Micro Comic Summer - A Summary

August 2023

Last year in 2022, Hiveworks introduced the art challenge Micro Comic Summer as a tag on Twitter. Creators took to the challenge and produced four page comics that were shared on the final day of August. This year, we’re encouraging more creators to participate in the challenge. Want to know how? Read on.

Micro Comic Summer is one of many online art challenges that bring creators together to complete a project and share their work with their community. Other well known examples of art challenges include Hourly Comic Day, where artists draw a comic panel for every hour of their day on February 1, and Inktober, a 31 day challenge in the month of October to ink a new illustration every day. While these challenges have artists flexing their endurance and speed, Micro Comic Summer takes a different approach: slow, experimental, sustainable creation.

Very frequently, comic artists face unsustainable working conditions, as many are the sole creator behind projects that require multiple skill sets (such as writing, penciling, inking, flatting, lettering, and so on), often on top of day jobs.

The rules of Micro Comic Summer take into consideration the working conditions of comic creators, particularly in fast paced environments like social media, and attempts to buck the norm.

The rules of Micro Comic Summer are as follows:

Rule 1- Tell a story in four pages. This rule is possibly the most challenging aspect: to be succinct and efficient with your page count. Some creators have used this challenge as an opportunity to redraw old webcomic pages or introduce new readers to their pre-existing characters and story. What story you tell is completely up to you, but the four page maximum is in place to prevent overexertion.

Rule 2 - You have all summer (or winter, for the southern hemisphere) to do it. From June to the end of August, take your time to perfect your paneling, edit your story, and choose your palette thoughtfully. There is no need to make snap decisions or cut corners for this challenge. The timeframe is meant to encourage exploration and growth.

Rule 3 - Share it online. Use the tag #MicroComicSummer to share your work with others on August 31. Contribute to the conversation around comic artist working conditions.

While Hiveworks introduced Micro Comic Summer, anyone is free to participate. Participation in the tag does not mean you’re submitting your work to us, nor does it mean we own it. It’s just a hashtag, for fun :)

My love has always been passed on, no exceptions. It makes me wonder how many times love was offered to me and I passed on it. If karma is real and I'm starting to believe it is, knowing that the pain I go through is only a replica of the pain I inflicted justifies the hurt just enough to make it bearable. There is no way of knowing whether I will love again in this intensity because I don't seem to have it in me anymore. And it breaks my heart even more to know that maybe someone has felt this way and I have just shrugged it off because I didn't consider their feelings as important as mine. Perspective keeps changing and yet it always is the right one to keep in that moment. Funny how it works, isn't it?

On the one hand, I'm bitter that I spent time on my Sunday working on this. On the other hand, I'm glad to have finally learned how to create the progress tracker in my Notion planner.

It's the end of the year soon. I've already set my 2023 resolutions. Who knows if all the resolutions will be kept, but I'm determined and at least I will have these little progress bars to keep me motivated & on track. ★★★★★

Anyone who writes, on paper or otherwise, rarely lies during the process. Imagine someone going to great lengths to put their thoughts on a medium where they can probably look again. Why would anyone want to put a lie there? Writing fiction is different. This is about writing to vent, to pour everything out. Why would anyone in their right minds lie to their diary? Or their notes app? When you're bleeding ink, or the digital equivalent of ink, there is so little incentive to lie that no one bothers with it. That's why people protect their words. The notes apps in our phones or our diaries are off limits simply because we have written with the inherent understanding that whatever is written will stay between the medium and you. And what else do we need? We need that true promise that whatever is said should remain walled because not everything is meant for everyone to read or hear. That's why diaries had locks, that's why apps have locks. And when everything is locked and the only key is with you, why would you lie? What do you have to hide from yourself? That's why anonymous accounts are so popular. It allows you to be brutally honest. Anonymous blogs are blatant truths, heartbreaking ones. Truths that you desperately want to share but not with someone who knows you. Because familiarity will allow contempt and god knows contempt is not something you want while venting. So writing, in its very essence, is telling the truth. There are no lies told when the person you are writing to and writing for is yourself.
