Oh man, WAIT, what about some newbie to Camelot not being able to tell Who The Ruler Is because it's canon that Arthur is so much more informal than Uther was, he rarely wears his crown or the royal crest, many of his men call him by name. Gwen wears her lil coronet sometimes, but Morgana also wore little headpieces like that so that's not a solid indicator. Freya and Gwen are both attired like royalty, and Merlin dresses down a little, but not like he used to, the ladies put a stop to that, no rags for the royal consort. Merlin also tells Literal Knights what to do and they listen to him, so yeah, it's a very stressful toss up for any poor chucklefuck who doesn't know what they're walking into

it doesn't make it better when everyone on the staff decide to confuse the newcomers more.

"Say, who is the lady with the lovely flower crown?"

Roland had been polishing her prized battle axe, specially gifted to her from the Queen. She scanned the newbie with an almost charged gaze. They grew uncomfortable with her growing silence. This is the third time a knight or squire has failed to inform them where the royals of this palace are. They had hoped that maybe the sweet woman adorned in a grand crown of wildflowers could be a possible royal, but now they doubted it.

"That's Freya," the squire finally said, looking pleased with the shine reflecting off her weapon. "Most refer to her as the Lady of the Lake."

The what now???

"You wouldn't happen to know where his majesty's quarters are?" the foreign dignitary asked.

"Which majesty?" Bedivere tilted his head.

The dignitary blinked.

"Whi-which...? There's more?!"

Bedivere exchanged a pitying look with Lucan. You would think the other nobles would clue into it by now. Lucan shook his head, exasperated.

"But those are commoner's clothes!"

"Ah, you see," the squire, Dagonet, said with a sigh, "commoner clothing is in now in Camelot."

King Mathias sputtered, his cheeks now giving off a red hue.

"That's right, sire," Gaheris (the other accompanying squire) continued. "Red tunics and baggy trousers are the latest fashion trend. Courtesy of his majesty King Arthur!"

The king would have liked to say he was at a loss for words, but instead Kind Mathias was screaming himself hoarse until the two pesky squires that one of the knights assigned to him left his chambers. The nerves of those two!

"You could have at least made it seem believable," Nathan told the two some moments after with a roll of his eyes.

"Like you would be any help!" Dagonet sniffed. "You would give the ruse away the moment you walked in."

Nathan made sure to shove Dagonet hard. Unfortunately for him, Dagonet retaliated. This went on for some time.

"Strange."

"Something wrong, Arthur?" Gwen stopped her musings on her embroidery and looked to find her husband deep in thought. Oh dear, she sighed internally.

"I received a letter yesterday from on of the lords neighboring Caerleon. It appeared like it was addressed to me...but then it ended with King Merlin."

"Oh?" Gwen's embroidery was forgotten.

"Odd isn't it. I guess the idiot hangs with me so much that others confuse him as royalty rather than me."

Gwen giggled and kissed him on the cheek.

"Maybe that's what it is." The Queen then stood and dusted off her dress. "Now, Freya was just telling me about this lovely field on the outskirts of the citadel. You and Merlin up for it?"

"Sounds wonderful."

And so the two go to meet the other half of their quartet, conversation already forgotten.

S01E10 — The Moment of Truth

Hearing that his village is being threatened by a warlord and his gang, Merlin travels home with Gwen, Morgana and Arthur, the latter doing his best to drill the peaceful villagers into a fighting force. Merlin's friend William is dismissive of Arthur's efforts, feeling they constitute egoism, though he ultimately saves the young prince's life. Nonetheless the villagers are inexperienced in martial ways and Merlin must use magic and conjure up a wind-storm to help see off the bandits.

The fastest way to identify a newbie to Camelot is they

A) think a Queen can't have a mistress (yes she can)

B) think Freya is Arthur's mistress (it's obviously Merlin)

The squires have a tally board in their room to keep track of how many ask which question first. Column A is labeled "Stupid" and Column B is labeled "Blind"

there's another tally board the squires keep hidden from their knights and majesties which is the betting board for what crazy assumption with a new arrival to Camelot make. Gaheris and Andred voted to name it the "Polycule Pool", but were vetoed by Nathan and Lucan (a very rare occurrance, Roland can assure you) when Bedivere (aka Beddy, aka Beds, Beddy Boy, aka Little Gremlin) wanted Bors to explain what the name was referencing.

Bors had trouble functioning then after.

#the polycule pool was 1st ranked 1-10 but as certain dignitaries created more convoluted assumptions the squires made the ranking 1-100 #the squire to win the most in this betting pool was roland #dagonet called it unfair since she was merlin's squire and could use clairvoyance to know the outcome #she called him a sore loser and an idiot because clairvoyance was a high level spell and she was still learning how to control a fireball #(lucan fears for the day when she will finally be competent in the spell; her excited gleam is enough to give him an idea on her intentions #bbc merlin #headcanons #ot4 #merwenthurya #squires of the round table #my beloved <3 #beddy's a little shit and i love him for it #shitpost #asks #Anonymous
