It's World Goth Day. It may or may not surprise ye to know that I was gothy back in the 80s and 90s, when people called us "Freaks", not "Goth", before all the pvc and scantily clad bondage stuff. Basically, The Doors were the first band to be coined "Gothic Rock" by a journalist in 1967, I think it was. My generation o' it was The Cure, Bauhaus, Siouxsie & The Banshees, etc... We were basically depressed punks in black. Ally Sheedy in Breakfast Club was a good example. Very different from the Goth image, 1990s and onward. Due to my severe depression, wearin' all black with make-up made sense...like a way to fade away into the dark. I don't really have many photos o' me from back then but much o' that aesthetic still molds the art and values I hold to this day. I'm not an upbeat shanty singer, I'm a depressed pirate. A lot o' talk this week about men in drag. I grew up pretty gothy in the 80s and 90s and I'm a guy who never cared what people think o' me or if they care what I'm wearin'. I've worn skirts, dresses, make up, and some styles that have caused dudes to pick fights with me, insult me, throw stuff at me from movin' vehicles, etc... (Side note: some o' them had to live with the fact that they were beaten up in front o' their friends by a guy in a skirt and make up) It's just clothes and style. Get over it, people. But, when it comes to drag and LGBTQ+, it's identity and who they are, so ye haters have zero leg to stand on. Who are ye to say what other people can wear? These are probably the same people who say they love the constitution and the 1st and 2nd amendments, not wantin' anyone to infringe on those rights...but then they infringe on freedom o' expression all the time. And these ignorant fools like to say that dressin' in certain ways harms children...how? Why are ye raisin' yer children to be scared o' clothes? Clothes. How weak are ye? Recognize that yer ignorant and being brainwashed into hatin' people for NO reason. A lil' ventin'... I haven't posted too much on social media since December because my usual depression ramped up and what some people don't know is depression can make ye feel 3000% unmotivated and uninspired and self-loathin'. Fightin' every single day to not die is perhaps more exhaustin' than ye can imagine. Last night I came close. I harm myself a lot too, which is another aspect o' suicidal tendency. I thought I'd go out today to get a beard trim and maybe buy some new clothes and a book, but today there's a freezin' rain situation and emergency weather alert...so...no treatin' myself today. And no, I don't need people sayin' I can talk about it to them because I know ye don't really want to deal with mental health issues, ye just put the offer out there. I think I just need some love soon. It's been too long without. Kindness from friends is not the same. A lifetime o' negativity and a continent filled with ignorant anti-science immoral dolts is weightin' very very heavily on me too. I find myself gettin' angry easier and I snap at people quicker. Maybe I need a vacation away from my already sedentary life, and find someone for a coffee and snuggle date. Today is my dad's birthday. He passed away at the start o' the first Covid lockdown a few years back. We got along well enough but were fairly estranged too. We were very different people in our views, interests, and pretty much everythin' but we both had a similarity when it came our "serious one minute, silly the next" personalities. He never raised a fist or harmed a soul, outside o' his emotional distancin'. As I'm comin' close to the end o' my Mass Effect Legendary Edition journey, with only one mission left before I pass the point o' no return toward the finale, I thought I'd post this article on Facebook and Instagram (by Ben Lindbergh of The Ringer) that explains just how important pop culture is to us and how investin' in a story can be extremely impactful (for better or for worse). So, if yer readin' this on Instagram, I apologize that ye can't see the link, just part o' the article's headline in the photo, because social media sucks except for Facebook, regardless o' what the kids say. 😄 We can all accept and move forward, feel disappointed and speak up, or do what we've seen become the norm on the internet for the past decade...become toxic and throw tantrums, callin' it "freedom". I played the original Mass Effect series many times and still hold the opinion that it is a top 3 greatest game o' all time (along with the Red Dead Redemption series and The Last Of Us series). Luckily, Bioware listened to the fans and amended the final game in the trilogy with an extended cut, which has now become the standard version in this remastered Legendary Edition a decade later. Still, we must be a bit more flexible and a bit more intelligent with what fights we choose and what outcomes we demand. Stay calm.
