Elaboration on the Cainhurst Siblings Headcanon
I remember now that my idea for Maria and Bloody Crow being siblings was something just for fun when comparing their in-game designs, connections, and battles, but there was also one of those “Oh shit, FromSoft may be recycling ideas again…” moments too. I mean, they absolutely do and I still feel like this was no coincidence.
Tumblr media
This is from my old post from last year or whatever, but let’s just recap the obvious here…Bloodborne had a lot of prototype ideas for Dark Souls 3, or at least…that’s my guess. They were clearly being developed around the same time, since BB was released in 2015 and DS3 in 2016.
Remember how the alpha version of DS3 and the city of Lothric in particular was all very Bloodbornesque and gothic? They changed it last minute probably because the influence was so obvious. There are other weird connections like this too, and the Maria/Friede similarities are no exception.
If you watch those VS battles on YouTube where we see Maria and Friede’s move-sets, they are undeniably linked. Maria was probably the beta version of Friede in a sense. She technically has three phases, starting with pure dex and swordsmanship, then moving onto the “enhanced” blood phase, and then ending with the full-blown fire and blood chaos.
Friede does the same, except with embers and eventual blackflame. Both of these women also did not want to use those final powerbombs though, because for Maria…it’s a sacrifice of humanity, and for Friede, it’s a sacrifice of the shelter she has created. Her painted world isn’t supposed to see flame.
Friede also seems to have the firstborn daughter syndrome of fearing failure to the point of desperation. She already let Londor down by being unable to usurp the flame, and part of me wonders if her story involved more guilt than is let on. Could she have abandoned Londor for shame? But…why not just keep trying to usurp after being turned to ash? I suspect Friede may have realized that Londor had some pretty questionable agendas and tried to redeem herself in the Painted World.
It’s so similar to Maria watching over the Research Hall patients (despite their misery) out of a desire to make up for what happened at the Hamlet. She is trying to do good, but she also is not helping anyone and still tries to bury the sins of her past. If she’s a parallel to Friede, I also think that’s why it would make so much sense if she were another tormented firstborn daughter with a heavy weight on her shoulders.
That’s when the siblings came in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The design similarities are obvious. The raven/crow aesthetic of Yuria’s helmet is even more blatant than the Cainhurst visor, but Bloody Crow himself makes up for it with his crow-garb. They both ended up looking like armored ravens.
Yuria is dedicated to the place her elder sister abandoned with a noticeable zeal. Londor is her everything. Kaathe is her idol. She’s willing to commit strong acts of cruelty to advance her goals and is undeniably a character with some pretty grey morals.
She evens asks that we kill one of our own friends (Orbeck) in the middle of her questline because apparently he is trying to take Londor’s throne for himself. We ourselves know this definitely isn’t true, but Yuria doesn’t care. Something about this implies she is lying to us just to sneakily get rid of the guy, probably because it’s personal.
So, we have our white-haired raven girl in service to her ostracized people and lord, who is openly manipulating us to complete her goals, and shares some kind of implied rivalry with one of our “friend” characters—sound somewhat familiar? Mayyybe?
Bloody Crow is explained all via context, but apart from his similarity to Yuria in design, he ALSO is oddly familiar to Maria herself. He’s the only hunter besides us that uses what is very likely her bone to quicken, he is implied to be from Cainhurst, but only halfway because of his blended attire/faction (like Maria), and his strength is something you can’t just brush off, which gives him the feel of being a much older hunter from Maria and Gehrman’s generation.
Really, he and Maria are the only Cainhurst hunters we seem to fight in-game that have actual connections to other characters, that stand out as especially powerful beings.
Arianna is no hunter, False Iosefka may have come from Cainhurst but clearly had more association with the the Choir, and that one random Cainhurst knight in the dungeons is…not tied to anything in particular?
Maria and Crow are stand-outs if we’re going by Cainhurst’s legacy, is what I am saying. Besides Annalise, they are seemingly the only remnants of their culture that actually indicate the true strength of their people.
Who else laid claim to such reputation? The Londor sisters.
Both Maria and Friede abandoned their people/homes, devoted themselves to “aiding” others in a secluded haven after a great failure, both became associated with an older male figure that they fight alongside, and both harbor some darker power that they don’t ignite until absolutely necessary.
Yuria and Crow are the dark, raven-warriors with red katanas in service to the lord/queen of the nation their counterparts abandoned, they share rivalries with characters the protagonist is meant to befriend, they wield exceptional strength but not the same level of power as Friede/Maria, and they both seem to have questionable agendas.
In conclusion, I suspect that Maria was the first Friede and Bloody Crow was a prototype for Yuria. Both character concepts were further developed in DS3, and in that case, the siblings theory for Crow/Maria would make sense. Now we just gotta fill in the blanks.
All this overcomplicated drivel to say that I like the idea of Bloody Crow being Maria’s younger, fully-related brother and have for a while now and this is not news to literally anybody lmao.

At long last, after over a year, I have finally finished my catalogue of every single Danhunter from Playframe's Dans Vs DS3 series. Many thanks to the folks on the Playfriends Discord who helped and encouraged me; it would've taken far longer without all of you!

15 Things I Actually Like/Love in Multiverse of Madness
Since yesterday was a certain someone’s birthday, I figured I’d make a post I’ve been sitting on for awhile.
I’ve made no secret of the fact I have mixed opinions about Multiverse of Madness and have gone into great detail about my issues with the film. Hell, I’ll probably have more to say when the “Art of” book comes out in September. But at the same time, there’s a lot that I like or love in MoM so, why not post my musings?
Here we go!
1. Stephen’s Arc - Like I’ve said before, I have issues with how incomplete Stephen’s story feels in this movie, but I do like that he learns to start embracing love in all its forms and is open to being a bit more vulnerable.
2. Stephen & America’s Friendship - Not much to say here; their friendship is very sweet and I wouldn’t be surprised if, when we get to DS3, it’s revealed Stephen adopted America off-screen and she’s now living in the Sanctum with him. Which means he has someone to talk to other than Cloakie.
3. Sinister Strange - Again, not a surprise here if you’ve been following my blog. Yeah, I know not much is given to the character (I wish he’d been the villain if they didn’t wanna go with Nightmare), but he’s wonderfully portrayed and lots of fun to watch. Speaking of which...
4. Music Fight! - Come on! You’ve got two Stephens throwing magic music note projectiles at each other, with the music being Beethoven vs. Bache. How does that not win best fight scene of the movie!? Also, I don’t care how on the nose Sinister’s music selection is. When you’ve all but implied you wanna force yourself on your ex, you’ve pretty much confirmed you’re evil.
5. The Apple Orchard Scene - Call me crazy, but I actually really like the scene on the Apple Orchard and I think it’s one of the better written scenes in the movie. It’s still bogged down by the problems the film’s plot has, but I do think it’s basic structure and dialogue are fine. Not to mention it does a good job showing Stephen’s softness. Plus, Wanda’s hair in a braid is really cute! She should wear it like that more often. Speaking of my boy...
6. How Soft Stephen is in this Movie - People both in and (especially) outside fandom love to act like Stephen’s an arrogant douche and call it a day. And yeah, they’re right; Stephen is a jerk. He’s also a big softie who’s slowly learning to show that softness to others, and I think that NWH and this film, especially, do a good job at conveying he has a heart beneath his snarky demeanor. Mind you, I think that’s Ben’s influence seeping through, not Waldron’s, but my point still stands.
7. Rintrah - Big Himbo Minotaur I’ve been waiting to see on the big screen! Hate that most of his subplot was cut but maybe he’ll get a bigger role in the next one.
8. Clea - I’ve...gushed enough about Clea as it is, so I’ll keep it brief; Holy shit! The rumors about Charlize being Clea were true and we FINALLY have Stephen’s wife in the MCU! Let the epic star-crossed romance begin!!!
9. The Music - I originally wasn’t crazy about Danny Elfman’s score the first time around, but in subsequent viewings, it’s grown on me. My favorite tracks are the main title theme and (of course) Lethal Symphonies.
10. Dead Strange - I mean...you’ve got Stephen puppeting a zombie variant of himself with a cape made of damned souls, doesn’t get more metal/comic bookie than that! Also, I do love watching Sam Raimi rip off himself with the way zombie Stephen rises from the grave like something out of Evil Dead.
11. The Cinematography - I’ve said before I think this is a beautifully shot film and I meant it. Raimi has a good eye for visuals and I love that Marvel allowed him to break from their in-house style, because there’s some really great camerawork in this film! The Evil Dead zoom-ins that are tilted on a Dutch Angle, Wanda coming through the gong ala The Ring, Stephen’s face in his broken watch, the entrance to Sinister’s sanctum, the multiverse scene which is basically one, continuous long take? You can say whatever you want about this film, but you can’t deny that it’s beautifully made.
12. The Parkour Fight - I love it when Stephen uses his brains to defeat his enemies, and this is such an instance.
13. I love you in every universe - I think this one speaks for itself.
14. Donna Strange - Again, I absolutely hate they ignored making this into a plot point (especially when it would’ve so easy to do), but I do love the monologue itself. Not only is well acted, but you can tell from how choked up Stephen is over it that yes, the loss of his sister was and is still very painful for him. I also love Sinister’s response, “But we don’t talk about that, do we?”. It says so much about the wound Donna’s left on her brother’s heart, even after all this time. We needed more nuanced moments like that in this film.
15. Stephen being Extra Pretty - I know I’ve been gushing about since we got the official trailer last winter but my GOD is Stephen beautiful in this movie!!! Yes, he’s always been pretty. But it’s like someone asked Raimi, “So how pretty do you want Stephen to be in this movie?”, and he responded with a resounding, “Yes.” Either way, it only confirms what I’ve been saying for awhile now; Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange is FUCKING HOT!!!
There! I listed fifteen things I like/love in this movie. Do with it what you will!
P.S. Also, I’m not listing Armani Strange as a separate item because it still technically counts as being part of Number 15.

Can I share my Dark Souls breaking point? I did the Smouldering Lake part with the old demon king (not an important part of the game but I wanted to get everything). That stupid fight took up 20 embers and never got through it. I followed all the advice to use the great soul arrow and hit him with it. YOU CAN'T. You can't get close enough for long enough to do enough damage. Even when you have a buddy he's not distracting enough. I was done after that.
This reminds me of one aspect of these games that I find to be total lies: the talismans. They're supposed to help with certain things, give strength, poise, whatever. I remember in DS3 you could get a talisman for gaining more drops? That ugly box with the tongue and teeth that slowly killed you while you wore it? There was a ring too. I compared the amount of drops wearing those things vs. not wearing them and there was no difference. None (quick note: it does double your money but not the object drops).

maybe this is a controversial opinion but like .. i think dancer is a better boss than pontiff sulyvahn. i don’t think sulyvahn was a bad boss by any means, but it got to the point where i couldn’t enjoy him as much as id hav liked to cause with his clone present he was jst a flurry of sword swings. it’s more personal taste for me, tho i am genuinely surprised that my favourite ds3 boss at the minute is dancer. usually i am a fiend for bosses that r just me vs some other guy, and i usually dislike large/beast bosses at best, but dancer jst fuckin ticked all the boxes for me. and when she set the whole room on fire ?? ooh girl she took me to church alright, unfortunately the church she took me to was notre-dame in april of 2019

Darkmoon Blade Malachi and Warrior of Sunlight Arun.
I decided to put Lothric's hood on the sunset armor for my strength/faith build and then I realized it paralleled the outfit of my dex/faith build, Lorian's helm on Sirris' set which creates a very Gwyndolin look. Opposite outfits, opposite covenants, opposite types of faith builds...so I started shipping them because there's no fandom drama when you ship your own characters.

now that luca has me thinking about it (hi luca) i do think ds1 and ds2 are the souls games that handled npc permadeath vs character revival the best in terms of not breaking immersion, ds1 doing it Best in comparison because of how little npc death there is in ds2 as its not trying to do the same things theme wise with its characters, and then rated worst are probably ds3 and elden ring. ds3s i think is a bit of a mess to try and wrap the head around but isnt too bad, youre ash and undead and different from others who all are not ash and mostly off themselves to avoid going hollow once theyve done their lifes wishes, and then i think bloodborne on its own handles it Fantastically with the dream and that every hunter gets their chance to revive over and over for a hunt and the dreams revival system is a known fact in universe that others reference. elden ring is like. idk. maybe merika likes you? get up bitch. fuck them other tarnished ig

finally beat all the ds3 bosses solo the other day so here’s a buncha shitty cell phone pics i sent to my friend to brag
build was a regen faith build 44/40 VIG/END, 28/16 STR/DEX, 60 FAITH. rings were Sun Princess, FAP, Havel, and Chloranthy (all +3 for Midir/Gael). i used Blessed Lothric Knight Greatsword for Soul of Cinder, with Ancient Dragon Greatshield offhand, Sunlight Straight Sword + ADGS vs Nameless King, and the Blessed Dragonslayer Axe/Ethereal Oak Shield you see in the pics vs everyone else.
here’s my review of the 5 hardest bosses:
1. Soul of Cinder: 9/10
fun fight, the super varied movesets were really thematic. loses a point cos if you aren’t familiar with previous games’ lore this is kind of an “okay i guess there had to be a final boss” type of fight. like great gameplay but Cindy has 0 story build-up in ds3
2. Nameless King: -100/10 first phase, 7/10 second phase
overhyped garbage fight. hate playing camera souls phase 1, hate that you’re encouraged to bring lightning for the drake’s weakness and then punished for it phase 2, and i hate his janky stab-grab hitbox.
“he’s got a super varied moveset” okay but he doesn’t if you do the typical “suck dick and smack booty” ds3 boss strategy; the fight is just swing swing punish for 2 minutes straight. don’t get me wrong i love ds3 gameplay and i’m here for that but the way ppl talk about NK i was expecting something better than a trashfire phase 1 followed by a phase 2 that is IMO subpar when compared to Dragonslayer Armor or Cindy for “big dude with sword” fights.
i won’t be fighting NK on any NG+s i think. phase 1 is that unfun, so it’s probably a 1/character fight to get his sick fashion and maybe that swordspear
3. Sister Friede: 9/10
first phase is fun as hell once you get the hang of it, phase 2 is a bit meh and really why she isn’t 10/10, phase 3 is terrifying and so satisfying to beat. not much to say here. Friede and Cindy are both very nearly that platonic dark souls ideal of a boss that feels impossibly hard until you learn their moves and realize how fair (yet challenging) the fight is.
4. Midir: 10/10 potential, 7/10 practical
i love midir’s moveset and he’s the dragon fight of my dreams. you know how a lot of video games do dragon fights but they don’t do a good job of actually showcasing what it’s like to fight a five-storey tall crocodile that can breathe fire and fly? midir falls (omg spoiler) a lil short on the flying department but nails everything else.
the thing is, he’s a health sponge. this’d be my favourite fight in the game if he had about 2000 less HP but as is, he’s a bit too much of an endurance fight. which takes away from the sheer terror of a well done dragon - there should be more of an element of “take him down fast or die”. endurance fight removes that tension and makes it more of a “somersaulting arsehole teases animal for ten minutes before delivering a brutal headshot” kind of tone. midir also gives a surprising amount of space for you to heal for a battle that’s considered the hardest in the game, which removes the tension of an endurance fight - you’re not outlasting a series of deadly combos, you’re using your own massive HP pool to marathon 200 hits into midir’s noggin
5. Gael: 6/10
i’m probably never going to fight gael again but he does score a lot of points for
a) having each phase be more of an awe-inspiring “oh shit oh fuck” moment than the last
b) making me nearly piss myself when i passed through the fog gate for the first time and was like “huh this a weird spot for the gate” and then see him just fucking sprinting at me
c) literally saying “it’s always darkest before the soul!” like what a fucking funny line for the final boss of the series
anyways he’s got the same issue as midir where it’s a sastisfyingly difficult fight made frustratingly much harder by an inflated HP pool. even once i got phase 1 & 2 relatively down, he was such a slog that my mistakes would just pile up for phase 3. i know i don’t have this complaint for Friede who has a similar size HP pool but she’s not an endurance slog - she can get combo’d down fast phase 1, and phase 2 is so full of free hits that she’s effectively 5000 HP less than her written total. you don’t spend the entire fight dodging around being like “okay… where’s my one hit opening…” which is fun to do sometimes! just not for the entirety of an extremely long fight
outside of HP bloat, teleporting into phase 2 feels janky and basically having to use the pillars to create space for estus and buffs reduces an epic fight into cheesy videogame moments. i also literally did not realize that his cape hurts you because that makes no fucking sense. i thought he just had janky hit boxes until i looked up a video on how to beat him
fun as hell game overall tho time to finish my pyro, sorc, and ranger playthroughs

Me vs technology
So, a week-or-so ago, I finally started up my PS4 again. Having not done so for like... months, it obviously had some updates it wanted to do. Whatever, it’s easier to let it do those than trying to fight it over them.
Immediately upon finishing the update, the screen goes black. The PS4 keeps chugging along, but the screen says that no video is being detected.
After a lot of fighting it, I discovered that if I unplugged the HDMI-cable from the HDMI-switch that I have and plugged it directly into the TV, suddenly it starts working again.
This has literally never been a problem before, but I play the PS4 so rarely that I don’t want to make it more difficult for myself by trying to rearrange cables whenever I wanted to switch from the computer to the PS4. So, instead I put the PS4 into storage, and pull out the PS3.
The PS3 works just fine, and has no complaints about the HDMI-switch.
Today, I fnally managed to track down that Sony uses some weird DRM through their HDMI-cables to make super-sure that nobody does something to their games (how the fuck anyone would do anything at all to a game through a fucking HDMI-port I don’t know), and that lots of people with HDMI-switches have had issues over the years.
So, that was a thing. And I guess I’m not ever going to finish DS3, and will probably never poke at Bloodborne again. Yay.

✨ soulsborne !
✨ what draws you towards your hyperfixation? what is interesting about it?
I JUST THINK TIS SO NEAT. like ive been into it for like . 2 fucking years now and something about the lore and characters just keeps me into it i just ... i love it so much.
each game is so dense and fun to play and think about like. i could write paper upon paper about the themes of rebirth and cycles and dark vs light and the inherent beauty of the world but i WONT ill just keep making weird lists and forcing people to look at how i MATHEMATICALLY PROVED PATCHES IS A HUNK. also i like how each game has its own takes on the main central theme of the series of cycles and the inevitability of it all like demons taking place the SECOND time the old one was awoken, or ds1s world being on the verge of collapse even after gwyn sacrificed it all, or ds2 jumping off of that and having you explore a dead world thats been killed and reborn over and over or ds3 having the world collapsing in on itself after being kept alive after so long and bloodborne. b. being bloodborne. im going to admit i dont know everything about bb lore but it looks cool so it can stay

if there’s one thing i greatly dislike in DS3, it’s the huge host advantage during an invasion in terms of numbers. granted, i’m not really a 1v1 duel me bro kinda guy in invasions, i’m there to be a specter of pain and torment for you. i’ll use every cheap trick in the book and write a couple more in.
however, it gets pretty ridiculous when you have what, 3 summoned phantoms with a dried finger? and way of the blue on? and i’m lucky to get another red invader (that also takes damage from my swings and spells so we have to actually play carefully, vs Straight Sword Squad Sixty-Nine (Nice) that can just swing away with abandon) and it ends up being a 4v2 or a 4v1 98% of the time.
sure, there’s enemies to take advantage of...sometimes. sometimes a host won’t chase, won’t advance, or it simply doesn’t matter as his infinite army of resummonable phantoms clears all the trash for him.
i hate it, but it does give me an immense sense of satisfaction when i completely overcome those odds and decimate a host.
i was invading in the ringed city inner wall on my INT/FTH build (we got sorceries, we got miracles, we got pyromancies, we got all dogs go to heaven) and i came upon this dude named Ash. i’m all “yeah you’re bout to be ash if ya catch my drift, baybee” because i’m pretty decent. usually.
insert his two gold phantoms and one white phantom barreling through the hallways just slashing away like madmen at the turtle clerics. my materia starts getting nervous around this time, so i pull out my crusty, trusty crystal chime and fuck off to the swamp area. a few casts of Chameleon later, i’m a very attractive crystal cluster. lucky me.
they get down to the swamps about five minutes later and i just. watch. they run right past me, even almost whinging me with a stray strike as they take out the little feasting fleabags. i remain cool as a cucumber though, and they move on.
so naturally, i scuttle my little crystal cluster around to the other banks of crystals, taking care to blend in. they hit the mostly intact building over to the left, clear some more trash.
it’s been about 20 minutes at this time. a lesser me would have charged in, died, and invaded someone else. i am not a lesser me. usually.
they finally approach the ruined cathedral and i notice that Mr. Ash Himself is just a bit back from the rest of the group. at this point i’m about 10 feet away, still in the swamp, still disguised. he’s providing support with crystal spears.
big mistake.
computer, play “creepin’ up the backstairs” by the fratellis.
thank you.
all it took was one backstab and one onyx blade R2 and i held sweet, sweet victory. crushing all their effort in two blows spaced five seconds apart felt oddly satisfying.
so yeah. i hate the 4v1s i get into most times, but sometimes...well, sometimes a little magic happens. that magic’s name is Chameleon.
