Hi, I have a few asks! Hope they're not too much to answer!

What types of weapons do the Erebian League use? I'm thinking scimitars, rapiers..? Maybe poison-coated?

Can a magic-user give up their magic willingly? If so, then how would they be treated in society afterwards?

Out of the Origins you can choose from, who has the worst/best relationship with their parents? (excluding the Child of the Streets since they're an orphan/don't know their parents) I think the Child of the Sea hates their parents the most- they were sold off like a piece of merchandise for Gods sake! (Wayfarer curse reference!)

What age do Wayfarer's usually join the order? How long do they train for before graduating?

Which is the hardest magic sphere to master?

Are bloodbinders exclusive to those of Melusine ancestry- since only Rhodarth and Iaera have been mentioned to have this power and they're both of Melusine ancestry.

Which Origin is likely to receive the most discrimination based on where they are from?

Are Atheists rare- most of the characters mentioned seem to be religious- and if they are, then how are they treated?

Is there any way to find a loophole in a blood oath?

Most of these are answered in the text, either directly or in the subtext.

1. Daggers and throwing knives. As demonstrated by Malsara.

2. No. You can't "give up" magic.

3. This is best left to player imagination and headcanon! How your MC feels about their family and their parents is up to you.

4. There's no standard as it depended on when they joined. But they were usually recruited as children and would graduate in their late teens/early 20s. The MC and Aeran are around 12-14 in the Prologue.

5. They're all difficult to master. The vast majority of the population don't have a grip on the full extent of their abilities because they don't have the training. Not every person who can run can run a marathon.

Of the six spheres, Dispersion is the least understood. Most practical research is focused on teleportation. There are a subset of people who can use it to see briefly into the future (augurs - you can meet one in Episode 2), but the applications aren't thoroughly researched. Similarly, there are aspects of Illumination magic that go unresearched and unexplored. The sphere deals in illusion and perception magic and the predominant focus on the crafting of illusions and manipulating the vision of others. However, manipulating emotions falls into the sphere's domain. Most lightseekers stay away from this aspect of their magic because it is frowned upon culturally outside of specific professionals.

Beyond that, combinations of different spheres for Dual and Triple attunement are even more difficult to master as there are very few people with this level of inherent magic and spheres interact in unexpected ways when you have access to more than one.

6. No, they aren't. The Corsida Brightblades (the largest contingent of bloodbinders in the world) are based in Corsida, a former Lotharic city-state now under Imperial rule. It is located on an island in the Lotharic Sea and very close to Maira, a melusine city below the waves. Many of their members are melusine as a result.

As a side note, Iaera is being re-worked. I'm not sure if they will be a character in Wayfarer.

7. The Wayfarer is going to receive far more shit for being a Wayfarer than where they are from. Child of the Wilds does get some minor flavour text in regards to their accent (since Artanis is considered a backwoods Imperial province), but I wouldn't go so far as to call it discriminatory.

8. I've answered something similar to this before - what gives you the impression that most of the characters are religious? As I said in the previous ask many characters may be culturally religious and participate in religious events, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they believe in gods. Belief and faith lands in many different places across the board.

9. Possibly, possibly not. But a named character who has been introduced is trying to find one.

Huedhaut~ Duet

Synopsis: Finding Huedhaut playing a flute on the balcony one morning leads to a special request from you to play a duet with him. How were you supposed to know it would turn into a concert?

A/n: I was reading Sounds of Passion from Lady Maira and it’s so cute. It’s about Scorpio finding MC playing the violin and lkasdlfhlskfs it reminded of 8 years ago when I was in band and I played the flute. And then I remembered that Huedhaut ALSO plays the flute, and I absolutely had to write a little thing about it. This image of Hue has my heart. 🥹 I’m feeling nostalgic. Flutes are so majestic. I- I didn’t start crying listening to the flute cover of “My Heart Will Go On” while looking at Hue and thinking about that tragic scene of him giving his stars for Clotho! 😭 You’re crying, not me!

My eyes trailed the halls of the mansion, the sun basking my surroundings in an early-morning glow. I wasn’t sure where the elegant sound of a flute was coming from, but I was sure I’d find out soon. I’d been to the mansion many times for various reasons. It all started with getting rid of the gods’ marks of sin up until our battle against the Dark King. But at least that was all over with and my visits were purely for enjoyment.

I got the hint that I was allowed to visit the mansion whenever I pleased after my last visit which entailed a party—a little something they promised to throw for me since they put me through so much in our short time together.

So this time, I was there to see one god in particular that I’d grown close to… Only, I’d gotten side tracked the minute I opened the mansion door that connected itself to my own. The beautiful tune that carried itself quietly through the mansion was something that enraptured my full attention and drew me to it. I knew the minute the sound caught my ears that I had to investigate.

It could have been another party, the gods were fond of throwing them and they weren’t shy of having music to set a divine ambiance. Whether or not they knew it, they had a fairly good idea on what my musical preferences were, that it was never loud and overbearing music.

My heart seemed to race as the flute grew louder with each step. Upstairs, I found the gentle melody leading me to the balcony doors. Standing in the doorway, my hand instinctively clutched my shirt just above my heart. If I wasn’t in love with Huedhaut before, my heart was certainly stuttering at his divine beauty. I’d never seen the gods personally pick up an instrument, used to them snapping their fingers and having instruments play on their own. Seeing Huedhaut playing a flute in the light of the rising sun sent many emotions coiling through me.

Though, he paused for a moment, turning to face me. Evidently, he felt my eyes on him and offered me a smile. “I thought I heard someone behind me. It’s not polite to sneak up on people.”

“Oh, uh, sorry,” I frantically apologized. But I then got the excited nerve to pull out my phone, searching desperately for the sheet music for a specific song. He played so beautifully… At this point, aside from Huedhaut himself, there was nothing more that I wanted besides hearing him play this song. “I just arrived and heard the most beautiful sound in the world… I had to find it. I- I loved it, Hue. If it’s not too much…” I held my phone out to him. “Can you play this… please? It’s one of my favorites on the flute.”

Glancing away from him bashfully, he leaned forward to go over the music I placed before him. Observing how a phone worked, he mimicked my motion to scroll through the lines of notes, taking in what I was requesting from him. “‘My Heart Will Go On’?” He read the title out loud, inclining his head with a small smile. “I could try it for you.”

Returning to where he was standing before, I pursued him with my phone. “W- Wait, don’t you need this? Or… have you played this before?”

His lips quirked up displaying his usual smirk. “I think I read everything. Though… You could hold it out for me, if you’re willing to help.”

My heart stuttered yet again before I nodded my head. Standing before him, I acted like nothing more than a music stand as I held my phone up for him to read. My sole job was to scroll as he played. “Th- Thank you.”

Being that I was offering to help him, it was probably him who should have been thanking me, but I was the one who asked him to grant this request of mine. Still, I wasn’t sure if my heart had time to start up again when he immediately began to play for me.

I tried my best to focus on scrolling instead of the way his fingers elegantly switched between notes. Though… halfway through, I forgot what I was doing, my eyes locked onto him. His eyes were closed in concentration and my phone fell back to my side, useless to him. I wasn’t even sure I ever played that song that well while looking at the sheet music. He played through the entire thing as if it were child’s play—which for a god, it must have been.

Though, when his eyes landed on me, his smile fell. Placing the flute on the nearby table, his cool hands delicately reached out to wipe at the corners of my eyes. “I didn’t know you’d be crying…”

“Oh…” I sniffled. I didn’t realize tears were leaving my eyes at all. My cheeks heating up from embarrassment, I pulled away, wiping the tears from my eyes. “S- Sorry…” It wasn’t often music moved me enough to make me cry, but usually I at least noticed when I was crying!

“You don’t have to apologize,” he insisted, instead taking my hand. “You must have been feeling an awful lot to cry without noticing. Is that why you came to find me? What’s wrong?”

I shook my head, denying his thoughts. “It’s nothing like that. I just thought you played really beautifully. It’s been a while since I’ve heard someone play the flute. And you…” I wiped the annoying tears from my eyes. “Heh, I’m sorry. I was just touched by your musicianship. You barely even looked at it but you sounded like you’d been playing it your whole life.”

A teasing smile broke out across his face. “If I’d have known you’d be this touched, I’d have played for you before.”

“Well,” I glanced away before smiling back at him. If he really felt bad for keeping this talent from me, then there was a way he could make it up to me. “If you want to, I have a way you could apologize.”

He hummed, his eyes trailing over my face for any hint of me teasing him. “And what would my little goldfish want as an apology?”

This was it… just as he never told me he could play the flute, I neglected to share a similar secret with him. Only… I was feeling self-conscious now that I knew just how well he played. Still, it would be an honor to play alongside someone so talented. “I might not be as good, but…” Butterflies fluttered in my chest as I finally grew the courage to look him in the eye. “Please, play a duet with me!”

His eyes widened slightly. “You play the flute?” A huff of laughter escaped his lips. “I suppose I shouldn’t be one to complain; that would be contradictory.”

“Before you answer,” I quickly interrupted him, “I… was wondering if you could give me some pointers? Just some advice on how to play better… The way you played was smooth and fluid and it sounded wonderful. I’d like to play like that.”

Playing the flute was nothing more than a hobby that he picked up, but thinking back on it, he was glad he did. Now he had the opportunity to share it with me. “Of course. Should I-”

“Wait here,” I interrupted him, rushing to go back into the mansion. “I’ll be back with my flute so you can show me!” I was ecstatic the minute he agreed to my request. Of course, that only left me feeling self-conscious once again. I was sure I couldn’t play anything as nice as Huedhaut. Maybe I could get in five minutes to go over a few scales before returning and trying to get to his level. I was sure I would be a natural disaster in front of him. The least I could do was make sure I wasn’t forgetting any notes. I wanted him to give me professional advice, not advice like how to play a note or how to hold my instrument the correct way. Though… he was Huedhaut. I was sure he understood.

I knew to expect a horrendous first impression, but I didn’t expect it to go so horribly that I wanted to cry in front of him. I’d never get that duet at this rate.

My cheeks were burning with embarrassment as he finally commented, “It wasn’t bad. There were a few technical issues that can be fixed with practice… However,” I froze at his pause. “You’ve been tense this entire time and I have a feeling it’s affecting your performance. Whatever it was you’re expecting, I’m not backing out of a duet with you. We’ll practice. Let’s try that again so I can get an accurate impression.”

I faltered watching him bring his flute to his lips. “You… You’re playing with me?”

He hummed, lowering his instrument. “I’m deciding on what might make you comfortable enough to play naturally for me. Besides, wouldn’t it be more fun to play together than have me bearing over you?”

Well, he wasn’t wrong. Having him hovering over me while I played was pretty daunting. Taking in a deep breath, I nodded. “Yeah… Okay. But you can count us off.”

It wasn’t odd that he was right about my playing quality being because of his presence. But, playing alongside him differed greatly from being judged harshly by him. There were, as expected, a few things he pointed out to me by the end of each tune we played, but our time together was better than I expected. Though, this was just practice, and I was looking forward to our ultimate song together—the song I first requested for him to play. Of course, playing a duet was more than about playing the same thing at the same time—I wanted our duet to be something special. I wanted it to be unique to us, the sounds of our flutes dancing around one another like they belonged together.

“Woah! That was awesome!” Teorus shouted from the door, thoroughly startling us—well, startling me. Huedhaut was probably expecting the interruption. Unfortunately, it wasn’t just Teorus. Ichthys, Krioff, and Tauxolouve were also peering through the door with interested faces.

But Ichthys pouted as he complained, “Is this what you’ve been teaching (Name) this whole time? Hmph, (Name), you should hang out with me more so I can teach you how to make amazing pranks!”

Before I could argue with Ichthys’ theory, Huedhaut was already bragging beside me, “As a matter of fact, (Name) came to me with this request. I couldn’t have trained such a natural talent. Isn’t that right, (Name)? You were already acquainted with your instrument before you found me.” Flustered by his compliments in front of the other gods, I simply nodded my head in response. “See? Why don’t you play something for them?”

“W- What? I, uh,” I clammed up, my eyes flickering through the various excited expressions of the gods.

As if sensing my desire to shrink away and hide, Tauxolouve supported, “You were practicing really well. Can’t you play a song for us?”

I was sure they were only familiar with Huedhaut’s way of playing the flute. There was no telling if they were going to like my style. Awkwardly, I bowed my head behind my flute as if it would hide me from their pressing gazing. I mentioned quietly to Huedhaut, “They’ve been watching us practice… I don’t think I’m ready to perform an actual song for anyone.”

“I think you sound just fine,” Huedhaut tried to encourage, only yielding no results. “Then how about we practice some more and then we can see about that song you wanted to play?”

“I have an idea,” Ichthys beamed at the two of us, clapping his hands together. “You two should have a concert for us! (Name) can do a solo and we can all listen to human music!”

“A- All?” I stuttered. Just who the heck was he getting involved? I wasn’t mentally prepared to perform in front of a bunch of gods—these four were bad enough.

“You were in a concert band when you were in school, weren’t you?” Huedhaut asked, knowing the answer to that already after having asked me about my history with a flute. “Why don’t you try your hand at impressing the other gods?” Seeing how nervous I was at the prospect of performing for gods like that, he added quietly, “I’ll be with you the whole time. We’ll play your song together for them.”

Biting my lip shyly, I glanced at him. “I just wanted to do a duet with you. If we practice together and I like it… then we can perform for the other gods.” There was the odd chance I would hate it and choose to cancel, but… if I enjoyed performing with Huedhaut that much then maybe this whole thing would be worth it. Besides, the gods wouldn’t look down on me anymore if they knew I was actually talented at something.

“Great,” Ichthys exclaimed, having been listening in on us. “We’ll tell everyone to meet in the living room tonight! I’ll see you two there! Don’t be late!”

“W- Wait!” My eyes widened in fright, but the four gods were already eagerly abandoning us on the balcony to spread the news of our impromptu duet in front of everyone. Frantically, I turned to Huedhaut. “We can’t do that tonight! I- I won’t be ready. I need time to mentally prepare. We didn’t even decide how we’re going to play! We need time to practice and-”

“(Name),” he interrupted me, his hands caressing my cheeks so my eyes were focused on him. “We have all day to practice. Or… do you think I’m inadequate to prepare us in time?”

“That’s not…” I huffed, crossing my arms. “It’s just that my other performances gave me weeks or months of preparation time.”

“Today, you have hours,” he pointed out with a smile that I found irritating at the moment. Lifting my flute up to my mouth, he waited for me to grab it with my own hands. “There’s no time to waste, is there?”

A performance was a little more than I asked for, but with Huedhaut’s direction, I’d be playing my favorite song in tandem with him. Nothing ever made my heart feel so light. “Hue…” I rested my flute on my lap, leaning closer to him before my lips softly pressed against his. It was only for a brief second that I wished could have lasted longer before I was pulling away with burning cheeks. With my eyes firmly glued to the sheet music in front of me, I muttered, “Thank you…”

He stayed surprised for a long moment, not moving as he listened to me begin our duetted piece. I wasn’t completely aware that my actions flustered him as much as they did myself, but his reaction did not disappoint me. I heard a faint “you’re welcome” before I heard him jump into the music with me. If only I’d known Huedhaut was such a breathtaking musician… I’d have asked to do this sooner.

The chance to further his musical talents came when offered a radio show to host titled Jr's Time out Show on NaijaFm 101.1 which ran consecutively for about 8 weeks before teaming with Noel Inyang a multi talented producer who is the brains behind Game On and Baraje.

Liam stood in front of the mirror as he adjusted his bow tie. “I don't want to love anyone else.”

Leo said, “Who says you are?”

Liam took a deep breath and said, “No one.”

Leo sighed and said, “So what's the problem? You are thinking way too much.”

“I guess. How hard can it be? I go to the bar and order a drink.” Liam furrowed his brows and combed his hands through his hair.

“Lighten the fuck up. Drop the resting bitch face. It looks like you're trying to take a shit and can't.”

Liam chuckled and said, “Fine.”

“Relax you have been so fucken moody. Go get laid don't think twice about it.”

Liam walked around the room and noticed a woman standing by the bar she was absolutely glowing. She wore a tight long black gown with a sweetheart neckline that showed just enough of her cleavage that left him wanting to see more. As he looked at the details of the gown he noticed the long slit down the middle that exposed her thigh and showed off her strappy heels with crystal embellishment ‘my weakness’ there was something about how she looked in heels that made her appear confident and dominant.

As he eyed her curiously and he could approach her and break the ice. Sure he was rusty but he figured he would try his luck with the pretty brunette after all she reminded him of someone. As Liam walked towards the bar people paid their respects but it slowed him down as he desperately tried to make his way to the woman before she walked away. Other men were looking at her and he didn't want to compete for her attention. Liam stood next to her and said, “I'm sorry I saw you from across the floor and just had to try to talk to you.”

She smiled and said, “Your Majesty” as she gave him a deep curtsey.

“I'm not really good at this and I don't pretend to be but I was hoping it wouldn't be too forward if I asked to buy you a drink.”

The woman chuckled and said, “Well it's your party. I think you brought everyone a drink.”

Liam smiled and said, “Well then shall I order you a drink then?”

The woman smiled and said, “Thank you, Your Majesty.”

“Please call me Liam. May I please know your name.”

“María.”

Liam said, “ María te ves como una Diosa en ese vestido.” (You look like a Goddess in that dress)

María said, “Thank you. Do you speak Spanish?”

A playful smile tugged on his lips and he said, “¡Sí! Un poco.”

María said, “That's a turn-on. How did you learn?”

“Well, an ex-girlfriend taught me. But let's not talk about that.”

María said, “Wasn't going to...I kind of want your attention this evening.”

“María you have my attention. My undivided attention. Liam looked at her with a charming smile. “ Can I order our signature cocktail? However, I find tonight Cordonian lemonade divine and leaves you wanting more.”

Maira gave him a mischievous grin and said, “Leave me wanting more.”

Liam flagged the bartender and said, “Two pink lemonades.”

30 minutes later…

Liam shamelessly eyed his María, watching her chew on her bottom lip in thought. Her eyes slowly met his.

María put her glass down and smiled “This is like our fifth drink now.”

“Why are you counting?”

“The fifth drink is usually when I think if I want this to go further.”

Liam said, “I’d like to see where this goes, don't you?”

María smiled and said, “Where do you think it is going to go?”

Liam leaned in and said, “I’m going to walk out that door.” Liam looked down at María’s shoes and bit his lip “You are going to follow me.”

“Really and why would I do that?”

“I’m going to put myself deep inside you.”

“But you just meet me?”

“I want you and that's all there is to it.”

Liam gently took the drink out of María’s hands and said, “There is a garden and I want you to meet me at the end of it. You will know you are there when you see a well.”

Liam and María were up against a wall and as he began to kiss down her neck as his hand ran down her body touching every curve.

“Do you want more?” Liam whispered in a husky tone. María gently bit Liam's bottom lip and put her hand on Liam’s and guiding it to the slit of her dress. She began to moan when he reached into her panties and smirked down at her and said, “María, you are dripping for me. You should have told me earlier, I would have helped you.” Liam muttered, rubbing small circles into her core with the pad of his thumb.

“I’m attracted to you, what can I say? You give me a tingle,” María muttered, running her hands up his chest. Liam ran his hands over her body as well. She reached down and touched him groping at his erection through his clothes and he let his eyes fall shut. She unbuckled his pants and lowered his underwear began moving her hands back and forth on his shaft. Liam took her wrist to keep her hand there, making her continue her motions. Liam’s free hand came up to squeeze her breast through the tight fabric of her dress. Liam kissed her collarbone and gently sucking at the skin. It made María moan and tilt her head back, letting her eyes fall shut as Liam continued making her whine and grind her hips against his.

“Excited” Liam mused, a little smirk on his face. He leaned down to kiss her lips gently. With his free hand, he pulled on the shoulder strap of her dress down and she arched her back allowing her breast to fall and they repeated the action to the other side all the while Liam was rubbing at her core.

“You are a multi-tasker.” María whispered, “Keep touching me.”

“Like this.” Liam gently began sucking on her breast as he continued rubbing.

“Mmm just like that.” María breathed out.

“Very. We might get caught.” María whispered in a seductive tone.

He pulled his mouth away. “Does that bother you?” Liam whispered

“The idea of it turns me on.” María breathed out

He pulled down her panties all the way down, he helped her step out of them and licking his lips when he saw how wet she was. “Fuck,” he muttered. He spread her legs a little and began to taste her sucking aggressively.

“You are fucking me with your mouth.” He began pumping his fingering in and out of her “Your the best thing I have ever tasted.” He slowly stood up as he raised her dress. He lifted her up with ease and she wrapped her legs around his waist. He pushed her against the wall aligning himself with her. And he slid into her slowly, moans erupting from both of them. María looked into his eyes, pressing a kiss to his lips.

“Move,” she muttered. Liam began his thrusts. He set a slow rhythm at first, angling his hips to try and find the spot inside of her that would make her fall apart. She felt the heel of her shoe digging into the small of his back and he grunted.

“Liam, am I hurting you?”

“Ah, Liam!” María moaned, tightening around her. It only spurred him on more, hips thrusts becoming a bit faster. He angled his hips there to hit her spot over and over again, making her cry out in pleasure. María reached up to run her fingers through his hair, tugging gently. Liam grunted at that, his hips bucking wildly but very calculated to get María to experience the most pleasure.

“I feel you so deep inside.” María cried out. “Fuck so good, so tight.” Liam trusted deep and hard. It did not take long for them to both become close. Loud moans were shared between the two of them, and Liam reached down to toy with her clit. This made María fall off of the edge almost immediately, crying out. “How about pain in my ass.” Drake handed Jessica a velvet case and she took it. And said, “I'm many things and that is probably right up there with future mother to gummy bear and Liam's wife.”

“Are we getting casual Friday?”

“Yes we are so you can continue to impress us with your fancy jean shirt.”

Drake smiled “Are you going to wear your tiara to work?”

“Tiara's are meant to be worn Drake plus it gets us free stuff you were not complaining when we got free tacos.”

Liam came from behind and wrapped his arms around her and said, “Mmm.” he kissed her shoulder and neck and back said, “Allow me.” Jessica handed Liam the velvet case and he unzipped it and took out its contents.

Jessica gave Liam a deep curtsy and he placed a tiara on her head. He smiled at her and said, “Her Majesty Jessica María Rys, CHAMPION of the Realm, mother of my child and my goddess of a wife please stand and be recognized.”

Jessica slowly stood up and smirked at Drake and mouthed the words “Champ” he mouthed “Pain in my FUCKEN ASS.” Drake walked into the hall as Jessica and Liam lingered outside. He held her in his arms and whispered “How much longer till you have till you need to leave?”

“I have to feed the baby in 20 minutes. I can come back.”

“What if we go in there did our final dance and go home. I would love to be with my girls.”

Liam took her hand and kissed her right to her wedding band.

“Mmm that sounds amazing. I believe there was an offer for a little more wondering if-”

“I always want more.”

He loves the feeling he gets when your entire mood is lifted when he knows what’s wrong and his brothers don’t. He feels like he knows you the best

Flashes you a big smile and hands you a tray of food as soon as he senses your hunger

Sensing when you’re feeling tired is the best part of his day as it means he can fling you over his shoulder, throw you onto bed and voila, problem solved

Hustle Mates ~ Cosmos Troupe 2018

I know I'm here so often it's hardly special anymore… but this trip had the distinction of being my first VACATION in Japan in 5 years. I'd forgotten what mornings look like in this country (and as I'm now back at work for the remaining few days, I already miss them).

It also had the distinction of being Kazuki Sora's first lead. Of my standout favorites in my life thus far as a Takarazuka fan, Sora is the only one who, by some witch magic, grabbed me when she was a tiny child—before I ever set foot in a theater here, before she even got a shinko lead. After growing quite used to following her around the edges of the stage with my opera glasses and mentally cursing camera operators for not panning two inches to the left to get more than a sliver of her arm in some great dance scene, this year brought first an absolute dream role in Anita, followed by the center spotlight that I honestly wasn't convinced she'd ever get. It's been vindicating seeing her immense talents displayed so prominently, and deeply moving in ways utterly different from any of the other cyclones of emotion Takarazuka fandom has thrown upon me. A very non-Soragumi friend had a chance to see the show, and I felt nervous and wary like I was taking an acquaintance to my own child's recital (someone please tell me when I got old enough to experience THAT feeling). And much like a mom, I plan to throw out any attempt at objectivity and rave about my girl until you don't want to listen anymore.

Hustle Mates was primarily a collection of songs and dances from Soragumi history, with a few non-Takarazuka songs, MC sections, and mini skits thrown in. It's a tiny cast of 16, so if you like anyone in it you have a good chance of seeing her featured. Long-time Soragumi fans will likely find it very fun and nostalgic regardless. Sora leading a show about the history of Soragumi which contains a great number of songs with the word sora in them made it kind of sound like she was singing about herself for two hours, which greatly amused me (and apparently tickled Ishida-sensei too).

Act 1 opens with two original songs—the very upbeat Hustle Mates theme, and then more of a ballad (also with ample use of the word SORA)—followed by a selection of songs from some of the most well-known Soragumi musicals: Copacabana, Phantom, Top Hat, Singin' in the Rain, and an Elisabeth medley, which despite the general overuse of Elisabeth songs was still my favorite. Watashi Dake Ni was a group musumeyaku number, Mikaze Maira got to unleash her very impressive pipes on that last note. Saigo no Dance also started as a group otokoyaku number. Moeko entered partway through for a solo line, and I know she has the shinko Tod experience under her, but since I've never seen that, it was maybe the most surprising and powerful few seconds of Moeko I've ever witnessed. Then Sora came in to finish the song, and in some alternate universe where she's in a different class and tall enough to be a top star I'd sell both of my kidneys to see her Elisabeth every single day of the run. Sora solo Kitsch came next and was likewise flawless, so I guess I'll be satisfied with keeping my kidneys if they finally air that dang shinko in the next couple of months while Tsukigumi is playing.

Then we have a skit… I'm a bit fuzzy on exactly what went on in it, but I suspect I might be looking for sense where there was none. Setohana Mari enters dressed like a dominatrix, loudly cracking whip and all, with two other musumeyaku guards of Partial Time Prison. They do a roll call of past Soragumi characters who come out one by one and make meta jokes about themselves (discussing their offenses?) while the three guards smack them around. Sora is brought out last, as Lucheni, and gives a long speech, the punchline of which is he's on the path to reform thanks to his new life selling green juice mix in what is probably a pyramid scheme. Each performance she ad-libbed Louis and Marie Antoinette off the stage.

Moeko and Mineri who were playing Jose and Carmen in prison stick around to sing Temptation (GREAT song, I wanted a little more from these two) while the underclassmen get ready to sing Amapola a cappella conducted by Homare Seri. This was QUITE impressive, and I love it when they use Bow to give underclassmen little challenges like this. Act 1 ends with a medley of the Soragumi revue songs that got the most votes in the internet poll they ran a few months ago. They aren't listed individually in the program and I'm probably missing something, but off the top of my head I remember Millennium Challenger, Dancing For You, Funky Sunshine, Nice Guy, Phoenix Takarazuka, and Hot Eyes. Sora singing Funky Sunshine (SO—RA— POWER) was HIGHLY satisfying. They finish on Asu e no Energy, which still made me cry even though I JUST saw Citrus Breeze… but put my kid in the center of a song that always makes me cry anyway and I guess that's what you get.

Act 2 was less nostalgic and more interesting to me, probably because Sora's dance scenes multiplied significantly. They opened with a nihonmono medley, beginning with a Soran dance which I LOVED (the one from Viva Festa always gets me hyped too). Sora entered Takarazuka with a background in hip hop dance which I think always gives her movements a particular dynamic energy and a sharpness that sets her apart even from the other great Takarazuka dancers, but it stood out to me even more than usual in the Soran scene, probably in contrast to the traditional Japanese garb. I REALLY LOVED IT (even if I can imagine nichibu purists cringing). During my first two viewings of the show I was mostly overwhelmed and ecstatic that Sora had gotten a lead at all, but the last one, particularly in the Soran scene for whatever reason, it hit me HARD how much she's grown and how commanding and enthralling she is on stage.

After we spend a bit more time reliving Soragumi's very brief nihonmono history through song, there's a "rain corner" featuring a folk song that I rather like and a skit that made me feel COMPLEX THINGS. Mappu (Matsukaze Akira) plays some kind of rain god/wizard/???, in a whimsically decorated raincoat with two cute little ghosts hanging off her umbrella. Sora enters playing a guy out for a walk in the park in the rain where he meets a girl (Mineri) who lets him share her umbrella, and when the rain stops she asks him what he's doing in the park in the rain without one. BEAR WITH ME HERE: he explains he felt like coming to visit the spot where his dog Liza died, on a rainy day just like this one, after running away from their car (side note, I hope they named the dog Liza because Mineri's name is a play on Minelli?? Is it even?? There's a good ochakai question 6 days too late). He reminisces about all the tricks Liza could do, and Mineri imitates them. He shows her a picture of Liza, and surprisingly they're wearing the same dress?! It becomes evident that Mineri is actually the human form spirit of Sora's late pet, granted a few precious moments on earth by Rain Wizard Mappu to talk to her former owner, thank him, and say goodbye… she disappears with Mappu before Sora fully figures it out. HERE'S THE THING: As WTF?? as this entire concept is, Sora's acting was so damn heartbreaking I TEARED UP on the THIRD VIEWING even though I TOTALLY KNEW WHAT TO EXPECT?? I'm GENUINELY ANGRY that she took THIS SKIT and managed to MAKE ME CRY, and now I'm also praying to all the gods that this isn't her last lead, because I NEED to see her in a proper play with a proper partner. Where do I sacrifice the goats?

Next the whole team sings a song from Never Say Goodbye, leading up to Sora coming out for a solo barefoot dance, custom engineered to wound me as gravely as possible. Setohana Mari follows this up with an attempt at If I Were a Bell from Guys & Dolls, with brilliant all-in drunk acting but barely recognizable English (A for effort given the speed of the song though).

AND THEN

Okay. There's a rare special thing that I've now had the… fortune? I guess? of experiencing twice, that I hope you all get to experience someday, not because it's good or fun but just because it's An Experience. Sometimes there are secret little treats hidden in Takarazuka shows just for the foreigners. They're secret because I am pretty sure the directors have no idea what treats they are. And sometimes, through a combination of luck and the kindest friends, you make it to your first viewing with no spoilers, and a song starts playing that you recognize within half a note, and you begin having an experience so separate from every other person in the theater you feel as though you might as well be floating above the audience with all their disapproving gazes drilling into you, wondering what the heck you're doing up there when clearly the place for you is down here. The first time was when I waltzed unassuming into HOT EYES!! in an era when my feelings re: Soragumi were "I guess I have to watch them if I want to see Sora," and in my heart-pounding state of shock brought about by the first however many scenes Eye of the Tiger began to play, and out came involuntarily a VERY noticeable raspberry spit of quickly stifled laughter (before Makaze's everything shut me right the heck up).

The second was when amidst the polite applause following Secchan's Ding Dong Ding, the curtain rose on the remainder of the cast beginning a fiercely literal staging of the entirety of Bohemian Rhapsody in English. There are so many things to unpack:

Mikaze Maira, playing a literal mother, opens the number by emotionally reading a literal letter from her literal son who has literally gone off to war

The others, with Sora in the center, are playing soldiers armed with sizable rifles, portraying the horrors of war via aggressive interpretive dance

Sora's English, while certainly not flawless, was SO PASSABLE, especially when compared to a) history in general and b) specifically Can't Take My Eyes Off of You from 2 years ago, I was FULLY SHOOK

Her dancing and acting in this number were SO FRIGGIN GOOD I could DIE

The performance overall was SO PASSIONATELY ACTED and thus SO DISTRESSING that people in the audience were CRYING from BEING MOVED to the point where later in the run they BEGAN SNIFFLING BEFORE THE NUMBER EVEN STARTED

It forced me for the first time in my life to sit down and hella contemplate the lyrics to Bohemian Rhapsody, the conclusion of which was a) yeah that sure was a 500% valid interpretation of the lyrics and b) there is absolutely no way I could ever begin to explain to a Japanese person why in my culture it's a FUNNY SONG

I was EXTRA TICKLED that Kotti, who can't speak above a whisper off stage, was the one who got to run up onto a box and scream SO YOU THINK YOU CAN STONE ME AND SPIT IN MY EYE

Every viewing my body shook so hard from the effort it took to keep myself from making any sort of noise I wouldn't be surprised if everyone in my row could feel the tremors and I am honestly still tired just thinking about it

As a palate cleanser, Mineri sings a pop ballad in a gorgeous gown before the proper kuroenbi to Ai, which is a song that has a lot of nostalgic value for me personally, making it a very emotional backdrop to Sora leading an otokoyaku dance with the top star sparkles on her tailcoat and hitting that final pose with a heart-shattering bang. They reprise the two original theme songs for the parade, and that's Hustle Mates.

Additional notes from my particular viewings: I had a lucky aisle seat where Hanaki Maia, who I'm pretty obsessed with, serenaded me, and Mappu gave me a great smile and a little hand squeeze in lieu of a high five. I am completely charmed by Kotti, she's like a Great Dane that grew up and still thinks it's a lap dog—striking otokoyaku on the outside and a sweet shy earnest inside that hasn't quite caught up yet. Senshuuraku should be the day that shows up on Sky Stage eventually, but in the Partial Time Prison scene Homare Seri (playing Rhett Butler) started a really awkward slow clap with the audience in an attempt to ad lib, then had no idea where she wanted to go with it so she just gave SoraLucheni a big hug, and Moeko got flustered, decided that was enough, and cut off everyone’s laughter and applause by stepping in front of the action and saying her next line as loudly as possible.

2015/10/14 KOWICHI “SheCRET” Interview

　今、国内で最もギャルの胸をザワつかせているMCの一人であろう、KOWICHIが、満を持して新作アルバム「SheCRET」を完成させた。前作「THE DINER」からのカット、“BOYRFRIEND #2”の大当たりっぷりはすでにご存知の通り。今年初旬には盟友：DJ TY-KOHと共にミックスCD「STONER LIFE THE MIXTAPE」を発表し、そこからも“LYNE”がスマッシュ・ヒットを記録。軽快さとハードコアさの絶妙なバランスで赤裸々なボーイズ・トークを展開し、これまでの日本語ラップ・シーンにはなかった波を巻き起こした。川崎を代表するMCデュオ：enmakuのメンバーとしてデビューし、オリジナル・ソロ作としてはすでに３作目となる本作「SheCRET」で、KOWICHIが本当に表現したかったものは何か？

■“BOYFRIEND #2”のヒットを叩き出した前作「THE DINER」から1年半も経っているんですね。その間、DJ TY-KOHとのミックステープ「STONER LIFE THE MIXTAPE」のリリースもあって、シーンへの不在感はまったくなかった印象ですが、実際、本作を発表するまではどんな生活でしたか？「TY-KOHとかと遊んで、ミックスCDも出して、ツアーも廻って、という生活でしたね。本当はもっと早く次のアルバムを出すつもりだったんだけど、本当にツアーが忙しくて……っていうのは言い訳で、実際は、次のアルバムをどうしようかって迷っていて」　 ■「SheCRET」はタイトルからも想像が付く通り、かなりハッキリしたテーマが主張されているアルバムだと思いましたけど、最初からこのテーマで行こう、とすんなり決まったわけではない？「タイトルを決めたのは、収録曲全10曲のうち、8曲くらいを録り終えてからですね。『タイトル、どうしよう』と悩んでる内に、気が付いたら女の人を中心に回っているような曲ばかりになっていて。今回は意識的に、自分のダサい部分や弱いところも表現したつもりだったので、“女性”と、“シークレット”がテーマになっているなと。女性との間の秘密じゃないけど、そういう造語にしてみたんです」　 ■逆に言うと、アルバムのテーマにしちゃうくらい女性の存在というのが大きかった？「女性はデカいですよ」　 ■それはやっぱり“BOYFRIEND #2”のヒットがあったから？あの曲のヒット以降、KOWICHIさんを取り巻く環境に変化はあった？「結構、変わったかも。単純に仕事が超増えたっていうのと、あとは、まあ、女の子……」　 ■モテるようになったということ？「ちょっとウルサめなんですが、ありえないモテ方をするようになりましたね。“BOYFRIEND #2”を受けて、『（KOWICHIの）#2になりたい』っていう女の子が普通にたくさんいる、みたいな状況だったんですよ。それってありえないっすよね。ただモテてるだけのラッパーはたくさんいるかもしれないけど、わざわざ『#2になりたい』って言われているラッパーは俺だけなんじゃないかっていうのは超思いますね」　 ■逆に、同性から反発を買うようなことはなかったですか？「同性に関しては、共感してくれるヤツが増えたかな。 “BOYFRIEND #2”を超シリアスに受け取って、『あの曲を聴いて泣いた』とか言ってくれる同性のリスナーもいたし」　 ■ソロMCとしてのデビュー作「THE CHIPS」辺りではギャル・チューンも歌いながら、割とハードコアなスタイルを貫いていた印象があるんです。今のKOWICHIさんと比べたら、作風はかなりドラスティックに変化していると思うんですが、ご自分ではどう感じていますか？「うーん。『THE CHIPS』を出したらモテ始めて、調子に乗りだしたんだよね。そこから自分のライフ・スタイルがどんどん変わっていって。自分にとってはどちらも等身大なんです」　 ■ライフ・スタイルの変化といえば、今年に入ってからDJ TY-KOHやYOUNG HASTLEらとの作品やツアーが増えたという印象もありますけど、そうした仲間との行動が制作に影響を与えたりもした？「影響は受けてますね。最近は、いつも一緒にいるからあまり刺激を受ける、という感じでもなくなってきましたけど。前回、TY-KOHとリリースした『STONER LIFE THE MIXTAPE』では、俺のリリックもTY-KOHにがっつりディレクションを入れられてたし。TY-KOHは、俺がどんな女と遊んでて、誰と今日何をしたか、俺のことや心境まで、彼女バリに分かってるんです。今回の制作において、TY-KOHに唯一言われたのは『ミクステを出してから半年くらいの俺の生活を、そのままリリックに落としたほうがいいんじゃない？』ということだけ。そのアドヴァイスを受けて、リリックもそんなに考え込まず、ありのまま書きました。うん、制作のスタイルは結構変わりましたね。今の方が作りやすい、かな」　

■制作体制とともに、今回は参加アーティスト陣のメンツにも変化があったのかな？と感じました。楽曲毎に、それぞれかなり厳選されたゲストを呼んだのかな？と。リード・シングルになった“No,No,No”では、地元・川崎の後輩にあたるT-PABLOWを迎えていますが。

「客演のアーティストは結構ノリですけどね。T-PABLOWは彼が14歳ぐらいのときから知っていて。でも今回、彼を招いて川崎のフッド・アンセムみたいな曲は敢えてやりたくなかったんですよ。T-PABLOWはストリート・バンガーみたいなリリックを書かせると、生き様が滲み出るような良いリリックを書くと思ってるんですけど、そんなヤツに女の子をテーマにした曲を書かせたらどうなるんだろうと思って。一回、普通に飲んでるときにT-PABLOWの恋愛観を訊いたら、『コイツは彼女を大切に出来ないタイプだな……』と思ったんで（笑）。曲が出来上がってみたら、T-PABLOWの若くてちょっとシャイな人間性も出ていて、良い曲になったなと思いますね」

■逆にYOUNG HASTLE & DJ TY-KOHとの“REAL TALK”なんかでは、女子受けしなさそうなことをテーマに扱っていますけど……。かと思えば、MARIAを招いた“GANGSTA BITCH”なんてのもあったり。「『地味な子あるある』ね（笑）。でも俺、地味な子は別にタイプじゃないんだよね。だから“REAL TALK”を作ってるときに、それを分からせておこうと思って“GANGSTA BITCH”を書いた。俺が好きなのは地味な子じゃなくてギャングスタ・ビッチだから。元々、男のMCを呼ぼうかと思ったんだけど、ギャングスタ・ビッチ的なキャラの子とやった方が面白そうだなと閃いたんです。で、MARIAがいいな、と思ってノリで連絡して。ビートを送った次の日くらいには『（依頼されたのは）16小節だったけど、24小節書いちゃいました』ってMAIRAから返ってきて『ヤベェ』って。レコーディングも30分くらいで終わりましたね」　 ■HI-Dさんとの“思わせぶり”は、USで流行ってるようなTYGAとCHRIS BROWNのノリを強く感じて、KOWICHI君がやりたいことが明確でいいな、と思いました。「そういう、超定番なノリの曲をやりたくて。俺自身も、自分でサビを歌うのは飽きてたし、男の人でセクシーな感じのシンガーの人とやりたいと思ったときに、Hi-Dさんがいいな、と。最初は全然違う感じで作ってたんですけど、『やっぱり止めます。思わせぶりな女の子の話がいい』と言って書き直してもらいました」　 ■いわゆるギャル・チューンも多いですが、今回は“MOTHER”とか“10年後“みたいな曲こそ、今のKOWICHI君だから書ける曲なのかなとも思ったのですが。「逆にそうかもしれないですね。“MOTHER”はJIGG君が早めにトラックを上げてくれていたんだけど、プリプロを録って送り返したらJIGG君から『あんまりイケてなくない？』って言われて、深夜に彼のスタジオに行って何回も録り直したんです。でも良い曲が出来なくて、結局他のトラックを持ち帰ることになった。朝方、JIGG君と解散して家に帰ったら、ちょうど留守電が入ってたんですよ。“MOTHER”のリリックそのまんまの。それで、コレだと思って」　 ■お母さんの立場になると泣けてきますね……。今回、そうしたシリアスな楽曲とギャル・チューンとのバランスが絶妙だなとも感じたのですが、そこは狙っていた？「今回、バランスはまったく考えなかったですね。今回は、特にやりたいことだけをやろうと思って。ビートもほとんどZOT ON THE WAVEに任せて、その中からラップしたらカッコ良くなりそうな曲を選んで作ったって感じですね」　 ■でも、これだけ“BOYFRIEND #2”や“LYNE”みたいな曲が流行ると、周りからも「ギャル・チューンのKOWICHI」みたいなイメージを持たれると思うんですけど、その戦略は「してやったり」という感じ？「うん、そうなんだけど、最近は『ナメんなよ』とも思ってるかな。周りからは『あー、アレね〜』って言われてると思うし、俺がそっちの立場ならそういう風に言いますしね（笑）。別に、ギャル・チューンをやろうとか、モテてやろうとか、ふざけてやろうとか、そういったことは何も考えずにやってるだけなんで。だから、今後どうなるとかも考えてないし」　 ■今回のアルバムを全体的に見ると、男女でかなり印象が異なるアルバムになるんじゃないのかな、という感じがしていて。例えば“No,No,No”なんかは特に顕著で、今、USでも流行っているDRAKE“HOTLINE BLING”みたいに女子なら女子なりのアンサーを返したくなっちゃうタイプの曲だと思うんです。「“No,No,No”は決して、歌詞の内容だけを聞いたら、イイ男とは言えないんですよ。でも、そこを出したかったんです。女の人は『男は女心が分からない』って言うけど、女だって男心は分かってないと思うから、そういうのを、男のための曲として書いたんだよね」　 ■KOWICHIさんの楽曲の強みは、正にそこですよね。リリックの中に女の子とのリアルなエピソードを盛り込んでくれるので、女性の立場からしてみれば、ボーイズ・トークというか、プライヴェートに限定したFacebookのタイムラインなんかを覗き見しているような気持ちになる。「男の子はこんな風に考えてたんだ！」みたいな。「そう、すごく狭い範囲の話をしたかったんですよ。要は、カッコ付けてない自分だったり、悪ぶってない自分だったりとか。さっきも話しましたけど、素の自分を入れたかったんです。それはアルバムを作る段階で決めていたこと。他のラッパーがモテてカッコつけてるような曲とか、ハスリングについて歌ってる曲を聴いても『悪ぶ��てんじゃねえよ』と常々思っていたから、ダサカッコ良いことをすごくやりたかった。アルバムを出す前にAK-69さんの“A Hundred Bottles　REMIX”に呼んでもらったときも、あの曲は『ボトルを100本買い占める』っていう曲だけど、俺は敢えて『お金はない』ってラップしてるくらいだし。　 ■なるほど、腑に落ちたような気がします。また、今後のチャレンジとしてYOUNG HASTLEとのツーマン・ライヴも。「初めての試みなので、緊張しそうだなと思ったりしますけど。計3時間弱くらいのステージを想定して、今、良い感じのセットも組んでます。みんなヤラれるんじゃないかな」　 ■YOUNG HASTLE、そしてDJ TY-KOHとレーベルを立ち上げたという話も聞きますが。「そうなんですよ。俺とヤンハスとDJ TY-KOH。あとはプロデューサーのZOT ON THE WAVEとか、裏方のメンバーとかでFLY BOY RECORDSというレーベルを。もともと、去年くらいからTY-KOHが『来年あたりレーベルをやろう』と言っていて、それが形になったという感じですね。現状、第一弾リリースはヤンハスとTY-KOHのミックスCDの予定。で、11月のツーマン・ライブでFLY BOY RECORDS のお披露目、という感じですね」
