Episode 37 - Ditto and the Copycat Girl
Taking shelter from a rainstorm in the mysterious Mimic House/House of Imite, where they meet a young girl about Ash's age named Imite/Duplica. She's raising the gimmick Pokemon Ditto!
Ash offends Duplica by implying that Ditto doesn't sound like a very good Pokemon and she challenges him to a match. He's right in his assessment; Ditto's Transform gimmick is neat, but having to burn a turn using it while your opponent gets a free move in means you're ultimately always trying to use the same approach your opponent's using but a turn behind.
Sorry, Duplica, but Ditto is always at a disadvantage in every possible encounter by design. Competitively, they're among the worst Pokemon ever. Your opponent pretty much has to be a total clod to lose to them.
This is a fight Ash should easily win. Naturally, that means he loses. Ditto imitates Bulbasaur, then defeats Bulbasaur with their own Vine Whip after Razor Leaf, a move with 95% accuracy, misses. Stupid cheating game.
Follow Duplica's lucky victory, she reveals that she's not actually trying to be a competitive Trainer. Her aspiration is to perform costume shows to entertain passing travelers. However, her Ditto has an unfortunate quirk that prevents them from being able to properly imitate a Pokemon: They can't copy faces.
Then Team Rocket shows up and steals Ditto. They have a plan: If they can get Ditto to impersonate the Dratini from the banned Safari Zone episode, they can defraud Giovanni into thinking they're good at their jobs. (I love these assholes. XD)
But before they do that, Jessie uses Ditto to make a grown-up Deepfake of her first childhood boyfriend out of curiosity. Due to Ditto's quirk, this does not go well.
Team Rocket manages to solve Ditto's problem, fortunately. It turns out, all they needed to be able to Transform fully was some good ol' violent threats and abuse. Heartwarming?
Team Rocket is fended off, of course. But the fruits of their efforts mean Duplica and her Ditto are able to reopen the Mimic House for passing travelers! Some actual net-positive as a result of these hucksters for once!

hello everyone I am here with some Kirby-inspired Digifakes I made with help from @arancia-con-un-coltello. I think I did really good at mimicking the Digimon artstyle!
reference book entries below the readmore
Kabimon~"A Fairy Digimon that's always smiling. It has a sunny disposition, and brings cheer where it goes. It becomes violent when hungry, but will always return to its pleasant demeanor upon eating. Despite its cute appearance, it conceals a devastating strength. Its Special Move, Copy, allows it to catch enemy attacks in its mouth and to fire them back."
Terminamon Core~"A fearsome Demon Digimon that is the true form of Terminamon. Though small, especially in comparison to its projected body, it possesses an unimaginable power of destruction. It is said that should Terminamon ever be released, the universe would come to an end. Its Special Moves include a dark wave that drives creatures to madness (Animosity Void), and a piercing laser that annihilates anything in its path (Ashes to Ashes)."
Waddlemon~"A hardy species of Digimon. They can be found throughout every corner of the Digital World, commonly clustering around strong Digimon. They will gather food for said stronger Digimon in exchange for protection. Its Special Move is Overload Swarm, where the full pack of Waddlemon all rush an enemy at once."
ParaWaddlemon~"A variant species of Waddlemon that took up a weapon. It defends its pack in lieu of a leader. Its Special Move, Parasol Drill, can crack the armor of tough enemies and break down walls to allow the pack to pass through."
Doomon~"A solitary species of Digimon. It's theorized to be related to Waddlemon, but it's uncertain how much truth is in this statement. It does not travel with Waddlemon packs, instead striking off on its own or with other Virus Digimon. Its Special Move is Cycle Beam, where it shoots a blast of light from its eye."
EmperorPenmon~"A Bird Digimon that lives in the frigid tundras of the Digital World. It is a fierce defender of its friends, and is thus a popular choice of ruler for Waddlemon packs. It swings its massive hammer at any who attempt to harm its pack, but is very easy to trick. Its Special Move is bringing its hammer down on the enemy (Royal Payback). This move is particularly effective when EmperorPenmon is enraged."
MaskedPenmon~"A Bird Digimon from the frozen tundra, donning a mask of metal and stone. It forms a hammer with sturdy stones, and then freezes it together with aid from Hexeblaumon. It laughs boisterously as it sends enemies flying with its hammer, but becomes vicious if its allies are harmed. Its Special Move is Rocket Hammer, where it slams its hammer into an enemy with all its strength."
Metamon~"A Warrior Digimon with bladed wings. It is an aerial fighter, who uses its sharp boots and blades to slice enemies. However, it is also honorable, and refrains from dirty tricks and death blows when able to. Its Special Move is a dual slash with its wings, which fire waves of dark energy (Crescent Slash)."
MechaKnightmon~"A Cyborg Digimon that's been modified by an outside source. It loathes its modifications, and sometimes can even be seen attempting to claw them off outside of battle. Despite this, it shows no qualms with taking advantage of these weapons in fights, making it a vicious fighter. Its Special Moves include blasting enemies with its electric arm cannons (Galaxia Beam), and ripping the enemy apart with its blades and claws (Crescent Frenzy)."

trainer tips: spotting ditto and zorua in scarlet and violet
things i've noticed by obsessively examining every wild pokemon in areas with ditto and/or zorua available:
the transformed pokemon generally behave the same- which tends to be unusual for the pokemon they're copying
transformed pokemon tend to be out of place somehow, be it a pineco hopping around on the ground or a sawsbuck by itself
transformed pokemon are docile, so a good indicator is a hostile pokemon who leaves you be. for example, a tauros or primeape who doesn't charge
transformed pokemon are, of course, not the pokemon they appear to be, so they tend to exhibit behaviors that would be odd. see above, but also something like a cyclizar who just walks around instead of going into bike mode
transformed pokemon tend to not be timid, so a dunsparce that doesn't nervously dig away is also a good indication
and finally, my number 1 tip:
hold the ZL button. it will tell you if a pokemon is a ditto or a zorua.
in japanese, ditto is メタモン (metamon) and zorua is ゾロア (zorua) - if anyone else would benefit from this knowledge specifically.
edit to add these, bc they're helpful but i forgot:
pokemon that react to a trainer with ! will always react with ? if transformed
a transformed pokemon posing as sudowoodo will not run away as soon as you get close to it
a transformed pokemon posing as foongus will not do the thing where foongus lets out a cry and thrust the pokeball mushroom top at you. because it is not foongus.
