ohhh i have to admit choosing a few was hard (stares at my 100+ iwaoi ao3 bookmarks,,,) but i managed to narrow it down to 20 of my favorite complete fics. i hope this isn’t a Lot but i just couldn’t make it shorter for the life of me lol.

these are in no specific order!! i love them all VERY MUCH.

In April by hiuythn (28k, rated t): this is the fic that got me into iwaoi! i saw it one day on my tl, read it and immediately fell in love with their dynamic. it’s so good and has lots of mutual pining which !!!!

mint by tothemoon (18.8k, rated t): i’m literally in love with everything ao3 user tothemoon writes. their way with words it’s just... wow. this one features oikawa’s face on a billboard and the Confession scene changed me as a person

the courtship ritual of the hercules beetle by kittebasu (66.3k, rated t): i know we’ve talked about this one before but if there’s someone reading this who hasn’t checked it out i’m telling you to do it Now. it hurts SO GOOD and it’s overall perfect

five minutes west of irvine by birdcat (20.3k, rated g): the way the author writes is simply beautiful. i really really really love this fic. it has iwaoi getting together after spending some time apart and it’s incredible.

Fernweh by oikawashoyo (19.6k, rated g): THIS. it’s so introspective and i LOVE IT. i love the character study and I LOVE argentina oikawa SO MUCH. seeing him thrive, and achieve his dreams and find a new home in argentina just :’))) argentoto supremacy!!!

I like the idea of the florist!au so here we go - Makki works at the flower shop and he just really love flowers - He study them and his dream is to be a botanist - Mattsun is a music-addicted - He can tell you whatever you want to know about music - I'm not kidding. He knows everything from Mozart to Asking Alexandria - He also likes cigarettes - One day he passing in the front of the flower shop and Makki just pumped from nowhere and gave him a branch of lily-of-the-valley - Makki just gave him a small grin and went back to the store - Mattsun keeped the little branch with him until the frangrance fade - In the next day, he went to the flower shop and gave Makki his favorite vinyl disc, with a little note inside - "Hope you like it, little lily" - Makki passed out. - He listened to the vinyl every day for a whole week. - At friday, he gave Mattsun a paper with a place and hour. - It was a date. - They get along so fast and well, and in 4 weeks they were dating. - Makki started smoking with Mattsun, but only mentols and only when he is stressed - Mattsun studied a little about flowers just for Makki, because "his smile talking about flowers bright up my entire soul" - Imagine they living together - A house full of flowers and always with music playing around - So peaceful

i wanted to show my appreciation to the authors who have given so much to me since i joined the hq!! fandom...so here’s this essay i wrote? all of these are complete and there’s no major warnings!

sunday morning rain is falling by @hweiro (iwaoi, 1.5k, T)

iwaizumi and oikawa are married and enjoying a quiet sunday morning. this is the shortest fic here but i was crying, like, 2 paragraphs into it. i don’t want to spoil why this is the most heartwarming fic EVER because my reaction when i first read it was VERY tearful, so pls pls take my word for it and read this!

ask a stupid question by @darkmagicalgirlwrites (ennofuta, 2k, G)

the new miyagi captains are invited to a tv interview and futakuchi makes it his goal to get ennoshita to laugh on camera. you end up laughing instead. i read every joke in this 3 times to fully appreciate them and the ending has the greatest Suffering Captains™ scene ever (check the comments for some exposition on what the teams were doing while the captains were away ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) it’s not inappropriate i just thought it was a good time to pull out a lenny face).

it’s like the hunger games, but better (seijou gen, 3k, G)

seijou celebrates the end of the school year by facing all the other sports teams in a paintball battle. just...read this fic please. it’s so funny. it’s from kindaichi’s point of view, which was a brilliant decision, and it has the best kunimi i’ve ever read. i literally can’t say anything more because there’s like 5 jokes in every line and i don’t want to spoil it, so pls.....read this. laugh with me

a girl of routine by @delineative (hanayui, 4k, G)

misaki hana works through her feelings about her performance as johzenji’s manager, with some help from michimiya yui. i loved how the importance of managers to their teams was central to the plot. this fic feels relatable and real, and i think it has something to do with how the author writes misaki’s thoughts knowing that every decision she makes is an insight into her character. this fic is so good, i love hana so much, pls read

good evening shuttle bus (tell me where you’re gonna take us) by @owlinaminor (reonkai, 4k, T)

oohira reon and kai nobuyuki strike up a friendship at their first nationals, and it grows into something more over the next three years. this fic is really...quiet. the mood is so soft and calming and it fits oohira and kai so well. i want fanart of the snaps reon sends kai because l m a o, i love tendou. and i love reon. and i love reonkai. there are 4 fics in this ship’s tag. j o i n u s in this suffering

a bouquet of flours by @guyfierimpreg (i am LOVING the url, matsuhana, 5k, G)

matsukawa and hanamaki raise a sack of flour together. i don’t think i have to say more but i LOVE THIS so i will. the dialogue is sharp and the jokes are so funny without falling into the Matsuhana Meme Trap (removing the characterization from their jokes until it’s just a reference to the latest meme. i think they would have meme preferences, memeferences if you will). the author’s voice is really strong and relatable. think of the greatest series finale of a tv show you’ve ever seen, and the ending to this fic is better than that.

tales from the iron wall: summertime special (dateko gen, 5k, T)

just 5.7k words celebrating aone. we are all dateko #relatable. the plot isn’t fully revealed until a little bit into the fic so i don’t want to spoil it, but let me just say aone laughs in this. that’s all u need to know tbh. god bless nametsu, i hope she’s doing alright

florist! iwaoi! au!!! in which oikawa keeps stopping by iwaizumi and ushijima’s flower store. iwaizumi loves plants and oikawa and i’m LIVING. there’s some florist au trope subversion (i never thought i would type those words in that order) and a scene involving a dog that was hilarious. ushijima is iwa’s best friend but he still has banter with oikawa, and it’s a nice break from characterizations where he’s emotionless. this one is so soft and good, pls read

akaashi pulls a muscle in his shoulder so bokuto invites him to his house to do yoga. i laughed so hard reading this, akaashi’s inner monologue is all of us when thinking about bokuto (and not to spoil some of the best parts but akaashi’s inner monologue is sometimes in kuroo’s voice and he has so many regrets, it’s hilarious). there’s a perfect mix of angst (bokuto’s dad passed away, if that’s something you need to know!) and humor, and the tone is so akaashi. there’s a line akaashi says about kenma that i’m getting tattooed on my face, a line from kuroo about certain relationship struggles that i’m getting tattooed on my arm, and the rest of this fic is going on my back. all-around great bokuaka.

in this same space (stay for a minute) by @hweiro (iwaoi, 23k, T)

cosplayer/doujinka au iwaoi! i knew nothing about half of those words before reading this but the author makes everything really clear and easy to understand. the mutual pining is portrayed so creatively; in fact, the entire fic is well-written and impressively meta. like no joke, there’s at least 3 layers of complexity. 10/10 would recommend

in april by @hiuythn (iwaoi, 28k, T)

iwaizumi watches as oikawa dates other people and can’t figure out why it makes him feel weird. for six years. this fic is so funny that the notes made me laugh. the mutual pining is so good and iwaizumi and oikawa are so soft together. there’s also a hilarious interpretation of what it’s like when people have been assuming you’ve been dating the whole time. shoutout to iwaizumi’s suitemates.

florist makki + literature student mattsun headcanons for me to think abt at 3am

here is pt 1 for yall lol

florist makki:

more than half of the flowers sold are grown in the garden and greenhouse located at the back of the shop, and the ones not grown locally are ordered online or elsewhere

the flowers there are mostly tended to by makki but his mom will occasionally drop by and help when she can

a majority of the labor is done by makki himself, and this has made him fairly muscular

makki may not be as toned as iwa, but when he isn't wearing loose clothing, his muscles are definitely more noticeable

he has a fairly good sense of fashion and is a little more experimental (willing to wear bright colours and skirts on occasion because to him, fashion is just fashion, and therefore genderless/gender neutral)

enjoys going outside, working with his hands, and getting dirty, but has to wear a wide brim hat and put on sunscreen or he WILL burn

has freckles from all the time he spends outside, and they fade during the winter

actually bonded with oikawa over how amazing iwa is (maybe they have a separate chat just for sharing pictures of iwa and then later on added mattsun but you didn't hear that from me)

people tend to mistake makki as sort of the lazy laid back type, but if he finds something he's really passionate about, he will put in 110% and will not rest until it is done perfectly

despite his love for the outdoors and flowers, he has developed a...rather weird relationship with bugs in general

he harbors no strong feelings either way towards insects (except for mosquitoes, which he thinks deserve to burn in the depths of hell) and will kill them if absolutely necessary, but not hesitate to scream and cry if one flies towards him

joined the volleyball club with iwa and oikawa in highschool but didn't pursue it after graduating mostly out of laziness

took a year off after graduating high school to figure out what he the wanted to do and also helped his mom with the flower shop

decided to go to uni and study to become a botanist (and also maybe took some courses in business to help with the shop)

always gets roped back into playing every now and again in uni with them, and constantly says that he'll never play again because of how sore he gets

doesn't do much with his hair because he's almost always wearing a hat (literally just smooths out his hair in the morning if it sticks up and calls it a day)

literature student mattsun:

went to live with his cousin, sakusa, near the end of junior high because his mothers health had declined and his father could only take care of her and his little brother

decided to join the itachiyama volleyball club in highschool because sakusa wanted to play with him

absolutely l o a t h e d the itachiyama uniform for looking like piss and refuses to acknowledge he even wore it

was told that the uniform didn't suit him and that only made his hatred towards it grow

moved back to miyagi after high school to live with family, but still keeps in touch with sakusa

met oikawa in uni because of a shared class they had, and bonded over their high school days of playing volleyball

after high school, mattsun decided to fill his wardrobe with as much black/dark clothing as he possibly could because he knows it makes him look hot

has a habit of covering his mouth when he laughs because someone said that his smile and dimples looked weird

is fairly muscular and enjoys working out and keeping in shape when he's not a stressed uni student

his hair may look like a mess, but it's a controlled mess (he brushes his hair and styles it to his liking every morning)

spends the most getting ready even if his closet is 90% black because the blacks have to match (or so he says)

has a total of 9 piercings (1 on the left eyebrow, 3 on the left ear, and 5 on right ear)

shaved a lil slit on his right eyebrow because he wanted to see what he would look like, and ended up liking it too much to cover it

pursues photography on the side as a hobby, and enjoys taking pictures of nature the most

has a photography instagram where he posts his photos as well as candid shots he took of his friends

adopted a black cat that he named hana because she kept biting his flowers

general:

despite their friends knowing each other, and constantly talking about the other, they just never met

only met when oikawa begged mattsun to get him flowers from a specific flower shop as he claimed the other flower shops weren't as good

their first encounter wasn't very eventful (mattsun walked in, got the flowers, and the left)

oikawa made a bet with iwa that they'd hit it off right away because he knows they're a perfect match for each other but failed to realize that he sent mattsun during the shops rush hour

officially met when surprisingly iwa set them on a date (and yes, they got along just as oikawa had predicted)

on their blind date, they found out about their mutual love for books, and makki kept going on and on about this one particular book he had read from his favourite author, Issei

mattsun was so flustered that he couldn't bring himself to tell makki that HE was the author

makki only found out after going on one of his hour long tangent about his favourite author while hanging out with iwa, oikawa, and mattsun (to which iwa had asked if that was mattsun and mattsun just nods in response)

mattsun teases makki about it later on when he's not as flustered by saying "wow makki I can't believe you couldn't tell it was me. I thought we had something special"

mattsun will spend his spare time with makki in the shop, helping him out when he can

takes quite a bit of candid shots of makki

in turn, makki will spend his spare time at mattsuns house, helping his parents, and taking care of his little brother and hana

hana has grown an attachment to makki and mattsun joked around saying that makki now has to spend the rest of his time together or hana will get sad

and makki replies "are you sure you're talking about your cat and not you?"

it caught mattsun off guard, and ended up blushing, but just laughed it off (so what if makki was right he didn't need to know"

makki made a flower crown for mattsun once and mattsun kept it in his room for so long that it wilted, so makki made him another flower crown out of fake flowers

mattsun literally has heart eyes every time he looks at makki but he thinks it's unrequited, so he keeps it to himself

makki also has a crush on mattsun but he just...doesn't realize it (give him some time he'll get there)

they're just so stupidly in love with each other that iwa and oikawa both have told them to confess, several times
