Welcome to this month’s Artist Picks series! For July’s theme, we have invited Michael Carini of @acrylicalchemy to curate posts around the idea of “Finding Your Unique Self.”
Here is what Michael had to say about it below!
What does "The Art of Finding Your Unique Self” mean to you?
I think this will mean something different to each and every person, as it should. In a world dominated by a group-think mentality, I encourage you to find the individual in you, the divergent. For me, the journey to find myself has been a long and sometimes painful road. It’s the only road worth taking, though. It has taken me my entire life to get where I am in this moment, and I discovered a lot of people I was not in the process. I’m still trying to find out exactly who I am, and I will until the day I die, growing and changing until I do. If you’re feeling lost, know that you are right where you need to be and that it’s okay. Lost is always just a step away from found. You are not alone. Take risks. Go after your dreams. This is your one life, and only in the pursuit of your true authentic self can you truly find peace and happiness… it’s within yourself. Your most authentic self is exactly who you are meant to become. Get out there and find that self.
Don’t be afraid to be different…Be afraid to be the same.
Why did you pick these particular posts?
As an artist, I always said I never wanted to be a juror because I would never want to push some people forward while holding others back. I don’t like to judge, and I don’t see art as a competition. There is room at the table for all of us. This was such a wonderful and beautiful opportunity, though, because it offered the former in that I can push some people forward while leaving nobody behind. I approached this process with an open mind, seeking a broad repertoire of history, styles, and unique voices spanning a variety of mediums. Some of which I actively pursue, and some that I don’t. I think it’s important to value our areas of interest but also acknowledge the merit of that which we may not always give the proper time, love, and respect. I wanted to reflect a variety from the abstract, to the surreal, to the representational, to dance, to music, to photography, to poetry, to AI, to the simple beauties of life. Because there is art in everything. I also came across some posts where the statements moved me…people sharing their stories and their vulnerability. I can think of no more direct path to finding your unique self. Sometimes you have to put yourself out there, knowing you may be judged by some that hide behind screens and project only false trophy images of themselves. In sharing your true unique self, though, perhaps we can be the change the world needs.
Braska says we're tired...but we're still going. She also says we have lots of art available for you and we have an open studio Nov 12 for the UHarts Open.
"Consumption Of The White Whale (Ahadevale)" is one of my marquee paintings. This 60in x 60in painting dives into elements of obsession with historical references to Moby Dick and Georgia O'Keeffe. Hit me up for inquiries.
My gesso brush served me well and accompanied me on many journeys. Alas, its time came to an end and it was time to retire. As a final send off, it was framed with a paint cloth and gifted with my latest commission, its final journey across the canvas.
