That moment...

in ‘Confection’ when you realise an outtake was actually an edit point!

One of my favourite Masterpiece PBS behind the scenes features for Season 6 is 'Endeavour, Season 6: The Cast on Shaun Evans as Director' [x], mostly because of all the outtakes where Shaun is flashing that fantastic smile!

At about the 1min 20sec mark, there's a wonderful outtake from 'Confection' when Shaun looks at Anton Lesser and breaks up. If you run the outtake directly after the actual scene, however...

...the frames match exactly!

How lovely to think that at the end of any given scene, no matter how dark, that they all could have laughed! In this scene DeBryn is telling Bright and Endeavour about the bullet that killed Fancy!

This knowledge might just get me through the toughest scenes. And also the Morsetache, of course.

Can we just talk about how Max Debryn is the most character ever? He's a pathologist. He's a hobbit. He's queer-coded. He communicates exclusively in gay poetry references and morbid scientific facts. He's got a perfect house. He can bake. He'll chew you up and spit you out if you cross him. He wears bowties. The way morse asks debryn where he stands on love and debryn deflects the question by deliberately and obtusely misinterpreting what morse is asking him (pretends morse is asking where he stands on suicide, rather than love) and then when morse clarifies, debryn responds with a Housman quote (“And one was fond of me: and all are slain”), the next line of which is “ask me no more, for fear I should reply”. Why would they do that except to say that debryn is gay and through necessity of the times is very subtle/quiet about it. Morse is literally the only person there who would understand what debryn is really saying, and would know to respect what debryn is saying and give him privacy and understanding.
