Dramatics

I was writing in my diary about how my love for him is like being stuck in purgatory and how each day could either be heaven or hell. I’m stuck waiting for something to bring me out. The point at which either place sounds better than what purgatory feels like. Even Persephone learned to find some beauty in hell. Or so the myth says.

Anyway, the analogy was going swimmingly until a wave of sadness hit me. So I found myself on my laptop because my thoughts were moving faster than I could write. And all I can believe now is that I should give up. I want to believe that he’ll remember the small stuff and that my little faith in him is just a projection of my trust issues. But I was always told to trust my body. Eat when you’re hungry and don’t when you’re not. Listen to your body. If your stomach growls, eat and if it doesn’t don’t partake in vices. So what if my body is telling me that of course he wouldn’t remember the minutiae? My body tells me that I would be an idiot to expect that. It tells me that I’m too ambitious. And she sounds like him too. Like when he tells me my rose-colored perception of romance is unrealistic and harmful. I’ve been fed lies from the media of my childhood and now it would be cruel of me to wish for something better than a man. And yet I need that. I could settle for a man who compliments me on his good days and humbles me on the bad ones. I could live through that but I would not be alive. I would not be the breathing version of myself that needs poetry and orange trees and the fear of falling. I could be in purgatory forever and convince myself that the room isn’t slowly being consumed by flames. It even sounds romantic to burn slowly in the smoke clouds of my own delusions.

The thing that stops me is my brain, my beautiful brain. She fights for me everyday and tells me that my body knows nothing, that I can keep my dreams, that they should be bigger. In my brain I can picture him, giving me half of his clementine. In my brain, he sends me chapters from his favorite books. He loves my annotations. I love his. It makes me laugh how different they look on the same page. I love us and how we walk downtown with the same pulse. But when I picture him in daydreams, it’s not my partner that I see. That’s what shatters my reality. It’s something that hangs over my head like a glass jar. And tomorrow is another day of purgatory but I feel that glass jar vibrating above me. It craves its first crack just like my body craves the satisfaction of being right. Because most of the time my body is right. And once again, I give in.

I’m going to leave him one day, but not today because today I love him.

The Run

Last summer, a Monday morning,

I finished my run and walked back home

My adrenaline still pumping from the run

I smiled from getting my dose of serotonin

I walked happily, ready to face the day ahead

You’ve got a great ass, mama

His friends laughed like it was joke of the century

My adrenaline pumped, Not from the run this time

Not from happiness or a sense of achievement

It was rage. I thought I’d burst into flames

I felt my face growing red

I could feel a sickness in the pit of my stomach

A familiar sickness

A sickness known to all women in the world

Regardless of our skin color and ethnicity

We know this feeling too well

Like one of our primal senses

Now, before you start shaming me

And telling me that it’s probably my fault

Or I asked for it

I was wearing joggers pants and a boxy tee

Nothing fancy, nothing revealing

Just the regular runner’s clothes

Now, before you tell me men will be men

If being a man means getting a free pass to disrespect women

If being a man means getting a free pass to rape us

Molest us, make us feel unsafe

In our own country, in our own city

In our own clothes, in our own skin

Well, they need to stop existing then

They need stop occupying more space in this world

They need to stop acting like they own this world

Like we are at their mercy

They need to stop looking at us as creatures

Who merely exist to fulfill their needs

They need to stop with their sense of entitlement

We need to stop creating these men

We need to kill them in the womb

Because scums don’t deserve a place

In this world or in a woman’s womb

He stays there sheltered for nine months

And comes out to bite us, his creator

We protect them, we are the reason why they exist in the first place

We need to stop giving them the power to overpower us

We need to stop making them think they are better than us

We need to stop saying men will be men

because men need to learn to behave

We need to show them that if men won’t stop being men

Men won’t be alive long enough to become men

Men will stop existing in this world

because this world doesn’t belong to us

As much as it belongs to them

I felt a lump growing in my throat

As I always feel when things like this happen

Injustice, disrespect for a fellow human

Who has a right to walk the length and breadth of this planet

As much as men do

We keep preaching the world and each other

About self love and self respect

But that day I walked away to save myself

As much as I wanted to break the fucker’s face

I walked away because there’s a family back home

Friends who love me, people who’d want me to walk away

They’d want to see me alive more than seeing me fight a lost cause

Seeing me injured and crippled

Take the blame for no mistake of mine

Pay for a sin I never committed

So I chose to walk away

Like all the women always do

Tears stung my eyes, I dug my fingernails into my fist

I bit the insides of my mouth

Their laughter still ringing in my ears

Those words still echoing in my head

I crossed the road and took the long route

Putting as much distance between me and them

I ran and that time, it was not for pleasure

It was not get my dose of serotonin

Not to feel good about myself

I ran for my life, for my dignity

I ran out of fear

I ran to save myself.
