Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake 24 of 2022 4.5 stars . Titus Groan is a great, meandering beast of a novel which explores the fantastical, if esoteric. routines and rituals of Gormenghast Castle and the occupants who are bound to these. It’s a slow novel, filled with beautiful detail and odd moments, but forget all that and pay attention to the names. Sepulchrave, Flay, Swelter, Nannie Slagg, Steerpike, Rottcodd, Sourdust, Dr. Prunesquallor and so many more. Honestly, the novel has some of the best names in Fantasy. Forget Daenerys, Galadriel and Severus, wrap your lips around Lord Sepulchrave. To call them inspired is an insult, in fact to describe them as anything at all is an insult because, to quote Steerpike, “We are all imprisoned by the dictionary. We choose out of that vast, paper-walled prison our convicts, the little black printed words, when in truth we need fresh sounds to utter, new enfranchised noises which would produce a new effect” I won’t say it’s a novel for everyone. There’s something drab and dolorous about it, and the plot is thin, but it’s the depth of the location and the characters that tell you more than any plot could. . #titusgroan #mervynpeake #gormenghast #gormenghasttrilogy #minimonotonebookclub #booksivereadin2022 #booksivedrawnin2022 #booksreillustrated #bookstagram #houlart #houl https://www.instagram.com/p/CmgZakMB3M_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Mini Monotone Book Club No.10: Ut i Sveriges Flora : Våra vanligaste vilda växter i färg. I love this book. My Mum bought it for me the last time we visited Arjeplog in the north of Sweden and I’ve based so many of my illustrations off the contents of its pages. The book reminds me of driving to Båtsjaur to visit Kjell and Tyra, drinking ridiculously strong black coffee, and looking out over frozen lakes as deer came up to the window. Memories and a muse, all in one book. #MiniMonotoneBookClub

It’s June, which means it’s time for @alexiswinter‘s Mini Monotone Book Club. My entry for this month is Pretty Monsters by kelly Link. Kelly Link is one of my favorites, a writer of the absurd who stretches language and situations to make you realize that you’ve been looking at everything wrong as she plays with perspective until it tips on its head. This collection of short stories features summer camp creatures, absent wizards, a phone booth, aliens, creepy twins, time warping bags, grave digging, and plenty of eerie magic--all the best things. Also highly recommend another of her collections, Stranger Things Happen.

'Discourse is not the majestically unfolding manifestation of a thinking, knowing, speaking subject, but, on the contrary, a totality, in which the dispersion of the subject and his discontinuity with himself may be determined. ' First September is celebrated as Knowledge Day in Russia, and coincidentally I have been re-reading Foucault's greatest work. Literary and Language theory are not my favourite thing to read! I have a long way to cover before I understand this book. Maybe I will understand by the time I am on my tenth re-read. It's a fascinating book, which examines narrative of cultures and histories and how they are bound by unconscious set of patterns and rules beyond grammar and syntax. And to understand their relativity with institutions, one has to dig up layers of communication and discourses. Some one please explain me this book! @alexiswinter my September's #minimonotonebookclub cover is inspired from your portraits and plants :) #thearchaeologyofknowledge by #michelfoucault #onlinebookclub #instabooks #iread #bookblog #bookcoverart #bookish #bookreview #booklover #bookstagram #bookchallenge #bookclub #coverart #bibliophile #reader #reading #doodle #doodling #doodleaday #doodles #doodleart #doodleenthusiast #readinggoals #frenchliterature #literature #bookcover #nonfiction (at Golf Green)

This was my first entry for #MiniMonotoneBookClub by @alexiswinter on Instagram. if you’re as interested as I am, go to www.alexiswinter.com/MMBC for details. If you don’t have an Instagram account, you can still do this, tho. Because doodling a mini version of your favorite book’s cover once a month won’t hurt. Beautiful Darkness is a graphic novel by Fabien Vehlmann and Kerascoet. Despite the warm color tone and fairy-tale-ish illustrations, this book is wicked. That’s what makes this book attractive (at least for me. It had several bad reviews on the internet). The story is super dark–yet beautiful. The plot doesn’t really explain. The only good feeling I got while reading this is when the main character got her revenge. But I still love it! I recommend this for those who’re somehow sick of romance-related-novels, or really pissed at someone yet can do nothing about it.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy #5 of 2023 5 stars . A reread of this in preparation to teach it again, and it’s still one of the most poignant and moving stories I’ve read. A father and son trudge the wasteland of a destroyed world, heading south. For those who like: Slow, meandering stories; Crying like a child at the uncaring nature of the world; The constant presence of death; Gutted babies on spits; Cannibalism. . Please also enjoy my heavily scrawled and tabbed copy . #theroad #cormacmccarthy #minimonotonebookclub #booksivereadin2023 #booksivedrawnim2023 #booksreillustrated #bookstagram #houlart #houl https://www.instagram.com/p/CpCUhV-BwIk/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

River of Teeth by Sarah Gailey #15 of 2022 3 stars . What starts as a promising and original concept, an alternate history Western where a real life proposal to introduce Hippopotamus into the Louisiana Bayou, quickly devolves into a cliched parody filled with one dimensional characters, ham-fisted efforts at inclusion that render it more spectacle than genuine and inane dialogue that borders on the laughable. However, the story is short and to the point, and entertained me sufficiently for a few hours. . #riverofteeth #sarahgailey #minimonotonebookclub #booksivereadin2022 #booksivedrawnin2022 #booksreillustrated #bookstagram #houlart #houl https://www.instagram.com/p/CglqwRtBQTk/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Those Across The River by Christopher Buehlman Book 2 of 2023 3.5 stars . Ominous and uncomfortable. A well-written horror story set in the post WWI American South tainted by just a little bit too many sex scenes and old-timey racism for my taste Recommended for those who enjoy: The Lottery by Shirley Jackson; Fresh takes on old horror tropes; Stories that could have been avoided by listening to clear and direct advice; Stories about men coping with PTSD; Stories about men who have lots of sex with their young wife, like lots and lots, and she’s so young, and they have sex. . #thoseacrosstheriver #christopherbuehlman #minimonotonebookclub #booksivereadin2023 #booksivedrawnim2023 #booksreillustrated #bookstagram #houlart #houl https://www.instagram.com/p/CoCIWBJBTXT/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
