I saw the same jelly-like green smoke appear as I leaned back with a sigh. The world shifted and changed until it was unrecognizable as if I were in a dream, and my mind ceased trying to make any sense of it.

Llegó a ser uno de los actores de Hollywood más populares durante décadas, no solo por su atractivo físico, sino tambi��n por su elegancia, su encanto y su agudeza. De él se decía que actuaba bien hasta de espaldas. Trabajó con muchas grandes divas del cine de Hollywood de su época: Marlene Dietrich, Mae West, Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth, Katharine Hepburn, Sophia Loren, Joan Fontaine, Ingrid Bergman, Ginger Rogers, Doris Day, Deborah Kerr y Audrey Hepburn entre otras. El personaje de James Bond se inspira parcialmente en él. Según la lista del American Film Institute, está considerado la segunda estrella masculina más importante de los primeros cien años del cine estadounidense. Su verdadero nombre era Archibald Alexander Leach y nació en Bristol (Inglaterra). Grant tuvo una infancia infeliz y un tanto confusa. Nenîth,

We’re back out in the wilds of Nosirion-1, so I don’t expect this’ll reach you until we’ve returned to town and reconnected to the signal there, but I’ve found a moment to write while I catch my breath, and I figured I’d better snatch it with both hands while I still had the chance.

We made it down planetside without incident this time, much to my relief. I trust Mink, and in her ability to find and hire crew, and the caution with which I’m sure she’d have done so after our previous experiences. But nevertheless, I can’t say I slept easily while we were on the Seles Emsel. Part of me kept expecting to wake up in an airlock again, listening to a countdown, scrambling for our lives.

But it was entirely uneventful, and when we disembarked Drime was there waiting for us, and when Elyn suggested we find a neutral sort of ground in which to introduce the children to Loraine, he offered up a private room to us, for the occasion. I’d thought perhaps to take her to the temple of Mishakal, to meet Gwynne and to have a place to meet where they might both be on even footing, but Pika and Elyn both liked the idea of the private room, so I deferred to their judgment.

Poor Loren seemed so worried, while we waited for Loraine to arrive, I couldn’t help but hug her up tight, and Squirt stayed pressed to her side the whole time, like he could bolster up her courage with his own strength. I had such a lovely conversation with Loren, while Pika and Elyn were off asking Alorvin to send word to Loraine to come and meet the children. She noticed my lucky ring, and said that she’d made it, and that she’d always liked that one, because of the color, and when I told her that it had already been of great use to us on our journeys she seemed so glad of it that it hurt my heart. And then she seemed so awed when I told her about the elk we’d met, and I’d conversed with, and she’d been all agape when we’d first disembarked and she’d seen the tree-buildings that made up the town, I have to think that she’s never seen anything but that damned workroom, and I found myself wishing all over again that I’d had the opportunity to wring the necks of the Yeruses. But my anger would have done nothing to calm or reassure her, and so I swallowed it down and told her instead that I’d also quite liked the color of it, and that I’d chosen it because it reminded me of the skies in the Feywild, and she asked me all sorts of questions about what it’s like, but I don’t think I did our home justice in the telling of it. She seemed duly impressed, though, and was thoroughly delighted when I had Squirt show her how he could blink from one place to another.

Devon’s a quieter sort than Loren is, and more cautious, even after the days on the Seles Emsel that we’ve all had to get comfortable with one another. But he’s taken a shine to Elyn, and I think he surprised all three of us when he pulled out of his bag one of the things he’d packed up from the Yeruses’ workroom, when he’d decided to leave with us, and offered it to us as an expression of his gratitude for what we’d done for them. All three of us, almost as one, I think, made the most pained protests that it wasn’t necessary, and we certainly didn’t need repayment for doing the right thing by them. But he insisted that he had no need of it, and it would please him for us to have it, and so Pika accepted it for the group, and he told us that it was a driftglobe — the very first he’d made, and he seemed self-deprecating about the fact that the daylight spell contained within didn’t refresh itself as quickly as it ought, with no understanding of the wondrous thing he’d managed to make, all by himself and at his first try, and at such a young age. I swear, every time either of these children open their mouths, they make me want to hurt the Yeruses worse and worse, for the things they’ve done to them, and the things they haven’t, and the horrible things they’ve let these children believe.

The introduction to Loraine was a tense and awkward affair, but an emotional one, as well. These poor children want so badly for someone to love them — even Devon, who tries to cover up for it by holding everyone at bay and keeping his trust a precious and guarded thing. And Loraine wants so very badly to love them, while remaining aware of the fact that she’s a stranger to them, and while their relationship can be built, over time, it can’t be forced. When Devon told her that they’d do what they could to make themselves useful and to not be a burden to her, I think all three of us made noises like wounded animals, and would have protested. But Loraine said exactly the right thing, that they were children and it wasn’t their responsibility to try to be useful, or to worry about being a burden, that it was her responsibility to care for them and it was one she took on gladly.

We left them to finish getting acquainted in private, once it seemed everyone was growing more comfortable with each other, and Devon had said that Loraine ought to take Loren to see a healer, because she had asthma that the Yeruses had treated on an emergency basis, but had never even bothered to treat fully. I hope Cernunnos turns his back on them both, and their shop sees no custom and their business withers and rots, and all the enchantments on their trinkets break, and they never again see even a single copper piece come into their coffers. I hope they die destitute and as broken-spirited as their children nearly were, and with the rumors (can they even be called rumors, when they’re the truth?) that Elyn began to spread through Mir, I hope not even their most generous and charitably-inclined neighbors will take pity on them. I hope they reap exactly what they’ve tried to sow into the hearts of these children, and I hope it’s bitter as poison.

I don’t think either of you will be surprised when I tell you that we all decided, after leaving the children in Loraine’s care, that we were rather in need of a drink. Well, Elyn and I were, anyway, and Pika joined us and ordered water for herself, and Elyn started talking about foster parents, and it seems she’s had several of her own. She said they kept sending her to new ones because she kept sneaking off to the city archive to search for information about her family’s ship, which honestly, it seems to me if that’s the worst sort of teenage rebellion they had to contend with from her, then they were getting off easy. She and Pika had a little chat in what I can only assume was Gnomish, too, and then Elyn apologized to me for it, to my confusion. She said it’s considered polite to speak in a language everyone present can understand, but I pointed out that I talk to Squirt in Sylvan all the time, and to the beasts we encounter, and neither of them can understand that, and none of them have told me it’s rude to do so, and she seemed taken aback by the implication, but at least stopped trying to apologize to me.

I had a conversation with Pika, too, while we were there, though I’m not sure I could say how it actually went. I asked her if she would be interested in teaching me the spell she’d used on us back at the Yeruses’ house, that helped us hide in the shadows a little better, because it seems like the sort of thing I might have an aptitude for, and she did such a good job teaching me how to speak to animals, and I’d noticed that when she cast it it seemed to take up a kind of energy from her, and I only wanted to offer the opportunity to move that burden onto my shoulders and free up that energy for better uses, and not to take it from her if it was a weight she was unwilling to give up, but I don’t know how well I made myself clear on that point, and when I tried to clarify she just shushed me, and left me just as uncertain as ever about whether she dislikes me or not. She agreed to teach me, though, and would someone agree to do that for someone they didn’t like? But I swear, she’s positively chatty with the children, and for the rest of us, it’s like trying to pry open mussel shells to get her to speak two words.

In the morning, we checked in on Loraine and the kids before setting out, and they seemed surprised to see us, but glad of it. I don’t know why they’d be surprised, though, after everything we went through to get to them and get them out of that terrible situation, of course we’d want to make sure everyone was settling in well and happy. We all got hugs, both coming and going (Loren hugged Squirt before she did me, which I can’t blame her for in the least, and mostly found quite amusing! It’s good to know the order in which we stand in her affections), and made sure the children knew how to contact us, and that they were welcome to, and then we followed Eheba, a scientist from the compound, to the boat they’d readied for us, and he offered to drive it for us, since it turned out none of the three of us knew how to do so.

It was good he did, after all, for as we got nearer to the inlet with the strange tides, the boat’s motor began to strain in a way that even I could tell wasn’t good, as though we were fighting against an outgoing tide, even though the tide wasn’t receding. Elyn leapt to work, taking a look at the engine and quickly figuring out a way to give it a bit more power, and I stood at the front and helped us find a path through the eddies and currents that might be less taxing on the motor, and when we made it close to shore Pika leapt from the boat into the sand and helped to drag the boat up out of the water onto the beach, and we all set off to try to find the source of this strange magical effect.

Pika found a stream that led up to a cove where waterfalls spilled down off of the rocks, and Elyn hummed a note that reverberated off of all the stone around us until it sounded like there were a dozen of her humming in unison, and was somehow able to tell from that that there was an opening hidden behind one of the cascades. We all went through together into a dark cavern, and Pika clapped me on the back and cast a spell on me that made be able to see in the dark the way she and Elyn can, which was clever thinking, because we’d scarcely started walking when all at once I saw a great wave of water coursing down toward us. I leapt up onto the rocks, out of the way, and trusting Squirt to blink to safety as well, so we wouldn’t be swept back out of the cave tunnel and away. But the water turned out to be only an illusion, and I came out of it blinking on the other side to find my companions doing much the same.

Whoever or whatever is in the cave, and causing the tides and waters to behave so strangely, they must very much not want company, for that was only the first of the magical barriers we encountered. Beyond that, we came to a room with a bottle sitting upon the floor, and a small stream of water trickling down one of the walls, and a strange noise resounding throughout all the room.

We were all, I think, concerned that the bottle might be some sort of magical trap, or at least magic, though Pika and Elyn looked it over and seemed to conclude that it wasn’t. And when we investigated the source of the noise, we discovered that it was caused by wind blowing over an opening in the rocks. It’s a good thing Elyn was with us, for she caught onto what was happening almost at once, and hummed a note to harmonize with the one the wind was making, and then scrambled about with the bottle and the water coming down the wall, filling it until she could make the same note by blowing across the mouth of the bottle, the way the wind blew across the opening in the cave, and in doing so dispelled an illusion that had disguised another corridor, and we continued on.

We next came upon an area with a round depression in the ground, and four columns around the outside and two in the center, and three of the ones around the outside were lit, all different colors. Pika had an idea about it right away, and dug a torch out of her pack to light it in the red light, and carried it in an arc around the nearest one in the middle, to the one beside it, to light that one. It lit, and the torch trailed light behind it following Pika’s path. I decided to follow her lead and echo her, using the blue light opposite her red, and curving around the opposite way. And while we were busy about that, Elyn was studying the other lit torch and noticed wave symbols upon it. We weren’t certain what the significance of that was, but we still had the last column to light, directly across the circle from her light, and I said that if she wove her way around the paths of light that Pika and I had left behind us, to the other side, it would look a bit wave-like. And I don’t know what would have happened if she’d crossed the path her torch left with the paths Pika or I had left, but I didn’t suspect it would do anything good. Elyn did so, and with all six columns lit another illusion fell, and revealed to us the path to continue on.

Further on, we found a third obstacle, this one a broad moat of water with some shape on the other side that we couldn’t make out in the dim light of the cave. I suggested we use Devon’s driftglobe to see better by, and with the daylight spell pouring forth from it and brightening the whole area, we could see on the other side a sizeable rounded stone with a glass bowl on top, but no way across to better inspect it.

We pondered it for a few minutes, understandably leery, I think, of simply wading across, lest it turn out to be poison or acid or some other horrible trap.
