midterm series, day 3 | 04.07.21
another late night studying. last push before a one day break and then another exam again. it’s pretty hot these days it’s hard to concentrate on studying 🥺
qotd: what do you want to eat right now? I just ate pancit (a personal favorite that I’m limiting to once per week because I’m obsessed) 😅

04.05.21 | what a productive day!! instead of sleeping after the exam, i cleaned, cooked brunch, and showered. now i’m on my desk studying for tomorrow’s exam. i know my progress is slow during the day (i’m a night owl so i quickly absorb things at night) so i’m taking it easy and taking topics one at a time. :)

04.02.21 | hello! how are you guys enjoying your holidays? from where I am we have a long weekend because of holy week. our research mentor though is monitoring and passive-aggressively pressuring us to attend zoom activities which is exhausting. I feel like I don’t have a holiday break because I carry with me the (for the lack of a better word) trauma that comes with continuous synchronous meetings, even if it is not lec-based. it’s exhausting. it sucks. one of the disadvantages of online classes is the lack of respect of personal time of the students. 🤧 so I’m going to take tonight off to focus on my prep for next week’s midterm exams. 😌
on another note though, one good thing today, I revamped my notion to a sailor moon theme!! I hope you guys are enjoying the holidays.
day 29 / light academia ✨
day 30 / take it easy. alot fridays for yourself. your backlogs can wait until saturday. but take friday night off and relax because in med school, it is vital to keep you sane. our mentor always reminds us of this. :)

03.29.21 | pretty happy with what I accomplished today. was able to make a study plan until next week and when I’m going to incorporate the topics I have to study before our oral revalida at the start of may. for the planning I just use notion, the calendar method since it’s easy to move things around with it. I feel more structured now. let’s hope I keep up with my sched and not fall behind! 🤧
I found an app called mindmaster where I can make diagrams easily with just “enter” and “tab.” it’s very simple and it’s worth it especially if you need a compressed version of the bulky content you are studying. ☺️
I hope everyone’s having a lovely week! 💛
day 28 / this online zoomester, i’ve actually done a research about it!!! what a RIDE it has been. there is just so much going on but i’m glad for the learnings. 😌

03.28.21 | how’s your weekend going?
after the exam yesterday morning, I spent the whole day off and just napped and watched netflix. I usually get started on my week like work on my planner and plan the week ahead and study on sunday. currently I’m going over our micro lectures. with proper rest, I feel more human that I’m able to cross a lot of things off of my checklist. this morning I did my monthly budget on excel and wrote on my journal which felt so good! 😌
what about you? how do you start your week? ☺️
day 24 / fave word / stability.✨
day 25 / @jeonchemstudy has great text posts!
day 26 / during our small group discussions and i demonstrated chvostek’s sign on kim seon ho’s picture posted on my pillow and FASTER protocol on jennie kim (posted on my pillow again) 😆 everybody enjoyed it as much as i did!
day 27 / i love the learnings, of course. med school is exhausting but mostly it’s the learning and the people i met and suffer with in med school that make all the exhaustion bearable. 🥺

03.23.21 | I’ve been so busy I haven’t had enough time to stay here and post since I’ve adapted to a new habit. after classes I would take a nap, then wake up at 7 or 8pm to wash up, eat dinner, and prepare for my studying at 9pm. if I have enough sleep, I’ll study earlier just like now. I’m about to start and study for our zoom-proctored shifting on gene expression. so far it has been working.
what about you? how’s your sem going? have you established a new routine or habit recently?
day 22 / my comfort food recently is ramen. soo in love with ramen 😌💛
day 23 / there is this thing called 3’ to 5’ exonuclease that stops mismatch in our gene. if this is absent, like in virus, it will mutate. our bodies have a proof reading function and i think that’s v cool.

03.21.21 | late night studying for tomorrow’s shifting and pracs. been off recently because it has just been SO HECTIC. seriously, no break. 🤧 i visited my family this weekend and that’s good. 💛 also, i just started watching sailor moon and i love it! can’t wait to watch again next weekend!
day 9: you’re loved. don’t let anyone make you believe otherwise. also, you’ll be surprised of how much you can achieve in just a few years. so just keep moving forward okay?
day 11: i want to go overseas with my partner! and experience their music there, and take late night romantic walks. ditch the tourist tour and experience the city— how locals live instead.
day 12: flowers! russian sage/catmint/lavender 💜
day 13: hmm idk. paul kalanithi’s book, i guess. made me want to write a book someday that links literature and medicine.
day 14: well, you will always have yourself. so love yourself because you can only rely on yourself. 🥺
day 15: @gliagirlphd 😌
day 16: usually java chip! peppermint or lemon tea 😌
day 17: here! entitled “on a warm day”
day 18: @soap-stones

03.14.21 | good morning!! only one day left til the ides of march. i woke up this morning, stayed a little while on bed, and proceeded with scheduling my day and making breakfast of coffee (and grilled cheese made by my beau). it’s quite gloomy outside but it’s alright. i am dedicating today for chores, requirements, and review for tuesday’s shifting on physiology!! then in the afternoon we might go to M for snacks and berry’s walk. 😌 included a photo of udon from friday night when i went out to buy a gift for my grandpa.
day 10: tag someone whose aesthetic you love seeing on your feed / @essayisms @petrichorals ✨

good morning!!! here are photos from yesterday. it’s 830am and i just slept for 12hrs. i fell asleep in the middle of watching ocean 13 which i know is a sin but!!! i’ve only been getting 3-5 hrs of sleep since monday because of exams so thank god my 7am class just got moved to 4pm. i’ve opened the window to let the cold, damp air into my bedroom and the weather’s not hot, just perfectly cool this morning. 😌 now i’m going to eat breakfast of crepe and nutella and have some coffee while i print jaeger’s chart for later’s intro to physical diagnosis practice session. and probably do my biochem manual then. 😌
day 8: take on international women’s day. / feminism should encompass all races and gender (e.g. trans). women have been fighting for this for centuries and the fight does not end here because esp in our country, we’re still heavily patriarchal. but that doesn’t mean that there’s no hope. there always is.

A clean, organized study space has an aesthetic value, yes. But trust me when I say that it truly de-clutters your brain and helps you focus with a clear mind.

Hi, I really enjoy your blog! Could you perhaps recommend some ECs for a high school student interested/passionate about medicine?
For highschoolers interested in medicine, I always advise to initiate your path by exposing yourself to the hospital setting. This is to get a feel of the environment, and to make sure you can tolerate it (hospitals aren’t for everyone!). An excellent way to do this would be to volunteer at your local hospital. Make sure to get in contact with your hospital a good few months (3-4 months) in advance from when you want to start, because it’s usually competitive.
Another excellent opportunity would be to shadow physicians and build contacts/networks. The reason for this is that, usually, you’ll need these people to contact later on when it comes to recommendations & reference letters.
Any health-orientated field work would be great. I remember that I interned at a diagnostic facility when I was in high school! The important point is to expose yourself to medicine, so you can make your decision as well as look apt to your prospective colleges.
There are also a lot of research opportunities available to highschoolers that you should look into if you have competitive grades.
I wish you the best of luck!

MICROBIOLOGY TIP (and applicable to other classes, of course): Making a chart is extremely helpful; especially when you're dealing with over 30 different kinds of bacterias, their diseases, treatments and drugs. However, as a last minute tool, I tend to create a color flow chart as a way to (1) write it all down again and (2) feed my (sometimes) photographic memory. Excellent way of recalling those nitty gritty details that undergraduate professors love to hit us with.

Hi there! Im a third semester med school student! And my biggest issue is TIME, I take hours to deeply understand a chapter and when Im happy about it, I get so depressed and and anxious because I never get all the work done. It is just too much :(! I stay up late trying to finish everything but the only thing I get is being sleepy during the day, agh! Any tips? ❤️ much appreciated xx
I can TOTALLY relate and need you to know that this happens to even the very best of us. But even then, you need to be proactive in changing your habits.
My first concern would be to make sure your health is okay. I was in a similar situation for years, thinking it was my own fault. It turned out I had severe hypothyroidism which made me lethargic, inattentive and eventually, very depressed. Get a blood test to make sure you are OK.
My next concern is your sleeping schedule. Looks like staying up late doesn't work. How about waking up early? Do you go to all your classes? GO TO CLASS. Keep up with the work on a daily basis. Review the days work every night. That way you have at least *some* knowledge on the topic. That way, you can allow yourself some extra time to build on that knowledge.
First and foremost: Work out. Eat right. Take care of yourself. You cannot be a physician and help others if you cannot start with yourself. When that's out of the way, fix your habits by simply changing them. It took me a year of trial and error to find what worked best for me. You can do this too. Stay persistent and remind yourself of the great path that you have just paved for yourself! You absolutely got this :)

What are some classes you recommend indefinitely for pre med majors? I can't decide and Im scared some of them will kill my gpa :(
Well, I strongly believe that you'd rather prepare yourself before medical school and take hard classes. My only thing would be that you do not over-do it and take many of them at the same time. I'd recommend the following, apart from the basic pre-requisites:
Biochemistry (2 semesters if you can, intro and a harder)
Cell Biology and/or Molecular Biology
Physiology (upper level preferably
* bolded are the very important ones that you must must must take.*

would u suggest a masters before applying to Medschool?
Depends on your situation, of course. If you have a low GPA or low MCAT and need more time to boost it up, go for it. I would like to point out, however, that MD schools do not count your graduate gpa into your undergraduate gpa, which is what they specifically look at. So if you're looking to boost your GPA solely, then it will be no point. I would then suggest post-bacc programs. But i hate suggesting those lol. I'd rather you do your masters to show them that you were able to handle tough courses. With Post-Baccs, you're sometimes in a dead end if you (god forbid) do not get into medical school afterwards. With masters, you can continue to get your Ph.D!
I've attended a lot of info sessions for various medical schools recently and have been constantly hearing about the average age of incoming students being very high (23-24). Most of these applicants have their masters and are very competitive applicants. For this reason, I highly advise those that want to boost their apps to go for it if they are weary of their current application.
