Tideland
Benvenuti o bentornati sul nostro blog. Nell’ultimo periodo abbiamo parlato veramente di tante pellicole molto interessanti, partendo da Gremlins e arrivando a Tigers are not afraid. In particolar modo mi sono divertito tantissimo nel parlare di Tigers are not afraid, una pellicola bellissima, capace di unire vari generi, unire i problemi di una società insieme al sovrannaturale e all’horror. Una…

APRIL 22
I told you guys about my cat Illya loving to lay between my legs under a throw blanket. It was nice out today so I was sitting in the comfy chair sans blanket; he got up on the chair and fussed around, then he hopped down and tried to climb into my pajama pant leg so I finally got up and grabbed the lightest throw I have so Illya could do his thing. I finally remembered I have a second lap table so I put it on the bed, tossed a throw over it and Illya has been curled up there ever since. Junior’s made room for himself under there too.
I applied for unemployment today. Everyone was saying the site kept crashing on them - one person said you had to call and kept getting disconnected. I didn’t have any issues at all except trying to find dates on things that I had no inkling about anymore but I figured that out. I have no idea how long the wait time to see if I’m approved or not will take. (I’m guessing 3 weeks to a month but right now it’s hard to gauge how long anything will take.)
With today’s six movies crossed off, I only have 35 more to go on my list!
It’s directors day featuring Basil Dearden and Terry Gilliam!
All Night Long (1962) - Starring Patrick McGoohan in a Jazz-infused take on Othello featuring Dave Brubeck and Charles Mingus. I’ve seen McGoohan play lots of villains, but I have never wanted to smack him more than I did while watching this. He’s the ultimate asshole, smiling and plotting the entire time. My teeth hurt because I was clenching my jaw so tightly for so long.
The League of Gentlemen (1960) - I know this is kind of an important movie in England but it just didn’t hold my interest. The bank robbery and the escape were well executed and solid performances from the entire cast. The score was jarring as well - big booming music where it just didn’t seem appropriate. Maybe I just need to watch it again and give it another chance.
Sapphire (1959) - Wow. This is an amazing movie. A young woman is murdered in London and the investigation into her death takes a sharp turn when it’s discovered that the woman, Sapphire, was bi-racial passing for white. While this is very much a crime movie, racism is its central theme. A powerful, moving, and sadly still relevant movie - highly recommended.
There’s going to be a Basil Dearden marathon on TCM on May 7th. (All times Pacific) Be sure to set your DVR!
03:00am  Sapphire (1959)
04:45am The League of Gentlemen (1960)
06:45am The Secret Partner (1961)
08:30am Victim (1961)
10:30am All Night Long (1963)
12:15pm Woman of Straw (1964)
02:30pm Masquerade (1965)
The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus (2009) - Not Terry Gilliam’s best film which is shame because I was super hopeful about it since he’d written it alongside Charles McKeown, with whom he’d also written Brazil and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. The story, however, is a disjointed Faustian tale of a man who makes a deal with the Devil and is granted immortality but forgets to ask for eternal youth. ‘Visually stunning’ is synonymous with Gilliam’s work and this movie is no exception but it’s let down by a lackluster script. I’m going to have to give this movie another watch someday to be sure how I feel.
Tideland (2005) - Starring Brendan Fletcher, Jeff Bridges, Jennifer Tilly, Janet McTeer and Jodelle Ferland. (She’s best known, on this blog anyway, as Harmony from the 2008 Stargate Atlantis episode of the same name.) I didn’t hate this movie, but I didn’t like it very much either. Bizarre, unsettling, scary, heart-wrenching and absolutely hard to watch. It’s definitely an interesting film but honestly even with the absolutely mind-blowing performance by Jodelle Ferland I’m never watching this movie again.
Two-Way Stretch (1960) - I had to watch something else before I went to bed so I’ve pulled out the last of the Peter Sellers movies I haven’t watched yet. This one co-stars Bernard Cribbins and Wilfrid Hyde-White. The premise is 3 men who only have a little bit of their sentence left to serve in prison plans the perfect bank robbery - they’re going to break out, commit the crime and break back into prison and voile the perfect alibi. What could possibly go wrong? This movie is quite simply a delight from beginning to end.

Theatrical trailer
Collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film by Neil Mitchell (first pressing only)
To escape her unhappy life in a remote part of Texas, nine-year-old Jeliza-Rose dreams up an elaborate fantasy world. But the reality of having junkie parents – played by Jeff Bridges and Jennifer Tilly – and the influence of her eccentric neighbors begins to encroach, turning her daydreams ever darker.
A rich slice of Southern Gothic blurring whimsical fantasy with unsettling reality, Tideland is among Gilliam’s most personal works – indeed, with its shifts between the amusing and the macabre, expressive camerawork and striking special effects, the film could be the very definition of Gilliamesque!

November 9 - Ashepoo River to Dolphin Point (Hilton Head). Day started out well. Molly D made the 11:30 opening of the Lady Island Swing Bridge.
Tumblr media
Lady Island Swing Bridge.
Tumblr media
The Waterway Guide has a section on bridges. It took me a few readings of the Lady’s Island bridge entry to figure out that the bridge opens on the hour and half hour.
Three miles away is the McTeer twin bridges, which are fixed. Published clearance at mean high high water is 65’, which poses no problem for Molly D. However, this area is still experiencing super high tides. A look at the tide board on the fenders recorded clearance at 61.5’, a no go for us. The high tide was around 12:30, so Molly D would have to wait. We found an anchorage spot in sight of the bridge and dropped anchor. We thought that we would have lunch and maybe by 1:30 the tide would have receded enough for us to have enough clearance to pass under the bridge.
Tumblr media
Molly D’s anchored spot just north of the McTeer Bridge.
David and I kept checking the tide board for the clearance. We discovered that after 62’ the tide board was missing! We had read on a forum that when 5 boards on the fenders were showing, the clearance should be 65’5”. And we are to trust this ?? After 4 hours of waiting and just guessing at the clearance, David decided to try passing under the bridge. As I was hauling the anchor, a catamaran was heading under the bridge. After it was on the other side, David hailed the boat and inquired about the depth. The captain read 65’ on the tide board on the northbound side. Glad we had a definitive height!! We continued on our way and anchored for the night at Dolphin Point (Hilton Head).
Tumblr media
Anchorage for the night.
Tomorrow we will leave the anchorage as soon as there is enough light to navigate by. We will be heading offshore and will travel 114 miles to Cumberland Island, arriving well into the night. Let’s see—114 miles at 7 knots should take us just under 17 hours. If we had gone offshore from Charleston, the trip to Cumberland Island would have taken 26-27 hours. Here are some more photos from today’s travel.
Tumblr media
Beautiful scenery.

The dreaded McTeer Memorial Twin Bridges.

A beautiful ending to a very frustrating day.
