Best Pokémon Rival Tournament- Contestant Bio: Hop
Tumblr media
Name: Hop
Generation: 8
Games: Sword, Shield
Starter/Signature Pokémon: Rillaboom/Cinderace/Inteleon
As we inch closer to the most recent games, Sword and Shield have a few rivals to offer us. The first is Hop, brother of champion Leon, and- as is often tradition- the player's neighbour.
Hop has a passion and excitement for battle that few other rivals live up to- so much so that he's the rival that the player battles the most out of any other. This includes 8 matches in the main story alone, along with fighting alongside the player in multi battles or max raids 4 times in the mainstory. Both those numbers increase significantly if you include the post game and DLC as well!
Despite his enthusiasm though, Hop's journey isn't easy. He faces a struggle of overcoming loss after loss, both to the player and fellow rival Bede. That, combined with the pressure of being the champion's younger brother, makes Hop doubt himself, and he ends up pretty down on himself for a while.
It takes some time and experimentation with his team, but eventually Hop finds his feet again, regaining confidence and helping the player through the crisis of the main story, and being able to accept his losses more gracefully.
Will Hop suffer more defeat in the tournament? Or is this his time to shine?

Things that happened while I was researching pokemon in the wild
I have so many traumatic stories, and I'm going to share a few here, so people can't say professors are weak :)
Tumblr media
-I was taking notes of a tinkaton who was fixing her hammer, and she saw me. She then proceeded to come at full speed with her giant ass STEEL hammer. Managed to escape by threatening her with a cinderace
-I was watching a flareon and leafeon battle, but the leafeon got really hurt and started smoking. If you know anything about weed, you know where this is going. I got really high and stared at a puddle for 15 minutes because I thought I saw kyogre in it
-Almost died because a greavard decided it wanted to rub against me
-I accidently ended up in a g-max den in Galar without my pokeballs (I was camping next to one and I tripped into it) and had to face a g-max Gengar. Almost died because the little bitch used his fucking death call to lure me in its mouth. Got out because my orbeetle came and saved my dumbass
-Apparently leaving a 12 year old child going through the emotional distraught of losing the pokemon league onto a godamn ice mountain with no connection to the outside world for a week in the crown tundra was a good idea. I was cold as shit, I was hungry, and I was tired. Me and all of my pokemkn had to cuddle Flash (cinderace) to keep warm
-I .had. to. fucking collect. Squawkabilly shit. For research purposes (that stuff smells AWFUL)
-I once had to write a 3,000-word essay on pikachu fur for my research tasks
-A group of grafaiai gained up on me at night. Do you know how scary it is to be hiding from 13 grafaiai at 3am like it's a fucking horror movie?
-The one time I went to Kanto, a butterfree used sleep powder on me. Idk exactly bow long I was out. All I know is that when I woke up, I was holding hands with hypno and walking it to a cave. First time I've ever physically attacked a pokemon, and the fastest I've ran (I'm never going back to Kanto).
-A major rule of being a pokemon professor: try your hardest not to interact wild pokemon. Unless you're catching them or battling them, stay out of sight!
That rule was completely broken when a bunch of newborn gible saw me and started being really curious and playing with me. Tried my best to gently push them off, but that made them sad, and they started crying. And of COURSE this alerts their garchomp mother, who is FURIOUS and has it out for my ass. I didn't wanna battle it because she had babies to care for, so I just ran. I fucking ran. From a pokemon. That flies faster. Then a jet airplane.
Here's some advice: if a garchomp is after you, and you have no pokemon, punch it as fucking hard as you can in the snout. A lot of nerves are there, and it will stun them and freeze them for about one minute, and that's when you run. This also works for sharpeado.
But yeah that's how I escaped. Not that strong so idk what miracle came over me. But I jumped off a small cliff and hid in a tiny cave until I was sure it was gone.
Those are all the stories I'm sharing for today. These were really fun to tell, so tell me if you wanna hear more!

Easter Cinderace isn't quite as catchy as Easter Lopunny, but Max is doing it anyway! He never needs much convincing to take part in events, but Alex sure does. Luckily, Alex can be bought with food and Max is more than happy to give up his share of the chocolate to someone who'll actually enjoy it lol
Happy Easter for those who celebrate it~!

Footballers as Pokémon trainers - pt1, Messi
I decided to mash my two biggest hyperfixations together so yeah let’s just get straight into it
just gonna tag my pokemon mutuals @liverpool-enjoyer and @addictivewhispering !!!! sorry for the tag haha, I just wanted u to see this and validate me :D
Lionel Messi
Messi is probably the only player who will be getting a full team of six, since he’s the greatest player ever I thought it would be fitting for him to have a full team. I based it off stuff about him. Just know that every footballer has a Cinderace as well to train with. I think Messi wouldn't be huge on Pokemon battling tbh, he definitely wouldn't be like a trainer who plays with strategy, moreso he just trusts his team to do their best despite whatever happens.
Tumblr media
1. Espurr
Max already explained this but I’d like to expand on it…Espurr is a lot of psychic power in a small body just like Messi is a lot of talent in a tiny body lol. I think Espurr would 100% be his starter Pokémon. I also doubt Messi would evolve it because he likes it this way. But Messi is definitely a good trainer, like really good he probably uses an Everstone.
Tumblr media
2. Gogoat
Get it? Because he’s the goat. Also Skiddo (gogoat’s previous form) reminds me a lot of young Messi, just like a strapping brash excitable individual I guess.
Tumblr media
3. Arcanine
Arcanine reminds me of Hulk, Messi’s dog. It’s also a fire type, which I think would be native to South America because it’s a sunny, hot weather continent. Arcanine’s “hair” also reminds me of Messi’s bleach hair era so 🤷🏽‍♂️
Tumblr media
4. Marshadow
Probably the only mythical/legendary I’m gonna give any player. I imagine Marshadow isn’t really “his”, but just it follows Messi around and randomly shows up at interviews and games and stuff like that. It travels in his shadow all the time and shows itself from time to time.
Tumblr media
5. A Shiny Phantump
I feel like Messi would be a ghost type trainer, if he specialized? Theyre silent and calm like he is. Phantump feels like it would be like Marshadow, just a quiet companion for Messi who follows him around and stuff. And if you're wondering why it's shiny...well white for la scaloneta, blue for barca and red for barca as well. also I just think messi would find those colors more welcoming I guess?
Tumblr media
6. Alolan Sandslash
This is probably Messi's main battler. It's blue and white like la Scaloneta and it can roll into a ball so it looks like a football. It's the least personality-connected which is why I think it'd be the one messi uses the most to battle. Its sharp edges also make me think of how Messi can be a killing machine on the pitch.
I wanna do more if y'all wanna see them!

Pokémon Rider Max
A superhero from Galar who was said to have saved it from a catastrophe and mysteriously vanished, only for their transformation belt to fall into the hands of a young Cinderace who used it to save everyone she knew and Galar in secret, that was until the belt got destroyed in a fight against the leader of a criminal gang. Since then, the Cinderace never told anyone that she was the hero of Galar, hoping that Max's "sacrifice" would lead to people becoming more heroic. What she didn't know was that a time traveler would one day give her back the the belt to let her become Pokémon Rider Max again. --- This was originally posted on my Patreon a week ago.

Unit Viability Speculation - August 2023
So...Paldea for Anniversary, then?  I’m gonna start salty then get normal about it.
Battle Tower Leon Leon comes in with Dragapult, having abandoned his old pal Eternatus, who has never once had a regular rerun.  Worse, Tech.  This entire fucking month is Tech, they just painted two of them a different color and are making it everyone’s problem.  Dragapult comes in with Dragon Darts, a 4-gauge move with 100 base power on each hit.  That is.  Pretty strong, dude.  That’s a two-hit Psychic.  Calm Down.  Will-o-Wisp, Buddy Breaking Swipe which lowers Atk/Def/Speed by 1, and TM which is +4 Atk/+3 crit with a dash of speed.  He does get Max Moves, and mid-400s attack, but over 500 speed.  Nice gauge, bro.  Piercing Blows is obscene, why are they throwing this on everything?  Impervious is...fine.  Unfortunate Strike 9 is...cute.  It’s only a two-hit move, bro, it’s not that helpful.  Interestingly...no tech on Burn.  The sync is Power Play.  Why do you burn?
Grid has a solid 5/5.  Go Viral, Punishing Strike, and BOGO on Buddy move.  The more standard grid has Brawn Sync, Flabbergast on Will-o-Wisp (actively bad for Uxie), Scorching Sync 5 and a 50% chance for SEUN when hitting a burned opponent, another Breaking Swipe debuff on a burned opponent, Berserker 2 for setup, and Max Countdown to maintain pace.
Okay, to start Galar off?  Fine.  My main hangup is the Burn.  Go Viral is 4/5, but a lot of his kit revolves around burn.  Moreover, for a Power Play sync?  This is a bad kit.  Breaking Swipe can be spammed after an action, but even with the rotation of TM -> Will-o-Wisp -> Buddy move, Leon’s hitting for effectively -5.  Cap is -18.  If you just swing twice, you get -8.  You see the problem?  Leon is an ineffective debuffer centered on debuffing, and has a chaser of burn requirements that are hard to facilitate.  Spread Burn is very hard to shop for, and even V!Kiawe doesn’t help, given that defense is the only stat he can’t debuff.  I kept waiting for Double Down on Leon here, but it never came.  He’s solidly alright.  DPS is impressive but the Tech angle feels...unnecessary.  This could easily have been a Striker.
Stadium Gloria They gave Cinderace to Gloria.  *deep breath*  I’m letting it go...
Fire Tech, of course.  Pyro Ball for damage, Bounce which is...definitely a choice!  High Jump Kick, and trainer move is the +4 Atk/+3 crit style.  And of course, like Greninja, it type shifts.  This time on Max Move.  Rebuff -2 to the target of the Max Move.  Base form gets Brawn Sync 5 and Fuel Economy.  Flying gets -2 cooldown each use of Bounce and Piercing Blows (for some reason), while Fighting gets Piercing Gaze and recovery per attack.  Notably.  Gloria does not boost accuracy.  That is reserved for a 2/5 grid node.  So 2/5 is mandatory.  All of these moves can miss.
Truth be told, Gloria’s grid fails to impress.  Haymaker is good, but almost every other meaningful source of damage, is on-type.  Which is so useless as to be hilarious, given the High Score mode will always count her as a Fire type, and is likely to be off-type unless someone is weak to Flying or Fighting.  Moreover, her kit seems to want to aim for evasion stacking with her TM’s +1 and Slippery Slope, following into +2 physical moves up next on a successful evade.  She’s the Tech.  She should not be in the line of fire, and Gauntlet has Sure Hit when it counts.  So this is unreliable at best.  To be brutally honest, and this is definitely the Cinderace hate talking...Gloria is not especially impressive.  The most significant thing about her kit feels like Fighting damage.  This is especially true considering...390 attack.  If that were base 490, we’d be pushing into the elites.  But 390 is just kinda average at this point.  I know, I’m not accounting for the severe benefit of -2 rebuff, but come on, man.  This is not that impressive to me.
Event Victor Okay now I’m mad, this is just Lucas with Dialga again.  I love Spectier, and they gave it to the wrong person.
Victor comes in as a new Field move type, which has a sync that extends the field effect in play...once time.  Only first sync.  This is meant to be a spin on Support.  Only the first sync matters.  The question now is, statistically, will they measure up to supports?  If yes, this is unique.  If no, this is Worse Tech.  To spare you the suspense, his stats are geared toward special offense, Worse Tech it is.
Shadow Ball, Mud Shot, Haze, TM is targeted and buffs Sp Atk +2/Crit +1.  Interesting.  Sync is standard 250 base.  He gets Max Moves, so either lower Defense with Ghost (bad for him) or boost special defense with Ground (sure?).  Max Regen, because they love that effect this update.  Acceleration under Ghost Zone, and Ghost Zone on entry.  I’ll cut to the big question: no he does not get extension on his grid.  Now, it bears mentioning that Field has been updated to be a bit clearer.  PRIOR TO SYNC, he will set his field effect.  I assume Field then sets the Zone/Terrain/Weather of sync type.  A pair like Gloria would’ve been devastating as Field then.  Because it’s pre-sync, it’s free buff, and the field effect that is set is granted the extension effect.  Presumably, extend 5.  This, at least, has some implications.  It’s still not as good as a raw Tech, but this means that the Field pair gets the benefit, and so does next sync thanks to extension.  That could be made useful.  It’s not like Tech syncs aren’t often overkill.
Gobsmack, On a Roll 1, Unbuffed Foe Sync Up 5, Debut Damage Reduction (Reflect), and Defense +1 for the team each use of his trainer move.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Victor might be my favorite of the three?  Mostly because the Field sync actually has some interesting application.  The idea of setting up pre-sync and giving extension to survive into the next sync is actually somewhat meaningful.  It’s not as good as a raw Tech, nor as useful as a raw Support, but it’s at least something.  He’s interesting, even if he’s not good, and that’s better than the other two.
Nemona So glad it’s Pawmot.  Pawmot is a new Sprint move type, which, on sync, gives -3 cooldown.  Which is not enough for a fast-ramp on second sync, you need to quad queue successfully as well, I’m just saying this should probably be Tech too.  We have enough Tech, but you know what I mean.
Thunderpunch for shit damage.  EX Speed caps her speed immediately.  Huh.  Buddy Double Shock becomes available when her speed is capped, and is middling damage but better be a full inertia buff based on speed.  It then grants Free Moves Next to all allies.  Lastly, trainer move is a target move that grants -2 sync cooldown, +2 attack, gradual healing, damage guard, and endurance.  Okay, great news.  Nemona’s sync has a Tech modifier in Inertia.  Sprint effects just went from middling to worth talking about.  Comparable to Field, the Tech sync is often overkill.  Trading extra, and oft unneeded, damage for a fast-ramp?  Good stuff.  Problem: Nemona is not in a position to abuse it.  Thunderpunch is bad, and her Buddy move is MP gatelocked.  Yes, she gets 1MP back on first sync, but that’s three shots, enough to clear a CS stage or a Gauntlet stage effectively if you’re lucky.  But you have to fire Buddy move first.  It’s just...not good.  Frankly.  I dunno, DPS feels like the way to go on these pairs.  Honing Hit is great self-setup, her trainer move can actually go to an ally if needed.  Soften Up is sure crit on sync.  Her attack and speed stats are over 500 at EX, so that’s real nice.
Her 5/5 grid isn’t bad.  Paralyzed Sundering, Enfeeble 2, Team Evasive Maneuvers for team dodge per hit, and +2 PMUN on sync to throw into Buddy move.  The rest of her grid offers Hostile Environment 9 for sure para, 90% more damage on Thunderpunch with raised speed, Staggering 3, Haymaker, Trip Up, Static Shock 5, and...Vigilance?  Okay.
I like it.  I think her kit is a little bit messy, but this is basically just “Tech with less raw power and more of a technical angle.”  I admit, I’m a fan.  Electric is a pretty weak type in my roster too, so while I kinda hoped she’d go Fighting, I won’t complain.
Olympia HEY KIDS YOU LIKE TECH?!  Olympia and Sigilyph are another goddamn Tech pair.  Thankfully, general pool.  Stored Power, Ancientpower, Calm Mind, and TM is +3 crit and stat reduction defense shield.  Sure?  Rising Tide innate sync, and decent stats, 410 at base.  Not bad for general pool.  Agile Entry 6 for immediate capped evasion is hysterical.  Doubles her own stat buffs (it notes any ally, but unless her buffs spread, it’s just her).  Swag Bag...2.  Which is not enough for Ancientpower, but come on grid money.
Brute Wits, love it.  Super Preparation 4 on Ancientpower, sure?  Smart Cookie, Swag Bag 2, Barricade and Ramp Up on Calm Mind which I don’t think get doubled but do drop this to two-turn setup, Double Down 5, and Ridicure 2.  Notably, she has a few odd defensive traits peppered in.  Nothing exceptional though.
I like it.  Stored Power is great DPS, and Rising Tide Psychic sync is great.  Calm Mind can be boosted to 2 turn setup, and Ancientpower is peak comedy.  Can’t wait for a Zinfogel showcase of Rock DPS Olympia.  I think she’ll be right at home in the general pool.
Drasna Another Tech, are you serious?  Okay...it’s fine.  Draco Meteor, Sludge Bomb, Toxic, TM gives +4 Sp Atk, +2 crit, SEUN.  Sync multiplier is Poison, stats are mid-400s offense and 300s speed, not bad in the slightest.  Unfortunately her passives suck.  Superduper Effective 5, Free Moves Next but only on-type, and Team Dauntless.  Come on, Drasna, you’re general pool and Elite Four, you can’t lose to Olympia.
BOGO on Toxic, and a random -1 when hitting a poisoned foe, would be nice if all her moves weren’t single-target.  Adrenaline 1, Toxic Power 3, Toxic: Ramp Up, Virulent Toxin 5, and Sharp Entry.  No Go Viral.  That is.  Devastating.
Drasna’s okay.  I don’t expect great things from her.  The lack of Go Viral is exceptionally damning.  Her DPS and sync would be fine, if not for the reliance on spreading Toxic beforehand.  She’ll need allies to support that for aggressive comps.  The good news is, on-type, she’s gauge free, which is nice.  She’s solid secondary Poison DPS.  But this isn’t...especially satisfying.
Lodge Calem Fire Strike.  Thank god, it’s not Tech.  Heat Wave, X Sp Atk, Psybeam, TM is +1 accuracy/+3 crit/Free Moves Next.  Superduper Efffective 5, Super Interference 4 so higher Burn and Confuse rate, and Healthy Superhit which is adorable.  Burn Synergy 5, Scorching Sync, Charging Confusion 4 to regain 2 gauge when hitting a confused opponent, Super Interference 1, Baffle Buff 3.
Fennekin is a fairly standard Lodge Striker, offering nothing of particular notability, but being reasonably serviceable.  Calem benefits from two things of serious note.  First, capped crit in one action means Roxanne strats.  Second, with AoE Heat Wave he can focus on burn, but the spread confusion means he needs help.  Bede.  Bede has spread Confuse, and significant debuffs that Calem hits.  Calem, legitimately, has some meta tools backing him.  I don’t expect much, it’s a Fire Striker in the Fire-type Video Game, but he’ll at least be serviceable.  The problem is really when you look in his own type.  Morty’s not helpful, and he doesn’t get along great with most other damage dealers in his type.
Ingo While I have come to respect Ingo, I don’t respect this grid.  Stalwart/Unbending at 2/5 is nice tech, but by and large his issues remain.  He’s heavily reliant on Sandstorm MPR, and there’s no extension, and it’s part of his setup and trainer move so you really cannot delay.  We couldn’t get an MP Burst?  Vigilance is always nice but it’s a 5/5 skill and his grid is fairly hard to shop for already.  The short of it is, I don’t feel Ingo gets enough to warrant pushing to 5/5 over it.
Burgh The good news is, his base grid had sync covered with Smarty-Pants and Solar Flare.  His DPS gets a nice boost, and double that boost if on-type.  The bad news is, self-setup got the wrong compression.  They couldn’t put Critical Eye on X Sp Atk like they did for Ethan?  It had to be the near-useless trainer move?  Harsh, DeNA.  Burgh’s better, but I have a tough time calling this a serious upgrade.
Hop Natural Remedy, Quick Cure, and First Aid 4 are great.  SEUN 50% of the time when he takes a hit is useless.  Like most fights, Hop does not want to sustain into foe’s first sync.  The boost is substantial, but now only on-type.  Which is rarely the case, because he’s a support.  He supports any type, he doesn’t want to be on-type.  This is a borderline useless node outside of Regirock.  Overall, I really don’t like this one.  I think it’s general utility that’s passingly fine, but SEUN is a huge dud.
Final Thoughts On the whole, Galar salt aside, not too bad.  Field and Sprint move types are rough on materials, but I think they’re at least interesting for future development.  Gloria and Leon feel...mean.  Like, they should be better than they are.  But Leon’s locked to Burn multipliers and Go Viral isn’t until 4/5, which is a massive pain, while Gloria attempts to replicate the show of SS May last year but doesn’t quite measure up.  “But the rebuff-” if it wasn’t for that, everything she did would be limited to on-type, which is asking for trouble in the Gauntlet and High Score metas.

It’s been a while, but I’m back with some Hatchetfield headcannons (mostly for Pokémon AU)
1) Barry sleep-walks
2) Ruth’s Sprigatito is named MJ (Mary Jane)
3) Max calls MJ Max Jr.
4) Cinderace Max is called Ace

I'm excited to announce my new art series: Pokémon Trainer Cards!
These are full art drawings of a character from Pokémon and their Pokémon of choice or a legendary (depends on the character). My plan is to do all the characters from Pokémon and sell the prints. If anyone is interested in purchasing these prints or wanting a commission done, please send me a message!
Of course, I would start with the man, the myth, the legend: Cyrus. I made two because...well it's Cyrus and I love him. I did enjoy making the Gyarados, but I think Dialga at the Spear Pillar distorting time is a lot more interesting. Chose Gyarados because of Cyrus' manga quote:
It is said that Gyarados' Rage will not settle until it has ravaged the landscape, the mountains and fields around it. I wonder how long...it's rage will endure this time?
I appreciate all the likes and reblogs! Stay tuned for more!

Bc I have no self control I made Hop's team on showdown. Outside of moves, I only really changed Pincurchin's ability to electric surge only bc I think Hop would. He would set up terrains + spikes. Strategy baby. The only pokemon that doesn't have an item is Cinderace.
....
I'm just realizing I should have given Clementine Return instead of body slam that would have been so much more impactful. Okay you see that Body Slam? Replace that with Return. Max Return at that.
Also! If anyone has any name ideas for Hop's pokemon please feel free to share!
