something I've been thinking about lately. i do think it's incredibly telling that almost 80 percent of the conversations around 'gatekeeping' and 'posers' and shit end up just becoming vitriolic hatred of 'alt girls' like i hate shit spotify playlists and dollskill fake leather edge and tiktok recommendations as much as the next person but this is a very big attitude coming from a website full of people who spent their formative middle school years shopping at hot topic for multi-colored skinny jeans while listening to like. falling in reverse or 21p unironically (this is a self-own btw). first of all teenagers having shit taste isn't killing punk music. but also why is the object of your hatred always boil down to a woman faking it? as if it isn't the single oldest stereotype in heavy music? like am i insane for thinking this is an issue

Top 50 Metal Frontmen + Frontwomen of the 21st Century (by Loudwire)
Tumblr media
32. Tati Shmayluk (Jinjer)
If one was to create the perfect modern metal singer from scratch, the result would be Tati Shmayluk. The Jinjer frontwoman possesses the cleans of a soulful superstar and the growls of a demon queen, and her interchangeable style brings her to the god-tier level of a Mikael Akerfeldt or Devin Townsend. Jinjer have only just begun to scratch the surface of what they’re capable of, and in a few years, Tati will potentially be blowing away massive crowds as a festival headliner.

27. Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation)
Sharon den Adel role in Within Temptation, transcends the term "front woman": "Victorian Goddess" feels like a more apt description for what she does. Her silky, soft and chilling approach to vocals is unique even amongst modern metal sirens. Sharon brings her fans to tears on favorites like “Memories” and “Mother Earth,” all while wearing tiaras and ballroom gowns. Few could pull that off and be taken seriously, but den Adel makes it work.
Tumblr media
22. Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil)
There’s not a wealth of metal coming from Italy, but Lacuna Coil have put "The Boot" on the metal map in the 21st century. Their goth-tinged, rhythm heavy sound hinges on shades of light and dark through a two vocalist setup. Cristina Scabbia, whose angelic voice represents the lighter aspect (though her lyrics have long served as an emotional vessel for pain, grief and sorrow), gives the band a unique attack as their sound can drift into the more atmospheric and ethereal at times or bludgeon with overt heaviness.

16. Tarja Turunen (Nightwish)
Who would have imagined that truly operatic singing would fit so well within the heavy metal landscape? Tarja Turunen’s heavenly pipes offered something entirely new and refreshing for metal, which had largely been devastated by the changing trends of the ‘90s. She and Nightwish led the return to the majestic, fantasy driven roots of the genre with an intriguing new angle. Turunen proved that the singing style could command genuine respect and influence in metal.

11. Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy)
She took the baton from Angela Gossow and ran with it like nobody else could. After a successful career with the Agonist, Alissa White-Gluz leveled up when she joined Arch Enemy, ultimately bringing the band into the most fruitful period of their career. Her clean vocals and gutturals are the cream of the crop, and her power only increases when she hits the stage. She is arguably the greatest female performer of her generation, and one of the all-around best band leaders of the century.

10. Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy)
The 21st century has seen a massive surge of women in metal bands, strengthening and diversifying our beloved genre. The most powerful and influential of these ladies is undoubtedly Angela Gossow, who paved the way for extreme metal frontwomen and gave Arch Enemy their most explosive years. With undeniable stage presence and terrifying gutturals, Angela Gossow is one of the most admired musicians in metal history and her vicious aura may never be replicated.

4. Till Lindemann (Rammstein)
Till Lindemann isn’t just an iconic frontman, he’s an pyromaniac and master of theatrics. Another true original on this list, the Rammstein vocalist makes the German language 10x more fun than singing in English, though he does dabble. Throughout a Rammstein show, Lindemann ensures there’s never a dull moment, whether dropping a Till hammer, wielding a flamethrower or even driving a penismobile while spraying foam on the audience. Lindemann is a consummate entertainer and Rammstein’s act is just as enthralling as it was 20 years ago.

Beste zangers in the Netherlands (and I suppose all other countries who have a program with that format): a decameron-esque organization, YouTube cover artists next to old opera singers next to metal frontwomen, everybody being polite to each others and complimenting the others' talent, people tearing up when hearing a song which means a lot to them being sang by another participant, singers opening up about their personal lives, some lighthearted funny moments like said opera singer performing despacito, duets, the kindest vibe ever
Beste zangers if it was made in italy: the first ten minutes of the episode are the host judging everybody's clothes, someone is insulting the Church, someone sings gli uomini sessuali to the only gay/lesbian participant (given that there is one), malgioglio (or any other similar person) is there, damiano dei maneskin ruins every song he attempts to cover and is also the only "rock musician" present, new artists just go on fake deep rants on how they stand with the outcasts and they come from the road and their generation is more progressive, there are at least three scandals

blah blah female fronted metal is a reductive label we’ve heard charlotte wessels etc complain about it but i always liked it bc it was like. when people say theyre fans of female fronted metal they DO mean that and specifically are communicating that support for women. like i understand how the frontwomen in question might take it poorly but it will always have a special place in my heart bc when i was a kid just getting into music it felt very … not welcoming necessarily but something in the area. anyway. point is i am trying to keep up with women in metal again and i think the real downside of female fronted metal as a label is that it sort of emphasized the vocalist as the prime position for women in metal (which is true in a lot of the, you know, Not Really Metal genres, and kind of relates to all the dumbfuck Not Really Metal tarring and feathering). it isn’t wholly inaccurate (e.g. symphonic metal has a fuckload of women vocalists and very few women on instruments) but like. how about female drummed metal. wheres THAT corner
