8: How Eclipsa's trial during 3.16.1 should have gone
Follow up to “How Moon and Eclipsa’s talk in 3.15.2 should have gone.”
Eclipsa was sitting in her room when Moon and Omnitraxus Prime walked in. She looked up at them in surprise.
“Moon, Omni! Did you figure out how to do my trial?”
Both of them nodded at that. “We only have one last thing to figure out, and Moon thought we should give you the option.”
Eclipsa turned to Moon at that. “Well, what is it?”
“Technically there are two collections of crimes against you that should be handled by two courts. The first are crimes against the kingdom itself, and the second are crimes against magic and the multiverse.” She then handed two packets to Eclipsa. “These packets have the specifics for you to go over. You can have one week to go over them and then decide which one you want to go through first.”
Eclipsa shot Moon a look. “Can’t I just do both at once and get them over with?”
“Absolutely not! Mewni and the MHC have separate jurisdictions and melding them here would bring that separation into question. If we start prosecuting you for local crimes, other dimensions would start thinking we would mess with their local politicians and either raise a stink or cut off contact with us entirely!”
“Omnitraxus! Calm down!” Moon turned back to Eclipsa. “While his delivery could have been better, he is right. The MHC is an organization that is supposed to be separate from any one government and its issues. This is why the queens of Mewni only become members after we hand over the crown to our daughters, and even then we are forbidden from getting involved with issues related to Mewni.”
Eclipsa then smiled and reached under her bed to pull out two books. One was labeled ‘legal proceedings of the MHC’, while the other was labeled ‘legal proceedings of Mewni.’
“I have been doing some research through some of the books I asked for. There is one way we can do both at once.”
Omni’s eyes began to widen as what she was saying finally realized what she was asking.
“Eclipsa, are you SURE you want to do this? I might not like you, but no one should have to go through that. Every secret and belief you hold will be laid bare for all to see. You will be tried and sentenced on the spot with no chance of appeal. Even Rhomulus’s crystals would be kinder than what it would do to you.”
Eclipsa just stood tall and looked him in the eye, her posture fully conveying the queen she once was.
“I am sure. I have hidden and been hidden long enough. It’s time for everyone to see me for who I really am. If it means I die, then I will die on my terms.”
Moon and Omni looked at each other before looking back and nodding.
“I understand Eclipsa. We will have the trial set up tomorrow.”
She just smiled at Moon. “Thank you.”
Butterfly Throne Room during 3.16.1
Moon’s Throne sat empty at the head of the room with River sitting to its left and Star to its right. The left side of the room had the MHC except Lekmet and Glosseryck. The middle of the room had a stand where Eclipsa stood in handcuffs and her formal wear. On the right side of the room was a jury box with 9 noblemen and women sitting in it.
Star could only shoot the noble a look.
The nobles included a pink-haired woman in a pink and yellow dress holding a flower-printed fan; a dark aquamarine-haired woman with a hat sprouting 4 feathers; a bald man with a bright red beard; a nurse with bright pink hair; a man with dark brown hair and a plain khaki suit; a grey-haired man in a squires outfit; a light purple-haired woman with a beret; a dark red-haired women with a bright red ruby on her chest; and a tall green-haired women with a pair of pine tree shaped earrings and neckless.
Lady Jasmine Flowers, Lady Marine Waterson, Lord Falcon Redbird, Lord Jordan Fields, Lord Percy McKnight, Lady Carice Cross, Lady Berenice Firefly, and Lady Juniper Forest. The 9 heads of the noble houses of Mewni.
Star never had a good relationship with them due to her habit of ignoring rules and making a mess. If what Eclipsa and Moon were saying were true, then that relationship would tank even more.
BANG BANG BANG
“All Rise! The joint court of the Magical High Commission and Mewni is now in session. Her Majesty, Queen Moon of Mewni, presiding.”
Moon then walked in from behind her throne and stood in front of it.
“Thank you. We are gathered here today for the trial of Eclipsa-“
BANG
The door was thrown open by Sean who then pushed in a typewriter.
“Sorry, I’m late! We haven’t had a trial of this magnitude in so long, I didn’t know where to find the typey thingy. I mean, a real trial! This is exciting!”
“That depends on where you’re sitting.”
…
“As I was saying, we’re gathered here today for the trial of Eclipsa.”
Moon shot Sean a look for his loud typing.
“We shall determine once and for all whether Eclipsa has committed the evil deeds recorded in the Mewni histories and the crimes recorded in the Magical High Commission records, or MHC for short. If she is found guilty of the MHC crimes, the punishment will be crystallization. If she is found guilty of the Mewni crimes, she shall be executed. If she is found guilty of both, then she will be executed. Is this acceptable to the MHC?”
“Yeah, though I still think we should just crystalize her now and be done with it.”
“Quiet Rhombulus.”
“Well, that sounds good to me. But what is she doing here?”
Heckapoo pointed at Star.
“This is supposed to be a private hearing!”
“Star is the crowned princess of Mewni. Since I am proceeding, she is representing house Butterfly in asking the question for the trial.”
“I have no objection either Queen Moon.”
Moon nodded in gratitude at Omni before turning to the nobles of Mewni. “Is this acceptable for the nobles of Mewni?”
The nobles all conferred with each other before Lord Redbird spoke up.
“We have no issues with this, Your Majesty.”
Moon then turned to Eclipsa. “Now before we begin, I must ask once more. Are you sure about choosing Trial by Box? The Box is a ruthless seeker of truth. If you attempt to conceal anything from it, crystallization or death may be the least of your worries.”
“I’m tired of sitting around waiting for you to decide my fate. I’ll give you the truth, all of it, and it, and if that means crystallization or death, so be it.”
Moon kept looking at her for a few seconds before turning to Sean.
“Sean, we wish to invoke trial by Box.”
He immediately snapped to attention.
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
He then ran out the door of the throne room before immediately returning, pushing a large and ornate cart labeled “Box of Truth.” He then stood in front of it at attention.
“The Box of Truth has arrived!”
With the pull of a rope, the curtain in the front raised to reveal…
“Wait, is that Truth or Punishment?”
The entire room turned to look at Star.
“What are you talking about Star?”
“A while back Ponyhead brought a box that looked just like that to our sleepover where we played a game with it. called ‘Truth or Punishment.’”
Heckapoo growled in anger at that before pulling out her scissors.
“DON’T! We can worry about what Princess Ponyhead did later. For now, let us continue with the trial.”
Moon then turned to Star. “Star, The Box is not a game!”
Who do you have a crush on?
“Queen Moon!”
Rhombulus then covered where his mouth would be while everyone else in the room just looked at him. Moon just sighed and pinched her forehead while sighing.
“It must be on the wrong setting”
She then picked it up and turned it upside down, revealing a dial with settings labeled party, intervention, bachelorette, and trial. After setting it to the last one, she put it back down.
“The rules are simple. Each member of the MHC and head of a Mewni hobble house may ask one question, and the accused must answer.”
She then taped the top, causing the box to float into the air.
To all who seek the path of knowledge, listen well to this decree. Surrender to the eye of justice. Swear an oath of Truth to me.
The top of the box then rose to reveal a mouth.
“Ooh. Different poem. Different poem.”
One by one everyone put their pinky into the mouth and swore to tell the truth. When the last one did so, it closed and floated into the middle of the room.
And now, it’s time for Trial by Box.
A large eye formed on the outside, shining a light on Eclipsa while a second light emerged beneath it onto an empty spot.
“We will begin with the MHC asking the questions, followed by the Mewmin nobles. Rhombulus?”
Rhombulus walked forward into the second light.
“Eclipsa, did you write the evil chapter in the book of spells? That’s the one filled with dating advice for monsters, your diary entries, and how to cast dark magic spells?”
A panel on the box emerged with the words Exhibit A written on it as a holographic image of the box appeared in front of Eclipsa. The book then flipped through its pages, showing Eclipsa what was in the chapter.
“Yes, I did, but, for the record, I never called it the Evil Chapter. That was your people’s name for it. I wrote plenty of eviler spells that never even made it into the final draft. Writing is rewriting, you know.”
Truth
The nobles looked disturbed at that, while Rhombulus shot Omni a look while the other nodded in response before taking Rhombulus’s place under the light.
“Eclipsa, did you cast dark magic as defined by the MHC despite being warned multiple times not to?”
Eclipsa shrugged. “I have no idea. I never paid attention to the MHC rules on what dark magic is. I highly doubt it is that much different from the Mewmi version of it.”
Truth about not knowing, though her opinion on the differences between MHC dark magic and Mewni dark magic as a definition is incorrect.
Omni looked up at the box. “Can I tell her what the definition is and then have her answer the question?”
The box hovered in silence for several seconds before it responded.
I will allow it due to her ignorance of the topic impacting her ability to tell the truth.
He then nodded and turned towards Eclipsa again.
“To greatly simplify for the sake of time, all magical living things have a tiny magical portal to the magical dimension inside of them that allows them to do magic. The bigger the portal, the more powerful they are. Each one also had filters on it that limit the kinds of magic they can do with it.”
The box’s card changed to Exhibit B before a hologram of a Ponyhead appeared in front of Eclipsa.
“Think of the Ponyheads, they can all float, many have learned to control the weather, and some can shoot lasers from their horns. The laser part is something you need to be born with the filters allowing, while the weather control is something they can all do, but they need to practice it every day to slowly expand the size of their portal so they can do it better and with more control.”
River then raised his hand. “Like muscles! The kinds of exercises you do directly affect which areas of your body get more muscular, but there are genetic limits to how strong you can get that other people might not have. You also can’t exercise to the point of growing wings.”
At that, everyone (including the Box of Truth) turned to look at River in shock.
“River, that was… coherent!”
“Oh, sorry. I didn’t mean to
Omni kept looking at him for a few more seconds before turning back to Eclipsa.
“Let’s move on. Dark Magic is the kind that alters the portals in a target.”
The Ponyhead in the hologram was hit by a holographic beam of magic before breathing fire and then firing a laser strong enough to reduce a mountain to rubble.
“This magic targets the portal in them, forcing it open larger than normal and ripping out some of the filters.”
“So they’re magical steroids? Decrease the amount of training you need to do and drastically increase your performance in some areas, but with massive health repercussions.”
…
“That was two good analogies in a row. Is he a monster in disguise?”
No, he isn’t.
“He is right though.” The hologram then showed the ponyhead being hit by a beam of magic before breathing fire and shooting a laser with enough force to reduce a mountain to dust while bleeding from its eyes and mouth.
The hologram then changed to a Mewman wearing armor and surrounded by a magical bubble.
“As an offensive tool, it can be used to target magic directly to alter the spells of others.”
The magic bubble was hit by a spell before the inside became covered in spikes and closed in on the mewman inside.
Thankfully it ended before the results were shown. It was then replaced with two images, a ponyhead and Toffee.
“It can also kill magical creatures that use magic to survive by severing their portal.”
The ponyhead was struck, causing it to fall to the ground and begin to flop around like a fish out of water.
“Or, it can be added to a spell to allow it to target a creature that would normally be immune to it.”
Toffee was struck in the heart by a blast that caused him to completely disintegrate while Moon looked on in shock.
Omni turned to look at Moon. “You cast it one time in a situation where it was the least bad option. You were never in trouble for this.”
He then turned back to Eclipsa.
“Does this context change your answer?”
She could only blink before turning back to the hologram of her book and flipping through its pages. After several seconds, she closed it and turned back to Omni.
“After reviewing my book, it looks like all my spells had some dark magic in it. Even the ‘all-seeing eye’ had it so it could peer through magical barriers. I also liked how it gave my spells a dark purple color.”
True
Eclipsa began to look worried at this point while Heckapoo walked up to her.
“Do you remember the conversation we had the month before you abandoned your post?”
The box’s card changed to Exhibit C and a hologram of Eclipsa sitting at a table with Heckapoo standing in front of her appeared. The holo-Heckapoo then bowed to Eclipsa, who nodded in response.
“Your Majesty.”
“Heckapoo.”
A serious look came across Heckapoo’s face. “We need to talk about your use of Dark Magic. It is getting out of hand and presents a clear and present danger to you and you people.”
Eclipsa just scoffed at that.
“MY people? The ones that oppose every edict I try to pass? The ones that don’t approve of me doing anything that doesn’t directly benefit them? I have read the list of what makes magic dark, and if I limited myself to that I wouldn’t be able to do anything except kill monsters and benefit people that wouldn’t lift a finger to help me.”
“Oh yeah, you’re right about that. But just because they are jerks doesn’t give you the right to sign their death warrants. Also, I am not talking about what they call dark magic, I mean what we call Dark Magic.”
Holo-Eclipsa just scoffed. “Do you think I care about the difference?”
“You should! Our definition is the kind that specializes in destroying magic! If cast inappropriately on a magical dimension, like Mewni, then you could destroy the entire thing! It has already happened 30 times!”
“Yeah, and if I keep eating Snookers, I will clog my arteries while giving food to monsters will destroy our economy. I am not going to let so-called ‘exerts’ from anywhere restrict me from doing what I think is right. I am going to do what is best for me and the people I care about, and take my lumps if it turns out I am wrong.”
She then looked holo-Heckapoo in the eye. “Now, get out of my office.”
Holo-Heckapoo scowled at her before bowing and then made a portal before she stepped through it.
Eclipsa just stared at it in horror.
“Yes, I do remember that. My response to you sounded a lot more reasonable before I heard it again.”
True.
The entirety of the room was now staring at Eclipsa at that moment. The MHC in anger, the nobles in disgust, and the Butterflies in horror.
Moon then stood up herself.
“Let us take a 15-minute break before we let the nobles ask their questions.”
There was a chorus of agreements before the box was deactivated and everyone left the room except Eclipsa.
She could only sit at her podium and gaze at the box.
“Did they have a point with crystalizing me?”
2,920 words in one chapter and I am not even done. Because of this, I decided to split it into thirds. We will explore the questions of the nobles next week, Eclipsa’s question, and the fallout after that.
I based how the Box of Truth talks off how Death talks in the Discworld novels, let me know how it translates here so I know if I should change it for the 2 direct sequels to this. Also, did you catch “The Good Place” reference I slipped in?
As for the Dark Magic, it always bothered me how everyone was saying how bad it was she used it and they dropped plenty of in-universe hints on its dangers, but never followed up on it and instead went with “she is a misunderstood woman who’s only crime was falling in love with a monster.” More on this here.
To deal with this, I wrote up a new magic system that was partially explained here. I will see If I can write up a one-shot explaining it in the future.
I decided for my New Year's Resolution to do one fanfic chapter a week for all of 2024. Who knows how long I will be able to keep this up, but next week's fanfic chapter is up on my Patreon. This is also being posted on Fanfic.com, AO3, and Tumbler.
