Todos nós temos livre acesso à consciência, mas poucas coisas sobre nós mesmos são tão notáveis, fundamentais e aparentemente misteriosas quanto ela. A consciência é o que nos permite saber que existimos e entender quem somos, mas é algo tão comum que muitas vezes não damos valor a isso.

Mas e se a consciência nunca tivesse sido criada? Não teríamos memória ou pensamento, nem criatividade, música, pintura, literatura, amor, amizade, dor ou sofrimento. Não haveria conhecimento e ninguém para notar, nenhuma história do que as criaturas construíram ao longo do tempo, nenhuma cultura.

Agora imagine que a consciência é algo mais do que simplesmente estar acordado e consciente. Imagine que pode ser controlado e manipulado por forças maliciosas.
