If you were to look at the languages of Asia and Europe, you would see that many languages' word for tea is something like chai (Mandarin/Korean/Portuguese cha, Persian/Russian/Turkish chay, etc). It is repetitive to say "chai tea", even if chai does refer to a specific kind of tea. There is enough of a consistent difference between French tea and American or British tea to denote when tea is French, but nobody thinks thé tea is a legitimate phrase, and nobody would naturally think to use the phrase. There are people that see the French word thé's immediate linguistic proximity to the English word tea and recognize the redundancy there, but Francophones are also generally believed when they acknowledge a poor use of their language. Just because chai's linguistic proximity to the English word tea is less apparent to those who don't consider the presence of exchange between European and Asian languages doesn't mean chai tea isn't not repetitive and dismissive to Indians criticisms on Americans' use of the word chai

your bio says you’re southeast asian so I’m not going to tell you you can’t be critical of foreigners’ use of a word from your region. But also anything I could say to defend my (really harmless I think??) take on chai as a loan word is overshadowed by the fact that it’s now been two days of people reacting to that post and I’m tired. Many words enter other languages for various reasons and the way that other language folds them into itself is shaped by quirks of grammar, human communication, and that word’s purpose in its new language, not conscious disrespect. All languages have loan words in them that are used in ways that seem “strange” or “wrong” to native speakers of the language that word came from.

But I will say that I do not implicitly respect the French, and also if anyone asked me to make them “French style tea” I’d have no idea what they meant.

it’s always when I have things to be doing that this happens but it’s like. I don’t know I’ve gone so far into weird love territory and I’ve been here so long that when I go back and really look at canon it’s like it’s new to me. because like do you ever think about how hanzawa masato just sort of DECIDED that tashiro would be the next captain of the ping pong club. like it wasn’t a recommendation or anything that decision was made. and absolutely if tashiro genuinely GENUINELY didn’t want to do it nothing bad would have really happened, someone else could have done it, sure. you know? but at the end of the day tashiro, in the midst of his running away, had that thought, like. not in a thought bubble but in a b Hold on

in the narration box. like it’s not a fleeting in-the-moment thought like the whole poor shmuck thing. I’m not explaining this well. it’s just you get the impression that tashiro thinks about things a lot and also tangentially kind of thinks about his hanzawa senpai a lot and that realization of burden is so significant to tashiro that he takes on the position of captain

and he doesn’t look him in the face when he does it, and I love it. I love when things are indirect and subtle and sort of reluctant because it’s human and speaks to sincerity and tashiro’s grounded…ness that he isn’t unflinchingly happy to do it. he still doesn’t really want to do it. but he will. and he’ll do it WELL. because and this so matters hanzawa masato just sort of DECIDED that tashiro would be the next captain of the ping pong club because he knows tashiro and has been watching tashiro as a fun kouhai who he likes a lot and who makes him laugh like literally no one else in the world, and he knows that he would be a good president because he is, amongst other relevant things, a good person. the right kind of good person! he wouldn’t have forced tashiro to do it because frankly he couldn’t REALLY force tashiro to do it, tashiro has a way of getting around things (pudding head….) but he decided tashiro would be captain, because he knows tashiro, and tashiro decided to take that on, because he sees hanzawa. he decided that tashiro would be captain, and tashiro decided to accept that decision because hanzawa decided correctly.

and tashiro cares, and encourages his senpai to rest, and we get the FUCKING.

that just speaks VOLUMES. hanzawa masato who notoriously stays busy for at least one of two known reasons that sound a little contradictory but aren’t actually is resting right now. hanzawa masato who is so weird and so unknowable to his juniors is wearing a small smile that, unlike so many of his other ones (ominous as they are, usually), shows for only contentment. he’s resting right now. like the tashiro gonzaburou hanzawa masato dynamic IS so weird I’m not delusional for that. but my favorite thing that I think I do a really bad job of showing is that their exchanges go back and forth and are so much fun for the both of them, and it’s exactly like PING PONG. well matched and silly and hanzawa masato knows tashiro gonzaburou and if tashiro gonzaburou doesn’t know hanzawa masato he sure as hell sees him, and wants to know him, just a little at least, and it’s all so much. I’m resting right now. fuck. anyway

the defense for so much orientalist media these days is “well it can’t be racist bc it’s not about a white savior because the protagonist is flawed/they’re a loser and a fuckup” which is annoying bc it’s arguing a technicality and ignoring the basic point of naming the white savior trope, which is that white people can’t really conceive of nonwhite characters at the same level of humanity as their white counterparts. sometimes that means the white savior rescuing all the poor helpless brown people who can’t think for themselves. sometimes it’s having a white protagonist who fails and does shitty things but all the while it’s presupposed that you, the reader, will relate to the white protagonist and sympathize with them in their struggles, share their viewpoint as they ogle the exotic other. the point is that the white protagonist’s flaws are never taken as an indictment of all white people; they humanize them while nonwhite characters (as powerful or smart or magical or beautiful as they may be) aren’t granted the same luxury.

and that’s not to say that whatever book or movie has no artistic or cultural value, because that’s reductive and stupid. something can be culturally significant or interesting or well crafted AND also suffer from glaring race problems. good criticism should be concerned with all of these things, and talking about one thing should not diminish or erase the others

today i made myself a caramel iced coffee and i'm drinking it out of an empty jar that came free with the pistachio butter that came inside (which was in itself a gift because that is not a common thing around here and so isn't cheap enough for me to justify buying myself) and i think it might be fixing me
