Speaking of Rakusan’en, though. They recently released this new souvenir card for Rakusan’en, featuring Nagano Tsuyoshi’s Nobunaga artwork and some fancy gold foil lettering.

These souvenir cards are called Gojou’in 御城印, which are commemorative cards that you can buy at various castles in Japan. Castles usually would have a booth with a stamp of the castle’s site, and you can stamp on pamphlets or your personal journals as "proof” that you visited the place. These cards are intended to be stamped with those castle stamps, to keep as extra special memorabilia of your visit. 

Rakusan’en is just the garden, but it seems that the residential mansion that was attached to the garden is actually Obata Castle. Since Obata Castle no longer exist, they offer cards for both Rakusan’en and Obata Castle that applies to the same site. I didn’t realise this at first because there are other Obata Castles in other places, and I’d gotten slightly confused before.

I’m not sure why the office didn’t just commission Nagano-sensei to draw the proper lords of the domain, but maybe Nobunaga is just more recognisable and therefore more attractive to customers. Though Nobukatsu is ostensibly the first lord of the domain entering the Edo period, he doesn’t seem to be distinguished as an independent lord of his own right by the city. All the Oda lords are collectively remembered as “Nobunaga’s bloodline”.

（Edit: Just to avoid being misleading, I meant “first” lord of the restructured/reorganised domains, that is, in the Edo period. Naturally, before the Oda were assigned here, this area was governed by different families. The city claims that the Oda were the ones who revitalised the area, so all the fanfare is about them, and Nobunaga is a very well-known name besides. I’m not sure if there’s much talk about the clans that lived there prior to them.）

The "castle stamp” is not even some unique design either. Instead of a special design that says either Obata Castle or Rakusan’en, it’s literally just the Tenka Fubu seal. Example of a stamped card being sold in the Mercari reseller site:

Got this in today, and while the art of course is wonderful, the story is disappointing. This story intensely focused on the separation and as opposed to family being together on holidays, split that idea further.

Hate saying I cannot recommend it.

Once upon a time, I was the FIRST person to loudly complain about Christmas merchandise going up in stores early. It used to drive me NUTS to see lights and trees on the store shelves when it was still September or October. (And even a few times in AUGUST)  That said, I started to realize that Halloween stuff is now being marketed and pushed in the exact same fashion, coming out in stores in the middle of Summer, and that it's pretty much the same thing. The only REAL difference was that I was super HAPPY about seeing that stuff so early.  As such, I decided that it was maybe a WEE hypocritical for me to shit on those who get excited for trees and tinsel as WE do seeing skulls and pumpkins. I suspect most folks reading this, however, will be on Heidi's side in this strip. lol

Got to escape to a big city for a fun weekend with a friend. Happened to go into a game shop, and I got tempted into buying the Good Omens game!

I'm not a game player (outside of like, Jenga or Yahtzee, stuff like that) so I really only got it to "support the cause" of officially licensed merchandise. If we don't buy it, they won't make more stuff. However, the green velvet bag was worth the purchase price, it's nicely embroidered!

Cedric The Sorcerer printable stickers 💫🐦‍⬛

I made a sticker sheet to print with Cedric's illustrations and stickers from other books and merchandize to use in my sketchbook. Some of those stickers are ultra rare, so it's almost impossible to have them if you're not from USA or Japan (and even in these countries, some of the items are unavailable and they aren't even produced anymore). Have fun!

I added some extra stuff because I was already out of official material and I'm not having enough magic/sorcerer/whimsigoth stickers either to make more pages about him in my sketchbook, so since it's the same theme I think you won't mind!

I think part of what I appreciate about Mr. J the cat is that while on some level it might just be another "cat influencer" account, landlady isn't doing like Monetize Your Cat era weirdness. R-slur Grumpy Cat is still on random merch in random gift shops despite dying in 2019. Bub was hauled around the US for years into old age for weird photo ops. Stray cat J is just a guy, in a house, who is a cat.

#I dont think 'monetize your cat' is an accepted historical era to anybody but me #because it appears to have just been some random tumblr user's URL #but to me it was like the entire 2010s where people merchandized their lightly disabled cats HEAVILY and it was very weird #but yeah i guess the point is that landlady isnt trying to be like an 'internet personality' shes just a woman having fun w a blog #despite how people try to engage her with like. weird discourse and shit. let her post cat pics in peace....

Something about the lack of good (official) Ed Edd n Eddy merch is so entertaining. I mean ofc there are shirts and pins and the video games. Stuff like that. But something about the merch from the original run of the show is so amusing. You could just tell these executives were being driven to madness trying to figure out a way to market these ugly children outside of just the show, and their failure to do so adequately makes it all the funnier.
