a recipe for pound cake

i was born and raised in the deep south. food has always been one of my love languages. making food for someone, accepting food someone made for me, sharing meals, sharing recipes, to me, all of these are different ways to tell someone i love them.

this is especially true for any sort of treat, as i call them. any sort of confection tbh. some of them are baked, some of them are just "fixed," they are all just Treats to me. i have a vicious sweet tooth, and that comes out in the treats i like to make.

this particular recipe comes from my late grandmother's recipe book. she compiled it years ago, had multiple copies printed through some on-demand make-your-own-cookbook printing service she found online, and gave them out as christmas gifts to multiple family members. this specific recipe, she mentions in the book, comes from my great-grandmother, her mother, who we all called mi-ma.

and if there is anything that little old southern ladies know how to do, it's make a mean cake.

INGREDIENTS:

1/2 pound (2 sticks) of butter, room temperature (~227 g)

2 1/2 cups, plus 3 tablespoons, of sugar (~672 g)

6 eggs, separated

3 cups all-purpose flour (~375 g)

1 cup sour cream, room temperature (~240 g)

1/4 teaspoon baking soda (~1.5 g)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract (~5 ml)

1 teaspoon lemon extract (~5ml)

DIRECTIONS:

cream the butter and sugar together

add the egg yolks

add the baking soda to the flour

alternate mixing in the flour mixture and the sour cream to the sugar mixture

add vanilla and lemon extracts to the egg whites, and beat to soft peaks

fold the beaten egg whites into the batter; mixture will be thick

grease either a bundt pan or a loaf pan about twice as much as you think you will need to. i am not joking. this batter is so incredibly sugary sticky and you will hate your life trying to get it to release if you don't grease the hell out of your pan.

put the pan into your COLD OVEN. COLD. DO NOT PRE-HEAT IT. PUT IT INTO THE OVEN COLD. then turn the oven to 300 degrees F (~149 C). bake 1 1/2 hours

let cool on a baking rack

be annoyed because you probably didn't grease the pan well enough

this is a dense, deliciously savory vanilla pound cake with a very lightly caramelized outer crust. they freeze well for make-ahead purposes, and they ship well for i-have-a-long-distance-friend-who-needs-a-treat purposes.

the first time i made this cake was after my grandmother died days before my father's birthday. it was my birthday cake for him that year, and i thought (hoped) that a cake from his mother's—his grandmother's—recipe might ease the heartache for just a moment. i did tell him as i cut each of us a slice where i got the recipe from, and joked that i'd never made it before, so it might not be as good as mi-ma or grandmama made it. he laughed and cut into his slice with a fork and—his eyes closed when he took a bite. and another. and then he smiled for the first time i'd seen in several days.

since then i've made the cake several more times, for friends and family in grief: frightening medical diagnoses. losing other friends. depressive bouts. and while i will not be boastful enough to claim that this pound cake actually cures anything, i WILL say that being sad with a slice of pound cake is a much nicer feeling than being sad without one. and you know what? that seems to be the general consensus among the recipients, too.

this is a pound cake that tastes like love.

i hope that this recipe helps other people to pass along some of that love too, whether to themselves or to someone else.

i think mi-ma and grandmama both would've liked that. :)

If you're talking about the black-to-ghosty/witchflame green transition, like the tabards and standard of my mortek guard:

The sad answer to my black-to-green cloth scheme is 'too many applications of too many colors. The scheme is mostly taken from this old how-to-paint-Nagash gw youtube video from way back in the end times:

The method's evolved over time, and currently looks like:

Black Undercoat

Celestra Grey at the ends where you want it to be green, jagged up at the top around where the transition to black should happen, like in the nagash video. On a wrinkly cloth area, pick out the higher wrinkles over the transition area.

Incubi Darkness over the black area, stripey overlapping the celestra like in the nagash video, maybe leaving black in the recesses or towards the top for larger areas. If you've got a lot of texture, then the incubi should be on the raised edges up in the black and down in the lowered recesses where it meets the celestra grey for the transition.

First divergence from the Nagash video, I drybrush ulthuan grey over the celestra, heavier towards the ends and very lightly over the transition area.

dilute nihilakh oxide to lahmian medium about 1:2 or 1:3 (play around, see what works), plaint it over the celestra grey and up above the transition a bit. Might work better with contrtast medium instead of lahmian since that's more meant for glazing, I keep meaning to try that, but filled a whole pot with the lahmian mixture and haven't run out of that yet.

Second divergence from the nagash video - they use a very thinned town (like 1:4 with lahmian) coelia greenshade wash many layers until the stripey transition between the black and green disappears. I use slightly less dilution (1:2 or 1:3) for slightly fewer layers, but prepare three separate washes with that mis - nuln oil, coelia, and biel-tan. I start with the nuln oil over the incubi area, while it's still wet I apply the coelia over the transition, letting them mix a bit, and while that's still wet the biel tan over the green area. You probably don't have to do this while they're all wet, though, you can proably start with the blacks up high to get the incubi to fade back into black, then do the coelias over the transition, and then the biel tan over the green. You can also just skip the biel tan, coelia alone is a spookier bluish green, but I like that vibrant witch-fire green at the edges. Again, might be better with contrast medium instead of lahmian medium these days.

Once more or less satisfied with the blend, go back to highlight, starting with incubi darkness in the black areas picking out just raised edges and trailing off as you reach the point in the transition where incubi darkness is no longer lighter than anything else. On large flat areas like the standard, I'll create some highlights of my own, wider at the bottom and pulling up into points kind of like little wicks of flame, and concentrate them at the bottom and sides leaving more black towards the top and middle.

Same Highlight but with Kabalite green, starting and ending a bit lower down the model, tough I might also pick out some of the folds or wrinkles at the very top like on the banner if it seems it needs it.

Again but lower with Sybarite Green

Again but lower with Gauss Blaster Green

Again but lower with Ulthuan Grey.

NOTE: these are supposed to be highlights picking out folds and edges and tattered holes and such, try not to cover up the entire blend. ALSO, unlike normal highlighting, while are picking out raised edges, the brigher highlight is lower down. Like fire.

Variant: nighthaunt upper cowl

no initial blend. Started with incubi, nuln oil wash (separate wash of nuln oil mixed with black paint towards the top, skip straight to the highlight steps 7+, adding a layer or two highly diluted (like 1:4 with lahmian) biel tan over the highlighted areas and a bit up into the black at the end before a second final highight of ultuan grey at the end. This was a lot faster, and in retrospect maybe looks cooler?

ANYWAY, as you would expect, this takes for gods damned ever, so I don't like to do it a lot. In the past I saved it pretty much exclusively for necromancers and necromancer-adjacent characters. Even vampires got plainer green cloth. Nighthaunts are an exception, all the nighthaunts get a version of this, but a faster one that skips the overall blend, mostly just black with (still too many) green highlights. Vampires get more or less the nighthaunt treatment (black w/ green highlights only) on their armor, but I'm considering changing vampire armor to the same method but purple, now that I'm no longer in my green and green alone phase.

OBR get to be the real exception, with the full process on all of their cloth, but they're special (they get not one but two too-effortful parts, the tabbards and the swords), and also I'm already starting to regret it for how long they're taking and might go to more nighthaunt style of just highlights for the tabards, saving the blend for banners & characters.

I hate that I can’t put the fitted sheet on my bed. It always pings back into my face so always have to get my partner to do it and it’s infuriating. I’m an independent woman. Why can’t I do that one thing?

Oh. And if this is referring to making the bed during the day, I leave that duvet folded back and the window open. In a house with kids, ventilation is vital - and that includes the beds!

what's your favourite number?

Don’t think I have one. Umm, prefer even numbers. Not sure why? Maybe it’s because I’m an 80s kid and my teachers were a bit weird!

what is your job?

I’m a copywriter for a marketing agency. Spent today writing about skiing in the Alps followed by 2k words on car insurance. It’s a mixed bag, client-wise 🫠

if you could go back to school, would you?

I loved my secondary school. Honestly, I was the biggest dweeb (I mean, I still am) and weirdly, I have this recurring dream I’m in my sixth form common room. Bloody loved sixth form!

can you parallel park?

Yes, but please don’t watch me as I’ll mess up and have to start over, leading to a big queue forming. When no one’s around I can get that Punto into the spot first go!

a job you had that would surprise people?

People are always surprised that I worked in an opticians for a year. Fun fact: I’m contact lenses and dispensing optician Level One. As I was the admin person who answered the phone, they wanted me to sound like I knew what I was talking about when I was asked stuff by customers (I rarely knew anything about anything). Fun fact 2: Contact lenses freak me out. Glasses all the way!

do you think aliens are real?

It would be weird if we were the only intelligent life forms in the universe. Don’t know what I’d do if I saw an alien though. Probably nothing good.

can you drive a manual car?

I can only drive a manual car. Never tried automatic but always think it sounds a bit like you’re driving a go-kart.

what's your guilty pleasure?

Ooh. Now. I have a lot of pleasures but I’m trying hard not to feel guilty about them (that’s therapy, baby 😂). But does early 00s garage music count? Currently have the lyrics to a Mis-teeq song in my head (All I Want - it’s a banger!) and I kind of want to time travel to 2001 and wear those redundant belts with the massive buckles and teeny skirts teamed with kitten heels again.

Yep, two. One of a fairy because I’m obsessed with fairies. And…umm… stars that look like weird flowers that were added by a guy called Wolf in a dodgy tattoo shop in Sheffield when I was 19. Choices were made. Mostly terrible ones.

Orange.

Ohhh anything that’s not, like, acid house or drum ‘n’ bass. My Spotify Wrapped basically was a mix of stuff from the late 90s and 00s and Thai pop (I wonder why? Ha! 😝)

Wish I did. Really wish I could do them but my brain isn’t logical.

any phobias?

I have pretty severe claustrophobia. Once winded my maths teacher on a school trip to Greece when she tried to put a snorkel on me (panic attack. Not assault. Honest!). And on holiday in Ibiza, my friend had to hold my hand and guide me out of Pacha nightclub when we were meant to be watching Swedish House Mafia. Maybe the moral is I stay put and don’t go abroad? 😂

I’ve always loved dancing. And does rounders count? Loved a game of rounders!

All the time! I work from home on my own all week so I have fascinating chats with myself about what to have for lunch and whether I need another cup of tea.

I went to see Moulin Rouge the musical in London last week as a belated 40th birthday treat and I’d genuinely forgotten how much I love that film. It’s just one of the best ever! So good!

first thing you wanted to be growing up?

This is a funny one. I should probably say I wanted to be a dancer because I was on the stage from the age of 3. But I don’t think I ever did want that. I can clearly remember deciding I wanted to be a journalist, though. I was 9 and reading the local newspaper. Didn’t want to be anything else and it’s actually so nice that I can say I achieved my dream and got to edit magazines. I miss print magazines so much.
