Sleepless, Chapter 4
Ao3 link here
While Magenta and Fawn had their conversation, Green was having one of his own with the invisible web of data that wrapped around the planet below. This attack had been routed through their communications system and since that was his turf he was taking it personally.
Magenta had given him the data he’d pulled out of the computer, now with the aid of said computer he was using that data to follow the signals back to their source. “Like a bloodhound on the scent… or a shark following blood in the water,” was his absent thought as he traced an IP address through Italy, up into Spain, through France and across the Channel into England. “That ‘blood in the water’ metaphor is a pretty good illustration of how I’m feeling right now.”
There absolutely would be blood on the floor, the walls and potentially the ceiling once they got their hands on whoever was behind this. Cloudbase people were a tightly knit group as a rule, the officers even more so, but that it was Scarlet being targeted just made things so much worse. Scarlet had literally laid his life down for each of them, multiple times in some cases, sparing them the agony of injury or death and taking it on himself. While he insisted that as far as he was concerned there wasn’t a debt and that they’d have done the same if their positions were reversed, as a group the officers had independently decided that they did owe him so they made an effort to look after him. Keeping the watch while he was ‘down’ was one way that they showed their care and appreciation for all that he did, and to know that he’d not only been attacked on their base - their home and ‘safe place’- but had been under attack for months on end was… Green shook his head. He didn’t have the words to describe how he felt about that.
A few more key clicks and he chased the signal back across the globe, crossing the Pacific to jump across Japan, China and Russia. A clever little bait and switch stymied him for a time, but then he found the trail again and jumped across into Africa.
Green frowned when the network of origin changed, going off the public system and into the Spectrum one. This didn’t bode well. Magenta had mentioned that he’d suspected it was an inside job, this was proof. It made his hunt easier though, there wasn’t as much traffic. He tracked it through Spectrum Pretoria, then to his horror the signal terminated in a patch of grassland between the Madikwe Game Reserve and the town of Molatedi in South Africa.
It wasn’t labelled on any map, and as far as the locals were concerned the heavily guarded facility was something to do with the nearby Molatedi Dam, but to those in the know, that was the location of Spectrum Research, or more formally ‘Spectrum Research and Development’. The wide open spaces and low density population made it ideal for testing, the wild animals gave an easy excuse for substantial walls and people with guns and there was easy access to the hunting lodge they maintained alongside Spectrum Intelligence for hosting visitors for meetings.
“If it’s there it can’t be the Mysterons,” Green muttered to himself, sitting back in his chair and letting his arms dangle- his shoulders were complaining at the tension he’d been holding in them as he hunted out the attacker. “SR people get checked regularly and there hasn’t been a threat. It has to be one of ours. But…why?” It didn’t make any sense! Why would someone from Spectrum attack one of their own? Especially since it was the person who was shouldering the bulk of the burden of keeping everyone else alive and breathing. It just didn’t make any logical sense!
“Lieutenant?”
Green managed to stifle the yelp but not the jump as Colonel White suddenly made his presence known. He hadn’t even noticed the Colonel come into the room! “Sir,” Green pointed to the screen once he’d managed to pull his heart down out of his throat. “The hack, it came from SR.”
A beep on the intercom interrupted them before White could respond to that.
“Doctor Fawn to Colonel White, I’ve got some updates for you.”
White leaned over and thumbed the ‘reply’ button. “Well timed, Doctor, Lieutenant Green has just made good progress as well,” he paused for a moment. “The conference room in ten, Doctor. Bring Captains Magenta and Blue with you as well,” he added, knowing that Adam hadn’t left Paul’s side.
“S.I.G.”
The Colonel turned to Green, lips thinned and something dark and dangerous brewing behind his eyes. “Summon all the captains to the conference room and bring your information. It’s time everyone was brought up to speed.”

In his office at Spectrum Research and Development, halfway up the office block perched high above the sprawling facility, Doctor Thomas Giardello parted the blinds and looked out at the magnificence of an African sunset. Even through the thick walls and double glazed windows he fancied he could hear the evening chorus as the local lions started announcing themselves and daring anyone to challenge them. Far off in the distance he spotted the moving specks of a herd of grazing animals, but he couldn’t tell what kind from here. The telescope he’d set up specifically for animal spotting was glanced at, but with a sigh he shook his head and turned away from it. He had way too much paperwork to get through before he could turn in, he’d have to indulge his hobby another day.
Detouring by the tea and coffee station in the corner, he went back to his desk and brought up the latest series of proposals that the different teams had put together for the next round of funding and resource allocations. A slug of rum in his coffee from the concealed drawer in his large wooden desk had become mandatory once he’d taken charge of the proposal acceptance portfolio, and taking a look at the list of titles, Thomas decided two slugs would be appropriate.
Coffee suitably enhanced, he settled back to start reading.
He knew he wasn’t as smart as the scientists submitting these proposals, but he’d been given the role because he was book-smart enough to understand what was going on, people-smart enough to translate things for management and R&D people-smart to be able to work with the scientists and keep management from messing things up for them. “R&D people really are a special breed,” he mused to himself as he finished a proposal on developing active camouflage, decided the idea had legs to it and put it in the ‘go through properly tomorrow’ pile. They really had to be, it took a certain kind of turn of thought and a somewhat loose grip on reality to pull out ideas that at first glance seemed impossible and the dogged determination to bend the rules of science and make them work.
Unfortunately that kind of unfettered thinking came with its own problems.
Thomas got three lines into the next proposal and rejected it with an angry growl. “For heaven’s sake Markus!” he snarled the words out as he typed up his rebuke to the scientist. “How many times do I have to tell you that there are no dissections of ‘the replicant’, I don’t care if he’ll ‘get better’ afterwards, it’s in the FAQs and beyond unethical!”
Some of the teams were quite understandably fascinated with the idea of retrometabolisim and hungered for more than the data that Fawn had sent them and what little they were able to get out of the occasional dead replicant. He regularly fielded quite a number of requests for testing on Captain Scarlet, but only a handful of those requests ever made it up to Fawn for his approval before they were broached to Scarlet.
“I think we’re going to have to run a reminder course on ethics and ethical guidelines in experimentation again,” Thomas grimly concluded as he sipped his coffee. “That’s the third request this year.”
Rubbing the bridge of his nose, Thomas took another gulp of coffee and turned to the next proposal.

Food Crew AU
Yagi and Midoriya are friends.
Midoriya doesn't know that Yagi is All Might.
Quirkless Midoriya AU, so no OFA for him.
No Slime Villain meeting here.
During UA, and whenever they could meet up before, Midoriya has lunch with Yagi.
He makes lunch for the both of them, trying to get Yagi to eat more often.
Midoriya had a partial gastrectomy (lower part of stomach is surgically removed) as a kid, so his diet is similar to Yagi's.
Quirk discussions with each other!
They disagree on if people without quirks can become a hero.
Midoriya's main goal is to still save people with a smile. But he has a secondary goal, that's still important to him, on helping other quirkless people.
And he hopes that proving that quirkless people are able to become heroes will help them be treated better.
Midoriya is in 1A.
Momo, Sato, and Midoriya friendship!

Listen I don’t bleed out of my vag every month anymore but the rest of my cycle still happens because I’ve still got my ovaries, cervix, and all that endometriosis still up in there so here I am, 10 pm on a Saturday, eating chips alone in my pajamas on the couch and desperately craving M&Ms and Dr. Pepper. And all this week I was fully aware what time it was due to the extra thick and slimy cervical discharge screaming HEY! IT’S TIME TO GET PREGNANT BITCH! I’M MAKING IT EASY FOR SPERM AND DICK TO MAKE IT IN HERE! GET A MOVE ON!

because sometimes there are invisible tests and invisible rules and you're just supposed to ... know the rule. someone you thought of as a friend asks you for book recommendations, so you give her a list of like 30 books, each with a brief blurb and why you like it. later, you find out she screenshotted the list and send it out to a group chat with the note: what an absolute freak can you believe this. you saw the responses: emojis where people are rolling over laughing. too much and obsessive and actually kind of creepy in the comments. you thought you'd been doing the right thing. she'd asked, right? an invisible rule: this is what happens when you get too excited.
you aren't supposed to laugh at your own jokes, so you don't, but then you're too serious. you're not supposed to be too loud, but then people say you're too quiet. you aren't supposed to get passionate about things, but then you're shy, boring. you aren't supposed to talk too much, but then people are mad when you're not good at replying.
you fold yourself into a prettier paper crane. since you never know what is "selfish" and what is "charity," you give yourself over, fully. you'd rather be empty and over-generous - you'd rather eat your own boundaries than have even one person believe that you're mean. since you don't know what the thing is that will make them hate you, you simply scrub yourself clean of any form of roughness. if you are perfect and smiling and funny, they can love you. if you are always there for them and never admit what's happening and never mention your past and never make them uncomfortable - you can make up for it. you can earn it.
don't fuck up. they're all testing you, always. they're tolerating you. whatever secret club happened, over a summer somewhere - during some activity you didn't get to attend - everyone else just... figured it out. like they got some kind of award or examination that allowed them to know how-to-be-normal. how to fit. and for the rest of your life, you've been playing catch-up. you've been trying to prove that - haha! you get it! that the joke they're telling, the people they are, the manual they got- yeah, you've totally read it.
if you can just divide yourself in two - the lovable one, and the one that is you - you can do this. you can walk the line. they can laugh and accept you. if you are always-balanced, never burdensome, a delight to have in class, champagne and glittering and never gawky or florescent or god-forbid cringe: you can get away with it.
you stare at your therapist, whom you can make jokes with, and who laughs at your jokes, because you are so fucking good at people-pleasing. you smile at her, and she asks you how you're doing, and you automatically say i'm good, thanks, how are you? while the answer swims somewhere in your little lizard brain:
how long have you been doing this now? mastering the art of your body and mind like you're piloting a puppet. has it worked? what do you mean that all you feel is... just exhausted. pick yourself up, the tightrope has no net. after all, you're cheating, somehow, but nobody seems to know you actually flunked the test. it's working!
aren't you happy yet?

My cat's got little bumps on his ear cartilage on both ears. Not painful as far as I can tell, not inflammed or purulent, not scabby. I just noticed them today and I have no idea where they come from.

POTS Medication Vocabulary
after about the third time a doctor prescribed a medication that made my POTS drastically worse, and about three doctors visits past giving up on being an easy patient, i started asking my doctors the following questions whenever they prescribed a new long term medication:
is this medication a hypotensive? (will this medication lower my blood pressure?)
does this medication have a risk of tachycardia? (can this medication raise my heart rate?)
is this medication a diuretic? (will this medication dehydrate me?)
can this medication cause hyponatremia? (will this medication cause my body to lose salt?)
your doctor likely doesn’t know all of this off the top of their head for every medication, but they should know the most common adverse reactions. some may simply tell you they have no clue. i still think it’s worth asking to force them to consider these mechanisms.
for additional consideration:
your pharmacist likely knows the answers to these questions better than your doctor does.
an additional list of types of drugs which should be avoided is available here, in the table on the fourth page. (note that propranolol, a beta blocker, is often prescribed for POTS but is discouraged by this paper. as someone whose taken it, it’s worth trying to see if it will improve symptoms, but didn’t for me. Additionally, these are just guidelines, and in those with, for example, both hEDS and POTS, the benefits of opiates for pain relief may be worth the risk of worsening POTS.)
regardless of what the doctor says, I always look up the FDA info sheet before taking a medication. these can be found pretty easily on google (your med + “fda pdf”), and list most of the adverse effects. I’m happy to make a post about reading these info sheets.
there’s a reason prescribing medication is left to those with years of medical training - it’s a complicated and difficult process. but oftentimes those who do this work are so overworked and burnt out, they don’t have the ability to read someone’s entire medical file, or be aware of an adverse event that only affects those with an uncommon condition. I find asking these questions forces my doctors to think about my chronic conditions, and after so many adverse events, I always check a medication for myself before taking it.
remember that you can and should refuse to take a medication that is making your life worse or harming you. even pediatric patients have the right to refuse a medication, and often times, I’ve found nothing other than a very firm “no, I refuse” will get a doctor to consider other options. and even though its against the norm, remember that you have the right to ask your doctor why they’ve chosen that medication for you.
as always, feel free to ask questions, they make my day!

tfw a cishet person describes a piece of media as having problematic representations of queerness & you gotta fight the urge to go on a rant about it's nuance in depicting queerness and the reasons why it is so powerful and important for so many queer people and how trying to label any "outdated" or "complicated" versions of queerness as problematic/offensive is just making it more palatable for cishet liberals

i feel like we don't need to keep coining new community terms for "different types" of DID. i think there being so many community terms used now rather than actual medical terms is kinda making things confusing.
i also feel like people forget DID is an actual medical diagnosis and term. you can't fit any and everything under the umbrella of DID because that's just not how it works. words mean things.

I just found out my ADHD meds aren't covered here in BC :( they got me a trial discount last time so it was only $9, but from here on out it's gonna cost me $134 every month and I cannot afford it right now. I only get $1060/mo, and $850 is going to rent alone. it'll be a little easier if/when I get on disability, but it's moving at a glacial pace. we also put ourselves $104 in the overdraft buying groceries yesterday :/
I don't want to ask for help but this is a tight spot. I'm going to run out of meds in 5 days and I don't get paid for another 2 weeks. :/ I'm *just* starting to stabilize on this new med combination and I'm not really wanting to fuck around with suicidality again just because I can't afford it
if you can help out, please stop by my pp or reblog. anything helps ♡♡♡♡♡
thank you so much.
