Less than 10 minutes before midnight! Woo!

So, today’s prompt was “old money,” and I went with a sort of 20s-inspired design- I think I was thinking of that bit from The Great Gatsby where Daisy’s voice is described as “sounding like money”? Which is a great descriptive detail. Anyway, I went with some J.C. Leyendecker and art deco inspiration for this, and while it ended up being a bit rushed, it was super fun to draw!

Mermay Day 12: Purple Sea Urchin

For such a colorful place, the coral reef makes things so eager to hide. Take the Spiny Bunker for example. Edgar's one of our regular check ins, he's a good indicator of the health of the ecosystem. A beautiful purple shell means a healthy reef. It was kind of terrifying when we first found him. The reef was nearly dead, and he was nearly white. He's much healthier these days, even if he's a bit... difficult to interact with.

MerMay Day 13: Old Money

The Abstract train hit me again. I just didn’t like any of the drafts I made using the old money aesthetic, so I created a mermaid that was quite literally old and rich.

But mostly, I recently watched the Aristocats and was inspired by Madame Adelaide Bonfamille. She was the best!

Mermay Day 13: Mantis Shrimp

If things will not hide in the coral reef, there is a good reason for it, and it should serve as a warning. Tyla caused quite the stir to beach goers and explorers alike, punching holes into whatever ships crossed her territory. Turns out she lost a clutch to a boat several months prior. We roped off her territory, and let her get reacclimated to human's presence. The boaters weren't happy we kept the ropes up long term, and can't say I care too much. But she won't hurt swimmers anymore, and that's what matters.
