Twilight’s necklace went flying right for the cliff, and Wind threw himself forwards, just barely managing to snag the cord before it was lost forever in the ocean below.

He let out a relieved phew as he got to his feet and placed the stone in his palm, but the moment the pendant touched his skin, a wave of intense pain shot through him, and Wind shouted in shock as he fell back to the ground, black flecking in his vision.

Twilight shouted and something in Wind’s very being seemed to abruptly twist, magic flowing, bones shifting inside out upside down as another cry was ripped from his throat that didn’t sound right and the world suddenly felt like it was falling away—

Since we're on the topic of Pikmin, how do you think Leaflings work? How do their bodies function and why does the Onion turn them into Leaflings instead of digesting them into raw material?

Woof, things have been pretty wild, but I think I'm confident enough to answer this one now. It's a bit hard to tell what causes a Leafling to occur, as it's never stated, but it seems to share an ailment similar to the Bulbmin's - it's the host of a Pikmin parasite. Every Pikmin species exhibits varying degrees of this behavior - and of course, different circumstances seem to have different results. In the Leafling's case, it seems that the fungal neural networks I speculated about in my previous post impact them as well - leading them to start thinking about Dandori. Pikmin need efficiency to survive, and it seems to make them happy. Oh hey, I've identified a reward system! We only see that behavior more clearly in Leaflings because they can speak a language we understand, and have more recognizable emotions.

Like Bulbmin, it seems like that a Pikmin sprout has been lodged in their head - and somehow hijacked their brain. But unfortunately for the Leaflings, it is significantly more severe, with leaves (Or is it hair? In most cases, it seems to match the character's hair color…) all over their body to the point where they are borderline unrecognizable. This is likely because the Onion did try to use the corpse for fodder. Corpses are likely turned into Pikmin by injecting their seeds into them, but why it doesn't fully transform our mini humanoid friends is beyond me. I'm not sure why Leaflings pass out after a while - always after being beaten in Dandori, whether or not they were actually participating. Maybe it's a cognitive response? Some individuals immediately are knocked out, while others like Olimar take longer, or don't pass out at all, in the case of the Sage Leaf. Maybe they're just more committed to the whole Dandori thing. Also, I think the healing effects may be caused by the fungal host, possibly similar to how it acts in an actual Pikmin's body.

Then there's Glow Sap, which is used as a cure for this leafy state. I suppose it makes sense, due to the rapid degeneration it causes in Mamuta larvae, but for some reason it doesn't harm our mini humanoid friends, similar to what I pointed out earlier. Could the answer to both of these conundrums be the fact these tiny humanoids have little oxygen tolerance? Then again, Glow Sap increases their oxygen tolerance, so now I'm back to square one trying to figure out this mystery substance. Oh well. That's what I got.
