how would you discern a mage of mind from a prince of time?

hey there! this was a fun ask :) my interpretation under the cut

interestingly, both prince and mage share the aspect of heart, which makes this breakdown a little easier (even if we dont see too much of meulin in comparison to dirk). by reverse-engineering their relationships to their aspects, we can make some reasonable guesses for these two here.

prince of time

singlehandedly the first thing i think of with princes is destruction. direct, specific destruction both of and through their aspect is the hallmark of a prince. a prince of time, then, destroys time or through time. at their best, a prince of time destroys doomed timelines, failed offshoots of the alpha timeline, etc. at their worst, they lean more towards destroying time, which is obviously Very Bad.

of course, both facets of the aspect have upsides, and honestly delineating between the two is fruitless. a prince can often be seen destroying their aspect with their aspect; eridan destroying the session's hope with his own personal ideals, dirk destroying (or at least, attempting to destroy) the trickster mode kids' false ideas of themselves, upscaled by the sucker, with his own heart; his resistance to the effects of the sucker.

as a result, princes are inherently reactive. a prince of time in particular is very reactive, coming into action once a timeline has already started going off the rails rather than taking action to prevent that in the first place. as a time player, they're also prone to prioritizing the big picture and the concrete over minute details and abstraction. time, along with space, are the most concrete aspects in the layout of the game.

mage of mind

something i want to clarify before we dive in here: this is my personal interpretation of the mage class. mages are fickle, and as one of the 4 classes that we never get a human example of, we know very little about them. that being said, i believe it works something like this;

a seer looks into their aspect and interprets it, they analyze the aspect themselves; a mage's actions are guided more directly by the hand of their aspect. seers literally "see" visions, mages hear whispers. sollux hears the voices of the doomed; meulin is guided by her "feels", her self, and her former matesprit (though that connection is a little looser). at their best, a mage is attuned to their "voice", and they take the best course of action for their group as a whole. at their worst, they uncritically listen to their voice and they or their team suffer (sollux's voices peak when glb'golyb kills the trolls, and he dies; meulin's heart wants to see horuss happy, and she tells him to smile even when he's struggling).

a mage of mind would be guided by mind itself; where terezi scries into mind, into outcomes and decisions, using the outcomes to make her choices consciously, a mage of mind would make decisions less consciously (though still with full intent). a mage of mind is less likely to fall into the trap of uncritical listening, as mind's whole domain is choices and outcomes; perhaps a mage of mind's fatal flaw is instead not considering heart, focusing too heavily in on strict logical choices that they fail to remember that sometimes people make choices without logic; with emotion, or heart instead.

mind tends towards abstraction, little details, and proactiveness.

mage of mind vs prince of time

a mage of mind and a prince of time, beyond their connected purpose in ensuring their team stays on the right path, have little in common. mind is proactive; time reacts to the circumstances in front of them, often needing to "rewind" to do it right a second time. mages don't tend to doubt themselves; princes often struggle with their relationship to their aspect. mind is abstract, time is concrete. mind is little details and intricacy, time is flexible, reshapable; the finer details are irrelevant as long as everything is on track. while you may see a mage doubting their voice, or perhaps a time player obsessed with every single detail, in broad strokes these two shouldn't be too hard to untangle.

Karkat Vantas 1 - Earth C - Dave & John

I don't remember a lot from the meteor other than at one point I think Kanaya was drinking something and then laughed. It was a purple drink (probably faygo oof) and it came out of her nose. I know that Dave liked to fuck around with music and he had that Hella Jeff and Sweet Bro comic he used to do. Nepeta and Terezi vandalized almost the whole meteor with their scribbles but otherwise, I don't remember there being a lot to work within forms of art. As annoying as he was, John was probably my moirail. He was the only other person that bothered to even attempt to pretend he was listening when I went off on a tangent about what was frustrating me other than Dave. That and, when they weren't aimed at me, he'd include me in planning out all these crazy elaborate pranks. I have a couple of memories on Earth C where we went out into some of the woods. I know that Gamzee, Sollux, and John were with me. John kept jumping out of nowhere and Gamzee almost got fed up and bashed his head in with a tree branch. My least favorite memory is of John dying the first time because he was the only human I really talked to at that point. One time Crab Dad and I were sparring and I remember it turned into kind of an arm wrestle with my sickle vs. his claw. Eridan was very manipulative towards Feferi but otherwise, his ego was the size of Mt. Everest towards the rest of us. Dave almost threw hands with fish dick, from what he tells me. Nepeta, Tavros, Jade, and John had a big group roleplay thing going on I think.

Karkat 2 - Doomed - Eridan & Sollux

Anger issues that never got fixed. Big depression from fuck if I know what. Doomed timeline because I don’t remember Earth C from this one. Terezi wasn’t a very fair judge, to put it subtly. She didn’t really share my feelings much to begin with and Vriska used my feelings for Terezi to manipulate me a lot. Terezi knew about it and let it happen. I remember her telling me this herself later on at some point. Eridan and I watched tons of movies together and we talked to each other about Sollux a lot, me in a flushed way and him in more of a pitched light.

Mituna Captor - Dream Bubbles - Cronus & Kurloz

It's mostly memories from before "the accident" where Cronus was a pretty rad friend with whom I exchanged meaningless insults with and shit. It was mean and shit, yeah, but we knew we were just dicking around. Kurloz was my moirail for a long time and the three of us hung out a lot. The only reason Kurloz stopped liking Cronus after what happened was because of his reactions to what happened to me and the impact of the incident on my brain and how I didn't remember him the same way. Latula wasn't all that in the picture until right before the accident and she was a lot like Paige from Atypical (if you haven't watched that show on Netflix, I highly recommend you do) where she had a lot of rules and shit that she needed to work through. I don't know entirely when, but Kurloz eventually was able to get it through my dense, mashed potato brain after the incident that she wasn't all that great for me and, after hyperfocusing on what he'd pointed out for a little while, I found myself agreeing with him and eventually ended my matespritship with Latula. Kurloz and Meulin didn't work out for some reason can't remember, but I know he told me what happened and after a while, Kurloz and I got together as matesprits. I stumbled upon one of those memory bubbles and it happened to be one of Cronus's memories with me before my brain got fried. He caught me "snooping" through the memory and, after realizing what memory he had left laying around, we talked about it and I understood him better, like I did before the accident. It didn't take long for him to worm his way into my pale quadrant. I wore a sweater instead of that suit. It was yellow with black stripes, but still had the Gemini symbol on it. Other than that, I wore jeans and yellow converse-type shoes. I didn’t wear my helmet unless I was skateboarding. Cronus was my grape and Kurloz was my plum. I think I was their banana or something like that but that just came to me so.

Kankri Vantas - Dream Bubbles - Cronus

I took some time away from others to try and have one of those little “self-discovery” things. I don’t think anyone tried to stop me from leaving, but I remember being very close with Cronus. I don’t remember who it was or what exactly they said, but someone had threatened me, which was my final little push to just go. Everyone was sick of my constant talking, so I went on my own for a while. I had found myself a pretty secluded place that wasn’t too far from a salamander village, but it wasn’t too close, either. Their language was beyond what I could learn and so I had to go off gestures for communication, which helped me realize that I didn’t need to speak so much to talk to someone. I worked mostly on my writings and how I portrayed myself to my peers while separated. My writings shifted from mostly lectures to strictly poetry gradually. Cronus and I used to watch Grease very often before I left. It kind of started to change my usual attire too? I know that I didn’t wear just a straight up sweater or the leggings anymore. I wore dark red jeans and a black/red letterman over a thinner red turtleneck. The lettermen jacket had a red cancer symbol on the logo.

Mallek Adalov - Tegiri & Lanque

Tegiri and I were big nerds for ninja/martial arts type shit. We nerded out at convention type of things and he eventually became my moirail. Lanque started out as my kismesis but at some point we quad jumped and he ended up as my matesprit. He and I spent a lot of time on rooftops overlooking the city and talking about everything. I think that’s when we quad jumped. We moved in together at some point and we couldn’t decide on the color for the walls, so it ended up looking a lot like the dress from Sleeping Beauty. MC’s route with me was the one where they yeeted out of my car so I never really got to know them. Diemen was a close friend, but he shut me out of his more personal life a lot.

for the pendulum reading: unfortunately, i was given a yes to kurloz being bad under the standard of being unkind to you and/or friends.

tarot: of course!!! i’m using the astrological spread from barbara moore’s book “tarot spreads: layouts and techniques to empower your readings” found on pages 39-41 in tandem with the homestuck deck.

First House: Self-image, personality, & what you’re driven by

Eight of Swords. This can indicate the feeling of being trapped or powerless, especially close to endings when you feel like there’s nothing to be done. Unfortunately, this indicates a generally negative self-image. You may have seen yourself as stuck close to an ending that you couldn’t have reached by any means. Generally, you were perhaps driven by the idea of resolution, getting the story you started to finish. When it comes to personality, this card can indicate being a person who was often concerned in one way or another.

Second House: Attitudes towards material possessions

Two of Wands. This can indicate contemplating things, possibly for a long time. This means that when it came to things you owned, you were likely protective of them, but knew how to bargain off or what was worth keeping for memories.

Third House: How you communicate & learn; siblings

The Lovers. As a Major Arcana card, this is a very important part of the reading, indicating that communication was an important part of your life. It means general optimism but also love in any form it manifests, romantic or otherwise. You likely communicated to others via actions that were caring, even just little things. You were willing to give those you cared about your full trust, and it’s likely they gave it back in return. King of Wands. This card is associated with the Aries sign, which could indicate closeness with a Megido, but could go any way. Fifth House: Creativity/hobbies, fun, social life

Four of Wands. This can generally indicate communication, but is also a very good card in this house, as it can show ideas manifesting. The first thing that comes to mind is writing - something that’s in the realm of thought (as the Wands suit is based on thought) but takes a long time to develop, and is a way of communicating your feelings, directly or otherwise. Fun could have often been in the form of outings with friends. Socially, this could be an indication of arguing or stormy waters that were eventually resolved by some means.

Sixth House: Responsibilities & relationships

Five of Wands. This likely means you saw all of your friends as your responsibilities. Solving every little problem or squirmish became your problem, and you could have gotten tangled up in the issues of others because you saw it as something you had to take on to be a good friend. With relationships, this shows things taking times. Friends could have put you in the background for a long time only to later realize how dear you are to them, or other relationships could have been halted due to personal stress or things on your mind.

Seventh House: How you interact with others

Temperance. As a Major Arcana card, this is very important to the reading, and also gives clues towards the fact that other people and how you interacted with them was a very key part of yourself. With reference to the Sixth House, we can take this to mean that you often interacted with others in a way that balanced them out. You felt the need to keep the balance and make sure that nobody got out of hand so that nothing bad would happen.

Eighth House: Obligations

The Hanged Man. As a Major Arcana card, this indicates that obligations were important to you. This indicates the idea that there’s nothing to be done. You have to wait, and eventually, enlightenment will come of it. This shows that you felt the things you were obligated towards had to be solved immediately, when in reality, it was more important to step back and see the entire situation, and then make decisions or take actions.

Ninth House: Spirituality & morals

Four of Cups. This indicates being unsatisfied or feeling that there isn’t enough. You could feel unfulfilled, and you want to believe something is out there, but you’re losing hope. Generally, this means that you were not a spiritually active person. You maybe had the drive or the want to believe in some higher power, but found yourself disappointed and doubting the existence of one due to poor experiences. When it comes to morality, this could mean that you had morals that wavered a lot, mostly sticking with what felt right at the time rather than a justice system.

Tenth House: General image you project

Two of Swords. This could indicate indecision. People likely saw you as a person who was never quite sure what they believed in or didn’t know what to do all the time. However, on a different token, you were seen as a supportive friend (though perhaps gave support to others at the cost of your own wellbeing). You were seen as an emotional person, but that isn’t necessarily negative so much as it means that others found you hard to read.

Eleventh House: Friendships & goals

The Empress. As a Major Arcana card, this means friendships and the hopes you hold close to you were important, even if in the Ninth House it shows that the latter could have been let go of several times. Most likely, your friendships are the most important part of this house. This is a positive card as it indicates friendships full of life and support. You knew how to keep a friendship stable and hold onto others while also letting them hold onto you. Despite any other troubles, those who you held dearest knew it, and you (hopefully) were able to know just how much they cared for you too.

Twelfth House: Inner self

Wheel of Fortune. As a Major Arcana card, this shows that who you were inside was a strong foundation of yourself. This makes sense, because with all the chaos of other people, concern, and not knowing what you believe, the person you can always anchor back down to is yourself. This indicates change, typically for the better. However, this change is unforeseen, and can at first be seen as a bad thing. This shows that in the face of adversity, you were often determined to hold onto who you are and try to take some lesson from it.

Overall

This reading has a lot of Wand cards, showing activity in the realm of thought.
