"I'm sorry, that's not right." (Anti-McLennon fans)

I have a friend who claims the title “Beatles scholar.” He is a white, cis, straight man. 

Last week, I spoke about John and Paul’s relationship, mentioning how they were in love and how it makes me sad. As much as I wish they were *together together* I don’t think they were, but I think they were together as much as they could be. And yeah, I obviously think they hooked up. 

And yes, they were obviously in love.  (I'm just adding these pics to make it pretty, let me have this).

This friend says, “You think they were gay? … No, no no, that’s not right, I’m sorry.” 

Gay is not the proper word. Sexuality is a spectrum. Why does the Beatles fandom immediately go to "Oh, you think Lennon was gay?"

Sexuality, romantic attraction, intimacy and love are all different things that can be present with or without each other. 

“There’s no evidence of Paul being attracted to other men.” There doesn’t have to be. Paul could only be attracted or in love with John. See point number 1. It would be enough.

Who has written all of these Beatles books we read and articles we study? White, cis, straight men. I don’t trust your sources. The entire history needs to be reexamined by people who are queer, all genders, all races and all walks of life for something as historically important as the Beatles. 

“No, no, no. I’m sorry, that’s not right.” Coming from the same “friend” who is very passionate about getting my pronouns right and being an ally rings very hollow when unwilling to look at the complex relationship of Lennon-McCartney with any sort of romantic aspect. 

So, no, friend, I’m sorry, that’s not right.

And yeah, I don’t really feel comfortable being Beatles friends with him anymore which stinks because I enjoyed his perspective. His perspective also tainted a resource I looked to beforehand but now I no longer trust it. Don’t trust shit.
