells, unlike everyone else, because he understands how cunning Olena is and how she runs the House. While everyone else assumes the Tyrells are jokes, Tywin understands that he has to keep them happy. He likely figured out that Olena was the mastermind behind Joffrey's death and chooses to scapegoat Tyrion to maintain the alliance.”
Holy moly, this is a bad read. Alright, let's go start to finish.
Tywin specifically sent Gregor Clegane under unmarked banners to raid the Riverlands. This is not a means by which to pressure Hoster, because theoretically, Tywin isn't doing anything - these are supposed to be brigands, not Tywin's household guard attempting to influence Catelyn's behavior. Now, of course, everyone knows that this is bullshit, it's not like you can confuse the Mountain that Rides for anyone else. But if Tywin has the casus belli, as OP suggests, why does he command that they fly no banners? He knows that he can't do it, hence why he creates the fig leaf of deniability.
The idea that the raids were meant as restraint for de-escalation is positively laughable. Tywin is conducting a chevauchee, which is warfare in the medieval era. Even if we take Tywin at his word that he was wronged by having his flesh and blood kidnapped, he's not "de-escalating," he's going further up the escalation spiral: kidnapping to war.
Moreover, we actually see what de-escalation looks like, because Hoster Tully attempts to do so. That's right, "incapable due to his illness" Hoster Tully responds to Gregor Clegane's raids by attempting to de-escalate: by seeking the King's Justice. He sends a delegation to Robert's court (and he believes he'll be appealing to Robert, not Ned sitting while Robert is faffing about on a hunting trip) to beseech the King's Justice. This is specifically what you do to de-escalate, you appeal to the next rung up the feudal ladder first. However, to Tywin, beseeching royal justice makes him look weak and reminds him uncomfortably of his father Tytos, who was so weak that Aegon V needed to intervene in the Westerlands. As many meta writers, including myself, have written, Tywin has a strong emotional fixation on the projection of strength, responding to any hint of weakness with maximum brutality to ensure that he is feared and no one doubts the capability or might of House Lannister.
Regarding Olenna Tyrell, that's an invention of the show. In the books, Tywin and Olenna don't interact, rather they foil each other's plans. As to believing that Olenna was actually guilty, Tywin's characterization actually goes against that. If Tywin believed the Tyrells would kill Joffrey, he'd destroy them, because you don't raise your hands against the Lannisters and live.
Thanks for the question, Anon. Go dunk on them.

ive never played the games so i dont know what to picture when im reading your fics, how tall do you think soren and ike are?
I said recently that they have a Mulder and Scully level height difference and I stand by that statement. This one is a little hard to answer, because I don't think there is a definitive answer -- it's not like comics where there's an official handbook with heights and weights listed, although there is like, a vague equivalent. I'll get to that. I know recently some people deduced heights by, I think, converting the measurements of their respective models in Fire Emblem Engage, the anniversary game for the series that featured both characters, but I'll be honest, that's too much math for me, and I'd rather rip into the text of the original games until I come up with my own answer. So I'm gonna give you my thoughts, and the canon evidence that backs them up, but it's just my opinion.
Anyway I'm going into this with the same amount of thought that I go into with all my comics meta. I'm sorry about that in advance.
So two things about Fire Emblem 9 and 10. The first is that the games aren't new -- FE9 came out in 2005, and FE10 in 2007. Graphically, they hold up well, but it's because they're not very complicated. The majority of conversations take place involving still portraits with text underneath -- there's only a few fully animated cutscenes. (Soren is in exactly one FE10 cutscene, and they're not standing next to each other.) The second is that the games take place over a period of a few years (each game takes place over about a year, with a three year gap in between FE9 and FE10). Ike starts FE9 at 17, and he's about 20 at the start of FE10. And he evolves like a Pokemon.
Tumblr media
This is not meant to be to height scale; I just wanted these three pieces of official art next to each other for comparison. Graphic design is not my passion.
Also, this has nothing to do with height, but I'm going to point it out anyway: Ike's FE10 artbook page literally ends by talking about how he's in love with Soren.
Tumblr media
(credit to Kantopia for the translation.) (did I mention that, by FE rules, the ship is canon. because it's canon.) The character designer, Kita Senri, also drew this picture of FE9 and FE10 Ike standing back to back, which. Yeah. Okay!
Tumblr media
By FE10, at least, so by age 20, Ike is tall. (His parents come from the Tall People Country, Daein.) His size is remarked upon a couple of times in the script, too, by people who hadn't seen him for a few years:
Ike: Tormod, it's been a while. Tormod: Holy moly! You are absolutely huge! I feel puny next to you… Ike: That's because you are puny. Magic clearly doesn't give you much muscle tone. (...) Tormod: Nah, you just can't see me properly because all of your blood gets pumped to your muscles, away from your brain! [leaves] Ike: A little touchy, Tormod?
(FE10, Part 4 Chapter 4)
Volke: You’ve grown quite a bit since the last time I saw you. Ike: Everyone loves telling me that. Volke: You’re starting to look like Greil. Ike: That might be true, too. He IS my dad.
(FE10, Part 4 Endgame-1) It should be noted that Ike's dad, Greil, was pretty huge.
Engage also has it remarked upon, with one character saying that Emblems (essentially FE main character force ghosts in-game) are big, and Ike remarking that that's not an Emblem thing, he's just huge. (He's the funniest Fire Emblem main character except for his co-star, Micaiah, Little Miss War Crimes, and I'm barely even biased at all.)
There are in-game stats for height and weight (build/constitution and weight, respectively), as they relate to mechanics -- if one character is significantly bigger and heavier than the other, the smaller character can't rescue them or shove them. Weight varies because, for example, if a character is on a horse, the horse factors into the weight, or if they're wearing heavy armor, etc. Build, for me, is the best indicator of general (not exact) height. In FE9, Ike's build and weight start off at 9, which is pretty average, and then 10/11 upon class promotion. In FE10, his build is 12 and weight is 13, which is on the bigger side -- I'd say compared to other human men in the game, but there are a lot of big guys in this game. Again, he's twenty, so he's probably still growing, and everyone is already remarking that he's huge. I'm almost always gonna go with what the text says, and the text in FE10 says he's huge, pretty unequivocally.
Soren... is not huge. Soren is, debatably, pretty tiny.
If we're going to use build/weight as a metric, and I think for these purposes we have to, then Soren is a 6 build and 6 weight to Ike's 12 build and 13 weight. So half Ike's size. Either way, 6 build and 6 weight is small -- the only people who are smaller than him are a handful of the female characters, including the one with literal bird bones. How much this reflects on his actual height is up for debate -- I think when that FE Engage height math was done, it was determined that, based on his model there, he was probably 5'10", which is obviously not that short, but if that's the case he's probably very thin to account for that weight stat. His father and his eldest uncle, if not also his mother, are very tall, so there is that to factor in. Soren is half-dragon and he ages slower than an average human, so there's potential for him to end up quite tall -- but it could take twenty, thirty years. (Soren is 19 in FE9 and 22 in FE10.) It's kind of a big shrug in his case. I don't think he's particularly tall, but I think it's more up for personal interpretation how tall he is, as opposed to Ike where the text is repeatedly shouting "HE'S HUGE!!!" at you. He is, pretty clearly, quite a bit smaller than Ike.
I'm going to wrap up this insane person analysis with this pretty art of Soren which does nothing to suggest anything height-wise. I just like to look at it.
Tumblr media
(PS thank you for reading my fic even though you haven't played the games! It always makes me really happy to hear that people like my writing enough to do that. but also I have like, fully conspiracy theoried my way into believing they'll rerelease the games.)

Live Action: Thoughts and Etc. Episode 1
Whenever some new AtLA surge happens, whether animation renaissance or new series, I rise again from the grave and this time is no different.
This isn't anything formal, but I wanted to collect my thoughts as I go through rewatching episodes. I'm still not done with an initial watching of the new live action, but I've started rewatching the first couple of episodes anyway to note down what I liked about what the new series is doing and also where I think the narrative could have been stronger.
I don't mean this as a critique of the show on any other level other than on a narrative level—I'm not a film or visual studies person; my forte is in storytelling.
I also didn't want my reactions to just be seeming criticism, because there is a lot that I really like about the show (especially as I get deeper in episodes), so just consider this an initial reaction & thoughts on what could have been improved upon. So far, the first two episodes have been the weakest to me, which is really unfortunate because I worry a lot of people won't get beyond them. I know my opinion and thoughts don't matter because a) I'm not part of any kind of decision-making group that could actively affect this and b) it's already done with and out and it's not going to be changed, but we all love meta and thoughts around here, right? Right.
The format of these I'm imagining as follows: I'll go over what I liked or loved first, because there's more and more as episodes go on, and you should always, always start with what you appreciate and enjoyed about a work first before going into what might be improved upon. Next, I'll go into where I felt the narrative could have been improved upon, just from what I know with my Literature™ and in-progress MFA™ eyeballs. Finally, if applicable, what I personally didn't care for that doesn't actually impact the narrative one way or another. This final section will be potentially be under a cut if the post is too long. Everything will be noted as I do my second watch of the series, and will be in chronological order. I don't know that I'll have time to do proper paragraphs, so I hope a list format will be acceptable to anyone who's made it this far and remains interested in my thoughts.
Of course, this will contain spoilers for each episode, and all posts will be tagged "atla la ep#" and "atla la ep# spoilers" (where the # in each tag will be the corresponding episode number) so folks can blacklist as needed.
Now, on to the main event—
What I liked:
-The settings are lush and gorgeous! Holy moly! -The costumes are phenomenal so far. Absolutely fantastic. -Even if some of the actors are a little stiff, I am loving all of them. -Loved the airbenders fighting back. No notes. -The dialogue between Iroh and Aang in the brig is actually perfectly nuanced. I really like it. -REALLY love Aang pilfering Zuko's Avatar journal -Also love Katara being the one to extinguish Zuko's final fire blast with her waterbending. Setting up that good rivalry between them in s1. -I like the expansion of the SWT village and Katara being in the old FN ship in lieu of the otter penguin sledding scene -Love Zuko being an artist. I like to think it's a nice, early nod to learning under Piandao
What Could be Improved Narratively:
-Stop the Sozin scene right after he burns the earthbender -When Gyatso has Aang in the room with Yangchen's statue, the exchange should have stopped with: "You have always been special." "I never asked to be special." "But you are," and the writing should have allowed Aang to put together that he is the Avatar without explicitly saying "Aang, you are the Avatar." If they took that line out and let the silence hang and then taken out all explicit statements of "You are the Avatar," so they would have been talking around actually saying it, it would have improved the scene. -Remove Aang's little monologue with Appa before the fly off except for maybe hugging Appa and saying, "I'm scared" -Show Aang and Appa getting caught in the storm. There's a very small missing piece of that scene. -Could pare down the exposition in Zuko & Iroh's argument about following the light to not explicitly say "and take my rightful place as heir," as Iroh saying "it may be time to consider the throne isn't everything," and Zuko replying, "Maybe it wasn't to you" does that work. BUT I actually don't think this is as clunky as other dialogue-exposition parts. -Either excise Aang's flashbacks to saving himself with the Avatar state before he wakes or remove it from earlier in the episode; we don't need it twice. -the WT kids running outside of the village to play is awkward. Why wouldn't they play inside the walls? If it's so Appa wouldn't land inside the village, this is easily solved by having Aang airbend over the walls when searching for Appa. -I know Kanna's monologue about the FN attacking is an homage to the original, but it feels hamhanded. I would excise it. Remove everything she says in this scene in the tribe meeting except, "The last time a comet was seen was 100 years ago." -Honestly, excise most of Kanna's dialogue. It's all hamhanded exposition; we're seeing the "hand of the author(s)" here. When Zuko's ship arrives all she has to say is, "They're looking for him." Let the reveal be Katara saying it to Sokka when he's going to give Aang up. -Replace the repeated scenes with Gyatso when Aang discovers his skeleton with other memories. We don't need a rehash of something in the same episode.
What I Personally Did Not Care For:
-I want bigger fire from the firebenders. It's a comet that powers them up ffs. -Katara needs to express a great desire to learn waterbending in this episode somewhere -Sokka and Katara being caught in a current should have been from Katara's angry paddling to echo her angry waterbending from the original -I also wouldn't reveal Kya's death in flashback flashes so early -When Zuko sees Aang for the first time it's a perfectly missed opportunity for "You're just a kid!" "Yeah, well you're just a teenager!" -Unsure why Katara said, "The thing about losing everything is that's when you find out how strong you are" instead of something like, "I can't imagine how this must feel. But you don't have to be alone. We're here with you."

Cloak & Dagger On the Air Presents Original Sin This Saturday
Tumblr media
Two new radio plays are showcased in the troupe’s mid-season finale This Saturday, May 27, 2023, The Ohio Valley Cloak & Dagger Company presents Cloak & Dagger On the Air’s mid-season six finale at 4 p.m. at Top of West Virginia Convention & Visitors Bureau, located at 3539 Main Street in Weirton (across from Ferguson Tire Pros). Titled Cloak & Dagger On the Air: Original Sin III, the production will feature two original radio plays by executive producer and head writer Pete Fernbaugh. Act One will premiere the latest episode of the troupe’s interactive non-British British game show, Let's Solve a Meta Mystery! The mystery this go-around is titled "A Fistful of Outlaws," in which we journey back to the cowtown of Hellfire, where every myth and every legend you’ve ever known about the Old West comes alive, only to die at the end of a gun, a fist, or a carelessly hurled shot glass. “One Friday evening in the Six Feet Under Saloon, lawman Wild Wyatt Wheeler, guns drawn and eyes a-blazin’, crashes the debauchery to declare that Angus McMann, the Surly Scotsman and the Richest Man in These Here Parts, has been found dead on the outskirts of his property, his expansive ranch has been razed, and his fabled Ostrich Egg Gold Nugget has been purloined,” Fernbaugh said. “The studio audience, including three contestants who will join our troupe on stage, will have a chance to solve the mystery of Angus McMann's demise and win some prizes, all while immersing themselves in the absurdity and arcanity of this unique game-show experience.” Act Two’s drama is titled The Wayfaring Stranger. “Imagine a past filled with the most despicable acts a person could commit,” Fernbaugh said. “Imagine spending 15 years of a life sentence in prison, locked away for those acts, only to one day be released and given a second chance no one believes you deserve, including you yourself. Then, imagine having to face the world you wronged head-on, without the protection of those prison walls or the security of your sentence. What would you do? Where would you go? How would you respond to this undeserved freedom? And how would the people you wronged, whose lives you destroyed, respond to your undeserved freedom?” Such are Matthew Thomas's circumstances when we meet him in The Wayfaring Stranger. A score by classical pianist Roberta Fedoush will accompany the piece. The cast for both stories includes: Sheila Cavalette, Rob DeSantis, Bethany Fernbaugh, Pete Fernbaugh, Noah Hilton, Nancy Longo, Karissa Martin, Ralph Parissi, and John E. Reilly, with sound effects by the Holy Foley Molies. Admission to Cloak & Dagger On the Air: Original Sin III is free, although donations to help cover production costs are always appreciated. Light refreshments and water will be available. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. with live music by R.J. Gaudio, Troubadour, who will perform pop, rock, and folk music favorites. The program will also livestream from The Ohio Valley Cloak & Dagger Company Facebook page starting at 3:30 p.m. Top of WV CVB is located at 3539 Main Street in Weirton, W.Va. Ample parking is available behind the building, where there is also an entrance. Individuals with mobility impairments may more easily enter through the building’s front entrance. Cloak & Dagger On the Air is a monthly theatrical series from The Ohio Valley Cloak & Dagger Company that celebrates audio drama from all eras, particularly the fabled Golden Age of Radio. By reimagining classic radio dramas and literary works, along with original stories written and produced by independent writer and actor Pete Fernbaugh, Cloak & Dagger On the Air strives to give audiences an immersive experience that engages the theatre of their imagination in creating a fully realized storytelling adventure. The Cloak & Dagger On the Air podcast completes the experience by presenting these stories in the way they were meant to be seen: by the mind's eye. Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight: Roadshow (2021) dir. Furukawa Tomohiro
ALL THE WORLD'S (and screen) A STAGE.
Quick note: I'm only familiar with the Revue Starlight 12-episode anime series and nothing else in the sprawling franchise.
A+ the swirl of position zero markers reminding me of the storm of swords in Utena. In general I love how the designs incorporate the position zero "T" all over the place, like here in the center of Tokyo Tower.
A more obscure shout out, but Karen on the tracks with the sound of the incoming train reminded me of a (much brighter) Haibane Renmei sequence.
It takes 24 minutes but once Roadshow goes surreal, it goes full hog wi(l)d-screen baroque. Wow. What I really love about Revue Starlight is how it blurs the lines of suspension of disbelief in how smart it is about the language of visual spectacle and the pulling back of the curtain to show the "movie" magic. The inclusion of the element of stage production means that you're never quite sure if you're seeing the fiction present full on magical realism wherein as a function of processing fiction we stretch the boundaries of what we accept are in-universe rules of that constructed reality, or if the strangeness is an in-universe literal construction as would be produced on a stage: fog machines, wires, background scenary boards, stage machinery for rearrangement and movement. Revue Starlight effortlessly moves in and out of these two fields, playing with audience expectations, pushing and pushing the spectacle.
Holy moly, Daiba Nana! Always the dark horse of the narrative, Banana! Claudine being annoyed that her "lines" are being ignored is pitch perfect though.
Karen really worked her ass off to fulfill this promise. I gotta admit it wasn't the impression the anime series gave me, that so much effort had been put into getting into Seisho. Also, holy crap, kiddo, that's really sticking to the letter of the law of that promise.
Utena: cars as a metaphorical device. Revue Starlight: trains. (Oh, yes, I'm thinking about it: trains being restricted to tracks, traveling the routes delineated for them, but also forms of mass transportation, so it's stark when the girls are in train cars alone vs with civilian passengers. Stations as physical destinations and also nebulous ideas of unformed futures and freaky liminal spaces in and of themselves. What's the stage? Who's making it? They can decide to get on the train, but can they decide where they're going?)
I enjoy the Kaoruko, Futaba, Claudine trio. In fact, one of the things I like about Revue Starlight is the sense that the members of this little group all interact with one another even though there are also clear subgroups/subpairs. Do wish Kaoruko's usual speaking voice was always in that lower register.
Wow, this Futaba vs Kaoruko revue feels pretty sexually charged--and that is 100% Kaoruko's fault. This is very gay, girls. Wow.
Which are the best staged revues and why are they Mahiru's??? The playfulness of Mahiru's stages are such a joy. Are all these sports competition cuts a subtle tie-in to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics??? I'm loving it, you guys know what a ho I am for the Olympics!! This revue alone is the perfect showcase of what Revue Starlight does well re: blurring all the lines between constructed reality and "reality." So good. The genre transitions of the song are also amazing. The fanservice of this movie is cranked to 200 re: the dynamics. All the Hikari/Karen/Mahiru shippers put your hands up.
My only complaint about watching revues is that as a non-Japanese speaker, it's always a lot to process: the brilliant visuals layered with meta, the translations of the song lyrics and the translation of the dialogue. It's a lot.
A revue that is the physical manifestation of pen vs sword. My favorite thing about Revue Starlight is that because everything is a stage production, everything *has* to be EXTRA. It just has to be. Nice bookending here of Nana saying Junna isn't the Junna she knows vs. earlier when Junna said that of Nana.
GIRAFFE, DON'T BE GETTING META ON ME AND TRYING TO BREAK THE FOURTH WALL TO BLAME THIS ALL ON THE AUDIENCE. We've been through this already. The real culprit, Mr. Giraffe, is capitalism. Obviously.
Maya's stages are always about levels, who stands higher (in the spotlight, at the summit), and who is lower. "You're the cutest you've ever been!" "I'm always cute!" I don't know what to feel except that that those are exactly their egos and this is gay.
"Wow, that's gay" I think of every revue, but am delighted to say it's a different shade of gay every time. The movie is very much about tying up ends via a theme of moving forward, goodbyes, separations, acknowledgement of what these pairs have given each other in terms of support, lessons, goals, ambitions, and expressing gratitude for those things in light of having to leave people behind to explore new chapters, new stages, new roles. To reductively summarize, Kaoruko and Futaba have to physically go different ways and separate after having always been together, Futaba pursuing what she realized during the series: she needs something for herself, not always simply following Kaoruko, while Kaoruko has to recognize Futaba as her own person and let her go. Mahiru gets to confront her jealous feelings of rivalry over Karen's attention by going through Hikari, whereas in the series Mahiru only ever opened up to Karen about the situation. Nana and Junna break free to try to find their own paths: Junna refuses the stagnation that Nana imposed and Nana has to recognize that allowing her friends to grow and change doesn't diminish them; they'll face pains and doubts to come with determination--and encouragement, challenge, and examples from their friends. Maya and Claudine embrace their rivalry as equals, reciprocally acknowledging that the other pushes her to new levels of performance and ambition by recognizing and admiring the other's skills and strengths openly rather than with jealousy--the compliments paid are genuine, not snide, and in that recognition is the ability to see oneself (and accomplishments) more clearly and a vulnerability that allows for the admission that one can always improve to reach the other's ever-increasing level. (Their stage, at the end, has no steps upon which one has ascended and the other hasn't; they lie together, equally elevated and centered, on a raised platform, yin and yang.)
The exception is Karen and Hikari, of course, whose *past* fills their story thread. We're finally getting all the details... and Karen is stuck in the past and hasn't reconciled with/grappled with/seen that childhood promise to a conclusion, which is why she isn't with the others. The others have found personal purpose and fulfillment on the stage for the sake of the stage itself and their desire to perform but for Karen, the goal was performing "Starlight" with Hikari.
What fourth wall???
Mad Max: Fury Road?!
And there go the symbolic pins as Hikari and Karen move beyond that childhood promise and onto bigger dreams.
Aw, another shot reminiscent of Utena in the credits.
I really enjoyed that. Like Utena, the visual language and meta commentary and sometimes outright blatant commentary is so metaphorically and allegorically deep that you can keep peeling back the layers--and your own complicity in the creation of the tale--but it's so fun on its face that you can simply sit back and enjoy the spectacle. Filled with the wild abandon of imagination, beautifully animated (and really probably only possible through animation), such fun songs, and filled with hope for characters we've come to like and who like each other, who are friends. Embrace the EXTRA of the theater stage, it's great!

omg yes.... I would love any Tim drake rec you have. 😭😭😭😭
Sorry It has been WEEKS AND WEEKS but fam I am here to DELIVER!!!!!
In no particular order, and all completed if I don’t state otherwise:
First off, not Tim-centric but one of my top three fave portrayals of Tim ever: Everything in the Cor Et Cerebrum series by audreycritter. The holy grail of Batfam content.
The FUNNIEST silly series vox nihili et in Gotham ego that makes me crack up laughing every time I read them, and which is going to have a third fic at some point in the future, praise the lord I will Straight Up Die
The Liminal Spaces series by Calamityjim which I DIE OVER ON A WEEKLY BASIS, what a beautiful portrayal of Tim and what a healthy Batfam will look like and giving Tim the healing and rest he DESERVES even if the UNIVERSE DOESN’T WANT TO COOPERATE I love this series with my WHOLE HEART and I could read it a million times
The Surveillance series by smilebackwards. THIS IS OLDER TIM WHO IS RUNNING AROUND GOTHAM WITH A CAMERA GETTING EVIDENCE AND JASON ISN’T DEAD AND EVERYTHING IS WILD AND TIM IS JANET DRAKE’S SON AND MAKES IT HIS LIFE GOAL TO A) HELP THE BATS AND B) DRIVE LEX LUTHOR MAD AND HE IS ABSOLUTELY INSANE WHILE BEING A GENIUS AND I LOVE THIS TIM TO PIECES. He has no clue what to do while the Batfam slowly circles around and starts to pull him under their protective wings and meanwhile cannot keep himself from insulting Lex’s business strategy even while he is being literally shot at. God I love this stupid genius Tim to pieces oh my god it’s the Tim we all deserve
Whoopsie by MishaBerry, in which Tim’s asplenia comes back to haunt him (and everyone else in the family)
(Un)Wanted, by Mika-chan, in which Tim is kidnapped and oh my god the angst. But also the comfort.
Chemistry of a Car Crash by anthologica, in which Tim is, indeed, in a car crash, and it’s really really well done, love it
Obedience, by Sohotthateveryonedied—I don’t want to give anything away, but holy moly. This is so good. It’s like Ella Enchanted but with so much more pain and sibling bonding and Tim tears and comfort. WHAT a good plot omg.
Blink The Ghosts Out by MashpotatoeQueen5. Hohohohoho if you like timkon even a little bit, is this the angst for you. Tim gets drugged at a gala and goes through the process of trying to figure out how Kon is alive suddenly in front of him, and then has to deal with the fallout. Lots of hurt. Gentle amounts of comfort and compassion. So satisfying, very very well written. So real.
The Ol’ Switcheroo by AutumnHobbit, in which Damian takes a bullet for Tim, and brothers bond, and family comes together, and there’s a good plot, and so much hurt/comfort, SO WELL DONE I love this fic and reread it at least once a month tbh
Drinking Games by Shirokokuro, in which Tim and Bruce end up with a little tradition of cat-and-mouse at galas as Tim is a teenage boy determined to drive Bruce up the wall for attention and Bruce is Absolutely Onto Him, Just You Wait. No angst. All the hilarious fluff. I adore the tone of this!! So fun!
Can’t Stay Down (a Documentary) by SonoSvegliato. GOD. This is a STELLAR portrayal of Tim, and a hilarious portrayal of the batfam, and Tim has the misfortune of needing his tonsils out and fights them EVERY step of the way. Bruce is trying. SO hard. He may not be the best but he’s TRYING. There’s NatGeo Wild, a dinosaur plushie, a lot of jello and gatorade, stubborn vigilantes, pain meds, sibling harassment, and ABSOLUTE hilarity. This fic made me laugh out loud so many times while also wincing in sympathy. SO GOOD.
I’m Just Fine by girlgeekjf, in which SOMEONE EXPLORES THE AFTERMATH OF THAT ONE COMIC where Tim gets himself kidnapped on purpose, gets hit pretty bad in civvies, gets the other kids out, and watches that self-made sort-of-meta kid get super duper hurt and end up in a coma and falls into a hefty guilt spiral. Beautiful tackling of the aftermath of what injuries Tim likely had, so much good Batdad content, Tim being confused about affection and worry being thrown in his direction, and medically accurate fic. LOVE IT.
Lean On Me by Musingsofthesky, which is a LOVELY sickfic where Tim tries to hide his illness so he doesn’t ruin the business trip with Bruce. WHAT A GOOD DAD BRUCE IS IN THIS. Poor Tim. 10/10 read this again every few week. SUCH an accurate Tim.
Juneberries, by MishaBerry, in which Tim is kidnapped by Bad People, Damian goes after him all alone, Stuff Goes Down, and the two brothers at odds really learn to get along and finally share some honest conversation, god BLESS.
Year of Fallen Angels, by maychorian. WOW. Tim is captured and tortured, emerging from the experience with serious, life-changing injuries, and he has a long healing process ahead both physically and mentally. Beautifully woven. Amazing portrayal of physical recovery, family healing, slowly building self-worth, and so much beautiful growth among the whole Batfam as they circle the wagons around Tim in his time of need. This fic is WONDERFUL and a gift.
Into the Brighter Night, by @shoalsea. I don’t even know how to describe this fic. It’s two chapters away from completion, it’s my favorite Tim fic of all time, it does his character justice, it’s got ALL kind of Batfam and Young Justice dynamics, its plot is SO intricate and detailed and complex and interwoven, I have read it sixteen times, I will read it till I die, this is the best portrayal of Tim in all his deep complexity and skill and exhaustion and selflessness and goblin-like behavior and issues and badassery that I have ever seen in my life, 100000000/10 please read this I’m begging you you will be so overjoyed

*side eye emoji* Do you have any good sci-fi or fantasy book recs? I'm running outttt
Oh, have you come to the right place, my friend. I work in publishing so the top 4 are authors I’ve worked on. Just a little list to get you started.
1. Catherynne Valente’s SPACE OPERA. Eurovision in space. Queer broken band must compete for Earth’s existence in an intergalatic music competition.
2. Theodora Goss’ THE STRANGE CASE OF THE ALCHEMIST’S DAUGHTER. A lady detective monster mashup full of found families and mysteries and meta writing.
3. Rebecca Roanhorse’s TRAIL OF LIGHTNING. A monster hunter must battle her own demonic tendencies and the memory of a past betrayal in the post-apocalyptic Navajo Nation.
4. Meg Elison’s THE ROAD TO NOWHERE SERIES. This is bleak af but it is also well-written and powerful. A queer dystopian series and it must be read.
5. Sarah Rees Brennan’s IN OTHER LANDS. This was written for fandom. I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH. Hilarious, heart-wrenching and gorgeous written.
6. Jessica Townsend’s THE TRIALS OF MORRIGAN CROW is the only comp to Harry Potter that deserves to be labeled as such. A fantasy book I wanted to dive into and never stop reading about, this book is super endearing and lovely.
7. Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner’s THESE BROKEN STARS. This is the launch of a series about space politics and rebellion and love and omg just read it.
8. Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff’s ILLUMINAE FILES. EPIC SPACE THRILLER. READ IT.
9. Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff’s AURORA RISING. Another epic space thriller but this time told by a bunch of ragtag space soliders who are my new best friends and I would die for them all.
10. Laura Ruby’s THE BONE GAP. This is more realistic fantasy but holy moly is it gorgeously written. A Persephone retelling.
11. Laura Ruby’s YORK: THE SHADOW CIPER. This is a middle-grade riddle thriller and it was so fun and wonderful. Amazing anxiety rep.
12. Leigh Bardugo’s SIX OF CROWS-Do you like heists? Do you like found families? DO YOU LIKE  AMAZING WRITTEN BOOKS? (Also, some people prefer to read her other series first, Shadow and Bone.)
13. Marie Rutkoski’s THE WINNER’S CURSE. Forbidden love, much? Political fantasy thriller. Writing that takes your breath away?
14. Melissa Grey’s THE GIRL AT MIDNIGHT. I have a thing for found families and amazing world building and thieves with hearts of gold, okay? I love this book so so much.
15. Laini Taylor’s DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE- Also amazing worldbuilding, set in Prague, really really awesome.
16. V.E. Schwab–I’ve only actually read one book by her but I love her style. A Darker Shade of Magic is her super popular series.
17. Mary Robinette Kowal–just won a HUGE sci-fi award but I have never had the pleasure of reading her books. Yet.

A look at the FFIII Manga: Cid, Sara and Djinn
Cid Haze and Princess Sara Altney are the two earliest allies the Warriors of Light have in the game (and coincidentally, the two characters who are part of series-wide naming conventions). They’re not in the party for long, but they aid the warriors in their own ways. Cid in particular helps turn the party’s boat into an airship near the end of the Floating Continent arc and was given a bit more story prominence in the remake via playing an important part in the orphans’ backstory.
So, how are they in the manga?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cid is first encountered in Volume 1, when the light warriors head over to Not-Kazus, which is a ghost town that has nothing but dead bodies and an odd old lady. The old lady unsurprisingly turns out to be evil and attacks the heroes by summoning monsters (after baiting Melfi with ghostly images of what seem to be her parents) except not really because she has a talisman that can banish them. After Bowie kills one of them with the talisman, the monster releases Cid's essence. This apparently snaps the old woman (who I can only assume is Ms. Cid) out of her evil influence and, with encouragement from Melfi, she flies up and joins with him. This restores Cid back to his corporal form, but the old lady dies shortly after. After that, he tells the warriors of Castle Sasune's plight: the place is under the control of the Djinn, with Princess Sara trapped in her tower. The heroes decide to go there to save her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The group travels to Castle Sasune where they're attacked by monsters. As they fight them, the Djinn himself arrives and holy moly.
Tumblr media
This is not the Djinn from the games, who  had a few fire spells, but went down easily to some Antarctic Winds. This Djinn is gigantic and boasts all kinds of weird and creepy powers, including blowing up Sara’s tower just by looking at it and plucking monsterous ticks (?!) from his nosehairs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A fight breaks out between the Warriors and the Djinn. Djinni gets rid of Doug, Melfi and J.Bowie by throwing them into magical spheres (Bowie in particularly getting wrecked by it), but Melfi uses her weird nude spirit powers to get them out, although Bowie is in bad enough shape that Melfi has to tap into her white magic to fix him. Meanwhile Muuchi is left to fight against the Djinn and by the end of it, he's left barely standing, though he does manage to toss his sword into the Djinn's eye and cut through one of his legs.
Initially, at the beginning of the fight, the Djinn blew up the tower Sara was in, but during all the commotion later, it turns out that Cid managed to get her out in time. With Muuchi and Doug heavily injured and Bowie outright knocked out, Sara grabs a sword and prepares to fight the Djinn herself. However, Muuchi and Doug aren't quite ready to give in yet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then J. Bowie wakes up... and starts strangling the princess. It would seem that Bowie's been brainwashed by the Djinn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Except not really. He did that to get the Djinn to lower his guard, as well as use Sara's pendent (?) to use a spell to that reseals he Djinn.
Tumblr media
Overall, Cid gets a bit more action and an expanded role. He's also the one companion to appear in all three volumes: Adventuring with the heroes up until Hein's Castle and making a cameo in the final volume. It's not quite as important to the central story as the remake, but overall Cid's more involved here than the original. The Djinn got a big upgrade in the manga. He's the first serious boss in the game (and one you have to fight without jobs in the remake), but here he's able to cause massive devastation to Sasune and overall is far more menacing here. And him being giant is a weirdly meta reference to the usual "boss is normal-sized on the map, but is giant in the actual fight" schtict that FF loves to do,
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, Sara is a downgrade. In the game, Sara's already on her way to try to seal the Djinn in spite of being nervous about it and in the remake, she can even aid in battle. But in the manga, she's held captive by the Djinn and even when she does escape, her contribution to the fight is indirect. Granted, I may have missed something during the fight, because these fight scenes are hard to follow and doubly so when it's all in Japanese, but as is, it doesn't look good for her.
Next Time: Alus Restor. This will be interesting as it will begin the look into the third volume of the manga, also known as "the point where the story goes off the rails", in regard to character portrayals.

hiya so I'm trying to get my friend into spn but she's intimidated by the 13 seasons lol HOWEVER she has agreed to give one episode a try, which would you recommend I start her off on? Sorry to bother u lol
Hello my lovely!
Firstly, no bother at all! Actually, this was a fun prompt. I started making a list of top 2 episodes per season, realised it’d take forever to whittle it down and enlisted the help of darling friends and fellow bloggers @studio82a @elizabethrobertajones and @thevioletcaptain so now you get like the beta zeta gamma meta answer to your question. :P
Right then, I immediately thought - THE PILOT!
You cannot possibly go wrong beginning at the beginning, because that pilot sets up emotional threads and the bro-dynamic which will come to inform the rest of the entire series! This was Lizzy’s thought as well and, yes, we were all in immediate agreement.
Start at the start and take it from there.
So, with this in mind, I’m going to nudge you to intimidate vehemently insist gently ask your friend if your friend is willing to give it two episodes instead of one. See, then they’ll get the joy of the pilot as well as a taster of where the show is headed! *gobble gobble hooked lined and sinkered*
Right, so, foremost suggestion then is the Pilot. Then it got trickier, but we whittled away with our whittles and came up with this list of episodes that are neither to spoiler-y (important!) nor too lacking of substance:
4x07 - It’s the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester
5x03 - Free to Be You and Me
8x08 - Hunteri Heroici
12x09 - First Blood
And I’m going to personally trow 4x01 in there because Lazarus Rising is one of the best episodes this show has produced and Castiel’s introduction, and that entrance, still gives me goosebumps.
It doesn’t give you as much insight into the possibilities of Castiel’s character as 4x07 does, though, which is why 4x07 is on the list above and 4x01 is just getting an honourable mention, but oh boy if you think your friend is the type to respond to the flashes and lights of it all (sparks people SPARKS) I say go for it.
I mean, I was already enjoying my very first binge watch through S1-S3, but when this moment happened I literally sat up from where I’d been lying sick to the bones with the flu for three days and went Holy Moly Things Just Took a TURN HERE. :P Oh, the healing properties of Cas.
There you have it, my dear. And before people come at us going BUT WHAT ABOUT, let me just say that we intentionally left out such classics as Changing Channels and Yellow Fever because we wanted to have a second episode option that featured Cas and the beginnings/the basis of TFW a little more prominently without spoiling too much of the myth arc itself.
Now, friend of mine, I hope you come back and let us all know which episode (hopefully episodes) you settled on and whether your friend got hooked or not. If she didn’t get hooked, please send her to my ask box and we’ll have a serious talk. ;)
Good luck! Crossing fingers! Hope she gets obsessed!! Welcome to the dark side!!! :D
xx

so YOU'RE the one who wrote that kill la kill essay book! i downloaded it ages ago but never got around to reading it fully for whatever reason (I will... one day....) either way it's been super inspirational in that you can just DO that, go and make a book about your fav seies. the other month i wrote a 14k post on a character from a different series i love bc if someone can write a book then I can write a thesis. so thanks for writing a book (even if i havent finished it lol)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The one and only ^^;
I’ll note that I never expected anyone to read the whole thing, though! The book was only ever really intended as a “masterpost” of essays to give folks a convenient place to find any Kill la Kill meta they might be interested in reading. To read the entire collection would be to expose yourself to waaaaay too much repetition, clunky writing, and salt!
I’m super flattered that you found the book inspirational, though, thank you! Honestly, one reason I keep all my old, embarrassing writing on my blog rather than delete it out of shame is because I want to show that formulating meta and analyses is just like any art or other skill: it takes practice. Nobody is just automatically fabulous at articulating their thoughts about stuff—heck, I’m still far, far, far from it—but that’s no reason not to try. You can just write about your favorite thing a bunch and eventually end up with a book! You don’t need any fancy degrees or specialization! And while what you put out may not all be great, every bit helps push you in that direction.
I’m a firm believer that fiction deserves to be talked about because it is important and influential, so I definitely want to inspire others to think critically about fiction with my work. It’s inspiring to me that you felt inspired!
(But holy moly, I can’t say I’ve ever written 14,000 words for one essay. I gotta get on your level!)

TONYMOLY Liptone Get It Tint S 04 Red Hot & 05 Oh My Rose Review:
As a huge fan of Korean boy group Monsta X, imagine how excited I am when TonyMoly announced that they will be collaborating with them! I’m not the one who love Tony Moly lip tints, in fact I rarely used their products and this would be my first time in trying their infamous Get It Tint series. I asked my friend who was in Korea to…
