HEY YALL I’VE WRITTEN AN OC INSERT FANFIC!
im really hyped to share it, hope you’ll like it!!
-Hey campers! I have great news!-
Max and others sat there, over a plate with questionable mashed potatoes, which were said to be quartermaster’s speciality. And yet these tasted like dirt. Everyone around had the same faces of doubt and disgust, because even the smell of this food was bad. And since when potatoes smell bad? Not a good sign. At all.
David, smiling and happy as ever, came in and stood there where all campers would see him, but most of them didn’t pay attention, which didn’t demotivate David at all. Max knew that there was almost nothing to make this man lose his optimistic attitude. And he couldn’t decide if it was impressive or just simply annoying. So he just sighted.
-Noone cares David. You made up some lame activity at 7 am, did you expect us to be jumping around? Or climbing on a wall?- Max said. It was true, yesterday David told campers that they will go out for some wood walk. And as if it wasn’t bad, they’d have to leave at 7am because David “wants campers to experience wilderness when at its most beautiful part of day!”. Nobody was excited. Well… Maybe Nikki, but sugar flows through her veins, so she jumped out from her bed as soon as she heard the trumpet, which Max wished he would never hear again.
-Oh come on Max! You will see how Mother nature wakes up to start new day! Lizards go find some warm spots, owls find their nests to rest, day birds sing the loudest at this moment and we might see deer with young! Isn’t it exciting?- David exclaimed, making Max even more grumpy. What does this man take every morning?
-But this is not only great news, fellow campers!- Counselor said, with no effect. Everyone still didn’t seem to bother, but have such things ever discouraged David? Nope.
- I received a call yesterday, a new camper is joining us today!- he exclaimed, and this time, surprisingly, some people looked at him with curiosity. At the same time Neil looked concerned, Nikki was close to exploding and Max just hit his forehead at the table.
-Not another Jermy Fartz…- he mumbled.
-It would be wierd at least if another kid like Jermy came- said Neil, sticking his fork into potatoes. He picked up the plate and turned it upside down, neither potatoes nor fork hit the table, they stayed in their place, sticked to the plate as if glue was used.
-This is…concerning…- he said, when putting his plate back on the table. His friend wasn’t even suprised about this, he never ate these potatoes anyways.
-Now i’m just more concerned about this trip David planned for today. Though on the other hand… maybe bear will maul me or some shit- said Max.
After the breakfast campers went back to their tents to grab important stuff and prepare for the walk into the woods. And nobody was eager to leave their tents after entering, but David literally dragged some of the kids outside, so it was clear, there is no way to avoid this. David was talking about stuff they will see, really happy about this, even more happy than the usual, which was slightly wierd for Max.
-Well… i think he is excited that new camper is coming today- said Neill, when Max pointed it out. Nikki just shrugged.
-Or he just has even better humor, i dunno- she said and ran forward, because she saw their camp mascot platypus, who disappeared two days ago. Everybody was a bit concerned, but only because it would mean they’d have to go look for new mascot. And nobody was willing to do it.
-There she goes…-
-Nikki will dominate all animals around, you’ll see-
-Yeah, maybe she’ll become alpha of some wolf pack or something-
Max laughed at this, but then got quiet and looked to the side, as if he remembered something not so nice. But he came back to reality after a moment. Kid smirked.
-What do you say we go half a mile with this loser and then turn around and go back to camp?- he said to Neill, who thought for a moment.
-What will we be doing there?-
-I dunno, maybe slacking off? Doing what you are supposed to do during summer?- said Max with irony in his voice. He wasn’t in a good humor today and felt like being super salty about everything. Neil just groaned in response.
-You really want to be pain in ass today, huh?-
-You have no goddamn idea-
When group reached the main cabin, in which they had eaten breakfast earlier, suddenly the group stopped. David looked a bit distressed, because somebody was on the roof of the lodge.
-Hey! What are you doing up there? Come down before you’ll get hurt!- he yelled, running towards the house. The person was sitting on the side of the roof, with their legs hanging down. And kid didn’t seem too concerned about where they were sitting.
David went inside the house, probably for the ladder, but when he was struggling to pull it through front door he noticed the kid got down on their own.
-Uhmm this won’t be necessary, mister- she said.
Other kids watched it mostly with interest, but nobody was nervous about this situation. They just looked at the new camper, who was actually probably 14 year old girl. She was wearing green hoodie with short sleeves, red long-sleeved shirt under it, blue shorts and typical high boots perfect for some treckking. She also was wearing yellow lumberjack gloves, but the thing that was most unusual about her was that her hair were dyed to be bright blue, though some brown was visible in places where hair was growing.
She stood there looking a bit guilty, but not scared. David put ladder down carefully. He would have big problems with Gwen if he broke it, because it was their only one and it is never sure when it will be useful.
-Gosh darnit you scared me! How did you get up there?- he asked when approaching that new girl. She scratched her head in embarrassment and smiled.
-I uh… climbed? I mean, i jumped on that box by the wall and grabbed the edge of the roof… i will get into trouble on my first day, won’t I?- she said. David looked at the girl and smiled, still a bit shocked after what he saw.
-Oh don’t worry about it! You kids would go anywhere! So, you are new part of our group for this summer, right?- he leaned towards the girl, who was visibly more comfortable when knowing she isn’t in trouble anymore.
-Yeah! I came here few minutes ago but nobody was here so I thought waiting will be good thing to do- she said.
-Well, if you are our new camper, please introduce yourself to us!- David exclaimed, grabbing her shoulder to turn her so he can face the group of other kids. She surprisingly didn’t seem to be intimidated, more like happy that she can finally leave her excess behind.
-Um… Hi, im Meg!- she said, rising her right hand slightly. David clapped his hands, excited.
-Well, it’s very nice to meet you Meg and I’ll let you know that you arrived just in time, because we were leaving to go to the woods for long and amazing trip!- he said. At the same time Max watched it all, bored. Let’s be honest, he didn’t expect a new camper to appear here in this way, but it’s nothing special. He tried to escape during his first day, just like Nikki  and Neil. Well… they wouldn’t try it if Max didn’t persuade them to do so.
He felt he won’t like this girl, Meg. She seemed annoyingly happy, just like David. Ok, nobody can be this fucking happy 24/7, but still. He smirked after a moment.
-We’ll see how excited you are ‘bout this shitty trip- he said quietly.
But there was one thing that he noticed, how she shivered when David touched her shoulder. It was wierd.
-Ok campers! Let’s go meet mother nature!- said David and went in the direction of that one path they mostly used when going into the forest. Everybody letted out a tired sigh, but followed David anyways.
-Zis isn’t going to be a good time- said Dolph who was walking in front of Max. Meghan waited for the group to pass, and then joined it at the end, happy to go to the forest.
Finally! Away from city, in the place where air is fresh, birds chirp and no sound of cars. Meg was really tired of that lil wierd city so he decided to take some vacation, it would be good for her health. Aaaand… she had a feeling her friends were getting fed up with her. So it will be good for everyone!
She was walking silently, watching the group and surroundings, excited to be here. Kids in front of her weren’t talking much, maybe because of the hour of waking up… There was… girl with green hair, dude which looks like Shakespare, magician, a black girl in some kind of cosplay, some brute, cool girltm, little boy who kinda resembled her of that one german dude, kid who apparently wants to be an astronaut, dude with fluffy brown hair and next to him boy with fluffy black hair, This is one interesting group, Meg felt that it’s gonna be great month. But there was no sight of that one kid with blonde hair she saw through the window of bus when she was coming here. She even pointed out to that scary driver some camper was out there in the forest, but he didn’t seem to care… or he didn’t hear her. It’s not sure, because he is so old he might be deaf.
-Uhm… sooooo…- she started, trying to make a conversation with two boys in front of her. Dude with brown hair turned around to look at her, though he seemed nervous, while black-haired dude didn’t even react.
-This is everyone in group, right?-
-Yeah, David wouldn’t let anybody stay in the camp during this trip- said that guy with brown hair.
-Oh by the way, what’s your name dude?- she asked, coming closer to hear these two in front better.
-Oh, I’m Neil and this is Max- Neil said while pointing at boy next to him, who just looked back at her. It’s been a long time since she saw somebody this bored. Well… guys in school looked like this few days ago.
-You are… Meg, right?-
-Yeah! And I’ll be honest with you guys, i have a feeling this is going to be one of the best summers ever!- she said, filled with excitement, while Max said to himself that he will always stay at least 5 meters away from her.
At that moment Nikki came back, covered in mud and with some twigs in her hair. She was holding something fluffy and small in her hands and before she said anything Meg ran towards her and kneeled, her irises really big.
-Is that a squirrel?- she asked, not stopping to look at the animal Nikki brought. She nodded furiously.
-Yea! And it has this funny thing on it’s head see?- She said
They were left behind, which made Max sigh in relief.
-I won’t be able to not do something to her. She is like… David or some shit- he said, not bothering to check if two girls are catching up.
-At least it isn’t another Jermy Fatrz- said Neil, but Max wasn’t sure which one of them would be worse.
-Hah, i dunno man-
After minute or two girls caught up, talking excitedly. Boys noticed they both had some scratches on their faces… Well, Nikki had some more new scratches. But they both looked really happy.
-Wow, I haven’t been attacked by a squirrel in a long time! Last time was when somebody feeded park squirrels with coffee-dipped nuts. It was wild dude!- Meg was talking loudly.
-Wow it even bit you! Didn’t it hurt?- asked Nikki, excited just like new camper, who shrugged and showed her hand with thick glove on.
- Nope, i didn’t feel anything! These are really useful!- Meg said, proudly.
-You wear them all the time?- asked Nikki, and Meg nodded in response.
-Well… Yeah! Just, you’ll never know what will happen next moment!- she said and two girls finally caught up with the group.
-Guyguyguyguys! That squirrel attacked us! It was wild! But we kicked it into the bushes!- said Nikki, really happy about this little adventure.
-Uhh… are you sure you won’t get sick? Some animals carry diseases… Well, al of them- Neil pointed out, while Max just shrugged.
-Oh don’t worry, you body must experience everything to be less vulnerable in the future- answered Meg, which ticked Max off even more.
-Wow, and i thought we can’t have more smartasses in this godforsaken place- he said, which caught Meg off-guard. She looked at him for a second. Wow, so this is the typical camp douche who can’t have fun apparently. She just needs another tactic when it comes to mr. Grump.
-Man, at least there are some smart people, huh?- she said, smirking. It sounded surprisingly salty, but Meg immediately dropped the salty mask and smiled again.
-Oh dude, come on. How bad can it be?- she said. Max turned around with a bit of satisfaction on his face.
-Oh you’d be surprised-
Nikki sighted.
-Well, you just have to be carefully around Nurf because he can pull out a lot of knives from his pockets. And we still don’t know where he gets these- she said.
-And uhh… David can be annoying- Nial added. Meg looked forward. David was leading group deeper into the forest, but they still were in this more open and brighter part of the woods. And the counselor seemed as ecstatic as when he greeted Meg back at camp.
-He seems nice. Is he always this happy?- she asked.
-Unfortunately, he is almost never down and I swear it makes me sometimes want to snap someone’s neck. Especially his- Max was the one to answer this time. Meg looked at him, slightly concerned about this last thing.
-Oh…- she said and for next hour they all four were silent, though when the group started walking around on more mountainous terrain, then everyone was wheezing, trying to catch up with David, because that son of a devil apparently had so much energy that mountains were the same as simple campgrounds. Even Nikki had enough of this and she just like others, literally threw herself on a ground when a break was announced. Max at that time approaches David, really mad.
-Wow, you’ve put us through such a shit I swear David, this trip must be worth this hell- he said aggressively, but counselor just patted the boy on his head.
-Oh Max, haven’t you noticed how wonderful it is? Haven’t you seen all these animals?- David asked cheerfully.
-Well, i saw one squirrel attack Meg and Nikki, but eh- boy shrugged. His words slightly concerned David. Why didn’t he know about this? He quickly approached two girls, talking while lying on that one bigger rock. It was pleasantly warm thanks to the sun.
-And then that bus caught on fire and…-
-Um, girls? I’ve heard you had a… situation… with wild animal. Are you both ok?- David interrupted Meg’s story, but she didn’t seem to mind.
-Nah, we’re good- she said and quickly got back to the story she was telling. Nikki was listening carefully.
-And believe me or not, we actually didn’t suffer! I had barely any burns or scratches! But my pal, he yhh… got blasted away by a bomb in that suitcase…- David didn’t hear anymore bc he had to go forward and check out their trail. He planned to avoid Sleepy Pine at all costs.
~~~~~~~~~~~
-Ok my feet will hate me for next few days and don’t expect me to get outta my bed- Meg said something, what everybody was thinking. It was long past evening meal, maybe 11pm at best. Nobody wanted to go eat anyways, sleep was their ultimate desire and as soon as the group reached the main lodge, they went to their tents as fast as they could. David had to show Meg her tent, which Gwen set up while they all were gone.
-Everyone wake up at 7am for breakfast in main lodge, where you get food made by our Quartermaster, you also can choose diffrent drinks. But no coffee-
Meg wasn’t listening, she just wanted this dude to go away, she was super tired and she couldn’t breathe good, but she tried to hide it. During the entire walk she had big difficulties with keeping up, especially on that mountainous part of track. She thought she’d suffocate.
-Ok David, i really need to sleep, thanks for everything- she finally said with hardly hidden pain. David smiled.
-Ah no problem. Good night! We are really happy to have you here at Camp Cambell!- he said and left. Meg quickly entered her tent and checked if tent drapes are closed and took off her shirt. Beneath which there were bandages wrapped around her torso, binding something to it. She took these off as fast as she can, revealing small, blue set of wings. She spreaded them as much as she could in this tiny tent and took few really deep breaths. It was such a great feeling, being able to finally breathe normally. She couldn’t leave the group to take these off, it would be suspicious. But let’s hope it won’t be the same during the rest of camp. Or she’d just pass out one day, and then people would be curious and they might find out…
Ok, don’t think about this, it won’t happen.
She took off her gloves too, revealing clawed hands covered with green scales, which were going all up to her arms and down her back. That’s why she was wearing those, but… Yeah lumberjack gloves are simply handy, today’s action with squirrel proved it.
-Damn, what a relief- Meg said and chuckled when throwing herself her bed. She finally could swear without anybody judging her.
-This is gonna be such a great summer- girl said and as soon as she closed her eyes she fell asleep. She really wanted to leave that city, it was starting to be really tiring, the everlasting noise and stench of her hideout behind that one library. Now she was there, surrounded by woods, with no sound of cars. Simply sounds of night.
It’s gonna be indeed best summer. Unless people find out what she really is…
But it won’t happen.
Watch Me Stand - Chapter 2
Chapter One ( Prologue ) Read on ao3
So this boy, this Jack Kelly --  He could talk. He was strong and didn't once falter in his step. He walked with purpose, his head held high, a smile seemingly permanent on his face. Charlie clung onto his back as he walked, focusing on not being sick again. It wasn't too terribly hard now. There wasn't anything left in his stomach after all. Jack talked and Charlie listened. He listened to stories. Stories that didn't make sense to him at all -- Stories about love and friendship and acceptance... Happiness. Stories about his own mother who had recently passed away. Stories of his father breaking his back to take care of him.
"You're gonna love it here with me and the fellas. Mostly I stay with my ol' man, but when he works real late, I like to stay at the lodgin' house with the other boys." He was trying to distract Charlie... Keep him awake. "Hey, you don't talk much, huh?"
Charlie leaned his head down, keeping quiet, not wanting to risk punishment. He didn't know this boy -- Not really. His eyelids were heavy. Jack remained quiet for a moment, giving him a chance to reply. He didn't.
"That's alright. You ain't gotta talk if you don't want to." He rounded a corner and shifted. Charlie felt himself slip and yipped, clinging tighter to Jack's back. "Whoa whoa! Hey it's okay! I got'cha!" He turned his head to the side, trying to get a look at Charlie's wide, scared eyes. "I ain't gonna let'cha fall. Don't worry!"
Charlie was trembling now. If he fell -- What would happen to his leg? Would it break? Would it hurt more than it already did? Would he hit his head and fall asleep? What if he didn't wake up? Would that be better?
"Charlie." Jack's voice broke through Charlie's fear. He tried to relax, focusing on the feeling of Jack's thin arms holding him tighter. "I got'cha."
Six.
Charlie's mind usually clouded with doubt. His mind was usually plagued by thoughts of wanting to sleep and never wake up. At only six years old -- His mind was too young to be thinking that way and yet... "Charlie."
Jack's voice again. His mind calmed, his muscles relaxed, tears fell.
Jack's face was twisted with concern. "You... You's gonna be okay." He picked up his pace, his vision set on a big building coming into view. The lodging house. "There -- See? We're already there! We's gonna get'cha all set up. Grab you a bite to eat, get'cha a bed and blanket... You's gonna get better in no time!"
Charlie's eyes dried up and he sniffled, lifting his head to examine his surroundings. The buildings were tall, there were people coming and going in every direction. The sky was darkening -- Thunder. "Ah... And a good thing too, huh?" Charlie could feel Jack tense. "Let's get'cha inside."
He closed his eyes. What now? Would he be locked in a small room again? Would he be allowed to see the outside again after this? Would he be punished for intruding? Mere moments felt like an eternity. He was only six.
"Hey! Finch, Racer, Spoons! Mr. Klopmann!" Jack kicked the door, not wanting to let go of the small boy attached to his back. "Open up fellas!"
A gentle voice called out from behind the door -- Charlie didn't open his eyes. Not yet. "Alright, alright! I'm comin'!" A click, squeak and a groan. "Kid, you know you don't have to -- You found someone, did you?"
"He's real sick -- Ain't got no where to go."
"Folks?" The voice asked. It sounded older, obviously an adult.
Jack replied with a simple twist of his head. Charlie's chest tightened.
"He ain't a runaway is he? You know the rules, Jack."
"No sir!" Jack interrupted,  "And -- And I can pay for him!"
Charlie opened his eyes slowly, looking up to see the man that had opened the door. He was dizzy -- But the man had thin wired glasses, crow's feet and light lines in his skin. His hair was turning gray. He looked so kind. Charlie lifted his head slightly, his own eyes shining with tears.
Mr. Klopmann swatted at Jack, wrinkling his nose. "Come on in. I've got a bed for 'im."
Another crash of thunder. Jack jumped and whimpered a bit, slipping in quickly around the older man. Charlie could feel Jack's shoulders trembling. "Y'okay...?" His voice was weak and quiet, but steady. Thunder used to frighten him, but it quickly turned to comfort as he grew. It kept him company on the most quiet nights.
Jack shrugged his shoulders and laughed, nervous. "Yeah, I'm fine! It just -- Caught me off guard, ya know? It was real loud I wasn't expectin' it!" He stepped to one side, holding him tighter.
Charlie's lips twitched up into the smallest smile. "Yeah... It was pretty loud." He leaned his head to the side, nuzzling into Jack's dark hair and closing his eyes again. It was getting harder to stay awake now and this was so comfortable -- For the first time in his life, he felt safe.
"You ain't scared... Is you?" Jack asked, biting his lip. Charlie felt him begin to walk again, but his eyes wouldn't open.
"No." Charlie's voice was barely audible now, wrapped in the safety of this impossible boy's arms. He felt Jack's shoulders tense a bit, lacing false bravery into them.
"Good. Ain't nothin' to be afraid of." Jack spoke softly now, a gentle waver in his words. Charlie could tell -- As young as they both were, that Jack tried so hard to be fearless around people. He was a leader. Charlie's heart fluttered. Had he actually made a friend? For the first time, did someone actually care about him? Maybe he wasn't as bad as his parents had said after all.
"Heya Jack! Whoa!! Who's that, huh?" A small voice chimed in over the sound of rain hitting the windows.
"Hey!! You're back! You gonna stay the night? Ohh! A new kid!" Another voice.
"Ahh, Jack!! I'm glad your here! Did'ja hear the thunda?" A third voice shuddered. "It sounds real bad..."
"Hey, it's gonna be alright! It's just a little storm. Nothin' to worry about." Jack assured, though he himself doubted that. Another clap of thunder. This time, it shook the whole building. The small group of boys yipped and gathered close, hovering close together. Jack's shoulders trembled, but he straightened and took a deep breath. "Alright boys, quiet down. It's just thunder. It can't hurt you. 'Sides..."
Charlie was fading fast. Everyone's words sounded slurred, muddied together. He tried to make sense of what he could.
"Who is it?" Asked one quiet voice.
"I found -- real sick." It was Jack's voice.
"--'s a matter -- his leg?" Another one.
"Pipe down Race! -- Ya he's --" He couldn't focus anymore. He felt his heart slow, his breathing steady, his muscles relax. He let himself fall into the blankness of his mind. If he didn't wake up, at least he got at least these few moments with -- A friend.
Six.
Charlie slept more than he was awake. He couldn't remember much -- How many days had it been? He would open his eyes for a few minutes and take in his surrounding. Nothing much -- A small window over his head in the brick wall behind him, the rest was white curtains. They surrounded him, hiding him from the view of anyone who could possibly walk by. He wasn't allowed to see anyone aside from the few nurses and doctors that would come and go, but he knew he wasn't alone. When he could stay awake, he heard other boys coughing, getting sick or crying.
He opened his eyes to see the sun shine through that small window and when he opened them again -- Darkness. It was like he was being turned on then off over and over and over again. His leg ached, his stomach was in knots, his head throbbed, his throat burned. His eyes were sunken in, his freckled cheeks hollowed. He heard a doctor say that he didn't have much hope. He gave him a few days at most --
Charlie didn't know what that meant.
One night -- Jack snuck in.
"Charlie?" His voice was hushed and gentle.
"Mmnn..." Charlie groaned, carefully shaken out of his sleep. He opened his tired and weak eyes and forced his head to the side to meet Jack's gaze.
He smiled. "How're you doin'?"
What could he say to Jack? Friends were supposed to be honest with each other right? Though, was he even right to call Jack a friend? Could he be so bold to do something like that, to even think something like that? Did he deserve Jack's friendship when he had nothing to give in return? His friendship wasn't worth anything to anyone. He'd never even had a friend before.
He closed his eyes again, taking in a weak and rattling breath. "Okay." Was all he said. It wasn't a lie, but it wasn't the whole truth. He was only six -- How was he meant to explain the crippling pain he felt every single time he was awake. How could he begin to tell this other boy, this boy so wise for his age, that he didn't understand what the doctors meant when they said they had no hope. No hope for what? For him to get better? For him to walk again? For him to have friends or family? "I'm scared." He felt his eyes burn, tears threatened from behind his eyelids. He didn't know why he said it.
"Hey -- Don't worry 'bout it!" Jack gently hit Charlie's small shoulder with a small fist, playful. "You's is gonna get better an' when you do, you can meet all the fellas! We's gonna show you 'round and teach you games! We'll all be great friends." Charlie felt Jack climb up and onto the bed to sit next to him. "Ya know, my dad was kinda sick like this once. He got real tired, couldn't stay awake, he could hardly get up. But he got better after couple'a days."
Charlie couldn't move -- His entire body ached. "It ain't worth it." He was only six and somehow, he couldn't stop thinking that way. His parents made sure he remembered that he would be better off... Gone. That he was a mistake. A bad kid.
"It is worth it." His tone turned serious. "My mother told me before she passed on, to always do what you are afraid to do."
Charlie opened his eyes, tears falling.
"Just 'cause you're scared... Don't mean it ain't worth it to try. Charlie, I want you to get better! All the fellas, they's excited to meet you. You gotta get better, even though you're afraid." Jack set his hand against Charlie's matted, sweat dampened hair. "Try to be brave -- But if you can't, I'll be brave for you."
Six.
Something Jack had said resonated with him. It was time for him to stop thinking the way he had been. It was time for him to get better -- To prove that he wasn't such a bad kid. He was going to be brave, was going to make friends, was going to make Jack proud. His first friend.
The days were getting longer for Charlie. He was able to stay awake much longer, his appetite had returned, his cheeks filled back out. The dark circles under his eyes lightened, his skin regained it's color. He smiled more than a few times and his head stopped aching. Although -- His right leg was... Twisted and useless. The pain was present, but dull. Nothing he couldn't handle. They said he'd probably never be able to use his leg again but -- The doctor called him a miracle.
The curtain pulled back.
"Charlie!" Jack stood next to the older man that had greeted him when he'd arrived that first day. "They say you can leave! You get to come be with us now!" He was beaming, his eyes glistened in the sunlight. "Now I can teach you how to play catch and how to sell a pape and --"
The man cut him off. "Settle down, boy. Let the kid breathe." He walked forward and set his hand on Charlie's head, comforting. "Feelin' better?"
Charlie looked up at the man, his eyes wide and full of wonder. Tenderness directed at him, from another adult? "Yes, sir." He quickly dropped his eyes, not wanting to let them linger on the man's face for too long.
"Good. You're under my care now. I'm Mr. Klopmann, I help run the Duane Street logdin' house." He gestured back to Jack. "I'll let Mr. Kelly fill you in on the rules of the house and leave it to him to show you 'round -- But if you need anything. You can come see me." He smiled down at Charlie and ruffled his hair. "You're safe here."
"Safe..." Charlie repeated, his eyes still on his lap. "Thank you, sir." He looked up at Klopmann and smiled. It lit up the entire room.
"Don't mention it," he looked back at Jack who was holding something behind his back. "Jack."
Jack was quiet, examining Charlie's smiling face -- His cheeks were flushed.
"Jack." Klopmann cleared his throat.
"Oh! R - Right!" He stepped forward, and grinned. "We have a surprise for you."
"A 'prise?" Charlie looked to Jack, his head tilting to the side.
"Close your eyes, and don't open them!"
Charlie obliged.
"Now hold out your hands." Charlie could hear the excitement in Jack's voice. He did as he was told.
Something long was set in his hands. It was hard, cool to the touch, sturdy, a little rough...
"Okay... Open them!"
Slowly, Charlie opened his eyes and looked down at his hands and the object in them. A long piece of wood with a handle. Padding at the top -- A giant red bow was tied around the middle, messy writing covered a piece of paper that dangled from that. What was this?
"It's a crutch! It's gonna help you walk!" Jack crossed his arms, beaming with pride in himself. "I mean -- It's gonna help you walk until you can walk all by yourself again!"
"Yeah..." Charlie examined the crutch, his small fingers feeling the bow and wandering down to grab at the paper that hanged from it. It said something but -- "What's it say?"
"Oh! Uh -- Haha..." Jack reached behind his head to rub at the back of his neck. "Well - See..." He walked up to him and pointed at the few words written in a sloppy hand. "It says," he pointed to each word as he said them out loud. "To Charlie. From Jack. And here --" He pointed to the last word, "Crutchie." Jack smiled and looked to Charlie's face. "Lots of the boys 'round here have nicknames, you know? Like -- Patrick? He's Finch. Benny goes by Buttons. It's fun! So I thought... Maybe you'd like to have one too, you know?"
"Crutchie?" He looked to Jack then back down at the crutch in his hands.
"Yeah, I mean -- You ain't gotta use it! I just --"
"No. I -- I like it." Charlie looked up at him, smiled again and Jack's world stopped spinning.
"Really?" He smiled back, sticking his hands into his pockets. "Good!"
"Do... You got a nickname, too?" Charlie asked, bringing the crutch against his chest, cherishing it. His first gift.
"Sometimes they call me cowboy -- But mostly I'm just Jack." He was clearly proud of his nickname, his shoulders shrugged and his grin turned almost to snark.
"Cowboy?" Charlie perked up, hoping for more of his stories.
"Yeah! You know like Buffalo Bill!" Jack's grin widened. "Oh, kid I can't wait to show you my dime novels! The ol' man gets me a new one every couple weeks when he's got a little extra dough."
"I --" He stopped.
"Don't worry if you can't read yet. I'll teach you! We'll read the stories together. I'm still learnin' too, so it ain't nothin' to worry about. Charlie, you're gonna love 'em! There's one I got --"
Charlie listened with everything he had. He didn't even notice that Klopmann had left -- His eyes followed Jack's expressive movements and his smiles and frowns. He laughed when Jack used a silly voice when he'd recite a line. The sun moved in the sky -- He let himself get caught up in the adventures and the happiness that was painted across Jack's young face. He had managed to forget about his parents -- Forget the pain and his leg, forget being left on the street all those days ago. He forgot for a moment, that he was a bad kid. It was a beautiful feeling. His heart was full, but his stomach --
"Whoa, what was that?" Jack laughed and pointed at Charlie's thin frame. "You keepin' some sort of creature in there?"
Charlie giggled, tilting his head down to hide his pink cheeks. "No -- I'm just a little hungry is all!"
"Well, what are you waitin' for, huh?" He cocked his head back and took a step back and towards the door. "Let's get outta here."
Charlie watched him for a moment, a smile still reaching his eyes. "Yeah..." He turned to the side, his feet dangling over the edge of the bed. He held the crutch tight in his small hands and set it on the ground. Jack watched with bated breath and bit his lip, waiting patiently, ready to help if need be. Charlie breathed in deep, closed his eyes and slid off the bed, his feet landing gently on the ground beneath him. He cringed and stumbled as the weight on his right leg proved too much and it gave out, useless. Though -- he caught himself, using the crutch for support.
Jack's brows were furrowed together, worried. "You got it?"
"Y - yeah." Charlie clenched his jaw and tried to take a step but stumbled again. "I just -- I gotta get used to it." He was going to make this work. Jack got this crutch for him, and if it weren't for him, Charlie would have given up and let himself fall asleep for good when he was sick. He wasn't going to fail Jack now. Another step. It was cleaner than the first two, but he still struggled to keep his balance.
"You ain't gotta... I can help!"
"No! No..." Charlie looked at him and smiled, nodding his head. "I got this!" His eyes were sparkling with a clear determination. "I can do it!" His heart beat faster -- Just take it slow. One moment at a time. He leaned his weight on the crutch and moved his left foot, then shifted and moved the crutch and his right -- "Hah!"
Jack breathed and smiled, setting his hands on his hips. "Good job!"
Charlie's heart sang. "I got it... I got it!" Another step. Jack took another step back, watching him. "I can do it!" He took another step and another faster and cleaner each time before he came to a stop, right in front of his friend.
"Ahh, that's great Charlie!" Jack reached out and wrapped his arms around Charlie's small frame. "I'm proud of ya!"
He froze for a moment, but quickly regained himself and brought his arms up to return that warm embrace. "I couldn't have done it without you, Jack."
"No, Charlie. You did this on your own." He pulled away, his hands set firm on Charlie's shoulders. "You're amazing, kid."
He smiled again, his head dipping down to look at his feet not knowing how to reply.
"Now come on. Let's go meet the fellas." Jack turned his back and started slowly out the door.
Charlie stood still for a moment -- Letting himself have a moment to process, take it all in and prepare himself. This was the start of something completely new. Something better than what he had before. Something that was safe and kind and happy.
"You comin'?" Jack had stopped in the doorway and looked over his shoulder, that now familiar grin on his face.
"Yeah!" Charlie nodded and limped forward, each one of his step now certain. Each step he could hear more and more -- There were boys waiting outside the door. He paused.
"Hah... Yeah -- They were real excited." Jack shrugged, "Hope it --"
"Can it, Jack!" A small boy pushed past Jack and into the room, right up to Charlie.  "Good to see ya'ain't dead." He crossed his arms, his light curls bouncing on his head. He had a cigar in his mouth. Charlie took a step back, taken a bit off guard.
"Yeah! It's about time you's awake! We all thought we wouldn' get ta meet'cha."  Another boy joined the first. A slingshot stuck out of the hem of his pants. "I'm jus' glad I ain't the newest no more!"
"Guys back down! You don't wanna scare 'im!" A third boy, this one was wearing glasses, tall and wiry.
"Um --" Charlie looked back and forth from each one of them then craned his neck trying to see Jack. He was so much smaller than the others he couldn't --
"Hey!" Jack's voice broke out over the other three. "I didn't tell you's you could could come up here and jus' start yellin' at him!" He pushed past the one with the cigar and stood in front of Charlie, protective.
"Hey, we weren't doin' nothin' wrong. We just wanted --"
"Cool it, Racer." Silence followed.
"Jack I --" Charlie spoke quietly, peeking out from behind him. "I'm okay." A smile --
The room brightened again. All of the boys held their breath.
"Well then." The boy with the slingshot stepped forward, spitting in, and offering his hand. "The name's Finch. Ain't no one can match my aim."
Charlie stepped out from behind Jack and nodded, still cautious. "Finch..." He thought for a moment, then spit in his own palm. He took Finch's hand and gave it a weak shake.
"The name's Racetrack Higgins." The boy with the cigar pulled Finch back, and grinned. "You can call me Race if you want." He sniffed and shrugged his shoulders. "You need anythin' you can come talk to me. I'll take care of it for ya. Ain't nothin' I'm afraid of."
"And --" The third, and tallest of all of them came forward, waving softly. "I'm Specs." He tilted his glasses and smiled. "If he bothers you at all," he gestured to Race and raised his brow. "Come get me. I know how to deal with this wise guy."
"What's that supposed'ta mean, huh?" Race turned to Spec, puffing out his chest.
Specs laughed in response and pat his head. "I'm jokin' Racer, take a breath."
"And when these two guys get into it, you always got me. We can watch the show together." Finch nudged Charlie's shoulder and chuckled, shaking his head. "Me, I never get into this stuff."
"Finch, don't act like you don't sit in the bunks at night and shoot rocks at us just to start fights." Race pointed his cigar at the brunette.
"I wouldn't ever do somethin' like that! It's gotta be them bed bugs bitin' you. Maybe try to wash your socks more, huh? Maybe they wont keep attackin' ya." He swatted at his nose and grimaced. "I can smell them through your shoes."
"Oh sure, Finch, sure! Don't try to act like you're a tough guy now. You were cryin' like a baby the other night when you couldn't find that thing." Race tried to snatch the slingshot from Finch's waist, but stumbled when he took a step back.
"Now this, kid --" Specs stuck his hands in his pockets and laughed. "This is good stuff!"
"Yeah okay, Racer. You won't be laughin' when Klopmann finds out you been chewin' on cigars again."
"You wouldn't dare."
"Wanna try me?"
Charlie laughed when Race wrapped an arm around Finch and held him down. They struggled against each other, mumbling words Charlie couldn't understand. This was a game to them -- It was easy for him to see the difference between how his parents had treated him and how they were treating each other. This was fun, playful. Now he got to experience it, too. His heart fluttered and his cheeks began to hurt from smiling. "Fellas! Be nice!"
Jack stood back watching them, watching Charlie and smiled. He knew Charlie would be a good fit. As soon as he found him on the street he knew he had the potential to brighten up everyone's day -- And when he smiled, Charlie proved him right. He deserved the chance to be happy just as the rest of these boys did. Jack beamed at them. He couldn't wait for Charlie to see the world. To see things how they were meant to be seen. To not have to live in fear anymore. "Alright kids -- Let's get goin'."
"Hey we ain't done here yet, Kelly." Race held up a hand to stop Jack's words of protest. "He ain't even told us his name yet."
Charlie blinked and looked back at Jack quickly before regarding the others once more. "Oh I --  I'm sorry." He let his lip crack another small smile, another smile to make Jack's breath catch. "I'm Crutchie."
14 or 18 for jackcrutchie!!
THANK YOU!! i did 18 buT i might do 14 sometime- im already planning another jackcrutchie fic tho and theyd be kissing a lot in that sOOO!!!
things you said when you were scared
Crutchie liked sleeping on the roof with Jack.
Though there was a cool breeze that sure, was nice in the summer, but sent chills down his back during the winter. And yeah, the hard surface of the roof would never be as comfortable as a bed. And Jack would always complain, that Crutchie needed a bed for proper rest, that it’d be no good if he couldn’t use his leg and his back hurt- but quite frankly, Crutchie didn’t care.
Not after the first night that Crutchie had slept up on the roof with Jack, at least.
The night after Jack first came back from the refuge. They were both young, both fourteen years old, and Jack had obtained (stolen, Crutchie was sure, but had never bothered to ask) some candy and soft drinks to celebrate. At first, everyone celebrated downstairs- everyone asking Jack what it was like, how escaping was, praising him on what a hero he is. Then, as the younger newsies were sent to bed, and the older ones started saying goodnight, Jack smiled at Crutchie.
“’Spose you probably want to go to sleep soon.”Crutchie couldn’t deny he was getting a bit tired. He liked to sleep early and rise early, there was no use being exhausted while selling. But he also had missed Jack.
At fourteen, Crutchie was just starting to realise that he may not have been as straight as originally thought. Of course, that had nothing to do with his best friend. Sure, he’d found himself blushing when Jack leaned on him, or checking out looking at Jack for a bit too long. But that was just because Jack was Jack, Crutchie told himself. Nevertheless, he shrugged.
“I dunno. I guess I should be sleepin’, but I don’t wanna stop talkin’ just yet.” He smiled hopefully at Jack. “Maybe I could come up an’…?”
Jack nodded quickly, to Crutchie’s surprise. He didn’t know of anyone else who Jack really let up on the roof since he’d started sleeping there, only a year or so before. Though open in his affection for the other newsies, when it came to the roof and his artworks, Jack was a private person.
So they’d gone up onto the roof, with Jack helping Crutchie climb up, and Crutchie had brought his blanket and pillow from his bed and they’d lay down, looking up at the night sky, and talked quietly. As they talked, the subject shifted back to the refuge.
“Did Snyder really treat you all like that?” Crutchie asked, slowly, sympathetically.
Jack nodded. “I didn’t include all the details, talkin’ down there with all the boys.”
“And girls,” Crutchie laughed. “Smalls’d kill ya if you forgot ‘bout her..”Jack laughed, not his usual laugh, though. A sadder, more nervous one- like something was playing on his mind. “Yeah, an’ girls.”
Crutchie hesitated. Jack was so often happy, or at least seeming like it- that, or determined to sell papers. And Crutchie was sure he’d seen Jack upset before, but he had always tried to hide it. Now, Jack was just staring up at the sky with a frown, his eyes closed. Crutchie noticed his hands were shaking. He moved closer to Jack.
“You knows you okay now, right, Jack? You safe here, with me.”Jack nodded, but he still looked, if Crutchie was being honest, terrified. He looked over to Crutchie, opening his eyes.
“Snyder’s gonna be lookin’ for me. No one gets outta the refuge without him on their heels. What if he gets me, Crutchie? An’ I go back, an’ he’ll be watchin’ me real close this time?”
Before he knew what he was doing, Crutchie had reached out and taken both of Jack’s hands in his own, running his thumb comfortingly over the backs of Jack’s hands. “He won’t, Jack. Yous too smart for him, an’ fast- you can outrun him, hey? An’ you can run over here an’ Kloppman will hide ya, or to Medda’s theatre- and if any’a the other newsies see ya, you know we won’t sell ya out for anythin’.”
Jack was silent. He squeezed his eyes shut again, nodding, clearly trying his best to believe Crutchie. Crutchie pulled Jack in close, letting Jack bury his head in his shoulder. “I’m here for ya, Jack. No way you gonna be stayin’ in the refuge again on my watch.” He pressed a kiss to the top of Jack’s head, and Jack became less tense, relaxing into Crutchie’s arms.After he’d calmed Jack down, they both fell asleep like that, curled close.
To this day, Crutchie still liked falling asleep next to Jack. Lying on the roof beside each other was where they talked about all their worries, fears, dreams- everything.
And Crutchie wouldn’t mind all the back pain in the world to fall asleep cuddling Jack.
Home (chapter one)
a/n: TRIGGER WARNING: mentions of violence and gun violence
    Being bounced around from foster home to foster home was, different. But it was not fun non the less. Avenue knew that to be true.         After being taken away at the age of six from her parents. Her mom dead with a belt around her bicep and a needle stuck in it and her father out of his mind. Now at the ripe old age of 15 the girl had grown into herself a bit. She had pale skin, dark brown hair that was a weird combination of curly and wavy, light brown eyes with green sprinkled around the edges. Her voice was low and raspy, being spoken with a pair of plump lips, small nose, and thick eyebrows.
    The girl grew used to being moved every 2-3 months. But, this being the case, Every social worker She’d had all think the same way. The basic teenager trying to rebel against society. Ave didn’t have the best track record though. She had trespassed, stolen, talked crap to any sort of authorative figure… been arrested to many times to count. Before all that ahe had one person that she could trust with her life, but people move on.  It was nights like this when Avenue missed her the most. But that’s besides the point. The girl getting a new social worker today. Avenue was sick of this.         It’s going to be the same story, they say that she can’t be that bad and then they give up on me about a month into it. In all honesty the girl just wanted someone not to give up. It gets tiring, considering that they are usually all old people who hold you up too high expectations. This time she really did it, now residing in not in a foster home, but a dump; a group home. It sucks, but you know, it can’t be that bad, it could be worse right? Wrong. Everyone here thinks that they have a chance of getting adopted or have a chance for redemption but they are oblivious to the fact that they are here until someone is dumb enough to adopt them. Not to mention the owner of this dump is like the wicked witch of the west, her hame is Maria (sounds like a jackass name right?)
     So this is really where the story begins. “Hurry up and get your lazy ass out of bed and come down here!” Maria called from the downstairs. The girl rolled my eyes, swung the covers off of her body, quickly changed into a random oversized t-shirt and skinny jeans, no socks, she hated socks, finally trudged down the stairs.
   At that moment standing towards the entrance of the building was a women who looked to be around her mid 30s, with dark black hair, electric green eyes that seemed to swallow you whole, pale skin, plumps lips, and smoking figure. What they both didn’t know is that this moment would change both their lives.  She smiled sweetly and Ave- for some reason not known to her- smiled back. The green eyes lady walked towards , Ave slowly until she said in a deep raspy tone “Hi my name is Lauren Jauregui, and I’m your new social foster mother.”
    Lauren approached Avenue with great caution not exactly sure what was going though her mind. Her face may be completely still as if a Greek stone statue, but her eyes told an entirely different story. Her eyes told every though and emotion racing through Avenue’s mind at that one time. Lauren extended her hand while still looking at Avenue. Avenue hesitated before shaking Lauren’s hand.“ You too will be spending lots of time together so don’t make it awkward on the first day Avenue.”, Maria fake smiled and so did Avenue. “Lauren you can go up to her room, she will be right up.” Maria told Lauren. She just nodded and disappeared behind the wall that separated them from the stairs.
     Maria slowly turned towards Ave. The girl knew that exact look. She just closed her eyes took a deep breath and opened ready for Maria’s words.
     Lauren on the other hand sat on the bed in the room that was Avenue’s. Lauren read her file, she knew exactly what she was getting herself into. But when Tyler called earlier this morning and she heard desperation in his voice, she agreed to meet the kid. Now  lauren knew what he meant in saying “that kid just needs a home.” Avenue’s eyes were wild and just scared. Looking at Lauren’s every move for a motive.    The room was small and cramped, the bed was quickly made, a small backpack layed on the floor next to a desk with a notebook and random sheet music screwn over it. Lauren looked at the small book collection on the desk, Yellow by Lena Nottingham, The Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allen Poe, good taste kid. Quickly going through the book and the book had writing and underlining and highlighting throughout it.    The door opened and Avenue entered with the same emotionless expression. Lauren was the first to speak, “how bout I help you grab your things kiddo and we can get outta here?” Ave just nodded and started stuffing the small amount of clothes and belongings she had into the backpack. Lauren helped as much as she could but let Ave have her space. The pair finished up and made their way to Lauren’s beat up Honda. Ave took the passenger seat, Lauren the drivers and made the way to the Cabello-Jauregui residence. Lauren looked over at the girl staring out the window mouthing the lyrics to the Drake song playing Hold on, were going home        How ironic. Lauren quickly looked back at the road, how am I gonna tell Camila and Dinah?          The pair arrived to the house, it was a deep blue color with white triming, and a big old tree sitting next to it dividing their property from their neighbors. Lauren- after fumbling with the keys- let the girl inside and brought her to her room. “just settle in kiddo, I’m gonna go and work a bit.”, Lauren exited the room and went to the stack of papers on the kitchen table that she had to grade. And the two stayed like that untill 2:26 rolled in. That’s when Dinah Jane Cabello-Jauregui and her girlfriend Normani Kordei walked in through the door. Lauren knew it was Dinah by the signature front door flying open and,“MAMA IM HOME, WHAT’S ON MY EATS”    The tall Polynesian walked into view followed by Normani. “Well hello to you too.” Lauren responded. The girl already had a piece of bread stuffed into her mouth and let out a muffled hello.     “Hey Mama J” Normani greeted, before helping herself into their fridge. Camila and Lauren adopted Dinah nearly 10 years ago immediately after they got married. She was a trouble child at times though, with her knack of theatrics and all around being loud but grew into a strong independent 16 year old. Normani and Dinah met a year earlier and it was your basic high school love story.         Lauren took a deep breath, not knowing why she was so nervous,“ So girls, we have a new housemate.” Dinah stopped mid bite, and looked at Lauren as if she was crazy.
     “Mama I know your paper grading has been effecting you, but I think this a whole knew level.”           “No Dinah-” Lauren let her head plop onto the paper stack, “we have a new girl living with us, and she’s gonna be for a bit.”
     “What? Who? Why? How? Where?” That’s all Dinah could respond with. Normani looked between the two and was wondering what exactly was going on too.
      “Gah, just wait till dinner, I’ll explain everything later” Lauren knew going over this know would be a disaster. So Dinah, shook with this new information just went upstairs with Normani. And everyone stayed like that till dinner. Avenue came out of the room that she was staying in and went downstairs to see Lauren in her element. Her hair was in a messy bun, some weird kiss the chef apron on, and some indie music that Ave had never heard of playing, cooking. Lauren turned around and saw Ave standing in the doorway to the kitchen. “Hey kid, dinners not gonna be ready for another 15 minutes.”
   “Okay, umm- do you need help?” Avenue asked rolling on the balls of her feet.
     “Yeah sure, thanks for asking, can you please set the table” Lauren flashed a smile. And Ave quickly set to work grabbing the plates and forks and glasses and putting them onto the table. The funny thing was there was way to many things out, 6 sets of everything. Now Ave may not be the best at math, but she knew for a fact she only counted two people, herself and Lauren. She didn’t ask questions. Asking questions was dangerous, Avenue knew that to be true.        Time rolled past as it always did, and soon enough Lauren was shouting at the bottom of the staircase ,“¡DINAH, NORMANI, HORA DE LA CENA!”
     The door opened next to Lauren and in walked in a tiny blonde girl. She was tan and sported a smile that could light up the darkest room. “Hey Mama J” The tiny 16 year old greeted Lauren and walked into the kitchen.
     White blood. As strange as that was that was the first thing that popped into Avenue’s mind after seeing this girl for the first time. The girl greeted Avenue with a cheery,“hello!” Avenue was gonna responded but she was cut off by a loud squeal, and saw a giant Polynesian running twords her with her arms open. Avenue stepped just to left of the girl and clenched her fists ready. The girl looked hurt but quickly recovered. “I’m Dinah! That’s Normani-” she pointed to an attractive woman to the left of her. Lauren came into the room and pushed the four girls gently into their seats and the front door opened.
    A small latina walked into the room wearing a police uniform. She looked to be around Lauren’s age. Friends maybe? Lauren got up and wrapped the girl into a hug, then a kis- Screams that’s all that occupied the room. Avenue was thrown off and onto the floor as he mounted her, throwing punches left and right. The mystery girl cocked an eyebrow at the new girl sitting at the table. Ave only froze when she felt the cold metal against her temple, the creak of the trigge- “who’s this?” The smaller girl asked.
     Lauren smiled and responded as smoothly as she could, which wasn’t all that smoothly to be honest, and answered, “this is Avenue. She’s gonna be staying with us for awhile.”
    The police officer offered a smile to the girl, who seemed to have a dazed expression on her face,“ hey mija, I’m Camil-”
    “You’re fags?”
     The sound of silver wear hitting a  plate was the only sound that was heard in that instant. “They prefer people, but yeah their gay.”, Normani finally broke the silence.
     Camila and Lauren sat down quickly and began eating. Lauren could tell both Camila and Dinah were fuming. Avenue seemed to be lost in her head, she looked.. relieved?
     “I’m sorry.”
     Camila looked up at the Avenue. Her face were unreadable and her knee seemed to be bouncing a mile a minute. “You’re okay.” And with that the table gradually evolved to chatter.
   After everyone was done Lauren sent Ally and Normani home, Dinah to get ready for bed, do homework, fun stuff like that, and Ave to do whatever. As soon as all the children were gone Camila turned to Lauren, “what was that?”        “What do you mean?”
      “Well why do we have a stray in our house. And what the fuck was that at dinner.”
       “Okay easy Camilk 2%, so I may have got a phone call this morning and agreed to foster this kid for a bit?”
       “LAUREN!”
       “Camila calm down, she needs this. I know what she said at dinner was a shock to me too, but I feel like there was a meaning behind it-”
       “Yeah she wants to disrespect me and my wif-”
     “She apologized and YOU said it was okay. You can’t make a big deal about it now, okay?”
    “Okay.”
    “ I love you.”
    “I love you too.”
     Avenue finished the poem finally. ‘Gravity’ has been teasing her for the past 4 montha, ever sinc-, don’t think about it. She finally finished. Avenue smiled and retrieved the ancient mp3 player and cheap headphones from her bag. She let the sounds of Drake fill her ears.
Hold on were going home.                 A/N: and chapter one has been completed. If you prefer Wattpad I got chu fam: allysuss
