here is my woefully belated secret samol for @/lightinpitch on twitter! (twt link)
she requested something to do with signet's unseen reliquaries of her own body parts and i was very excited to oblige! i have always been so sad we never got to see those onscreen. some more thoughts + detail shots + design notes under the cut!
so i make pinterest mood/reference/inspiration boards for most big illustrations i do, and this one is by far my biggest one with like 350+ pins on it lmao.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i wanted to avoid just doing catholicism with my reliquary designs and instead wanted a bit of an art nouveau vibe with an emphasis on insect motifs. (teeth reliquary going for the chrysalis shape & heart reliquary going with a butterfly egg shape—the middle one i ended up doing a kind of weird anatomical pattern with the detailing instead, see also the detailing on her gold collar)
Tumblr media
the red jewels are also of course meant to evoke the false eyes on a moth's wings.
the sleeveless over-dress/sarafan i decided on after looking at some replicas of/modernized versions of 17th century russian court dress, but the detailing is meant to evoke a tailed moth (and it also kinda looks like dripping blood, which was an extra bonus because i wanted to keep the suggestion of like. unsettling body stuff). her scalloped sleeves mostly just came from my brain.
Tumblr media
as for the headdress i went back to pham huong's crane crown that janine referenced in her first description of signet's fashion sense, and drew a beetle/scarab riff on it (+ the moth-eye jewels).
if i'd had more time/brain juice i would have loved to do some fun art-nouveau style scrolling/arabesques around the frames and more detail to the dress, but alas. all of these elements i think could make for a really cool visdev project if i had the time and excess creativity, it would be neat to design more reliquaries and outfits and props and stuff... but i doubt i'll ever get around to it lol. anyway thanks for reading!!

Stewjon and Its Peoples
A Complete Guide to the Planet, its Peoples, and its History
[Yes, I went a little bit insane. And yes, I have more projects I should be doing. I know that full well. Here, have a 4k long extrapolation on Stewjoni.]
The Planet;
The Planet Stewjon is an averagely sized, mostly temperate planet with two celestial moons. Its rotation cycle lasts an average of 28 hours, with just under 320 days in a standard rotation around the sun, named Itz by the locals. The planet has three large bodies of water, connected to each other, known as the Great Seas, and most of the world's population sits along the coasts of these seas. Stewjon is seismically active, although only along specific rings, where cities are rarely built above three or four stories. Stewjon is located in the Core, and sits along a defunct Hyperspace Route that fell out of frequent use after the New Sith Wars ended. Stewjon has a standard gravitational pull, a breathable, arable atmosphere, and contains both lush forests, bountiful seas, and polar circles. Winter and Summer are extremes, and the Planet experiences a seven year average water cycle that creates feast and famine. Winter brings snow to the areas of the poles, and summer brings fires to the lands that currently sit along Stewjon’s median line. The earth of Stewjon is rich in metals, but less so than many outer rim planets. However, the true jewel of Stewjon is the planets strange volcanically created crystals and coloured waters that were once a great tourist attraction. These crystals are believed to have been what has caused many of the unexplained phenomena of Stewjon’s long and complicated history.
The People;
There are multiple peoples that consider Stewjon their home world. Before occupation by the Sith, and even earlier, the interference of the Rataka Empire, it is believed that Stewjoni were once a singular race. Genetic research compiled by the Stewjoni Medical Board currently presents that Stewjoni were humanoid in shape, pre-interference, but did not have their quintessentially modern appearances of the current subclasses of Stewjoni. It is currently believed that the first few splits in the species occurred naturally, in the form of the Faedh and the Sidhe.
The Faedh – ancient ancestors to what are now called the Seraphim, or the Sephi – were similar to the so called ‘Angels of Iego’ in appearance. They were commonly tall (standing from six to seven feet when fully grown), with elongated features, and were thought to have glowed slightly in the dark. It is this trait that is believed to have caused them to deviate from the main Stewjoni species. It is indicated in research that not only did they have membranous wings, contrary to other Stewjoni Species with furred or feathered wings, but soft antenna instead of the more common antlers. The major difference between the species has been discovered in ancient burial grounds and upon study of bones and holograph evidence. The Faedh were believed to have been what is now considered ‘Force Sensitive’ in a specifically linear way. Ancient writings from old Stewjoni archives painted people who looked like Faedh to have been Seers, or Prophets. Much like most of Stewjon, Faedh had metallic red hair, and largely opaque, colourful eyes. They were also believed to be non-venomous, which is a possible reason for their exodus off Stewjon, and for leaving the core worlds.
The Sidhe – who are still in existence deep within the Great Woodlands of Stewjon – were small (somewhere from two to three feet in height) and are believed to be the mostly closely related to the ancient Stewjoni genus. Much like the Faedh, they possessed wings, although typically lightly furred. There were the odd exceptions of membrane winged Sidhe, but they were often contained within a small cluster of families in the Deep Woodlands. Sidhe were often colourful, although it is believed they have begun to take the appearance of similar features to their neighbours after the attempted eradication by the Sith. Sidhe often have short little horns instead of full antlers, and usually only sets of two, to four. Sidhe are the longest naturally lived of all of Stewjon’s native species.
The Common Stewjoni (Modern) is typically human in appearance, with a couple of notable differences. Stewjoni, and those with Stewjoni blood, are often easy to medically identify, if hard to spot as a passerby. Stewjoni have two livers, to protect from Stewjon’s many toxins and hazardous wildlife. Stewjoni also have Retinal Tapetum, or reflective irises, although it is unknown why this particular trait emerged in the species. As a species, Stewjoni are often rather diasporic, with certain areas having vastly different common features than others – sea the Saphire Islands, where children will have white hair until they hit puberty, or the Nameless Lands, where many Stewjoni have blue, or even grey skin, despite no relation to Pantorans, or Chiss. One of the common attributes known by outsiders is the Stewjoni ability to, it is believed, ‘breed with anything,’ however this is not strictly true. The reproductive processes of most of the Stewjoni is typically humanoid – much like most warm-blooded species – with a few glaring exceptions. First, are the unusually specific requirements for getting a Stewjoni’s romantic attention. Then the particulars of actually successfully copulating with a Stewjoni. And then, it depends entirely on your and their subspecies whether the egg (yes, egg) is soft shelled, or hard shelled, which in turn changes both how many children will be born, how long gestation lasts for, and whether or not the child will survive infancy. The other common misconception about Stewjoni is their red hair – yes, it is now the dominant trait of Stewjon. However, this trait was specifically engineered to become exclusive by genetic tampering. Red hair was always common, except now it is almost impossible for Stewjoni to have any other hair colour thanks to this fact. It is also believed that the red of the Stewjoni never fades. This is unfortunately untrue in certain circumstances.
The Ancient Stewjoni are beyond living memory, and whilst many have theorised what they would have looked and acted like, the truth is unknown. It is believed that they were a combination of much of modern Stewjon.
Their Biology;
The physical body of most Stewjoni – even those only partially, or adjacently Stewjoni – are often similar. First, most Stewjoni are considered venomous. The venom in question is, truthfully, more of a muscle relaxant and tranquiliser than a true venom, as it very rarely kills by itself. It is believed that Stewjoni gained this ability to help them escape a predator that had pinned them, and run their own prey into exhaustion. It also assists with inter-species relations in many ways – such as being a common ground between many predator and prey species, and being largely helpful in difficult sexual relationships. It is not a true sedative, and cannot be used like the holoporns suggest, either. Stewjoni view unmitigated use as a form of harassment. A form of punishment is the surgical removal of said teeth – very rare, viewed as the worst of punishments.
Modern Stewjoni – if living off world – are required to attend a set of ceremonies during their aging. First, is their official blessing into the community at thirteen, as they believe the beginning of puberty to be a time of celebration. Second, is their seventeenth, often seen as their first forays into learning the ways of the adult warrior. And third is twenty-three, when their body is settling into its more permanent form, seen as the introduction of the person in question to the world as a true adult. Each of these ceremonies coincide with important biological events in Stewjoni life – from the age of thirteen onwards, the children will often be on watch for possible ‘threats’ and have higher than traditionally human aggression levels due to having been heavily hunted by Sith and others at this age. At seventeen, Stewjon allows children to take charge of their own affairs and begin to take steps to leave the nest of their parents, whilst still being a part of the immediate family. Most Stewjoni will become fiercely independent at this age – in their own way, which is still largely communal due to the species’ social needs. And at twenty-three, Stewjoni are often encouraged to travel their world. Once, before the Sith, the histories state that Stewjoni would travel the world and bring back stories, wisdom, and new kin. That is no longer possible under the Isolation Acts enforced by the Republic.
Stewjoni have a close biological relationship with the force. It is incredibly rare for Stewjoni to be born Null. It is also rare for Stewjoni to be particularly powerful. The average midi-chlorian count of Stewjon sits in the range of three thousand to eight thousand midi-chlorians, just under the Jedi Order’s acceptable amount. Admittance to the Jedi Order is often only allowed in the case of special abilities – such as powerful visions, or unusual talents such as disintegration. Due to this, it is often observed that Stewjoni are incredibly sociable, and empathic creatures. The community comes first to a startling degree, and it is common for entire families to spend their lives together. Children are raised communally on most levels of Stewjoni society, due to the biological prerogative of the children of the people being the highest priority. This has such an instinctual drive that most of Stewjons wars, conflicts, and laws almost always directly relate to children, their rights, and the protection of. This unfortunately means that children, left unattended around a Stewjoni out in the galaxy, have a large chance of being spirited away to Stewjon, not to return. This is rare in modern times, but still possible, and difficult to counter when up against an entire planet. (See Stewjon vs The Republic for more details.)
The red of Stewjoni hair is due to a couple of factors. It is first of all, similar to the colouration of the Twi Lek, in which certain shades and patterns travel down family and Clan lines – the blood red hair of one Clan being specifically different to the fluorescent, mildly glowing variety of their close neighbour’s being key example. It is also true that the red of a Stewjoni’s hair should be permanent for their entire life. Only stress, strife, suffering and pain should ever dull a Stewjoni’s hair. If surrounded by loved ones, it is rare for grey hair to do more than pepper a Stewjoni’s hair until the death of a partner, or a child, or other such tragedy, and it is more common for a Stewjoni to die out of grief than for them to continue living past such things. The grieving is a private affair, and many Stewjoni have refused to explain the phenomenon to outsiders, claiming that without the force, they cannot explain such things.
It is said that hair, once cut from a Stewjoni – if provided willingly – will stay as bright as the day it was given as long as the Stewjoni lives. The Jedi Temple has evidence of something suggesting this to be true in the ancient records of the Archives, describing a Master finding their padawan’s braid, coloured white after their death.
The reproductive process of the species is often instigated through external pressures – such as change in season, diet, and circumstance. Many Stewjoni will go through delayed puberty without being forced into fertility. Additionally, the idea of Stewjoni being easy lays is quite far from the truth. Many Stewjoni will take certain behaviours commonly accepted by much of the galaxy – prolonged eye contact – very differently, which causes friction between Stewjoni and their partners. Stewjoni as a species require large family groups to reduce stress and promote a sense of calm and safety. Only young Stewjoni tend to leave home alone, and even then, are often shadowed by older clan members. The adage of ‘If you see one red, there are more unseen’ is very true, and is basis for much of their interactions with the greater galaxy.
Sexual dimorphism is limited in Stewjoni, and almost invisible to outsiders. Many would claim that almost all Stewjoni seem to be the same sex, or similarly shaped, but this is often due to the necessity for their people to blend in amongst each other. Stewjoni, after much of their historical strife, are a preferred target for slavers, as they are considered exotic, and either good slaves or gladiators. Stewjoni are often confused by the question of whether they are male or female, as there is such little difference in their species between one or the other, however. There are some key things to remember. Not all Stewjoni have the appropriate organs to carry, or have children, but the vast majority – well over 80% of the populace – do, which makes the conceptualisation for the differences in gender seemingly meaningless to them. Those who are explicitly only female, or only male, make up less than 40% of the total populace, and it is believed the margin is only going to continue to decline, due to the biological interference of the Sith. It is not uncommon for only those with higher testosterone levels to have facial hair, however, this is not exclusive, or even all together common. Some sections of Stewjon only have hair on their head. Others, like the remaining Sidhe, have a light dusting of metallic fur all over their body, almost translucent. Additionally, modern Stewjoni often only show the more extreme variations of their natural colouring if they complete their coming of age on their home world. It is unknown as to why.
Their Culture;
Religion
It has been observed that Stewjon have a religious relationship with death in a way that most of the Galaxy cannot comprehend. It is often observed that Stewjoni will behave as if their loved ones aren’t dead per se, simply resting, or out of action. There is still a sense of profound grief at the loss of life, especially young, as they believe that the being in question has not yet learned all they needed to proceed to their next life. The religious worldview of the Stewjoni is very cyclical. All things are connected, running into itself like a stream, and there are festivals that celebrate the passing of time of the last rains of the year.
It has been considered a religious requirement for Stewjoni to learn to either dance or fight to appease their ancestors and their gods – to prove they are worthy of the life they have been awarded. It is also considered fair to judge another and their clan on their battle, or physical prowess. Stewjoni must have purpose within the community, even if that purpose is simply to provide company, it is treated with great respect. An example of this would be an ancient story of a warrior who broke their back, and could no longer walk, but continued to tell stories and fables to children until their dying day. They are held as a hero in folklore despite having never won a fight.
Stewjoni believe all things have soul, or life, if loved and known long enough. It has created an interesting conflict between the Stewjoni and their neighbouring planets when it comes to the introduction of droids in day-to-day life. Stewjoni don’t believe in the purchase of droids as you cannot own and purchase people in their beliefs, and due to this, despite their respectful treatment of the automatons, very few droids exist on Stewjon. Additionally, the extremes of Stewjon’s climate tends to destroy unprepared hardware. There are a multitude of religious diasporas on Stewjon, with the practices varying not just from city to city, but from clan to clan. Paint and tattoos on Stewjon have particular cultural and religious significance in certain groups.
Relationship with the force
There are many force sects on Stewjon – before their interactions with the Je’daii order, Stewjon had as many temples as there were cities, but once the fledgling republic discovered the planet and its peoples, a set of skirmishes almost wiped out the religion and force sects off the face of the planet. Fortunately, Stewjoni are first and foremost survivors, and believe in communal knowledge, and it took a Je’daii living undercover for three years to finally be allowed to enter a Stewjoni Temple.
The Modern Temples, further destroyed and tarnished by the ancient Sith battles, fall into a small select systems. The Star Temples, who predominantly teach their disciples how to interact with the great cycles of the universe. The Storm Temples, who teach their disciples to weather great pains and protect their kindred from the affect of outsider magicks. And the Summer, or Sand Temples, who teach their disciples to pull from the ebbs and flows of life and death without enforcing their will onto the world. Only the Star Temples – most specifically, the Star Temple of the Capitol of Waijoni has ever been accessed by a member of the Jedi Order.
It is believed by outsiders that Stewjoni throw away children too strong in the force. This is untrue. Stewjoni are often heavily connected in the force that binds all things, and often entire families can fall into the same nightmare or vision if an untrained Seer lives without shielding. This caused the Stewjoni obsession with Mandalorians, which will be explored in history. The inability for the children to separate from the minds of their family causes some strife, unprepared, or weaker in the force parents often place their children in care until they can come and collect them. However, stewjon is constantly in turmoil, and so children are often swapped between families by choice, by accident, or by force. There fore, to keep the more powerful seers from being poached until they can defend themselves, Stewjoni will often temporarily donate their children to Temples around the galaxy, and come to collect them when able. Other occasions, such as force related illness, can cause mass and sudden abandonment and adoptions as well. This also led to Stewjoni of ancient times racing off into the stars to chase a ‘call’ only to come back with children from around the Galaxy, often taken from unprepared parents.
This has lead to Jedi and Stewjoni being conflated together, being synonymous with ‘Child Stealers’ which is true for one, and not the other.
Whilst most on Stewjon are born with at least more than a passing Force Affinity, those without are often considered safe to send out into the galaxy under modern law, as they will often be able to resist a call from the stars. Ancient Stewjoni Force Sensitives travelled on great ships powered by something the species carefully keeps secret from outsiders, but allows the Null Stewjoni to interact with the force whilst flying said ships. The smaller ships of modern times are fast, agile, and are often spotted in patrols of no more than six, travelling around the galaxy across the ancient passages the Stewjoni People once travelled in their many Force Pilgrimages among the stars.
Language
Due to the frequency of force sensitivity and the incredible empathy of Native Stewjoni, it is believed that the Stewjoni Language only developed so that those who couldn’t sense the force, or outsiders, could communicate with them. This unfortunately means that Stewjon has all the hallmarks of being a pidgin language, and thus has very few completely rigid rules in place. One of the few common conventions is related to writing, and script, which was the basis for the words and their phrasing, however much of Stewjon’s language style was borrowed from others. Such as Ba’va meaning ‘Uncle or Auntie’ or B’ur meaning ‘Mum or Dad.’ There is even significant pidgin from the ancient Je’daii who interacted with Stewjon – such as Dai meaning ‘offworld Force practitioner,’ Je’deyir meaning ‘Outsider’ and Sythe meaning ‘enemy/monster.’
One of the most well-known names out of Stewjon is ‘Obi Wan Kenobi’ after the many historical figures from Stewjon with that name. However, it might surprise you that Obi Wan Kenobi is not a name at all, but a red herring. It was designed, after one of the worst civil wars on Stewjon’s surface, to separate unclaimed, and claimed war orphans. It was supposed to be a way for the child to know that they hadn’t been picked yet. However, outsiders construed the meaning, and took it to indicate the child was unwanted, not unable to be cared for, leaving many Stewjoni who’d been forced from the system with that name when occupied by the Republic into poverty. This of course instigated much of Stewjon’s attitude against the Republic, the Jedi, and the Galaxy. Obi Wan Kenobi means ‘no one, of no clan.’ Which is contrasted by the real meaning for exile, which is ‘Wan Bi Kitrir,’ or Undesirable Person.
It is believed the word ‘Ken,’ for clan, came from the root word for ‘kin.’ Stewjon has no name in the language of its peoples, it is simple titled True Home, or Suti’yon, which was misheard by travellers as Stewjon.
Family and society structure
The importance of family and community in Stewjoni culture has lead to some interesting dynamics not commonly seen in seemingly human species so close to the core worlds. [Unfinished]
Their History;
Early Stewjoni have been documented around the galaxy in eras that long predate the accepted comprehension of space travel. This has led to the belief that ancient Stewjoni utilised vastly different tech to the Rataka Empire long before they encroached on the galaxy. This of course means that even on planets that deny any relation to Stewjon, the quintessential metallic hair and reflective eyes can reappear thousands of generations onwards. It is believed – and perpetuated – that Ancient Stewjoni often travelled to for off worlds in some form of ancient migration or forgotten force practice.
This brings us nicely into their first specific recording. The Pantorans claim that, sometime in the era of 32 000 to 30 000 BBY, a troupe of Stewjoni were in residence to bear witness to the winter solstice festival. They were documented to have stayed a few months, danced, and sung and spoke in a strange, incomprehensible tongue, introduced their magick and technology to the people around them, shared star maps, and left for their next location.
Mandalore states that, sometime around 20 000 to 15 000 BBY, an ancient Manda’lor and another troupe of Stewjoni assisted each other in a great battle against a nameless group of mercenaries preying on the Starships used to house the population of Mandalore at that time. Historians theorise that this may be why the words for magick, force healing, and other non-jedi related variants of the skills began to appear in Mando’a at this time. It also coincides with the Dathomiri beginning to be commonly widespread around the area Mandlore will one day occupy. It is believed that sections of the magick is in some way shared between what Mandalore remembers of Ancient Stewjoni, and what Dathomir has taught them.
Recorded history of real note on Stewjon picks up a written form around the 13 000s, and sometime during this period, Stewjon begins to select a princess – a person who is actually not required by Stewjon to be female, just mistakenly titled that way by outsiders upon meeting – to be the interplanetary advisor between the rest of the Galaxy and Stewjon. Around this time, the ancient Hyper-lane between Stewjon, their nearby branch worlds that would one day be lost to the Sith Lord Nihilus, and Iego would be documented by the Republic, and fiercely defended by Stewjon in what is described as Stewjon’s first real battle on the Galactic Scale.
It is somewhere around this time that Stewjon garners the attention of the fledgling Sith Empire of the era. In 7 000 BBY, Stewjon documents a rapidly rising number of assaults on the edge of what was once ‘their space’ – which under modern laws, they no longer possess – and this caused a number of Stewjoni Warships to be scrambled to meet the assailants.
It is described by many that from 6 000 to 5 000 BBY, after centuries of subtle genetic experimentation and torture, Stewjoni began to disappear from the galaxy. The Republic still hadn’t documented them as a species – and the ancient Jedi order has lost much of the knowledge in the most recent assault on their new Coruscant Temple, and no longer had information of the Species – this meant that when Stewjoni began appearing among the Sith, often enslaved, or Fallen, the Republic simply saw them as tube made creatures from the labs of the Sith, and put them down in the same way. This caused incredible outrage from what remained of the Stewjon at the time, who started a three-way assault on the Jedi, the Republic, and the Sith. It ultimately led to the occupation of their world, and the destruction of their temples, first at the hands of the Sith Empire, and later at the hands of the unknowing Jedi order, who had no precedent for what Stewjoni should have looked like, and almost eradicated the entire species by accident.
In the centuries that followed, Stewjon became incredibly insular, and began to bar entry to outsiders due to the suffering that the Sith and the Republics attempts at eugenics had caused them, leading them to be wary of anyone not outright part of their people. Stewjon had been under Republic occupation for almost a thousand years when the Sith Empire and the Mandalorian Empire went to war with the Republic, and in this time, Stewjon broke free of control, and actively killed any and all republic citizens still in their worlds. Unfortunately, they again attracted the attention of the Sith Empire, and begun to have to fight both just to survive. In the few occasions that Mandalorians and Stewjoni met on this era of battle, it was cold, but respectful – as Mandalorians still told tales of the Stewjoni of old, and some of the more non-human Stewjoni still were prevalent in society.
Stewjon eventually offered support to the republic against the Sith on smaller, closer to coruscant battle fronts that caused the Republic to allow Stewjon to move into true isolation – left alone in the heart of the republic as a non-member world, completely self-sufficient. The Jedi were barred from entering the planet’s space after Darth Nihilis destroyed much of the nearby systems unless they were a Finder. Multiple children were given to the Jedi order at this time, and were also brought back to Stewjon, without their Master, for their coming of age.
When the new Sith Wars began, the Stewjoni sided with the Jedi and the Republic near immediately, resulting in much of the galaxy following suite. After them, midway through the wars, Mandalore also offered their support, which cemented the first official treaty and interaction from Stewjon and Mandalore, resulting in the suspected apprenticeship of a force sensitive from Mandalore in Stewjon’s modern ways. This is the era in which the Mandalorian Houses came into effect – it is believed it is mimicked off of the way Stewjoni states their Temple of Origin after their Clan name, showing their allegiance and beliefs. This is argued against by most modern Mandalorians, specifically the new Mandalorians, who believe that Houses were a step away from Mandalore and Stewjon’s shared barbaric history. Notable Clans from this time were the Asterabi, or the ‘Unflinching,’ the Kestis, or the ‘Blade Family,’ and the Yeneboro, or the ‘Many Shapes.’ It is during this war that the Republic banned all non-Jedi adjacent Force practitioners from Republic space, and with Stewjon’s new alliance, the ‘darker’ Temples on Stewjon were either hidden, emptied, or in the case of the Kestis’, who could not hide their guardianship of the Temples of the Dead, exiled. Most exiles from Stewjon for this reason were immediately given residency on many of Mandalore’s distant worlds. Unfortunately, it means modern Stewjon and modern Iego – the current location for the majority of Clan Kestis – despise the Jedi personally.
At the Ruusan Reformation, and later the Dral Haran (The Republic's assault on Mandalore in a time of peace), Stewjon, and Stewjoni, were barred from elections and from voting. This was proven to be a wise move when the current princess of Stewjon ordered their fleet to rally against one of the supply vessels headed to attack Mandalore. Stewjon has been banned from purchasing large numbers of ships, ammunitions, and transports ever since.
Modern and Current Galactic Impact;
[Unfinished]
[Don't mind me, guys. Doing what I do best. I'll add more to this as I explore the worldbuilding in my writing, but so far, this is what I have. I'll add pictures and references eventually, and hopefully have a semi organized pidgin to explain Obi Wan's naming convention. But that is for a distant horizon.
And for non-Star Wars fans, this is not at all canon, I promise.]
[[Wow, I haven't even gotten to clothes and cuisine yet, haha.]]

First Lines
Tagged by @zealouswerewolfcollector @ettelene @grey-gazania @sallysavestheday @welcomingdisaster (wow!) to share the first lines of my 10 most recent fics and offer some thoughts on any patterns.
A shriek rose from the forest. [Ch. 4 of And Love Grew]
Maitimë’s body is the model of womanly beauty: she is all long curving lines, each joint blending seamlessly into the next; and where the lines break continuity — as at her fine collarbones, her proud cheekbones, the sharp line of her nose — these are as artfully placed cuts upon a gemstone. [Made For Her, rated E]
The night his father rides out over Anfauglith, Fingon does not sleep. [Not in Vain]
Tales come ahead of the heroes. [Worthy]
Why Maedhros had not thought of what he’d actually do on a “first date” with Fingon, he could not explain. [Every inch of my love, rated E]
It was almost two a.m. when they received the dispatch. [Oh everybody waits so long, rated M]
“Do you know what the songs say, of how he removed the jewel from Morgoth’s crown?” [What the Songs Say]
Celegorm woke to the sounds of cheerful humming, followed by the squeal of a kettle and Finrod muttering, “oh no no no, you be quiet!” at the appliance. [Ch. 19 'Tis the Season]
Maglor propped his elbows on his knees and leaned over the board. [Ch. 18 of 'Tis the Season]
Maedhros woke to the trickle of water and the twitter of birds. [Ch. 17 of 'Tis the Season]
Patterns... I often try to use unusual syntax in the first line, and to establish a scene or mood, without giving all the information, all in as few words as possible. I don't often open with dialogue (#7 is drabble), though I like this as an opening I find it challenging to fit setting and exposition in naturally afterwards. Something I hadn't realised is how often I open with a sound (1, 8, 10).
Type of opening also depends on the genre. #2 is smut and gets right into with a lavish description of the character's body. My modern AU fics (#5, 6, 8-10) are less creative about syntax, focusing on telling the story over playing with language.
Getting the first line on the page takes me, like, ten minutes to several days of mulling ideas (yes, I know I could just start and write a first line later but that's hard), so I have thought about this a lot lol.
Please, anyone who is interested in doing this go ahead and tag me! I love reading these.

Another painting of Mary I+bit about portraits with cloth roll
While i am excited to find the auction painting was not known to most of you, of course majority of portraits of Mary I are copies of already known portraits. Still, i think it is good if we keep spreading information of all known versions, because then we are more aware what jewels were in royal collections and how royals looked under hands of different artists.
So here is version you might have not seen yet
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Painting on board before and after repair
I found it on this webpage:
Where it is stated the article is reproduced from The Building Conservation Directory, 2005. So i am not sure where the pictures originate and what is with copyright of them.
However clearly this is yet another painting with cloth roll beneath, and each of Mary's has different chest brooch. Interesting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The original set of English Queens with cloth rolls was from 1560s and consisted of
-Mary I(above)
-Elizabeth of York
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
-Catherine of Aragon,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-Anne Boleyn,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
-Jane Seymour
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Possibly Elizabeth Woodville as well, though i am not sure if she wasnt later addition.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because she is only depicted with plainer red cloth and that is the later set of paintings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fabric of the original set seems to match patterns popular in early reign of Elizabeth(which was likely mass produced pattern of fabric, sold across half of Europe).
Lastly...the portrait of Cecily of York with cloth rolls seems like a modern creation using the cloth roll from painting on right:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hope you have enjoyed this, and if you guys know of any more versions of cloth roll paintings, write to me, send pictures, i will truly apreciate it.

Previews down here:
Small Town Bar
Joel hasn't changed much since you left. His life has settled into a predictable routine. Each morning, he wakes up, dressing in the same plaid flannel and faded blue jeans, eating the same cereal for breakfast, with the same bowl and spoon every single day. The routine continues as he gets into his car, a weathered but reliable companion. The engine hums to life, and with a practiced motion, Joel reaches for the mixtape you made him all those years ago. The cassette slides into the player, and the familiar tunes fill the car, creating a comforting cocoon of nostalgia around him.
Speed Dating
Joel Miller has never been one for modern technology or social conventions, but with a little nudging from his brother Tommy, he finds himself standing outside the bar in Jackson, waiting for a speed-dating event to begin. He can't help but fidget with the worn-out bracelet on his wrist as he looks at the other participants. He takes a deep breath, reminding himself that he's doing this for experience and to keep an open mind.
As the organizer explained the rules, he spots you sitting at a table across the room. Joel's curiosity is piqued, you're new here. He knows everyone to a degree that stays here in Jackson, at least their name but you, you're new.
Soft daddy / Italy trip same pairing from whos your daddy and bad habits
As you start your summer adventure in Italy, you can feel the excitement building up inside of you. You never expected that you'd be traveling with an older man like Joel, but as you think back to your time with him, you can't help but feel a sense of contentment that you've never felt prior. You know that he's going to take care of you, and you can't wait to see what kind of adventures he has planned.
Joel's plane tickets are first class, and as you board the plane, you can't believe how luxurious everything is. You're immediately struck by the opulence of the interior. The plane is decorated in rich, warm tones, with plush leather seats and polished wood accents. The overhead compartments are lined with soft, velvet material, and the aisles are carpeted in a deep, jewel-toned hue.

Hello! First, happy belated birthday!! Hope you had a beautiful day!! Then, congrats on your milestone!! ❤️
I decided to participate and send you this:
🍹- "It was all in my head" - Send me a character and I'll give you a headcannon about them.
With Alfie, please! Because I love him 😅❤️. Thanks in advance! 😘
Hello Flor darling! Thank you so much for your kind words and for requesting! ☺️❤️
I hope you enjoy these random headcanons i’ve come up with for our lovely Alfie!
Tagged: @shelbydelrey If you want to send an ask to be added to the list!
Random Alfie Solomons Headcanons:
Tumblr media
Alfie is a foodie! He will take any opportunity to go out to a nice restaurant and have a good meal
I also see him cooking a lot- he likes to find new recipes and try them out while also sticking to recipes that have been in his family for years! Sometimes he’ll tweak them a little just to see if he can make it his own.
When he does try out new recipes he will always ask the person he trusts the most (you) to taste test it for him! He trusts you to be honest with him and genuinely wants to know what he can do better for next time.
If you love it he gets all excited and giddy, he’ll make it for you whenever you ask- for Alfie, food is the way to his heart!
Modern! Alfie would have a Pinterest board with a bunch of random recipes he would love to make one day (it has well over 300 pins)
Alfie would be interested in Philosophy- I see him contemplating the meaning of life at least once a day! He also believes the best questions are the ones without a true answer.
He can go on for hours honestly and likes to see what others think- but if he sees no logic in their thinking he will go out of his way to make whoever said it feel dumb.
Unless he has a soft spot for them- then he will try to press them to explain further. Particularly on why they think that way- he finds it interesting.
Alfie is a collector- he has an eye for antiques and other nicknacks and after he acquires them he displays them like trophies
His shelves are full of random artifacts he’s collected throughout the years
The more expensive things he has locked up safe- family heirlooms, jewels, historical artifacts he won’t show these to anyone unless he trusts you fully
Modern! Alfie would love romcoms
He would never admit it though
The first time you ask him to watch one with you he would be like:
“Oi! Turn this shit off”
But then once he gets into it he’ll start making little comments about the couple in the movie- like at the climax when the couple gets into an argument or before they realize they love each other
“She’s in love with you, you bloody idiot! I tell you what, yeah? If i were there i’d punch him right in his face until he wakes the hell up!”
He would absolutely cry at the end but he’d excuse himself the bathroom to do it- no way would he be seen crying over a movie.
Alfie loves animals! We know Cyril, but if Alfie saw an animal abandoned out on the street, he’d leave some food for them.
If the animal kept showing up he would have to talk himself out of simply just picking it up and bringing it home.
He would eventually but has to stop after a point because his house is turning into a zoo, he would never leave an animal to suffer however- he would find them a good home if he couldn’t bring them in himself.

Kasjory
4. Which one is more protective? Who needs to be 'protected'?
5. Describe their cozy night in.
6. Who would beg the other not to leave? Who has to leave to protect the other?
7. Would they build a pillow fort together just because?
30. Your OTP gets to pick out each other's outfits; what is each wearing?
36. Who's more likely to fire up the stove at 2am because the other woke up in the middle of the night hungry?
NOTE: For most of these, I'm describing my headcanons for late-stage Kasjory, like IBS onward. Some stuff might be different in like Season 1 when they're new to their relationship.
4. Which one is more protective? Who needs to be 'protected'?
Tumblr media
Depends entirely on who you ask, because they both firmly believe that they're being entirely reasonable and the other one obviously needs to be protected. This has a 50/50 chance of happening at the beginning of any major battle.
(In reality: Kas is squishier but Jory runs headfirst into danger more often. They've both gotten their fair share of injuries and combat experience, so it's about even.)
5. Describe their cozy night in.
I think Kasjory would be a fan of puzzles, board games, cards, stuff like that given they're both curious people with a decent knowledge background. If they lived in modern times, they'd probably save up newspaper crosswords. Marjory gets way too competitive about it, while Kas is mostly there for the fun and social element. In the rare peaceful night in, they'll grab some food and wine, play a bunch of games, probably have a stupid fight over whatever Tyria's equivalent of Monopoly is, and then Kas will get tired and Jory will carry her up to bed and read to her until she falls asleep.
6. Who would beg the other not to leave? Who has to leave to protect the other?
Ohhhh man, I think they've both pulled this shit at one point or another. It's the nature of being a hero of Tyria, sadly. Most of the time when they claim to leave as protection they're actually kidding themselves, and they'd function way better as a team. Kas is definitely more LIKELY to be in the begging role, and less likely to leave, especially given Jory's typical response to emotional problems is to run away from them. There were definitely a few times in late Icebrood and shortly after Belinda's death where Kas felt pretty abandoned.
Of course, this is evened out by the one really big time Kas left Jory behind:
Tumblr media
7. Would they build a pillow fort together just because?
Yes. Kas decides to do it on a lark and eventually talks Jory into helping. Jory then gets way too into making a "worthy" pillow fort, and they wind up with a pillow fortress. Which they then have to sleep in for three days because it's way too big and cool to destroy, and also all their bedding is tied up in it.
30. Your OTP gets to pick out each others' outfits; what is each wearing?
Hah, I know you answered this one about a year ago, and I agree with your assessment for Kasmeer. No way Jory would pass up turning her into the goth girlfriend of her dreams. I took a few creative liberties, made her taller because heels, and also gave her that little blood-ruby necklace thing I saw on the hellsite a while back, because it's too perfect.
I think Kas has a little more consideration for Jory's own fashion sense by putting her in a few darker colors - though it's jewel tones instead of black. Her hair is down because Kas loves to run her hands through it, and the sleeves are missing so all the muscles she's gained from wielding a greatsword are on display. She's got motifs of snakes and skulls woven in there. Beyond that though, Kas's biggest victory is managing to drag Jory out to some fancy party, something she'd never be caught dead doing otherwise.
Tumblr media
36. Who's more likely to fire up the stove at 2 AM because the other woke up in the middle of the night hungry?
Kas is usually asleep by 2 AM, but if night owl Jory wants a midnight snack she knows she has to make it for two, because Kas will inexplicably wake up at the smell of food just to demand her portion. After all they've been through, they both wake up with nightmares fairly regularly, and it's not uncommon for them to shake the other awake for comfort, which often includes food or a cup of hot tea. If Kas is making the food it's going to be pancakes at 2 AM though, because breakfast food and dessert is basically all she knows how to make.

what do u think modern revalink would wear!! me personally I think link is either plain tshirt + cargo shorts every day of the week or crop tops and backless shirts and layers of jewelry, no in between 💀 and revali definitely thrifts bc he thinks it makes him look cool, he probably has 100 pinterest boards of outfits he wants to try, honestly if he wasn't so interested in pursuing flight school he might go into fashion 😭 OH he definitely owns a pair of aviator sunglasses, also I just get fur coat vibes from him
CARGO SHORTS HAHAHHA THAT'S VERY LINK VIBES FOR SURE!!!! like link either dresses like a dad or he's showing so much skin pastors everywhere are sweating. casually, link wears the most random graphic tee + sweatpants or old PE shorts from high school LMFAOKJDHFJKD and also flip flops. if he's feeling a little fancy he has the most beat-up pair of white airforce 1s. i lowkey think he has a pair of black af1s that he keeps in mint condition and wears on ~special occasions~ but i Love love LOVE the idea of link wearing crop tops, backless shirts, and jewelry omg 😭🤍 he only wears stuff like that also for special occasions like the usual job interview or date night with revali <3 u know that meme that's like. Steal the Look! $2,450 and it will be like Shirt -$30, Pants - $45, Shoes - $80, Lingerie Set - $2,325 because that's totally link. tell me he's not wearing the sexiest lingerie under his date night outfit like COME ON NOW! but i also believe in link wearing a lot of oversized hoodies, big shirts, and baggy jeans etc he's very stylish and in with the trends
I AGREE WITH REVALI THRIFTING he believes in sustainable clothing and Only wears clothes he's thrifted or are from sustainable and environmentally friendly companies. he actively despises those tiktok girlies who thrift and resell on fucking depop for like 100x the price like he calls them out and roasts them in an 45 min long youtube video 😭 it's so humiliating for them that some of the tiktok girlies be deleting their accounts...... i love the pinterest board stuff too, i have one of just clothes and outfits i think are neat and want, but revali has like 20 different boards for outfit ideas based on 20 different and specific vibes. revali believes in always looking his best before he leaves the house and regularly dresses like wisdom kaye or, i specifically thought of these concept photos of taehyung from proof since you mentioned fur coat? revali makes link match with him for a date night so link ends up wearing jungkook's outfit from the same concept photos. god these men r fine asf WHEWWW! revali is just as broke as the rest of us but he LOOKS rich with the way he pairs clothing together
yes to revali's aviator glasses but link makes fun of him for wearing them inside and revali's is like IT'S FOR THE AESTHETIC!!!!!!!! link wears bucket hats because i said so. idc argue with the wall for this one he would look so cute in a bucket hat and revali thinks so too. he has so many pictures of link in a bucket hat on his phone. they both have platform doc martens, link has the boots and revali also has boots but also the oxfords.
revali has a bomber jacket from his grandfather who was a pilot. link likes to steal it sometimes because it's oversized and smells like revali <3
link learned how to crochet for funsies and made revali a bright blue scarf as a gift, and revali was so touched he centered every single outfit he wore for the next two weeks around the scarf (dw he washed it, he's a clean freak). like revali cherishes it so much he has it displayed in their house 😭
last one for now and i'm gonna project even more onto link, but he luvs jewelry. he looks especially good in gold, but he rocks any piece he wears. he has so much jewelry, revali built him a whole vanity with multiple drawers and storage space for all of the jewelry. revali randomly gets him jewelry as gifts every now and then, and he always gets it custom-crafted by a jeweler who's a friend of urbosa. link almost always wears the first necklace that revali ever gifted him for his birthday and it's beautiful sapphire wrapped in gold. also link wears a body chain under his crop tops sometimes and revali is obsessed with it he cannot keep his hands off of link's waist or his eyes away from the way the chain glints against link's tummy :)

I'm a writer and I really like to make fashion boards for my characters to help develop them. I'm working on a character who's a witch in college whose style I think is best described as "witchy bohemian." Do you have any ideas for that? She's in her early 20s, fairly feminine, and prefers to wear black and jewel tones like emerald, eggplant, burgundy, and dark blue. She also likes to accessorize and is a hat person (but I think most modern witches are hat people tbh). Thank you so much!
What a fun character!
I think lots of layers, heavy shawls with intricate stitching, big sleeves, loosely gathered hair, dark leather shoes, I think overall her outfits would feel like vintage thrift, except they're pieces she pulled from her grandmothers closet and/or sewed and modified herself.

20 questions for fic writers!
Thanks for the tag, @thotpuppy! I've been thinking about this off and on the last couple of days. I really do enjoy this sort of thing, both reading others and making my own. Blank after the cut.
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
135. 23 of which are drabbles
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
354,120 total, all since the beginning of 2020
3. What fandoms do you write for?
The big ones are Teen Wolf and Black Jewels., but I also write Perilous Courts and The Hollows, along with some other assorted SFF book fandoms. I have a lot of Men's Hockey RPF fics, but rarely revisit the fandom. Spideypool's another fandom I fell out of at some point.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Tell Me No Lies (Spideypool, 5k. Explicit, grocery store meet-cute)
my heart was connected (Teen Wolf Steterek, 11k. Explicit. fake SO for the holidays that grew legs and ran away with me)
I give hell my worst (Spideypool, 5.5k. Explicit, merman Peter Parker and pirate Wade Wilson)
just give me one thing that I can hold onto (Teen Wolf Sterek, 9k, Explicit, Derek and Stiles keep waking up naked in the woods)
Joke's On You (The Witcher, Emralt, 12k, soulmates get married for Reasons)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try to respond, but sometimes it takes me a while, especially when I have a lot I want to say.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Probably it kind of vanishes away (Teen Wolf Dargent, 866 words, Explicit, two sad and lonely men getting off together)
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I don't know what I would say is the happiest, so I'm going to go with the kitten is happy (Perilous Courts Julien/Whisper, 300 words, Gen) because it's the most unequivocally happy ending I've written in ages.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
No, I've been pretty fortunate. I've gotten a few shitty comments, but nothing I felt the need to dwell on. Another commenter yelled at someone for one of them once, months after the fact. That made me laugh.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Yes. I don't know what this means by kind, exactly. I write a lot of wall/door sex and work knotting in whenever possible, especially if I can make it accidental.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
As a general rule, no, but I did co-write a Spideypool/Men's Hockey RPF one where Peter Parker was the guy inside the Gritty suit.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
nope
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
nope
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Just the one mentioned in #10
14. What’s your all time favourite ship?
Daemon Sadi/Lucivar Yaslana from Black Jewels
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Black Jewels modern AU of sorts where magic comes back and I strip out all of the gender bullshit
16. What are your writing strengths?
Characterization is my greatest strength, without doubt. I'm also good at writing banter and funny moments during smut.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I'm really bad at planning ahead or sticking to a plan I've made. I think overall it's worked out in my writing, but it can get me in trouble during the process. Plot in general isn't a major strength for me.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I've done a curse or two, but in general I avoid it both because I don't speak any other languages and because I don't think there are many good ways to incorporate translations.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Technically, it's probably the Wheel of Time message board RP I did on Dragonmount in the nineties, but if we're talking about actual fan fiction it's Men's Hockey RPF.
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Man, this wasn't easy. I genuinely enjoy my writing and reread my stuff a lot. I'm going to have to go with no words needed (Black Jewels Daemon/Lucivar, 565 words, Explicit, zero dialogue smut with wink kink) because it's different and because I like it more every time I read it.
I'm going to tag @calenlily, @dear-massacre, @mswhich, @pterawaters, and @alondradina, but would love to see anyone else's answers too!

Round One Match-ups
Tumblr media
Okay! So I tried to do an image to show the brackets, but some of these ship names are so long that it made the the image actually illegible (looking at you, Sonic/Amy/Knuckles/Rouge/Shadow)
So, what I've done is arranged the match-ups as if there was an image, so you can read which side of the board each ship will be on and you'll all have to use your imaginations for the visuals. In Round Two, there definitely will be an image, as then I'll be able to use the ship icon instead of text, meaning the names can be as long as they want lol
Round One will take place over several days, with 8 polls being posted a day until it is complete. The first batch of polls will be posted on Monday 24th April at around 4-5pm GMT
Below is the list of match-ups, as well as some notes about them:
TOP LEFT:
Sonic/Amy vs Sonic/Amy (Modern) Sonic (Nicky)/Amy vs Sonic (Werehog)/Amy Sonic/Amy (Boom) vs Sonic/Amy (Fleetway) Sonic/Amy/Knuckles vs Sonic/Amy/Shadow Sonic/Amy/Sally vs Sonic/Amy/Tekno vs Sonic/Amy/Tikal Sonic/Antoine vs Sonic/Antoine (SatAM) Sonic/Ash vs Sonic/Mina Sonic/Breezie vs Sonic/Merna vs Sonic/Bartleby
BOTTOM LEFT:
Sonic/Shadow vs Sonic/Shadow (Sir Lancelot) Sonic/Shadow (Boom) vs Sonic/Shadow/Tikal Sonic/Chilidogs vs Sonic/no one vs Sonic/Big the Cat Sonic/E-123 Omega vs Sonic/E-77 Lucky vs Sonic/X Robot Sonic/Eclipse vs Sonic/Metal Sonic Sonic/Honey vs Sonic/Tiara Sonic/Infinite vs Sonic/Silver Sonic/Jewel vs Sonic/Lanolin
TOP RIGHT:
Sonic/Knuckles vs Sonic/Knuckles (Sonic X) Sonic/Knuckles (Archie) vs Sonic/Knuckles (Frontier) Sonic/Knuckles (Boom) vs Sonic/Knuckles the Dread Sonic/Knuckles/Rouge vs Sonic/Knuckles/Rouge (Sonic X) vs Sonic/Amy/Knuckles/Rouge/Shadow Sonic/Knuckles/Shadow vs Sonic/Shadow/Silver Sonic/Kirby vs Sonic/Miku Sonic/Mario vs Sonic/Mega Man Sonic/Mighty vs Sonic/Mighty (Post-SGW Archie)
BOTTOM RIGHT:
Sonic/Sally vs Sonic/Sally/Shadow Sonic/Sally (Archie) vs Sonic/Sally (SatAM) Sonic/Jet vs Sonic/Tekno Sonic/Elise vs Sonic/Madonna Sonic/Blaze vs Sonic/Blaze (IDW) Sonic/Mike vs Sonic/Swifty vs Sonic/Sticks Sonic/Rouge vs Sonic/Fiona Sonic/Scourge vs Sonic/Surge
I know that it's not possible to keep everyone happy with the way match-ups are done in these tumblr tournaments. But here are a few notes about why I chose to do these match-ups the way I have here:
Where possible, ships with similar themes have been paired together for Round One, e.g. "The same ship in different continuities", "ships where all characters are from the same cartoon", "ships that both involve green birds", etc.
As the ships that had the highest amount of nominations, SonAmy and SonKnux have been placed on the opposite sides of the board to each other, in the top left and top right. As much as possible their related ships have been groups with them so that the strongest version of both will go forward
As the ship that had the third highest nominations, Sonadow has been placed in the bottom left. As the ships with the next highest amount of nominations, SonSal, SonJet, SonBlaze and SonElise have been placed in the bottom right. As much as possible their related ships have been groups with them so that the strongest version of each will go forward (this only really applies to Sonadow and SonSal tbh)
The rest of the ships that received less nominations have been used to fill out the rest of the spaces on each side and are mostly arranged alphabetically in order of the first ship in the bracket
In order to keep Round One to 32 matches, there will be a few threeway matches between ships that received less nominations. These matches are as follows:
Sonic/Amy/Sally vs Sonic/Amy/Tekno vs Sonic/Amy/Tikal Sonic/Knuckles/Rouge vs Sonic/Knuckles/Rouge (Sonic X) vs Sonic/Amy/Knuckles/Rouge/Shadow Sonic/Breezie vs Sonic/Merna vs Sonic/Bartleby Sonic/Chilidogs vs Sonic/no one vs Sonic/Big the Cat Sonic/E-123 Omega vs Sonic/E-77 Lucky vs Sonic/X Robot Sonic/Mike vs Sonic/Swifty vs Sonic/Sticks

Rhys’s Pieces: Interview with ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’ Actor Rhys Darby
by: Jesse Rifkin • December 20 2017
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, one of the most anticipated films of this holiday season, stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black as players who accidentally get sucked into a dangerous videogame world of magic and attacking animals.
Rhys Darby portrays Nigel, a guide to the newcomers in the videogame world, who entrusts them with their mission: returning a sacred jewel called the Jaguar’s Eye to the distant statue where it belongs. Darby is best known to American audiences for comedic roles as Jim Carrey’s boss in Yes Man and inept band manager Murray Hewitt in the 2000s HBO show Flight of the Conchords.
Ahead of the film’s December 20 theatrical release, Darby spoke to Boxoffice about filming in Hawaii, the children’s book he started writing on the set, and how his training in the New Zealand Army helped prepare him for the role.
What was it like working with this cast?
Amazing. The Rock is so huge in every way. He has a connection to New Zealand. He actually went to a school in New Zealand when he was a kid. And he’s from Samoa. [Johnson is of Samoan heritage, though he was born and primarily raised in America.] So there was kind of a spiritual connection there. I felt like I already knew him. When we hung out a bit on set, he knew who I was from Conchords. He was very upbeat and fun to be around.
Was it disappointing working with The Rock, after you grew up in New Zealand which already has the world’s largest rock?
That’s in Australia. You’ve got to do your research!
I did my research. I am speaking to Hugh Jackman, right?
Absolutely! [Laughs.]
What was it like shooting in Hawaii? Had you ever been there before?
That’s right, Oahu. I had been a few times. I love Hawaii, it’s a very special place. So it was fantastic to be able to shoot there. I do this TV show called Wrecked [airing on TBS, about a group of people stranded on an island] and we film on a tropical island as well. We started in Puerto Rico, then we did season 2 in Fiji. So I feel like a lot of my acting work seems to be in tropical islands.
When you were a soldier in real life, where were you stationed? Were you ever on an island then?
I was on the island of New Zealand! [Laughs.] I was in the north island, then the south island. But I never left New Zealand with the army.
Did you use any of what you learned as a soldier when performing your role as Nigel? He’s a tough guy trekking in nature.
It’s really a mind fit, that kind of outdoorsman. I’ve certainly been that in the past. I enjoy adventure, it’s one of the things I do. I mean, I’ve climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in real life. I’ve wandered through Rwanda looking for mountain gorillas. So for me, those kind of experiences, wearing that kind of outfit and driving a Land Rover, is almost second nature. I used to drive Land Rovers in the New Zealand Army.
Did you see the original Jumanji when it was released in 1995? How much were you guys trying to go for an original Jumanji vibe, versus doing your own thing?
I think I probably saw it a few years later, on video. They liked to keep the spirit of the original, but definitely do a new thing. We couldn’t copy the original, that one was so good. This was rebooting the world, but modernizing it and turning it into a video game. That was the big difference, which I think is going to be great for the kids. I’d love to say that board games are coming back, and I think they might be. But I know most kids can relate to the video game concept more.
You co-host a podcast called The Cryptid Factor, about fictional or mythical animals. Were there any that you tried to get included in this film? Which mythical animal would you have most wanted to see included?
In the Jumanji world, there are pretty regular animals, except they’re a lot bigger than in real life. So they are gigantic and they seem to be a bit possessed. They’re quite dangerous. If I was to add any animal into this world, it would be something like the Mongolian death worm. [The animal, rumored but never confirmed, is an enormous worm supposedly residing in the Gobi Desert]. That would have fit in there. Obviously, it wouldn’t be Mongolian. Maybe the Jumanjian death worm.
What’s your best Jack Black story?
Nick Jonas [the superstar pop singer who plays a pilot named Jefferson “Seaplane” McDonough] contacted me and invited me out to dinner with Jack Black. We went out and had dinner one night. That’s the only context in which the three of us would ever be together!
I didn’t hang out with those guys [the stars of the cast] or anything like that. I was mostly just alone in my hotel. I only worked about seven days, but I was trapped in Hawaii for two months, because the scenes I was in were predominantly either in the Land Rover or some other backstory scene wandering through the jungle. They were waiting for it to rain to film my scenes, for some reason. It was all very weirdly determined. And it never rained! So I just sort of waited, going slowly insane. Then finally I got brought on to the set.
That must have been terrible, spending two months in paradise not working but still getting paid.
I spent that time writing a book! It hasn’t come out yet. It’s a children’s book. I’m still working on it. It’s an adventure book about a 12-year-old who goes on this crazy adventure to find his parents.
Your standup has generally been pretty alternative, Flight of the Conchords was rated TV-MA, [Darby’s previous film] What We Do in the Shadows was rated R. Now you’re doing a children’s book and a family movie. Is this a new direction you’re trying to go in your career?
I naturally go towards stuff that is more friendly, less violent. I think it’s just the jobs I’ve gotten. I also do Voltron [a Netflix original animated series in which Darby voices the royal advisor Coran]. That lets me do funny character work that all ages can enjoy. I’ll do whatever is funny. If we can keep that in the zone for younger people to laugh at as well, that actually means I have to be cleverer.
AT THE MOVIES
What is your favorite moviegoing memory or experience?
It would have to be going back to childhood, seeing Return of the Jedi in this amazing cinema in Auckland called The Civic. It’s gloriously decorated on the inside. It has gold lions on stage whose eyes light up. The whole ceiling is kind of like space, it’s all twinkling stars. You feel like you’re in another world. I got to see Return of Jedi there when I was young, on the big screen. I also saw Indiana Jones in that same theater. So those two.
And your favorite snack at the movie theater concession stand?
Oh, wow. For me, it’s a combination of ice cream and popcorn. So I get the popcorn and then I like to get a vanilla ice cream, or what they call a Choc Top in New Zealand. [The treat consists of soft serve ice cream dipped in a hard chocolate coating, served inside a waffle cone.] You can bite into it, then you just dip it into the popcorn. So you end up with popcorn sticking onto your ice cream and you can eat them both.

Another Day. Another Inuyasha Themed Plot Bunny with a Super Lame Video to get your attention. Huzzah.
November InuPrompts Here
More plot bunnies Here & Here
PLOT BUNNIES - DIRECTION:
The group bickers over which way is best. Turns out none of them are best and all routes chosen are unpassable.
PLOT BUNNIES - HEADCANON
Inuyasha’s got 99 problems but pain ain’t one. In his half-demon form, Inuyasha literally cannot feel pain. Oh, his body still knows he’s been injured and he cannot escape the inevitable side effects that accompany blood loss/poisoning but that’s not pain.
Like the domesticated dog, Inuyasha is color blind. Specifically red-green colorblind because why not? He might not see any color at all. Maybe it’s only blue-yellow. Up to you. Run with it.
As a human, Inuyasha needs glasses which is why he feels blind. For inspiration on how that might look, see this Tiktok.
Gramps has a doctor friend who manufactures evidence of Kagome’s illness so child protective services or truancy court won’t get involved. The friend is like Fox Moulder from X-files and desperately wants to believe demons are out there.
A fully grown Shippo works for the school board and constantly has to brush Kagome’s absences under the rug.
Hojo knows exactly who and what Inuyasha is due to his family’s meticulous organization and record keeping habits. That’s why he keeps asking Kagome out even though she clearly isn’t interested. He wants to ask her point blank when they’re alone.
In his advanced age, Sesshomaru is the one who purchased and bequeathed the Higurashi shrine because his daughter eventually finds her way there and he wants to make up for his shitty parenting or, really, the lack of parenting.
Gramps does have spiritual powers. He just holds back and acts a fool so no one believes Kagome does.
Inuyasha loves cats but has never been stable enough to have a pet. In the course of his life post-quest eventually ends up the male equivalent of a cat lady because he wants to make up for lost time. “Inuyasha, please, we don’t need another…” *Inuyasha emerges from the cat pile* “DON’T TELL ME HOW TO LIVE MY LIFE WOMAN”
There is a demon version of the Men in Black who swoop in every time Inuyasha & Kagome have a modern day misadventure.
Inuyasha doesn’t curse - much - because his mother was very clear. Murder okay. Cursing bad.
Mama Higurashi & Gramps know exactly what happens in the quest thanks to some old records. The entire time they knew and that’s why they’re okay with their teenage girl hopping through the well.
The school friend who wrote the Ode to Joy ripoff about the Sacred Jewel is one of the group’s descendants.
