jealousy | rutger mcgroarty
Tumblr media
summary: a rare spur of jealousy leads to misplaced anger against your boyfriend
warnings: slight angst, kissing, NOT proofread soz
a/n: he is doing so good in the tournament rn
word count: 1.3k
Being Rutgers girlfriend doesn’t demand much. He likes kisses, taking me on dates, and just simply being in each other's presence. However, being Rutgers girlfriend also means I double as a hockey girlfriend. This means attending all the games, being there so that he can vent about the games and being a motivational speaker. I truly didn’t mind it though. Getting to see him live out his dreams made it all worthwhile.
Tonight was another game, this one against Ohio State. Normally I attend the games alone and sit in a section separate from the student section. However my friends, after seeing a video from the UMich hockey account that showed Mark fighting another player, wanted to come and see a game. This also meant they wanted to sit in the student section so they could “be in the thick of it”.
We joined the sea of students, also dressed in blue and yellow. Some people around us had signs, most of them chirping the opposing team, Ohio State. When the boys skated out, the student section roared. People banged on the glass, pumping up the others while they did their warmups. The noise only slightly diminished as the game started, with chants starting every few seconds. By the end of the 2nd period, it was 2-0 for Michigan. The student section was slightly less rowdy, as people went to the concession stands.
“Okay, but number two was the best, right?”
The mention of my boyfriends' number made my ears perk up. I look at the three girls sitting in front of us who are the only possible owners of the voice.
“His last name was McGroarty, go look on Instagram.” One of the girls says.
I look at her phone, see her type in Rutger’s last name, and click on his profile. “He is so cute.” She squeals.
“I don’t see a girlfriend.” Another girl says.
With Rutger's newfound fame from being drafted by Winnipeg, to UMich and the World Juniors, we thought it best to keep our relationship just between close friends and family for the time being. It was good, for the most part, except when girls would assume he was single just because he had no posts about his girlfriend.
“You know, I heard they go to Milo’s frat’s parties a bunch.” One of the girls says. “You could try and find him at the party Friday?”
There’s a twinge in my chest and my ears heat up. Who are these girls to think that they can just get with my boyfriend?
I thankfully didn’t have to endure much of their conversation any longer as the boys skated out onto the ice to begin the third period. They finished the game, winning 3-1 with Rutger securing the win with an empty netter.
We get up, walking out of the stands to where Rutger and the rest of the team will exit the building from. We’re about halfway there when I realize the girls from earlier are walking to the exact same place. The twinge from earlier returns and a wave of heat takes over my body. My friends and I stop a few feet away from the girls, who continue to talk about Rutger, adding in a few comments about Ethan and Mark.
The door opens, a few of the guys spilling out. You spot Rutger walking out beside Dylan. Before you can even get to him, the girls from earlier are by his side. They ask him about the game, telling him how well he played.
“Are you coming to the party on Friday? Beta Theta Phi?” One of the girls asks.
“Um, not sure. Maybe?” He tells them.
“Well, I’ll be looking for you.” She smiles, walking off with her friends.
I expect the twinge to dissipate as the girls leave, but it stays. Rutger joins my side, tossing an arm around my shoulders. “Hey girls, did you enjoy the game?” He asks my friends.
“Yes, are you kidding? We saw two guys start swinging at one another then proceeded to fall on their asses. There’s nothing better than that.” Melanie tells him.
“You ready to go?” He asks me. I nod in response, saying goodbye to my friends.
Johnny joins us, walking back to their shared dorm together. I’m noticeably quiet on the short walk home, letting Rutger and Johnny talk about their game while I try to navigate what I was feeling. I felt as if I was mad at Rutger, but couldn’t figure out why.
We get in their dorm, both boys flopping down on their respective. “I’m absolutely wiped.” Johnny sighs, pulling out his phone.
Rutger has his arms open, waiting for me to climb in as I normally do. When Rutger notices my hesitation, he props himself up on his elbows and looks at me with a confused look on his face.
“I think I’m probably going to sleep at mine tonight.” I tell him, stepping towards the door.
“Woah, woah. Why?” He asks, climbing out of bed and walking towards me.
“I just feel like being in my own bed tonight.” I lie straight through my teeth.
“I know you’re lying, y/n.” He says. “You always stay over after a game, plus you love to stay the night because you get to wake up in my arms.”
“Well… I just want to sleep at my place tonight.” I tell him.
Rutger's expression turns from one of confusion to one of hurt. “Babe, talk to me. What’s up?”
I glance behind Rutger's shoulder, seeing Johnny looking at us rather than at his phone. Realizing that he probably should let us talk alone, he scrambles out of his bed.
“Yeah, I’ll just… go to Luke’s or something. Maybe I’ll have a sleepover with Fants.” Johnny chuckles, pulling on some shoes quickly. He slips out the door leaving us alone.
“Can you tell me what’s up now?” Rutger asks me.
I sigh, sitting down on his desk chair. I open my mouth to speak but putting my thoughts into words seems impossible.
“I was sitting in the student section and these girls in front of me were talking about you, calling you cute and stuff, and saying how easy it would be to get with you.” I explain. “Then they came to talk to you after the game and I hated it! I don’t know why but I absolutely despised hearing them talk about you.”
I finish ranting, turning in his chair to look at him, only to see a smirk on his lips. “No way…” He says. “You’re actually jealous.”
“What? I’m not jealous.” I say, crossing my arms on my chest.
“Oh yeah, you are. You’re talking about how much other girls crushing on me is bothering you. Plus you’ve got this brooding look and your eyebrows are furrowed and you’re kind of pouting…wait.” He says, stepping towards me. “Are you trying to turn me on right now? Cause it’s working.”
“Rutger I’m serious.” I say, wiping the grin off his face.
“Sorry, sorry. But you have nothing to be jealous of. I’m all yours and no one else's.” He tells me, coming over and grabbing my hand. He pulls me up from the chair, placing his hands on my waist. “Other people are going to find me attractive and that’s something that’s gonna happen. I mean guys look at you all the time.”
“Other guys don’t look at me.” I say.
“Yeah they do, I’m pretty sure Luca had a thing for you for the first few months we were dating.” Rutger tells me, making me laugh. “Don’t tell him I told you though.”
“We’re always going to find each other being jealous of people that are attracted to the other and that’s just something we have to deal with.” He tells me. “But as long as we both know we’re committed to each other, there’s nothing to worry about.”
I give him a soft smile at his words. I lay a hand on his cheek, bringing him down to me. I softly kiss him, hoping the gesture works as a way to tell him thank you for easing my worries.
“You know,” Rutger starts as we separate. “Johnny’s sleeping… not here tonight, so we have the place to ourselves.” I laugh as he pulls me over to the bed.

reader taking the boys out to go country line dancing for rutger’s 19th birthday??
Tumblr media
“save a horse ride a…”
rutger mcgroarty x f!reader
wc: 0.9k
warning: implied sexual activities
your boyfriend rutger was born in nebraska, so, to a certain extent, he has some country roots to him. one thing you’ve learned over the last 5 1/2 months is that he has a love for country line dancing. “okay ethan, you’re gonna tell him that you and the boys planned him a birthday surprise, and have him be blindfolded when you start getting closer to the place, okay? and then when he takes it off we’re all gonna yell surprise alright? don’t screw this up eddy, it’s simple,” you say through the phone on the way to pick up rutgers birthday cake.
“thanks for thinking i’m that dimwitted that i cant even follow a basic instruction,” ethan chuckles.
“what time are you picking him up? i know the rest of the guys are coming to the place in about 45 minutes, so maybe get him in about an hour?” you say, arriving at the cake shop in the midst of ann arbor.
“yup got it! thanks for planning all of this y/n, he’s gonna love it,” ethan reassures, knowing that you’re a little nervous about the whole thing.
“thanks eddy, i really hope he likes it. it took me forever to find a place, but thankfully i did and was able to rent it out. oh, and when we were visiting his parents a few weeks ago i swiped his cowboy hat, so i have that with me too! i’m really excited! all those times rutger tried to teach me how to line dance are gonna come in handy tonight. anyways i gotta get the cake, but text me updates okay?” you exclaim.
“yup alright, see ya soon y/n!” ethan says before ending the call. you then walk inside the shop and pick up rutgers birthday cake. currently you’re dressed in navy bootcut jeans and a tight white shirt, so of course you get a few confused looks as to why you’re dressed so differently than most college students. you ignore the looks, and after getting the cake you immediately make your way to the place that you rented out for tonight.
after setting up everything you need, the boys begin to start filing in, wearing the closest things they have to line dancing/country attire. surprisingly, for most of them it actually wasn’t impossible for them to find correct attire. eventually it’s time for ethan to be arriving with rutger, and he told you he just put the blindfold on him. ethan parks his car, and carefully guides rutger into the now silent building. “yo dude where are we? why is it like dead silent in here?” rutger chuckles. ethan then takes the bandana off of rutgers eyes, and you and the boys immediately shout ‘surprise!’
a huge smile forms across his cheeks, seeing all of his friends and girlfriend get together just specifically for him. you walk over to him and place his cowboy hat on his head, stepping on your tip-toes to place a peck on his lips. “happy birthday babe, i love you!” you say.
“thank you love! where did you get my cowboy hat? did you take this from my parents house?” he chuckles as he wraps an arm around you, taking in the fact that all of his friends are in country-like attire. “maybeee,” you say dragging out the e, “cmon we’re all going country line dancing since i know you love it! show off your moves babe!” you exclaim as you run over to the building worker, giving him your phone to use as aux. as you run back over to the birthday boy, ‘bow chicka wow wow’ by meghan patrick starts playing and you immediately start dancing with rutger, the other boys following in pursuit.
a solid forty-five minutes go by of just pure laughter and messy dance moves, and you all decide to take a little break to eat cake.
you’re all sat at a table towards the far end of the room, and you and rutger are sat next to each other. he then places a gentle kiss on your temple, “thank you for planning this, y/n. it’s the best birthday gift. and, i never knew you actually paid attention when i taught you line dancing!” he chuckles, making you smile.
“well, what can i say? when i have you as my teacher i’ll take any excuse just to watch you. even if you’re teaching me how to like dance,” you joke, making rutger scrunch up his nose.
“you’re so cringe, i love it,” he says before taking his hat off of his head and placing it on top of yours. you readjust it slightly and laugh at how ridiculous you must look. you pull out your snapchat camera to look at yourself, and that’s when an idea comes to mind. “you know what they say rut… save a horse ride a…” you begin to say, but suddenly you’re interrupted by mark. “ew y/n shut up! did you guys not realize that we’ve been sitting here silently waiting for you two to finish so we can keep dancing?” he blinks, making your cheeks go hot.
“y/n we’ll save that for later,” rutger winks at you jokingly, making all of the other guys groan and fake gag. “remind me why we decided to come again?” duker speaks up.“because you all love me,” rutger cheekily grins, making all the duker flip him off.
“whatever man, let’s just keep dancing. i think i’m getting pretty good at this,” duker says. “yeah, you keep telling yourself that man,” nolan says as he pats dylan’s shoulder.

Now I Can See You - Rutger McGroarty
summary : when did things get so complicated ? They always get complicated when you overthink. Maybe if you acted more with your heart and less with your head you wouldn’t be locked up in a room with Rutger.
pairing : rutger mcgroarty x junior! reader
TW: implications of sex, insecurities (idk if it’s really a tw but better to be safe than sorry)
a/n : you just KNOW i had to use a Taylor song name for the tittle. i wrote this one a few weeks/ months ago and @sillinger said i should post it so here it is. idk what i did here and honestly i’m not good with criticism so if u don’t like pls just ignore it <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You and Jacob met in Algebra first semester of freshman year. Your friendship was strategic on both parts. You wanted to cut ties with your shy high school persona and become a free spirit college student who knows how to have fun. He needed to pass that Algebra class. It was a win-win relationship : you passed him your notes and explained to him what he didn’t understand and he invited you to hockey or frat parties. Getting along also kinda helped.
Therefore, for the next few years, you became inseparable at parties. Beer pong partners, couch interlocutors, he would always have his arm swung around your shoulder. And if the sibling energy wasn’t so prominent your friends would have assumed you were a couple. But you always had each other’s backs and nothing even remotely ambiguous ever happened.
When in junior year, Jacob introduced you to the freshmen.
You thought Rutger was cute the moment you laid eyes on him.
You got to know later that the first impression was mutual because he would flirt with you any chance he got.
But he flirted with anybody anyway. He was quite popular with the ladies, you noticed after the few first parties.
Therefore you never took his comments seriously. You were looking for a serious relationship. He was probably looking for a new conquest to add to his list.
It wasn’t something you were interested in.
Until that fateful night. You needed to take the edge of that night. You’ve had a stressful week before, filled with presentations and assignments to turn in. So, you - just- needed to relax. You’ve had a few of whatever Nolan concocted you. Rutger complimented your dress when you where sitting on the stairs together. Everything happened fast that damned night.
After that it didn’t take long for the dress to find itself on the floor, and what needed to happen happened.
~~
In that moment you hated Jacob more than anything. Why did he have to go and meddle. You realise you should have never told him about Rutger.
At least you had the decency to not tell him how much you actually liked the freshman. You would have never heard the end of it.
But now you’re stuck in this room with him and you know that whatever Jacob is doing right now he’s not letting you out of the room before you and Rutger talk.
Yet he doesn’t seem like he has much to say, so you keep your mouth shut as well. You want to know what he’s thinking. You want to apologise for running away in the morning, for leaving him with a cold bed, for ignoring him afterwards.
But you know it’s useless. He doesn’t care. He probably slept with at least another girl since then. What was it a week, ten days, since?
You’re the one who would have wanted to wake up in the stupidly warm arms, pressed to his stupidly toned chest. He was probably relieved when he didn’t have to kick you out in the morning.
But the silence is awkward so small talk it is, you decide.
Yet the moment you start talking to ask how he’s doing, he interrupts you.
“Why’d you leave in the morning?” he sounds disappointed.
Wait. Does he?
You don’t know what to say so you just say what you truly thought since the beginning, “I didn’t want to wait for you to kick me out.”
He widens his eyes at you. Really it’s comical the way his mouth hangs open for a second before he asks “Is it really what you think of me? That I would have kicked YOU out in the morning?” He insists on the word you and you don’t know what to think of it.
You’re left speechless. What can you answer to that anyway except for yes. He looks so offended already, that wouldn’t help.
“I know I’m just a freshman hockey player. But i thought.. with you being friends with Truss and all… maybe you’d have a better image of me… I thought… i thought i finally got you to look my way…”
Now it was your turn to look at him with wide eyes as you only manage to say one thing. “What?”
“It’s okay I understand it was a mistake for you. I’m younger and you probably don’t have the time to deal with me but can we please remain…”
What? No, no, no. After the word mistake not much makes sense to you. You don’t hear him anymore. Where did he get that idea?
“Wait. What? No, no, no. It was not a mistake for me not at all. I just… I thought you wanted me gone after you got what you wanted… I… I thought you’d get bored of me and kick me out and start ignoring me after we slept together…”
You’re ashamed to admit how insecure you are.
“Is you esteem of me really that low?” Rutger’s question really surprises you. And is it pain you hear filling his voice?
“I genuinely like you, did since the beginning. And i couldn’t get you to see me. You always acted like i was a kid and I almost lost hope honestly. But I wanted you - I want you - so I kept try to flirt with you. The moment you followed me into that room, I’ve never been more happy, and when you started kissing me back I swear I’ve felt more awake than ever. I just had to remember everything about you, about your body. I asked you what seemed like a thousands times to me if you were sure of what you wanted and you just kept shutting me up with new kisses until I gave in.”
The images he was depicted, you knew them all too well. You had replayed the night in your head too many times to count. It still gave you goosebumps.
“I’m so sorry” You knew he wasn’t done but you had to say it out loud. Still, you didn’t know if it was enough. You had hurt him in order to protect your own feelings, you could see that now.
“I am so so sorry Rutger. I never thought of you as a kid… Really. Never. I’ve noticed you since we met…”
Jacob’s room wasn’t so big but in this moment, as you took small steps towards Rutger, it seems miles long. You didn’t know what to say anymore. You wanted to tell him just how much you like him and how much you want him but the words won’t get out. Being vulnerable has always been difficult for you and you’re so used to doing everything to protect your feelings.
But this is not on him and you know it. He told you everything he had to say. He said he liked you, he said he wanted you. Yet you still can’t believe him. Damn those insecurities.
“More than anything I’m sorry for being insecure. I was convinced you would get bored of me so I shut you out from the beginning. It wasn’t fair to you”
How can you tell him you like him too? And now he’s so close, he is all around you, and all you want to do is kiss him again.
“Do you really mean what you said earlier?” It may sound pathetic. It probably does but you have to be sure.
He doesn’t say anything for a while, just stares at you. Then he leans in and it’s enough of an answer.

☆ for a girl who grew up in a hockey obsessed house Aspen can’t even skate as she was always more found being sat on the bleachers with her book.
luca and aspen getting into a screaming match the weekend of the family skate (have no idea of this fits with their timeline) and so she goes out onto the ice, knowing full well she can’t skate. she gets maybe three feet before she falls, and maybe luca catches her, maybe he doesn’t.
either way she retains some sort of injury (severity may vary) and luca feels like shit, but doesn’t know why- until he takes a step back and is like “oh i kinda like her… and i kinda don’t want her injured, ever”
to fit this into their storyline I changed some parts!
It was after practice one day when Luca had been bugging Aspen in her office until she finally joined him out by the ice “you’re meant to come onto the ice Hughesy.” His words made her roll her eyes “I’m not going skating with you Fantilli.” Aspen shook her head.
The same interaction happened for the next week before Luca walked into her office and placed the skates on her table “aren’t you meant to be getting ready for practice?” Aspen furrowed her eyebrows “that’s starting late because we have a competition to settle.” Luca got her up before she could do as much as complain when he helped her walk back to the rink where a few other students were as they attempted to stake.
It filled Aspen with a weird sense of fear but as she had Luca in her ear asking what could go wrong she had to agree “you go on now and I’ll catch up.” Luca offered taking the guards off of his skates before he began talking to Rutger “dude she really doesn’t look that sure.” The blonde pointed out with an uncomfortable look on his face “she will be fine.” Luca’s time truly couldn’t have been that more impeccable.
As he said that you lost your footing and landed up straight on your ankle as you hit the ice “shit!” Luca groaned quickly going over to help her up “Lu-” her voice was soft as her lips formed a frown looking down to her throbbing ankle “you’re okay.” He cooed trying to comfort her “doesn’t feel like it.” She pointed out with a grumble as he helped her off.
What honestly made it worse was how swollen her leg was and it meant that she had to go to the ER. That meant Luca had to tell Luke “Aspen is in the ER.” Luca felt horrible that he had pushed her to doing it “is she okay?” Luke put the volume up on the FaceTime call so that Jack could hear it too.
Luca wanted to crawl into a hole a he watched her sleep whilst they waited for someone to come and see them “I might have made her skate-”
“She can’t skate Fantilli!”

Down the road| AF19
Requested: yes
Summary: I’m too lazy
Warnings: basically none except maybe a few swear words.
_______________________________
Living down the road from the girl he had the biggest crush on was the only problem Adam had.
He was amazing at hockey, had A’s in every class, and was the model student, which made Caroline living down the road the only problem.
Adam and Luca had been living with the Armstrongs and their two daughters while they played hockey for the Chicago steel team.
Caroline didn’t like hockey, Adam, lacrosse, traveling, or anything that Adam liked so it was strange that he liked her.
Of course Luca picked on his younger brother about the girl, but at the same time he also was Adam’s wing man.
It was the 4th of July and the Armstrongs took it VERY seriously, “Adam! Get down here and help set the table.” Mrs. Armstrong yelled from the living room as she had just walked back inside from hanging the decorations.
“Who’s all gonna be there anyway?” Adam asked as he grabbed the Fourth of July themed napkins off the island.
“Just Caroline and her family, the Johnson’s-” she had fully lost Adam’s attention after she said Caroline was going to be there.
“Why’s Caroline coming??” Adam asked defensively, of course he didn’t mean it in a rude way but it came across as rude.
“Because her family is very sweet!” Mrs.Armstrong huffed and walked back outside.
“You gotta get over this little crush Mo.” Alyssa, the oldest of the two Armstrong girls stated.
“Shut it Alyssa. No one says anything about your crush on that Rutger McGroarty kid.” Adam said as he stormed up to his room.
He knew he was going to have to look good in order to get Caroline’s attention, whether that mean getting electrocuted or putting on a bright red shirt he was gonna do whatever it took.
The clock turned 6 and Adam knew it was time for the party to start, Adam was more nervous than ever.
He had never been in the same backyard as Caroline, he hadn’t even talked to this girl!
The more Adam thought about it the more nervous he got.
Adam sat at a small table with a umbrella on top cover the very little sun they had left.
He watched Caroline and Luca talk, Adam thought Luca was talking about him to the girl but he was completely wrong.
With in 10 seconds Adam’s whole world can crashing down.
He stared in shock as Luca connected his lips to Caroline’s.
He wanted to throw up…..

hes so cutie patootie…anyway!!
adam and luca fantilli, maybelle’s older brothers. they played for the hockey team at umich so obviously they were invited to a lot of parties. and of course the whole hockey team was always there. they always dragged her to all the parties. always. this night was no different. someone planned a party in the student lounge so naturally her brothers were there and she was dragged along. she got herself a drink and then went to find her brothers when she accidentally bumped into someone.
she looked up, seeing rutger looking down at her in annoyance. “seriously maybelle? watch where you’re walking”, he rolled his eyes. she looked at her drink splattered across his shirt and sighed. “sorry rut”, she smiled softly. “here ill help you clean up, cmon”, she grabbed his hand in hers, pulling him toward the bathroom. she stood outside, waiting for a moment. that was until she heard moans and rolled her eyes. she banged on the door before yelling in. “get out you fucking whore. you’ve been in there with at least twenty different guys, jessi”, may groaned. rustling was heard from the other side of the door (taylor swift who) and after 2 minutes jessi opened the door. “i was busy, slut.” may smiled at that, tilting her head. “you’ve been with maybe 6 guys since the party started 2 hours ago. but i’m the slut? go suck him off somewhere else people actually need to use the bathroom “, may rolled her eyes. “someone jealous they aren’t getting any action?”, jessi smirked. “someone hooking up with any man who even looks at her for a millisecond? every guy i’ve seen you with gets worse and worse. go fucking get an std or something”, may pushes jessi out of the way, pulling rutger into the bathroom. “whatever”, jessi mumbled, walking away with whatever guy she was with now. the guy looked may up and down, licking his lips and winking before leaving. may rolled her eyes in disgust as she grabbed some paper towels to help clean rutger’s shirt.
“you hate her huh?”, he smiled. “hate is not even the word”, may mumbled, patting his shirt dry with the paper towels. he smiled down at her. his eyes trailed across her hips, her tits, her face, her ass. he looked at the way her red dress hugged her figure, leaving little to nothing to imagination. all he could think about was how cute she looked. helping him like this. the way her tongue stuck out ever so slightly between her lips as it did everytime she was focusing. she was so gorgeous. she continues wiping his shirt until she thought it was dry enough. she touched it gently with her fingers and nodded to herself. “good as new, sweetheart”, she smiled up at him, throwing the paper towels out. “thanks may”, he smiled, cheeks flushing pink. sweetheart? she grinned up at him, reaching up to brush back his hair. her fingers grazed his forehead. she scrunches up her nose, pressing her hand against his forehead. “you feel warm… did you drink a lot?”, she asked softly, looking up at him. but he felt like he was in a trance. his eyes locked on her pretty face. her soft lips. her cute little freckled nose. she was so gorgeous. so cute.
“rut? did you hear me?”, she asked softly again. “huh? what?”, he shook his head, snapping out of it. she smiled in amusement. “did you drink a lot? you feel warm”, she asked again. “uh not too too much. im just a bit tipsy”, he smiled at her. “well you feel like you have a fever mr tipsy. do you wanna go back to your dorm?”, she brushed her thumb across his cheek. “i uh…yea that sounds good”, he nodded, looking down at her hips again. god she was so hot. she nodded, pulling him out of the bathroom. “ill text luca and tell him we’re going to your dorm just so he knows”, she smiles, pulling out her phone. once she’s done, she leads him out of the student lounge and down the hallway toward the elevator. she groaned when she saw a bunch of drunk people. either making out or on the verge of throwing up. she rolled her eyes as the elevator came and everyone piled on. they all squeezed into the elevator together, squished completely. the doors shut and may sighed, leaning forward to press floor number 3, considering anyone else in the elevator was either too busy sticking their tongues down each others throats or holding in puke. her ass grazed against rutger, making her eyes widen. his did too as he felt himself get hard. fuck. the doors finally opened and may grabbed his hand again, pushing through the drunk people on the elevator. she then led him to his dorm, waiting for him to pull out his key. when she realized how out of it he was she sighed, reaching into his pocket to get his key. he stood, awestruck as she unlocked the door. he went in, watching her follow. “go get changed and ill get you a compress, yea?”, she said but he was too lost in his own thoughts to hear.
she went into the bathroom, grabbing a hand towel and wetting it with cold water. she left the bathroom, sighing as she saw him standing there, completely clueless. she put the compress down onto the table and pointed to his bed. “sit. i’ll help you get undressed.” “oh yea sorry…”, he sat down, looking up at her expectantly. “arms up, rut”, she smiled. he obeyed, lifting his arms over his head. she pulled his shirt over his head, looking down at his abs with a smile. she thought about how bad she wanted to lick them. then she thought about how weird she was being and mentally cursed herself. she leaned down, pulling at his shorts zipper. her ass stuck out as she bent down a bit to reach it. he smiled, looking at her ass as she tugged his zipper down. she tapped his thigh. “lift your hips”, she instructed. again he obeyed. like a trained dog would. she tugged his shorts down, looking at the bulge in his boxers with cheeks almost as red as her dress. she squeezed her thighs together, trying to get rid of the feeling she had. she was soaked, she could tell. he was too oblivious to even notice how she reacted.“ok now lay down and ill get your compress ok?” he nodded, smiling as he crawled up to lay on his pillows, pulling the covers over his body.
he watched as she walked to the table to get his compress. he admired the way her hips swayed. she came back, laying the compress over his head. “that better?”, she smiled softly, thumb rubbing over his cheek. “yes…thank you maybaby”, he smirked. she grinned down at him. that was her favorite nickname that he had for her. maybaby… “you need anything else, sweetheart?”, she asked him. her tone was so caring and sweet it made him melt. all he thought about was screaming “you!” at the top of his lungs. he needed her. so bad. “nope”, he replied. she nodded, humming a bit until an idea popped into her head.
“hey can you unzip my dress?”, she asked softly, picking her long brown hair up to give him access to her zipper. he was confused but he didn’t ask questions. “uh sure…” he unzipped it slowly, smiling up at her. “thanks darling”, she bit her bottom lip. here goes nothing. she tugged her dress off, leaving her in nothing but her bra and panties. he looked at her in awe, admiring her body.
“how about i help you relax?”, she smiled, crawling onto the bed. she pulled the covers off of him, leaning down to lick across his abs. intrusive thoughts…she could hear him groan softly as he got sight of her ass. he wanted nothing more than to reach out and touch it. she looked up at him, smiling and wiggling her ass in the air. “go on baby, touch me”, she whispered. he smirked, grabbing her ass with his hands and squeezing it. she whines, closing her eyes as she leaned against his stomach. she then crawled up and moved herself to sit on his abs. “kiss me. please rut”, she whined.
he grinned, pulling her hair into a makeshift ponytail and tugging her down to him. he hungrily kissed her, making her moan into his mouth. they made out for a few minutes as she grinded against his abs. “can i please suck your dick?”, she asked him, pulling away from his lips as she reached her hand back to hold his cock in her hands. “oh please do, baby”, he groaned as she bit her bottom lip, moving to position herself between his legs. she smiled, tugging his boxers down. her eyes widened as his dick slapped against his stomach. she slowly licked the tip, pumping him in her hands before she wrapped her lips around him. he groaned at the sight, watching her plump lips take him in her mouth. he held her hair in a ponytail again, pushing her down on his cock. “good girl”, he moaned, tugging her hair slightly, making her whine on his dick. “such a good girl for me. my sweet angel. what would your brothers think?”, he smirked as she choked on him. “you’re so big”, she whined, pumping his dick some more. she bit her bottom lip as she looked up at him. her big brown eyes looked so innocent. it contradicted what she was doing to him. such a sweet innocent looking girl could do wonders with her pretty little mouth.
“please let me ride you”, she moaned, looking up at him pleadingly. how could he say no to such a sweet little face? “of course angel”, he smiled. she pushed her panties to the side, crawling up his body so she hovered over his dick. she rubbed the tip between her folds, looking at him. her teeth sunk into the flesh of her plump bottom lip as she slowly sunk onto his cock. she moaned loudly, throwing her head back as she squeezed her eyes shut. she allowed herself to adjust to his size before she slowly started bouncing on his cock. she undid her bra, throwing it onto the floor. he groaned at the sight, his hands moving to her hips to guide them. “oh yea princess just like that. making me feel so good”, he groaned, hand reaching for her tit. he watched as they bounced above him. she whined, fucking herself on his dick. “oh you’re so big, rut”, she cried out, nose scrunched up in pleasure. he wrapped his arms around her back, pulling her down. he leaned up a bit and began to suck on her tit, making her whine even louder. “such a good boy”, she moaned, tugging at his hair as she bounced even harder on his dick.
“you’re a good girl, maybaby. look at you, so pretty riding my dick. such a pretty girl”, he smiled, squeezing her ass as he sucked on her tit. he thrust up into her, feeling the way she squeezed his cock. “ ‘m so close, rut. so so close.” “i feel it. doing so good for me my pretty girl. i love you, princess.” may smiled down at him, pressing her lips up against him as she felt him buck up into her. “i love you, rut”, she whispered. she shut her eyes tight as she felt her release. “oh god im gonna cum”, she cried. “go on baby. cum for me. ‘m right behind you”, he smiled. he squeezed her tit as he rode them through their high.
she collapsed onto him, closing her eyes. he smiled, running his fingers through her hair. “you did such a good job, my love. please be my girlfriend?”, he whispered. “of course i will rutger. can’t let any other girls have your dick”, she jokes, kissing his jaw lazily. he chuckled, kissing her head. “better clean ourselves up before luca gets back…” “shit.”
well that was my first time writing a smut. hope it didn’t suck!

Which knowledge and skills do today’s students need to get hired in tomorrow’s job market - the market of 2030? Which is precisely the wrong question. In 2030, there will likely be a high demand for savvy accountants untroubled by a conscience. If current trends hold, countries like Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Switzerland will become even bigger tax havens, enabling multinationals to dodge taxes even more effectively, leaving developing countries with an even shorter end of the stick. If the aim of education is to roll with these kinds of trends rather than upend them, then egotism is set to be the quintessential 21st-century skill. Not because the law or the market or technology demand it, but solely because that, apparently, is how we prefer to earn our money. Instead, we should be posing a different question altogether: Which knowledge and skills do we want our children to have in 2030? Then, instead of anticipating and adapting, we’d be focusing on steering and creating. Instead of wondering what we need to do to make a living in this or that bullshit job, we could ponder how we want to make a living. This is a question no trend watcher can answer. How could they? They only follow the trends, they don’t make them. That part is up to us. To answer this question, we’ll need to examine ourselves and our personal ideals. What do we want? More time for friends, for example, or family? For volunteer work? Art? Sports? Future education would have to prepare us not only for the job market but, more fundamentally, for life. Do we want to rein in the financial sector? Then maybe we should give budding economists some instruction in philosophy and morals. Do we want more solidarity across race, sex, and socioeconomic groups? Start in social studies class. If we restructure education around our new ideals, the job market will happily tag along.

Authors note: let’s try this a second time because tumblr has decided to take a shit and fuck my formatting up 🙄. Thank you so much to @antoineroussel for organising the fic exchange I’ve had so much fun writing this story and I hope you enjoy it. I was matched with @torontoflames and I hope I’ve created a little story that you enjoy!

Jack watched as Quinn scowled at his phone once again, clearly receiving another negative response from his friends about coming to the lake house over summer. Luke had invited his friends over from Michigan and Jack already had some friends over from when he was in the US National Team Development Program. Jack knew that Josh Norris was coming for a week slightly later in the summer but that was it.
“Probably not gonna make you feel much better, but I’ve got a friend coming over next week who’s your age,” Jack explained.
“Jack,” Quinn groaned, “you think inviting one of your hookups from Jersey is gonna make me feel any better?” It was as if Jack wasn’t even thinking about how his brother would understand his comment. From Quinn’s perspective, the only person he knew at the lake house was Nick Blankenburg from their time at Michigan together but it felt like he was imposing on Luke’s group of friends.
“Woah woah,” Jack started to recoil back, “Y/N is not a hookup. She went out on a few sort of dates with Nico because she’s friends with Ty’s girlfriend but nothing ever came of it and she just stuck around and joined our friendship group. She’s sound, an engineering student at Rutgers, but can’t go home as she’s international so I invited her here for a week, maybe longer if she wants to.”
Quinn showed the slightest hint of a smile, thinking that maybe he might not be the only one who barely knows anyone. “Okay,” he conceded, well, conceded might not be the right word. He was excited to have someone his own age hanging around not just Michigan freshman.
A few days had passed, and aside from having a few beers on a boat, wakeboarding, and going to the gym, Quinn really didn’t do much. Yes, he enjoyed cooking dinner for everyone on the barbecue and occasionally baking with his mother. But he felt isolated, that was until Jack announced to everyone that he was going to the airport to pick Y/N up.
All of Jack’s friends started whooping and Quinn could specifically hear Cole asking if she was Jack’s girlfriend, which he denied once again. “Just a friend who would be alone all summer if she didn’t come here.”
Just a friend. Those words rung around in Quinn’s head. He really hoped that his brother and Y/N really hadn’t done anything together because he had gone and found her Instagram profile and although it was on private, he sent a request. Within a few hours the words requested turned into following and he had gained himself a new follower too.
The feed contained photos of her studying, one at a Devils game where she was hanging out with some of the girlfriends and another from a night out with some of Jack’s teammates. The pair of them may not have been dating but they certainly were good friends.
Quinn couldn’t help but look at her Instagram feed and think that she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Beautiful and smart was a winning combination in his eyes. All could hope was that she was funny to, or at least funny to him.
He had completely zoned out thinking about her, thinking what she could be like. It wasn’t until he heard the sound of keys jingling and Jack shouting that he was home, he came back to reality. Alex and Cole seemed to be sprinting back into the family room, dripping with chlorinated water from the pool. Nick was following closely behind, trying to get them to at least wrap a towel around themselves so they didn’t stain the carpets of the house.
“Boys, Y/N,” Jack introduced her. “Y/N, the boys.”
“Can’t wait for me to be the only girl once again,” she spoke whilst rolling her eyes. Y/N was used to hanging around with just guys, she thought it was just easier to hang around with them. Yes, she hung around with the WAGs occasionally and was also the go to person for events. It started with Nico after their failed tinder dates, then when the captain started dating Abbie, she was Jack’s go to.
Y/N had become like an older sister to Jack, helping him to cook and do basic house tasks which he struggled with. But he was always there when she needed him, like after her boyfriend had cheated on her, Jack was there as a friend with a pint of ice cream in the freezer and her favourite wine on the wine rack.
Jack did have the feeling that Sebastian was up to something behind Y/N’s back, however he didn’t feel it was his place to mention anything. She thought that something wasn’t right when Sebastian kept cancelling their lunch plans and found out when she turned up at his place with a bottle of wine, hoping for a cute evening date but ended up being greeted by an absolutely stunning, model-esque looking woman asking if she had turned up to the wrong house with a food delivery order. It took all of Y/N’s strength to not shout at the woman, knowing that she was unlikely to know that Sebastian was seeing another woman. All Y/N did was introduce herself as Sebastian’s girlfriend to which the other woman was confused. They were both of the impression that Sebastian was dating them, and only them. The pair of them then confronted him and Y/N invited Abbie back to her flat to share wine and rant about shitty men. Y/N and Abbie then became friends and to celebrate their singleness, Jack organised a night out for both of them, cementing Abbie into the group.
“Y/N!” Luke shouted, after running down the stairs to figure out what the commotion in the living room was.
“Baby Hughes!” Y/N replied, taking the younger boy into a playful headlock. Quinn watched as his youngest brother almost melted into the grasp of the woman. “If Jack had told me someone who can cook would be here, I would have been out weeks earlier.”
“Hey,” Alex looked shocked, “I can use the barbecue.” Y/N rolled her eyes, not trusting the words coming out of his mouth.
“Better than Jack, he struggles with everything,” Y/N joked before releasing Luke from the headlock and messing up Jack’s hair.
“And on that note, your room is upstairs,” Jack spoke before pretty much dragging Y/N up to the top floor where her room was allocated.
Quinn was fucked.
~~
Being the oldest there, Quinn was trusted by his mother to drive the boat out onto Lake Huron and he had to make sure that the boat was docked when he got back. Ellen Hughes didn’t spend too much time at the lake house when it was packed with young adults but she did make sure that everyone felt welcome. Quinn tried to extend his mother’s hospitality by offering to take Y/N to the store and to grab whatever alcohol and food she wanted. Her list wasn’t extensive but she offered to tag along with Quinn and help pick up the ever extending list made by Luke’s friends. The pair engaged in friendly conversation throughout the drive and in Target but it was limited to questions about their time at college and how difficult Jack can be at times. If Quinn was feeling awkward, Y/N didn’t notice it as she grew fonder of his presence, even if it was barely an hour they had spent together.
The pair stocked the fridge on the boat up with beers, White Claws and soft drinks before seamlessly moving on to preparing some food to eat on the boat too. Y/N chopped fruit up and made it look pretty before wrapping it in plastic wrap and setting it on the portable cooler and Quinn moved to prepare some pita bread, vegetable sticks and hummus. It was the first sense of calm that either of them had felt since arriving at the lake house.
Until Jack came tumbling down the stairs claiming that the girl he had been talking to back in Jersey was going to be coming out to the lake house for a few days. Y/N rolled her eyes, now it wasn’t that her and Faith didn’t get along. Faith seemed to be jumping from one famous person’s bed to another and that lifestyle wasn’t one that Y/N could see herself living. But she did her best to get along with Faith when she was around.
“There’s a girl?” Quinn questioned his younger brother, realising that there were more things that Jack was keeping hidden from him.
Y/N hummed in answer to Quinn’s question, whilst rolling her eyes giving the Canuck player all the information he needed about this girl.
“She’s getting here in a week,” he gasped, rereading the texts. Jack’s golden retriever behaviour didn’t just stop there as he almost sprinted over to his older brother to show him Faith’s Instagram profile. Quinn took Jack’s phone off him and scrolled through her account. It was bikini picture after bikini picture, with a few lingerie shoots dotted around. He noticed that, compared to Y/N’s account at least, Faith didn’t seem to show much personality. Y/N had her at brunches, in the electronics labs and at hockey games, Faith’s had none of that.
“She looks lovely,” Quinn managed to get out before shooing his brother off to get everyone else up for the day out on the lake.
The water was calm as Quinn drove the boat out onto the lake. The stillness calmed him as he concentrated on taking everyone to the small island in the centre of the lake safety. Quinn watched the branches of the trees on the shoreline move with the gentle winds and the waves crashed softly on the sandy beach, slowly bringing him to a state of relaxation he hadn’t felt in some time.
Quinn was brought out of his calm state by his youngest brother shouting the unfortunate nickname given to him by his teammates. He rolled his eyes before turning around to see what the commotion was.
“Alex wanted to know where the White Claws were,” Jack told him.
“And you had to ask me, whilst I’m driving the boat?” Quinn replied, annoyed with the middle Hughes brother.
“Well you packed the boat full of stuff,” Jack said nonchalantly, “why would anyone else know where the stuff is.” Jack shrugged his shoulders, stocking the boat up with alcohol generally fell to Quinn because he was the oldest and usually the only one who could legally be seen with the alcohol.
“Y/N,” Quinn replied, “you know, the other 22 year old who can drink. Plus she helped me set up the food so you know it won’t kill you.” Quinn rolled his eyes at Jack, he really was clueless the majority of the time.
“Oh,” Jack sighed. He would have tried to make some connections between Y/N and Quinn heading out to the shops together and them getting the boat ready, but he was too occupied with his phone and replying to Faith with snapchats of himself on the lake.
Alex didn’t need Jack to ask his older brother where the alcohol was as it was obvious, where else would it be but the fridge. He swiped himself a pineapple White Claw and a Cherry one for Y/N. She hadn’t asked, but he assumed that she wouldn’t turn down a drink. “So,” Alex started, wrapping his arm around Y/N, “you deal with Jack all season long, and you choose to come here and hang out with him more?”
“Let me make this clear”, she replied, cracking open the can and taking a sip, “I did not come here to hang out with Jack any longer.”
“So why come to Michigan,” Alex asked, genuinely curious. He didn’t know how someone could put up with Jack on an almost daily basis, but to come and hang out with him and his friends during her summer break, it seemed crazy to him.
“Needed a break from Jersey City, couldn’t go home, here was the next best thing,” she smiled before flicking her head down so the sunglasses that were resting on the top of her head sat on the bridge of her nose. “Even if it means dealing with Jack pining over a woman once again.”
Quinn looked back to see Alex pissing himself with laughter at something Y/N had said as she sipped on the drink he hoped she had got for herself. The pair seemed to be in a conversation, ignoring the antics of the other boys on the boat and it made Quinn hate himself for being the responsible one. He wanted to be sat at the back of the boat, with his arm wrapped around Y/N, forgetting everyone else even existed. But he didn’t let his emotions show, he couldn’t.
The boat didn’t stay on the lake for too long as Quinn knew that Jack wanted to get a barbecue going so after everyone had jumped into the lake and got enough pictures for their first Instagram post of the summer, he turned the boat around and drove slowly back to the shore. Y/N steadied herself before attempting to get off the boat but she could feel her feet slipping on the inside of the boat. Before she could fall down, a pair of strong arms caught her, keeping her from losing her balance.
“I’ve got you,” Quinn spoke calmly, “one foot in front of the other, you’ve got this.” Quinn’s voice soothed Y/N as she held his hand to get off the boat.
This action went unnoticed by most, except for Jack.
~~
Y/N was woken up to the sound of ceramic breaking and pans being smashed together and she had to admit that it wasn’t her preferred way to wake up. She grabbed one of her oversized Devils shirts given to her by one of the team and found her slippers before swinging open the door to the room which she was staying in. Standing directly opposite her was Quinn, his hair disheveled and bags under his eyes very apparent. All he was wearing was a pair of team issued shorts and his thighs were on full display and Y/N had to stop herself from staring at him.
“I think we get coffee, some fruit and head outside to ignore whatever they’re doing,” Quinn suggested. All Y/N could do was agree because the sound was causing her to develop a headache.
“I’m just gonna grab some Advil before we head out,” she explained to Quinn before running back up the stairs to find the medication.
Quinn started to collect some fruit out of the fridge before setting the coffee machine up to make Y/N’s favourite. There was also a jug of chilled water which he brought out to the decking along with some glasses. Next was the plates and bowls and he thought he would go without anyone noticing him until Jack shouted directly at him.
“Yo Quinner,” he exclaimed, “whatcha doing?” Jack questioned as he dodged some pancake mix being thrown through the air by Alex.
“I am getting some breakfast, then going to sit outside and eat it,” Quinn groaned, really wishing he could have just not been spotted.
“Alone?” His younger brother questioned, knowing that it was likely that he wouldn’t be alone.
“For gods sake Jack,” Quinn replied, “Y/N isn’t feeling too good so I’m hoping some fresh air and food helps her, okay?” All Jack could do was nod, he was pretty preoccupied with all of his hockey friends so didn’t really have much time to spend with Y/N but was glad she was being friendly with his older brother.
The cool wind hit Y/N as soon as she stepped outside and Quinn noticed immediately. He excused himself quickly before speeding into the laundry room to find one of his mums spare blankets. A large fluffy blanket engulfed Y/N, immediately warming her up. She thanked Quinn profusely but his only response was a blush.
“Eat some food then have some Advil,” Quinn instructed. “We can always take the boat out later because sea air is the best air.”
“Just the two of us?” Y/N asked, really hoping that it would be a chill day.
“If that’s what you want, yeah, just the two of us,” Quinn confirmed. “Let’s eat then we can get the boat ready.” She nodded, looking forward to another day out on the water.
~~
The cool breeze floated over Y/N’s skin as she drank out of the travel mug Quinn had prepared for her with some peppermint tea. She sat next to Quinn as he aimlessly directed the boat along the lake. Sometimes she even steered the boat, reaching over over Quinn’s lap. That was until he had enough and pulled her onto his lap.
His hand found presence on her thigh, thumb rubbing semi circles on the jeans she wore. Y/N settled into his touch, slowly sipping on her tea, which had cooled down sufficiently for her to drink.
There were only two more days until she left to return to Jersey, back to a job where she ground coffee beans and made the most ridiculous caffeine concoctions for those doing summer school in Jersey. The occasional banker or lawyer would pop in because the queue was usually shorter than ones in the centre of town.
“You’ll come visit when you’re playing in Jersey right?” Y/N asked meekly, not too sure if Quinn would want to keep the friendship they had going.
“Of course,” he replied, shifting slightly so that his whole hand was now sitting on her thigh. “I can’t deal with Jack and Luke on my own.”
Y/N replied with an awkward smile and nod of her head. She knew she wouldn’t be the only reason he was in Jersey and that was okay.
“It’ll be great to see you too,” Quinn finally got out. He felt a tug towards Y/N whenever she was around, he wanted to be around her, he wanted to talk to her. He enjoyed the time they had spent together even if it was Jack who introduced them.
“I’d like to see Vancouver too,” she spoke, trying to convince herself that she could do this. “I’ve never been to the West Coast.” A small smile graced Quinn’s face, hoping he had read the signals right.
“Vancouver is nice,” he said, “not as nice as here though. I’d pick being back home over Vancouver any day. I’m back end of August if you want to come visit, get away from Jack at the start of training camp.”
“I’d like that,” she replied, turning her head around to look at Quinn. He moved the thumb that was resting on her thigh to slowly draw around her bottom lip, eyes flicking between her lips and her eyes. “Kiss me Quinn.”
He didn’t need any more convincing as he pressed his hips to hers in a sweet kiss. The pair shared a few more kisses before Y/N pointed out a small island where they could dock the boat and sit on the beach for a few hours.
Quinn opened out the picnic blanket on the sandy ground, before quickly popping back onto the boat to grab a few drinks. Y/N and Quinn both cracked open a can of soda before digging a small hole to rest the can in when they weren’t holding it.
She kicked her sandals off, encouraging Quinn to do the same. He complied, not realising that Y/N was going to drag him into the water. Looking back to the blanket, Quinn thought he would be able to throw his shirt over to it so he could give it to Y/N if she got too many of her clothes wet.
It didn’t go as he planned as the wind caught his shirt, blowing it back into the water. Quinn watched as she started laughing at him, not with malice.
She was beautiful.
~~
“Quinn,” Y/N giggled as she rounded the corner. Quinn was trying to lift her up and place her into a fireman’s hold over his shoulder but she wasn’t having any of it. She darted out of his grasp as soon as she noticed what he was thinking. They looked like two young lovers spending a summer holiday on the lake.
Jack looked out of the window to see who was causing the noise, thinking it was one of their neighbours but was pleasantly surprised when he saw his brother and best friend. Inviting Y/N out to Michigan was one of the best things he had ever done. Jack hoped that the pair would end up hitting it off, but going back to Jersey with a potential sister-in-law was certainly not on his mind.
Life might be better in Hoboken, but holidays are better in Michigan.

It is hard to think of a pathology in American urban life, from crime to poverty to fatherlessness, that is not blamed on “underfunded schools.” Progressives conjure up images of a run-down schoolhouse with moldy walls, tattered decades-old textbooks, and musty blackboards to explain away the decades of academic underperformance and high drop-out, truancy, and delinquency rates in inner-city schools.
A new report from the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, highlighted in a recent column by the Institute’s policy and editorial associate, casts serious doubt on the proposition that most poor children in America attend “underfunded schools.” In fact, in many states, the opposite is true.
The report’s author, Adam Tyner, found that “students from poor families generally attend better-funded schools than students from wealthier families.” He found that all but three states now use a progressive school-funding scheme, meaning they compensate for disparities in local tax revenue with state and federal dollars to ensure more-equal funding of students across school districts.
It wasn’t always that way. Many schools in the early 20th century were racially segregated, and conditions across those schools were manifestly unequal. Even after the Court overturned school segregation in Brown v. Board of Education, inequalities persisted for decades. Since states often financed their schools with local tax revenue, the mass urban exodus in response to crime, rioting, and disorder cratered those cities’ tax bases and plagued school districts well into the 1980s and ’90s, leaving them understaffed and underfunded.
Today, however, policy changes and legal action have not only corrected but reversed these disparities in most states. At least twenty-seven state supreme courts have overturned school-financing systems for being insufficiently egalitarian, prompting states to implement progressive funding schemes to correct for local revenue disparities. The gap between per pupil funding in wealthier and poorer school districts closed nationally in 2005.
States typically now spend more on poor students than on wealthier ones. The most comprehensive national study of states’ school funding found that states on average spend $529 more per student per year in school districts with poorer populations than in those with wealthier populations. Many states now have funds set aside to subsidize the educations of poor students, such as Tennessee, which last year passed a student-based education-financing bill giving each child a base dollar amount to spend on his education, regardless of his socioeconomic status, and gives “disadvantaged” students an additional stipend beyond the base allowance.
While schools districts within states now largely receive equal or near-equal funding regardless of the districts’ tax revenue, states’ preference for poorer students is actually stronger when you look at student-level, rather than district-level, data. In addition to state and federal aid to poor students, boards of education typically allocate more of their district’s resources to schools serving poorer children than to those serving comparatively wealthier ones.
Because complaints about “underfunded schools” no longer have a factual basis, Tyner notes that “equity-minded school-finance reformers now advocate for ’adequacy’ funding,” that is, spending more on poor children’s educations than on rich children’s. Maybe you agree with that approach, and given the other obstacles poor children have to overcome, I certainly could see an argument for it. But it is debatable whether, or to what extent, increasing school budgets will improve students’ academic performance at all.
Studies on the question are gate-kept by education professionals who, in addition to not being very impressive—one Rutgers education professor’s study concluded that “sufficient financial resources are a necessary underlying condition for providing quality education,” which just begs the question—have a vested interest in preserving the status quo. Some localities, where that gatekeeping isn’t so strong, have found that the relationship between a school’s per pupil expenditure and student performance is either weak or nonexistent. Chicago school districts, for example, spend more than $17,000 per student per year—the figure jumps to almost $30,000 when you include all sources of funding—and only 20 percent of the districts’ students can read at grade level. Other research indicates that money can improve students’ outcomes, but it depends how the money is allocated—spending more on things like teachers’ pensions or on superfluous tools such as “SmartBoards” is unlikely to move the needle.
It is harder, no doubt, for a child in an inner-city school to get an adequate education than it is for a similarly endowed student in a suburban school. But it is harder for those students for reasons that have little to do with the funding and much more to do with the school environment itself and disorder in the community at large. Urban schools have significantly higher suspension rates than do suburban and rural school districts, and it’s not because the (largely black) staffs of these schools are racist. It is almost impossible to learn in an environment where your peers are constantly acting out. No amount of funding, or electronic devices in the classroom, will change that.

Experiencing the Magic of Ireland
By Smruthi Sathya
Class of 2025, Rutgers Business School, Member of the Honors College
Tumblr media
Last spring, I had the opportunity to take the embedded study abroad "To Be a Pilgrim" Interdisciplinary Honors Seminar and travel to Ireland alongside Honors College and SAS Honors Program students.
In this course, we immersed ourselves in Irish traditions and walked historic pilgrim paths. While I had always planned to study abroad in college, I did not expect that a ten day trip would change so much about the way I viewed the world.
During the semester, we learned about the importance of setting a goal or intention prior to embarking on a pilgrimage. I often feel like my brain is running a marathon, so I decided to set my intention to live more in the present. On our first walk in Glendalough, my new perspective helped me discover new shades of green. With sheep running in the distance and tall trees soaring above, my first glimpse of Ireland was a chapter out of a fairytale. Leaving the past behind and forgetting the future to come, I stayed with the sheep in that moment and etched the new shade of green into my memory.
While walking these pilgrimages, I helped forge blossoming friendships into a newfound family. On our 25 mile pilgrim walk to Croagh Patrick, our group sang classic 2010 throwbacks one after another, shared our favorite college memories, and laughed until our laughter echoed off of the mountains that surrounded us. Constant curiosity to learn more about the significance of the various pilgrim paths, coupled with a revived purpose, made this trip a turning point in my life.
More than anything else, the people I met on this trip truly made it an unforgettable experience. From waiters at restaurants to our host’s grandmotherly love, my classmates and I shared stories, customs, and traditions with everyone we met. During our stay in Galway, we learned an Irish step dance snippet from a professional Riverdancer and even learned a traditional broom dance! And I will never forget my first conversation with an Irish native on the train to Wicklow who said that the weather cleared up because we brought the sunshine with us.
By the end of the trip, I had never felt more at peace. With the lessons I learned from the people I met and the reflections I made during our pilgrimages, I was able to view my life through a new lens and envision a future that stretched outside of the confines I had previously set for myself. I will always be grateful to the Honors College for allowing me to embark on this physical and mental journey and for giving me some of my favorite college memories.
There was something about this trip that felt fantastical—in the way the trees breathed and the sunsets sang. Maybe it was a result of the tired haze from all our pilgrimages, or maybe it was the magic of Ireland.

Student Music-Maker Interview
The music-making process is something that I have always appreciated. So much thought, effort, and time goes into making something sound good. It is hard to combine everything, like finding the right notes, using your voice, and uniquely expressing yourself. Music is always evolving, and artists constantly use their minds to produce something different. This week, I had the opportunity to interview a student who made an amazing song called Grow. Her name is Mahima Muddu and she is a freshman at Rutgers. Her song is very peaceful and catchy. The instruments are amazing the singing is so calming to hear.
Here are some questions that get to know the artist and her song on a more personal level:
It’s so interesting to meet a student who makes music on the side. What inspired you to make music?
I’ve been playing music ever since I was a child. I was in piano lessons and I also played the clarinet. I also experimented with so many other instruments, like guitar, trumpet, trombone, drums, and the ukulele. I absolutely loved playing music, but I had always wanted to be on the other side of it. So, when I found out about my high school’s Intro to Music Technology and Composition elective, I just joined in my junior year of high school. My final test that year was to write a song. It was my very first song. That song is the reason I make music. I just loved that it was mine. My song. I made it. A real song! I know lots of people write songs and it maybe wasn’t that special, but it was my song and I loved that feeling. That feeling is the reason I make music, I think.
Wow, I can’t believe this was your first song. It sounded so professional! Was there any artist’s vibe you were going for?
I listen to a lot of Phoebe Bridgers, Mac DeMarco, and Mitski, but I don’t feel like any of that ever shows in the music I make. Although I try to make songs like my favorite artists, I usually feel like the song writes itself and takes on whatever vibe it wants. I think for the song I wrote for our Podcast Project, I was going for a Mitski vibe at the time, but it just never really took shape like that. So yes, there are artists that influence me, but not exactly how I want them to.
Tumblr media
I like that you took your own path. Elaborating on your song writing itself, how was the music-making process?
The music-making process is extremely fickle. I don’t know exactly what the right mood is to write music, but it’s usually extremely late at night. And it’s hours at a time. I’ll sit down for hours until the sun comes up and make a song. After that, there’s a lot of fixing and fiddling to make it exactly how you want. In the end, it’s never really perfect for me. There’s always more to do.
But for music making, it's pretty much only garage band and I really like using the drums and the synths. They're a lot of fun. For singing though, I have very little experience. I took singing lessons in elementary school and was part of the choir then, but after that, I never really focused on my voice but I did use it to demo my songs for the actual singers to know what it was supposed to sound like.
Just to get to know you better, what’s your favorite song?
My favorite song right now is Motion Sickness by Phoebe Bridgers.
youtube
This song was really good and I’m sure I, as well as many others, would like to hear more. Do you have any new projects you’re thinking about?
I actually don’t have any projects at all that I’m thinking about. Ever since I started college, I haven’t been sure where to take this music thing. I’m majoring in Computer Science and I don’t know how this could fit into it. I’m so busy with school and my job and I just wonder what I’d do with any more music if I ever made it. Music is on that ‘maybe’ level for me right now, even though I love it a lot.
I hope that she does continue music because even though it is hard to balance many things, finding time for things that you love is important. Above were a few questions that dove not just into the music-making process, but the artist and her background. It’s interesting to see how people are inspired to create music. She plays a diverse range of instruments and has a  distinct musical taste, and her music subtly reflects those qualities while also creating her own style.  I hope that she finds time to make more music because this song was great!

THE DEGENERATE’S GUIDE TO COLLEGE FOOTBALL TV WATCH ‘EM UPS 2021: WEEK TWO, A MUDDLED AND MAUDLIN WEEK OF MAYHEM IN HONOR OF THOSE WE LOST
Tumblr media
RTARL would like to extend our warmest holiday wishes to those who celebrate and, even if you don’t, happy 9/11. Now who’s ready for some FOOTBALL!!!!?!?!
Tumblr media
So after two weeks of games that combine to count as only one official week even though some teams have already played twice we have only one real question answered: is Alabama still good? Yes, they are. Everything else is still liquefying vapor.
I am assuming everybody is waiting with baited breath for an RTARLsman but I don’t have anything yet. I guess the not-Master Teague RBs on Ohio State are the frontrunners for now. Or that one guy from that one team who was good. You know who I mean.
Saturday, September 11
Matchup    Time (ET)     TV/Mobile
Illinois at Virginia   11:00am   ACCN
Jeff George won Citrus Bowl MVP for the Illini against the Hoos in his last game as a student athlete before becoming the #1 overall pick in the 1990 NFL Draft. Based on this history it is safe to presume that whoever the QB is for Illinois today will be the #1 pick in 2022.
VMI at Kent State   11:30am   ESPN3
I’m not sure on this but maybe this game is cancelled.
WKU at Army    11:30am   CBSSN
Army is favored by 6. I bet this game is boring.
Norfolk State at Wake Forest    12:00pm   ACCNX
I don’t see a line listed but whatever it is bet against Wake covering.
Indiana State at Northwestern     12:00pm    BTN
This game is an act of terrorism.
Alabama State at 25 Auburn     12:00pm    SECN
Real body bag season starts today, huh?
Youngstown State at Michigan State  12:00pm   BTN
The Michigan State running back is the guy I was trying to think of earlier! He’s pretty good. Not good enough to make me watch this but I will check on his stats every so often.
Tulsa at Oklahoma State   12:00pm   FS1
I bet Mike Gundy has some really salient thoughts on the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and I can’t wait to hear them.
South Carolina at East Carolina   12:00pm      ESPN2
South Carolina is a two point favorite against an East Carolina team that is, per my understanding, not exactly good. So I can only extrapolate that South Carolina is likewise not good.
Pitt at Tennessee  12:00pm   ESPN
Look, I’m not going to pretend this is good television but if Pitt rocks their classic yellow helmets and Tennessee wears non-alternates the colors on the screen will at least be pleasing. The thought of the actual football involved hurts my brain but it’s interesting that the points have gone from a consensus pick ‘em to Pitt -3 over the course of the week. Does Tennessee have any players that are good enough that by missing the game they could impact the gambling that much? Or are people just squaring themselves with the fact the the Vols are really and truly a ruined burnt out hole of a football program? Pound the latter.
12 Oregon at 3 Ohio State  12:00pm   FOX
Losing Kayvon Thibideaux certainly isn’t going to help Oregon but he’s not usually on the field as a run stopper anyway and if Ohio State learned anything last week it’s that they can just run until they feel like throwing a pass. Oregon actually has some legit talent on the d-line besides Thibideaux but the Ducks are gonna be hard-pressed to keep things within two scores here.
Miami (Ohio) at Minnesota   12:00pm   ESPN
If Oregon can’t make a game of it in Columbus look out because this time block is an absolute wasteland. There is scant reason to turn the TV on for the early schedule other than gambling purposes.
Kennesaw State at Georgia Tech   12:00pm    RSN/ESPN3
Georgia Tech probably should have closed up shop after Paul Johnson retired. Either that or just absolutely slathered the football program in dollars. The Yellow Jackets being unable to land any big time recruits while playing in Atlanta is a real mindfuck. They aren’t a AA program playing dress up in a “power” conference they’ve got actual history. I don’t mean to give the impression I want them to be good but I don’t understand how they can be such fodder for so long.
13 Florida at USF    1:00pm    ABC
Remember that year when USF was the best program in the state? Wild stuff. Weird, wild stuff. I know the deal with UF is that they don’t go out of state for contract games but it’s actually kind of surprising they even bothered to keep this trip to Tampa on the schedule. Like the area recruits would probably be happier to go see a game at The Swamp than to kick around their hometown for a pile of shit like this.
Wyoming at NIU    1:30pm   ESPN+
I’m not gonna open the ESPN app for this but if it was on ESPN2 I’d probably check in on it during commercials. Aesthetically pleasing trash with an upside for actual entertainment.
Middle Tennessee at 19 Virginia Tech    2:00pm   ACCNX
Virginia Tech’s home crowd scene was the normie story of last week’s games. People that don’t watch college football were either aghast or frantically waving their blue lives matter flags in response. Us in this space just ate the shame and forgot it happened by the time Saturday’s games kicked off. My theory is that VPI is not actually any good but UNC’s 2020 season was a well-timed fluke and the last hurrah of Mack Brown’s storied coaching career. The Hokies are at home, though, and MTSU is almost certainly not on the same athletic level as the Turkey Gobblers so I’d probably take the home team -20 if I were so inclined to wager on this particular game that is being broadcast on the ACC’s new pornography channel.
Rutgers at Syracuse    2:00pm    ACCN
Holy fuck does this game suck. Reuniting former Big East, uh, rivals (??? does Rutgers have any natural enemies?) in a cross-conference classic betwixt the B1G and the ACC.
Duquesne at Ohio   2:00pm   ESPN3
I don’t think I need to explain to you all the national title implications riding on this game.
Toledo at 8 Notre Dame    2:30pm     Peacock
Just remember that if you subscribe to Peacock you are at the very least tacitly supporting Notre Dame. If for some reason you’re watching this please report back on how many of those defensive pick plays Notre Dame runs. They were doing that shit constantly against Florida State last week and it drove me nuts. I think the idea is that you are so flagrantly illegal so often that the refs grow numb to it and just don’t call it at all.
Robert Morris at Central Michigan     3:00pm    ESPN3
Not to be outdone by the early games, the 3 o’clock set is equally terrible.
Purdue at UConn    3:00pm    CBSSN
I bet Edsall still gets bonuses for stupid shit even now that he’s retired or whatever the official designation was for him no longer coaching.
Boston College at UMass    3:30pm    FloFootball/NESN+
I don’t know what FloFootball is but I know it isn’t anything to do with the state of Florida.
Tumblr media
Ball State at 11 Penn State    3:30pm    FS1
It surprises me to see Penn State as only -22.5 favorites. That seems very kind to Ball State. Hopefully I’m wrong and the Ball State Lettermans take it to the Sanduskys.
Murray State at 7 Cincinnati    3:30pm    ESPN+
Practice week continues.
Temple at Akron    3:30pm    ESPN+
Pound the under.
Georgia Southern at Florida Atlantic   3:30pm   Stadium
There is really nothing going on this week.
Air Force at Navy   3:30pm   CBS
Middies vs. Fly Boys in the first leg of the Commander’s Cup on the twentieth anniversary of 9/11. I can’t imagine the amount of emotional manipulation that’s going to make its way onto this broadcast. Normally I watch these games but I don’t think I can do it this year.
UAB at 2 Georgia    3:30pm    ESPN2
Georgia may well be absurdly talented on the defensive side of the ball but I’d be surprised to see them make it through the regular season with fewer than two losses.
5 Texas A&M at Colorado     3:30pm     FOX
This is only interesting if the Aggies spring a leak.
California at TCU    3:30pm    ESPNU
Things most certainly are not looking up.
Buffalo at Nebraska    3:30pm    BTN
Nebraska is in an interesting position because if they buck the odds and end up being good after we’ve all been so ready to see a National Championship-winning coach get fired that would be funny but if they end up being really bad it’s even funnier. Go Bulls!
Mercer at 1 Alabama    4:00pm   SECN
I’ll cry a little if Saban pulls the starters in the first half and the Tide beats Mercer by less than they beat Miami.
South Alabama at Bowling Green   4:00pm    ESPN+
10 Iowa at 9 Iowa State    4:30pmABC
This is not the kind of top 10 matchup I can just sit idly by and let it happen. Your silence is complicity in this monstrous display of modernity.
SC State at 6 Clemson    5:00pm      ACCN
Clemson dropped all the way to #6 and they’ll hang around the top of the polls because they don’t have the toughest conference schedule in the world but my confidence in them is not high right now. I think the new QB is just a guy. He’s talented as hell but I don’t see him being great.
Illinois State at Western Michigan     5:00pm   ESPN3
This is either MACtion or MACtion adjacent and I have only one word for this midwestern trash: abhorrent.
LIU at West Virginia   5:00pm    ESPN+
LIU plays football?
Lamar at UTSA      6:00pm    ESPN3
Downside: You’re watching one of the least important games of the year. Upside: You’re really not missing anything.
Portland State at Washington State    6:00pm    P12N
Washington State was a perfect spot for the stupid pirate fuckhead and his leaving has ruined the program and, eventually, his reputation. Not relevant to this game necessarily but this game isn’t relevant to anything else, either.
Gardner-Webb at Charlotte   6:00pm    ESPN3
Oh, yeah, feel the excitement.
Bethune-Cookman at UCF   6:30pm   ESPN+
Go Cats.
NC Central at Marshall    6:30pm    ESPN+
The hits keep coming.
Houston at Rice   6:30pm    CBSSN
I’ve always had a soft spot for Holgo and for Houston football but somehow I really don’t like seeing him coach the Cougs. This is SWC magic but with no magic. UNLESS! Houston can put up 100. I don’t think they even have the guys to do it but this is Rice we’re talking about here.
Nicholls at Louisiana    7:00pm    ESPN3
Keep the energy up.
North Texas at SMU   7:00pm   ESPN+
I bet is MS621 were still alive he’d be at this game giving Spencer’s boys hell. Sadly he died doing what he loved, curing his COVID by eating ivermectin paste out of a horse’s butt. R.I.P., friend. Neigh to you wherever you are.
Southeastern La. at Louisiana Tech   7:00pm    ESPN3
Even the low tier stuff is geared up for annihilation. This is a bodybag week for all time.
Memphis at Arkansas State    7:00pm    ESPN+
Memphis getting less than a touchdown against Arkansas State seems like easy money but I have no real concept of either of these teams just yet. Maybe the end is nigh for the Tigers glory years? I sure hope not but it’s possible.
NC State at Mississippi State    7:00pm     ESPN2
This game should be as fun as a parents funeral.
Southern Illinois at Kansas State   7:00pm      ESPN+
Over the past week I experienced derision for referring the the guys in purple and silver as “Kansas State” instead of “K State” and that stung because it always surprises me that anybody cares about them enough to have a strong opinion about them.
Stephen F. Austin at Texas Tech    7:00pm    ESPN+
Shrugs
15 Texas at Arkansas    7:00pm   ESPN
Let’s see if Texas is ready to run with the big boys of the SEC! Arkansas is given a decent shot to win this game and that makes the “15″ next to Texas appear extremely suspect in my eyes.
Texas Southern at Baylor    7:00pm   ESPN+
This week Texas Southern is the people’s champion.
Texas State at FIU   7:00pm    ESPN+
Oh, Butch, why have you done this to yourself?
Western Carolina at 4 Oklahoma      7:00pm     PPV
All the Westen Carolina fans are buying this PPV to see their guys score 40.
New Mexico State at New Mexico    7:00pm     Stadium
I looked up the historic rivalry last year to figure out why it was played early in the season instead of at the end but I’ve forgotten and don’t feel the need to look it up again. I figured out how to watch Stadium on my TV but I also forgot that and don’t feel the need to look it up again.
Appalachian State at 22 Miami (FL)  7:00pm   ESPNU
My gut tells me Miami is probably legitimately about the 14th best team in the country but I still would never advise you to bet actual money on the Hurricanes. Are they 9 points better than App State? Easily. They should win by 20+. Are they liable to fuck around and lose or scrape out a win in the final seconds? Absolutely. Let’s fuckin’ go.
Morgan State at Tulane    7:00pm    ESPN+
A lot of people learned to love the Green Wave last week but it’s hard to keep that going with their schedule. Don’t forget them later in the year when the CBSSN glow is really shining.
Liberty at Troy   7:00pm   ESPN+
Liberty -4 is maybe my surest advice of the week. If Malik Willis is as good as his press the fake school should have this game on ice early.
Eastern Michigan at 18 Wisconsin   7:00pm    FS1
I find Wisconsin’s losing effort against Penn State last week to be a personal affront against me and all of nature.
Eastern Kentucky at Louisville    7:00pm   ACCNX
I think this game being broadcast at night on ACCNX means they’re playing naked.
Grambling State at Southern Miss    7:00pm    ESPN3
This is the kind of game that belongs on an app.
Hampton at Old Dominion    7:00pm    ESPN3
This is the kind of game that belongs on a well-worn high school football field.
Austin Peay at 20 Mississippi   7:30pm     ESPN+/SECN+
This is a pretty big OOC game for an SEC team.
Georgia State at 24 North Carolina    7:30pm    RSN/ESPN3
One of several GSUs, I think this is the one I most hope emerges victorious this week.
Idaho at Indiana   7:30pm    BTN
Wait, wasn’t Indiana like #10 last week? What the hell happened to them? No, don’t tell me. Seriously, don’t.
Missouri at Kentucky     7:30pm    SECN
When the SEC hits 24 teams the “S!E!C!” chants are gonna seem really stupid.
Howard at Maryland    7:30pm    BTN
There’s no official line for this game but I hope the Bison can pull off the upset in this classic local rivalry game.
Jacksonville State at Florida State    8:00pm   ACCN
Still shaking my head at FSU icing their own kicker. Jesus, Norvell. Get your shit together.
McNeese at LSU     8:00pm      ESPN+/SECN+
LOLSU was my lock of the week last week if you’re considering taking gambling advice from me.
Washington at Michigan    8:00pm    ABC
UDub lost to a 1-AA team last week and now they have to go on the road and beat Michigan. Which seems inevitable, to be honest.
Cal Poly at Fresno State    10:00pm    CW59
The murder rate will continue to increase as the day progresses. I always kind of like it when a local broadcast shows up on the sheet. So pretty much none of us have legal access to this game. It makes it more special.
San Diego State at Arizona    10:00pm    P12N
Pac-12 Network is similar to CW59 in that almost nobody in the country has legal access to their broadcasts. If you’ve read enough of these posts you are aware that SDSU is my weird very deep backup team. I don’t have a reason to align myself with the school or program, I just tend to enjoy watching their games.
Vanderbilt at Colorado State     10:00pm    CBSSN
This is an abomination.
21 Utah at BYU     10:15pm    ESPN
This is a lowkey fun rivalry. I’m pretty sure I write the same thing every year but it’s still true. Go Utes.
Stanford at 14 USC     10:30pm    FOX
I think USC could win a national championship and I’d still be baffled that Clay Helton is their coach. Of course, they won’t win a national championship as long as Clay Helton is their coach but they apparently won’t ever get embarrassing enough to fire him, either.
Idaho State at Nevada    10:30pm    Stadium
This is the lowpoint of the week’s schedule and you have to stay up late to watch it on a network that only exists as an app or as part of a hidden unlockable download-only level of cable subscription. This is the beauty of the college game.
UNLV at 23 Arizona State    10:30pm   ESPN2
Herm Edwards figured out the trick to looking good in the Pac-12 without having a particularly great team and I can’t make up my mind if I’m rooting for him to keep sliding on that rail or to fall off it. I think I’ve come around to rooting for him but it’s a very dynamic and fluid situation.
Hawaii at Oregon State   11:00pm    FS1
Hawaii gets to play at their normal time for a game against the bottom of the barrel of the Pac-12 but they’re an 11-point underdog. If you’re ever going to take Hawaii, this is the stars lining up for you to do it. It’s still a big “if” but I’m saying there’s a chance.

Hung out this week w friends who r doing a bfa and mfa respectively and they both separately shamed me for not making a lot of new work so today on my day off maybe I will start a painting but it’s bcs I wanted to not bcs of them. Also though every time I talk to a painting student I’m more convinced I did the right thing taking this gap year but maybe I should even consider waiting another year for grad school bcs some of my top choices are not even accepting painting mfa applicants for 2021 like Rutgers for instance which would have been epic but on the other hand I will literally go insane if I don’t get my mfa ASAP I can’t handle being outside academia as toxic as it is I need that constant shallow validation and also I need it ASAP bcs I have to start teaching while I am still young hip and sexy
