When Ross's men came into view, Bucky felt her pace slow down. He felt the way her fingers twitched within his hand as her eyes scanned the hall in front of him. It was then that he realized it wasn't that she was nervous, it was how she was counting them without being too obvious.
He knew her mind was in defense mode. Taking in the details to ensure she'd be able to handle herself if the need arises. In an attempt to distract her, he tapped his fingers against her skin to throw off her numbers.
The moment she felt the randomized tapping, it caused her head to shoot up and look at him. When she saw the knowing look on his face, she simply shrugged her shoulders as if it had been nothing.
She understood why he had done it. He wanted her to know that she would be okay there. That there wouldn't be a reason she would need those numbers. But a habit such as that one wasn't easily given up.
When they came up to the door, Bucky went to open it. But the moment his hand reached out a guard reached his hand out to stop him. It caused Bucky to raise a brow as he looked over at the man.
“I'm sorry Sergeant Barnes, but I have an order to only allow her in.” His head tilted towards her.
“Who gave that order?” Bucky asked as a glare formed on his face.
“Secretary Ross.” He said with a nod. “The other Avengers are already in the viewing room.”
“They tried going in and waiting?” Bucky asked as he looked over at her.
“Until Secretary Ross ordered them out.” The guard responded. “I was told to redirect anyone else to the viewing room.”
Her heart sped up at that moment. Bucky wouldn't be there with her. Part of her hoped he'd be able to sit there in the room. She knew he wouldn't have been able to say anything but, his presence would bring her comfort.
“You'll be okay.” Bucky’s words prevented her from beginning to spiral. “I'll be waiting for you the moment you walk out this door.”
“If you're not, I'll hold it against you.” She shrugged slightly before she gently let go of his hand and the moment the guard opened the door she stepped into the room.
Ross had been by the back wall of the room speaking with a guard. Their conversation had been hushed that she hadn't picked up on anything. The moment the door closed behind her, his attention left the guard and zeroed in on her.
“Y/N.” He crossed his arms over his chest. “I was almost certain I'd be forcing you in here.”
A guard in the corner closest to the door motioned for her to take a seat. She eyed it for a moment before she looked back at Ross. She kept her eyes on him the whole time she walked towards the table and took a seat.
“We both know that's not really my name.” She said the moment she was seated.
Ross scoffed. “And Phantom is?”
“No.” She shook her head. She was surprised how calm her voice had come out. There was no venom in her voice in an attempt to defend herself. She simply answered the question. “I wasn't given the name Phantom until my handler at the time saw the local news calling me that. I had been with Hydra for five years at that point.”
“I think I'd like to stick to Murderer.” He said as he slid a thick file towards her. “Maybe even a terrorist. The last six months you have been the constant headache I've had to deal with. Almost 200 hundred casualties and a handful of people in critical condition after today's stunt.”
Quick flashes of memories played in her mind. Death by her hands was not always quick. Some were shot in the head in one quick motion while others had been stabbed and cut in not so pleasant ways. Each of them had come at her with full force. Each face had been there. Each way she had taken their life had been there in her mind.
Her eyes welled up for a moment before she blinked them back just as quickly. She wouldn't let him of all people see her break down. She refused to let him see her fall apart at the memories she was forced to do.
“You can call me whatever you want.” Her voice was steady. “Doesn't change the fact I was a pawn in someone else's game.”
“Is it really someone else's if you went back?” He asked.
“Forced.” She corrected. “There are very few things in my life that I've done willingly.”
Ross didn't find it to be funny, but he chuckled slightly. “Do tell what it is you've done on your own free will.”
“Let's start with me not killing Earth's Mightiest Heroes.” She tilted her head to the side. “Trust me, I had several chances to do so. How about every mission that helped save thousands of people in the process. Or the fact I single handedly took out a Hydra base to ensure my freedom.”
“And how many of those missions were you playing as a double agent?” He asked as he pulled out the chair across from her and sat down. “How many deaths have you caused under Hydra?”
“How many deaths are you responsible for under the name of protecting the US?” She asked back without missing a beat. “If everything I've learned is accurate. My number isn't as nearly as bad as yours. Your casualty list consists mostly of people in the wrong place at the wrong time. Civilians caught in the crossfire in your desperate need to bring in Dr. Banner. Shall we discuss what happened with Blonsky? What about the missions you requested the Avengers go on that were strictly on Hydra’s agenda without your knowledge. Even you, Mr. Secretary, are not as clean as you may think.”
His eyebrow raised and a small smirk pulled at the corner of her lips. She hadn't been wrong and he knew that. The details that had been put out into the world by Natasha with the fall of SHIELD was proof enough.
She watched as he steeled himself. She could see the way he was trying to get this back on track to be in his favor. This wasn't about the things he had done. It was about what she had done and what she knew.
“My history isn't an act of war to other countries.” He started. “Yours on the other hand has proven several times that having you out in the world is dangerous. The intel you've stolen and used for Hydra adds to it. Every government you've stolen from is putting a price on your head.”
“What if I told you I never stole it?” She asked as she watched him. “Sure, the first time around I hacked into what I needed to complete my missions. But this time, most of it was handed to me without so much as entering a single keystroke to bypass security mainframes.”
“And how was it that it was so easily handed to you?” He asked. “It's hard to believe that the intel of a majority of classified documents was just handed to you as if it was nothing. And for an elaborate measure to obtain that technology doesn't come easy as you say it is. ”
“Tell me something, Ross.” She said as she leaned back in her seat and crossed her arms over her chest. “Do you vet everyone that works with you?”
His eyes narrowed for a moment. “That's not what we're discussing.”
“Isn't it?” She asked. “Your questions are based on what information I can provide on how Hydra has provided Intel for my missions. Your office has had several investigations about security data breaches in the last year.” She hadn't missed the way Ross had stiffened in his seat. She could see in his eyes that what she was saying wasn't new information to him. It wasn't public information either. “What's it like upping the household security for the secrets you know? Or the agents you keep on security detail for your daughter because the simple knowledge of what was breached could put her life in danger?”
“Don't you dare-” Ross began but she cut him off.
“Or how about the details of the German technology convoy?” Her voice was a little louder than his. “Your informant in Germany sent over the details. It was a way to ensure the US knew what was being moved and if it would be safe in transport. And what do you know, five hours later they were put into my hands with a mission tied into it. If you want someone to blame, you might want to get Internal Affairs involved. I'm just the puppet.”
A pin drop could be heard after her voice had left the air. Ross's glare was heavy as he kept his attention on her. Her eyes never left him as she didn't back down. If this had been two years ago, a full smirk would have pulled at the corner of her lips as she spoke to him. But this was an interrogation and the circumstances were now different.
Her words were enough to even leave the ones behind the window with their jaws hanging. The information she had given was enough to give Ross everything he was asking for with her usual flair.
A proud smile had been on Bucky's face as he watched the interaction. She hadn't changed at all. Her tactics were the same even when she had just been subjected to plenty of things over the last two years.
“I just remembered why I would never want to be on the opposite side of the table from her.” Sam said with a shake of his head.
“It's all that training she's had.” Natasha noted. “And she's had more of it than I did.”
“More lethal too.” Tony noted. It caused them all to look towards him for a moment. “All I'm saying is none of us have been able to render Ross speechless. There's a staredown happening a few feet from us and the people in this room have never done that before.”
“You know who it is.” Ross said, stopping their conversation.
“That's a vague assumption.” She said with a slight tilt of her head. “I know a lot of things and who they pertain to. Your secrets, I definitely know. Your informants throughout different agencies, I know them. Met a few of them as well.” She pursed her lips for a moment. “As an Avenger and with Hydra, for that matter. Do I know who is responsible for hacking into it all? Of course.” Her eyes moved from Ross to the window behind him. “Just like I know my handler has a false identity within your ranks and hasn't raised any red flags, even before the fall of SHIELD.”
Bucky and Steve looked at each other for a moment before Steve was moving away from the window. A silent conversation had been had. She wasn't just giving that information as if it was nothing. That wasn't for Ross. It was for them.
“Your handler.” Ross clarified. “Who is it?”
“I want immunity.” She looked back towards him.
Ross scoffed. “This isn't a negotiation. I doubt you'd see daylight after today.”
“Shame.” She said with a sigh. “I'm sure I can make some friends in some very low places that would just love to hear what I've learned over the years.”
“Is that a threat?” He asked as he began standing. “I'll have you locked away-”
“Where?” She asked as she leaned forward. “Your Raft was deemed inhumane and was dismantled. There's not a jail or prison on this Earth you'd be able to put me in. Solitary confinement might be ideal, but all it's gonna take is for one corrupt guard to ask the right question, for the right price. Execution may be your saving grace, but how do you get all of them to agree to let me walk out of here to start the process for it?” Her head nodded towards the window.
She watched as Ross actually looked over his shoulder at the window. To her and Ross's knowledge, the whole team had been behind that window watching. The same team who were stubborn enough to go against him on several things at several different times.
“I'm not the enemy here, Ross.” She continued. “Secrets can be kept for the right people. Having me as an ally is a whole lot better than having to look over your shoulder wondering who might come for that specific piece of information. I am also the only one capable of giving the updated insider information.”
“So far you've only managed to say you have details but you haven't given anything to show you actually do. Its all been speculation.”
She knew what Ross was doing. He was trying to turn this back in his favor. He wanted the information without giving her anything in return. She could spill it all and he wouldn't give her anything in return.
“Immunity. And I'll start with the closest threat that can be dealt with immediately.”
“Closest threat?” Sam asked as he watched Ross stare her down once more. “Is there something else we aren't aware of?”
“They can be anywhere.” Bucky responded. “They were here. There could be others near by waiting for the next command.”
Then a thought crossed his mind. One that made him tense at the thought. He did a quick glance of the people in the room. The whole team had been there, minus Steve as he was checking the new lead. And at the back wall by the door, two guards were posted. They were quietly talking among themselves oblivious to the conversations being had by the team.
When he brought his attention back to the window, he watched the guards in the room. He watched as some of their hands flexed by their sides. He watched as three particular ones had sweat dewing on their forehead while another looked completely bored.
Bucky realized she wasn't counting how many guards were present in the event that she needed an escape. She was counting how many faces she knew.
“The terms of your immunity will be based on what information you provide and if it is accurate.” Ross began and Bucky brought his attention to her.
He watched as she took in his words for a moment before she nodded her head. “Just to be clear, if the first piece of information I give is accurate, I get immunity?”
She was being smart about it. She needed to hear him say it. He needed to say it in order for her to accept.
“Yes.” Ross agreed, annoyed.
She nodded her head and uncrossed her arms as she braced herself. She knew what would come as soon as she said it.
Bucky looked towards Natasha and Sam. The moment he had their attention his eyes shifted towards the guards at the door. A simple motion that told them to prepare themselves. It earned brow raises from both of them until they heard her speak.
“Of the ten guards you came with, six of them are Hydra associates.”
The moment the words filled the air. Three of the guards in the interrogation room moved towards her to attack. A way to silence her if she began speaking about Hydra. She shot up from her seat and began defending herself.
In the same moment, the viewing room door opened, two other guards came in. The goal was to keep the Avengers from getting to Phantom. But the guards were currently outnumbered and out-powered. It wouldn't be long before they were taken down.
Back in the interrogation room, she had used the chair to her advantage to knock one of them unconscious. The right amount of force with movement and hitting the guard in the right sport worked in her favor.
As the two other guards advanced, her hands instinctively went down towards her sides, looking for weapons. But her tactical belts had been removed while she had been out. With a quick shake of her head she braced herself for hand to hand combat until she could steal something from one of them.
She was trained for this. Not just in the recent months but from years of it being embedded into her mind. Never be weaponless.
It took only one block from the guard on her left before she had something in her hand. And as her elbow came back and hit the guard square in the face on her right, she knew that all it would take would be to get the right amount of spacing and it'd be over. She'd come out of this untouched.
In one breath, she had a gun in her hand and within the next breath both of the guards had been on the ground. A routine she could do in her sleep if she ever needed to. The echoes from the gunshots in such an enclosed space didn't phase her at all.
From the moment she had outed the guards to them lying on the ground, the time had passed quickly. But she hadn't so much as broken a sweat by the time she looked back at Ross. He was currently being protected by the one single guard that wasn't Hydra.
Pulling the magazine out and clearing the chamber, she placed the gun on the table between her and them. It would have been smarter to keep the gun in hand. But she didn't need Ross to think she was a threat.
“I believe that was enough to grant immunity.”
Bucky’s voice had startled her. While her body didn't flinch or react in a way anyone else had, she had simply tensed up. She hadn't known he had even come into the room, let alone when. And that seemed to throw her off more.
“You aren't paying attention.” Her handler said as he circled the sparring room. The barely legal adult currently had been held in a headlock. With the right leverage her neck could easily be snapped.
She'd only been training with Hydra for a few weeks. Her mind had been reduced to nothing but skills. Yet she was currently being scolded like a child for not paying close attention to the door behind her.
“If this had been a mission, you would have failed.” He said as he gave a nod. The soldier let her go at the command and took a step back. “You are worth every penny spent and I'll make it so you never forget about all the entry ways.”
The memory had pulled her in that she didn't hear Ross accept the terms of immunity. Nor did she hear the way Bucky had commented about making plans to get the information Ross needed. Her brain didn't even register the voice above them stating Captain Rogers was requesting their presence.
That name everyone had been calling her for years could be heard a moment later. It was used in an attempt to get her back to the present, not wherever her mind currently was.
“I got her.” Bucky said as he came to stand beside her. He didn't know when her mind pulled her back in or what caused her to.
Just as he had earlier, he gently reached out and grabbed her hand. And just like earlier he gauged on how she reacted to him doing so. Each step he took in an attempt to bring her out of her mind always revolved around if she reacted in any way.
If she flinched or instinctively pulled herself out of his hold, he would have stopped and tried a different approach. But when she didn't react negatively, he continued. Just like now, the moment he felt her fingers adjust in a bit before relaxing, he knew he could continue.
“What memory has you pulled in?” He asked curiously even though he knew she wouldn't answer him.
He could see it in the way her eyes weren't focused on one thing. They flicked from one spot to another, trying to find a place to settle on. At least until they welled up. An ache filled Bucky’s chest as he watched the first tear fall from her eyes.
“You don't have to stay in there.” He said as he brought his left hand up to gently run his vibranium fingers along her cheek. He hoped that the cold contrast of the metal would help ease her out. “You're safe with me. I've got you and I'm not going to let you go until you want me to.”
He tried to think about all of the times she had helped him. His nightmares didn't stop after he had come back from Wakanda. He was safe from ever being pulled back in but the memories that were tied to a majority of his life were unescapable. She was the one that helped him out every time.
His thumb came up and wiped the tears that had fallen down her cheek. A moment later he watched as her free hand came up and rested on top of his. When his eyes met hers, the vacant look was gone. Her eyes were focused on him.
“There she is.” He said, giving her a smile.
“How long was it this time?” She asked softly as she leaned into the vibranium. The cool metal felt comfortable to her. It grounded her in a way she never realized she needed until now.
“No longer than earlier.” He nodded. “Ross granted your immunity, right before Steve had FRIDAY call us up. Agents even came in and took the bodies.”
Her head instantly turned to where the bodies had been before she got pulled into her head. The floor had been empty of bodies, but the pools of blood that had gathered had yet to be clean.
Her bullet.
But it hadn't been. Not this time. She was trying to prove a point and she did just that. Those bullets were meant for her. She was supposed to be the one on the ground without a heartbeat.
“How long before Ross wants everything I can provide?” She asked, bringing her attention back to him.
“We've got enough breathing room, for now.” He sighed as he took a step back from her. “Might be a good thing given that Steve has found something.” He nodded his head towards the exit.
“Right.”
It didn't take them long to get up to the conference room. The Avengers had been in there discussing several things from the day. Ross stood in the corner with the remaining trusted guards. From the looks of it, he was simply listening as he occasionally glared at the guards with them. As if gauging if they were really safe from Hydra’s influence.
The moment they stepped into the room, the conversations hadn't stopped. Nor did they make her feel like she was someone who left years ago. It was like she never left or missed a beat. It felt comforting in comparison to what could have possibly happened.
When they reached the conference table, Wanda instantly pulled her into a hug. The tight embrace had been welcoming in ways she'd never be able to express. And it almost brought tears to both of their eyes.
Wanda had been her closest friend. She hated how hard it had been to leave that night without so much as saying goodbye to her. Deep down that was why she opened her mind up to Wanda a lot more than she normally would. It was a way to say goodbye without having Wanda try to stop her.
“Welcome back.” Wanda said, still holding onto her.
She could only give a smile in response as she pulled away slightly to look at Wanda. Was she really back? Would they just take her in with open arms this time around? They may have decided on things that she wasn't around for.
Steve cleared his throat, getting their attention. “I believe I found what you spoke about. I didn't want to let the others see it until you did.”
She raised her eyebrow for a moment. “If you know, then why not go for it?”
“Because being one hundred percent sure is better than going off an assumption.” He nodded his head before he handed her the Stark pad. “I had narrowed it down to a handful. But given the new information there's only two of them that are currently flagged.”
That was when the conversations around her stopped. That was when the attention was on her. It was the information that she could provide that sparked their curiosity.
Taking a hold of the device, she looked at the files on screen. Between the two faces, her eyes had instantly gone to the one on the left. The memories were quick, each of them quick and simple. Your next mission…
And when the mission was complete, his smirk would grow before he clapped his hands together.
“I told my brother he should have invested in you instead of letting the others take control over you. Leaving you under cover like that was a mistake. Getting you back like this, it's been the cherry on top.”
Bucky hadn't missed the way her grip tightened on the device in her hands. It made him reach out for it and tug at it for her hands to let go of it. He handed it to Steve before he turned back to look at her.
“The one on the left.” She said after a few deep breaths. “The younger Strucker brother.”
“Excuse me,” Tony said almost in disbelief. “Strucker? As in the Strucker that had Loki's scepter? The one Ultron killed to send a message?”
She nodded her head. “Between the two of them, they had a system going. One of them had a heavy hand in things and the other kept a low profile. Changed his name and climbed the ranks as if it was something he had been working for his whole life. He kept all ties severed and you'd never suspect him for anything. With the fall of SHIELD I was handed off to another cell when an experimental cell refused to take charge. I remember being told that an opportunity had been missed with that cell. An asset such as myself would have benefited from the experiments. Instead I was set up for a different mission that would eventually lead to me helping to raid that cell.”
She tried as best as she could to keep memories from wanting to suck her back into her mind. Flashes and echoes played in her mind but she had been able to keep her focus. And as long as she didn't sit with one memory for too long, she'd be fine.
“I didn't meet this Strucker until after I had been reprogrammed.” She tried not to look at any of them in the face. She didn't want to see the looks in their eyes as she talked about it. “He had a right hand that would act as my handler when Strucker couldn't be present for mission assignments and debriefs. I never learned his name but I knew his face because he was the first and last face I saw each time I woke up and before I was tossed in a cell. And when the programming was set, he was there. It wasn't long after that I was in D.C. meeting Strucker.
“He was boastful when I returned from a mission. Never missed an opportunity to mention how his brother had been wrong in refusing me. That if anything were to show his success, it was me and the weapon that we were creating. It'd be his chance to show how much Hydra had truly grown since the fall of SHIELD. To prove that hiding in the shadow until the right time would be worth it.”
“What was he planning on building?” It was Ross's voice that filled the air.
“He took the data information his brother had collected along with blood samples from test subjects.” She began as she looked towards Ross. “He also found a way to miniaturize Project Insight. Put the two together and-”
“You get a weapon that can turn specific people into enhanced weapons.” Steve finished for her.

Warnings: strong language, slight mentions of bullying / rape / death / car crash / suicide / pregnancy (nothing graphic), talks of PTSD (Bucky's mostly), fluff, angst, sexual themes/innuendos
Summary: Steve and you are working on a project together: Project Restore.
Pairing: Steve Rogers x Reader
Word Count: ~9.2k
A/N: SECOND ONESHOT IN A WEEK AND THE LONGEST ONESHOT I’VE EVER WRITTEN. Honestly, I don’t know when I started this (oops) and where I was supposed to go with it. Halfway through I decided to become like Shakespeare or something and it ended up a lot longer than it should’ve been. Anyway, I hope you guys like this! ( Also I feel like a genius for coming up with a good title and then the ending <3 )
You knew how the world worked and how people treated each other from a young age. Your parents had told you everything from the beginning, not believing in sugarcoating anything. You knew that people could pass a crime scene with zero emotion and spread rumours that could end in serious consequences. You knew that people lurked in the dark, waiting to prey on innocent souls. You weren’t stupid and knew how the world worked.
You saw everything unfold in front of you as you got older. The way students would gossip about the younger and more vulnerable kids while their friends laughed with them. You heard the whispers pass among the halls about the boy who peed his bed in grade four. You saw him leave the school in tears, trying and failing to stop the rumours from spreading in the school. You heard the whispers in high school about the girl who slept with the jock and ended up pregnant. You saw her casket lower to the ground and the police announced it was suicide.
You left your home to live in Manhattan, hoping to make the world a better place by working with Stark Industries and the Avengers. Your parents always told you that you had an eye on everything good in the world. They told you it was what made you a good person. But you always kept an eye on the bad, thinking of what could be done to make it disappear. It wasn’t that you didn’t see the bad, you just saw everything more clearly than others.
The boy who peed his pants had been in a car accident, resulting in a concussion in his brain. That concussion deprived him of doing regular, day-to-day activities. You knew because you had talked to him after everything that had happened and he was glad that someone was listening. He moved, but you were happy to get his side of the story.
The girl who committed suicide was raped and that ended in her getting pregnant. Her parents had told you everything about her; her excellent grade, her hobbies, her friends and family. They were glad that you listened to them and trusted them. When you asked about what the police did to the jock, they told you that they didn’t have the proof. The jock was arrested a few days later and the parents were glad their daughter got justice. They didn’t need to know that it was you who got evidence against him.
“Miss Y/S?” FRIDAY spoke into the room. You hummed, burning two wires together and turning to face the computer again. “Captain Rogers is waiting for you in the lounge to discuss Project Restore.”
“Tell him I’m a bit busy right now,” you said absentmindedly, the response almost automatic now. You and Steve were trying to restore Bucky’s memories—Shuri got rid of the trigger words and Steve had told her that that was enough. In an attempt to restore Bucky’s past memories, you had told Steve you had to recreate the chair.
There was no other way the conversation was going to end. Steve argued and argued, throwing everything right at your face while you listened with a stoic face. You knew Bucky would be petrified of the chair, but you were hoping he would associate it with something better. Something like getting his past life back. Maybe Bucky would look back at the chair and smile slightly because it gave him the old memories back. But Steve was having none of it, even if Bucky had given the green.
“Captain Rogers insists that you come up now,” FRIDAY said after a few seconds. You shook your head, typing in codes and glancing at the robot you were working on. It was supposed to help with young children’s mental health by listening and analyzing their behaviour and giving the reports to doctors.
“Tell him I insist I’m busy.” You started retyping the code, seeing that the robot had knocked a few things down.
“Captain Rogers is persistent.” FRIDAY seemed tired of passing messages among messages between the two of you. You shrugged and didn’t reply back, focusing on the codes rather than the captain. He had to get his head out of his ass if he wanted to talk to you. “Captain Rogers has requested access to Project Restore files.”
“Access denied,” you deadpanned, hearing the loud swearing and footsteps coming down to your lab. You held back the smirk as you turned your chair around and watched Steve punch in the code you had given him all those months back, stalking in with a scowl on his face. “Need something, Rogers?”
“You know exactly why I’m here,” he hissed, pulling out a chair and taking a seat at a table full of prototypes. You hummed and crossed your arms, leaning back in your chair as you studied his posture. He sighed and ran a hand down his face, sinking down in the chair more. “I wanna say sorry for how I acted. I just—I really want to protect him and giving him back to the chair…” Steve shook his head and sunk further down, making himself look smaller. Something tugged in your heart.
“I know,” you whispered, getting up and starting to organize some things. You looked at him again, patting his head as you moved past him to put some files on the shelf. You saw him glance at you in surprise at the gesture, but you ignored it because you did that to almost everyone in the compound. He just wasn’t ever at the receiving end.
“If you knew, why did you suggest it?” Steve asked when you sat back down at the computer and started to save and delete things.
“I want him to remember just as much as you do, Rogers,” you replied, swinging your legs so that the chair faced him again. “He’s a friend. And a human, like the rest of us. I know he’s been through a lot and that includes the chair. I’ve seen him here with cuts and bruises, telling me that the medical wing reminds him too much of that time. He hates the white coats, the needles, the tubes, and the smell of medications. I know what you know, Rogers. Maybe, just maybe, a bit more.”
“So,” Steve started, taking a bit of a calculated breath, “you mean that you did that on purpose?” You nodded, biting the inside of your cheek.
“Sometimes the best way to get rid of your fears is to be exposed to them,” you said, intertwining your hands and placing them on your lap. “It might not always work, but Barnes wants to try. So who are we to say no?”
“He’s stubborn, Y/N,” Steve sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “He’s so stubborn that he’ll have a panic attack instead of asking you to stop.”
“I never said we need to tell him everything about the procedure.” You shrugged innocently, a glint in your eyes. Steve raised an eyebrow. “It’s unethical, but it’ll keep him safe.”
Steve thought about it for a second before he said, “Fine. What’re you thinking?”
“We’ll monitor his heart rate and anytime it seems like he’s going to have a panic attack, we stop.”
“Won’t he figure it out? He’s not stupid.”
“Not if we tell him it could overpower and fry his brain.” Steve started laughing at your mischievous tone. You bit your lip to stop yourself from laughing as well.
“Thought you were a doctor.”
“Unethical, but practical. At least I think so. After all, I am a human first.”
“I’d hope so.” Your eyes narrowed at the response, making him chuckle and shake his head. “I didn’t mean it like that, doc.” You only hummed in response, shrugging and turning around to continue working on the robot. You cut a few wires apart and connected them with one another and then checked your coding, trying to figure out why it was swinging its arms. You felt Steve’s warm breath on your neck, a tickling sensation making you want to sigh.
“What’s this?” He pointed at the robot, an amused tone coming into your hearing. You turned to look at him, feigning an offended look.
“It’s you! Doesn’t it look like you?” You started pointing at the bug-like cameras for eyes and the O-shaped speaker for a mouth. “Look, it has your eyes and mouth. And the rectangle-shaped face too!” You turned your head to look at him with an innocent expression etched on your face.
“Ha, ha. Very funny,” he said sarcastically, an unamused face that would make anyone think that he didn’t find it funny. But the glint in his eyes told you that he absolutely loved your sense of humour.
“It’s for all the kids' hospitals. Designed to keep an eye on their vitals and performance so if there’s even the slightest change in anything, the doctors will be notified right away with an app or this watch.” You picked up the watch, waving it slightly, and shrugged. “Hopefully it’ll save some lives.”
“It will.” He said that statement as if it was a fact. It wasn’t. Logically speaking, the robot prototype would take another year or so to be finished and then another year or so to manufacture more if this one worked properly. But you decided to keep his hope up by nodding.
“It’ll work eventually, but until I figure this out,” you started, closing the window and opening up Project Restore, “we can work on this.” You grinned when a groaned fuck escaped his lips.
“I mean, this is crazy,” his voice came out breathy and a hint of something like pride was intertwined with it. You ignored your heart for the moment being.
“If it gets you to swear, Cap,” you teased, flicking through the blueprints and mechanism that you still needed to get. Hopefully, you could call in a favour with Okoye. She owed you from the one time you upgraded her spear—Shuri seemed like she was about to kill you for giving Okoye a reason to poke fun at her.
“I swear,” he said, licking his lips when you turned your head to look at him with a raised eyebrow. “Okay, fine, I swear sometimes only. But, jeez, can ya blame me? You’ve really got an eye for these types of things.” He shrugged, a pink tinge blossoming on his cheeks as he averted his eyes from you.
“If that’s what—” you opened up a file with the power source blueprints— “floats your boat, Cap.”
“Please,” Steve started, “call me Steve. I’m not technically a captain if you really think about it.”
“What d’you mean?” You opened up a software and started on the 3-D model of the chair. You honestly didn’t think that Steve would agree to throw Bucky back on the chair, even if it meant that his memories would be restored. The tragedy of James Buchanan Barnes wasn’t unknown in your world, you knew exactly what had happened on the chair from the beginning. Because of that, you hadn’t made a model yet.
“I just went around punching things until they called me captain because of the dumb mascot I was before that.”
“And now that dumb mascot symbolizes America,” you added nonchalantly, earning you a funny look from him. You shrugged again. “I say things the way they are, Steve.”
“Sometimes I wonder if you’re real, y’know?”
“I’m a ghost,” you deadpanned, head-butting him lightly, almost affectionately, when he scoffed at your statement and rolled his eyes.
“You might be a vampire,” he retorted, yawning as he checked the time on the corner of your computer screen. It was nearly three in the morning and he wondered if you ever got a full night’s rest in the last couple of days. By the looks of you, you didn’t. The way dark circles were forming around your eyes and the way your shoulders slumped, he knew you didn’t. He was determined to get you to sleep before sunrise.
“You saying I suck the life outta you?” You didn’t falter with your quips and he found delight in it, but his mind didn’t sway. Not when it came to your health.
“I think you might be suckin’ the life outta yourself, darlin’.” Your hands stopped ever so slightly before going on to the coding you were working on. “Get some sleep.”
“How about no?” You kept going.
“How ‘bout I just lift ya up ‘n carry ya to your room, huh?” He twisted your chair so that you had no choice but to stop and look at him. “‘S nearing three in the morning.”
“So?” You crossed your arms and moved back, leaning against the chair as your eyes drooped shut for a moment too long now that your eyes weren’t focused on the computer screen. He smirked. “Seriously, I’m fine.”
“Nah, darlin’.” Something about the way darling was rolling off of his tongue made you look at the man in front of you, trying to force you to go rest for your own good. Surely he wasn’t really looking out for you, he was just making sure your mind was in the best place when figuring out the chair for his best friend. It had nothing to do with your health. It was just coming in the way of his best friend’s progress so he had to care for you. Right?
“I’m fine,” you seethed, a gut-churning feeling making you want to scream at Steve, but it wasn’t his fault you didn’t know how to accept help. Especially when it was staring right back at you in the face with baby blues that could melt your heart in mere seconds.
“No, you’re not,” he whispered gently, placing his hands on the armrests and trapping you between his body and the chair. “You need to rest, Y/N. Your body is literally begging for you to sleep and rest, but you keep working. I get that you’re doing amazing things for others, the robot design is awesome, but you need to look after yourself. And, like I said before, I’m ready to carry ya, darlin’.”
“I don’t think so—” You squealed when Steve effortlessly picked you up bridal style. You instinctively wrapped your hands around his arms before swatting at his chest when he grinned smugly. Then you yawned and he stifled his laughter. “You’re not getting away with this, Rogers.”
“Thought you were gonna call me Steve.” Now if you knew better, which you did, you would say he downright pouted at hearing his last name escape your lips.
“You’ve lost the privilege,” you huffed as he started for the stairs. He grinned boyishly and you ignored the slight skip of your heart. Emphasis on the slight. He looked down at you once more, giving you just enough time to fall into his eyes. Maybe it was the green army jacket you were wearing, but his eyes never looked this green to you. Maybe you just never noticed it. You had never noticed the flecks of green that littered the inside of his irises, making his eyes look a light shade of green when there was more green around.
“Do you always stay up so late?” His eyes were back in front of him as he reached the top of the stairs, walking down the hall to get to your rooms. You cleared your throat and mind before you spoke again.
“Maybe. Maybe I just wanted a ride,” you replied easily, the remarks being the only reason you survived through high school and university. “And what’s a better ride than Captain America himself?” Your unintended innuendo slipped past him and you were glad for that for once. You hadn’t thought about it fast enough to catch your slip-up until you said it out loud. Even if Steve caught onto it—which you kind of doubted since he was a man from the 40s—he didn’t let on.
“You’re a menace.” He shook his head, corners of his lips curling to form a soft smile. He knew you were lying. Sort of. You hadn’t answered him completely, but your maybe meant that you hadn’t been getting too much sleep and your little joke there meant you wanted to avoid the conversation. Steve was happy to oblige, leaving the topic and moving on to the other.
“The chair might be ready in a week or two,” you started, eyes darting down to his neck where your hands were. He could feel them moving nervously, a tick that he had noticed before this moment, back when you were new to the facility. “We need a few things. I’ll order them tomorrow since you insist I sleep before working. I’ll also need to talk to Barnes about the machinery, see what he’s comfortable with and not. I think that the chair doesn’t need to look exactly the same, but the similarity between the sketches I’ve made and the sketches of Hydra’s chair are too similar. I need him to be sure that he could handle it.
“Then I might need to get Shuri’s opinion on the amplifier on the power source and check some routing issues that might occur. She also has this AI that allows her to create artificial trails and using that we’ll find out if the machine would work or not. And if so, what the percentage rate of this working is. Then I also need Stark’s to help with the technical building part of it. Not that I’d mess up that badly, but it’s good to have a second pair of eyes. Plus, he’d get a kick out of it. And he’s good at what he does.”
Abrupt silence made his stomach drop slightly, missing the sound of your voice and the vibrations running down his arms at each syllable you spoke.
“Anything else I should know?” Steve asked once you went quiet. You almost looked sheepish when you glanced back up at him, earning a raised eyebrow from him.
“No, I’ve blabbered too much already,” you whispered, your bedroom door and his coming into view. His eyebrows furrowed and a slight frown appeared on his lips as he slowed his pace a few metres away from your bedrooms. You raised an eyebrow at his sudden gestures.
“There’s probably more I need to know,” he said, shaking his head in what seemed like dismay. “I know there’s more, Y/N. Tell me what I’m missin’. Please.”
“You don’t wanna hear me rambling about the boring technical stuff,” you mumbled, tapping your thumb against the hollow of his throat. The gesture made tighten his grip on you, one you could feel through the rough material of the jacket.
“Darlin’, nothing about it was boring,” he reassured you, coming to a stop in front of your bedroom. He didn’t let you down just yet, even when you squirmed as a hint. “I’m serious, Y/N. You do amazing things, and helping Bucky is just one of many, so if I get the chance to hear you talk about it, I’ll hear it. I hear you.”
He slowly lowered you down when you evidently had nothing to say to him. You, for the first time, didn’t know what to say and he was okay with that. A bit surprised, but okay. He realized that his words might have meant nothing to you or maybe, just maybe, meant more than he knew.
With your feet on the ground, you had no reason to have your arms slung around his shoulders. There was no reason his hands should have stayed around your waist to keep you close enough to smell each other’s scent. There was absolutely no reason for you both to stare at each other as his last words lingered in the air and echoed in your head over and over and over again. There was no reason for your hearts to be beating this fast and no reason for your head to spin as you both drew in a deep breath.
But it all happened, all at once in that one moment of time. Everything felt like a fever dream and you both could pretend that it was normal. Normal for you both to be holding onto each other, this close, and having your head spinning and heart beating fast. You both let it happen for that moment.
“Goodnight, Steve,” you breathed out, breaking the second’s silence and letting your hands slide down, lingering slightly as they came down to your sides. His hands lifted off as soon as yours did, but he leaned down to press a kiss to your cheek.
“Goodnight, Y/N,” he whispered against your skin, his breath warm on your cheek. You shivered ever so slightly and watched him move back, a slight smirk on his face as he nodded at you, walking backwards to lean against his door. You blindly reached for your doorknob and twisted it before turning and swiftly entering, breaking your eye contact with the blond who had left you this flustered. You locked the door out of habit and lifted a hand to your chest, taking deep breaths to calm your racing heart.
It wasn’t like you were the only one with a heart threatening to beat straight out of your chest.
Steve was still out in the hallway, watching your door close with a click and another click following, indicating that your door was now locked. His eyes dropped to the ground, staring at the scruff on his left shoe and wondering about how he had the confidence to go ahead and kiss you goodnight. Sure it wasn’t on the lips, but it was still a kiss and, back in his time, it meant a whole lot more. You did look surprised or shocked, but you didn’t look like you hated him for it or didn’t want him to do it again.
He didn’t plan on doing it anytime soon again, confidence having left him immediately after the unintended kiss on the cheek. He was sure that the confidence wasn’t coming back for a while.
———
A few days passed after that impromptu kiss and your dynamic with Steve was the same as always. It had changed, but not enough for you two to notice. It was tiny changes that led to the noticeable ones—to the team at least; you two were basically in your world.
It started with the excuse of Project Restore. Steve would bring up that anywhere he didn’t want to be. Usually, it was at those meetings that Tony called for the team for team building exercises, which consist of regular activities like Jenga and Monopoly. Those games were intense and, more likely than not, were the reason the team fought. Steve absolutely loathed Monopoly with a burning passion. Anytime Tony brought up the meetings, Steve would run off to meet you in your lab with the excuse of the project. Needless to say, Tony tried to get you involved, but you beat him at Monopoly so he stopped.
Then he would start spending more time with you in your lab than at training with the excuse of lifting heavy parts that you couldn’t. You couldn’t deny the extra help and he could use the lifting as his training. He started teasing you when you couldn’t lift something and he could. You would roll your eyes at him, say something snarky with a glint in your eyes, and smirk as he fumbled with his retort. The glint in your eyes always had him fumbling and flustered. Some days Bucky would drop in to help with the parts and Steve would have to put his teasing on a halt.
The one time he teased you with Bucky around, you pouted and it just about knocked the breath out of him. He knew he was falling for you then, but knew that you couldn’t feel the same. Not with the way you shook your head at him when he did something wrong and told him he was an idiot. Sure, there was a smile on your face, but there was no way you liked him back. You were way out of his league and he was sure that you knew that. That’s why you swatted his hand when he touched your shoulder when you seemed frustrated or gave him a look when he placed a hand on your back while walking upstairs.
Despite all that, he still wanted to be at least your friend. So he started spending even more time around your lab as the process of building the chair came to. He made up the excuse of wanting to be around in case something went wrong or still helping with the larger parts. He had the excuses built up and he was spouting them off whenever someone asked why. He noticed the little ticks that he hadn’t already noticed while you were working. The way you pressed your tongue to your cheek when you wanted your hands to be steady. Or the way you wrinkled your nose when something went wrong or when you laughed too hard.
Your laugh was one of his top three noises. Along with your giggles and voice. You liked to ramble when you didn’t know what to do. Sometimes the answer would be hidden inside your rambles and you would light up when you found the solution. Sometimes you smacked your head with your palm and giggled at your own stupidity, still mumbling about whatever. He always smiled and shook his head, assuring you that you aren’t stupid, far from stupid.
When Shuri gave you back the results, you beamed so brightly and giggled when you flipped the page and showed Steve, starting to ramble about the percentage being 96.87% and way higher than what you thought it would be.
“I knew you could do it, darlin’,” he said, watching you grin widely at him and pull the paper down from his face. He knew he would never get used to the way his heart skipped a beat at your smile. Happiness was literally bursting out of you, seeing the way you glowed at his compliments. You were taking his compliments better now too.
The first time he had complimented you on your work, you had shrugged and said something along the lines of it could’ve been better if it were someone else, maybe at least. He shook his head and insisted that you were amazing at what you were doing, gesturing to the robot and blueprints of the chair along with the new AI you had started. You had merely shrugged again and went back to sketching another model of the chair. You had made three models of the chair before, each carrying the same sort of foundation and structure. You had shown Steve each model, but you wanted him to be the one to show Bucky them.
When Steve had asked why, you simply told him that he was basically Bucky’s brother. He would trust him a bit more than you. Just a tad bit more, but more you had added with a quirky smirk and the same mischievous glint in your eyes. Steve almost leaned down to kiss your smirk away, but caught himself when you turned away with a shake of your head. There was no way you wanted him, not with the way you acted.
“I wonder if I can recalibrate—” You went ahead and started telling him of what you could do to one of your abandoned projects for it to be recycled. That’s something else that he liked about you. You always tried to give something that was thrown away another chance at working for something else. It could be some wires, some boards, or even a giant metal piece, but you always looked through those bins to find something. He liked that a lot about you.
“And can you ask Barnes if this model seems fine?” You finished ranting and turned to look at him with slight disarray and a bit breathless. You licked your dry lips like you always did after talking for a while and shoved a rolled-up blueprint towards him. “It seems the most different out of all the ones we designed.”
We? he wanted to ask. You were the one who did all the work. He merely listened to your carefully instructed orders and made sure to complete them with the highest amount of efficiency he could achieve, which wasn’t as high as he expected you would be able to achieve. He really wanted to stop you from putting yourself down, reaching for what seemed to be the littlest and least important and trivial things and picking them apart for your own negativity. He suspected it was so that you didn’t get too high over your head and stayed more humble than not. Even when you said you were the best in the world or universe at this stuff, anyone could catch onto the joking tone you reserved for statements like those.
Before he could protest against your self-depreciation or even reply to your question, you had moved on to another topic. A topic he didn’t know about really, something to do with your coding and wires and electricity watts. He could have helped you if he was Tony or Shuri, but he was a man out of this time and information. His knowledge of electricity and technology only had advanced so far. You kept going on your little ramble, lips moving at a rapid speed and hands gesturing in the air, emphasizing on a few things on the computer screen. Even though he heard everything you said, and appreciated your voice, it didn’t necessarily mean he understood it. But he made sure to listen and try.
“What do you think?” You asked, looking up at him with eager eyes. He gave you a look because you had asked him this exact question before and it had ended in him red in the face and you falling off your chair in hysterics. You smirked and turned back to the screen, seemingly knowing exactly what he was giving you the look for.
He sighed and nodded, replying, “I actually think you’re the smartest person I know.” And that was true. You had corrected Tony over twenty times while he was working, evidently getting on his nerves when he gave you a glare the twenty-first time you decided to chime in and correct him. Even Shuri seemed to be duller next to you, having declared you extreme success with Bucky’s new chair and obsessively discussing gadgets together before you helped her finetune her new electromagnetic claws with some of your own ideas. She told Steve that he had to bring you to Wakanda the next time he came to visit.
“Oh, I know I’m smart,” you quipped, the teasing tone in your voice not going unnoticed by the blond.
“You’re also the nicest, kindest, and most genuine person I know,” he added, making you whip around and smack a hand over his lips, effectively sealing his mouth. His lips grazed the inside of your palm and he felt his neck heat up, no doubt a red hue had seeped into his cheeks.
“Hey! The walls have ears and I have a reputation to maintain,” you scolded playfully, looking around as if someone would pop out of the wall—Vision was the most likely to do that. Steve rolled his eyes overdramatically so that anyone in a mile radius could see the action as it happened. You giggled and pulled your hand away, only to pinch his cheek so that it would turn a brighter shade of red. He happened to find out you showed physical affection to anyone you really liked, and learned it after that night in the lab, and now wondered how he lived without having your hand graze his arm and pat his head while walking by.
“Seriously?” He deadpanned, watching you light up as he grinned when your hand dropped from his face. He unconsciously leaned towards you, something he became aware of when your eyes flickered around his face. He cleared his throat and moved back subtly, watching you carefully so that he could decipher some sort of emotion or reaction to his closeness, but you were a hard one to read. Your face was almost always stoic, save for when someone talked to you or caught you off-guard.
“I think that you should go show those to Barnes—” You stopped, eyes trailing over his shoulder and watching some movement. Steve looked over his shoulder too, seeing Bucky punch in the code and walk into the lab, holding a bag of take-out. “Speak of the devil.” You gave Bucky a smile, but showed more interest in the take-out bag when you held out your hand for it. Bucky rolled his eyes, smirking and handing it over to you.
“There’s enough for the two of you,” Bucky said, giving Steve a friendly pat on the shoulder as a greeting. You had taken out some burgers—one for you and three for Steve, mumbling about his metabolism and super-soldier serum—and a basket of large fries—you didn’t eat too many as Steve had noted.
“How much do you two even spend on groceries? With both your metabolisms and appetites, you guys have to spend at least a thousand a week just on groceries.” Steve knew you weren’t looking for a response, but Bucky answered before Steve could give you a proper sass-filled comeback.
“Around there, yeah.” Bucky proceeded to shrug and pull out a chair so that he could level with the two of you. “Lucky for us, Tony’s fucking loaded.” You let out a snort, unwrapping your burger and fixing some of the strands of lettuce that had fallen out. Steve grabbed one and unwrapped it a bit at the top before biting into it. You let out a moan at your first bite and Steve found himself choking on his bite, making Bucky hit his back a few times and you to hold out a can of soda. He took the soda with a mumbled thanks, still coughing and clearing his throat as he tried to get that moan echoing through his head to leave him alone. It seemed impossible when the echo grew louder.
“You good?” You asked, gently rubbing his bicep and leaning towards him just as he had done before. You had leaned closer though, face mere inches away from his when you scooted your stool closer to his, a leg between his.
“Yeah,” he whispered out, taking a large gulp of his soda and cringing when it burned his throat slightly. “What the fuck is this?”
“Root Beer, punk,” Bucky replied with a shake of his head, looking between him and you. He was trying to figure out what was happening and Steve had never despised the fact that his best friend was a trained spy and assassin more than in that moment. “That shit was worth like two or three bucks back in the 40s.”
“That’s about seventy bucks now,” you mumbled, calculations already finished in your head. Steve had once complained about some costages and you had quickly searched up how much one dollar back in the 40s was worth now. He reckoned that you remembered the numbers from that quick search just so you could convert the numbers to understand him. He pondered on the fact that he could do some searching of his own to understand you.
“Shit.” Bucky raked a hand through his hair, looking down at the blueprint that Steve had placed down when taking his burger. It had opened up, revealing the white lines that made up the chair’s outlining. Bucky winced at the sight of the chair and your face fell ever so slightly. Steve knew you were hoping that you wouldn’t have to let Bucky deal with a chair that looked exactly like the other one.
“Is—is this one okay?” You looked at Bucky with expectant eyes, flitting over to glance at Steve. He would have been surprised to see the worry building in your eyes if your stutter hadn’t outed you to him. Every little tick of yours was known to him now, even the way you drummed your fingers on your thigh when you were nervous.
“Yeah,” Bucky choked out, getting up suddenly, startling you. “I’m gonna—I’ve got to get to bed. I’ll see you two later.” You and Steve watched him leave the lab, stiff shoulders and posture too straight giving everything he thought about the chair away.
“On that happy note,” you started, turning to him with a smile on your face that looked more like a grimace, “we need to construct another model.” Steve finished his last burger as you opened up another file, not bothering to look at the time. Steve, nevertheless, caught the time and he shook his head. It was nearing nine at night—no wonder Bucky had brought them food—and you had been up before him, before five in the morning.
He didn’t know how you managed to get up earlier than him and he wasn’t going to question it either. You would probably reply with something like mad I beat you, old man?. He didn’t want to test his theory either, not wanting to be wrong and get another smartass comment from you instead. One that would make him hold back a proud grin and maybe even a fit of laughter. He leaned over you, grabbing the garbage and pouring it into the take-out bag before dumping that into the bin near the entrance.
“Come on, darling,” Steve said, the endearment becoming something like a habit now. Not a forced habit, not one bit, but a habit, nonetheless. When you refused to turn to at least acknowledge him, he strode over and put his hands on your shoulders, making you groan and throw your head back to look at him. He stifled his chuckles.
“No,” was your only retaliation to his pointed look. He smirked and let his hands trail down, earning a harsh glare from you before you shivered when his fingers brushed a speck of skin between your shirt and sweatpants.
“I’ll just carry you again, Y/N,” he stated with a shrug. You seemed to glare at him harder then, eyes narrowing slightly and bottom lip jutting out slightly. God, you were pouting at him. Although he would do anything if you asked with that pout on your face, your health wasn’t something he was going to negotiate, even with that adorable pout on your face. “It’s up to you: you walk or I carry.”
You sighed and leaned into his chest, making his heart flutter in a way that it hadn’t in a long time and it was all because you leaned back into his chest. You pressed your back into his chest and rested your head on his shoulder, groaning softly when you stretched your arms and legs in front of you. Your elbows and knees cracked and Steve let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding. You giggled slightly, poking Steve’s cheek as he looked down at you to see you grinning mischievously.
“Carry me, peasant,” you teased, arms flying backwards to hold onto his neck as your body shook with fits of laughter. Steve couldn’t help but laugh along with you, a voice deep inside of him telling him that you didn’t laugh as much as he wanted you to. He liked it when you laughed, nose scrunching up and eyes crinkling at the sides. He had to admit though, he didn’t laugh as much as he should either, except when he was with you. Even the smallest jokes or quips from you sent him into fits of laughter that took almost always an hour to reduce to snickers. His record, as you liked to call it, was three hours, falling into this loop of chuckles and full belly laughs because of a stupid joke you had muttered under your breath.
Coming back to the present, Steve realized that you were absolutely exhausted as he gripped your hip to help you stabilize yourself when you almost toppled over on the stool. Your eyes were trying to close on their own, shutting for a few moments too long for his liking. He knew that everyone on the team had trouble sleeping, but he didn’t expect you to have trouble too. It wasn’t nightmares that plagued you in the middle of the night; it was your own thoughts, the ones that would never leave your head. You had told him so with a shrug and dark circles forming under your eyes. It was why you kept working through the night.
“Turn around, brainiac,” Steve ordered softly, making you drop your arms from his neck and twist around so that he could see your face clearly. Lifeless skin and pale lips were just about tearing his heart into pieces as he cleared his throat. “Let’s get some sleep.”
You hummed, tapping a finger on your chin as you pretended to think over it for a second before nodding and saying, “‘Kay.” Steve grinned, pleased by your little fuss and helped you tidy up a bit before extending a hand for you to take. You ignored it and opened the door for the two of you, letting him go through first, even though all his instincts were telling him that it was just wrong to not be holding the door for the lady. His gentlemanly manners were screaming at him as the two of you ascended the stairs, telling him that he was wrong for not holding the door for you.
Before he could dive more further into it, you swayed and stumbled backwards right into his chest. His reflexes were fast enough to wrap an arm around your waist and make sure you weren’t going tumbling down the stairs. When you twisted around and gave him a slightly sheepish smile, he realized that his heart had dropped to his stomach and stayed there as you started mumbling an apology to him for crashing into him.
“No, it’s okay,” he started, hands still gripping your waist. “I’m just glad I was here to break your fall.” He glanced down the stairs, trying so hard not to imagine you laying at the bottom with your limbs sprawled around at odd angles like he had seen one too many times. You seemed to notice his panic and placed your hands on his chest, smiling up at him with a mischievous glint back in your eyes—something Steve was not expecting.
“I think that’s interference, Rogers,” you slurred, not really your best retort, but he could see the drowsiness on your face and your whole body was basically sagging against him the longer you both stood there on the stairs.
“I’m gonna carry you now, darlin’,” he said eventually. He had felt your hands slide down his chest slowly, stopping on his stomach when he finally spoke up and snapped your attention back to reality. Before you could protest—he knew you were going to—he bent down and slipped an arm behind your knees and across the middle of your back to pick you up. You seemed to decide not to argue with him, squirming just a tad bit and then relaxing as he started to walk.
At some point during the pathway from your lab to your rooms, your head lolled to the side and rested against his shoulder, deep and regulated breaths making your chest rise and fall. He tried not to stare at your peaceful face for too long, feeling like he could probably get lost in your beauty and lose his focus on his surroundings and crash into the wall or something. That would be embarrassing and he would probably hear it for the rest of his life from you, non-relenting from teasing him for it. He could hear your voice in his head, poking fun at him for running into a wall.
He chuckled underneath his breath as he rounded the corner into the hallway where both of your rooms were situated. When he reached your room, he debated on waking you up and leaving you to find your way in and get set for bed, but something didn’t let him do that. He carefully opened the door with the hand under your knees and went in, leaving it slightly open behind him. You hadn’t stirred so Steve whispered your name.
“Y/N? Hey, darlin’. Wake up.” Your head left his shoulder, letting cool air hit the warm spot as you blinked and recognized your room. His hands tightened on you as he lowered you down and let you keep an arm on him to steady yourself when you swayed in fatigue.
“You should’ve woken me up the second I fell asleep, Rogers,” you mumbled, eyes trained on the unmade bed and rumpled papers on it. He hadn’t had the chance to look around properly, taking a quick glance around. The room was neat and tidy, omitting your bed. Everything seemed to be in their respective places and you seemed to have a place for every little thing, from the tiniest eraser to the biggest 3-D model. The layout of the room was similar to his, with slight differences in the placement of the furniture.
“You could use all the rest you can get,” he replied with a shrug, walking backwards to the door. “Goodnight, Y/N.”
“No kiss tonight?” You teased quietly, eyes still on the bed as if you had never seen it before. The question made him pause and ponder on your actions from the last few weeks. You had shrugged him off each time he tried to come close to you, ignoring his hand or shoving it off every single time, so why did you want a kiss from him? Sure, you had that teasing tone in your voice, but he had heard the slightest frustration behind it. As if you couldn’t understand why he hadn’t made another move for another kiss on you.
And it irked him. Not because you had withdrawn yourself from him—he knew how to take a hint—but because it was getting confusing.
He scoffed and said, “Feels like you don’t want anything to do with me, to be honest, Y/N.”
“What?” You turned around to face him clearly, eyes telling him that you were just as confused as him. You crossed your arms over your torso and tilted your head in that cute way of yours, eyes trailing over his figure to examine his body language. It wasn’t the first time you had tried to figure his emotions out with his body gesture. You had done it multiple times with his reactions to models and drawings of the chair, along with some inappropriate jokes you had dared to pull off in front of him.
“I mean you hate when I touch you—”
“I don’t hate it when you touch me,” you whispered, not even caring to hear the rest of the sentence. His eyes darted to yours, trying to catch a trace of a lie in them and seeing if you were telling him the truth. Even if you didn’t hate it, you had to dislike it, right? There was no other reason for you to pull away as if he had burned you every time he found the courage to graze your hand with his.
“Then why—”
“Because I don’t need the help,” you huffed, letting your arms drop to your sides and fist your hands when they shook a bit. Steve knew that little tick of yours; your hands would shake when you were trying to find the right words. Maybe you just needed the right question for the right answer.
“What if I want to help you?” He asked, taking a step closer to you when you refused to look at him and instead stared at the wall behind him. His guts were telling him to abort the mission and run the other way as they had that day in Germany and the day in Wakanda, but those had turned out okay. He still had Bucky and half of the universe was safe.
“I wouldn’t want to be a burden on you, Steve.”
You called him Steve. That had to mean something since you outright ignored everyone’s first names and went straight for their last names. Maybe it was out of habit now, calling him Steve as he called you darling, but there was still a chance that you meant something by it and Steve was going for that chance. No matter how small or big it was, he was going to push luck like he had never before.
“You could never be a burden on me, Y/N,” he murmured gently, stepping closer until you were within arm’s length. He extended a hand to you and you hesitantly slipped yours into his, soft skin against a calloused palm. He tucked a stray hair behind your ear with his other hand, pulling on your hand to make you step a bit closer to him.
“You might not think so now, but later, when you get bored of this, of me, you’ll be running the other way,” you said, quietening down so much that he had to strain all of his focus on hearing you. He was going to hear you no matter what.
“I wouldn’t.” His heart was beating in his chest and just about had started to hurt his ribs. “I wouldn’t be able to, darlin’. I’m either all in or all out, you should know that by now.” That dragged an airy chuckle out of your pretty lips he had been eyeing without realizing it and his heart started to calm down before it broke his bones.
“You say that now—”
“I’d do anything to prove it.” And he was ready to get down on his knees to beg for you to hear him. You studied him for a few moments, silence ringing in the air as he squeezed your hand for his own grounding. The next few seconds were the longest seconds he had spent looking at you—though the view was as pretty as it could get. He let you take a step back, heart skipping a beat or two, and then two steps forward so that your bodies had mere inches left between them.
“Kiss me,” you whispered, “properly or I won’t believe you.” You already did believe him. He knew you believed him with the way you had stepped forward twice, the kiss was just a formality. You closed your eyes when his hand came to your chin to tip your face up slightly to relish the moment just as he wanted to, watching your body shiver when his hand slipped behind your neck and the other came to the small of your back to pull your body to press on his.
Then he slotted his lips against yours and let out a groan at the taste of you. Your hands moved on their own, sliding up his chest to entangle in his hair and thumb grazing the small hairs on the nape of his neck. His lips moved slowly and gently, not wanting to chase you away with a wrong move, but once you dragged your tongue on his bottom lip and nipped at it, he let you be the one to deepen the kiss. You had initiated it, but Steve had no problem taking over, both of you fighting for domination before you submitted and let Steve run the show. Once the breath in the two of you had run out, you both pulled away, panting and resting your foreheads against each other.
You let out a small giggle as Steve grinned and tugged you impossibly close to him.
“You’re, uh you’re good at that for an old man,” you teased, making him roll his eyes playfully and nip at your bottom lip as you had to his. You bit down on your lip when he dragged his face away to look at you clearly, preventing the smile that was trying to break out on your face. Steve let his thumb pull out from between your teeth and grinned when he noticed the flustered state that little action left you in.
“I’m a lot better at other things, too, darlin’,” he mumbled, feeling the adrenaline that was keeping you awake start to drain out quickly. You were holding yourself up with your hands on his shoulders now, leaning against him as your eyes darted to the door in front of yours. “But I don’t think now’s the right time to show you.” You snorted and flitted your eyes back to him.
“I’ve still got a few moves on you,” you retorted, putting your forehead on his chest and yawning. Steve rubbed your back and kissed your forehead, embracing you tightly.
“Get some sleep and we’ll argue about it tomorrow,” he suggested, a lightness to his tone that made you look up at him and smile sleepily.
“Sure.” You pressed your hands to his chest, pushing slightly to nudge yourself straight. “Then you can admit I’m the best.” Still, that teasing tone remained in your words as you glanced towards his door again and, this time, he caught the hidden message.
“Want me to come back?” He asked, making sure he had read everything right this time. He was wishing and praying to whatever god there was that he had read your eyes right this time, that he was hearing you right this time. When you looked at him, eyes shining a bit brighter and lips tugging a bit higher, he knew he had read you right.
“I can’t ask—”
“Ask me,” he cut in, raising an eyebrow and smirking softly. “Ask me to come back.” You observed him for a second, hesitancy was clear in your eyes, but he knew it wasn’t that you didn’t want him now. It was hesitancy to ask him for more than you usually received. You licked your lips and sucked in a breath.
“Come back to me,” you blurted, hands fisting the fabric stretched across his chest. “You make it quiet.” Steve was caught slightly off-guard by that statement, not realizing what you were referring to until a few seconds later. His hands tightened on your hip and he let a soft smile grace his face.
“You make it quiet for me, too.” He squeezed your hip once before adding, “I’ll come back tonight as long as I get woken up with kisses.”
“You’d be crazy to think I’m not kissing you again.”
There were murmured whispers that night again, but these ones lulled you both to sleep, having your fair share of the night’s kisses. It was safe to say that this wasn’t the last night this routine happened, but that’s a different story. A story for another night.

Blind Reflections
A fanfic about Jake having a great group of friends and daddy issues, also I ship him with everybody
This is a teaser of my fanfic, so not a full chaper
characters: Jake Lockley, Matt Murdock, Karen Page, Foggy Nelson, Jessica Jones, Elias Spector
tags/warnings: This is a general fanfic, but it leans mostly on the angsty side, nothing too angsty on this teaser though. Also no beta read, just the gang being very potective friends and Jake having dady issues because duh. Also I mention Judaism but I am not Jewish.
The reason I am posting this is so people who are interested in the fanfic to comment on the post so I can notify them when chapter one drops.
Words: 900
Chapter name: Elias Spector
The man on the other side of the door with dark curls and wet hair was holding his phone tightly.
There was a knock at the door, nobody knew where they were living here except-
“I’m sorry I didn’t know where else to go” Elias Spector said.
Foggy took a step backwards to let him in again but nobody else moved, they just stared at him, he is not a threat, at least not for them but they wouldn’t do that to Jake, or the others, especially not Karen who was blocking him like a protective mother.
Elias realized his unexpected visit wasn’t enough to be welcomed so he proceeded to explain “Someone broke into my house, they, they started a fire, I was supposed to be there! They were going to kill me, please I need to know what’s going on, what is my son involved in, who are you people? Let me in, I have a right to know! You don’t-”
“Karen…” Matt said. “We have to let him in.”
Karen hesitated but was surprised when she looked around and everyone looked welcomed.
“Not for long” she said and moved to allow him to enter.
“Thank you, thank you really!”
“Don’t thank us yet” Matt added as they guided him to the living room and Foggy filled him a glass of water, putting it in front him, in the center of the coffee table.
“So, when did this happen?” Asked Jessica, who by the looks of it wasn’t happier than Karen to allow him to be there.
“The police called me twenty minutes ago, when I was gathering my things at the hotel. Who would do such a thing? Haven’t my family suffered enough?”
“Sir, is there anyone you know that would have the motive to do that?”
“No I-”
“Look, you’re… it doesn’t have to be connected to your son’s life choices, who we still as we told you before know very little about.” That was of course now a lie, but he didn’t need to know that.
“What she means is…” Matt interrupted “you’re a Rabbi, there are many antisemitic organizations and individuals we need to look into.”
That seemed to have offended Elias “Never in the last twenty years my community has suffered such an attack! We live a peaceful life and just because we’re Jewish doesn’t mean, everything has to be connected to it!”
“But you are Jewish…” Jessica added, not giving a shit if she angered him more.
“And my son is an international criminal!” he finally yelled, making the others look at each other, hopping his son was still asleep, Karen stood up and went to check on him.
“Sir you don’t need to yell we can hear you clearly.” Matt commented, as he indeed was hearing him, more that clearly, over the sound of his heart and his breaths incoherently leaving his mouth, making each syllable sound different, to him. The anxiety and the fear made him sound like if he had just run a marathon, feelings that overcame the furry that had started to raise.
“You can hear me? Because I think you can’t! Two different people have come to me in the last ten days looking for information about Marc; urgently! And I know my son hasn’t made the brightest choices or the best connections, I am not a fool I know who he is, he is dangerous, and I will not allow him to bring any more pain to my family.”
The bedroom door squawked slightly open but closed with force immediately, making everyone turn around.
“Sorry, I’ll be back in a second!” Karen said from the other side but Matt had heard the entire conversation behind the closed doors but he didn’t have to, he knew exactly what was going to happen so he excused himself to go help Karen.
“What family?” Jessica asked, looking straight into his eyes. “It’s just you, isn’t it?”
“Jessica-” Foggy tried to stop her before she made him yell again but the door opened, this time nobody was hiding the person behind it.
Elias stayed still, he put his glass down and slowly stood up, without breaking eye contact with the door. He rubbed his fingertips together just like Steven uses to do. He would have looked down in shame, if he wasn’t so surprised, or maybe we wouldn’t realize why he should feel ashamed. No matter how anyone was feeling, the truth was, Elias Spector was standing in the middle of the living room, his son avoiding his look from across the room, only stealing a couple of glimpses, as hard as he tried to stop himself, just to make him realize that what’s happening is true and not just some voice, some distant memory of nightmare echoing in his head.
“M, Marc.” Elias tried to ask but it came out less that a question and more like an announcement, a deduction.
His son from across the room stayed still like a pole, looking at the fine details of the carpet, probably counting all the red flowers. His hands and feet where running cold and he forced himself to speak in the coldest more distant way possible but his voice was still shaking with all of his feelings in the end of every second word.
“I have a house in the west side of the state, you should be safe there, I’ll inform a friend to stay with you, now leave, go back to your hotel.”
That's it folks, comment if you want to read more

chapter 1: new beginnings
words: 4,071
Rating: teen and up audiences
Everything happens so fast.
Wanda can’t even remember what they are doing before they hear gunshots fired and run, thinking Hydra has finally caught up to them, only to find themselves in the middle of a fight. And then Pietro takes a hit because Wanda fails to protect him. She must have screamed because, out of nowhere, a man holding a bow with a quiver full of arrows shows up, kneeling beside them.
“I can help.”
Wanda shouldn’t trust him. She shouldn’t— doesn’t trust anyone besides Pietro, but Pietro is lying on the ground, bleeding profusely and breathing raggedly, and Wanda doesn’t know what to do. All she can think about is that she is losing the only family she has left. And she can’t go through that, not again. She won’t survive.
So she accepts the offer.
She boards a jet with her brother, the man who nearly killed him, and the woman he had been trying to kill, but ends up saving for some reason. It looks like he doesn’t understand his assignment very well, but she doesn’t care. She doesn’t care about anything but her brother’s safety.
She needs him to be okay.
“I’m sorry,” the man—Clint, he introduces himself after he offers to help, keeps whispering, looking sorrowfully at Pietro’s prone form.
They got caught in the crossfire between him and the woman, and her powers weren’t enough to protect them. She tries so hard to hate Clint and blame him for their current predicament, but the truth is that she has no one to blame but herself. Every single fucked up thing they have gone through has been her fault.
“He is all I have,” Wanda murmurs, fingers interlaced firmly against his to make sure he is still there, still warm, still breathing. “I cannot lose him.”
“You won’t,” Clint promises, but Wanda has been on the receiving end of too many empty promises to believe him.

I had the saddest idea.. One of my favorite AUs to write is modern!bbf!vetran bucky.. I just need to know if I should write this
DISCLAIMER! I'm not romanticizing BPD,PTSD, DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, SELFHARM, OR SUICIDAL THOUGHTS
Many fics, good or bad, tend to either romanticize or not display mental health issues&disorders in a correct way .
This would be correctly displayed Mental states.
This fic would include Bucky reaching out to either reader,Sam, or Steve ..for resurance and comfort.
This would either be a very long one-shot (15-45k wc)
Or Split into multiple parts from (45-225k wc)
SHOULD I write this ?? I'm having a big debate on this and would like to know what you think.. and if you have any ideas for it
If this gets shown interest, I will Upload to A03

My HCs of what if Pietro survives AOU :
. Okay so he still is injured after AOU, but luckily he gradually recovers his wounds with the assistances of SHIELD medics
. While Wanda is more open to explore American cultures, Pietro is....more guarded and tried his best to help protect Wanda from racist thugs tryna slander them
. And then upon eventually hearing that Vision and Wanda falling for each other, Pietro literally asks Vision to come up to him and basically interrogates Vision
. It took Pietro 6 months to recover his battle wounds btw
. Yeah, in that interrogation, Wanda flew in and passionately defended Vision
. And then Pietro gave them his blessing after that
. . Pietro defo tells Vision a, ' You hurt her, you're toast ' talk
. Cue Civil War, Pietro, being absolutely furious over Wanda and Vision's breakup over the Sokovian accords, has to be physically restrained by Wanda and several others siding with Steve at those points from punching Vision in the face
. That didn't stop Pietro absolutely brutal fighting with Vision in the airport battle....before Wanda bravely jumps in front if Vision before Pietro can seriously maim Vision.....
. .....Only to unintentionally maim HIS OWN SISTER INSTEAD
. All at once, Pietro froze in horror and struggles to find words to apologize.
. Yet Wanda, even with her injuries, brutally screeches at her own brother in Sokovian, ' DONT YOU DARE HURT MY LOVE!!!!! '
. That was enough for Pietro to flee
. It took some time for Wanda to forgive her brother.
. Pietro was guilty over unintentionally hurting his own sister for QUITE some time
. Needless to say, during those 2 years Wanda and Vision are in Edinburgh
. Pietro went into a low profile in Paris for 2 years
. Eventually, through several extra encouragements from Vision, Pietro and Wanda FINALLY made up over facetime after 3 months of not seeing each other
. And some months before IW, Pietro flew to Edinburgh to attend his sister and Vision's wedding
. In IW, Pietro watched his own sister getting dusted
. Cue him suffering depression after that for QUITE some time
. Pietro quickly becomes a SWORD agent ( with recommendations from Tony Stark himself ) after Endgame, and battles with alcoholism for some time due to his sister's disappearance and Vision's death
. After Endgame, after his happy reunion with his sisters, dude actually thought she moved to New Jersey after that
. But then, when he was about to visit her....he found himself sucked into this sit com episode Wanda made.
. After Wandavision, Pietro is one of the only people that contacted with Wanda in Serbia ( he didn't know about the whole Darkhold until in MoM )
. And then he and his SWORD agents be doing anything they can to stop his sister's rampage
. Yet eventually after hearing how Wanda was recovering in the Mhurruk Imperial Asylum, Dr Strange gives him a crystal ball to communicate with his sister and Telenor himself to visit his sister whenever he needs
. Now, he is currently cooperating with SHIELD to handle the whole Skrull secret invasion

Hi everyone! I just wanted to start off with a huge thank you for all of the support that you've given me since I started writing and I can't wait to continue to grow on here and meet and talk to more of you! Thank you for being so patient with me as I took a short break from writing and from creating content but I am back and have more time on my hands now!

Yelena Belova

Kate Bishop
Peter Parker (MCU Peter)
*NEW CHARACTER TO REQUEST FOR

If you want more than one of the characters above to be in the blurb then that's fine too! Just specify in your request :) You can also specify certain scenarios that may accompany the prompt you chose. Go wild! I bet we can come up with some pretty cool stories together.
The blurbs will probably be in between 500 and 800 words, I may get carried away every now and again if I really like an idea and turn it into a longer piece.
There is currently no limit to how many submissions will be accepted, I might close my requests though once I feel like I have enough. Thanks again for all of your support! Here is the list of prompts:
“You’re so falling for her/him.”
“Why is there blood on your shirt?”
“You’re already so wet for me princess.”
“Look I’m not trying to ask you to marry me, I’m trying to save your life!”
“I’m not mad, but I will be soon.”
“Okay, we’re stuck here together so we might as well make the best of it.”
“Besides I HATE flirting with someone who is supposed to be on the same side as me.”
“Is that my shirt?”
“There’s only one bed.”
“Let’s play spin the bottle.”
“Yn, you’re drunk.”
“Shut up.” “Make me.”
“I’ve never done this before.”
“I told you not to fall in love with me.”
“Kiss me again.”
“Stop looking at me like that.”
“Stop calling me sweetheart.”
“We shouldn’t be doing this…”
“I had a dream about you last night.”
“The door’s locked, don’t worry.”
“Shut up and let me help you.”
“I want to wake up next to you every day.”
“Here, take my hoodie.”
“You 2 make such a cute couple.” “Oh…, we’re not a couple.” “Well, you would be a very cute couple.”
“I’m way out of your league.”
“So, are you guys dating or…?”
“Christ, put some clothes on!”
“Be nice (insert characters name).”
“Fuck you look so good.”
“Bring your cute Lil ass over here.”
“You’re such a dork.”
“I’m finding it extremely difficult to not kiss you right now.”
“I had a bad dream again.”
“Can you stay?”
“I’ll take you down (characters L/N or Y/L/N).”
“You weren’t supposed to hear/see that.”
“Come sit on my lap.”
“Just wait until we get home…”
“You’re so sexy when you’re mad.”
“(insert name) I can tell when you’re lying…
If you have any questions feel free to let me know via DM, by commenting on this post or by sending an ask! Can't wait to see what we create together!

I believe in you; Clint Barton x reader
*Author’s note*
Well this was another request kept in the works and depending if I’m too late or not for my lovely bilingual anon you might already have started your nursing school (which congrats btw hopefully everything worked out) so this little drabble of sorts is dedicated to them and to anyone else that’s starting college (or a new grade in general).
Not really any warnings maybe a swear word or two and some fluff/maybe angst. But mainly I just did some basic research on how medical school/nursing programs work so if I’m wrong and there’s something I missed, any nursing/medical grads out there PLEASE let me know so that I can go back and fix it. I didn’t put too much detail just skimmed over the process but I hope it was the right way I did it.
Anyways enjoy my lovely readers and until next time.

You know the one thing they never tell you when you’re applying to college, how to maintain the stress levels of what’s to come with leaving childhood behind and fully becoming an adult.
While I am excited, don’t get me wrong, I’ve always wanted to be a nurse ever since I begged my mom for my first Baby Alive doll. Taking care of her, changing her diaper, feeding her, all that stuff.  Then came the day when Cooper Barton was born.  Yep that Cooper, along with Lila and Nathaniel.  Since our moms have been friends since they were in college, it was only a matter of time before I became friends with the Barton kids, especially since I was considered the ‘other Big sister’.
That also meant I had known Clint Barton long before he was famous for being apart of the Avengers team.  But ever since bringing everyone back from the Blip and the world trying to return to normal, he’s happily retired and staying with the family that he lost for 5 years (while also raising me since I had lost my parents in the Blip).
But back to what I was saying, applying for nursing school isn’t like applying for your regular old college.  Not only do you need to go to regular college and get some credits as well as take the necessary tests, you have to volunteer as nursing homes, you have to go to an interview with the school, and the most tedious thing of all—waiting.
The waiting portion is what really had me on edge, especially since the school was trying to re-instate students and staff that had been Blipped, look at new applications, it was a mess but I’ll spare the long waiting story and just say that after awhile of not hearing anything, I finally heard back from them and found out that I had been accepted into the Nursing school of my dreams.
Like I said, while I am excited I’m also quite nervous about it as well.  Cause not only is it the most prestige nursing school in the country, it’s also out of state in Durham, North Carolina.  And moving to a whole new state is a scary thing in itself, nobody will know me there and I’ll know no one there, I’ll be alone in school as I’m working towards my nursing degree.
I was sitting on top of the treehouse that uncle Clint had built for me and Lila when we were little.  It was at the peak of sunset and everyone was inside the house still celebrating my acceptance into college.  Mom and dad spent all morning setting up for the Barton’s to come over for the party and since 2pm the two families have been barbequing, watching a football game, and just chatting away.
But right now I needed a break from the family so I just came out here to the old tree house (that I hadn’t really been in since I started high school) and a wave of nostalgia came over me.  Seeing the old polaroid pictures I took with my camera of me and Lila, our old drawings we did together, and the famous sign we’d tape to the door.
GIRLS ONLY, NO BOYS ALLOWED
I smile softly and stroked the rainbow letters we both wrote it in as the memories of what Lila and I had in here played in my head.
“Thought you might be up here.” Uncle Clint’s voice spoke up. I jumped and turned to see him holding up the door-floor (that’s what Lila and I used to call it) up.  “God I remember all the times your dad and I caught you and Lila up here. This was practically your first apartment. Minus the pluming and AC unit.” I softly chuckled.
“Been a long time since I saw this place. Wanted to check and see if anything changed with it.”
“Probably not. Once you girls grew up, you didn’t really come up here as much when you were kids. But I still kept up with any repairs that needed to be done, just in case you changed your mind.”
“And I thank you for that. I really needed to come back in here.” I said stroking through some of the old pictures.
“Everything okay?”
“Can I be honest with you uncle Clint?”
“Yeah, yeah absolutely. But first I must ask permission from Princess Mi amore Cadenza of the Crystal Empire to enter hers and Princess Francesca Banana Lobella Lollipop’s castle in the sky.” I chuckled at the silly Princess names Lila and I came up with when we were little.
“I can’t believe you still remember those names.”
“I’m losing my hearing, not my memory.” Clint teased.
“But yes you have permission from Princess Cadence.” I said shortening the nickname of my pretend Princess title.  Uncle Clint climbed up the rest of the way into the tree house and closed the door behind him before taking a seat on one of the old beanbag chairs we had.  “Alright kid, talk. What’s on your mind?”
“First I just wanna say that I’m not complaining about the party. It’s awesome it really is that you and aunt Laura and my parents did this for me. And I am happy to know that I’m gonna be living out my dream of becoming the first Doctor in the family but—it all feels to fast. I mean it feels like yesterday Lila and I were up here talking about her next heist to get the cookies from the top of the fridge, and now all of a sudden it…….”
“Feels like childhood is slipping away.” He finished for me.  “Like you’re entering a bigger world than you first thought it would entail.”
“How did you—”
“Because I was there myself. Once I joined SHIELD and before the Avengers became a thing.”
“Bull.”
“It’s true. The biggest thing before I knew Gods and aliens existed were terrorists and spies. Basic espionage stuff that you see in the movies. When Loki came along the job became—a lot more than what I was used to. So much so that there were times I thought I wasn’t really needed. I’m just a guy with a bow and arrow, that’s all I had to bring to every fight we went to.”
“But you looked pretty cool everytime you did it.” Uncle Clint ruffled my hair.
“Thanks shrimp. Now I know that these are two totally different scenarios but there is some common ground to both our fears. I was needed to be the ‘human aspect’ that the Avengers needed. Someone to help keep them grounded whenever things got too tough on the job. While you, you’ve always had a healing hand.” He took my hand between his and gave it a gentle squeeze in reassurance.  “And the world’s gonna be lucky to have someone who is doing it for the good of the patient, and not for the money. Or the medal of neurosurgeon, whatever the hell it is they call for giving Doctors rewards.”
“And again I am psyched but also a bit scared. Especially since I’ll be in a new state where I don’t know a single person there.”
“What about that friend of yours you made in college uhh—what was her name Robin? What about her?”
“She’s going to the University of Pennsylvania to be closer with her grandparents who need her.” He nodded solemnly.
“Well I still wouldn’t worry. You’ve always been pretty good at making friends. And you know we’re all just a phone call or facetime away if you ever get homesick.”
“Yeah I know.” I mumbled.
“Hey,” he scooted closer to me and wrapped an arm around me pulling me closer to him.  “You’re ready for this. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that you’re gonna be the best Doctor that’s ever gonna live. Even better than Doctor Strange.” We both softly laughed.  “You’ve worked too hard to toss the scrubs now, my goddaughter is not a quitter. And she never says no.”
“Thanks Uncle Clint. And I don’t just mean for the talk but for everything. Even during the Blip.”
“I was hardly there for you during that time I—I was in a really dark place and you needed me but I…..”
“You still came whenever you could. It’s not like I needed you to help me get into college or to baby me, I was already in the midst of my first semester when it happened. The first thing you did was call me when the world went to shit. And when it came time for the summers or holidays, you still took the time to at least give me a proper welcome home before your Ronan business.” I leaned my head against his shoulder nuzzling into it.  “I don’t think I could’ve gone through my remaining years of college without you uncle Clint. You may have not always been there physically, but there was the emotional support whenever I needed you.”
“I’ll always be there for you kid. No matter how old you get.” He leaned his forehead against mine before he choked out. “And—I know Nat……she—she would’ve also been proud of you too.”
“I miss her.”
“Me too kid, me too.” His arms wrapped around me as I did the same for him and we embraced each other as tight as we could.
After staying up in the treehouse for a few more minutes, the two of us decided to head back inside for the rest of the evening where our two families spent the rest of the night talking until the Barton’s decided to call it a night and head home.
As they left, uncle Clint’s words rang in my head and the weight that was on my heart early was now lifted as I had a more positive outlook than the nagging negative from earlier.
“You were outside for quite a long time earlier sweetheart, you okay?” my mom asked.
“I’m fine mom. Just needed to clear my head. Uncle Clint also provided some good advice.”
“Well that’s good. But also know that your father and I are also here for you as well, you know that right?”
“I do.”
“Alright well I hate to treat you like a child but it’s time for bed. In the morning we’ve got a lot of packing and sorting to do before your big move this weekend.”
“Yes mama. Goodnight, love you.”
“Love you too sweetie.” She kissed my head and I went up to my room and fell fast asleep after a long day.

Welcome to my 1000 followers celebration! I don't even know how so many of you decided to follow me and give me support throughout these few past years. This is crazy enough as it is but honestly can't get my head down from the clouds sometimes. This blog has become one of my safe places, even though sometimes there are things I wish I hadn't seen, and all of you make it that way. I don't know how many of the thousand still interact with my blog and how many are just there, but I really do appreciate every single one of you. If I could I would message every blog following me.
I wanted to do something a bit more “me” I guess. Seeing that this blog started just for incorrect marvel quotes (literally in the name) I decided that you should be able to make your drabbles/oneshots/series based on an incorrect quote that I have posted. I thought it would be fun, but I did give the option of regular prompts and some fun AUs are listed below as well. Most prompts and AUs have been found on Pinterest.
If you don’t want to participate, please consider reblogging! It might give others a chance to maybe escape their writer’s block as writing challenges have often done for me!
Rules:
Send me an ask or message with which incorrect quote/prompt you are using. Please make sure to add it at the beginning or bold it.
If you are not participating, can you please reblog for signal boost? I would really appreciate it.
You can pick an MCU character. You can also do any MCU ships, but no incest like Th*rki or St*rker.
Use any of the incorrect quotes or prompts written below
Two people per prompt/incorrect quote
Three prompts per person and one incorrect quote per person
AUs are completely optional (but definitely encouraged)
It can be a drabble, oneshot, or series
Warnings must be given properly. Any warnings that you may have missed, I will let you know and please do add it. In addition to this, I will not be accepting any dark!fics and/or any rape or anything of the sort. If you want to run something by me, by all means go ahead.
Deadline: October 14th, 2024

it’s in the air we’re breathing (can you taste the freedom?)
chapter summary: natasha wants to try to be more than just a trained killer, but it’s a work in progress.
notes: i should have probably stuck to my plan to at least try to write the majority of this story before posting, but i couldn’t help myself. so you guys are getting these as i write them, and this one isn’t even beta approved. it’s barely proofread. i promise to do better for the next one, but i hope you guys enjoy it anyway. let’s do this!
chapter 2: this is me trying
words: 2,485
rating: teen and up audiences
“You’ll break them. You are made of marble.”
“What if I fail?”
“You never fail.”
Natasha knows those words are wrong. She has known all along and, yet, she has tried — tried to be her, the ruthless assassin she was training to be, the talented spy, able to topple regimes from within then disappear without a trace, the General’s favorite.
But ever since they gave her a family — a lie, just a fabricated ruse, but a family nonetheless — Natasha knew she could never be her, not truly.
“Your pain only makes you stronger.”
“Don’t let them take your heart.”
Those hushed whispers have burrowed into her brain much more than Madame B’s cruel taunts ever have, and Natasha knows it’s only because of them that she’s still there, still alive. No amount of psychological conditioning has been able to wipe Melina’s final plea from her heart.
She keeps those words stashed neatly away in little boxes in her mind, being Natalia when she needs to be and Natasha — the blue-haired little girl riding her bike down warm suburban streets, stomach full of peanut butter sandwiches and a heart full of love — when she wants to be.
Want. Such a dangerous thing to feel. To want, to hope, to love — all weak, useless emotions that she shouldn’t have.
Natalia doesn’t, but Natasha does.
Natasha’s wants, hopes, and loves are so loud that they threaten to suffocate Natalia sometimes. She strangles them and buries them deep beneath her marble walls, but if there’s one thing she’s learned during those three years in Ohio is that no layer of marble or iron is enough to keep those feelings away.
One day, she allows them to overcome her.
Natasha’s just as fierce as Natalia, if not more, because she uses her emotions as assets. Natalia takes over again, but they’re free now. They’re free to feel, to choose, to live, but that’s not something they are ever taught how to do in the Red Room.
In a moment of weakness, she asks for help, but this time someone listens before everything fades to black.

bucky barnes x fem!reader
summary: everyone thinks you're dating bucky, except yourself.
word count: 2.4k
warnings: 18+ minors dni. miscommunication (i love this trope, sue me), angst with a happy fluffy ending, quite stubborn reader, implied smut if you squint, usage of petnames such as baby and doll. lowercase for basically everything.
i haven't finished anything in decades, but i suddenly had an idea just now and decided to write it down. surprisingly, i finished it? might have a lot of mistakes and such since i haven't proofread it yet. also, sorry for using lowercase for this, i kinda like how it looks. hope you enjoy this one!

“you're confusing me. so... you're not dating bucky?'
wanda tilted her head, confusion etched on her face as you spent your weekly girl's night with natasha. it usually consisted of eating food you all desired, drinking until you got wasted, and spilling secrets to one another.
although tonight, you weren't sure if you had any secrets to spill.
"as far as i know, no. we're just friends, teammates. nothing else," you answered with a heavy sigh. "can we talk about something else?"
"hold your horses, young lady! we are not skipping this topic again. you obviously want a label but he isn't giving you one!" wanda protested. she has been constantly asking about you and bucky's relationship for the past weeks, and you always had the same answer. you don't know.
"have you never talked about it with bucky? he looks at you like you'd get lost if he looks away for a second. not a single soul in the tower would think that you're just friends," natasha interjected, taking another sip from the bottle of beer she held. she had a point, as always. "if he's just playing with you, which i highly doubt for barnes, then just end whatever that is. you deserve better than having doubts and confusion, babe."
you've tried asking him multiple times, but every attempt felt like you were stepping on his boundaries. after years of being controlled by hydra, you knew it was possible that he'd hate the feeling of being rushed and entering a relationship that could potentially feel like a cage to him.
but natasha was right. your "relationship" was no longer anything friendly. he sleeps in your bed, claiming he slept better in it, and wakes up beside you to shower you with kisses. none of you even tried to hide it after some time. you always cooked your meals and ate them together, casually feeding one another and stealing kisses in between. you even stopped going on dates and you had no idea if you were exclusive. you deserved to know what your relationship with bucky was, but you were too scared to lose everything once you asked.
"we're not dating. i only see him as a friend, so you can both stop worrying about me." you lied through your teeth, your chest aching as you realised how stupid this was. you sighed and faked a smile, shifting the attention to natasha. "so, tell me about your date with steve! how was the first ever date of captain america since the 40s?"
wanda was distracted by the question, immediately bombarding the now blushing widow with questions. on the other hand, your mind flew away for a minute, finally deciding to get an answer from bucky.
Tumblr media
the annual ball that tony stark held for, well, nearly anyone, was nearing. you only had two weeks left, and you haven't even gone out to find something to wear. it was hard to find any motivation to do all that effort when the person you've been waiting to ask you as his date hasn't asked you yet.
although, bucky had a tendency to get shy and hold back. you knew that. so here you were, standing behind the doors to the gym, knowing that bucky would be training at this hour. you still haven't asked him the question you were supposed to ask him, so you decided to do it all at once.
after you've finished your small pep talk, you opened the door to enter the room and your first instinct was to search for bucky.
considering that he was a huge chunk of a man, he was easy to find. however, the sight of him standing in front of a woman that was too close for your comfort wasn't delightful.
he didn't see you entering the room since he was facing the opposite direction, conversing with the agent that happened to be training as well. she had the sweetest and flirtiest smile on her face, bringing her hand up to his arm, slowly caressing it. you didn't mean to easily hear their conversation as you walked closer.
"so, do you happen to have someone for me to have as a date for the ball? i don't want to be lonely on that night, sergeant," the agent said with an extra pout, swaying her hips side to side like a child asking for candy.
"oh, yeah? i think i have someone for you," bucky replied, breaking your heart into pieces with how enthusiastic he was with his answer. "i'm sure you'll—"
you sniffed. unconsciously. not knowing that your tears were already falling, causing your nose to get stuffy. how pathetic, you thought.
your little sniff caught the attention of both the agent and bucky, looking at you in shock. although, the girl was more pleasantly surprised than the opposite. thankfully, you already had your tears wiped before they could see them.
"oh, we didn't see you there!" she greeted you with your name. "we were just talking about our date for this year's ball. who are you bringing?"
"i haven't decided yet, no one's worth it even if i try," you answered bitterly. "so you're going together?"
before bucky could answer, the agent already had her arm wrapped around his, happily smiling at your question. "yeah! amazing, right? i actually thought you two had a thing, but i guess not. glad things worked out in the end."
and that was your last straw. "well, enjoy yourselves. i have to go and find natasha."
you turned to leave, ignoring the loud calls of bucky. you were glad that you never asked him about your relationship and the ball. you were going to be hurt either way.
Tumblr media
you spent the next hours stuck in your room, body covered with a thick sheet as you ranted about your frustrations to friday.
it was silly, you knew that, but you refused to call natasha and wanda to remind you of your stupidity and decided to let an ai robot listen to your problems instead.
"and he even flirted back! answering coyly like a teenager. he's 107 years old, fri!" you whined, not noticing the new nickname you've given the alternative intelligence. "ugh, now i have a broken heart and no date in sight. how did it get to this?"
"perhaps you must discuss this matter with sergeant barnes first. your conversation ended quite abruptly with no clear conclusion."
"no, i don't want the truth rubbed on my face," you said, grabbing another piece of tissue to sneeze in. "you restricted him from entering my room, right?"
friday answered with a yes, then you thanked her for listening and decided to get some sleep after tirelessly crying for hours. you knew you had a team meeting with the avengers in a bit, but you couldn't bring yourself to even walk a few steps.
Tumblr media
your sleep ended and you were woken up with friday's reminder that it was time for dinner with the team.
with a groan, you pushed yourself off your bed. bucky would be there, but you were too hungry to care. it would be awkward, of course, but you had to face him at some point anyway.
your feet padded towards the door, opening it after trying your hair in a bun.
"ah, fuck."
you jumped at the voice and the body falling to the floor as you opened the door.
"bucky?" you asked, still in shock. "were you sleeping outside of my room?"
you watched bucky stand up, his hand massaging his aching nape as he looked for your eyes. "friday won't let me in. i waited outside instead. i guess i fell asleep during that," he explained, a frown forming on his face. "did you restrict me from entering our room?"
your eyes widened at his choice of words. our room. he considered your room to be his room as well. while that would've made you melt in an instant, you were still hurt to entertain that possibility.
"this is my room, barnes. not yours, not ours. and yes, i had you restricted because i couldn't face you yet. what do you need anyway?"
"i wanted to see you, talk to you." a flash of pain crossed his eyes. "whatever happened at the gym, it's—"
"bucky, you don't have to explain anything to me. we're just friends. it's my fault i assumed we were something. i just need some time to get over it."
"but i thought we were something as well..." he replied, his voice was almost as quiet as a whisper. "i thought we were dating."
"were we?" you asked, genuinely curious. "we never.. you never said anything. i mean, yeah, i wished it meant something, but i thought you wouldn't want to be trapped in a relationship with me, so i just waited. apparently, i was right and i can't blame you for that."
"right about what? the thing that happened in the gym this morning?" he asked. you nodded in response. "i know it sounds like i was flirting back, well i didn't know at the moment, until i asked steve who was clueless but he called nat to help me out and explained that it looked like i was flirting back. i wasn't. i was just going to suggest sam as a date for her. i would never agree to anyone."
oh. so he just wasn't interested in anyone at all.
"besides this one girl who's constantly been in my head. that's if she'd even give me a chance and say yes. i fucked it up badly before i could even ask her properly."
you knew what hoping got you, but you couldn't help but think that he was talking about you. he'd have to be clueless to say all those things in front of you only for it to be someone else.
"i love you, baby. i should've told you that, i should've made it clear sooner. i'm so sorry i let you have doubts when i could've been reassuring you about what i feel for you."
"bucky..."
"i would never feel trapped with you, doll. only you made me feel so much love and freedom. i'd be a fool to let go of that. i'm sorry it took a few hits and harsh words from natasha to make me realise that i wasn't giving you enough when you deserve everything." he held your face in his hands, bringing you closer to him. you felt breathless, tears threatening to fall but this time it was out of joy. "hydra made sure i had no voice to express myself. now, i'll use it to let you know that i love you so fucking much that it hurts when you're not around. i promise to work on it. if anything like this happens again, ask me, baby. demand things from me. i'll give you everything in a heartbeat."
"even if i ask for your arm?"
he laughed, a sound that was music to your ears. "it's yours baby. although, i do like fucking you with my metal—"
"bucky!" you scolded him, hitting him lightly on the chest.
"sorry, baby. couldn't help it. missed my girl so much."
his girl. you loved hearing that.
"it's only been a few hours. don't be silly," you reminded him, but you knew you also felt the same.
"i miss you even when i don't see you for a second." you couldn't help but laugh at his words. "something funny, doll?"
"sorry, natasha said something similar about you a few days ago," you answered. "i'm sorry for assuming so quickly, bucky. you deserved the chance to explain."
"and you did let me explain. i can't blame you for assuming and getting hurt when i never gave you the confirmation to believe otherwise. don't apologise for it, baby."
"i love you," you said, causing him to grin widely.
"yeah? you love me too?" he asked, a hint of pink tinting his cheeks. "this is official now, right? we're dating?"
you nodded happily, giggling as he landed a kiss to your mouth. "so, you wanna go to the ball with me?"
he kissed you again. "don't. i'm supposed to be asking you that. i had an entire thing prepared for you, i even dragged half of the team to help me out days ago. besides wanda and natasha, of course. couldn't let them tell you about it."
your heart swelled, he was already planning to ask you before all of this misunderstanding happened, and it could've been solved with communication. lesson learned, indeed.
"well hurry because i can't wait to say yes," you playfully threatened him, kissing the tip of his nose until the loud rumble of your stomach interrupted your sweet moment. "ah, right. i was on my way to eat dinner when i opened the door."
bucky laughed, his eyes twinkling witth adoration as he kept his eyes on you. "we can't have you starving, that's for sure. come, let's get you something." he held your hand, and dragged you the kitchen. he turned to look at you with a playful smile. "wanna cook together like the old times?"
you smiled. "like the old times."
in the middle of your cooking session, you heard whistles and claps along with the footsteps that entered the kitchen. you both turned to find the rest of the team with shit eating grins.
"finally! so is this real or do we need to smack your heads?" tony asked, his hand placed on his hip.
"it's always been real, stark," bucky answered, wrapping his arm around your waist. "except this time, i'm making sure my entire world knows it."
"i think everybody knows you have a thing for each other, barnes." clint added.
"i meant my entire world, not everybody." bucky looked at you with awe. "she's my world."
bucky's answer gained various loud reactions from the team, mostly calling him a cheesy old man and fake gags, but there you were, cheeks heating up as you looked back at him with the same amount of love, if not more.
and he did ask you to be his date to the ball the day after, surprising you with his so-called secret plan.
a year later, he surprised you with a ring as he knelt on one knee.
