Title: Dancing Queen
A/N: happy belated valentine's day gang- @jerzwriter tagged me in a fun, impromptu game where you list what songs your otp would be listening to this feb 14. i took a different approach to the prompt, as i often find myself doing lol- plus i had this hc in mind already- so here we are (but the short answer: enid's song would be get ur freak on by missy elliot); the long answer: this blurb🖤
Character(s): Enid Mendoza (she/her), Will Thomson (they/them), Zahir Saidi (he/him)
Summary: Will and Zahir discover a very special dance video. @choicesficwriterscreations
Word Count: 701
---
Another day at Park & Davis…
The file room- Zahir's newest home away from home. He eyed the pile of precariously stacked boxes with trepidation. “Okay. You can do this, Zahir. Just grab the files for Morrison.”
The pep talk did little to assuage his nerves, but he pressed on, carefully pulling from the middle of the stack like he was playing a high-stakes version of Jenga. One hand on the handle, the other protectively hovering over the pile. A bead of sweat rolled down his forehead. Just a little more-
“Zahir! You gotta see this!” Will’s voice boomed through the quiet expanse of shelves. An unbecoming shriek tore through his throat as he scrambled to steady the boxes. Only when he was sure he wouldn't literally be buried in paperwork did he take a breath.
“Will- you can't just creep up on me like that,” he huffed, still trying to calm his heart rate.
Unbothered, Will pushed their phone towards him. A paused video lit up the screen. “Trust me, this is important.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Just watch it,” they insisted, practically bouncing on their heels.
“Alright- alright-”
A simple, yet rhythmic melody played through the speakers. Dancers stood on stage in V-formation, heads dawned with oversized bucket hats. They swayed lazily to the beat- then the song truly began.
“Missy be puttin’ it down- I'm the hottest ‘round- I told y'all mother-- y'all can't stop me now-”
Everything broke loose. The crowd came alive with raucous cheers as the performers dropped down to their knees in sync. Zahir’s brows shot up at the sheer intensity of the routine- his heart pumping wildly just watching them move. “They’re really good. Are they from your college team?”
Will shook his head, minimizing the video. “Nah. Check out the date in the description. This was over ten years ago.”
“Then why are we watching this?”
“Notice anything special about the one in the center?”
“Uh… they're talented?”
“Oh, you sweet summer child-”
“My birthday is in November.”
“I'd take another hard look if I were you,” Will hummed knowingly.
“Can't you just tell me?”
“And take the joy of realizing it for yourself from you? Never.”
“Will-”
“Zahir,” they mocked.
“I really need to get back to work.”
“This won’t take long.”
Zahir sighed, but resumed the video anyway. His frustration grew as he tried to catch a glimpse of the lead dancer’s face- their movements too fast for the camera to get a clear shot. The quality maxing out at 360p didn’t help either. Luckily, whoever was filming decided to zoom in at the exact moment their- her- head popped up. “No way- is that-”
“Yup.”
“But she’s-”
“I know.”
"How'd you even find this?"
Will grinned smugly. "I have my ways. And a lot of downtime between meetings."
Her hair was much longer, falling just over her lower back. In the time he’s worked at Park & Davis, he’d never seen her with straight hair. Forget about the carefree expression plastered on her face- which admittedly hadn’t changed much. But there was no mistaking it, that was-
“What are you two doing?” Enid’s commanding tone disrupted the peace between them. Will slammed the power button, shutting off the video before pocketing their phone.
“Uh- nothing?” Zahir answered meekly.
She crossed her arms. “Did you get the files for Morrison?”
“Well- not yet-”
“So not only have you not done the one task I gave you, you’re choosing to hide out in the file room. Is that right?”
“N-no,” he stammered, his brain on the fritz at Enid’s piercing stare. “It’s just…”
“Just what?”
Words poured out of him like a running faucet. Babbling tended to be his default coping mechanism. “We represent some of the world’s biggest tech moguls. Blaire Hall, Khaan Mousavi, a third person I can’t name right now but I’m sure exists, yet we’re still slaves to this archaic form of documentation. Paper. Isn’t that ironic? The fact that we haven’t digitized all this is insane. We’d save space, time, trees-”
“Zahir,” Enid interrupted.
“Yeah?”
“Get the files.”
“Right away, Ms. Mendoza,” he squeaked out, spinning on his heels to get back to his game of Jenga.

And another new(ish) Kraftwerk cover - "The Model" by Sonido Gallo Negro
Mexico's Sonido Gallo Negro returns to Names You Can Trust for another 7-inch release of quintessential cumbias, this time plucked from their latest album, Paganismo. Aside from the original composition and B-side "Cumbia De Las Plañideras," the standout single selection pays homage to a fitting icon in electronic pioneers Kraftwerk. SGN blends their signature sound of live cumbia rhythms and swelling synthesizers with the instantly recognizable melodies of "The Model." It's a perfect match and interpretation of a ubiquitous classic that has reached air waves the world over, now further immortalized in a blissed out cumbia. GABRIEL LÓPEZ – GUITAR, ORGAN ISRAEL MARTINEZ – BASS LUCIO DE LOS SANTOS – FLUTE, EWI DARIO MALDONADO – GUITAR, SYNTHESIZER EDWIN IRIGOYEN – CONGAS ROBERTO VARGAS – GÜIRO, MARACAS, CLAVE ENRIQUE CASASOLA – TIMBAL DR. 178: Various Artists // The Paths of Pain: The CAIFE Label, Quito, 1960–68
Tumblr media
The Paths of Pain: The CAIFE Label, Quito, 1960–68 Various Artists 2021, Honest Jon's (Bandcamp)
One of my favourite reissue compilations of recent years, Honest Jon’s The Paths of Pain: The CAIFE Label, Quito, 1960–68) collects recordings discovered in 2013 in the offices of impresario Carlos Rota after his death. The Quito, Ecuador-based CAIFE label had gone out of business more than 40 years before, and while at its height a number of regionally popular stars recorded for the label, its growth potential was hampered by the fact that few Ecuadorians owned record players in the 1960s. Based on the photographs and descriptions in the vivid liner notes by Ramona Stout, Rota was a compulsive hoarder (and general scoundrel), but despite the chaotic state of his storage, the tapes are uncannily pristine. (Being restored at Abbey Road no doubt helped as well!) When I hear traditional mestizo folk music, it’s nearly always on a battered 45 or through a rime of tape hiss even a diligent remastering engineer has failed to eliminate. Though with my inexpert ear I’d have guessed a vintage for these songs closer to the ‘30s or ‘40s than the ‘60s, the sound is crystal clear and untouched by contemporary studio gloss. Like unearthing a perfectly preserved music box from a fossil bed, there is something magical about hearing this delicate music with all its detail intact: intricate Spanish-influenced guitarwork, lovelorn vocal harmonies, quavering organs, even the occasional twinkle of a xylophone.
youtube
Stout attempts to hunt down information on all of the artists featured on the compilation with varying degrees of success. Of Biluka y Los Caníbales, she is able to not only share that the strange cartoony whistling sound featured on the recording is the artist blowing over a Ficus leaf laid flat on his tongue, but that he could play up to eight songs on each leaf before it became unusable. Of Los Iñaquingas, an Andean flute duo, she can tell us nearly nothing. In the case of Romany-Italian émigré Raul Emiliani, who contributes violin to a Gypsy jazz-inflected duet with pianist Héctor Bonilla, tracking down his still-living widow provides material for a wryly amusing miniature biography, including the detail that he once stole label head Carlos Rota’s car to settle an unpaid debt. These musicians’ individual stories weave together the narrative of Rota’s family (Carlos’s son Daniel headed the restoration project) with that of the musical era captured on these tapes—both a ‘pure’ distillation of Ecuador’s unique musical heritage, and one largely abandoned by younger generations in a more culturally globalized era.
The songs are sublime and sublimely sequenced. If there is a theme beyond their common provenance it is that the compilers have chosen to stick to songs of sorrow. While the album’s frequently chipper melodies makes for light, even easy listening, the translated lyrics helpfully provided tell a different story. Try “Sangrante Corazon / Bloody Heart” (performed by Hermanas Mendoza Suasti):
The bloody heart which you hold in your hands is granted eternal life when I may kiss your temples. Captive like this, I want to live. I exist in anguish, fearful of abandonment. In my martyrdom, sacrificed on the altars of oblivion, downcast, nonetheless my soul beams, when you’re near.
Or better still, “Desesperacion / Desperation” (Benítez y Valencia):
You live enchained to my memory, but still the poisoned claws of pain constantly dig into me. Ever since you crossed my path, like a hallucination, my fate is to follow you. Since then all I can think about is seeing myself in your wide eyes, suns of passion. Even if it impossible to adore you because my heart is in ashes. My pain makes you out dimly, like the shadow of a cloud. In the end, if you leave, my darling, you abandon me to pain, and so I hide, in despair, crying for love. In the end, without your love, I’ll die in desperation, from love, from pain.
Goddamn. But the searing intensity of the lyrics’ anguish isn’t a great leap from the jaunty English murder ballad, or the wave of drownings and vehicular suicides going on in contemporaneous American pop. The songs on the CAIFE tapes hold on to something luminous in loss—and like all beautiful lost things, give off an unmistakable glow to those who find them.

Pull Up was my top song of the year (it's the b-b-b-b-baby/b-b-b-b-babe literally thats it)
Slidin'- this came out too late in the year (i think?) to be my top but it's just a great garbage pop song. and those high notes could go right in my r&b playlist
The Other Side - I've been really into keke palmer lately yall should check out her cover
If I'm Lucky- OBSESSED its very unique, for him. u know I like a song when it inspires a whole ass picture
X2CU - "started as a sexy rebound / girl you got the best of me now" yea I'm gonna just throw that on repeat thank you.
Okay but what have I been playing on repeat lately:
CUFF IT (Beyonce) - I actually don't listen to a lot of Beyonce but instagram got this shit in my head and when I heard the whole thing I was hooked its incredibly good and has a very fun melody I can see why everyone wants to film themselves dancing to it. "I feel like fallin in love / I'm in the mood to fuck somethin up" BITCH
So Emotional (Whitney Houston) - her movie is coming out soon so she's been on my mind lately :') I keep coming back to this one but special mention to IWTDWS and How Will I Know. the laugh she does is so healing

Hello, Eeshu! I will start with a complaint: who gave you permission to deliver angst on Alec's birthday? First cc grace us with no new Alec content, then you. Betrayal.
But okay, I get it, nobody wants malec to be happy, fine, I long ago made peace with this.
Now back to the business. This was great. Ari was a cutie. Favoritism when it comes to children, don't approve, but she gets away with that, Alec doesn't have a bad taste so I trust him. Also her fooling everybody that she is content with endless ice-cream and then just going for rescue too. In my times being a 12-year-olds I wasn't that badass. To be fair, malec aren't my parent.
Malec: *go to hell, get their asses in danger on a daily basis* why are our kids are such troublemakers, who tought them that? It's all Jace's influence.
Also feral magnus robbed agaaaaaaain. That glimpse wasn't enooooooough.
Can I ask: why Arianna? Both your motivation for choosing this name and malec's?
Thank you so much. I loved writing this fic. I make no apologies for the angst tho lol.
As for the name Arianna—
Malec’s reason- Arianna has lots of meanings in Greek, Italian, Persian and other cultures. It means melody, holy, gifted. When Malec found her—and by malec I mean when Alec Lightwood, found her, she was crying. Alec found a two years old child crying in the forest on some mission but her cries almost sounded like a melody. It wasn’t ugly crying. It seemed like she was singing. She didn’t seem in distress at all for some reason.
Acc to Magnus, she was crying so cutely or softly because she knew that Alec was about to find him and that she was going to be saved soon. Magnus is a sappy bastard like that.
But lastly, in some German cultures, ‘Arianna’ means—Silver. Magnus thought it was very very appropriate. So they had to name her Arianna because she looks so much like Alec to him.
My reason for the name
Ari has been inspired from Aristotle Mendoza from Ari and Dante discover the secrets of the universe. He’s the bestest boy and one of my fave fictional characters. I love him and I love the name Ari so I chose it for Malec’s daughter.

De Algemene Verwarring #91 - 2 May 2023
The ninety-first episode of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link below that will take you directly to the Mixcloud page:
https://www.mixcloud.com/MedialabKortrijk/de-algemene-verwarring-2-mei-2023/
Pictured below is American band Honey Radar, based in Philadelphia. They are specialised in lo-fi pretty hooks and melodies, short songs, and releasing a shitload of singles. Also a few full-lengths, and one of those is called Ruby Puff Of Dust and I recently bought it and it’s great. They are one of those bands I got to know by listening to some American radio shows, and I’m really happy to own a few of those singles and this lp now. I’ve never really tried to get into Guided By Voices, but why would I do that if there’s Honey Radar? Also, I would like to call on all you show bookers out there: Honey Radar is coming to Europe in June, they play a festival in Norway and leading up to that also a few club shows. Paris on June 28, no date in Belgium yet. Book them, and I’ll come dance. Thanks. More music in this episode coming from Bad Breeding (who were an absolute blast in The Pit’s), Les Lou’s, Magnetix, Trio, The March Violets, Ligament, Lake Of Dracula, Linea Aspera, Jef Mertens, The Plommons, and more! And beneath the photo you can find the playlist for this show. Enjoy!

Mordechai Mendoza - Young Love (Indie Pop)
Tumblr media
🕑 1 min / Text: Adrian Release Date: Oct. 07, 2022 Well, the week has just begun, but if you need something to help you slow down, 'Young Love' by Mordechai Mendoza is the way. I recently came across this gifted singer/songwriter and guitarist from Canada, and all that I know is that I'm loving his smooth downtempo ballad sound. The vocals are soulful, the melodies are quite soothing, and the guitars and percussions make it very easy to get into the groove. 'Young Love' sounds a little bit like a "modern" Beatles record, but with a strong feeling of nostalgia. Just beautiful! Give it a listen and check out Mordechai Mendoza's music on Spotify and Instagram: Melody: ★★★★★ | Production: ★★★★☆ | Arrangement: ★★★☆☆ | Energy: ★★★★★ |  Stream: https://open.spotify.com/track/0RVuwI1c1qOFukjOR2emBV Follow: https://www.instagram.com/mordechai_mendoza/ ✔️ Available on our Indie Playlist on Spotify.

Marco Mendoza "New Direction"
Tumblr media

THE SHOW IS ABOUT TO BEGIN— WELCOME, K! ANDREA MENDOZA HAS BEEN ACCEPTED. LINDSEY MORGAN IS NOW TAKEN.
Andrea has been given many trials in her life, and despite the world’s attempts to bring her down, she’s stayed not only upright but come up as a victor. Her survival despite the odds is one that will be put to the test in Vegas. While she has been met with some luck, there’s no telling how much longer it will last. Her only alliance is to herself, but that’s only for now. She is NIKE.
GET BUSY LIVING, OR GET BUSY DYING. PLEASE FOLLOW THE NEXT STEPS HERE AND SEND IN YOUR ACCOUNT TO THE MAIN WITHIN 24 HOURS.
Everyone suspects ANDREA MENDOZA of at least one of the cardinal sins, but in Nevada, the worst sins are bound by blood and SHE has yet to roll the dice. HER fixation on the neon lights of Nevada started TWO MONTHS ago but when the lights start to hum, they close their eyes. Under the desert sun, they claim the act of BARTENDER AT THE WALL. They’re often mistaken for LINDSEY MORGAN before those crimson colored glasses slide down their nose. ANDREA better get busy living, or they’ll get busy dying by the ripe age of THIRTY-FOUR. There are no second acts in a marked life, and it’s measured out by the melody of BAD HABITS by ED SHEERAN.
