It's always nice when you write a thing and someone goes "Wow, I really needed this! Thanks!"

Like I don't think people realize how rare the "this was great!" comments are compared to the "you're everything wrong with the world for having said something I didn't like" comments are. Especially now that some people consider me a "big name author", the number of positive comments I get is about the same as when I used to self pub, but the mean ones are a lot more frequent a lot meaner. Even just a "this made me happy :)" comment can really lift my spirits when I get them!

A very good question, nay, an important question, and one we are very glad to answer.

There are a couple of parts here. First, it is correct that we can’t talk about everything before we start experimenting with it and launching it. These big projects take months to build, and we’re a small team for the size of the ship we are running and what we build and maintain each day. We do try to tease things in the Upcoming section of the @changes blog when we feel comfortable doing so.

It’s also fair to say that we always post something about our bigger things that come out via @staff, like this and this and this, for example. Those are big projects, and all took time, effort, and resources to build. There are also twice-weekly posts on @changes about the other medium-sized and smaller things that we’re building and fixing. Even that is a small slice of how the platform shifts every day! There’s a lot happening every day across Tumblr in terms of us fixing bugs and pushing code. Tumblr is bigger than you think! 

Finally, as for WIP itself, it’s equally fair to say that we receive a lot of feedback and suggestions of ideas that we love the sound of—or indeed ideas that we have had ourselves!—but are unable to start working on because of other projects. Like the rest of our platform, we at WIP do everything we can to answer as many, and as wider range, of your questions each week. This, too, takes a lot of time and work, but don’t get us wrong—it’s work we love to do and work that’s good for the wider health of our platform.

Once upon a time there was a child.

All good stories start with once upon a time, stated or not. So do most bad ones. There is always a beginning to every story, even the greatest story ever told: that began in a lowly stable, where nobody was looking at all.

But this story starts, not with a squalling infant, but a child. It was a girl-child, rather small for her age, but with a heart as great as any twice her size: at least, that was what those around her thought.

When she looked at her heart, all she saw were the mistakes and imperfections. If she had looked a little way into her past she might have seen a time when she did not see the imperfections, and she might have only seen the love that was pent-up within her, but now she looked at her heart and saw the little errors. Everyone (except in the greatest story ever told) has such errors, but the girl-child only saw beauty and strength in the hearts around her, and saw truly only for herself.

People made comments, well-meaning and trying to guide her to smooth out the imperfections as she grew older and at last taller. But the child hugged the words to her heart, and they made very tiny cuts.

Time passed, and presently the child was a girl, and now she needed no words from others to cut at her heart, for she did it to herself, never seeing what others said was in her, a great and full heart.

Cut after cut after cut came to her heart, and slowly scar tissue began to form. And the girl-child looked at the scar tissue and branded herself a failure, and her words cut deeper.

Presently the child grew into a woman, with a greater and more steadfast heart than before. But she saw it not, for all she saw was that which she had made: a monster of scarring, a mockery of the true heart that still beat within her breast. And she whispered those words she had whispered for years, and still had the audacity to be surprised when they cut so deep.

But this is no longer her story, for once upon a time there was a book.

That book contained the greatest story ever told, and many other stories that all built up to and enhanced that story; and all those together told of that which wove the foundations of the earth.

But though that book was finished, the story that book told continued through the ages, and even the girl-child, with all her petty pain and suffering, was part of that greater story: and she was as nothing within it, but the Author of that story looked upon her and saw her distress.

And he gave the girl-child, now a woman, friends to gather around her and hold her together, and in response she tried to help them and make them happier and closer to him, but sometimes all she could see were the scars on her heart. Her friends, true wise souls that they were, spoke often to the Author about her, even at times when she was overwhelmed by her own inadequacies. They tried to show her the heart she had; and sometimes she tried to see it and sometimes she hugged the falsehood close, because the idea of having been wrong was unbearable.

You might ask where this story ends, and what happened to the woman. I am that woman: and the ending to my story is in the Author's own book, and it will be revealed to me piece by piece, and I must trust and keep on walking forwards, though sometimes the night seems very dark.

Legit the ending of the movie melted my heart like. The way megumin cries, when Kazuma saves her explosion magic is just like the best scene in all of anime.

ok my only starfield complaint apart from the unoptimisation in some areas is the lack of visual feedback when you're looting stuff?? even just a tiny icon to indicate what type of item you're taking would be so useful 😭

#i do like that there's no menu for looting like skyrim and games that came before bc that was a neat thing in fo4?? #but like. i just killed this guy and idk if this item he's carrying is a weapon or misc stuff!! #modern game uis are either hit or miss and it works really well in starfield bc of the context BUT visual feedback is a very important thin #in user experience and its tricky to find a way to implement it sometimes but here!! it'd be so easy to just. add a little icon #and also im terrible at remembering weapon names nd visuals are easier for me to remember weapons but thats a personal issue

Omg it might irritate you at this point but I just can't help it. I just read slow and steady after a year. I first read it back in 2022. And now, I can't help but feel the same I felt back then. It hurts like a bitch. On top of that, I am on my periods and my hormones are everywhere jumbled. Dia, I am begging you, please, not to pressure you, but just please I need a second part of it. I am so fucking sad and mad. Why a ff is fucking with my brain so much. Damn it!

I had to postpone it because the original fic collab that was meant to make it happen has been either put on hold or cancelled and I wasn't sure if anyone is still interested in it so I decided to focus on my other WIPs first. Also, as much as I support tumblr making a move toward monetization (I'm glad it's survived for so long, all things considered) I really hope your team is looking into figures like Yael Eisenstat who have spoken out about the business model of companies like Meta. Please operate differently. This is the only social media I use because it's been able to escape the trend of toxicity, emotional manipulation and extremism. It's not only due to the community on Tumblr, but the way the site has been designed for all these years. I hope Tumblr grows in a way that leads the way for humane social networking sites going forward and doesn't follow in the footsteps of the sites that are literally fuelling the deterioration of civil society. If there's a better email or person I can share these sentiments with, don't hesitate to let me know.
