Turns out that O2 does not in fact have a readily available DSL hookup inside this apartment, so, bad. Fortunately their 5G service is the same price and tbh probably as reliable so whatever, I'll take that for a couple months until I get the wherewithal to deal with Vodafone about their weird hybrid fibre/DOCSIS thing. I probably have to go into a store for that because they have not been calling me back.
Technician guy had to phone the O2 call center which took him about 20 minutes, which you'd normally consider a bad thing but that's all telecom providers.
I'm eternally torn between "5G midband is cool as hell because it packs so many users into the spectrum and does it really cleverly in useful ways" and "back in my day we connected computers with a coaxial cable and we liked it". I'm like this about containers and modern software packaging too.

The Rise of 5G - What it Means for You
With faster download speeds and ultra-low latency, 5G is a game-changer for the smartphone market. But the technology isn’t just for mobile data – it’s also set to revolutionise everything from industrial automation and augmented reality to remote health services.
How 5G works Like current cellular networks, the wireless 5G network is split into areas known as cells, each with its own local antennae. It aims to deliver the fastest and most reliable service by using new radio bands, including low- and midband frequencies as well as whole spectrum bands that have never before been used for cellular communications. In addition, 5G uses multi-antenna technologies and beamforming to help deliver higher speeds at greater distances.
Tumblr media
One of the big challenges with building a mobile network is ensuring that there’s enough capacity to handle all the devices that will connect over it. Fortunately, the technology behind 5G has the capability to create software-defined subnetwork constructs known as network slices that allow network administrators to dictate functionality on a per-user or per-application basis. The technology is also designed for forward compatibility so that it can be adapted for future applications.
It’s worth noting that even though the network will be able to offer much faster connections than 4G, you may not notice the difference immediately as many carriers techogle.co are rolling out 5G as a way of boosting existing mobile network capacities rather than as a standalone service. This will allow them to guarantee better connectivity to customers, especially in busy or difficult-to-cover locations.
Once it is fully rolled out, the first thing you’ll likely notice is that videos stream and load more quickly and that video calls are less choppy. Gaming enthusiasts are also eagerly awaiting the rollout of the technology, with its promise of a smooth and immersive virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) experience.
Another benefit of the new network is its ability to support a huge number of connected “Internet of Things” (IoT) devices at the same time. This is important because IoT sensors are often located in hard-to-reach places or in harsh environments where they might not be able to use a WiFi connection.
During an interview with Re/code, Nokia’s Ulrich Dropmann gave the example of a driverless car that could be sent a message via 5G from a sensor on the road to report that it had detected a collision, enabling the vehicle to brake earlier and prevent a crash.
It’s also possible technology website that the network will be able to support remote monitoring and control of equipment, with trials already taking place to use IoT-connected wearable devices in the NHS to monitor patient health remotely. At MWC, Ericsson demonstrated the potential for IoT in industry by allowing visitors to strap on an Oculus Rift headset and remotely operate a Doosan excavator thousands of miles away in Sweden.

stats write up: introduction
Mantis shrimp, also known as stomatopods, possess one of the most remarkable visual systems across the animal kingdom. Mantis shrimp have a pair of compound eyes, like those of bees and flies, with one on each side of their head. Their highly sophisticated eyes allow them to perceive their surroundings in full color vision, UV vision, and polarized vision. Each eye is composed of thousands of individual light-detecting units called ommatidia. The individualized nature of ommatidia allows the eyes to be regionalized, with three distinct sections known as the dorsal hemisphere, the midband, and the ventral hemisphere. The greater part of the “remarkable” vision in Neogonodactylus oerstedii occurs in the midband, containing 6 distinct rows of ommatidia that are all specialized for different functions. The regionalization of the midband has been well defined, but the dorsal and ventral retina had not been explored for any regionalization in function.
The mantis shrimp Neogonodactylus oerstedii uses path integration to navigate when foraging (Patel and Cronin, 2020).  It relies on celestial cues as seen through Snell's window, including the polarization pattern of the sky, for compass orientation.  Recently, Porter et al. (2020) reported that receptors in the most dorsal ommatidia of the upper hemisphere express a unique assortment of opsins, with boosted expression of several short-wavelength opsin transcripts. This implies specialization for short-wavelength sensitivity and polarization analysis in the most dorsal ommatidia, resembling the dorsal rims of many terrestrial insects (Labhart and Meyer, 1999). Dorsal rims are a defined structure present in the dorsal-most edge of compound eyes in insects used for navigation and orientation. It is a cluster of ommatidia specialized for shorter wavelengths and celestial polarization analysis. The short-wavelength sensitivity present in the upper hemisphere of mantis shrimp contributes to the idea of polarization sensitivity as it is blue shifted for sky analysis. We thus set out to characterize this novel ocular region.
We used microspectrophotometry to measure the spectral sensitivities in three regions of the eye. (1) The outermost dorsal region of the retina (druv). This is the area where the proposed regionalization, or dorsal rim, is occurring. (2) The outermost ventral region of the retina (vrim). This is to control for any variation occurring solely due to location rather than function. If the dorsal and ventral outermost regions are similar to each other AND significantly different from the rest of the retina, then the location of the retina may be causing the difference instead of the proposed function for skylight specialization. Lastly (3) the peripheral region (pr). This is composed of everything that is NOT the midband or the outermost dorsal and ventral regions. This includes photoreceptors from both the dorsal and ventral hemispheres that are not on the outer edge of the retina. Preliminary testing that did not analyze the outermost regions separately shows that the dorsal and ventral retina are not significantly different. If the outermost region is different from the rest of the hemisphere, regionalization is occurring.
Spectral sensitivities are typically measured in a curve that highlights the spectrum of absorption, but for the sake of comparison we will be looking at the average peak absorption. The average peak absorption is the maximum Wavelength of light that can be absorbed by a sample, averaged across many samples. In this report I test the hypothesis that the dorsal most region of the eye of Neogonodactylus oerstedii has different spectral sensitivities (average peak absorption) than the rest of the eye, and thus possesses the ability to interpret celestial polarization for navigation.

FrontRo Electrostatic Speakers Now on Demo at HFL, Fancy Something a Little Different?
Tumblr media
Hi Everyone,
As I've said many times before speakers are my favorite part of the HiFi chain, there are so many excellent choices out there, so many different technologies and they come in all shapes and sizes and I can honestly say I have never seen a speaker like the FrontRo by Mellow Acoustics so when I was offered a chance for a listen I jumped at it, more because I was intrigued to be honest but I had no idea that they would sound as good as they do so I am really pleased to say that we now have a pair on permanent demo.
Other than the sound what I really love about these speakers are that they look totally unique, they are certainly getting attention in the shop, not everyone wants a big cabinet imposing in their room but in the past most lifestyle products may deliver on looks but are really left wanting when it comes to sound quality, that really isn't the case with the FrontRo speakers, you can now have a speaker that will blend into your living space, look cool but also sound amazing.
So what are they I hear you say, basically they are a hybrid passive speaker comprising of 12" Electrostatic unit, the top round part, that handles the midrange and treble,  partnered with a conventional 5.25" dynamic driver to handle bass duties, they are all designed and build in the UK.
They have been developed by Tim Mellow who was kind enough to visit us and explain his new 'Oscillating Sphere' concept on which these speakers are designed to create a big, wide and live sound, I've stolen the below from his website rather than recycle it -
'Unlike other electrostatic loudspeakers on the market, FrontRo uses an innovative concept to prevent the waves from beaming towards you: The Oscillating Sphere. Imagine a rigid sphere oscillating back and forth in free space, spreading the sound out in all directions across the entire musical spectrum. This is the perfect dipole sound source and has a smooth response.
Having always admired the clear and detailed sound of electrostatic loudspeakers, Tim Mellow set out to create a new design that was more efficient, compact, and attractive in the home than anything previously available. Also, nearly all loudspeakers he heard sounded nothing like music played live in the room because most real instruments don’t beam the sound towards you at certain frequencies. Hence, loudspeakers generally lack the room-filling effect of live music that immerses you in reflected sound to produce that lovely sense of space and airiness.
Tim spent over five years, designing and developing his own concept for a new type of hi-fi speaker, driven by his desire for a way of reproducing recorded music as if it were a live performance. A benefit of the improved quality of the reflected sound is that it is recognized by the ear as belonging to the direct sound so that the two are combined (Haas effect), which in turn enhances the stereo image. If you close your eyes, you can hear where each musician is located.'
I must admit that I was intrigued more than anything but I really didn't expect them to sound as good as they do, if you do want a speaker to compliment your interior rather than dominate it but don't want to compromise on sound quality then the FrontRo speakers from Mellow Acoustic really do need to be considered as I am sure you will be as surprised and impressed as I was.
Please find a couple of reviews below -
David Price, StereoNET: “It possesses all the desirable traits of a great electrostatic – a superb, near translucent midband, super quick transients and no nasty boomy box sounds ….. you get an excellent sense of spatiality; it’s a truly expansive sound and not one that beams out at you”
Paul Messenger, Hi-Fi+: “The bass line was invariably crisp, clear and well defined….The vocal talents of Joplin were portrayed well on the FrontRo, suggesting a speaker of rare detail, vocal clarity and dynamic range…This is a loudspeaker with a distinct focus on sound that simply does the business, supplying good sound quality wherever one sits and outstanding quality if you listen in the sweet spot.“
Jess Marshall, Luxury Lifestyle Magazine: “(FrontRo) speakers are, an investment in music, an investment in entertainment, and an investment in interior design. For music lovers everywhere speakers don’t get much better, or more stylish than this.”
Jarone Ashkenazi, Upscale Living: “After five years of development paying meticulous detail to design and audio quality, FrontRo has positioned itself as possibly the world’s most luxurious electrostatic audio units.”
Please find a link below to FrontRo on our Website below -

Weekly output: Verizon Tracfone purchase approved, spectrum-sharing progress, cloud-storage choices
This year’s Thanksgiving, unlike last year’s, did not warrant descriptions like “house arrest.” And now I will follow up that overdue family time by flying almost 5,000 miles away from my own for a tech event, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Tech Summit 2021. I have clients awaiting coverage of this event (and who are fine with Qualcomm covering the airfare and lodging, another departure of sorts for me)…

John Stankey, president and head operating official, and approaching Chief of AT&T Inc. talked up broadband, HBO Max, and 5G today at the J.P. Morgan Worldwide Technology, Media and Communications Meeting. Stankey said the organization's market center is around giving customers broadband through its fiber and versatile networks and software-based entertainment contributions like HBO MAX and AT&T TV. All the more importantly, he reaffirmed AT&T's arrangement to have a nationwide 5G network set up by this late spring (that's some time before 3GPP Discharge 16 are often implemented or ITU IMT 2020 standard completed). Support ATT Service In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Stankey said the flexibility of AT&T's remote, broadband and enterprise organizations gives the organization confidently in its ability to still generate strong incomes to require an edge in key capital regions including fiber, 5G and HBO Max, comfortably spread its profit and pay down debt. Additionally, he noted that it continues to be trying to predict the length or depth of the pandemic's general monetary impact or its effect on the organization's general business. Here are a couple of highlight telecom related quotes from Stankey: "Remote business at its center stays strong, but the activity environment could likewise be a touch smothered fundamentally thanks to distribution. Wandering elements have put some weight on incomes but the center is looking excellent ." "On the SMB side, its slightly ahead of schedule to tell on the off chance that they'll be a bounceback," concerning the uncertainty of when numerous SMBs will re-open. "I think we'll be during a sensibly moderate move pull out of the low finish of the market. I don't expect this to be a snappy snap-back this year." "We want customers to start out thinking about connectivity (and content) so we'll develop our advertising business after some time HBO Max is that the front of our entertainment distribution platform." He noted that both HBO Max and AT&T TV are software based (OTT TV bundles) that are independent of the hidden transmission/conveyance network. "Any discretionary shopper spending are getting to be under survey" in light of the monetary hardships and distress forced by COVID-19 possess homes. which can almost certainly end in additional line cutting and decreased spending on traditional compensation TV groups. Nationwide 5G inclusion by mid-year: "It's working out positively. We're starting from an exceptionally strong position. Our implanted (cell) network is performing likewise or better than any network out there. We've included over 70% capacity since the highest of 2017 and are expansive spectrum holding (mmW, midband and lowband) that we've the pliability to all or any or any or any ocate traffic to those , puts us in excellent position for sending 5G." "In the mid year we'll have nationwide inclusion of 5G. Our customer base over-lists (?) on Apple products, but Apple hasn't declared a 5G product yet… . I feel great on how things are arranging." What 5G empowers when broadly conveyed: " A profoundly overseen WAN with extraordinary degrees of security that supports the sort of environments we're in today. It plays alright into the enterprise. New plans of action will develop, including manufacturing floor, clinical communities and establishments." AJW Comment: This reiterates that AT&T continues to concentrate its 5G strategy on enterprise customers versus shoppers which we expect that's the place the development are getting to be , particularly if ultra low latency and ultra high reliability are added to the 5G specs (those two capabilities aren't almost complete in 3GPP Discharge 16 and non-existent within the ITU-R IMT 2020 RIT/SRITs being advanced. How to contact att support phone number Yesterday, AT&T CFO John Stevens told a Moffet-Nathanson virtual gathering that the organizations that start of the COVID-19 emergency fit as a fiddle might want to require advantage of 5G-related cost efficiencies.

The problem is, not every aircraft has a modern radar altimeter. Both sides acknowledge that at least some altimeters are affected by signals from outside the intended spectrum bands. To be clear, this is a malfunction — but it’s a malfunction that wouldn’t have been relevant before C-band came online. As things stand now, it’s not clear how many faulty altimeters are out there or how they’ll respond to a flood of 5G traffic.

5 leading 5G services making difference for pay-as-you-go customers
Tumblr media
5G services, the current generation of mobile network, offer faster internet, reduced congestion, and higher capability for numerous devices than its 4G forerunner. Already, 5G is gaining the interest of consumer cellular service users, but business acceptance of developing use scenarios is widely predicted to be 5G’s breakthrough application.
5G refers to fifth-generation cellular technology that allows multigigabit data rates, which are projected to outperform standard landline network speeds. While the theoretical speed of 20 Gbps is appealing, the low latency of 1 millisecond or less is even more appealing for corporate applications such as augmented reality, internet of things (IoT), location monitoring, and branch connection. 5G has the possibility to be more reliable than previous generations of cellular services due to built-in encryption.
What is the operation of 5G?
To transmit messages over the millimeter wave band, 5G services employ a massive network of tiny cell sites situated on light poles and building roofs, among other places. A millimeter wave may only travel small distances due to its shorter wavelength and is sensitive to weather and barriers such as buildings, walls, coated windows, and flora.
Millimeter wave technology performs best in heavily inhabited locations or open venues, such as factories or stadiums, where low-powered tiny cell stations may be blanketed to adequately obtain line of sight and amplify radio transmissions.
Less congested locations can also benefit from 5G, but they must employ lower frequency bands, such as low-band and midband, with the tradeoff being assistance for lesser devices at possibly lower speeds and higher latency. For the time being, many firms are focusing their corporate 5G initiatives on crowded areas or open venues in order to take full use of 5G’s potential.
