Welcome Back! Can you make a headcanon where the reader is Song Lan's lover and she gives her eyes to him instead of XXC?
hi hi!
i’ve been having some writer’s block these days; the bane of my writing life.
but your request though... angsty angsty
let’s give it a try
.・゜-: ✧ :-  -: ✧ :-゜・.
Song Lan’s breath stutters in between his lips, at the sight of you
you were unharmed,
you were alive
you were blind
Song Lan takes in a shakey breath, as he quietly watches you gather up the spilled ingredients from your basket
you feel a lot of the cobblestone street, more than the apples and turnips that you are supposed to be picking up
nobody else is helping you on the street, the most that they can spare is making some space for your hands or kicking an apple closer
Song Lan stands about a minute of this, before he is in front of you, and helping you
he gathers everything with you to rearrange in your basket
all the while you both are quiet in the busy ambiance of the market backdrop
everything is gathered quicker with his help, and after your hands pat and count the vegetables that you have brought you stand up in front of him,
this close to him, Song Lan’s eyes take in your full appearance, after so many months of being apart
you hair still shining and smooth, but longer than the last time he had seen you
your robes, still kept and clean, but obviously more travel worn, with the way the sun-dried fabric sticks out awkwardly at some places,
your white cloth, clean, clear, wrapped around your head
“thank you,” your clear voice is still the same, still so soft, still you
Song Lan had traveled and looked for you all these months
turned the cultivation world upside down, inside out just to see you again
he has so much that he wants to say, to ask, to tell you
but the guilt for your blindness swallows up all the words that he had prepared for this reunion
Song Lan can’t help but reach out to you, his hand slowly moving up just on the cusp of cupping your face
but because the silence after your answer had been long, you figured that your savior had left and turn away just before his hand reaches you
Song Lan is not hurt, as much as he is saddened
because it was not your fault that you could not see him, see the world
it was all his
as Song Lan watches you grow smaller and smaller into the rest of the marketplace,
he lets a single, lonely, tear fall from his eyes
eyes that should have. been yours

This is for Day 6 of Xichengclipse and there is a disclaimer or two. Firstly, this is angst, with Major Character Death (but eventual happy ending).
Secondly, this is a little different to anything I've written for MDZS before. In this story I've gone with calling the character name of the legend they're associated with for the fic.
Wen Qing is Chang'e the moon goddess,
Lan Xichen is Yu Tu (the moon/jade rabbit - more below)
Jiang Cheng is Jiu Wei Hu (the nine-tailed fox - more below)
I did a little reading for this prompt and ended up cherrypicking some parts of various legends and mythology surrounding the nine tailed foxes, and Chang'e, and Yue Tu, her rabbit companion, and mashing them all up together with a big dose of my headcanon.
I read that Yue Tu 月兔 (Moon Rabbit) is also referred to as 玉兔 Yu Tu (Jade Rabbit) so of course our first jade LXC became Yu Tu for this fic.
The nine tailed foxes, 九尾狐, Jiu Wei Hu became JC's name as a fox demon. The legend of them achieving immortality at 1000 years old, being able to cure poison by eating their flesh, and their location, are all lifted from various writings on these little scamps, but the flowers Chang'e sends Yu Tu after are pure headcanon.
Nine Petals On A Flower Signify Pearls
A city suffers plague, and Chang'e sends her trusted companion Yu Tu to find a fabled flower of legend that can cure the incurable.
Yu Tu leaves the moon to search for the cure, but stumbles upon a nine-tailed fox, wounded by mortals after an attempt to capture him. Might the fox know the answer to where the flowers are located?
For day 6 of Xichengclipse, featuring LXC as the fabled moon rabbit and JC as a nine-tailed fox.
Chang’e came to see him that morning, bringing with her a sense of purpose, and her ever present sadness. She was known better on the earth below them as the moon goddess who had stolen the potion of immortality from Hou Yi, the hero archer.
In reality she had seen what a burden immortality was, and rescued her brother from having to live an eternity of struggling on alone, at the cost of her own suffering.
Yu Tu, the jade rabbit who had ascended to the moon with her, known as her ever-present companion, was aware she would have a definite reason for visiting, so he shifted to human form and made tea.
They sat in companionable silence for a little while, before Chang’e brought up the reason for her visit.
“I worry about a city below, Yu Tu, it appears they are undergoing pestilence. The healers do not seem to have any medicines that counteract the poisons brought by the plague.”
Her tone suggested she knew of a cure, so he kept his counsel, allowing her to continue at her own pace.
“When I was mortal, I heard tell of a legend, that many li north of Tianwu, there was a land of verdant hills. There was one where nine-petalled flowers grew amidst scattered jade and cinnabar, and bore pearls of whitest sheen, instead of seeds. These pearls could cure what could not be cured.”
Yu Tu understood her intent immediately.
“I will prepare to depart immediately, My Lady.” he rose, and bowed low to her.
“You are willing to chase a rumour and a legend, brought up from my imperfect memory of a time long ago, when I was a human?”
“My Lady seeks to heal, as ever. I will not fail you.”
“Thank you”
***
Within a short time Yu Tu had descended and was searching for the land of legend, where the pearl Chang’e had referred to was to be discovered.
He travelled north of Tianwu, and discovered a land of many hills. It was verdant, with the soft feel of early spring, where the world was waking up from its winter sleep again. He searched the hills, but found none where jade and cinnabar were scattered far and wide, in beds of white flowers. He wandered even further north, until he eventually came across a mountainside that was wreathed in mist. Making his way into the misted foothills he began to pass strewn jade, and red staining cinnabar and his excitement grew. There were no white flowers to be seen, however.
Yu Tu continued to walk up the hillside, hoping that the flowers were merely higher up, hidden in the mist-covering.
He was surprised at the sudden report of an animal in pain, it cried out, intermingled with rage and a feral warning. He drew Shuoyue, the sword Chang’e had gifted him with for his quests on earth, and approached the direction the noise had come from cautiously.
He soon found the source. A group of mortal humans held ropes that jerked and pulled about this way and that, and Yu Tu followed the length of them, to identify that they were attached to a Nine-tailed fox, they cut into his flesh, and he howled and hissed and spat at the men as they tried to subdue him, but he refused to give in.
“Try not to damage him, we should get good coin for him alive.”
Yu Tu didn’t need to hear anything further, he shot forward and sliced at the ropes with Shuoyue.
He had the element of surprise, and an armed opponent seemed to send a quiver of fear through the humans, who scattered before his sword, running without putting up much of a battle.
When he was sure they had fled, he turned to the fox, who had ripped the bindings free of his body, and rose to his full height, now in human form, violet eyes blazing with his anger and pain.
His tails, snow-white except where they were limned with violet at their very tips, swirled around him in an understandable mixture of fear and excitement. He was confronted with what was essentially a rabbit with a sword, and the predator in him reacted almost as strongly as the reasoning side that saw the danger, and understood that Yu Tu had saved him.
Yu Tu didn’t pay it too much attention, or it might have had a stronger hold on him, but there was a part of himself that panicked at the sight of a fox, all sharp, vulpine features and sharper teeth.
Whatever might have happened, didn’t, however, as the fox fell into a dead faint at his feet.
Yu Tu moved over, tentatively at first, in case it was merely a ploy to take him off guard, but he soon realised it was genuine. He quickly rolled the fox onto his back, and began to check his wounds. There were several deep cuts, and he had lost quite a lot of blood. He bandaged up the worst, with pieces torn from his robes, then lifted the other into his arms. He had to take them to somewhere enclosed, safer for the fox.
Some searching further up the mountainside revealed a cave which seemed to be where the fox made his den.
He lay him out on the nest that had been built in one corner of the cave, away from the drafts, and went to collect water from the stream nearby.
He spent a little time cleaning and bandaging up the rest of the fox’s wounds, then tenderly cleaning his sharply handsome face.
Handsome? Yu Tu examined that thought. Objectively yes, he was. Should a rabbit find a fox handsome? Perhaps not.
He ran a thumb gently over the other’s finely arched eyebrow, then over the sharp jut of his cheekbone.
He pulled his hand away, then rose to his feet.
Yu Tu considered his next move. He had done what he could for the fox, and he should get on with looking for what he had come for. Although, he had kept look out on his way to the den, and had seen no white flowers with pearls instead of seed pods.
He went to stand by the cave mouth.
He really should move on. Even if the cure wasn’t here, there had to be other hillsides where the flowers could be found.
He trusted Chang’e hadn’t been wrong about this, and he would find the cure. People’s lives were depending on it.
But he still couldn’t bring himself to step foot out of the fox’s den just yet.
He moved back to sit next to his nest. He couldn’t keep calling him just the fox, so he decided he would be Jiu Wei Hu as a name, and not just a creature.
***
It was the next day before Jiu Wei Hu awoke from his sleep. He immediately scented the rabbit in his territory, and tried to sit up.
Yu Tu made a soothing noise, and pinned him down with a gentle hand at his shoulder.
“Be still, or you will pull open your wounds,” he advised calmly, and those violet, fox-eyes found his amber coloured ones.
“You saved me,” his voice was low, deep, and rough, as if it wasn’t used often.
“I did, and helped heal you, you still need to aid it with rest, though.”
The muscles beneath his hand relaxed.
“Why?”
“Why not? If I see humans planning to sell a creature for profit, should I not help? And I am a healer, how could I not heal your injuries?”
Jiu Wei Hu considered his words, and seemed to find them sensible; he nodded.
“Thank you.”
Silence.
Then; “What brings you here, immortal moon rabbit?”
Yu Tu watched him carefully. How had he known? Was he in danger?
“I am nearly a thousand years old, yet I know of only one rabbit healer who can become human and move around in the world of mortals.”
At his words Yu Tu tensed. He was nearly a thousand years old? Were the legends of what happened to a nine-tailed fox in his thousandth year true?
There was an amused laugh rumble in Jiu Wei Hu’s chest.
“You are quite easy to read, Yu Tu. To answer your question, I am the only nine tailed fox left here, so I cannot know for sure. But I shall soon find out, thanks to you. I shall enter my thousandth year in three days. Perhaps I will ascend and become a celestial fox. Perhaps I will stay here and be a very old fox demon.” There was a burning excitement in his eyes. Despite he words he genuinely did believe his destiny was to ascend the heavens as a celestial.
“Before I do, if I do, how would you have me help you, in return for saving my life?” Jiu Wei Hu asked.
Yu Tu should perhaps be cautious, a nine-tailed fox demon was a likely to bamboozle as help, their nature was cunning and sly and mercurial.
He wanted to believe the other was genuine, however.
“Chang’e talked of a white flower, with nine petals, that bloomed and bore pearls instead of seed pods. These gems are meant to cure the incurable. I came in search of them, to stop a plague. So far I’ve seen no sign of anything of the kind. Perhaps you know of what she speaks, living in this place?”
There was a sudden, barking laugh come from the other, and though it seems to aggravate his wounds he laughed for quite a while, as if unable to stop. Then he sat up, despite Yu Tu’s warnings, and changed back into his fox form.
He was pure white, and sleek, with nine fine, bushy tails weaving in the air behind him.
Yu Tu was a little confused at first, but realisation dawned, and his heart sank.
Jiu Wei Hu returned to his human form, with a rueful look on his face.
“I am the flower you are looking for, Yu Tu. A taste of my flesh is said to cure poison,” Jiu Wei Hu watched Yu Tu carefully then, consideringly. “Are you still willing to help and heal me knowing this?”
Although he was bitterly disappointed in his failure, of course he was. Jiu Wei Hu was a living thing, deserving of his healing skills too.
“Of course,” he answered, instantly and firmly.
Jiu Wei Hu watched him for a while longer, before seeming to accept his words. He settled back into his nest.
His patient woke frequently throughout the night, and Yu Tu stayed by his side. They talked when he did. The fox was quite thorny and kept much close to his chest, but listened carefully when Yu Tu spoke of his duties as a healer, his life with Chang’e, and the same before he had ascended to the moon with her.
He did speak briefly on his past, but never in detail; he was a proud, haughty fox, who had a wicked sense of humour, and a lightning fast temper, as Yu Tu discovered.
As the night progressed, Yu Tu began to think more and more on the subject of the other becoming a celestial fox, and secretly he began to hope the legend was true. Should the other ascend, there would be opportunity to spend time together, to get to know each other.
Even if the legend wasn’t true, he could prostrate himself and beg some of her elixir of immortality from Chang’e. Having the other as a companion to spend eternity with; well it wouldn’t be dull.
He would tell the other tomorrow, and they could return to Chang’e and let her know the pearls didn’t exist, and try to work on another cure.
He was drifting on the edge of sleep just before dawn, when the sudden sound at the mouth of the cave made him jerk awake. He reached for Shuoyue, but it was too late, and he felt the demon binding ropes the humans had used on Jiu Wei Hu tighten around his neck and wrists. Why had he not expected them not to track him to the fox’s den? He was likely about to pay for his stupidity with his freedom.
There was a sudden, explosive growl from the nest, as Jiu Wei Hu awoke, and slipped out of the ropes beginning to close around him. He leaped forward, claws and fangs flashing in the meagre light filtering in from outside.
“You will not touch him,” he snarled, and tore through the group of slavers. He was deadly and beautiful, vicious and unforgiving, and soon the cave was strewn with bodies and blood.
He turned to look at Yu Tu, “Are you hurt?” his chest heaved, and he started forward, then checked himself as he realised he was covered in gore and blood.
Yu Tu saw the movement too late to warn, and the sudden appearance of the end of a sword through the front of Jiu Wei Hu’s chest made him cry out in horror. Yu Tu ragged himself free of the ropes, and shot forward, beheading the leader, who had kept himself hidden, in a single sweep of Shuoyue.
He dropped his sword, then caught Jiu Wei Hu as he fell forward.
Yu Tu wrapped his arms around his shoulders, holding him in his lap.
He hated that he was a healer and he knew there was nothing he could do to save him against that wound.
Jiu Wei Hu looked up at him, a rueful expression in his violet eyes again, “I suppose we won’t find out if the legends of the nine-tailed foxes were true.”
“Please…” he didn’t know what he begged for, the other not to make light of it? Not to die? Not to leave him when he had only just found him? He cupped that sharply angled face in a hand, “I wanted you to stay with me. Why did you sacrifice yourself for me?”
A soft expression passed across the fox’s face. “Because Chang’e needs you, you told me so yourself. Maybe you’ll meet me again in my next life.” He coughed, and it was full of blood, “Use my essence to cure the city of plague, you may as well accomplish what you came here for.”
The words broke the dam and he felt a tear escape the corner of his eye and roll down his face. It dropped onto the other’s lashes and held there as they drifted close. They didn’t open again.
He wasn’t sure for how long he sat on the cave floor, numb, holding on to Jiu Wei Hu’s body, but he knew eventually he had to offer some form of funerary rites. No matter what the fox had offered, he couldn’t bear the thought of using his flesh for any reason.
He lowered Jiu Wei Hu’s head carefully to the cave floor, and went in search of something he might dig a grave with. When he returned, there was no sign of the fox’s body. There was half a minute when he was prepared to scream and rage his agony at someone daring to steal it, when he noticed the small, white pearl nestled on the ground.
The legend Chang’e had heard hadn’t been entirely wrong, after all, the nine-petalled flower had just been of a particularly thorny genus.
He lifted the pearl up, gently, reverently. He wasn’t sure whether he could bear to allow the use of this pearl anymore than he could have Jiu Wei Hu’s body. But perhaps he might reconcile himself to the fact as he made his way back to Chang’e’s side.
***
Present Day
Chang’e came to see him that morning. She carried a small vial of elixir and placed it on the table next to the tea cups.
“You felt his soul stirring, then?”
Yu Tu nodded. He intended to descend and search for his Jiu Wei Hu. He wasn’t entirely sure how he would find one mortal in a sea of them, but he would search forever, if he had to. He had already waited this long.
“Thank you, Chang’e,” he said as he picked the elixir up and tucked it into his sleeve.
“It’s the least I can offer as thanks for what your Jiu Wei Hu sacrificed,” she said simply, and they finished their tea in companionable silence.
***
Yu Tu didn’t expect to stumble upon Jiu Wei Hu instantly, not in a city of millions. He wasn’t too discouraged, therefore, after several hours of searching turned up nothing. He had a strong impression the fox’s soul was in the general area, so he would concentrate himself here. In the meantime he needed to take a break and study the map for large gathering areas where he might find the other.
He stopped at a tea house, and ordered tea and his favoured mooncakes, spreading his map on the table as he waited for his order, to study.
There was a museum nearby, and a university campus. They were good places to start, where people came and went.
He looked up as the waiter brought over a tray with his order, and jerked out a hand automatically, his heart stopping dead in his chest. His movement had accidentally knocked the tray out of the waiters hands, and everything went smashing to the floor, drawing the attention of the entire patronage of the teahouse.
“I’m so incredibly sorry.” Yu Tu said carefully, and the young man looked at him with his fiery brown eyes, a flash of irritation crossing his sharply fox-like face. He quickly tamped it down though and settled it into something closer to a rueful smile. Yu Tu’s stomach dropped in reaction. He had seen that expression on that face so many times that night in the cave.
“It’s fine. Please be careful while I clear this up, sir, or you might cut yourself.” The young man, Jiang Cheng according to the tag on his uniform shirt, said, and he bent to begin picking up the shards of pottery and smashed mooncakes, and placing them on the tray. Yu Tu got up and bent to help.
“You don’t need to, sir, leave it to me.” There was a slight touch of exasperation in his voice, and Yu Tu smiled widely, this reincarnation of Jiu Wei Hu’s soul kept all the other’s irritability.
Jiang Cheng looked at him like he was a lunatic, which, considering he had virtually knocked the tray out of his hands, and now grinned like a fool, wasn’t unexpected.
“Are you feeling alright, sir?” Jiang Cheng asked, doubt in his voice.
“I’m feeling wonderful, thank you.”
Honestly so-so about the execution. The idea probably deserved more words than I wrote it as.

Hi! It's CC! I liked CQL very much, as a cheap idol show, full of plotholes but made with care. They moved things around to make nods to the novel, but devoid of context so sometimes CQL just… doesn't make any sense. But they had to create new scenes which were uniquely CQL and could work only with CQL characterization, and these were good (particularly Lan Zhan in the rain at Qiongqi Path…). While the novel is well-plotted, solid and very well written (less obvious in translation). 1/n
The donghua meanwhile followed the novel more closely in season 1, except for Jiang Cheng's characterization, while I'm not sure I understood everything in season 2 ^^. I can't wait for season 3! Hyped for Yi City! Have you thought of listening to the MDZS audiodrama? There are English fansubs! (so you can stay with the boys a little longer :) ). I hope you have a very good day, *hug*
Heyyy CC!!
I agree with everything you've said! As the donghua isn’t completed yet, I can hardly comment on it, but I'm also excited for the Yi City arch! I think Yi City was my favorite side story in MDZS. It was written so well and I can't wait to see how the animation plays out (especially the part where Xue Yang points his sword at A-qing. They can make it look so badass like!! 😍😍😍) and yeah Jiang Cheng did seem off in the donghua as well, but I'm hoping they will pull him through at the end. But nothing beats the novel, that's for sure! 😁
And no, I haven’t started listening to the audiodrama yet. But I did grace my ears with the part where they acted out the scene in Phoenix mountain... And let me tell you...my asexual ass was shook! 👀👀 I mean, after watching CQL and then reading the novel, I already did have a clear visual in terms of characters while reading, but the audio drama...well hot damn!! It just made everything inside my head go HD, if you know what I mean! 😂😂 Voices can really elevate visuals to a whole new level. I can't wait to start listening 😂 What about you?? Have you listened to it? If you did, did you like it??
(Also, you may see a lack of MDZS posts in my current blog. This is because I finally grew a head and decided to shift all my screaming to a sideblog so I don’t piss others off 😂😂 so all my MDZS related crying will be done at @whywangxian from now on!)
Hope you are doing well, love! Sending hugs! 💙💙

sword fight - yi city character hcs
dueling with the yi city characters
. ⋅ ˚̣- : ✧ : – ⭒ ⊹ ⭒ – : ✧ : -˚̣⋅ .
Xiao Xingchen
a very offense type of fighter,
i also get the feeling that he would be fighting out of necessity more often than not
if he was pushed to fight, he would but he wouldn’t engage
which is why when you’re fighting with him now, swords drawn and clashing against one another
you’re quite irked
because this dude was blind
and you had snuck up on him
because you’re a trouble maker aha
and he was still
serving you like a fresh meal
Xingchen would probably fight in a gentle coaxing sort of style, meant to get someone to lower and abandon their guard
the type of guy to fight to tire the opponent out or catch them not the type of person to kill
a rare personality in the cultivation world
which is why when he sword stops a millimeter to your neck
you’re surprised that he doesn’t go all the way
“you’ve fought me unfairly,” Xingchen tells you, the mention of how you had snuck on him before
you take a deep breath, not fearing death when it was you that had been wrong
you asked for your fate
but you widen your eyes as Xingchen lowers his sword to his side
then turns away and leaves you
it surprises you,
makes you curious
that such kindness was still found in the world
so you follow him
. ⋅ ˚̣- : ✧ : – ⭒ ⊹ ⭒ – : ✧ : -˚̣⋅ .
Xue Yang
engaging him in a fight would be easy because i feel like this dude’s always looking for a fight
hella agressive
really annoying
but when you fight with him,
you learn a lot
even though sometimes it feels like your life is a little bit in danger
considering how he really holds nothing back
ever
even when you’ve known him passively, for like going on a year now
he still doesn’t hold back
so today when you’re dueling with him on the outskirts of the town
and get a slash on your shoulder,
it surprises you
because you can’t tell if he had meant to or not
you stumble back, dropping your sword as your other hand goes up to clutch your shoulder
you hiss out a noise of annoyance more than pain,
these had been your just cleaned robes damn,
and the cut is shallow enough
you’re too busy turning away to go back home to notice the way that Xue Yang is looking at you
or how he,
for the first time
feels guilty by the red that’s dotted on the edge of his blade
. ⋅ ˚̣- : ✧ : – ⭒ ⊹ ⭒ – : ✧ : -˚̣⋅ .
Song Lan
he’s also quite aggressive, i feel like
my opinions come from the 3 times that I’ve watched the live action (lmao)
anyhow
he’s not looking for a fight any time obviously,
but i feel like he’s a bit easier than Xingchen to push the wrong buttons on
Song Lan fights like the name that he is given,
his actions are tactile, precise, harsh
he has a lot of strength that manifests itself in the way that his sword moves and cuts
fighting with him,
you learn a lot of defense, because he’s the opposite of your style
and in a weird way
fighting with him makes you feel like you both belong together
because your fighting styles don’t tire one another out
and even though it is just one single fight with him that you’ve ever had
you remember it
you don’t know if he does too
but the cold snow that he brings with the aim of his blade
stays with you like frost in midwinter
and (if you were ever curious)
your bright, vibrant, style of fighting
swift and sweeping movements of your jumps
is the sunlight that melts
just the smallest bit
of his coldness
. ⋅ ˚̣- : ✧ : – ⭒ ⊹ ⭒ – : ✧ : -˚̣⋅ .
*bonus, A-Qing*
i feel like this child would legitimately hurt you even though she actually only has like a bamboo stick
like sue me, she works a mean bamboo stick
she’d play pretty dirty
because alongside her opponents usually assuming that she’s blind
she’d use her bamboo stick to aim for their shins
or any place where she sees open skin
because bamboo on skin
hurts
when you and her are dueling, it’s more so you using the handle of your sword to stop her sneaky hands from taking an extra bun or satchel from the stands at the marketplace when walking with Xingchen
the child pouts a lot at you for that
Xingchen beside you, though he doesn’t see
laughs cause he knows quite well what’s happening
“jie!” A-Qing had taken to calling you
and you simply smile
“use your stealth for some good, A-Qing,” you tell her
and as you’re walking back to the Coffin home on the way from the marketplace,
you realize that maybe it would be a good idea
to teach A-Qing how to fight properly
that way she can use all of her little skills
for something better

always yours - yi city mdzs characters hcs
the last of the best friend series head canons!
this is a modern version (stay tuned for a different version (v^ー°) )
»»——⍟——««
Xiao Xingchen
stepping into high school, you’ve always felt out of your depth
both from the pressure of moving to a new town and entering another stage of education in your life
it was kind of intimidating
mildly stressful
and you know it shouldn’t be much of a bother to try and fit in and find your crowd
because good things take time (as your parents have reminded you)
and that you were such a lovable person, so
who wouldn’t want to be your friend?
but it still didn’t change the fact that it was hard, nonetheless
luckily, when you’re kind of floating about in between the crowds of people and laughter in the first lunch of your first year, see an empty seat for you to snag
considering how crowded the lunch room was, you feel quite proud of yourself
so you sit down at the spot without a second thought
not even realizing that the seat in front of your empty one was occupied
you’re digging heartily, halfway through your sandwich, when you realize that someone is looking at you
and that’s when you meet Xingchen, immediately humored by your enthusiasm with food
definitely not one of your best first impressions
but it’s surely something that sticks
because aside from finding out that you both are in the same grade, you both have a plethora of classes together as well
and it becomes easy for you to find a familiar face to gravitate to in your classes
throughout the year
he’s the person that saves you a seat in the cafeteria whenever the teacher from the previous class lets you out late
you’re the person that shares your notes with him in class so that you both can be caught up
you’re each other’s first choice as partners
and it’s so so easy being friends with someone as lovely and wonderful as Xingchen
and he’s so great in everything
from his smarts
to his genuine kindness
and you know that he deserves the world
which is why
your world comes to a halting stop
when Xiao Xingchen is suddenly blinded after an accident
luckily he’s not fully blind
but his vision is heavily impaired
and you know that your high school is not the right environment for him safety and social wise
you know it is for the best that his parents are making plans to find a better accommodating school for him
but...
he’s your only, truest, friend,
and it’s only been a short while since you both have met
but you can’t imagine going through the last remaining two years high school without
and as you sit next to his hospital bed, feel his warm hand clutch yours
you think that
he feels the same
»»——⍟——««
A-Qing
you meet A-Qing as you’re helping Xiao Xingchen around the your high school, helping him to orient in an old place through a new perspective
you can’t lie and say that it’s not frustrating
but Xingchen’s always been more patient than you
even now,
when you were supposed to be helping him
it saddens you sometimes
when you can’t be of more help to him than you currently are
“i think this would be pretty useful,”
both you and Xingchen startle at the voice that talks to you both
your eyes find a young girl, probably a freshman, staring up at you
her hand holds out a small foldable stick
“it’s a white cane, it’ll help him feel out the floor better than you saying ‘watch out’ every other minute” the girl notes
“he can still see,” you try to correct, because everyone nowadays just assumes that Xingchen is fully blind... and he just accepts it like he accepts everything in his life-
“oh, i’ve never tried a cane before. i think that could be of help,” Xingchen says in his quiet voice, he turns to you though not fully enough to meet your eyes staring at him
you’ve gotten more used to his profile than his full face as of recently
“can you give it to me, y/n” Xingchen asks you,
and he’s using that voice with you
the ‘be patient, let’s try it’ voice
you manage a stiff nod at the girl, and take the white cane from her and open it from Xingchen
we you place the handle that he’s supposed to hold in his palm, Xingchen as polite as ever says,
“thank you... um...”
“A-Qing,” the girl finally introduces and then turns to you, a half smile on her face
“and you’re y/n,” the young girl parrots from what she heard before
you nod at her, a small ‘thank you’ coming from you too
‘it’s no problem. my grandma is blind so i understand you too,” A-Qing says
at that, you realize, that it would be good to befriend someone that has experience in helping visually impaired people
because you wanted to learn how to help Xingchen better
you friendship starts from Xingchen’s hardships
but as you three spend more time together,
the difficulties of his life lessen
especially with A-Qing’s support
you two become his two closest friends
and A-Qing morphs more into a little sister to you
because for all of her knowledge with Xingchen’s situation, she was still very very new to the high school situation
so she relied on your guidance (in that aspect) as much as you relied on her to help you help Xingchen
but you three come together like a sandwich
and all is well
until your third year of high school
when trouble comes in the form of a human person
»»——⍟——««
Xue Yang
trouble goes by the name of Xue Yang
your high school is relatively medium sized so you think that if you haven’t met everyone yet at least you know of most people
but
when you walk into the hallway at the sight of someone taunting Xingchen, you can’t help the way your blood boils
A-Qing is still young,
and the boy that’s flicking and pushing at Xingchen’s calm shoulder looks to be about your age, an junior
you’re about to intervene when you’re surprised at Xingchen’s quick handed grasp of the man’s hand when it lands on his chest for the third (and final time)
Xingchen holds the wrist tightly
and you remember that before, a short while ago, Xingchen used to do material arts after school
he probably never forgot his instincts, having practiced for so many years
“what do you think you’re doing?”
at the sound of your voice, the boy spares you a glance,
and then you give a short sigh under your breath
because it was Xue Yang
it was always Xue Yang
“just chatting with your boyfriend, y/n. no need to go all mama bird” Xue Yang teases and takes his hand roughly out of Xingchen’s grasp
“he’s not my boyfriend,” you correct Xue Yang, going up to Xingchen’s side to stare Xue Yang down
Xue Yang laughs, humorlessly
“you sure about that? because i think you’re probably babying him even more than his real mother,” and you really want to land a good fist to Xue Yang’s face
but Xingchen’s true testament to your friendship is that he just knows you well enough to reach a hand out and hold your wrist, hold you back from doing anything rash
because your little convo with Xue Yang had already grabbed enough of a crowd
you let Xiao Xingchen and A-Qing lead you away, though you manage to spare a long glare at Xue Yang before he fully leaves your sight
from then on, you all try to avoid Xue Yang as best as you can
and you stay closer to A-Qing and Xiao Xingchen
because it seems like you’re Xue Yang repellent
he only bothers the other two when you’re not within the vicinity
and you don’t dare think that Xue Yang is scared of you (Xue Yang isn’t scared of anything)
but it’s a little blessing that you’re grateful for
you don’t want anyone making Xingchen’s life harder than it already was
and you think that you can get through the last few months of junior year without trouble
well you hope
but one memorable time that trouble visits you
is in the turn spring
right before you you’re about to finish your junior year (practically already a senior in high school)
Xue Yang catches your arm when you’re on your way out of school after your free block
drags you to the bleachers despite your protests
you glare at him,
he stares at you, sighs
“what?” you ask
“you don’t care about anything that has to do with us do you?”
you sigh as you lean your back on the edges of the bleacher seats
“why do you put your friends before us all the time?”
“because he needs me-”
“more than i do?”
Xue Yang’s question surprises you, slightly
but you regain your composure quickly
“talk to me again when you learn that a relationship has friends and partners,
not everything in life is about you”
and that’s the final time you talk to him
»»——⍟——««
Song Lan
Song Lan comes back into your life as abruptly as he had left it
he had always been more of Xingchen’s friend than yours
you remember him being introduced to you as the quiet, barely smiling but loyal friend that Xingchen knew from way back
he and you never talked much
but he talked a lot with Xingchen
and you could tell that the both of them were close
they made each other happy
which was why his abrupt exit from high school
at the time where Xingchen needed him the most
was difficult for you to understand
though at the same time
his departure gave you a better chance to prove your friendship to Xingchen
to be the person that was there for him when it seemed like no one was
and you think that the chapter of old friendships had closed when you graduated high school
so you didn’t think you’d ever see Song Lan again
let alone, see him in your second year of college in the middle of your campus walk with Xingchen’s arm linked with yours
“y/n? why’d you stop? we’re going to be late for class”
and now, with Xingchen fully blind
you were somewhat the eyes for him when it came to new places and people
A-Qing was still in her final year of high school, already planning on following your footsteps and applying to the same college as you guys
so it was all left to you
how do you explain to XIngchen that you just saw his best friend that had left him in high school all those years ago without so much as a goodbye?
should you even let him know?
luckily, you don’t have to make the choice
when Song Lan turns and walks away immediately, not looking back
“it’s nothing, i was just startled when a squirrel ran past,” you lie to Xingchen
and continue walking on the path that you both are on
but Xingchen knows you better than yourself
and he can tell that your grip around his arm is a bit tighter than before
but he doesn’t mention anything
~~~
fate would have it that that was not the last encounter that you have with Song Lan
and the next time you do see him, you don’t let him off the hook so easily
“where did you go? how are you here now?” you ask him, when you manage to latch onto his arm at the small campus cafe
he takes his wrist out of your grasp easily
though his face looks slightly more expressive than you remember he used to be
“how’s Xingchen?” he counters with you and you huff out an exasperated laugh
“you wouldn’t need to ask me that if you had been there for us,” you find yourself saying
because you can still remember, vividly
the first few weeks of Xingchen’s blindness
his embarrassment towards you where you know he wouldn’t have been with Song Lan
and how much he missed him
“do you... do you think i can see him?” Song Lan asks, a beat after your heavy comment
you truly wonder what Xiao Xingchen would have to say to this
because you may be his best friend
but you can’t make his decisions for him
“i don’t know, why don’t you ask him,” you tell Song Lan, then tilt your head
when Song Lan turns around, he sees the person who he’s looking for right away
Xiao Xingchen is hard to miss
Song Lan stares
now it all comes down to, whether or not he would take the first step to him or not
Hello! Hope you're well! If you still write the song requests, could you do a 10? And I'm not sure if I'm allowed to request the song as well, but if I am, could it be I Knew You Were Trouble by Taylor Swift? If not, that's fine too. Thank you! I really enjoy your writing!
hi there! that song is such a throw back, i love it. unfortunately, i don’t write song fic requests with a pre-reced song, as the song comes from randomized and shuffled through the hand of life (aka. YouTube, lmao).
but thank you for sending in a request
here’s my take on it~
.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.
you’re mine, you you are mine completely
.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.
“where are you going?”
you almost want to stop breathing, thinking the dumb idea that maybe if you held your breath you could blend into the afternoon shadows in the small hut
but Xue Yang would know it was you
truly, he would know you anywhere
any way
and although that was something that flattered you in the first blossoming of your relationship
now...
“i’m going to the market,” you say, quietly, to the wall
you can’t look at his face
you don’t want to
you feel Xue Yang’s shadow creep up behind you, and you almost lose your breath with how quickly the man spins you around and slams you into the wall
your closed eyes open in surprise, a mild puff of air coming out of your lips
when you lock eyes with him, you know what he knows
he could always read you so well
“what time will you be coming back?” he asks, calmly
though his voice sounds more like a second chance
to be truthful to him
“later,” you lie, blinking a bit before looking away
you hear the gentle sigh, a puff of warm air beside your cheek
and then a finger, tilts you chin up to meet the eyes that you had avoided
in the sunlight that spills through the small cracks of the open window, his brown eyes sparkle in a light, boyish way
and he looks as if he could love
but you’ve just learned that he doesn’t
not when he had tricked his savior into killing so many
you swallow at the idea, that he might kill you
but Xue Yang simply lifts the edges of his lips, a mini smile before leaning in for a kiss from you
his lips land on yours, for a moment, a blissful second that you fall into ignorance
and when he leaves your lips, you open your eyes to look at him again
“i’ll see you later,” Xue Yang bids you, and you nod lightly
even though you won’t be coming back
Xue Yang watches you leave, eyes trailing after your form
though you get smaller and smaller the farther you get from the hut
Xue Yang doesn’t worry
he can always find you
again
and
again
i still wanna be your favorite - yi city mdzs characters
best friend/good friends headcanons with the yi city arch characters, because everyone needs love (written following inspiration from the yi city arch)
Xiao Xingchen
you’ve been using your dwindling spiritual energy for days now
running from the havoc of your old, demolished sector
keeping yourself awake enough despite the blood that was dripping down your wound
pushing away any and all thoughts of the losses that you had suffered
even though many days have passed since the attack on your sector
it still feels as if it had happened yesterday
after the thousandth step that you take, you end up slumping down at the bark of a tree off the side of the road you’re taking
you’re too far from the town that you had left to go back
and in the yawning distance before you, you don’t see any other town close enough for you to walk to
you sigh to yourself as you look up at the high mid-day sun
your skin is hot
there’s iron in your mouth, on your clothes, all around you
between everything that had went on your barely remember if it’s your blood or the blood of your comrades or your enemies
everything seems hopeless, now that you were to die in a sad, lonesome way
you shock yourself with the dark thought of
perhaps you should have just died protecting your sect
instead of running away
a tear rolls down your cheek just as your spiritual energy runs out
all the pain of the past few days wash over you like a wave
you’re pulled under
by the aching in your bones
the gentle warmth of your blood flowing past your fingertips at your last physical attempt at saving yourself
and the notion of regret, intensifying all that your adrenaline had kept at bay these last few days
you cry, but they are silent tears rolling down your cheeks
you don’t even have the energy to cry any harder
and as your consciousness fades into the background, you barely have enough energy to focus on the sounds of footsteps that approach
᠃ ⚘᠂ ⚘ ˚ ⚘ ᠂ ⚘ ᠃
you wake up
you honestly didn’t think that you would
but you’re startled at the sight that you open your eyes to
there’s a man before you
you want to move back, but your first attempt makes a groan break past your lips
the sound you make causes the man before you to turn around
and then you realize that he is blind
“please don’t move too much; you’ll loosen the bandages on your wound” the man’s gentle, deep voice tells you
you calm your breath, feeling less insecure about the indecent state that you are in, considering that he can’t see you anyways
“i’ll fetch some porridge for you,” you hear him announce before he leaves
from that moment, you feel the debt that you owe to him
for saving your life
for giving more than he had
maybe there was something akin to luck, for you to have met him so
when he returns with the bowl, he helps you sit up and feeds you
his gentleness is something that you are not used to, and it brings tears to your eyes, after days of sadness and grief
and even though he can’t see, the man in front of you is still incredibly attentive
he stalls the spoonful of porridge when he hears the deep breath that you take in the face of your silent tears
outside the night is dark, and before you finish your food he suggests one thing
“stay as long as you would like, to rest and regain your strength”
᠃ ⚘᠂ ⚘ ˚ ⚘ ᠂ ⚘ ᠃
A-Qing
you become a staple in A-Qing’s and Xiao Xingchen’s life after your rescue
and at first, she had you fooled well by her fake blindness
but after a month you realize that she can actually see
if the way her eyes seem to skirt away whenever you look at her is anything to go by
but you don’t tell her that you know
or force her to tell you
everyone had their reasons for doing what they needed to do
she’s still a witty and energetic girl nonetheless
and you grow fond of her quickly
between the three of you, less people are able to swindle Xiao Xingchen/take advantage of his blindness
his kindness
because there is one person that is known to be seeing and two that can actually see
the three of you form your little family, because although Xiao Xingchen can do many things, there were also other things that his blindness limited him
you end up thatching the roof and doing other nitty gritty things once your wound heals up particularly well
and with more people, there was more ways to share the work
Xiao Xingchen also feels less antsy when you accompany A-Qing to the market or other places
A-Qing finds a solace in you that’s different from Xiao Xingchen
where the Taoist monk was gentle and calm, like the breeze
you were like the heat of the sun,
hard, bright
but ultimately needed
after you had spent half a year with them, A-Qing wonders how she and the Taoist monk had survived as long as they did without you
and when the little girl sees how Xiao Xingchen’s lips ease into a smile at the sound of your voice, she feels warmth for you too
A-Qing’s never had a mother,
or a family
but nights in the coffin home are warmer now when your soft voice is there to lull her into sleep
you don’t sing much, not really
but that had been one of the many techniques of your sector
before the incident had happened
but it’s hard to forget all you’ve learned
and you hum a soft tune into the night when the home that you share is a little too quiet
and sometimes, before your deep late night talks with Xiao Xingchen by the fire, A-Qing joins as well
because she is an eager child
and you can’t deny her company anyways
you’ve grown used to the way that the child lays down in your lap
and how you simply throw your cape over her curled up form out of habit
and the way your hand soothes the child’s shoulders in tandem to the melody you begin
you sing a song,
it’s not really a song as much as it is just an exercise for voice cultivation
but it is nice and soft
and with each rise and fall of your voice, A-Qing imagines that perhaps, her mother would have sounded just like this
it takes only a few quick minutes for A-Qing to drift off to sleep, and another quiet minutes after for you to finish
you know the child is asleep by the soft snores that you in your lap, but you look down anyways
A-Qing’s face is cherubic when she isn’t too busy trouble-making,
“the night is cold, i’ll put the child to bed” you tell Xiao Xingchen across the fire,
“hmm...”
you nod at Xiao Xingchen’s hum and gather the child in your arms to put her in her room
Xiao Xingchen waits for you by the fire, as he has grown used to
you return as he expects
and when the night grows quiet again, Xiao Xingchen closes his eyes behind his eye covering and truly listens
reminisces
your voice
᠃ ⚘᠂ ⚘ ˚ ⚘ ᠂ ⚘ ᠃
Xue Yang
you realize that Xiao Xingchen seems to have a knack for finding people in precarious situations
you’re walking along with A-Qing and the monk on one of the off roads back to town when you find him
he’s laying face down on the grass
at first sight, you had thought it too be a mere body and try to shield the child away from it
but you catch sight of the slightest rise, like a struggling breath from the back
“blood,” Xiao Xingchen comments, and you immediately tell him of the body that you see and the distance between you both
between the three of you, you’re able to bring him back to your little coffin home just as night fall is approaching
as you and Xiao Xingchen tend to the man’s wounds, you realize that this is probably how you had looked, when Xiao Xingchen had rescued you...a year (maybe a bit more) ago
the man awakens in the midst of his wrapping and has a similar reaction to when you had first awoken, but you’re quick to explain yourself and Xiao Xingchen
“it’s okay, we’re helping you. please don’t move too much” you say quickly, as you look down at the way the bandage is already reddening from the quick movement that he had tried to do
there’s a muted sort of reaction from the man that neither you nor A-Qing quite understand
you think that’s from the pain of his injury
it’s not
a month under yours and Xiao Xingchen’s care Xue Yang is doing much better, though he doesn’t speak much
although you don’t think much about it, A-Qing off the bat does not like him
“he’s mean to me,” A-Qing had told you while you walked with her to the market
she clung onto your arm as she walked, stick switching back and forth for people to see
the child truly got better at being blind day by day
“perhaps, his injuries make him feel unwell,” because you like to give people the benefit of the doubt
A-Qing huffs
it is not good to judge people, if Xiao Xingchen has taught you anything at all in his care, being with him
but then, the night hunt happens
᠃ ⚘᠂ ⚘ ˚ ⚘ ᠂ ⚘ ᠃
you don’t usually follow Xiao Xingchen on his nighthunts
because you hadn’t used your sword in a while
also because he didn’t ever allow you to
but when you catch Xue Yang’s request to join Xingchen one night, long after everyone had retired to bed, you can’t help but invite yourself along
you hadn’t ever thought that Xingchen would agree
but well,
he had
and so even though the weather tonight was colder and outside seemed darker
you thought that maybe it’d be good for you to come as an extra hand
they might need your help, if neither of them ever directly asked for it
sometimes you regret that you had even followed them anyways
because if you didn’t come along
you wouldn’t have seen the extent with which Xiao Xingchen was tricked
and how evil, truly evil, Xue Yang was
you hold back your own shocked gasp, hidden in the bushes as you watch
it was a tortuous deed that Xue Yang and Xiao Xingchen (unknowingly) participated in
though you muffle your ragged breathing, you couldn’t help but cry at the way the old farmers were begging and moaning, clinging to the edge soft Xiao Xingchen’s robes as the empty holes of their mouths gaped at him
only for Xingchen to slice them dead with a clean cut of his sword
᠃ ⚘᠂ ⚘ ˚ ⚘ ᠂ ⚘ ᠃
Song Lan
the months add up, and some days,
you think to yourself, of a way to rid Xue Yang that would protect everyone,
because the man that was currently living in your coffin home was no ordinary cultivator
perhaps he was a murder
but whatever his background,
he would not be kind
you’re out on the day’s errand, mindlessly going about the market when you bump into someone
he is a tall man, reminds you so much of Xingchen
yet somehow different
you both stare at each other,
unbeknownst to the fate that you both would meet with one another
 death
it was quick,
it was a shock
but you suppose it was worth it
you didn’t think that this man would talk to A-Qing,
nor that the child would leave the man back to the Coffin Home
you didn’t think that the man would know the stranger of your home, now named Xue Yang in your mind or Xiao XIngchen as well as he did
and when the fight breaks out among everyone,
in between the dirty tricks that Xue Yang plays
you step in front of A-Qing to shield her from a sword that is thrown her way
and it’s a quick, easy way to go,
you’ve never been a strong cultivator anyways
you’re just sorry that you had to add more pain to the child’s life
you close your eyes to the tears and wails of A-Qing, peaceful at the very least
that she is alright
Good afternoon, anon back again ( •ॢ◡-ॢ) I completely agree with what you said! It can be hard to keep track of so many characters in a story, especially if there’s A LOT! I always have to do research or look for word posts here on tumblr to read other people’s interpretations of the characters. After I do that, I can better understand and connect with the characters. Plus, I can understand their story plot and how/why they make the choices they do. I was completely confused when I watched The Untamed for the first time haha! I’m currently rewatching it for like the 4th time and I’ve noticed so many things that passed my sight the first couple times! Like what you said, the Yi City arch confused me so much the first time, but I understand it better after watching it for the umpteanth time haha (~ ̄▽ ̄)~ I saw one post on tumblr about the parallels between Wei Wuxian/Lan Wanji and Xiao Xingchen/Song Lan. It was referring to the moment Lan Wanji was watching them leave, having like a sad and longing look in his eyes. (I may butcher this/not interpret it correctly) but the post said something like that Lan Wanji was looking at the future he would have hoped for, to roam the world with Wei Wuxian, no restraints and guided by their beliefs like XX and SL. But in reality, it was the doomed future that XX and SL would never get to continue. I don’t think I explained it correctly, sorry if it’s confusing lol. I’ll search for the post and include it with my next ask (◍•ᴗ•◍)❤ I do plan to read MDZS and watch the other adaptations because I see so many of it on tumblr that it’s peaking my curiosity lol! (Go through all the feels and pain all over again haha) what about you? And if I recall correctly, I thought the ask boxes had like a 509 word limit... but I’m pleased that there is no word limit now! (^ω^)
Hello hello!!! :D ✨
Yes, I can relate! xD Especially because I tend to be deeply involved in the story emotionally and often completely forget about details that maybe are important to understand the characters or what’s currently happening! I often have to make charts for novels/shows that have a lot of characters ahahah 😆
Yes!!! That’s like, one of the most painful parallels I’ve ever seen... 😭 That scene you talked about is one of my favorites in the whole show (episode 10 is actually one of my favorites because we get to know Song Lan and Xiao Xingchen)! And I think that’s why it’s Lan Wangji handing Shuanghua back to Song Lan... It’s such an interesting choice that we get to see these small but relevant moments in their story through Lan Wangji’s eyes! Ahhh there would be so much to write about them! T.T
I also plan to read MDZS! To get a better grasp of the characters and of the whole story! I also recommend the audio drama because I had never listened to an audio drama before and it was such a pleasant surprise! :D And MDZS Q is sooooo cute!!! I still have to finish it tho! The opening song is like “audio happiness”, I don’t know how to explain 😆, it’s just so cheerful and makes me smile every time! 😍
I hope you had a great day dear shy anon!!! 🥰🌷 I’m logging off now and try to get some sleep! 😴
