Here's the Sanders Sides "Giant merman" au story, promised long ago. Told in a bullet list just to get it out. The first 2 parts for now!
Next Part
CW: while everything is kept very brief the story does mention abandonment, injury, person being called monster and mention of self-neglect. And death mention.
Part 1
It begins with Logan picking up Patton and Roman outside a café, Patton’s workplace. They drive a bumpy road to a secluded beach, where Virgil waits in the shallows to meet the other two for the first time (Virgil and Logan already know eachother for a few months). It doesn’t go very well, with Roman fainting.
They decide to meet again in a week, after Virgil gets some reassurance from Logan. (And Roman gets chewed out by Logan as he referred to the mer as a monster. He’s just scared for himself and the others mkay)
Roman joins because he wants to make sure his friends are safe as he doesn’t trust the giant yet. It takes a while for both parties to become used to each other. Virgil warms up faster to Patton, because the man is accepting from the start.
The trio visits the beach every Sunday to hang out with the mer, talking, playing music etc.
The humans have their growing suspicions that Virgil has been raised by humans. Or at least spent time around them before, despite how the mer refuses to talk about his childhood. Virgil happily recognizing a children’s book (one that Roman grew up with) was one of the hints.
Over time Logan notices how Virgil becomes more unfocused. Tired. Easily agitated. The mer is quick to brush off his concerns; he’s fine.
Meanwhile the humans are being shadowed by strange figures. One keep appearing at Patton’s work, asking odd questions about cryptids. About mermaids. What would he do if he met one? Patton just nervously brush them off.
One day Logan is approached by a man while at work. The man asks him out to have a chat. Logan declines: he can’t go on dates while at work (obviously), but the man insists and shows him a photo of the trio with Virgil. Uh oh.
The pair walk along the harbor (Logan asked a colleague to fill in for him dw) The man introduces himself as Janus.
Part 2
Janus works for a large MedTech company, owned by his father.
He tells him of how they almost 20 years ago, funded a researcher. Que flashback.
She was developing artificial wombs, on paper.
While she was improving the device, sending successful data to the company to ensure fundings, she was also creating genetically altered humans in the likeness of mermaids on the side.
She just wanted to see if she could.
And she did. On the 22nd try.
Happy that the subject survived, she also quickly realized that when he exited the artificial womb, he needed to be cared for just like a human infant.
The next five years the researcher became a mother figure to the “mer”. It was obvious on the recordings of the two interacting. She hid his existence well. But that was before his growth really kicked in.
The subject, which she had named Virgil, was quickly outgrowing the tank in her research facility. Conscience kicking in, she recognized that she probably shouldn’t have run the experiments in the first place and the data could be dangerous in the wrong hands, she deleted all files about the creation of Virgil. Keeping only his physical files, and footage of him growing up because d’aw.
Hiring a large van that accommodated the mer, she had him crawl into the back and drove to the sea where she left him. Promising him that she’d return. She never did.
While driving, she attempted to call the company, and lost control of the van and crashed. Killing her.
Virgil never knew of her fate, he waited for over a week until realizing that she wasn’t coming back; he’d been abandoned.
It took the company a while to find the files with Virgil in them. (They only looked for files regarding the artificial womb after all). But when they did find them and went through the records, they found out they had a genetically engineered creature on the loose.
Instead of ignoring the matter, they wanted to take responsibility for the creature. (Also, because how is he even alive?!)
The MedTech company committed a secret team trying to locate the mer ever since, which Janus is part of. End flashback.
They’ve always been one step behind with how much he’s been migrating. Avoiding their ships when they get too close.
Thanks to Logan and his friends, he’s finally been tracked down.

Expected Rating: Mature
Warnings: Main Character Death, Kidnapping, Violence, on screen death, body mutilation
Characters: Patton, Virgil, Roman, Remus, Janus, OC Child
Romantic Relationships: Prinxiety, Demus, Logicality (past)
Summary: The day Logan died, Patton did too. Not in a physical sense, but in every way that mattered.
Five years down the line, Virgil thought he was over the loss of his two best friends but he's still seeing Patton in the shadows. What's worse is that his husband, the mer king, has also gone missing. Virgil can't lose any more people, he refuses to lose any more.
Patton will be morally grey ish in this and I know that's a deal breaker for some people.

Chapter 1
Masterpost - ao3 - next chapter
no warnings i can think of for the first chapter, so i hope you all enjoy!
From the outside, the building looked normal. An office building with a boring grey exterior that you could find in any city. If you didn't know the true purpose of the building, it would continue to look normal in the interior as well. An entranceway with a receptionist's desk and elevator, and floors and floors of cubicles and meeting rooms. Completely ordinary.
The contrary, however, could be said for those who knew the truth.
If you were one of the few trusted, you were given a passcode. Punch that into the elevator, and instead of travelling up to the office spaces, you would travel down, to the true purpose of the building.
The headquarters for The Sanders Society.
The underground headquarters is a mirror of the prop office. Offices and meeting rooms, with employees on computers and talking with one another. There's even a break room fully equipped with coffee and snacks. At first glance, everything would seem average, making one question why there was so much secrecy.
That is until you notice who is in this building. Besides humans, it's common to see aliens, ghosts and ghouls, fae, and all sorts of supernatural creatures. You see, that is the point of The Sanders Society. They deal with what governments don't want the general population to discover. All the supernatural sightings, kidnappings, and anything that could be pinned on "abductions", were investigated and stopped by the team.
Thomas Sanders was the head of the facility, and he accepted only the best for his select team. Field agents were required to pass extensive physical and psychological training, while medics needed to have the best medical training possible. Researchers specializing in the supernatural were valued as well, collecting information for those going into the field. While all members of the TSS were valued greatly, there were a few at the organization that Thomas secretly favoured.
Roman Prince, field agent. The man was known for his bravery and skill in combat. Always the first to jump into a battle, and the first to protect those he cared about. He joined the agency when his brother, Remus, went missing. Remus had apparently been interested in supernatural beings, so Roman joined both out of memory for his brother, and the slim chance that Remus was out there somewhere.
His partner, Logan Croft, field agent and part-time researcher. While his counterpart was known for his physical skills, Logan was known for his intelligence. The two contrasted each other nicely, though their partnership was rocky at first. Logan was considered one of the best, both at fieldwork and research. He had contributed to many projects and assignments and was highly respected at the agency.
Patton Hart, medic. The oldest of a large family, he had always been a caretaker. This carried into his career, where he topped his class in medical school, before being recruited to the TSS. He treats his coworkers like his children, telling dad jokes and giving out cookies.
The three of them were incredibly close, and it showed in their work. At the tops of their fields, they were able to help with whatever case was thrown their way.
All that was tested. One case. One mistake. And it nearly ripped them apart forever.
-
Logan sat at his desk, typing frantically on a computer. Roman had been pulled to assist another team's mission, leaving Logan to do the filing for their current case on his own. It hadn't been anything difficult, just assisting some mer-creatures after a storm. Patton had been able to come with the pair, which was always a treat, and the three worked quite well together, giving the creatures the care they needed. But, work like that required lots of paperwork to be done, and being from the medical faction of the agency, Patton had different paperwork to fill out, so Logan couldn't ask him for help either.
Logan glanced up from his computer to look around the office space, hoping Roman had returned. While he couldn't see his partner, he could see other teams filling out papers, filling up coffee mugs, and chatting about their weekends. Logan had been working at TSS for years, but he was always too much of an introvert to really get to know the other agents. Roman and Patton on the other hand, were social butterflies who loved making new friends, and coworkers were no exception.
While scanning the office, however, Logan did find a familiar face. Patton met his eye, before grinning happily. Logan could see the medic begin to maneuver his way through the agency members and towards where Logan was. Logan smiled back slightly at the other man once he reached his desk. Patton's energy was infectious, everyone was slightly more perky around him.
"Hey, Lo!" He exclaimed.
"Salutations, Patton. How have your reports been going?"
The man smiled brighter if that was even possible.
"Just finished, actually! It took forever, but at least they're done. What about you, kiddo?"
Logan grimaced slightly at the nickname but continued speaking.
"Still working on them, I'm afraid. It's taking much longer without Roman here."
"Oh yeah, I'm sure you two are incredibly productive together." Patton winked suggestively.
"Who is teaching you these things?" Logan could feel himself groan.
Before the dad figure could respond, a secretary from one of the department heads interrupted.
"Very sorry to interrupt, Mr. Hart, but Mrs. Roth wants to see you in her office immediately.
Patton tried (not well) to hide a nervous gulp, before turning to Logan and giving a quick goodbye, before following after the secretary.
Logan frowned slightly as he watched his friend's retreating figure, before turning back to his computer. Whatever the department head wanted, Patton would tell him when he came back. But, these forms weren't going to finish themselves.
After completing the work required of him, Logan glanced up from his desk and saw Patton leaving the department head's office. He couldn't be sure, but Logan thought he saw tear tracks running down the medics' face, and he felt concern run through him, worried about his friend. What possibly could have happened to make Patton so upset? While the medic was much more emotionally inclined than Logan, he generally kept a professional air around him while at work, it was uncommon to see him express his emotions like this in a work setting. Something really bad must have happened, and Logan could feel dread pooling in his gut like a serpent.
As he got out of his seat to go check on his friend, Logan heard a commotion at the agency's entrance. He, as well as most of The Sanders Society’s staff, turned towards the front doors. He could see a small crowd of people maneuvering a single person to a chair, someone calling for a medic. Logan saw Patton rush past him, a few other medics joining him. Logan moved closer, curiosity pushing him to see what was wrong. He tried his best to stay out of their ways, but the moment he saw who was sitting in the chair with medics attending to them, that goal went straight out of his mind.
"Roman!"
His partner looked up at the shout, smiling slightly when he met Logan's panicked eyes.
"Hey, Specs."
The injured man spoke quietly, so much so that Logan had to move closer to even hear him. Up close, Logan could see the cloud of pain in Roman's eyes, that he was trying to hide away for the sake of his own pride.
"What happened?"
Roman grinned slightly, this time feeling more genuine.
"Mission didn't go quite as planned. When we were running from the banshee I tripped on a tree root. Team medic said it's some sort of fracture." Roman explained, wincing slightly in discomfort as a medic examined his leg.
Logan cringed at the injury. "I'm sorry, Roman, that sounds like it hurts. You've been given pain medication, correct?"
At Roman's nod, Logan looked and felt relieved. Roman would be okay. "Good. Go with medical, I will see you once you have a cast and any other necessities. Got it?"
Roman nodded, his face breaking into a large smile.
"You got it, calculator watch."
-
They ran along a darkened hallway, being dragged faster than they were able to keep up. They tripped over their feet, still weak from the experiments. They could feel their collar being jerked up, keeping them from dragging everyone else to the group with them. They arrived at their destination, getting a small moment of reprieve while the door was unlocked.
They were shoved back into the darkness of their cell, the barred door clanging shut. Their body ached down to their bones, with deep exhaustion that wouldn't go away with just a short nap. They collapsed to the ground, strength leaving them, before hearing a quiet voice from the cell next door.
"How bad was it this time?"
They mustered enough strength in their body to manage a short response.
"Bad. I can't- I can't-"
Another voice replied to their hushed conversation.
"Hey, breathe. It's not ideal, but we'll survive. We have to."
They nodded, knowing the other two couldn't see them. They slowly clamoured off the floor, a new strength rising up. The strength that came from the need to survive, the strength needed to endure truly horrible situations.
They knew they needed to escape. This place would kill them sooner or later, and they couldn't do that to the others, to the cellmates they called friends, to the family they hoped was still searching for them.
They wanted to do more than survive this place, they wanted to live away from it.
And with that thought, Virgil smiled.

Continuation of the Sanders Sides "Giant merman" au story.
CW: while everything is kept very brief the story does mention abandonment, injury, person being called monster and mention of self-neglect. And death mention.
Part 3
Janus makes an offer to help with Virgil. But they must remove Virgil from the island and to the mainland where the company have a remodeled harbor, specifically tailored for Virgil. And he’d like Logan (and his friends) help to convince the mer to go there. Logan needs to think about it.
On his way back, Logan overhears the island’s fishermen talk. Their nets are being torn. The seal populations at the northern island have just vanished along with many populations at the mainland. The surrounding kelp forests are nearly halved in size. Old man Joe saw a huge shadow in the water just this morning. Speculations are running wild as to what it is.
The lethargy, irritation… Realizing that Virgil’s not doing very well and he’s negatively affecting the surroundings, he makes up his mind. He messages Janus, letting him know that he’ll talk with the mer on the condition that they can still see him. Janus agrees.
On the following Sunday, it’s only Logan and Patton that goes to the beach (Roman had to work but was informed of the plan and all).
Virgil looks more tired than ever now that Logan properly looks at him. He gently talks about the plan with Janus and the harbor. But Virgil stubbornly refuses thinking he won’t be able to see the three anymore! Logan keeps pushing, the situation is unsustainable. Virgil can’t keep himself properly fed in the small area, he appears to not be sleeping very well and he's causing damage to the ecosystem. A few poor choices of words from Logan and a sleep deprived mind, leads Virgil to think that Logan won’t come to the beach anymore. That he’s being abandoned once again. Heartbroken, he drags himself off the beach, unable to process anything Logan or Patton calls after him.
Virgil swims far, drowning in emotional turmoil and old memories.
Logan and Patton wait for hours on the beach. But the mer doesn’t return.
Crestfallen they go home, telling only Roman of the outcome. They don’t know how Janus, or the company, will take it. Instead, they decide to wait until Virgil’s calmed down and they can try again.
Virgil is unable to sleep that night, making him even more miserable. Following night, a ship passes by overhead. The loud engine proves too much and he snaps, attacking it.

“Whoever said you were allowed to build this place across the valley from me-”
“That someone was you-”
“Is an absolute fiend,” The witch finished their sentence. Janus leaned forward into their doorway as Virgil smirked back at them, “You know when I agreed to give your mer-boyfriends the potions to give them legs, I did not agree to be tormented every day for the foreseeable future.”
“Ah but you’re just so easy to torment!” Virgil snickered, teleporting so that he was behind Janus and snagging the hat off of their head. The witch spun around, looking practically violated.
“You are horrible and I wish I had never had the displeasure of meeting you or any of your silly troop,” they grumbled.
“Awe, love you too Jan,” Virgil grinned, jamming the hat onto his own head and sticking his tongue out at the witch.
“My dark and stormy knight!” Virgil heard Roman basically scream from somewhere along the cliff, though he was very quickly closing the distance between them, “I require saving!”
Virgil had to teleport again to catch Roman (he was really really glad that Janus had helped him gain more control of his magic, even if he did mostly use it for pranks now) as he did one of those stupid trust falls he seemed to enjoy doing so much. As soon as he had caught Roman he teleported them out of Remus’ way onto the top of their half built attic, where they were planning to find a way to make an observatory for Logan. Despite this, Remus had decided that not slowing down when Virgil had appeared was the best course of action in such a situation. Their teleport had left Remus to barrel into Janus instead and Virgil couldn’t help but cackle as Janus was knocked off of his feet.
“What in all the high seas is causing such a cacophony as I’m attempting to read,” Logan sighed from nearby, though he didn’t seem annoyed at them, just fond. Virgil kissed Roman on the cheek before setting him down on his feet.
“My dearest apologies, starlight,” Roman said with a bow, “My brother was attempting to perform fratricide again.”
“Ah, I see, well I’m glad that Virgil was able to save you in time,” Logan said with half a smile, “Though I don’t believe it to be wise for you to leave our apparent guests unattended for too long, I don’t wish for Remus to destroy the kitchen for the fifth time since it was built.”
“I’ll go check on the kitchen,” Virgil said with a smile and a roll of his eyes as he made his way to the stairs. Patton turned and waved from the kitchen when he arrived, where- from the smell- it could be guessed that he was baking some kind of fruit pie. It had turned out that after Roman had taken the time to teach Patton how to use the ovens that the mer was an extremely talented baker. Unfortunately though, that skill didn’t extend to cooking.
Remus had sprawled himself over the back of one of their sofas like a disgruntled cat while Janus leaned on the doorway, barely concealed pout on their face. Virgil made his way immediately over to the witch when he saw that Remus wasn’t causing any immediate issues.
“Here, Snakeface,” Virgil huffed fondly, handing back the hat he had stolen, Janus snatched it back with all the ferocity of a toddler pretending to be mad and plonked it back on their head. The witch took a moment to rearrange the ribbons before sending Virgil a barely potent glare.
When they had arrived back at the coast Janus had allowed him, Roman and Patton to stay with him during the short time it took Logan to return to their kingdom to relay the messages from the meeting to their king before getting permission to return to land. It had been a tedious process that had taken much longer than any of them would have liked. In the time it had taken for Logan to return from the sea, Virgil and Janus had developed an odd kind of brotherly relationship all while Patton- very slowly- got more comfortable around Remus.
And of course Roman was ecstatic to see his brother again. Virgil was pretty sure he had kept his brother in a tight embrace for the best of two hours, which might’ve been the longest he’d ever seen Roman stay still, let alone Remus. Janus had commented that he’d never seen Remus stay still for two minutes- let alone two hours.
Logan had returned a month later with permission to stay on the land provided that they made the journey for the meetings every summer to avoid any other mers from their kingdom having to travel across land. And the group had agreed- to Janus’ dismay and Remus’ delight- to begin to build a tower-like house for the four of them on the other side of the headland to the pair so they were always within easy distance to annoy them both.
“Hey Pattoncake!” Roman called, taking the stairs two at a time, “How’s the pie coming?”
“It’s going great!” Patton smiled back, turning to face Roman, “It’s almost done, so you can start preparing dinner if you need the space?”
“That’s wonderful, my dear,” Roman said, leaning down to kiss Patton’s forehead all while he searched for something in one of their cupboards, Patton went red, as he always did, “Virge, dearest, do you think you could gather some thyme and rosemary from the garden?”
“Are you two going to be staying for dinner?” Virgil asked Janus as he slipped out of the front door and made his way around their house to the large gardens that Roman and Logan had spent hours painstakingly setting up. They had been growing everything from flowers to vegetables and it had already come incredibly handy in the time they had been living here- it simply meant they didn’t have to go to the nearest town for groceries every week.
“Aren’t your weirdo family coming over tonight?” Janus asked, leaning against the wall.
“Yes,” Virgil answered as he plucked a handful of thyme from the carefully contained plant and moved onto the rosemary, “Kai and Talyn are coming over for dinner today, as they do every Sunday, you’re still both welcome to stay as well.”
“Are you certain eight of us will fit into your kitchen?” Janus asked, raising an eyebrow. Virgil groaned.
“If I say eight of you will fit in my kitchen, eight of you will fit in my kitchen,”
“Alright alright if you say so,” Janus raised their hands, in a mock surrender, “We’ll stay for dinner, that is, as long as Kai agrees to at least attempt to go five minutes without insulting me.”
Virgil couldn’t help but snort, “I doubt it, that’s just their personality.”
“Well I would’ve thought they’d show me a little more gratitude, considering I did help to break them out of prison.”
“They do show you gratitude, you ass,” Virgil rolled his eyes as he stood up and made his way back to the door, “Talyn literally brings you those lemon cakes you like so much every week they come, and Kai always brings you those sea glass bracelets-”
“Yes, I have more of those than I know what to do with at this point,” Janus said, rolling their eyes in a way that Virgil hoped was fond (Janus better hope so too, because if it wasn’t Virgil would not hesitate to smack the little snake) “Ask them to bring me some kind of variety, will you?”
“Ask them yourself,” Virgil said, elbowing Janus before jogging back into the kitchen and handing the herbs over to Roman. Talyn and Kai- alongside a whole host of other magic folk- had been broken out of the city prison not long after Logan had returned from the sea by a group of six mysterious bandits (or at least that’s what the city called them, Virgil knew exactly who had broken them out because he’d been there, he wouldn’t have had it any other way). Kai and Talyn had opted to set up a small village consisting only of magic folk a further ways down the coast from Janus’ tower and the pair had began to fufil the old dream that they had almost given up on of creating a safe haven for magic folk from the kingdom. They still one day hoped to overthrow the king, but that was a goal for the future, they had other things to focus on right now.
It didn’t stop them from coming down to join them for dinner every Sunday. Neither did anything stop them from bringing a wagon load of gifts ranging from jewellery to magical items to food to “a cool piece of bark one of the fae found and insisted we brought for you” from the village as a thank you from its people. Virgil and the others appreciated the gifts, really, but they were already running out of room to display everything they had been gifted in their house.
“Hey Virgil! Do you mind grabbing me a mat?” Patton called as he brought his pie out of the oven. Virgil darted to grab one of the ceramic mats they used so that the wooden counters wouldn’t get burned when a hot pan was placed down from the cupboard and placed it down on the counter, “Thank you, sunshine!”
“He’s hardly sunshine,” Janus said from across the room with a snort, “That is a horribly inaccurate nickname.”
“Yeah? Well he’s like sunshine to me,” Patton said with a pout aimed at Janus, before pulling Virgil into a side hug.
“Nothing about me even slightly resembles sunshine.”
“Not even your sunny disposition?” Logan said from the staircase, his voice dripping with sarcasm, he’d definitely gotten better at that, “Or perhaps your consistently dark clothing.”
“It could be the moonlight-pale skin!” Roman added, “Or the midnight purple in his hair.”
“Maybe it’s ‘cuz he’s so hot that he has two fish and my dumbass brother fawning over him all the fuckin’ time!” Remus called from the couch.
“Language, and also I can’t tell if that was supposed to be mean or not,” Patton said walking over to the couch to look down at Remus, “But if it was supposed to be mean I’m gonna be putting cabbage in your bread for the foreseeable future.”
“How dare you threaten me with such atrocities!” Remus cried in a way that was much too reminiscent of Roman, “I’ll throw you off the cliff, fish boy!”
“Ok ok, no-one is throwing anyone off of cliffs,” Janus cut in smoothly, “Remus, apologise.”
“He threatened me first,” Remus said, glaring at Patton over the back of the sofa. Patton stuck his tongue out and turned back to the kitchen to begin helping Roman with whatever dinner he had chosen to prepare.
“Are Janus and Remus staying for dinner as well?” Logan asked as he placed his book back into the bookshelf.
Virgil hummed an affirmative and Logan nodded before collecting sets of cutlery from a draw and beginning to set the table. He managed to cram eight places onto their relatively small dining table, and Virgil sent a smirk in Janus’ direction.
As Logan was placing the last of the forks on the table though, he stopped and looked around, before smiling softly and turning to the others.
“They’re here,” Logan announced, “I hear them coming.”
Talyn had barely gotten down from the driving seat of the wagon Virgil had given them back after breaking them out before Virgil had pulled them into a tight hug, Despite seeing them both every week Virgil didn’t think he would ever get used to being apart from them for long, especially after they’d lived together for almost all of their time on this earth.
Roman greeted Kai with a fist bump which turned into a half hug and a fond ‘salad boy’ comment before Virgil let go of Talyn and helped to untie Thomas the horse from the cart. Patton had immediately hurried out to say hello to the horse before sheepishly greeting Talyn and Kai after being reminded that yes, they were here too.
“Janus and Remus are staying for dinner too,” Virgil told them as Patton happily chatted away to Kai about everything and anything, “I hope you don’t mind.”
“Of course not,” Talyn said with a smile, before batting Virgil’s arm, “Your friends are my friends, unless they’re jerks, then I’ll beat them up.”
“Hopefully they don’t qualify as jerks then,” Virgil smiled.
“Definitely not,” Talyn rolled their eyes, “Remus bit the guy who was guarding my cell in the prison, how could I ever think anyone was a jerk after being so valiantly rescued, heck I like him more than your salad boyfriend.”
Virgil couldn’t help the burst of laughter that escaped him at Talyn’s half joking tone, “And- and Janus?”
“Oh yeah they are a jerk,” Talyn said, rolling their eyes as the pair followed the others into the house, “But I can tolerate them for everyone else’s sake.”
“Thank goodness for that, I’m tolerable,” Janus said, Virgil could feel the eye roll from across the room.
“You try your hardest not to be and everyone knows it,” Talyn said, walking over and smacking Janus’ hat so it covered their entire face, earning Talyn a disgruntled yell and blind slapping in their general direction.
“You-” Janus started with a glare as they attempted to right the hat, “You are a menace to all society.”
“Like you’re any better,” Talyn rolled their eyes before shoving Janus and walking over to Logan to start up another conversation. The witch looked like they’d just been handed the worst insult you could think of tenfold.
—-
The eight of them sat around the dinner table, eating the food that Roman had prepared. Patton and Talyn fired puns and back forth whilst Logan looked as though he could barely hold back from face planting into his plate. Roman was laughing as Remus added rude comments every now and again that broke up the flow because Patton had to yell something about language before going back to his train of thought and Janus and Kai watched them all with fond smiles whilst they thought no–one was looking at them.
With all of this, Virgil thought it was pretty obvious that he really didn’t regret going on the adventure three years ago.
No, he didn’t regret it one bit.

“Dad! Dad, I’m going to the beach!” Virgil yelled up the stairs. Today was Wednesday, and that means that his friend would be their! He had to go see him! “Alright Virgil, just be back before dark!” Virgil’s dad yelled back as he walked towards the stairs. “Ok! I will!” Virgil said, rushing off before his dad could question him. “Oh, and Virgil?” Dang it. Virgil turned around, and caught a glimmer of mischief twinkling in his dads heterochromatic eyes. “Tell him I said hi, will you?”
Virgil sputtered, and his dad was heard cackling even after he rushed out the door. How his dad found out, he has no idea, but he couldn’t worry about that right now. He had to get to the beach!
It was a private beach, so there was no one around. Well, no one except Virgil’s friend that is. He was swimming back and forth along the shore, occasionally looking at the beach, searching for some one. Searching for Virgil.
“Hey Patton!” Virgil called, giving his signature 2 finger solute. Patton squealed upon seeing him, and quickly swam up next to where Virgil had sat down.
“Hey Virgil! I almost thought that you wouldn’t come today.” Patton said, kind of sadly. Then he brightened up.
“But you did and now you are here!” “Yep!” Virgil said, happy to finally see his friend again. “By the way, my dad says hi. I don’t know how he knew that I was coming to see you, but apparently he’s ok with it.” Virgil shrugged.
Patton lit up. “Well, tell him I said hi back!” Virgil nodded, then looked back out over the sea. “It’s peaceful here. With you.” Virgil said. Patton looked over at Virgil and smiled.
“I think it’s peaceful here with you too. I love my life under the sea, but I love my time with you a little bit more!”
Virgil looked at Patton and blushed. He was pretty sure he was in love with his mermaid best friend. Of course, he has loved Patton ever since he first meet him, but he knows that his feelings for his mermaid friend have gotten deeper. Stronger.
Virgil looked at Patton, who was watching Virgil. Virgil took a deep breath, and then started speaking. “Patton, I... I think I love you. And not just as a best friend, but as my dad loves Papa. I understand if you don’t feel the same, but I had to let you know. I wish there was a way we could be together, or at least see eachother more.”
Virgil looked back over the water, carefully avoiding Patton’s gaze. Patton was smiling at Virgil, and surged forward, giving Virgil a short, sweet kiss.
Virgil looked at Patton for all of 5 seconds after the kiss, and then his mind was made up. He grabbed Patton out of the water and started walking home. Patton stuttered for a minute, flushing from the fact that Virgil is caring him.
“Virgil? Stormcloud, what are you doing?” Virgil smiled, and kissed the top of Patton’s head. “I’m taking you to my house. That way, we can spend more time together! I can put you in my bathtub or swimming pool, we can have a sleepover, and then I guess I can maybe bring you back tomorrow.”
Patton giggled at Virgil, and hugged him tighter. Patton trusted Virgil. Virgil walked into his home, and looked at his Papa, who was standing in the hallway, sipping Starbucks. Papa immediately started chocking on his Starbucks when he saw his son carrying a mermaid into his house. Virgil’s dad had came to see what was wrong with his husband, and immediately started laughing upon seeing Virgil.
“I told you this would happen Dee!” Papa shouted at Dad once he had finished chocking. “You owe me 20 bucks!”
“Fine, fine, you were right.” Dad said, handing his husband a 20 dollar bill. Both men then turned to look at their child, who was still standing in the hallway, holding a mermaid. Both boys looked confused.
“Virgil, honey, what are you doing?” Virgil looked down at Patton, smiled, then looked back at his fathers. “Patton and I are having a sleep over! He will be staying in my bathtub. Also, he is now my boyfriend!”
Both men looked at eachother again, then they looked back at the pair. “Hi! I’m Patton! Nice to meet you. I love your son very much, thank you for raising him!”
Dad started laughing again, and then Papa turned on him. “Virgil is your child. 100% yours. I can’t believe this. ‘Greeting Dad, Papa. I have just kidnapped a royal mermaid. He will be staying in my bathtub. Oh, and by the way, we’re dating!” Dad just laughed harder as Papa started laughing as well.
Virgil was sitting on the floor, watching both of his parents laugh while Patton sat in his lap and played with his hair.
Dad pointed this out to Papa. “They remind you of anyone? Particularly someone we knew when we were younger?” Papa watched as his son smiled at the mermaid in his lap, and kissed him lightly. Patton giggled.
“Yeah,” Papa said. “They remind me of us.” He looked at his husband, and shoved him.
“Now come on. Let’s got tell our son why he can not keep a royal mermaid in his bathtub.”
