#misogyny sexism racism homophobia all of it
Text
dear professional wrestlers,
you do not have to make ableist, misogynistic, xenophobic, racist, homophobic, transphobic, or any other type of discriminatory comments about your opponents to either establish yourself as the heel or otherwise "dominate" in your promos.
you can be a villain without being an asshole. you can dominate without discriminating. you can win without crushing minoritized fans beneath your boots.
making comments like "I'll help you with your speech impediment" alienates viewers with speech impediments. making vulgar "jokes" about a Japanese man's name alienates Japanese fans. calling a woman in the audience fat, defining peak masculinity by telling your opponent to "ask your girlfriend how long I can go" - and on and on and on.
you are smarter than the lowest form of cheap pop. and your audience deserves better.
sincerly,
a disabled, queer, trans fan who loves wrestling and just wants it to love them back

As shown by these last few weeks (or since the beginning of time) this country obviously hates women, add in the fact that she’s black and gay and she can just be detained in Russia for months with actually little to no urgency to do anything about it from people outside of her communities … a mfin joke 🙄
I’m under the impression that Brittney had to plead guilty in order to do a prisoner swap but it’s crazy that it took this long AND she wasn’t able to have a phone conversation with her wife this ENTIRE TIME ! WHAT THE HELL !?
and to all the dudes who are saying shit like “if it were lebron I’d break him out myself” and all that other shit … he’s not gonna f*ck you babes 🖤

so like are we done with the idea that james is a victim of the internet harassment mob or whatever you guys like to call it when in reality no one like forced him to be part of the public eye again. he had multiple times to disengage but he threw himself head first into the spotlight with some half assed apology where he used his dead mom, illiterate dad, and like 293 mental illnesses that he was in the right to do a widdle plagiarism but it’s not his fault! it’s everyone else’s fault for not being nice to him about it!!! how dare these people bring these issues to the public not thinking how james would feel about it! like ppl are forgetting there was notable period of time james went off air entirely. and every time he’s jumped back it’s always attempts to paint himself as the victim.
like be real for a second if anyone was weaponizing the internet harassment machine it was james somerton. he knew what he was doing when he posted that note. he knew the shit his victims would get for having the crime of (checks notes) voicing out their issues with him. he knew there’s people out there who are foaming at their mouths to use anything they can get their hands on as a “gotcha!” at hbomberguy (right wing people yes, but don’t act like it’s just them i’ve seen plenty of lefties trying to prove they’re superior to harry). they don’t give a shit about james, not really. he’s the dude who hbomb did a “hit piece” (yes that’s a term i’ve seen people use) and that’s what matters.
not to mention the writing that’s also very clearly targeting nick who’s basically cut ties with him at this point. james pushed all the burden on nick by saying it’s their fault, actually. he’s one of the co-writers and everything going to shit was nick’s fault when they had the audacity to move. james is faultless! with james still trying to monetize stolen content on the blatant lie that he’s doing this for nick’s sake as a portfolio. acting as if nick isn’t an sentient human being who could upload their own content, as if nick would even want to be associated with james at this point. this isn’t a teenager being harassed for an honest mistake, this is a 35-year old con artist who’s stolen hundreds of thousands and peddled the most vile shit as actual history but realized he was in deep shit and weaponizes very serious mental health issues as a “i’m just a poor little gay baby!! my alter ego did it!!!”
for the record if you’re among the people who tried to wash down james’ crimes as “he just did plagiarism!! it wasn’t that bad of a crime!” fuck you, man. i’m not kidding.
the fact i’ve witnessed people whitewash his acts of racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, antisemitism and misogyny (in fact i’m probably still missing a few things here), and say he’s being harassed by the internet just because he stole articles makes it so clear they have no fucking idea what they’re talking about. his shit isn’t fucking erased just bc he realized that he has to handle the consequences. he’s grasping at anything he can at this point to make sure that even if he’s not coming back, he’s sure as hell trying to take anyone he fucking can down with him.
he doesn’t get a second chance to be a content creator at this point. he doesn’t get to show himself to do better. he needs to fucking leave. and if he tries to publicly make himself the victim then he better know that he’s going to get public backlash.
if anything situation proves to me that he can never be trusted with a public platform ever again because he will immediately guilt people into feeling sorry for him.

Real talk everyone needs to learn: it is possible for someone to be both a victim and an abuser even simultaneously.
You can be victim of childhood sexual abuse and still grow up to be a horrible person who abuses your own family. The cycle of violence is real people.
White women are victims of misogyny but they can also be perpetrators of racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, anti-semitism, islamophobia, classicism, sexism and abusive towards their families. Think about all those white women who claim to be feminists and looking out for other women but then still turn around and call the police on a black woman they saw in their neighborhood or a disabled homeless woman who was loitering outside a building. The term Karen exists for a reason and it is not about a woman who gets mad because her waiter brought her a tea instead of a coffee. It is a white woman who specifically targets black people and calls the police on them. There is a reason why white women have been fighting against social media to change the definition of calling a white woman a Karen. Saying the term was sexist didn't work (because misogynist don't believe in sexism) so now they try to claim that being a Karen is a superpower meant to stand up for the marginalized and get results.
Women of color are victims of both racism and sexism yet can still be guilty of racism, colorism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, anti-semitism, islamophobia, classicism, sexism and abusive towards their families. Colorism is a really big problem amongst all the various poc groups. unfortunately WOC still hold up the same racist cast standards. Whether it's turning to skin lightening products, straightening one's own hair to fit with eurocentric standards, getting plastic surgery, or repeating the mantra lighter than a brown paper bag, a lot of WOC buy into the idea of what is the right way to look and what is not. Before any of you reactionist are quick to scream, " but if they don't conform to eurocentric standards they are not going to be treated like human beings!" Conforming to the status quo literally does not cause racist to stop being racist. Keep in mind that these women don't just view themselves in a negative light but everyone else who looks like them as well. What do you think women who use skin lightening products do to their children? Especially their darker skin daughters? What do you think happens when these women pray that their child will be fair skin but then are mad to see that they ended up with a brown or black child? Talk to any black, hair stylist, pediatrician, or dermatologist and they will tell you that many parents are so quick to hide their child's natural curly hair while they are still toddlers. that they want their child to have straight hair by age 3. What do you think that does to a child's mental state and self-esteem?
A white physically disabled person will face discrimination for being disabled but still perpetuate racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, anti-semitism, islamophobia, classicism, sexism and abusive towards their families. There are some physically disabled people who rely on social safety nets whether it be food stamps, disability, Social Security etc etc and yet they believe that these programs should be more strict on who is allowed to receive benefits. Even though they themselves have complained about having to prove to their case worker that they are still disabled. They honestly believe that other people in need are fakers who just do not want to work. Because many families cannot afford to have a private nurse come over to assist their disabled relative, oftentimes people will care for their disabled relative despite having no medical training or knowledge. Well this is not the case for everyone, sometimes the family member they are taking care of is abusive towards them. They don't want them to leave the house, have friends, significant others, or even just a little bit of time to do something for themselves. They do abuse their caretaker, throwing things at them, calling them names, tearing down their self-esteem, and threatening to tell their caseworker that their caretaker is abusing them if their caretaker does anything they don't like. Yes this does happen in the real world.
The neurodivergent community is extremely guilty of ableism, especially towards other neurodivergent people. People will complain about how they have every right to exist in public and stem however they want, but then turn around wish that other neurodivergent people disappear. They call other disabled people normal or neurotypical for doing something that they personally do not like. The action in question is something that literally other neurodivergent people do. Think about how many posts you've seen on Tumblr where an autistic person complains about being triggered ( often times they don't even use the term trigger correctly) because their "neurotypical" coworker keeps talking very loudly and fast. Do you know who else talks very loudly and fast sometimes? Other autistic people and people with ADHD. The neurodivergent community seriously needs to stop diagnosing everyone around them as normal. Oftentimes when people try to hold neurodivergent people accountable, the neurodivergent person in question will try to completely manipulate the situation and say things like "my brain doesn't work. I don't understand did I do something bad?", " I can't be held accountable because I'm mentally disabled", or " ableism! How dare you treat me like this!". I had a former coworker who had a form of down syndrome. She would wait until management was not around and then scream in the faces of our other co-workers (often fellow neurodivergent people themselves) and literally call them stupid. When management would ask her about her behavior, she would immediately begin to cry on the spot and say she didn't know she was doing something bad. When he would leave the room she would stop crying and bragged to me about how she knew what she did. Please note she was a disabled white woman calling other disabled mostly black women stupid. For other cases of neurodivergent people being horrible people just look at Chris Chan or Jupiter the hybrid. Apart from believing that they are the only disabled person in the room, racism is also extremely common amongst neurodivergent people. White autistics also love to call the police on disabled brown and black people. If an Asian or black person announces that they are autistic, they are often met with skepticism by white neurodivergent people. I really do not have time to get into it but look up the racist history between who gets diagnosed with ADHD and who gets diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). This very much plays a role in how neurodivergent people determine who is a "valid" neurodivergent person and who is not. Remember folks just because someone is neurodivergent that does not mean they are not upholding racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, anti-semitism, islamophobia, classicism, sexism and are abusive.
Trans people can face discrimination for being trans but then they themselves are also guilty of being transphobic. Just take a look at the trans men's rights activist movement (TMRA), the tramsmed community, and the huge rise of anti-feminist trans people. Please note I am not talking about trans people who are anti-terfs and serfs, but trans people who are anti-feminism in general. For some reason the TMRA movement also believes that every single trans woman is a terf? I refuse to go down that rabbit hole to see their "logic". Unfortunately for the trans community large chunks of the community still hold on to their same Conservative Christian values they were brought up with and it's very telling when you see people talk about who is a valid trans person and who is not. There are also trans people who are homophobic. They believe homosexuality is a sin. Take a look at trans influencers who make fun of gay people, especially those who do drag, and talk about how they find drag offensive despite the fact that the trans community has a long history with the drag community. Don't believe me? Take a look at trans influencer Nikki Secondino's anti drag comments on her platform before she was arrested for murdering her dad. As with the other groups the trans Community is still guilty of homophobia, ableism, anti-semitism, islamophobia, classicism, sexism and abusive towards their families.
Gay and lesbian people are victims of homophobia but also dish out the same bigotry. There is a huge problem of acephobia, biphobia, transphobia, and discrimination towards intersex people within the G & L community. Think about all the posts you've seen that come from gay people who say that they are gay but they're normal about it unlike the more stereotypical gay people out there. They are looking to conform to their conservative values. They want the approval of the society they were brought up in even though that Society does not like them. They want the benefits of being white, christian, middle-class, and they don't want queer people "messing it up for them". They want to prove to conservatives that they are still conservative just like them they just happened to be gay or lesbian is all. Not a surprise they are really horrible to their fellow gays, queers of color, and trans people. Some people like to joke about the man who has the public life with the wife and kids but then in private is a closet homosexual who goes to the hotel with a sex worker. The thing is though that is a reality that still goes on today. It's not uncommon for them to beat or even kill their lover. Think about all the gold star lesbians and gold star gay people out there and pay attention to the terminology they use. How proud they are to have never had sex with someone of the opposite gender or someone with X genitalia. Well some people may know and accept early on their sexuality that is not the case for everyone and that is not a bad thing. This type of ideology is extremely sexist, biphobic, transphobic, and homophobic. Clinging to these out of date views will not help the lgbtqia+ community in the long run. Another thing that the community does not like to acknowledge AT ALL is the domestic violence that happens amongst queer couples. Look up the tragic case of Lyndsey Vaux, a queer woman who was murdered by her lesbian girlfriend if you need proof that queer people can also be abusive domestic partners. Ask any asian, brown, or black member of the LGBT community their experiences and they will tell you they would rather hang out with cishet asian, brown, and black people than with a white group of the lgbt+ people. Because they are more likely to be accepted by straight members of their same race then they are to be accepted by the white queer community. I know I didn't touch on it but the gay and lesbian Community are also guilty of racism, ableism, sexism, classism and more than capable of abusing those they love.
Poor people tend to really hate other poor people especially in america. I loosely mentioned it above about how disabled people want social safety nets to be harder for other people to obtain despite the fact that they also need them. It's not just disabled people who are guilty of this though. I've met a lot of people who are on food stamps but at the same time think that food stamps should not exist because it "encourages the lazy bums to leech off the system". When you try to point out the fact that they are also receiving food stamps they try to justify it. They think of themselves as a good person who didn't intend to end up in this type of situation but clearly they are the only exception, everyone else just doesn't want to work. Look at the people who are anti-free lunch programs, anti-affirmative action, anti-affordable healthcare, and anti Universal basic income, anti homeless shelters, anti-free birth control, Pro Redline laws, Pro business, pro profits over people, the entire libertarian movement. Many of these people are in fact poor and working class themselves. They just cannot admit that. Hell even amongst homeless people there is judgment and discourse. Some homeless people really do believe they are better than other homeless people because " my situation is different from theirs". The YouTube channel invisible people is a heartbreaking Channel where the interviewer pays homeless people to interview them and share their stories. The guy who runs the channel used to be homeless himself. His goal is to humanize and try to help homeless people. Every once in awhile one of the people he interviews will be in complete denial about themselves and their situation. Bigotry is a problem with poor people just like every other group.
This post is not meant to divide the different marginalized groups but rather acknowledge the problems that already exist. If you consider yourself left leaning in the slightest but this post made you mad, it probably means you have some issues you need to work on. The reality is we live in a very bigoted society. It does not matter if you're a disabled, queer, non-binary, stunning creature, you still have to check yourself for any bias you learned growing up. White people in the lgbt+ community get mad when issues like racism are brought up and accuse queers of color of trying to divide the community. In reality it is the racism that divides the community not the acknowledgment of.
This is where I'm going to end this for now. I know there's a lot I didn't touch on but let's be honest this post is already too long. If any of my fellow marginalized people want to share their experiences about bigotry and discrimination within their own communities please do so.

If you're a self proclaimed "Christian" who won't call out racism, sexism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, antisemitism, Islamophobia, classism, ableism, xenophobia and any other form of bigotry and discrimination, you're not a very good Christian. If you endorse any of those forms of discrimination, I'd say you're not a Christian at all. Be a kind person and call out bigotry when you see it. It is unacceptable in truly Christian spaces.

You're kidding yourself if you think you're a real feminist. Men will never defend you the way you defend them.
okay, let's set aside the fact that you're blatantly wrong; that i have friends and loved ones who are men. that men are among the people who, out in the real world, have stood up against homophobia in general and stood up for me in specific. that i have heard genuinely thoughtful and well-intentioned contributions to the greater cause of feminism from real men in my life.
let's pretend you're right. so what? am i supposed to grow resentful of them, and their privilege? am i supposed to try and get one up on them by shit-talking and abusing them to anyone who'll listen? am i supposed to pursue political change that somehow disempowers men?
like, what do you want me to do? what does your worldview actually do? except for harming marginalized men, disenfranchised men, men who experience racism and homophobia? alienating potential allies? if we buy into your childish worldview and believe that all men are evil, that men are inherently a category of people that aren't worth any work understanding or helping, that don't have a place in feminist frameworks of political and socioeconomic theory, then what's the point? should we kill em all? what's your solution, aside from trying to shut people like me down for having nuanced discussion of sexism and the effects it has on people of all genders?
on top of the fact that you're dead wrong that men would 'never defend me,' i see what's up with your reductive bullshit. it's an excuse not to try. if all men are shitty, then there's no reason to try and reach out to them politically, socially, in solidarity or intersectionality.
see, i work with men all day. among them are some pretty cool dudes, and some assholes. people who i would consider my friends, and political allies, and those that i've had to report to HR. because this shit? it's complicated. there are good men and there are assholes, and if you want to pretend that because of a few assholes men as an entire category don't merit nuanced discussion in feminist circles, then you're either an idiot or you're scared. probably both.
you can sit on your ass sending anon hate all you want, but intersectional feminism is out here actually achieving community building and solidarity. i know which worldview i'm putting my efforts into. i will always call out sexism, will always be critical of systems that do perpetuate misogyny and double-standards, networks of behavior and cultural biases that prop men up above people of other genders, but if you think many men aren't going to be a vital part of that discussion, then there's no point to any of this. and that's fucking stupid.

I've seen some people I follow reblog posts about how transmisogyny is real cause discrimination against trans women is unique to them being trans women while transandrophobia isn't real cause none of the mistreatment they face is unique to being trans men but can be divided into different stuff: transphobia, sexism against afabs, misogyny, people being scared of men, racism etc
And while i do think transmisogyny is much more obvious and a bigger legal issue, I really don't get this argument cause, like couldn't all groups that are discriminated against have the reasons split up like that? It feels disingenuous to just handwave discrimination against trans men in that way.
I'm sure you've made posts about this in specific before, but i haven't been able to find them, and i really respect your perspectives and arguments. I'm personally agender, so reading about this kinda stuff is really important to me since i dont know most of it first-hand.
Hope you have a good day!
Well, that's why I say that logic is a complete misunderstanding of intersectionality theory.
Each and every individual is an assortment of identities and this assortment AS A WHOLE will influence the pressures of oppression and how they are demonstrated throughout this person's life.
Oppression is both systemic and individual and thus what may be true of the individual is not always true of the system and visa versa.
Almost every single instance of oppression is fueled by multiple factors and very few exist solely as a 100% unique experience. Antiblackness ties closely with antisemitism. Antisemitism ties closely with ableism. Ableism ties closely with homophobia. Homophobia ties closely with misogyny. Misogyny ties closely with transphobia. Transphobia ties closely with xenophobia. Xenophobia ties closely with racism. And now we have gone in a circle. In oppressive society, it is rare to find bigotry that does not double back on itself like this.
Let me be clear: transmisogyny is real. And also, trans men are oppressed. Both are true.

I'm going to say this in the nicest way possible, but this series and it's characters aren't perfect, as well as this fandom. As much as I like Lupin III, there is an astounding amount of legitimate racism, sexism, homophobia (because that's what the gay jokes are), transphobia, islamophobia, and other forms of bigotry within the franchise. Many of the women throughout the franchise were written by misogynists. Many of the gay jokes, including the ones involving your ship, were meant to be homophobic. Not only is there a lack of diversity of different races, but they're often drawn as racist caricatures. Crossdressing characters are almost always evil, and there's a literal crossdressing Nazi villain. All episodes set in the Middle East in Part 2 have been islamophobic. Native Americans are depicted as a joke and as racist caricatures. Sexual harassment is rampant. Some of your favorite episodes have bigoted elements or are inherently bigoted.
This content attracts real bigots. Whenever you see someone in real life or online gushing about the series, it may be because of this content. This isn't even an exaggeration, I've seen bigots in places other than Tumblr state that they love this show. Some of your Tumblr mutuals could be these bigots who love these elements of the show, or who outright don't believe there's a problem with any of this.
Some of you are inadvertently being bigoted. If you're admiring Jigen's misogyny as if it's all a big joke or a quirky character trait, or can only see Fujiko through the lens of the misogynist writers, you're being misogynistic. If you think there's not a problem with the racism and that these parts can "just be ignored," you're being racist. Geralt is not "cute," he's a Nazi. If you legitimately think that the Lupin III depictions of Islamic countries, from the bombings and violence and killings, are accurate, you're being islamophobic.
I'm not saying to drop the show, or that we're all bad people, but we need to start talking about these things. When you recommend an episode or movie, you need to mention if it's racist. When talking about this series, you need to bring up the misogyny and other elements. When talking about your favorite episode or character, you need to acknowledge if something bigoted was said and done within the episode or by the character. You need to make your stance clear on these subjects.
And one last thing, this blog is against bigotry. Please do not interact with my content if you agree with the bigotry throughout this series. For anyone else, please try to make a positive change. I have been at fault and recommended episodes and specials without mentioning these elements, and in the future I will remember to properly provide warnings for this content. Please do not let this community degrade into bigotry.

ok so I've been shipping sidlink for years now and been in the zelda fandom for longer(fandom since 12, shipping since 16) so I'm used to seeing bad faith takes trying to explain why a ship between two adults who aren't related is "problematic" but "if you don't ship z/elink your a misogynist" is definitely the newest and most disheartening.
out of all of my LITERAL YEARS of shipping these two I haven't once seen a post bashing zelda or another female character. Even with the interruption of Yona I haven't seen much hate, sure there has been somethings here and there but for the most part everything's been chill.
what I wish people would do is analyze racism and sexism on the Gerudo, discussing how although link is gender androgynous in botw it comes at the price of orientalism, and how Zeldas powers being connected to birth right calls into question how much sexual agency she has. not you know....trying to prove moral failings based on what you ship(sidenote, please don't read this line and think im p/ros/hip I got beef with yall but that's for another post)
what I have seem instead was toxic z/elink stans putting sidlink hate directly in the ship tags. I can't look up sidlink on here and especially twitter without seeing a post saying that if you ship them you're a pedo when I haven't seen this behavior for all my years I've been shipping. only in the last year that I've seen it. I personally think the problem is (that isn't unique to z/elink) is that fans feel the need to feel justified when hating a ship, it isn't enough to just not vibe with it, there has to be a valid reason. so instead of ignoring it they come up with reason why liking something that's completely fine is a problem. so they come up with a reason like pedo are most recently misogyny. I don't like z/elink but I would never try to make a moral reason as to why.
you can understand sexism in zelda, and fandoms as a whole without shipping the main girl character. infact I would argue its more sexist to imply you can only understand a female character only when they're with a man. so if your gonna callout non-z/elink shippers for misogyny can I also callout z/elink stans for internalized homophobia with their weird need to nitpick every mlm ship?

Take A Look At Us Now
Notes: I wanted to give writing Tommy a go and then I wound up trying to figure out how we got from the Tommy in Chim and Hen begins to the Tommy we meet now. With some Buck thrown in for fun, of course.
Summary: There is a magic to finally finding your true self and maybe Tommy has a deeper understanding of what that journey is like and can see it plainly as it is happening to Buck.
Ship: Buck/Tommy
Words: 2,913
On Ao3
-
Everyone would probably think that Tommy saw himself more in Eddie than in Evan. There was just so much about them that was similar, it was why they had hit it off right away. It was Evan that Tommy saw a lot of himself in, though, and he hadn’t known it, not until Evan called him asking for a tour of LAFD’s Air Operations.
Right away, from the moment that Chim arrived with the two firefighters, Tommy had been taken aback by how gorgeous they were. They barely had time to talk before he had smuggled them away into a chopper while they awaited Hen. The whole flight out had been tense and yet it was easy to tell how close they all were. It had left Tommy wishing he were a part of them too.
Asked after the fact why he’d done it, Tommy had just shrugged and smiled. Only once did he explain that it was the right thing to do and he trusted Chimney and Hen enough to know they wouldn’t put their whole careers and lives in danger unnecessarily.
Tommy had a lot of respect for Chim and Hen. With Chim, there was of course how he’d literally saved Tommy’s life, but Tommy had also seen how tough he had it. Tommy hadn’t helped there, at all, but he’d been different back then. He’d been just a couple of years out of the army, maybe a little troubled about it. In so many ways, Tommy hadn’t had any idea who he was and had been playing a part. Just one of the guys. It was easier. Safer. Going along with Captain Gerrard meant being a part of something bigger than himself and he didn’t want to compromise that by speaking up.
Chimney earned his respect and Tommy considered him a friend. They all took him in as one of their own. When it came to Hen, things got tense again. Gerrard’s sexism and misogyny and racism and homophobia coming through in a way that squeezed Tommy’s insides. He was too much of a coward to say anything at first, but even he could recognize how hard Hen worked. He also quickly realized how brave Hen was.
Not just being a female firefighter, or sticking it out despite being unlucky enough to have to work under Captain Gerrard. It was that she was herself. Wholly herself.
The way that he’d grown up, he’d known what happened to guys that showed any interest in other men. Had seen it first hand. The first time that his eyes lingered too long on a guy, Tommy felt nothing but panic. So, he’d doubled down on looking at women and talking about women. By the time he was in the army, it came second hand. It wasn’t like he was supposed to talk about it anyway, then.
Afterwards, when he was back to being a civilian, Tommy just continued on in the same manner. It was easy for him, he was a man’s man. Interested in cars, sports, martial arts, and flying. Nothing about him would ever scream gay, and so Tommy kept that hidden.
Tommy spoke a big game about the latest girl that he’d shown his chest scar to. He was continuously a bachelor, staying single and not mingling. No one would ever question him, they considered him a player and Tommy just went with it. High fived the other guys when they made questionable comments, joked and laughed with them and tried to tamp down the churning in his stomach.
Sometimes there was a joke made…or some reference aimed at Tommy and Tommy had to pretend he didn’t understand something or that he was in on the joke. It did get tiring. Hen made him rethink living his life like that, to hide such a huge part of himself.
He was too weak and cowardly to do anything loud and outward, but one night he decided enough was enough.
He drove to a part of town where no one was likely to know him, dressed a little differently. Not flamboyant or something that wasn’t him, but like he knew what he was doing and he knew he looked good. Then, he walked into a gay bar.
Tommy had done his research and he knew what he was walking into and even then he didn’t expect to immediately come upon two men kissing. Maybe it was his wide eyes, or his clear inexperience, but it didn’t take long for someone to look at him with some curiosity.
“First time coming here?”
“Uh. That obvious?”
The man talking to him had a head full of curls that tumbled artfully over his forehead. His shirt was tight across his chest and his pants seemed painted on.
“It is to me. There’s a tell. The awe. The nervous energy.”
He did feel nervous, like something was churning in his stomach wildly.
“Get a drink, it will ease your nerves. What’s your name?”
“Tommy.”
“I’m Neal.”
Tommy was used to being in his element. This wasn’t that at all.
“Hey, Jerry,” Neal called out.
The bartender came their way. He was broad shouldered, a black beard trimmed close on his chin and jaw. A white kitchen towel hung over one shoulder.
“Get my new friend a drink.”
“Rum and coke,” Tommy said.
It was delivered to him in minutes. Neal remained next to him and for a moment, Tommy did wonder what they looked like.
“Now, you don’t have to answer me, but what made you walk in here?”
All his life he’d been lying. As he glanced around he saw what was normal at any bar in LA. Young people mingling, flirting, smiling, and laughing, and making connections. Gender wasn’t a barrier.
“I’m…I guess I’m finally ready to accept who I really am.”
“And you are?” Neal asked.
“Gay,” Tommy said. “I’m gay.”
The words felt strange in his mouth. They also felt true. Tommy felt free.
Neal let out a loud cheer. “Now that’s out of the way. How about you bring that drink and I introduce you to a few people.”
That was the first night that Tommy realized he didn’t need to keep hiding. Not that it made it any easier in his regular life. Neal introduced him to a bunch of people that first night and Tommy felt like he belonged. He blushed so red the first time a guy actively flirted with him and then loved the feeling so much that he chased it.
He flirted with men. Danced with them. It was on his second visit to the bar that he finally kissed a guy. He was one of Neal’s friends, a little shorter than Tommy with a strong build. His lips were pillow soft and if Tommy hadn’t known before, the kiss confirmed everything.
After that, Tommy just…well, he needed to try everything. There was always someone that was interested. His first exchange of handjobs happened in the bathroom and it was so hot that it lasted minutes but replayed in his memory for days.
For a long while, that was all he could manage. Bodies pressed together, hands groping, kissing that was so dirty and messy that it was obscene. One night, he went home with a guy. He was someone Tommy had seen around at the bar, but never grown the courage to approach. Matthew approached him and by the end of the night, charmed him enough to leave the bar and drive to his apartment.
Matthew wasn’t pushy, he was actually sweet in how he took his time with Tommy. They drank beers in Matthew’s living room, edging closer together until they were kissing and touching and then their shirts were off followed quickly by their pants.
Tommy had done his research, and he was prepared, except that of course he wasn’t. Thinking about it and reading about it and even watching porn was in no way enough to prepare for the reality. Tommy had no regrets. He did wish that he hadn’t rushed in and gotten caught up in the excitement of finally being able to embrace such a huge part of himself.
All that time, he never told anyone in his day to day life. Keeping the personal and the professional separate just felt that much easier. Once Gerrard was gone, it almost felt like the right time to come out, but there was still Sal and some of the others. Neal told him it was okay to take his time. So, Tommy did.
Then, he just decided it wasn’t worth it to shake things up when things were going so well. He had his nights at gay bars and clubs and sometimes he took someone home — more often than not he let them take him to their homes. The 118 was going through Captains at such a speed that it was even more crucial than ever that everything else was steady.
By the time they were told they were getting some guy from Minnesota, they were used to no one making it longer than a year. Captain Bobby Nash was different.
For one thing, he was younger than the last six Captains, even if that meant he was completely in over his head…or at least, it seemed that way at first. Looking back, Tommy did have some regrets about leaving the 118. Seeing the way that they were now, it was what Tommy had thought the 118 was back in the day — but it wasn’t. He could have been a part of that. Of course, it would have required that he be a bit more open about himself and Tommy didn’t know if he would have been brave enough to do that.
Combined with his interest in getting back in the air, Tommy was ready for a new start. When a spot opened up with Air Operations, Tommy jumped on it and he was their first choice when considering all his experience as an Army pilot. Entering that new space, he did it without hiding. It wasn’t like he was shouting it for all to hear, but when it came up he just said it.
“I’m into men” or “I’m actually playing for the other team” or “not into women” or any variation including “I’m gay”.
Tommy did keep in touch with Hen and Chim. Not often, but enough to hear about how well Captain Nash was doing. Rare though it was, they even did occasionally overlap on calls. He, Chim, and Hen sometimes even met up for drinks. One night, Hen introduced him to a firefighter from the 115. Casey was gay and out and proud. Tommy was amazed by him.
He didn’t know if Hen had figured him out, or if she’d somehow heard. Tommy wasn’t mad. Casey was captivating and by the end of the night, if Hen hadn’t known, she probably did. Casey also wasn’t one of the guys that Tommy found at a bar or club. He was a relationship guy and it was something entirely new for Tommy.
Casey had been out since he was a teenager and he seemed to immediately peg how inexperienced Tommy was. He gave him perspective and showed Tommy what it was like when you actually cared about the person you were with. At one point, Tommy had been sure he was in love with Casey, until it all came crashing down, and he realized that he wasn’t as broken up about it as he should be.
There were guys after Casey. Nothing that ever lasted. Tommy didn’t mind casual, even found he preferred it considering his line of work. It didn’t mean that he didn’t want to settle down. It just meant he hadn’t found the right person.
He didn’t know Evan was into men right off the back. Suspected it, maybe, but only in the way that meant he was hoping because then he had just a speck more of a chance with him.
When he saw Evan for the first time after flying into a hurricane on Hen’s instincts and Chim’s insistence, Tommy was taken by him. Out of his firefighter uniform, he looked different. A little lost, maybe, but beautiful. His attraction to Evan was undeniable. Tommy didn’t know why Evan had bothered to ask for a tour, not when he knew right away that Evan wasn’t actually interested in transferring and leaving the 118. Still, there was something about the way he smiled at Tommy, hopeful when Tommy mentioned giving him flying lessons.
Evan’s cheeks even went a little pink as he offered to buy Tommy a drink. For a moment, just a moment, Tommy wondered if he meant it as more than just two friends. Shook that thought off because Tommy just wasn’t that lucky.
Tommy had been torn between wanting to take him on that offer and knowing that he’d made plans with Eddie that he couldn’t exactly cancel. He’d seen Evan’s face fall a bit and then he’d been left hopeful that Evan would call again and they could get that beer. That they could make more plans.
Evan didn’t call. Tommy was too busy answering Eddie’s phone calls, but he would have answered if Evan threw out that offer to share a drink. Instead, he was busy with Eddie. It wasn’t that Tommy didn’t have other friends. It was that all of his friends were married with kids or divorced with kids or too far away and too busy for Tommy to see without extensive planning. Eddie was available. He should have known that it wasn’t that easy.
It should have been Eddie’s girlfriend that got territorial, instead it was Evan. Tommy immediately felt bad.
Going to see Evan to clear the air had only felt right. And, yes, maybe he did want to see Evan again. If it meant that his eyes could wander over Evan’s strong arms and appreciate the blue depth of his eyes then it was just a plus. What was more, was Evan’s own admittance that he’d been jealous and acted rashly. His vulnerability and honesty just shone through. Evan was like a small bird with a broken wing and Tommy wanted nothing more than to fix up his wings and let him fly.
Evan then changed everything. The whole time, he’d been feeling bad for making Evan feel like he was taking away his best friend, when it was about Eddie getting to spend time with Tommy. His brain made leaps, picking up all the signs…all the very confused signs.
When Tommy kissed him, it felt like a spark igniting between them. For all that it was the simplest, softest of kisses, Tommy knew it felt right. Evan’s hesitance, the way that he looked when Tommy pulled back, and yet the fact that despite his shock he kissed Tommy back, it cleared up everything.
Tommy was elated. He wanted nothing more than to kiss Evan again, but it didn’t take much to know that this was the first time Evan had kissed a guy. Tommy knew what that was like, the delicate nature of it.
As Evan agreed to a date, cheeks pink and something like pleased surprise in his expression, Tommy let himself take in the moment and tried not to show how stunned he was at everything Evan brought out in him. He knew he had to be careful handling his little bird, and it was an honor to be the one to lead Evan to new discoveries. It meant not kissing him a second time and leaving before he couldn’t help himself any longer.
If he couldn’t stop smiling through his whole shift that night, no one needed to know his reason was a gorgeous blue eyed firefighter with a heart of gold.
Two nights later, when Evan admitted that it was his first date with a dude, Tommy didn’t pretend he wasn’t aware.
“We’ll do this at your pace, Evan.”
“It’s not…it’s not some—”
“What?”
“A deal breaker?”
“What, on dating you?” Tommy asked and he knew he couldn’t shake his smile.
“Uh…yeah,” Evan said, dropping his eyes to the table and looking far too adorable.
“It’s not,” Tommy said. “You wanted my attention, you got it, Evan.”
He blushed beautifully, his skin going rosy in increments. His blue eyes were shinning. Tommy remembered the wonder that came with finally knowing yourself, but even more so in embracing it and admitting it. Seeing it in Evan was glorious. When it changed into pure panic at the arrival of Eddie and a woman Tommy presumed was his girlfriend, Tommy did his best to smooth things over and act like nothing was wrong.
They were lucky the hostess hurried Eddie and Marisol along to their table, because Tommy wasn’t sure that Evan was going to be able to not blurt out something he wasn’t ready to say yet.
“Hey, you okay?”
“No. Yes. I don’t know.”
Tommy couldn’t help his smile. “This is the hard part. You don’t owe anyone anything about yourself. Your truths are yours and you can tell them whenever you are ready. Like I said, we do it at your pace.”
“So, if I wanted to keep this on the down low…”
“Then we do that,” Tommy said.
The smile that Evan gave him was wide. Content.
“I don’t want to hide,” Evan said. “Not when I’m finally who I’m meant to be.”

This isn't just a st fandom problem, it stretches across fandom as a whole.
But I think people focus on and constantly bring up Steve's 'sins'/ asshole behaviour while ignoring everyone else's because fandom seems to consider homophobia the 'worst' kind of bigotry. They can ignore racism, sexism, ableism, but they can't excuse homophobia. They only care about any other type of bigotry if they can use it to prove a point.
They bring up Steve being homophobic for using 'queer' against Jonathan in season 1 but they ignore
The kid's, particularly Dustin and Lucas, casual ableism in s1, when they kept referring to El as 'the psycho' and talking about her escaping from Pennhurst, calling it a 'nuthouse', constantly referring to her as the weirdo or the freak
Jonathan's ableism in s2 when he refers to the kids as Will's 'spazzy friends'
Billy's misogyny, referring to the girls of Hawkins High as cows.
Billy's racism. Everything about the way he treated Lucas. Just because the actor refused to say the N word, doesn't make the character not racist. There is more to racism than just using slurs.
Jonathan's casual misogyny, the way he talks to and treats Nancy at times, especially in s1 when they're talking about the photos. And the way he talks to and treats Joyce at times.
These are just some of the examples I can think of just from the top of my head. But they all get ignored or swept under the carpet, because 'not that big of a deal.'
All bigotry is bad. But Steve is the only character that has shown a hint of bigotry and then been shown to move past it. To make amends and show that he is now accepting of it. No matter how much people try to claim that Steve accepting Robin as a lesbian isn't proof of him no longer being homophobic. As if lesbians are somehow less gay than gay men.
i think because the majority of the fandom is gay, they just… don’t really give a fuck about other forms of bigotry.
they really think that homophobia is the worst that it gets. and that homophobia really only seems to apply to gay men, because the way they treat bisexuals and lesbians is…. jarring. to say the least.
obviously the show is set in the 80s, so it’s not like the bigotry is… totally unexpected or out of place. but i don’t think it’s treated or written right within the show, and i think that’s one of the factors that makes people so comfortable with ignoring it.
steve’s homophobia is unambiguously portrayed as the wrong thing. as steve’s lowest point. the actions he has to claw his way back from. but the bigotry within other aspects of the show is just… ignored. it’s just a joke. or not that serious. the characters aren’t punished or proved wrong. (i do kinda think that’s because a lot of bigotry was inadvertent, and more reflective of the duffers as people rather than because they were trying to accurately portray an 80s society. but whatever).
steve’s homophobia being treated as the biggest bad is also kinda weird to me because it doesn’t really have… a ‘real’ target, so to speak. like, the parties ableism is directed towards el, who, while she doesn’t have a canonical disability, is developmentally behind and raised in a lab. jonathan’s misogyny is directed at nancy and joyce, his ableism is directed towards the party, and therefore dustin. billy’s racism is directed towards lucas and his misogyny is spoken to max.
whereas steve (I AM NOT CONDONING HIS ACTIONS THEY ARE WRONG!!!) calls jonathan a queer. who is not a gay man. while it’s still obviously wrong and homophobic, the target of his homophobia is not a member of the community. and yet, people treat his comment as if it’s the worst form of bigotry on the show.
they’re willing to overlook everything else. they’re willing to perpetuate lesbophobia and biphobia, racism and misogyny. they’re willing to write thousands of outing fics where the outing isn’t portrayed as wrong. but steve saying the word queer? unforgivable.
(honestly, though steve’s homophobia is the only form of bigotry that we see treated as wrong and we see a demonstration of steve’s growth later in the seasons. i don’t know if we can even give the duffers that, because robin wasn’t originally going to be a lesbian. which means the duffers were never planning on dealing with any of the bigotry in the show in a meaningful matter. but that’s a different conversation)

Sjm was never getting a free pass from me, I knew acotar was bad from the get go, but I don't think I would have taken to making a blog centred around my grips if something like nezriel or any other Nesta ship, happened instead of Nessian
I say this as a point of shame btw. Like I'm not proud of it. It's scary how accepted and normalised she is, not just as a bad writer, but as a person with blatant racist, ableist, sexist and homophobic narratives
A lot of people are anti sjm because of a character assassination or a ship fumble
Sjm should be as shamed and shunned as other authors with bigoted undertones in their series but she isn't
She gets away with it
For me, unfortunately I think there was this resignation behind this because it's so hard to watch or read anything that doesn't have underlying racism especially
and when you're on the receiving end of it (as a bw especially, but also as poc in general) again and again and again you can get tired and worn down and try to distance your feelings from that so that you can enjoy things in general
But I think for that same reason, that being that so many people are anti sjm for more "petty" reasons, racism, ableism, misogyny and homophobia exist within this sector of the fandom too.
People fall under the anti banner because they prefer certain ships or character narratives and are often allowed to just use the actual problems in this series as additional or supplementary material for their arguments where they would basically let the racism, sexism, ableism and homophobia slide if canon went their way
Edit: all this to say, I've recently been more aware of racism, misogyny, ableism within anti sjm discourse and it's so disappointing but it's not surprising in the least because of the nature of this fandom
Anyways, idk, just a bit of introspection in regards to anti sjm

Most online left x right debate are so devoid of nuances, to the point of being boring. Unfortunately, messing up the reality of what both ideologies support is very dangerous, it has real life consequences.
Speaking specially about women who think we have to allying with conservatives “to protect women, girls and children”, I have news for you: right-wingers don't give a single damn about women, girls and children. Some will try to counter this statement with “b-but the left...” and let me say this: as a socialist black radical feminist, I have felt lost many times in left spaces due to the blatantly misogyny/homophobia and also the tokenization of racism that is often assumed as “racism is taken more seriously than misogyny/homophobia” which isn't true in slightest but I have never thought that the right was the solution. Not because right = essentially bad and left = essentially good, if it was true, the blatantly misogyny, homophobia and racism in leftist spaces wouldn't hit so hard as it does, however they have an essential difference: right-wingers want to perpetuate a world full of inequality across class, race, sex, sexuality, nation, etc because they benefit from this social structure. The leftist goal, however is dismantling all the exploitation and oppression.
They're radically different, even though in the practice we see people advocating against things that oppress them, while wanting to keep things that benefit them. This is why I get upset with how brocialists talk passionately about how cruel is to take advantage of the lack of choice of economic vulnerable people but supporting the whole sex trade with the stupidest neoliberal rhetoric, it's because their class analysis is filled with male supremacist lengths and we should defy that, not supporting people who are already powerful and are not only using you feeling lost and hopeless in a fake agreement in positions that aren't even the same. The case is: it isn't socialism that is incompatible with feminism, it's sexism/homophobia/racism that is incompatible with socialism.
The root of conservative opposition to queer, trans and non-binary is purely homophobia and misogyny. Homosexuality is a threat to the male supremacist capitalism, since this system exist to control women's presumed reproductive capacity in order to get more workers who will keep the current system alive to the next generation of the oppressors.
They see trans people and queers as freakers and this treatment is reserved to feminists(even the male-centric ones), lesbians, gay men and bi people too. Why do y'all think conservative men react to our complaining about the misogyny of TRAs with a total mockery “We told you it would happen. It's all because you feminists wanted to destroy the natural order”. The “natural order” means the misogyny and homophobia feminists have been standing against since day one because it's the reason why we oppose to queer theory in the first place. Not because of hatred, not because we're “exclusionary” but because queer theory and practice are antifeminist, since they ignore/dismiss and in some aspects even support the existence of female oppression and fighting it is the solely reason why feminism exist.
And in all this mess, what is often forgotten is how queer theory and the classic right-wing sexism have a lot of more in common than radical feminism will ever be. Radical feminism can also crashes with queer theory in some points (surprise girlies!!!) and it still doesn't mean we all are the same.
i hope you'll make a blog and write some essays like this :)
