think about it, right.
what we know now about aryox. that he was a fighter (in the sense of “guy who fights” more than the actual class), aligning himself with a group that he didn’t actually want to win so that the small folk could take their chance in bahumia. that he gave (gave) his heart back to melora. that he sacrificed himself and, in a surge of magic and energy, sealed the rift and the only weapon that could open it, the weapon that was used to kill him. that he could see the future, possible futures, and worked to act in the way that would have the best outcome. that his constant companion could, at least partially, channel those abilities as well.
and then think about the boons, melora’s boons. selfless attack. action surge. divination rolls. chronal shift. spell storing and spores, an expansion of his companion’s powers.
the heart of her still living friend, with the powers of her friend who was long dead. just enough to tip the scales and protect the world.
and perhaps, just perhaps, aryox saw that coming. a thought that provided melora with some comfort.

Watching “Melora” with Julian’s backstory in mind is pretty interesting. Now, we obviously can’t fault Julian for being “out of character” in this episode because, keep in mind, his backstory and status as an augment hadn’t even been thought up yet. Still, if we ignore that and look only at canon, Julian being seemingly gung-ho about “fixing” Melora’s disability is pretty noteworthy. Even if Melora was doing this willingly, Julian’s major trauma comes from his own disabilities being “cured” without his permission as a child. I’m not going to comment on whether or not the way disability was written in this episode was overall good or not. I feel like some was good, some was bad, but I don’t think I know enough to give my two cents on this topic.
The point is, I really do wonder how Julian feels during this episode. I definitely don’t think his reaction makes zero sense even with his backstory in mind, but how he can still feel so eager to “fix” this person’s disability (or at least pretend to be eager), is something to explore. I’m thinking a lot of internalized ableism at the very least. (The backstory he gives about seeing a girl die when he was 10 was definitely interesting as well. Is it even true? Is he making up fake origin stories for why he became a doctor to obscure the truth?)

There are so many moments that I'm anticipating for the Mighty Nein animated series. There are so many moments.
But one that consistently sticks with me is the moment with Fjord at the Kiln.
The scene is already plenty cinematic on its own. You can imagine volcanic underlighting. You can imagine the peaceful quiet of the night. Fjord, alone, sword in hand, is finally done. He challenges his patron and holds his pact blade against his chest.
But we can do a little more with this.
Because the funny thing about that moment is that every time Fjord would have a nasty dream and sneak out during C2, Matt would have Travis roll a stealth check. If only to see if he could make it out without being noticed. Sometimes his rolls weren't great.
But the night at the Kiln, Travis rolled a natural twenty on stealth. That's cool, except in hindsight. I hadn't realized until a re-watch, but because of that natural twenty-
Well, because of that, if Fjord had done enough damage to go unconscious beside the volcano, no one would've known.
Crazy, huh?
.....We can use that.
Have Fjord at the volcano.
Take a second where he's just standing there: considering the blade.
Then, he brings it up to his chest, delivers his ultimatum and waits for an answer. We cut to the Nein sleeping, huddled together. We cut to the Dust family, also sleeping. Spend a few more moments with Fjord, where nothing happens.
Then he steps forward and drives the blade into his chest. Give the audience a second to process.
Cut back to those who are sleeping.
Fjord drives the blade deeper in and takes another step forward.
Cut to the sleeping Nein.
Cut to one more step, one more push, a soft wind that eases the pain, and then the final throw.
Draw the scene out. Add to the anxiety of the moment by cutting back and forth. Have all of this go on while reminding the audience that the rest of the Nein have no way to know or intervene if things get bad.
Let's get the newbies screaming at the screen for everybody to wake up and keep Fjord from killing himself.
That might be fun.

I made a Spire of Conflux walking staff topper for my friend's Keyleth cosplay. I really like how it turned out!
I put thick soft wire inside half a wreath and tied it down with thin wire. The jewel is a faceted easter egg, so it's easy to put lights in it. The base is eva foam and eva foam clay. All covered in paint, moss, and faux greenery.
The bird is to break your heart 🖤, and the goldfish for laughs 😁

Its very important to me that the timing of Fearne's plea to the Wildmother and Orym's plea to the Wildmother are close to each other in the timeline. Partly for: the heartwrenching image of Orym, exhausted, voice sad and tired, fresh off of his friends, again, wondering if the gods are- worth the hassle. Pleading to the Wildmother, desperate and lost. Unaware that somewhere, sometime adjacent, Fearne, scared but whole, had wandered into the Wildmother temple. And prayed to a god she wasn't sure was alive, leaning on Orym's faith, thinking of him, channeling him, for his sake. Asking to- above all else, let him know they're alright? He'll be worrying. (And he was. And he is).
And partly for the image of the Wildmother, presumably very busy with some kind of apocalypse handling logistics, to either:
- Recieve Fearne's ask of "hey..... tell Orym we're okay (and maybe keep him okay too. if you can)" only to immediately recieve Orym's message and go "oh yeah hes absolutely NOT okay, oof"
OR
- Recieve Orym's wavering, heartfelt plea, followed immediately by "hey lady!! if you're still alive can you tell orym we're okay-" and thinking "oh yeah Orym your friends are fine-"
(i cant figure out which is funnier. in a tragic kind of way.)

i’m obsessed with julian bashir so don’t mind me doing a lil analysis but during Season 2 ep 6, “Melora” at the end he just was so idk how to say it, defeated? at the prospect that she wasn’t continuing treatment. I mean, obviously he was glad that she found herself and what she wanted, but it’s not what he wanted out of her. ok but dusty what did he want from melora?? HE WANTED PENANCE. HE COULDNT SAVE THE OTHER GIRL SO IF HE “saved” MELORA HE COULD MAYBE FEEL LESS GUILT OR WHATEVER

fjord my beloved paladin sailor who accidentally ended up wielding a vestige of divergence that looks like water. a blade forged by the love and conflict of the wildmother and the moonweaver. who fell in love with a blue trickster cleric and found family in one of melora’s death clerics. who was saved in a dream by the image of melora and who helped save jester from the rule of the moonweaver. fjord who was given the last name stone out of cruel apathy that somehow spun itself into an affirmation of the path he chose to live, maybe for the first time as just himself with no mask. who earned the blade’s exalting when he killed avantika and affirmed his choice to protect the seas for the wildmother instead of maybe one day control them with uk’otoa.

pacts made in the feywild are tricky. the promise is intrinsically tied to your soul itself. and, before the taming of the wild, before the crowns and courts and seelie and unseelie, that magic was stronger, more intense.
more punishing.
melora, aryox, and telaine knew this, when they sat around a beating divine heart, one that had moments ago belonged to a god hellbent on world destruction, and promised to work together, split the heart, and remain neutral in the conflicts of mortals.
when telaine broke the pact, first, and sided with the dragons, melora and aryox knew the punishment would fall to their hands, as the people who had been party to the promise. they came up with the idea of the demiplane, together, and held off. waiting until the right moment. in the end, melora had to banish her there alone, but the alternative, the magic of the feywild consuming her friend, was far worse.
aryox breaking the pact was calculated. he saw the future, he knew it was the only way to get the future he wanted. the one that was best for the world. he knew then, as well, that his penance would also be voluntary, that he would return his piece of the heart to melora. she would need it, after all.
melora stuck to the pact for centuries. millennia. with no one left to keep her in check but the powerful magic threatening at the corners of her vision, ready to strike at any misstep. she probably had many times where it seemed like the best option, but came up with another solution in the end. the pact stood before her, the last standing memory of the mortal life she once lived, the last connection to her friends, the last domino to fall in the shattering of their relationship.
when she finally broke it, when she no longer had a choice, when the threat was to bahumia herself and where she must intervene, she had nothing left to give. her friends and companions were long gone. and she was doomed either way. so she gave her body, her corporeal form. one last powerful force of magic, to both strengthen her broken heart and pay for the promise she broke.
pacts demand sacrifices in the feywild. and, arguably, this one held the world together. and even after it took all of its sacrifices, it still does.
