'I Couldn't Even Kiss My Son,' Says Mother of Young Man Killed by Militia in Rio
Adriel Bastos, 24, was tortured and killed because he was in the company of a person suspected of robbery
Tumblr media
On the seventh day of Adriel Andrade Bastos' disappearance, his mother started praying on the banks of the Capenga River in Baixada Fluminense. "Water, give me back my son. Make him resurface," said Andreia Bastos, 49. Days later, the body emerged. The river is one of the tributaries of Guandu, which supplies water to the city of Rio de Janeiro.
According to investigations, both are used by militias to dispose of bodies—exactly what happened to Adriel, tortured and killed in August 2022. "I wish the government could provide support for the children of people who have been victims of this system that is taking over Rio de Janeiro. It's a system that is killing people, leaving children orphaned, leaving families without their loved ones, mothers without their children. It has become a massacre," said Andreia.

it does not follow because that implies that one hundred percent of the male adult population of gaza are militant members of hamas, according to hamas' own numbers. this is obviously bullshit.
or it implies that somehow, israeli strikes hit ONLY civilian women, and children, and ONLY militant hamas members, and civilan adult men are bomb proof. this is also obviously bullshit.
listen, we all know civilians are suffering and are being killed in gaza. no one is questioning this.
but hamas is also definitely lying and fabricating the casulty numbers, and massaging what true numbers they are releasing.
That's... that's literally what I said. Read it again.
Of course Hamas is claiming that all men in Gaza are their own members, because that's what militias do. All militias! Show me a militia, and I'll show you a group who wildly exaggerates their own membership numbers!
"Militias exaggerate their membership numbers" is up there with "Corporations exaggerate the efficacy of their products" as things we should just take for granted at this point.
So why would you believe Hamas -- or pretend to believe them -- about how many of "their fighters" have been killed, or how many "fighters" they have in general? When all available evidence points to the fact that the overwhelming majority of deaths have been civilians, why would you (pretend to) believe a militia self-servingly claiming that all those civilians were really their "fighters"?

Quote
The January 6 insurrection was a grassroots, Christian nationalist event supported and carried out by the Republican Party’s white Christian base—an anti-pluralist, anti-democratic base unmoved by facts and devoted to false conspiracy theories, including The Big Lie—that the 2020 election was “stolen” from Donald Trump. As both influential evangelicals like Sean Feucht and candidates like Doug Mastriano embrace informal security from fascist thugs, and white Christians increasingly accept that violence may be necessary to impose their will on the United States, the crisis of democracy we face comes into ever sharper relief.

So . . . in other words: If we don't have our precious armed private militias, how the hell are we gonna control our slaves and protect our wealth?

Tim Fixes America: GUNS
Tim Fixes America: GUNS
I believe in the Second Amendment, and it is long past time we set up that “well-regulated militia.” Here is  my proposal: If you want a gun, you become a citizen soldier. You undergo a full background check to enlist and a gun training course before getting your weapon. You are required to report on one day every three months for target practice and gun safety refreshers. Your weapon is kept, by…

Also leaving this here.
Reblog the shit out of this.
Iran keeps pulling this kind of shit in Iraq through its PMF proxies and in Syria and Lebanon using Hezbollah (though Hezbollah have a LOT more self agency) (and others).
Also leaving some other resources here for additional information.
Feel free to reblog.

Police militias used to fight Brazil’s gangs. Now they extort, traffic and kill, too.
Tumblr media
For years, police in Rio de Janeiro state have waged a bloody and expensive campaign against the gangs that dominate many of its impoverished favelas.
But all the violence and effort, prosecutors and analysts say, has missed the most pressing security challenge confronting this notoriously turbulent region: A shadow force made up of active and retired police officers themselves, which extorts, traffics drugs and kills at will and with impunity.
These police militias, rooted in Brazil’s authoritarian past but with ties to government today, claim that they’re private security enterprises needed to contain gang violence. But they now control far more of Rio than gangs ever have, researchers say. They have more weapons, more money, more political power. Still, they haven’t raised nearly as much concern among authorities.
“Their explosive expansion constitutes a great threat to democracy,” said Carolina Grillo, a researcher at the Fluminense Federal University in Rio.

A substantive debate can be had over whether Trump understood what forces he was unleashing in the run up to Jan 6. What is beyond question in my mind now, especially connecting the dots between stumping in Waco and declaring “I am your vengeance!” is that Trump clearly believed he owned that mob on Jan 6, it pleases him, and he now absolutely is attempting to raise an army to fight for him (as deniable assets) if 2024 does not go as he wishes. Locking him up is harm reduction and the reduction may not even be all that noticeable at this rate.
He needs to be defeated at the ballot box again clearly because 80 some million people still valued the fig leaf of legalism as a source of authority in 2020 and any more erosion of that norm is going to be real bad. But it won’t be over either. There’s no rules and norms “liberal” rapture coming to make it all go away. We will be dealing with this for a long time to come and probably even after the GOP Diadochi start battling over Trump’s legacy should he stroke out sometime soon.

U.S. launches airstrike in Syria in response to attacks by Iranian-backed militias
U.S. launches airstrike in Syria in response to attacks by Iranian-backed militias
The U.S. carried out an airstrike on a weapons warehouse in eastern Syria used by Iranian-backed militias in retaliation for what has been a growing number of attacks on bases housing U.S. troops in the region for the past several weeks, the Pentagon said. In Wednesday’s strike, two U.S. F-15 fighter jets dropped multiple bombs on a weapons storage facility near Maysulun in Deir el-Zour that was…
